"Be sure to catch the live edition of the Dan Patrick show weekdays at 9 a.m. eastern 6 a.m. Pacific. On Fox Sports radio and the iHeartRadio app. Seth Davis, CBS sports college basketball analyst, he joins us every year at this time, senior writer for the athletic. Good to see you again, Seth. Give me the result last night that surprised you the most. Well, good morning to you. I can't say I was surprised by any of them to be honest. I did go for no in my picks last night for the athletics, so I should just disappear right now. Because that will never happen again. Atlantic, I'm a big believer Dan that winning is a habit. And they've now won 34 games to three losses. And people, I would hope that we've come far enough to understand that it's not because they're in a bad lead. Conference, you would say, is actually not a bad league. As mid major leagues go, it's about as good as there is. And they dominated all season long. You know, as a story, Kansas state is hard to beat. They only had two players coming back. From a program that had a job opening for a reason. And Jerome tank came in and brought in a whole bunch of new guys. They were picked to finish last in the big 12 at the start of the season for good reason. And they have been great all year. It's not like, oh my God, they got hot late and are on this amazing tournament run. They have been good all season long. And you saw last night, you know, the power of having the two best players in the game. Now, of course, game went to overtime. They could have easily lost obviously, but it's been an amazing story for them. So, and then, you know, you come to me, I think you kind of Alabama have been the best two teams in the tournament. And after last night, I would probably put Yukon one Alabama too. Let's see how the tide looks tonight. So yeah, it's just a great, great night of basketball and the crazy shot by Julian's drawer of Gonzaga to end the night. Really, really unfortunate for UCLA after the amazing season they've had for them to be down two starters at this point in the season. They were, they were gassed the whole way. The fact that they took in zagat to the edge like that is an incredible tribute to Nick and those kids. So it's been a fun tournament. It's almost like we've redefined what a Cinderella is. Now, I talked to Princeton's head coach. And he said, we're embracing Cinderella, where Florida Atlantic is not. They're like, no, we belong here. Kansas state as a three seed has a Cinderella field to them, which is pretty amazing. I don't know if any of these other schools would be defined as Cinderella's in previous years, and maybe not now. Yeah, I don't think so. I would agree with you. I mean, you know, we can talk about San Diego state, you know, being a mountain west school. I mean, there are 5 seeds. So if that's, you know, we're kind of scraping the bottom of the barrel for Cinderella there. You know, I mean, I've said many times, Dan. San Diego state is the best mid major program in the country outside against Aga. They are really, really good every year. And let's not forget, in 2020, when the tournament canceled, they were headed for a one or a two CM. So they've been good now for many, many years being able to replenish their roster, you know, going back to the Kawhi Leonard teams of Steve Fisher. Transferring that from Steve Fisher to Brian dutcher and continuing that success that doesn't that doesn't usually happen. If you're in the sweet 16, I mean, I understand Princeton is a 15th seed and we call them a Cinderella but I mean, if you didn't know anything about the teams and you watched that, Princeton, Missouri game, you didn't know anything about them where their rank where they were received and what they were in. You said, oh yeah, prison is a better team. I mean, they just dominated them physically. So yeah, I think we're long past the point of thinking along those lines, but it's an incredible story, you know, Ivy League champ is the number 15 seed and whatever you did to be Purdue is a 16 beating a one. That's going to happen again. We now know it's only a matter of time and probably not a very long time before 16 seed reaches the sweet 16. It's been the trajectory of the sport. Really since I've been covering it now, which I hate to say is a good 30 years and increasing fast. Seth Davis, CBS sports, college basketball illness, and senior writer for the athletic joining us on the program. It feels like those teams, those schools that have players who stay longer than one year. They're the most dangerous. And Kentucky proved that for many, many years, they would have one and done and tons of talent and they'd go on to make millions and millions of dollars in the NBA, but they didn't have great success deep into the tournament. Are we changing the blueprint for success in college basketball? Yeah, again, I think that's another thing that's been happening. I mean, if you look at 2012, the Kentucky champ that was Anthony Davis, Michael Kidd gilchrist. 2015 was duke with jaleel Okafor, tyus Jones, justice Winslow. Those are all freshmen. So those are two freshman leaning teams. Now, they did have older players that were there as, you know, they're kind of glue guys and the like. But they were heavily reliant on one and done type talents. That's really been it. After that, it's really teams like Jay Wright's Villanova's teams and the older North Carolina team and right on down the line, Kansas last year. You got to be older. And now Dan, we're at a, we're in a point where college basketball has never been this old because of the extra COVID year that these players are getting. So, and then their ability to transfer without having to sit out has, I think, help, you know, sort of water find its level where players are going to places where they can play and they can be exposed and they can have the best experience. I mean, people talk about the downsides to that, but I think the upsides really outweigh the downsides of giving everybody the ability to find the place that fits them best. So yeah, I mean, like the duke Tennessee game last week was a great example. I mean, duke just looked really young, Tennessee was older, more physical. And that's why they're still playing. I think a lot of these teams tonight, Texas, one of the oldest teams in the country. And not just being old, damn, but having continuity from year to year. You can get old in a transfer portal by bringing in a bunch of old players. But if you have old players who have played together for a couple of years, that's really the sweet spot that I think teams are looking for. Drew Timmy has 7 career tournament games with at least 25 points. So tied with Bill Bradley in Oscar Robertson for third most all time elven Hayes and Jerry West tied for first with 8. So he can reach that with the next game. How will college basketball remember drew Timmy? So that's a pretty good company, right? Yeah. That's not too bad. I think he's got another year of

Sorry i don't think they are but remember. There was a time where they were having like. West coast teams east coast teams. I can't follow it where it used to be. Hey you gotta be sort of in the same region. Even the same time zone wasn't connecticut with like the af for something. I think they're in the american athletic conference right now. I'm trying to find out who else. Philip rivers won his first game as a high school head coach. He wanna know and he's coaching. Saint michel catholic cardinals. He won one hundred thirty four regular season games as a quarterback and he had his first win. That was last night yes. Tot outcome was touch and go. You had to make some tough coaching decisions. Late i heard forty-nine nothing income on top of state by the way mountain west call mountain west curious. Okay oh no. I thought we were talking about connecticut. Conference yeah polling. The american conference they still in their connecticut. I have no idea they bounce out. I have no idea. That's why you know. We have one aa. But i it just feels like you have division to division three gets a lot of publicity when it comes to the playoffs but just feels like we're going to get to that. There's forty schools thirty to thirty four schools. And then there's going be a another grouping of college football teams and then you'll have one aa. It just seems like that's inevitable here. All right Oh connecticut independent. Independent is that because nobody wants them. I don't know they left. The glamour of the aussie the ac. The ac by the way had This makes a lot of census lineup cincinnati. Ucf tulsa to lane temple smu. South florida navy out of nowhere memphis in houston. They're all over the place. Yeah mclovin academic yukon can't be elite football like that a couple years and rutgers courtesy like why can't these big north schools with all their money. I think in the northeast. "But don't take away the next season for these great young athletes. Let me let me let me jump in there. They they didn't take away next season. They're going to have a team and they're going to play but they can't host home playoff games next year. Right right okay and You stated that but the thing is though is that it's a life lesson like you said you know. Sports is about sportsmanship. It's about values it's about working together. So what is your. What is your come back on that. Well i don't think they did any of those things. I think that they they didn't work together. They worked part. They threw tortillas at a team of predominantly hispanic players. How does that support any of the ideals that you just mentioned. Okay yeah so yeah. So we're we're agreeing on that. So yeah okay. Thank you for your for your combat. Thanks thanks phoebe ramona. I just think that they're high school. Kids you can't you let them do this. And what message does that send to the next group high school kids want to try some crap like this might less offensive ways that they could have celebrated the joyous right right like i just saw like. Here's what here's what's so like. I wanna make a difference a distinction between having a really stupid blind spots right and trying to do something that was actually very offensive. I'm wondering if it's that. Santa barbara gouge. It was just this guy who like this is how he celebrated and uc santa barbara or whatever coronado alum law. Didn't see how this would look and then everybody else just joined in with this and and now they're paying the price for it or was this like they're really stupid and they were actually trying to insult people. So it makes sense was it intentional versus unintentional. Sometimes matters yeah. I think yeah i think the i think the end result is so unacceptable that you have to be. You have to be aggressive with the punishment. Here's andrew in orange county. Hey andrew you're on seven ten. Espn high intra having these. So i just kind have a different take you know i. I think this is an opportunity for us to really explore like the deeper social economic Implications of what all this resulted to you know. I think we bought answer or ask the question. Like why are these schools ethnic we've so similar right and if we look into it it has to do with you. Know how housing in how zones in school zones are are set up. You know and so. I mean yes. It's i don't think it was the right move for them to celebrate it in that way but to certain extent. I think the big here like i. I worried that people think like oh we're gonna ban and stripped of the championship and we're just going to call her today. But no i think it has a lot deeper exploration of like why these schools are structured in these ways in the first place. Yeah but i still don't think one excludes the other. I think he'll have to make the thank you for the phone call ramona. I think you could you. Of course this is a teachable moment. And you could do it but can you do it without punishment. I'm not so sure he can. You have to and by the way there were. There were hispanic city council. People and state senators laying that you have to condemn this in the strongest possible form. There's a lot of pressure from latino groups to for them to do something like they did today. And if you're just turning in mason. I did the story about a month ago. That basketball championship. Dan san diego. County coronado a predominantly white school beats orange glen a predominantly hispanic school after the game and after they win coronado starts some some guy brought up baggage tortillas and they started throwing tortillas at the other team up in the air to celebrate their victory and today the through the book at coronado stripped of the title coaches fired on probation for the next two years. Here's frankie in los angeles a frankie on seven ten. Espn hi hello honor to finally talk to you guys. You guys are right on the head of the punishment actually. It should be a little more severe. I'm very happy that you guys nationally. Because i played basketball. That area An era in the eighties and there are a number of people that came from coronado in this rummy areas. My college religious college Let me see what happens. Stop with high school during a college. Game number fast edgy. A black basketball player home. Get by news and over the row. Whoa no-one no-one stuff. And there was franky. There was no punishment afterwards. Not as a matter of fact i called the the players now. The head coach one big city college. I told him i said look. That's probably thirty five years and he said he told his kids what happened. They unbelievable until i call all the president of the was kind enough to write an apology letter to to the the head coach on. Probably you can talk to them tomorrow. We talked about recently and I remember people saying oh. That's no big deal. That's what we do. It's not yeah. It was the historical significance of this. So you're right nationally your rice to make sure you hold onto the fire in two years. I'll guarantee you because i area is one of the richest areas in southern california. Yeah for now. Doctors all live over there. So let's just how europe these may notice and right and i think as Thank you thank you for the phone call. I think ramona what this does is it sets an example. Not just in san diego but what we're talking about in la. I guarantee at people talking about this new york. I mean it because this went viral..
