"Outside of that. There's a little bit of window for flexibility but it's generally eggs hash browns chilli cheese. And then if you have some kind of meet the ones that ursula were actually modeled after a hybrid of the ones that my mom would make us all the time. And my favorite place in albuquerque called golden pride. It's it's really weird. Drive through fried chicken slash brio joint. But they have the best breakfast burritos in the best tortillas and you said new mexican chilli's specifically and i'm assuming some other ingredients have some sort of necessary source saying how do you source your ingredients at yet so the chilies come from two different places. And a lot of people. Associate new mexican chilli's with hatch. Chilies and hatch is a mexican chilly. But that's like the the most popular one. It's kind of like the valley of california. Virtually my favorite chilies. Come from just outside of albuquerque in a place called lemme start. But i can't get those all the time so we get our chilly from zia hatched green chili company and then use blue corn. And juniper ask for some other pastries. I get them from. Navajo owned agricultural companies in northern mexico. And my mom because it's kind of hard to ship five hundred pounds of beans out to brooklyn every month which this doesn't make it any easier but it makes more cost effective. My mom actually drives up to farmington to go straight to the farm she picks up a truckload of beans stores them in a garage and ships me like a hundred pounds of beans every two weeks. Wow this is really a family affair. Yeah it it really is an. She's ships my red chili powder to shout out to eric's mom yes. She does all the hardwork. Sabrina in the october issue. We also feature one of the dishes on your menu. it's called leah's cabbage and it consists of roasted cabbage. And do we sausage and hot honey. I know that greg is the chef here. But if you don't mind walk us through the dish so you gave a great description. Thank you on top of that. It's roasted cabbage With a we make pork next. We're in the south so people that are like pork belichick. You know it's pork dish and it's delicious. You just get out the flavor of the pork by making that start adding some cram to it and then and do we sausage the hot honey so it's very popular dish. People come there just to get that dish. Actually that is liz cab. What's not li as cavalier used to make cabbage. That was amazing. That had sausage in it was sweet. It had a little honey in it. She used to make it all the time before she passed. And so greg was like. I'm going to try to make her a cabbage. So he makes it. Greg's mom comes down the first day we open and she tasted and she said baby that was so good. It's not your sisters but it's good. Yeah the interpretation. You were talking about earlier where he's really taking the taking the nostalgia and making it his own. Yeah cabbages huge for us. Down in the south black folks. We make cabbages like every week. Sometimes you'll grab my may throw a pot of cabbage on on a wednesday so it's the massage at definitely identified with that when he said. The burritos are nostalgic for him cabbages. us yeah and some people think of cabbage is like diet food or whatever but that's not how it is down there. I know that for sure at the pork nick. I'll be. I'll be by next. Yeah exactly. I've all about that hot was telling them i was coming to brooklyn for another and i told them i'm gonna go to my husband and i will be there. Yes please say hello. I'm there every day. I wanna burrito now spicy food. I don't eat spicy food. My husband does. But i'm gonna eat it because like to eat food. How it comes with to get all the flavor so i generally do not condone this behavior. But you can get it without the chili now. I don't buy chef suggestion. You know special requests. Get it as it comes okay. All right that that order doesn't come with the site. I but if you get it the way it comes it's ursula. Herself actually came to visit ursula a few weeks ago. And oh my god saw this. Were you nervous. I yes no I was nervous to have that many people in my apartment. That's really what it was about. She was living it up. She got dressed up to go over there for lunch in all way and a bunch turquoise and she wanted to go meet all the customers and go tell them who she was. Oh my god. I love it. I love that. Yeah she loved it and my niece came and worked in the kitchen for like fifteen minutes and boss everybody around. So what did you think she. I was a little nervous because my grandma Is very much like what you were saying. It's not your sisters. But i was like what does she have to say and she was like. This is just like home. You did such a good job. That's so sweet. Now she only good review. You need yeah is. She was able to get her flowers while she's here. That's so important. yes dope. Did they become so before. We get back into our interview. With sabrina and eric. We're going to check in with someone else who we highlighted in our restaurant issue. And that's jeff. Mike carter of down north pizza in philadelphia so down. North business model is really interesting. They employ formerly incarcerated. People giving them culinary opportunities at a fair wage and the goal is really to embrace the barriers to employment that many people face after they've been incarcerated another notable thing about dan north and about chef carter is that he puts pineapple on his pizza which is very controversial but he has some strong opinions. About how exactly to do it if you're going to do it. And why he thinks. It works chef mike. Welcome to the show. Thank you very me okay. So let's get right into it. I'm sure a lot of people are already rolling their eyes and fast forwarding because they just cannot with the idea of pineapple on pizza. I'm more open minded. Please convince the skeptics that this is something that they should really reconsider. Oh man what can i say. A love. pineapple. The sweetness law tartness understand like that was with really makes people approach with a little bit of reserves so we caramelized pineapple down near candy. We throw it on a pizza. Here at downer. How do you do that when a pain with a effect which uses butter in sugar and just let iraq until his own will. Candy is the karmapa. sugars start to break down a little bit and it kind of pushes back. Tartness that you get when you bite into a raw pint. That's a total game changer. Okay so pre cooking the pineapple so that it gets kind of candied and then you put that on the pizza before it goes in the oven or at the end we put it on before it goes into the oven. So start my base with four cheese blend and it's a barbecue beef bacon pieces so The saltiness of in a in effect from beef bacon kind of mary's with the the sweetness of the pineapples and his beautiful to to wait like the fat comes off bacon. Kinda like glazes over the pizza. We finish it off with a barbecue sauce. House may barbecue sauce drizzle and some pickle jalapenos. I like the call. The trinity get the saltiness. And then you get. The spiciness filipinos in the sweetness from the pineapples. It works 'cause you're balancing out with those other flavors in the fat and the tang. Tell me you said beef. Bacon why facon taken will first and foremost of philadelphia too big muslim population philadelphia. I would say probably half work customer basis for slow in almost myself so like philadelphia beef. Bacon is the thing if you like beef jerky. I'm suddenly usa game changer..

I'm not going to do it because that's a lot of place of course knees for it's becoming very obvious that these are not principles because if they were principles you'd say use this idiom instead of that idiom and what you're saying is exactly yeah i get it. "Man i was. I was such a bad program and six months ago. I've had those experiences where you jump on a project and they expect you to adhere to their conventions conventions are completely not what you have been doing with just take casing for example you know Camel case with an underscore for you know things that are passed to api or maybe managers or whatever cal casing pascal casing for method parameters all of those things that you do completely expect you on day one. Just throw that away and you away young. The second part is you have the idioms from the world. And then we have the idioms hair And often the idioms here are unwritten. Holies undocumented you know i can look in the county that i can say that consistent across the painting something that no one in right mind would day. But you're all doing it so so we'll okay with that. There's a lovely phrase. That the even why i attributed to sign even he may know. Remember saying it would rather things consistently wrong than inconsistently anything because there's nothing you can do with inconsistency. Nothing lied anything. I learned to here is i cannot ashim over here right right. And they continue. Just channing and channing day what justice figure out what you did so that doesn't mean that things that decision is might want something Ticket never changes. it means. You need a very deliberate strategy around changing those things so that say that we're going to move from. Javascript frameworks right. 'cause that that's nothing changes. That has a half life of about twenty minutes and this is easy to get on. They using angula one but using angular one from before they did the thing with the thing that thing easier or whatever it might be in your on angular two hundred forty seven and therefore mini since last jealous. Zero immediately is june twenty second and they are on angular eleven. Really yes well. That's because eleven is anger. Actually it's not. That's not perpendicular is.

"I. You're absolutely right. There's a lot to serendipitous. I remember having this moment where it was. is in java. It was a. I was doing a bunch of As he is doing that. I was about to write something to do. All of the crappy boilerplate around connecting to a database on running a query right. Because you got to think otitis olson from you gotta get a connection from that you go get a statement prepared statement which you have to prepare and from that event get aquarium you get results at under the every single step of that can filed so single is route try try try try and then it's just it's just page of noise way plumbing code. That has nothing to do with the end result of what. The application actually delivers in terms of value for the customer. That's not what you wanna be doing back. All you want to see it again. I think this one's because then on out at least on alcaide by at least in our project anyone else could just ride safe and justice aquarius. I'm use my query builder. Impo and have any of that tiny. So i tell you in seoul rapper. Something something intelligent coats said. What do you mean this one from. I know let me see you from using navigate. The changing the. I'm looking at the code. I was about to rights. I'm looking at pages and pages of the code. I was about to write with better era handling that. I was going to back. I'm going to use that. I'm gonna just serendipitous. Programming is joyful so predictable is predictable in terms of what it does. It also.

"Guy who's and any particular. Kevin honey was on the coal and he's done a ton of really interesting thinking and speaking about solid over the years. And some of which i've seen which i haven't seen and so they say i thought okay i'm going to go with this and then again. It wasn't my deadline to come up with these things for this and then someone contacted me about speaking conference and i said yes. I'm gonna talk about keep it so now that means Don't have the money to flesh out wartime main right. Why chinese each as is five things now spent an hour on it now. Yeah exactly now again to expand on the ideas and before we tell us what the acronym is. I'm looking on your blog and at the last thing you say in this the back story you say i will outline them in the next article. But i don't see the next article have you because the lease things reality runs away with me. I am very much. Douglas adams school deadlines i loved. End lines noise. They make so. Does it exist anywhere on the internet. Besides in this show. I presented cupid as an overview a couple of competences now so jack was one and then kroft in hungary or virtual hundred recently was the was the second one roku go into a bit more detail so they all out that in the in the youtube is fair as it were about halfway through writing the article. Might my plan. Is this on this. Possibly exclusive said disneyworld plan is on. I'm writing the review article sauce on the backstory optical. Size i hated. I'll see you pay his. And then my plan is to do a deep dive so bay i see ultimately you all take on site will then. The plan is to turn that until it will. Sort of. Continue on with your definitions. So we'll keep it and keeping this is well before we get to keep it one moment of bit of foundation. Which is this is. I was looking at the principles. And i don't think principles all the way i would describe software interesting so i wanted something else and the very deliberately. I wanted to describe characteristics of software that make it a joy to work tom coming from a human perspective from a development perspective. I'm looking at code. I've been really lucky. In my thirty odd years i've worked in Genuinely joyful to work and you've got an and you know where things you know how to find south someone you're trying to fix a ballgame unfamiliar Obvious where it is obvious where it is obvious when he fixed. And it'll be of how to fix in a way that is sympathetic with the rest of the stuff that had because he's so consistent and so easy to read in soviet it's like it's like going into someone else's tidy rope you wanna leave at the kent back on a broken windows thing if you always leave the titans toddy. So i didn't want didn't want principles which rules for you. To follow suggestions to was properties characteristics properties on the other appropriate It's like you can be more of this thing or lessons this thing. It's not exclusive you roam you know the issue did some work. You could make a choice in a trade off. We could walk. I could do vegetables. I'm making it more of this thing of oregon so the five things on a five things all it will come as no surprise very interrelated things gemini l. cpi succeed compatible Things i will code the can use without the cud okay. It's really simple request but lots and lots of layers to compose. api's tend to have less going on the narrow in their opinionated consistent of that stuff that makes much more likely to something like that Something this big in sperling in doublets different prices especially somebody else's code has an intent. Does a particular thing is like. I need to do this thing. Therefore i want. Somebody's already done the work to do it. I'll use that. But i now i'm looking for it to be opinionated. Be focused to do things for me. Yeah and then of course complaining so but it also talks about the how i get coaching so to use your narrow opinionated into fights but it has tons and tons of dependencies loss transitive dependencies imposing half of a dot net May even a thousands of jal files. I thought well an executive. He's actually rule. I just let me just reiterate. We'll happens up and it's not nothing's recorded try. It's the right code. Didn't contact may anyways. Said i didn't agree with a bunch of stuff. Unlikely didn't understand the budget solid. So that's the best. But if you're going to have solid and that leads to the broader question all that all they're a bunch of universal principles software All this and things ages. I if you make your software x. than than it's going to be better software right right so i kind of noodle on this and it's be i one. I saw the background prices. People using those principles as a bludgeoned to attack. "Of mobile. Say luckily i had a cue which is happening so for each of these. I basically said this is why. I think it just doesn't make sense annoyed bad or it's rolling it just it doesn't make sense now. It may have been a good idea twenty years ago back in the kind of the golden age of. Oh if you like which is kind of the nineties. But then you know even something like the one i had the most trouble with those lists cough substitutes ability because bobby discovers a genius and and it's pretty obvious right if you're gonna have some rain. You gotta substitute itchy. Kinda do similar thing except that mostly nowadays even even in other languages wanna see mostly as competition rather than harrison's underwriting very much a change in a aesthetic she like of so programming style that people generally you might places might together comparison. And so having as if you're gonna only have five things having as one of them how to do inheritance redundant. That's how how to do something. That is no longer useful. Well let me jump in. If i may because the substitution principle says that. If you're in just correct me. If i'm wrong if you're going to substitute let's say an object with another object. You should pretty much do the same thing right. so what. if you're using the repository pattern. Does that work. I mean the whole idea behind repositories. You have an interface at different implementations based on maybe you're talking to different back ends right maybe you're talking to so what they actually do is completely different but within the context of the app. They're doing the same thing. Maybe data persistency would say is that. Well this is. What you've hit on is a popular misunderstanding of at us. paik about sometimes she'll type systems sometime. "Better know a framework awesome. All right well if you don't know better no framework. Is this little thing. then i started doing. I don't even remember how long ago but At the beginning of the show i wanted to highlight a little section of dot net framework way before dot net core. Maybe a namespace. Maybe a class. Some little part of the framework and i got through that fairly quickly and then just started going out and finding things on the internet so basically. It's you know. Somebody said carl google's something fifteen minutes before going on the air and that's not true. He's started five minutes before it's not that bad but but anyway this is something that i did and weirdly. Richard was a part of it. So this is episode. Seventeen forty five so one seven four five dot p wwlp dot. Me popped up me and so this is an episode of the dot net show which is sort of a new thing that i'm doing focused on right now. Focus on salmon informs in maui. But you know going forward focused on all things dot net. It's not going to be every week. I i it with blazer train for weekly you get something every week. But it's one or the other in this episode five. And it's dot net maui blazer. Jonathan dick did a demo of building dot net maui app in dot net six preview four but using a combination of zamel and blazer. The thing is that people looks a lot like me. That's always we are. Okay yes so. The the thing about this show is. I've started by animating portraits from history. People i admire so you got george washington. You've got abraham lincoln you've got This last the one before you. Richard was Samuel clemens mark twain. And i just asked richard i said hey can animate you for an episode of the of dot net show. He says yeah sure. What the heck animated before and so you know. Start out by saying. Hi carl franklin but it's actually richard. That's doing the talking. So i'm just glad you're not doing the south park canadian. Floppy head thing like that was in i. I've seen that happen to. I couldn't do that. I think what i'm going to do is just find a picture of me. An animate me or just take it all off altogether there was just you know my friends are like what's with the president's i don't understand i don't get it like some kind of artistes like a making a statement you know it's like i just want people to go. What the hell is that. What you know grover cleveland. And they're gonna go. What the hell is george watson. It's got obvious really. Yeah and i quickly realized that. I'm going to run out of politically acceptable figures from history before somebody gets right so you say just taking american leaders not kind of fixing their faces. Yes so firstly. Setting a precedent winston churchill was on there as well right so setting a president i get. What i'm using is a tool called crazy talk. And it's this hundred dollar program that you basically start with the face it can be a painting. It can be a portrait. It's better if it's emotionless better. If they're not wearing glasses and you basically put the points on the face and draw the lines and all that and then you load up an audio file and it animates the face to to do. The speaking does weird things like occasionally blinks sort of moves. The face around a little bit like people do when they're not talking. It's a little creepy. But i thought you know. It's a gimmick might get people to watch the show or at least talk about it. I think it's quite a bit creepy as amusing. And it's kind of like the most obvious deepfake. Hey this is. it's amazing. How often people miss that right. It's actually if i'm making any kind of point at all it's like okay. This is not a deepfake folks. It's shallow shallow but it is is a shallow but that's a good description paddling fake anyway. But there's a but maui demo and the thing that people just don't understand like the question was the biggest question was like okay. So i know that when i'm doing sammer informs i have to. I notify property. Change to make binding work. How do i do that in blazer and the answer is you. Don't you use the place in programming model. Which has all the eventing and all the ways that events are handled in blazer. And you don't have to do that. You get State has changed. Just like you do in any blazer app but you can. Here's the thing folks. You can build these cross platform maui apps using everything blazer including the binding and eventing. Hello right so you know. Zamil is not your thing and you don't wanna learn yet. Another flavor of zama informs them or whatever it is. You've been doing blazer now. You can use that to build cross platform apps. Well come november. So it's very exciting. Yes good times whether that okay. Well that's what i got today. Richard is somebody talking to us. Always but i grabbed a particular comment. Relatively recent. this is from one of the shows with mark. Simmons is eighty five one. We did with mark talking about. There is a silver bullet in reference to Fred books essay from the race called no silver bullet and i we. We're gonna have mark back on the show soon anyway. But i wanted to grab this comet..

We've been to devon section in back we have it was. It was kinda weird wasn't it. It was a strange. I told you knew but i got really emotional onstage. I was surprised how much it affected me. Yeah i've never seen you thanked the audience for coming four times in a row and almost crowd. Yeah well we made a show. I think we were one of the first to do it in person. show In post in this this almost post pandemic time he saw so ready for it to. Yeah i'm with the speakers. Were super excited. The ten were really interesting. You know it was a real interesting mix of people. Everyone was very kind to each other. We kept. We wore masks in the hallways. We had the rooms faced out properly. Look lots of little details to make everything work. But i'm still in quarantine. I came back into canada. And i'm acquired a quarantine for fourteen days and i don't know how. Us laws work. But if i went to canada for a conference would i have to quarantine. You probably know more about this than do. I'd probably have yeah. I don't know that you could get in at all. They're pretty restrictive radio and be. Yes you would you'd have to quarantine for fourteen years and you know. Yeah an independent. The big debate right now is vaccinations right. Does that fully vaccinated. People should be able to cross the problem. Is that different countries recognize different vaccines and so an example of this is the fda has not given emergency approval to the astra zeneca vaccine yet. They're not using it. In the united states our view the are in the uk and canada. But we're franks into use it very american thing but at any more. Interestingly here in canada we are mixing vaccines. So i've got one dose of astra janika and one dose of pfizer. That's interesting right. And that's considered vaccinated in canada but think it'd be considered vaccinating a lot of other countries so this is the complexity were now going to face with. I have some vaccine of astra zeneca. I'm one of jin. Well if jin counts vaccinated a lot lately and well. That was the voice of dan. North our guest and we're going to talk to him in a few minutes but first let's get started with a little thing. We call better know a framework awesome..

Delaying COVID-19 relief could do lasting damage

"We are not going to hazard a guess here about what is going to happen with negotiations on an economic relief bill the negotiations that the president shutdown yesterday afternoon, and then tried to restart piecemeal. Last night what we are going to do is deal the facts as we have them now, which is that there are no negotiations and as far as anybody knows, there is no help coming for this economy till after the election and maybe longer. So that being case two stories today on that topic, and then a political insight marketplace's Mitchell Hartman gets going with story number one the. Big Picture. Back, in March Washington sent three trillion dollars coursing through the economy's veins. One of the biggest infusions was six hundred dollars a week in extra unemployment payments to more than twenty million jobless Americans that expired midsummer and George Washington University economist J Shamba says the amount of cash going out to laid off workers cratered it fell from one hundred, ten, July two, thirty, four, million dollars in September. So there's this massive drop off to the economy and also to the most vulnerable households those twelve hundred dollar relief checks from the spring have been spent with most of the federal pandemic relief now gone. Slowing retail sales and personal spending Joseph Bruce. RSM Consulting says. A quarter of small businesses have closed. He predicts without more federal support including lending to small businesses more will fail and state and local governments won't be able to keep teachers and other essential workers on the payroll says Michael. `grats. At Columbia Law School. The loss of civil service jobs will disproportionately affect minority because they've been hired into those jobs. Bottom Line says Dan North at credit insurer, Euler Hermes, North America. Okay. Let's say we don't have a stimulus package. The economy gets pretty severely damaged in the short term probably for five years to get back on. The burden falling to families that are running out of time and money says Columbia's Michael `grats people are facing eviction. Difficulty paying for food and lodging. This is a desperate situation. One that the chaos in Washington isn't making any
