"Welcome back to clockwise detect podcast that's older than it's ever been. And now, it's even older. I'm your co host Dan Moore, and I am joined across the internet, but my delightful pal and co host Mr. mica sergeant how're you doing Mike? I'm doing well. I am also older. And so are you? Yeah. No. I know and I'm about to be older still. Today, we have of course to wonderful as we always do and this week. They are to my left a tech editor and reporter from CNN. It's my former colleague from world Heather Kelly. Welcome back other. Hello and to my left. It's emoji. Historian and chief emoji officer at emoji pedia. Let me say emoji one more time for Jeremy Burge. Hello, Jeremy, Mike. Hello, Dan and Hiller had the full out annual clockwise catch out. He's coming over here to catch up. It's the only place we have that's true as we do it in just thirty minutes because we're really efficient. So I'm going to kick things off with a rumor that just started circulating a day or so ago that the ipads update this year, the new version of IOS will support cursor 's mouses mouses mice. Track pads pointing devices et cetera. And so my question for you is that something that you want on your ipad. Or do you think it's not really necessary? Where do you come down on that kind of thing? Heather when we start with you. Oh, goodness. I mean early on where like this could replace a computer, but Ono there's no mouth. I kind of think we've all moved on though. And we just accept I've had for what they are which are like little entertainment boxes for your children in restaurants. And he doesn't need a mouse. But I mean, I'd give it a try, and then I would probably never use it again. My fingers are my Meese. So I don't really need a mouse or pointer because I've got fingers do that. I understand the idea there is some level of of. Oh, I don't know very close manipulation one can do when they have a curse, sir. But if you're talking about ipad pros or frankly, most of the ipad models now can accept input from the apple pencil Beit version one of virgin too. And so I don't I don't think that we need me on the ipad because we have either our finger which does well enough and for closer manipulation of the screen. You've got the apple pencil, logic, crayon, etc. Etc. Jeremy your thoughts, I mostly agree with you all I feel like if I was the the kind of person that uses the ipad with the external cable. I would like the track pad. But I I'm not that person. So yes, but I'm -solutely..

"It's time for him. So two hundred seventy four of the clockwise Bod cast from relay FM recorded Friday, December twenty eighth two thousand eighteen Cooper is four people four tech topics. Thirty minutes. Welcome back to clockwise the tech podcast that if you start at precisely thirty minutes before the ball drop, then you will hear Dan Moore and say by everybody, right? As it starts the new year. I one of your co hosts mica sergeant and I am joined across the vast and ever changing internet by my co host, Dan Morgan. How're you doing, Dan? I'm doing okay mic. It's our last show of the year, which is always very exciting. So you know, I think it'll be a good one. I think so too. And something tells me that it's not going to be thirty minute show. It's can be twenty eight twenty nine something like that. And so I'm totally wrong with what I've said. But that is just how the cookie crumbles. I don't know. But we've got introduce our guests and to my left. I believe the first time on clockwise here on relay F M. It is the co host of Defoe cast over on the incomparable as well as the proprietor of a source of rice. It is Dan. Oh god. He says it is Dan Sturm. How you doing, Dan? I'm doing great. Thanks for having me. We are happy to have you here. I think I can keep my dad's straight. Yeah. I always have very strict one, Dan policy doesn't really work. To my left. Our second guessed the editor at IT pro today podcast the incomparable and my co host over on the legends tomorrow cast, the comparable among other things. It's Lisa Schweitzer highly. Hi there. I know nothing about race. Well, today's show is all about rice. Anyway, let's go ahead and get into the show because we've got just thirty minutes. So I'll kick things off. What was your favorite tech gift that you gave this year? Tell us your thoughts. Dan, Sturm not mourn. My tech gift of this past gift giving season. Here was something that I started by picking up on my own from black Friday to experiment with. It's kind of how it usually figure out what I'm going to buy for people for Christmas..

"Welcome back to clockwise tech podcast that seconds, the motion. I'm your co host Dan Moore and and I am joy to cross this internet of hours by my good friend and co host Mr. mica sergeant I doing mica, your honor, I object. Sustained, I guess we can. I guess we can go with that very well in the south. Apparently, this is of course the show where we discuss four TEP tech topics with two fantastic guests to my left this week. My former colleague from MacWorld any senior editor at the wire cutter Mr.. Dan Frakes is here Dan, how you doing. Hello. Good to be here. Thank you. Happy to have you and to my left is senior cloud developer advocate at Microsoft. I was gonna say Microsoft, and that's because I was reading Chris cream. I love this, Chris, Crema warrant on Twitter. It is Christina Warren. Hello. Hello. So happy to have you back. It's been a while it has and I'm glad to be back on. We're glad to have you back four. These amazing topics which will kick off now. So starting things off, I'm I, this little annoyance with the way that Apple's calendar app handles having the same event on multiple calendars. It's got like rather than collapsing into one event like some third party calendars do. It has like gives me three copies of the same event and it's just annoying and I wish they would fix it. It's not enough to quite drive me away from this off wear, but I'm kind of curious if you guys have a tech nitpick with product that you otherwise really like something that just like it's tiny little crazy, but not enough to make you abandoned that product. Dan. Still trying to figure out why you have multiple Kaunda's. Sorry, wait their shared calendars, like my fiance, and I have a calendar and then I have calendars. They're part of larger groups and sometimes want to block out and have that calendar event so that like multiple different people know I've occupied during the time. So, yeah. There you go. There experts. Thank you know with the life. I'm gonna talk about Tibo and that is because I still, I I know I'm like a dying breed here, but I'm still a huge Tibo fan too. So it's, I mean, I've tried like, you know, the Comcast DVR the AT DVR. Tvos still, but to me is like the by far the best thing, but. Early this year, they updated their interface and it just like ruining Tibo for me. It's like everything that Tiba was was great about it was that it was kind of like old school and it was super simple and easy to use, and they're like, let's put menus and pictures everywhere and make it as hard as Basel for you to watch the shows you wanna watch. And so I've actually got like we have multiple tvos in the house, and I've walled off in like the secure enclave every tvos that hasn't been updated yet. So it never gets updated. It's not enough to make me stop using it, but man is it bad. Okay. So for me, I think that this might not quite fit spirit of of the law as we definitely having very law themed episode. It seems, but the thing that I'm going to complain about, it's kind of a beggars. Can't be choosers situation. But here I was big ING for them for them being apple to bring home to the MAC so that I could control my home kit gadgets on my MAC and you seri- on the MAC to do so, but what's missing and what doesn't make sense to me for not being included is a today, which it I think it would be nice because I do actually use that bar that you know the bar that slides out of the side of your screen that has notifications and the today, which it's us those things and use them pretty regularly. And so to be really nice if within that today bar, I could have just a little widget that has like my most popular. Scenes, which is a kin to what you get in control center on IOS. You can swipe down from the right side of your phone. You can force are three d. touch and then the different home options, your favorite scenes and.

"Welcome back to clockwise the tech podcast that works every time sixty percent of the time. I'm your host Dan Moore, and I'm joined by my fellow host my good friend Mr. Micha sergeant how you doing today. Mike, I am doing well. It's a part of that sixty percent today with working. You're really, you're really phone ended in scaping it in today. Skype it in. All right. Well, this is of course the show where we invite onto fantastic guests to talk about technology to my left. One of my former colleagues at MacWorld and the author of the brand new take control of MAC OS Mojave Shelly mcfarland's here. Hi Shelley at low. Dan. Thanks for being here and to my left is rogue amoeba. I don't know. Maybe you've heard of that application before rogue amoeba. Paul cfasf this. Hello, Paul, Howdy. I dance said you have to excellent guests Shali's here. Who am I replacing. Last minute addition. All right. So I'll kick things off with the first of our four topics. Apples I work sweet continued to become more and more competent over the years. I was particularly impressed to a recent update, two numbers which brought a smart categories feature that's a little table esque. My question is, do you guys rely on I work for your productivity suite needs? Is there some other set of apps that you prefer? Maybe some big behemoth that rhymes with Microsoft? I don't know. But my my question is what what do you use when it comes to your productivity needs? Shali. Well, Microsoft is not my my apps. We'd of choice and neither is pages and the whole. I work sweet. I am a Google docs kind of gal now, and I do pretty much all my work in Koogle docs except for the take control books. We actually right in nicest writer, so that's really out from left field. That's what. We do all the big books in, but I have done page layout in pages and it is. It's pretty good. It often confuses me, but I have managed to do some cookbooks and all sorts of kid kind of things in it. But I would say Google has toppled Microsoft for me, and I work isn't really in the running. It's funny. You know, someone is being very honest, whenever their voice raises about three octaves it's pretty good. I use the, I work sweet for. I don't know everything that is just something I guess that I'm creating locally. I guess the best way to put it. But yeah, everything else I do in in Google docs or rather Google's suite of applications. In fact, we are looking at a Google sheet right now, some of highest. Behind the curtain. There's your peak. I will say though it has certainly become more and more powerful and I appreciate the improvements that continue to be made with it that you know, bring it in line with some of the other applications that are out there. And I think it feels less bloated than the Microsoft suite of products because a just had opened up Microsoft Word on someone's computer the other day, and it took his finally open now. Took forever to load. And once it loaded it had like seventy five tool bars and it looked terrible. Like what? No, this is ridiculous. So I'm very happy that Apple's I work sweet has most of the stuff that I need and I can use Google docs and Google sheets and at cetera for the rest. So I actually, it sounds like I'm a minority. I use Mejia's a little bit for really simple word processing stuff. I use numbers for a decent number of spreadsheets that are fairly simple, but that you know, I do a little bit of math in there a little bit of. Basic spreadsheet work. So I use both of them fairly frequently, but lately I've been stuck using word. I've been getting some legal documents contracts back and forth, and I don't trust track changes across. Between pages and word. So if people don't know, attract changes is basically like someone sends you document. You make some changes. It goes back to them. They can see what the changes were and accept them or just them themselves and legal contract that something that you kick back and forth the half dozen times. I have no idea if pages handles this properly. Someone might well tell me that it does, but I don't trust it. When you know the lawyers are all using word. I just wanna be using the same thing that they are..

"Welcome back to clockwise. The tech podcast that's just in time every time. My name is Mike is sergeant, and I am joined across the internet by my co host. Good buddy. Good pal, good friend and all around. Good dude. It's Dan Moore and hi, Dan, I thought for a second. Surely you must be introducing somebody else, but, oh, it's me, hey, that's great. That's good. Yeah, you get. You get feel this time. Congratulations. Here's your metal. Here's your trophy. And now it's time it's time to introduce our awesome guests to my left is also a good, good putty, good buddy, good, pow, and self proclaimed nerd of the internet. And of course, the co host of automates right here on really FM. It's Rosemary orchard. Hello rose. Hello, thank you for having me. We are so happy to have you here with us and to my left is a senior writer at Tom's guide and a former colleague of mine from our mackerel days. Caitlyn mcgarry bag high Caitlyn. Hi. How are you guys? You're doing very well. We are glad that you could all be here today. Yes, so happy to have you here and so happy to get things rolling. You not works. Got two guests for topics. Thirty minutes of kick things off to talk about this application. We're using right now. Skype just well. Microsoft's just announced that Skype is going to be doing call recording now for those. Us who are podcasters. It's kind of interesting kind of exciting. We've had to use third party applications to do call recording in the past, and now it's apparently gonna be as simple as right, clicking within Skype and choosing to start recording the call. Most interesting is the fact that Microsoft's current operating system doesn't support the call record against Skype, so they're going to be coming out that a little bit later. But I'm curious for those of you who do podcasting is this interesting to you? Do you plan to continue to use third party tools? And then I think the more important discussion here is sort of the implications of a built in call recording feature because I don't know about you, but when I went to journalism school, I learned you kind of got to ask before you go about recording people's voices for things rose. Let's get your thoughts. Well, as a podcast, it's great because especially if they get rid of the headphone, Jack on the ipad, then my solution for backup coal recording will die. When I up grade. So from that perspective, I really like it as a safety net, but I do worry because in some I know in some US states, Sears, the ability of one party consents in the other party is ultimately opted in and then some states you have two party consent, but there are one hundred ninety. Seven countries in the world has Microsoft really their legal team to go through the lows of every single country is a banner at the top of the screen notifying you that you're being recorded really enough for all of this. And honestly, I can imagine my grandmother pricing something like this by accident, and then you know, getting very scared. I'm very confused and stopping using Skype because did something she didn't expect that's not user friendly. So from that perspective, I am a little concerned and I'm sure somebody's going to try and find a way to hack it so that you don't get notified if you'll being recorded. And then I think we might have some big problems on our hands from podcasting perspective. I don't think this is going to. Plant the tools that we already use largely because from what I can tell, this is not independent recording of tracks. It seems to be a cloud based recording of your entire call and well, it doesn't clued things like video which can be handy if you're putting together a video podcast. Most of the podcasters I know tend to prefer these what we call the double ended method, which is essentially where each individual participant report records. They're called locally because that way voids any of the hiccups that Skype going across the network introduces that said the possibilities for recording podcasts via has been extremely limited. So this at least introduces as as rose was saying the ability to have recording a podcast that you do on your vice, which is great. But again, subject to those same limitations, if there were an option to have local recordings and that having that sort of like done it as an individual track by track basis, that would make things a lot better for podcasters..
