"You haven't launched podcast yet, you're going to want to jump into our new facebook group that is specifically designed for people who have not launched their podcast yet, and we're doing a whole really freaking cool five day challenge in there. In August and I'm really excited for that. So jump there have you have lots of podcasts yet it's going to be the best investment of your time to make sure your show gets off on the right foot and you start to make sales with it. You start to grow your influence with its organically well for their deals jump in like I said, the four things I've learned when it comes to podcast categorize making shows rank in twenty twenty. Your podcast gets off on the right foot. Let's go ahead and jump in. So number one number one thing I've learned and credit this the Dan Meisner he did a really really great I've studied him for a little while now, and some of the things he talks about is like first of all, knowing the most competitive categories. That are in the space. So you know what you're dumping into. Right. So people you can make your own hundreds and inferences but some of the things he talked about were there are three key ones that I can remember that he really hit on. That were high high, highly competitive, right? The first one was Christianity and had my my notes appear. So if you guys are on the Audio version just Put My motion my notes. So you make sure inside of the religion and spirituality suck main category because there's main categories and subcategories inside the main category under religion spirituality one of the most if not the most competitive niches is Christianity. So that's a big when you gotta know the other two are business. The business category overall is growing and getting bigger specifically, entrepreneurship and marketing. So those are a couple other big ones in the space. Pretty, much all of the business podcasts subcategories are going to be quite competitive careers, entrepreneurship Investing Management Marketing, and nonprofit those are all quite competitive I would say. Don't quote me on this, but it's for the most part I would say nonprofit is the least competitive. So just so you know you guys know off the bats those are some of the most competitive ones the other ones that are really competitive, our health and fitness, and that's the main category. But underneath that alternative health mental health and fitness are extremely competitive. Now doesn't mean you can't crush it in those niches. That means that you need to make sure that you are being a bit more thoughtful with your how you promote your show. You'd more more consistent if you want to rank higher because the people in those categories are doing a. Good job and there's a lot of people in there fighting for attention. So that means things like your title needs to be really well written. It needs to be a very benefit. Driven title needs to speak to the exact person you're trying to talk to not just a general audience. Your artwork needs to be on point art work needs to be compelling in a way that gets people excited couple of things there. So that's the first thing right there. The categories that are extremely competitive, Christianity pretty much most of them in the business category subcategory, and then also health and fitness and health a subcategories, mental health, alternative health, and fitness. First thing right there. Second thing is if you're not in the right logical category meaning if I have a podcast about sports might category is like arts and then like fashion beauty. It's not gonNa make sense. I'M NOT GONNA get found by other people quite simple but very, very important because some people will try to gain the system and try to jump into categories. They don't belong in and tried to shoot the rankings. Like shooting yourself in the foot because it's not gonNA help 'cause you're ranking in the wrong category. So don't do that being the right logical categories for you when so that you can get found by people who are looking for your show in those categories. Number one Christianity. Very very competitive, most of the business subcategories and then as well as health and fitness. All very, very competitive number two don't be in the wrong category that doesn't make sense view. Third one here is apple podcasts gives you two categories. The most important one is the primary category. So the primer category in the secondary category primary is the most important and that's when you want to focus on. So for example, home launching a podcast about entrepreneurship about interviewing people who are amazing my space I would have the first category as entrepreneurship. So business subcategory entrepreneurship, that's my primary, and then maybe throw in something else maybe under the education space like education, how to or something. and. I'm looking at you on the video looking at the categories right here. So. That's what I would do. I would make sure that my most like the most relative category to my topic is going to be I so that I can get found by people who are looking in that in that category the second category is not as important, but just know that it's another it's still important to make sure you're out of your in another holder category. For example, I would not do a podcast or launch podcasts in and make the categories business under a subcategory entrepreneurship and business under sub category management that means I can only rank in three categories. That make sense he only bring in three categories like that but if I did Business an entrepreneurship for the first one, and then maybe education. subcategory how to in the second one? I can then rank in four categories you ranking the main category subcategory, and then you would rank in the other maintenance of categories as well. But if you pick one in the same main category, only get to confusing here. It's going to be hard. You'RE GONNA rank in three places. So that's why I want to make sure I have different. Categories but I'm always going to make sure that my primary ones the Mon is the one that's the most relative to my content. Each category has its own top shows list and are harder than others to get on like we've talked about to crack because some are harder somewhere where it's more competitive. So being in the one that makes the most sense is an reachable is important. So if let's just say for example, you have a podcast that has. That would what you're covering can really fit into two categories and one is more competitive than the other. While if they're all things being equal, you should obviously go for the short one that is least competitive and I'll drop the link to the article that Dan Meisner posted because it was a really article that showed like. About like, Hey, here's the category here. The categories like that are most competitive by episodes I think Yeltsin had it by number of downloads or been by number of podcasts like as a whole in that category. So he had he had some really good numbers on like that. Let you know which ones are most competitive by different criteria you can make your own. Inferences by by that that graph. So using that graph though let's just say my podcast could fit into like news subcategory business news or it could fit under business subcategory ship very very well both of them would make sense. I would go ahead and try and pick the one that is least competitive. So that I can rank higher specially for my for my primary category, and then I picked the other one as a secondary hold that a sense make sure you prioritize the primary category look at the numbers inside of that article that help you determine what show is, which places more competitive. We use this with some of our agency clients to make sure that we're getting them ranking as. High as possible, and then also another thing we didn't talk about which keywords keywords nevermind category second keywords are going to be found better podcast. Seo's big thing depending on which category which directories you're in whether it's like spotify or apple or stitcher they all use different criteria when it comes to pulling up your show when someone types cured. So for example, some places will crawl the podcast description. Apple podcasts does not. So if you're trying to put keywords in your podcast subscription on apple podcast, it's not really gonNA help you because they don't crawl that only things that they crawl the title, the author tag and the actual episode title. So knowing that kind of stuff making sure you're putting the right keywords in your titles, your in your.

"A I or the artificial intelligence to transcribe your audio so you go there you give them your rss feed so you go to creators. That audio burst B. U. R. S. T. DOT COM. You put in your RSS Feet in do your last ten episodes so do it now. That way you'll have from your last ten away going forward and you can put multiple podcasts in this tool as well on the same account. So go over there and put in your podcasts. Rss Feed now if you have an accent or if you find that sometimes you don't articulate as much as you think you do you know it's going to get it wrong because this is all being done by machine so you're still going to have to go through these transcripts and find places where it you know. You have to catch the mistakes that it may but they say that there's eighty percent accuracy accuracy and remember eighty percent. Accuracy is great. When it's free right so I think is something once again that all podcasters should go over. Sign up for audio burst remember. The link is creators. Dot Audio Burst Dot Com. But of course I'll have all those links and the show notes and let's move on to our final topic of today's podcast episode. So this final topic. I want to recall. I want you to recall about six months ago apple. Podcast decided that they were going to revamp. All of the podcasting categories. So Oh my gosh. It just drove everybody nuts. Because a lot of cases you had to switch that category that you were in because they got rid of it and then they also added a lot of categories to accommodate what they thought was the wave of new podcast that come in because they had not changed those categories in like twelve thirteen years so like all these true crime podcast and a lot of news. Podcasts and daily podcast didn't really have a category to go into. So they revamped the categories. Move some things around. Got Rid of ones like the one that I was in which is podcasting. They got rid of you know and I am told that part of the reason why they got rid of podcasting and why why they may have got. Because I don't think they actually ever came out and said this is just what people suspect is because people were using podcasting by mistake they thought when they signed up and they had to fill out their categories they would just pick OAS surpassed so I should be in a podcast category rate. No only if you're talking about podcasts. Income or podcast so so they got rid of it and so I. I wasn't upset though. I'm still in the technology. Category which is a broader category. So here's the news about this. There is a fellow that works for an outfit called Pacific content. His name is Dan. Meisner Meisner is spelled M. I. S. E. N. E. R. and they have a blog over on medium. But you know it's branded blog and he talks a lot about podcasting and what he's done or were. Those guys of Pacific content have done is create this interactive chart and this chart takes a look at the most crowded categories and apple podcasts as a February twenty twenty and. I think they do this regularly. They may may do it every month. But it's really neat to go over there and you'll see the biggest categories and a lot of people get surprised when they hear this. The biggest category of podcasts is religion and spirituality l. that's the biggest category but with envy category. They're subcategories so this chart what I love about it. It's interactive so you can go over. You can hover over your category or the category that you're interested in. It'll tell you how many podcasts are an apple podcasts. In that category. Because you know there's over eight hundred thousand podcasts and apple podcasts. Or it'll tell you the breakdown by the main category as well as all of the sub categories. And you can do this. It's free it's just a chart. It's just really interactive and it's really cool the way it works so wanted to share that with you definitely have links to all of the stuff in the show notes guys. It's such an exciting time for all this space and all of this interests. That is coming to podcasting. I want to keep you guys up to date as much as I possibly can. There's so many stories that there's no way I can cover them all but I want to curate them and bring to your attention those. I think that you can either take action all right away or that. You just need to be aware of. For example. In the beginning of today's episode I talked about spotify in-house spotify acquired ringer. Now this got my wheels turning just out of curiosity I want to know. What is it like to be on a network and then find out that network got acquired? Another thing that came to mind was. How do you get to be part of the Ringer Network? This is why I introduced you to the Gimblett Academy where they were talking about pitching shows and you can go to. They Gimblett Academy listened to those five episodes and learn about how to pitch your show and think about the content that you're putting I is it pitch worthy. In Fact Alex Bloomberg tells a story in the Gimblett Academy of a podcast that he had an idea for that after he thought about it because he got turned down he pitched the podcast and you got rejected and he thought about it afterwards and he was like well. Yeah because it was a dumb idea. He had an idea of something that he thought would be popular but he really didn't even have an interest in this specific topic. I'm not gonNa tell you what it is. I want you to go and listen to it and I want you to hear him. Tell the story. Because he's eloquent with doing then he also makes the big bucks to do so so but I've what if anyone knows anybody? That's on the ringer network. I would love to hear an interview with any of these folks. I want to say guys by these guys and Gals I do believe and what they feel like with having a show that's on a network and then that whole network gets acquired. I don't know if the folks at ringer talk to each individual podcast host and said. Hey we're getting acquire by spotify. Do you WANNA stay part of network. Do you WANNA leave or do they have contracts in place already were they. Don't even have to go and talk and tell them anything. Are they hearing it through the grapevine today find our opened up the news or independent news like me from James Cridland in what we got acquired? I didn't know I don't know I'm just kidding. I don't think it's I think that most of those podcasts hosts are really happy about the deal but I would love to know because when you're talking about thirty podcasts that's a Lotta podcast host right and not just the host cause remember D. shows are Done with Engineers and they may even have a sound engineer. I don't know each podcast probably has its own set of staff that are working on the show not just the on air talent like independent us pod casters. Who do everything from show notes to research to our own sound engineering and so forth so I just wanted to give you guys inspiration. I want you guys to think about these kinds of things that are out here. I want you to know that, yeah you could be part of a network and you could get acquired and you can get a big payday. But, you know, listen to the Gimlet Academy to know if your show is pitch- worthy. So I'm bringing you through a process and then also then you know that there's all these tools out there for us who are indie podcasters right now, who haven't got acquired who may or may not be part of a network and we're still here grinding. We know we have to pod cast and we know we have to keep our show going and we have to be consistent with but we also know how to market that show too. So I wanted to bring you those tools as well so with all that said I am going to end today's episode on a positive note for you to keep you inspired and to keep you coming back and I will talk to you in the next episode and by the way please think about doing a review and leaving afor over review Apple on Pod casts for The Anchor Show! Bye now.

"There as a business entity and be, you know, totally accessible via messages, private message on my page, and all of that stuff that said, the algorithm is skewed on Facebook to really only show on people's feeds when you post as a profile if you post as a page, you have to have somebody like your page, and I have I don't have very many likes on my page. I have like maybe a little bit over three hundred. Why because I started the page last year and two because I don't tell people like it like share it. I mean, I'm just like there it is. 'cause I wanted it finally hit me. And so I have a lot more people that are friends that have been around for so long that are. That's what I did before. So it's already skewed towards me being forced to be present as a profile. While versus as a page. I don't have a choice other than to keep promoting people in begging people to like my page. Why? Because I want you to see me on your feet that seems very not cool. Does that in any way like make you go like yeah? You know, why does she need to be there as a human? As a person. Maybe the good thing is. There's going to be some of us that are going to embrace this at Dopp that jump in there and play with it. And then LC you're not confortable. So you could stay away from it, and then after a while he could be watching. And if becomes more palatable to you than you would just jump in. So I think they're trying. I think they're trying. Yes. All right. I would let you guys love them. And then I will be the dissenter. How about that? All right. Sounds good. Let's is there anything else that we more that we need to talk about when it comes to Facebook and all the stuff that they're doing to change the world. Arthur, voter thick. We beat this one that death. I think you're right to death the pain did that do that. So just we have a new free. Podcasting service podcast. Red circle launched this week with focus on helping small shows grow first step, releasing a feature that assist podcasters in cross promotion. So I guess that means that they're going to have a little database or messaging. It looks like where similar shows to yours, you'll be prompted to ask, if they want to do a little trade ski, which is kind of a nice idea, because I have heard, maybe it was from, John, that when you cross promote you guys, it does help get more listeners. So that's a nice thing. I've not tried. Have you tried it? Do you try every new host out? How many shows do you have out there, Elsie podcast apps? Is that what you're talking about? There's not an app. It's a host. No, dude. It's also an app for listening. Oh, right. Okay. Yeah. Remember, razzle 's, it's a candy and gum. Well, this is kind of like that. Chocolate and peanut butter chocolate and peanut butter to great things that go great together. Although I mean have we not been burnt enough? Have we not been smacked with a stick, and feel that we have we been burned enough? And can I go and make another fifteen shows that I will not actually have more than three episodes on because I wanna play with an app. I mean, I've been staring at this red circle thing now, and I'm like, what could I do with this just to play with it? And I got nothing. I'm out of band with the play with a new app, maybe down the road. But I'm not gonna take first thing I'm not going to do is import a show there. I'm not going to do that. But again the same thing. Now I haven't done anything with anchor yet. I mean if people are still the ship, there's going to be in how Elsie feels about Facebook. I feel about these free podcasting hosts I afraid of the day, when anchor says get your stuff off anchor. We're going to be doing this because we were bought by somebody. That's what makes me nervous. Yeah. Well, they were just born born. But by Spotify. So I think that what they might do is what I will. They all they've always said that they're going to remain free, but, you know, I mean I don't know. But maybe they will at some point charge something I don't know. I think that what it is why these are it's just hard because they this podcast host they are banking on drying, people to them, because it's free, right? If you wanna podcast, you can start it here and they are extra bonus is being able to share primos with other shows like you opt into this, and you could play it within it. So you don't even have to do an add it, it already is built in there. So you just say, yes, and then these things come in. It's kind of like a built in add add stitching technology kind of thing. But in order for something like that to work, you do have to have. The people using it. So because only the people who are using that are getting the benefit of using the tools. So if there are one hundred podcasters using red circle, there's only one hundred podcasters that you can promote also because maybe, there's some that you don't like you don't even while you don't have them on the show. Nobody appeals to the people that you are, like, why would we want them to? Why would we want to support not support? But promote that that show if you don't like it or doesn't appeal to your audience. Right. So the bigger the pool, the, the more this would make sense, but they're not going to get more people to do it because I don't even not to say, I'm lost. I I'm like Well somebody. with this with okay. So anchor put a lot of emotion into getting people to come in and start podcasting red circle has done that yet. And here's the other thing one, because we do you know the shows that I do not this show, but so we try to do thing that drives me crazy about podcasters love you podcasters, but you cannot do thirty second promo. Every promo is a minute. A minute fifteen minute twenty and nobody wants to listen to a promo about another podcast for that long. So you don't wanna put that show. So if you could tighten up and do a nice tight thirty second promo, you could do this amongst yourselves. You could say this is show you could pick your promos that you would like to add into your show now I know that's a lot of production that you have to do and some people can't do production. So I get that, too. And this would also do that. But then okay, so I'm doing this podcast on red circle when do these promos coming in. It'd be is it a pre roll is it a you know, at the end? And they just chop you off in the middle of a sentence and put in a promo. How does that work here? I don't know that yet. So that's the that's the problem. Yeah. You gotta wait and see I guess I'm gonna have to play with. It's like that all you got but you don't really like it. Which you like, okay? I'll start playing when it see if I like it or not. I don't know. That's right. That's not a terrible thing is it. It's the toy that your dad really wanted when he was a kid, but he didn't get it. So he gave it to you. And you're like, what's this red circle? You know what that is for me baseball bat. See no interest, my father as the oldest. I also served as the son in the family. I do have to look at old cars with him and go to the frigging. Batting cage was a good time. Good times as anyway. I think we are finished with the news is what I assume and now we're moving into some tips. These two. Guys. I don't know if you've seen this blog post from Pacific content which was just acquired actually in the news. But anyway, so Pacific content writes this, they're like these amazing articles on medium that they put out. But there this one I thought everybody needs to read, in fact, I'm not gonna read from it too much. I just want y'all who are listening to go. Read it the title of this article is Jimmy and the magic pizza shop. And the reason that I think that this is a brilliant article by Dan Meisner is that he essentially breaks down, why podcasting podcasting industry has opted in to have to complying to the measurement standards for download numbers, and he does it by creating this lovely about a four of a business that has free pizza for everybody and the pizza owners wanting. To measure how many people are coming to get their pizzas every day, and and how that goes. So it was very it was a very enlightening article I think he does a fantastic job of explaining minute very technical details about download statistics and y you don't count some things and why this is important for the industry as a whole so that we all know that if you get one hundred downloads on podcast, host, a and podcast host be and podcast, coz see all have one hundred downloads because they have all moved to the measurement standards. They are all going to be one hundred but if somebody doesn't really apply this, there might be fluctuation, and why that is the case. And why that also means. Is that it doesn't mean that if you were with a host that does not have this kind of filtering, if you were getting one thousand downloads in that host, and then you go to somebody who has put the standards in place with their measurement gets one hundred it doesn't mean that you have lost audience. It just means that you are now measuring the best that you possibly can by filtering things that might have been giving you data. That is not true. May I say that? So I don't know if you've had a chance to read it just but I do think it is reading must read for everybody, and I'm gonna put a link in the show notes. Okay. So that you guys can geek out on it. It is a kind of a long read. It's an eight minute read. So you do need to kind of sit down, and, but it's fun. It's like it's a fun read because he really does talk about pizza a lot and who doesn't wanna talk about pizza. You don't have a question, which would really and I don't understand why they don't do this because radio stations they have a someone that goes out and checks the ratings and then h radio station gets a report about what their ratings are. So why isn't that maybe the podcast hosts can publish the downloads for everybody's podcast? Why is that a secret? Why can't they just published? So when people advertisers, anybody wants to go look it up..
