Patriot dot com slash clear and vivid. This is clear and vivid. And now back to my conversation with dan lieberman. I love that you've devoted time to debunking myths about movement and exercise like the one. That's very common. Now that are chairs are trying to kill us. Yeah i actually you know. I think one of the reasons why maybe it was a little harsh in that chapter. But you know i i think one of the reasons people are so skeptical about science. Is that we sometimes oversimplify we which we scare people and to say that's running as you know. Sitting is the new smoking. Which is which has become a very common phrase. I understand that the the the impetus behind it right. You know people who sit too much do. Do you know. Pay a cost. It's good to be physically active. But but you know a chair is not like a like a cigarette. I mean cigarettes toxin. You know that you inhale. I mean everybody knows. Cigarettes are bad for you but sitting is perfectly normal thing to do. My my dog spends her days spent in the house sitting all over the place. And if you go into a hunter gatherer camp or village of farmers in anywhere in the world. People are sitting all the time So clearly anybody who's got a little bit of spark of independence must realize that that that they're being exaggerated too right. And i think we need to tell people the truth and turns out that when you measure you know sitting in and people who don't even own chairs the hunter-gatherers who own no furniture whatsoever. They sit ten hours a day as much as i do like you point out that the the way they shit he's not as harmful as the way we sit. I mean we make a distinction between a stool and a chair with a back. That's right so there are. There are better and worse ways to sit and the two things one is that they sit more actively in the sense that they've either sitting on the ground or they don't have back rests on their chairs or you know or stools benches and and that requires them to use a little bit of muscle effort and that that just even a little bit of muscle effort turns out to be really good. It's like turning your car. Engine on right turns on all kinds of genes that uses up some of the sugar in your bloodstream. And then the other thing is that they get up all the time you know you. Nobody sitting in front of a tv. You know glued to you know a great movie. Maybe you're in the movie right. But but then i don't even get up to get a cookie right but nobody's sitting there for hours. Just staring at a screen right they. They have to get up because you know their children are running around after nine the fire. They're doing this. they're doing that. So people get up on a regular basis every fifteen minutes or so and it turns out. That's really good because it kinda wakes up your body again and so interrupted city us. You can sit. The same amount to people can sit for for several hours but the person who sits and gets up every once in a while even over that same time period just to go to the bathroom and get a cup of tea something like that a much healthier outcome than the person who sits the exactly the same amount of time but in an uninterrupted about another myth that has grown apparently. He's the idea that you can't lose weight. by hawking. yeah yeah. This is still controversial. So what's your take on that. So look it is true that if you want to lose weight. Dieting is way more effective than exercise. And that's because for two reasons. The first is that. I went for a five mile. Run this morning. And i burned about five hundred calories and you know if i eat just a few pieces of bacon. That's the same amount of calories right. It's it takes a lot of effort to to burn a lot of calories but it's much easier just not eat a few pieces of bacon right so so if you want to lose weight by by going into called negative energy balance you can go into much more negative energy balance much more easily by dieting than exercising. So that's one reason and then the other is that once. I got back from iran. I was hungry. So i i ate something right. I we have what's called metabolic compensation you you. Don't you know you make up for some of that and it also may have some effects on your metabolism and the third issue is most of the studies that are done so remember. We talked about earlier that the standard recommendation for for minimum levels of physical activities. One hundred and fifty minutes a week. So what do people do when they studying weight loss they they get people on that one hundred and fifty minutes a week regimen which is just twenty one minutes a day of of exercise at a brisk walk and they do it for you just a few weeks because nobody can do a study for very long and guess what they find. They find that people. Don't lose much weight if you watch if you walked twenty minutes a day but if you actually have people do you know like forty minutes a day like with three hundred minutes a week turns out people do lose weight and if you have even more people do lease even more weight so it turns out that the dose really matters and so you you're never going to able to lose a lot of weight really fast by but many many many studies gold standard randomized control studies show that people can lose weight slowly surely not rapidly by by exercising and even more importantly the what the what the data show us is that physical activity exercise is important for preventing weight gain in the first place because most diets fail and people lose the weight and then comes right back right and but but but people who exercise during and or after the especially after the diet are much more likely to keep that weight off that that's remarkable and that even is true if you're only doing twenty one minutes a day yeah i mean you know you're not going to get as much of a benefit from twenty one minutes days if you more but even twenty one minutes a day is important but even then i think we also pay a little bit too much tie exercise too much to wait. I think In that a lot of people can feel well. If i'm not gonna lose weight why should exercise right But but you know the. The benefits of exercise are independent of the weight loss. You can even if you don't manage to lose a lot of weight even if you only exercise ten minutes a day so sixty minutes a week. The evidence shows that there's still a substantial benefit in terms of many diseases that you might otherwise get in terms of what we call mortality and morbidity the rate at which you're likely to die and the and the chronic illnesses which are which are which are more vulnerable to so so even even ten minutes a day of just moderate physical activity can lower somebody's rate of mortality by about thirty percent. That's that's huge. That's enormous so even even a little bit is great even if you don't lose any weight.

"I'm allen older and this is clear in vivid conversations about connecting and communicating for me the apotheosis of how horrible moderate exercise the treadmill. Why it's on the cover. That's why i kind of use it throughout the book as a kind of a kind of a running joke but think about it. It's a horrible noisy nasty expensive machine that makes you work really hard to get nowhere to wait to tolerate. A treadmill is to either listen to something is into some good music. Listening to a podcast. Watch something but nobody can tolerate it on. Its own at least not for more than a few minutes. I mean it's it's a form of torture. It's an actually. That's kind of one of the jokes because the treadmill was actually invented as a form of torture. That's harvard anthropology. Professor dan lieberman and in case. It sounds like he's anti exercise. Here's the full title of the book. He's just written exercised. Why something we never evolved to do is healthy and rewarding an avid runner himself. Dan takes an entertaining. Look at what. Most of our ancestors would have thought was crazy voluntary physical activity. This is going to be fun because you deal with the subject. I cope with everyday along with people. Well that's why i wrote. It was eye opening in many ways. the book you wrote and i think one of the things that i hadn't thought about before is kind of the essence of the book. Which is the difference between exercise and movement. Well thank you. I mean it's you know. It's how i started the book right That you know we you know we all do physical activity. That's that's something that humans doing for millions of years and every other animal does it's just moving around doing stuff but but exercise is really a very special kind of modern strange form of physical activity that nobody ever did until recently. Because it's it's it's it's voluntary. It's discretional physical activity for the sake of health and fitness and until recently. Nobody had to do that. So it's it's something we've invented in the modern world along with reading and various other things. We never did before to the other thing that you say that is so interesting is that you really can't get a good grasp of exercise or movement unless you look at it from the point of view of evolution and anthropology both. Yeah yeah and that and you've really spent your life doing that. Well i've i've had the really the good fortune to to be paid to travel and spend time With people in different parts of the world in different cultures because if you want to have an understanding of what human body really is like and and what we're evolved for and and how people use their bodies we have to leave you know boston massachusetts and other places like that and and traveled other parts of the world and spend time with people and and observing and participate and and you know see how how really other people use their bodies. It's eye opening. I i remember a scene in the book where a member of one of these tribes looked at. You like you're crazy when you said you ran for no particular reason you know. It's sometimes these moments happened but that was really the moment. I thought about writing this book. Because i was i was working with them. Some some tara who mara farmers so these are subsistence farmers They grow corn and and and beans and squash and up in the epa in a very remote area of northern mexico. And they're also very famous for their long distance. Running and i was traveling around and collecting data on running and had being the good anthropologist. I had my list of questions. And and one of my questions was about how they train for running. And i was told that this guy i was interviewing was a famous old old. Elderly runner was in his seventies and can still read my fifty miles right and so it was working with the translator and and and he wasn't the first person who struggled with this question because the translator was clearly having a hard time it conveying this particular question which is training because it turns out. There's no word for training in this language because nobody does it and so when she finally explained that this gringo. Who's asking him questions. You know runs at five miles every morning to stay in shape and to prepare for racist. He looked at me. I mean i remember. It was like one of those moments. He looked at me kind of with pity and he's and he said to her. Why would anybody run if they didn't have to. And it was kind of one of those moments where i realized yeah i guess what i do. You know to stay. Fit is a very modern strange thing and until recently you know nobody did that and that was kind of the moment. I thought you know that's going to be my next book. Well we i get the impression we're sort of forced into the idea of running not because we're chasing or being chased but we we have to make up for the fact that we have a washing machine. We have a car. yeah we have. We have things that do for us. What your friend in the mountains there. He had to exert himself to accomplish. That's absolutely right. I mean until recently people had to do physical activity all the time in order to survive including as they got older people there was no retirement in the in the in the old days people people worked until until they dropped right and and and now we have somebody labor saving devices we have cars we have shopping carts we have. Our suitcases are on wheels. We have escalators elevators. We have electric toothbrushes. Electric can openers. I mean zimba's to clean our floors. I mean so today. In this very bizarre modern world we have to choose to do unnecessary physical activity right Sometimes for example you go to a building and you want to take the stairs. You have to actually kind of look for them. It's kind of harder to take the stairs than than take the elevator. So so we you know. That's a very modern recent thing and and and and and but it's also very ancient to kind of not want to take the stairs right. I bet if you put an escalator in in the copper canyons where where my friend was or or in the kalahari desert people there would take the escalator to you know to save energy. It's it's an instinct. And i think i think it's important because a lot of people feel bad about themselves today right. People feel feel shamed and blamed for for basic instincts. If we take the escalator you feel kind of bad about ourselves. Like oh my god i'm lazy christen. He won't take the stairs because the suitcase with wheels doesn't go up another reason to you know we're made to feel like there's something wrong with us but actually it's totally normal and instinctive to want to to save energy because yeah that point of view you did you just don't hear often and it's empathic. It sounds to me like a way to to communicate more effectively about the whole question of if we're gonna get healthier by moving more..

"That's a big rig collision. It shut down in both directions, possibly for another 20 to 30 minutes or so, and traffic is diverted over to American Canyon Road, and it is now packed Joe McConnell for KQED and on KQED.
