Midterm elections latest: Dems take the House, GOP expands hold in Senate
"The midterm election results continued to come into the ten ten wins room some key races still too close to call locally and across the nation. But here are some of the things we know for sure right now, the Democrats have won enough seats to take control of the house of representatives with help from voters in New York and New Jersey who flipped to Republican districts blew the Republicans are expanding their majority in the US Senate after defeating democratic incumbents who served in states Donald Trump won in two thousand sixteen. The biggest local upset in our area was on Staten Island, where Republican congressman has been defeated New York City's entire congressional delegation will be made up of Democrats now and the newest faces are much younger Alexandria, Cossio Cortez. Maybe the youngest new member of congress. But max rose is not far behind a thirty one year old army veteran who will represent Staten Island and part of Brooklyn after a hard fought campaign against Dan. Donovan we believe in an America. We all know is possible. One way doesn't matter. What? Your race is what's your color, your sexual orientation, your grave Donovan conceded that I don't look at this. As a sad occasion. I look at this. As the end of something that I've enjoyed so much warmer, Staten Island DA vacating the seat he'd held for three years winning it in a special election in two thousand fifteen to replace Michael Grimm, whom he defeated in this year's primary. Sonia Rincon ten ten wins. News Republican congressman Peter King and Lee Zeldin will retain their seats on Long Island, along with Democrats, Kathleen rice, and Tom Swazi democrat. Antonio Delgado has ousted freshman Republican congressman John facile in Hudson valley swing district wins news time one zero four New Jersey voters were asked to choose between two unpopular men in the Garden State, Bob Menendez and Donald Trump. They chose the democrat at the end of a bitter campaign. Bob Menendez stood victorious on the stage. But not quite ready to let it go. I'm so proud that New Jersey rejected the politics of personal. Structure, the incumbent democrat winning eight third-term knocking off Republican Bob Yuga. I wasn't the right messenger to get it delivered. But we've opened the door let people know that we really care about. And the people were jersey do deserve better. Menendez vowed to continue to fight continuing to earn the respective voters. I'm fighting for you. I always have. And I always will because we're in this all together. Thank you so much. Jones. Tim ten wins in HOGAN Democrats flipped GOP seats. In New Jersey, Mikey Cheryl a veteran. One time prosecutor winning in the twelfth district over Republican assemblyman Jay Webber after congressman Rodney freeling housing announced his retirement democratic state Senator Jeff Andrew winning in the second district over Republican Trump ally, Seth Grossman, Tom Malinowski. Former State Department official under President Obama defeating five term Republican incumbent Leonard Lance in the seventh district cheryl's victory along the democratic incumbent congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman win. And the twelfth district means New Jersey will have to women represented in the house for the first time since nineteen eighty two still too close to call this morning the nasty race between Trump supporting Congressman Tom McArthur. And democrat Andy Kim, less than half of a percent separates them at last count. Governor Andrew Cuomo cruising to victory over Republican duchess county, executive Mark Marlin our governor Cuomo spoke strongly and passionately about the New York of the future invoking his father's term for. His view as a pragmatic progressive. But the second part of his victory speech laced into President Trump to attack diversity. Our since he says, there's no room for policies and rhetoric that tear people apart the end of the day long is stronger, then hey, and he says Democrats can show the way Juliet Papa ten ten wins at Democratic Party

"Robert Zimmerman and Betsy McCoy and main raw raw, I'll get it. Right. One of these times. Just a headline that you mentioned a little bit that we have a major upset major situation on Staten Island. And that's the Republican Dan Donovan in about as red area as you can get certainly around here. It's always going down, except it's an extraordinary victory metros. Of course. He's one of the many veterans who are running in the Democratic Party war. A decorated war veteran from Afghanistan served for her role in the battle was recognized for it and came back how to win the democratic primary to get the nomination. First time running for public office ran against Dan. Donovan who is a former elected official. Instead, I think he was the district. Attorney went on to congress and Dan Donovan faced a primary very tough primary from the former congressman who in fact went to jail, right? And and out of jail. I guess that's what he chose to try to regain a seat. Right. And now Donna then had to align themselves with Donald Trump and got Trump's endorsement Giuliani campaign for him because they were trying to trying to secure the right wing and it clearly as he played to Donald Trump in the private plate of the Trump support in the primary. It clearly heard him in the general election max rose came on strong here. At the end. Lot of TV commercial TV a lot of major street a lot of door to door canvassing, very very strong field operation, and it was quite I think he had a mainstream message, and I think Donovan was very much hurt by having to play to the Trump constituency in the democratic primary thing was a big Republican primary. I think that was a big factor. Also, you may not know this, but the largest population of Liberians outside of Liberia are in the north shore of Staten Island. I did not know that. That's why I'm here. And of course, there are several other races in New York that we haven't called yet. But John Paso in Hudson valley. Claudia Tenney upstate a little more and Chris Collins over in buffalo. So there are quite a few seats of Chris Collins who's under indictment. Yes, start Dibos. I would just say another one of the races that has been called as Alexander, okay? Zero Cortez in queens, and the young will be now the youngest elected youngest woman elected to congress enders. All I think twenty nine. I think so, but I think Robert you were talking about the importance of the strong ground operation for rose. And I think you you certainly see that at work in this race as well. And and the importance of that just reaching out to voters and candidates who were relatively unknown before this election cycle to go onto not just when they're nomination potentially win. The Cossio Cortez race was a bit difficult. She ran a primary a much smaller constituency to reach out to max rose is of course, in full blown general election to and so it was a different picture, right? The bottom line is that kind of field operation the personal connection with voters is so critical in every kind of political dynamic. What do you make of the fact that we have all these go ahead? Distinguishing feature of Okaz zero Cortez is not her age. It's the cheese in avowed socialist and the policies that she's advocating or pushing the Democratic Party to the far left. First of all, she's not even in office yet. Now, you're claiming and this is I think. These are the words that she got an office. And you're saying she's pushing the Democratic Party of the far left. This is the kind of rhetoric substance. Candidates all across the country. They she does it. She has a political philosophy. She's not a spokesperson for the Democrats in congress or the Democratic Party. And we have a broad tent. I disagree with many of her positions, especially towards Israel. But that's not the issue. The issue is she's part of a much larger mosaic that that comprises the Democratic Party. The fact that we don't have any results in from these all these congressional races in New York. It just speaks to the complete dysfunction. Would she saw today of the board of elections, and it's really very frustrating. We're still waiting for results from Nassau County. I mean, it's not that complicated. As as Cory Johnson said, it's not brain serve east end. We're waiting for all these numbers. And and the Suffolk board of elections is highly respected. But the city was just disgraceful today. Our guests Robert Zimmerman he is a member of the Democratic National Committee, Dr Betsy McCoy, former Lieutenant governor of the state of New York and New York Post columnist and Dr Meena boasts political science professor at Hofstra university. I'm Paul James along with Larry candor. So we have Democrats in the house and Republicans in the Senate much more to come. Early midterm election results were victory for President Trump candidates that have embraced the president embraced his policies, and that he's gone in and campaign for.

"Taxpayers for every one dollar you getting contributions this makes it an eight to one match. That's basically the simplest way that I can explain all right? And then I was talking about in New Jersey on that that ballot. There's only one ballot issue on that. I saw on my on my voters. Yeah. I'm pretty sure it's only one valley. In New Jersey only one ballot. We would suggest a vote. No, I stay with me on this. And then we'll talk about shelf Farley's coming in. And she's a she's doing a great run against Kristen gillibrand Senator who I don't know what happened in Kingston gentleman. She used to be I used to like thought she was so nice. And then she just, you know, just did not turn vicious and with the crazy progressive socialist stance. So you'll have you have an alternative in shell Farley in New York state and congressman Dan Donovan, I have to tell you to. I don't know how I said this before and and I guess, it's okay. We can say this. I like to say objectively because when I was taught broadcast radio television in Florida when I went to Jacksonville with the school, Dan, objectivity. So I'm being objective here. So you should vote for who you want. You know, what I'm telling you. I hope in these airwaves anybody. But how do you not vote for congressman, Dan? Donovan Dan Donovan has done a great job. This is the guy that sleeps in his cot when he. He goes down there. And he stays there with with a beautiful family. Great Representative of Staten Island Brooklyn cons. I do not over congressman Peter King watch what Peter King has done. Look what Peter King has done with the drug act. Helping out the firefighters the police officers prolonged poisoning fighting gang members who would've thought were gains would be gangs on Peter King is fighting against that this man has done so much lease Elton's another great guy. These are the guys that I come under very common sense. And I've told you this before that there's no ego in these gentlemen, there's no ego in this. They just had Leonard Lance my congressman in New Jersey. How do you not vote for him? Let's do the bipartisan isn't that? What you want? So as we will, you know, forgive me for me little chillier of these folks that are kind enough to come on this program, but they come on this program because they they really speak from the heart and the very ground in the very down to earth. And these are the folks that I think served New York New jersey, very very well. Speaking of which Bob. Beauty is gonna join us in this hour as well as the Republican candidate for US Senate going against Bob Menendez is there this is there has not been a Republican Senator in New Jersey for many years forty five years Clifford case. And so. Wow. Last for the past. So you can turn it around. But I you can never underestimate the power of the Hudson county. Democrats were Bob Menendez is from but Bob you from there as well. So maybe some of the Democrats will say look it's time we need a change in vote for mister Huguenin, the marine will be with us in this hour. Dr genie's knows coming up as well. Genie knows politics better than.

"I'll maybe I'd one more, and this is kind of been because against the grain Dan Donovan in New York is running for reelection. What's been a relatively safe district, Staten Island? But it's a moderate district. And if you remember Dan Donovan was one of the few who voted both against the healthcare Bill and the tax Bill, and for me, it's kind of a test of, you know, can someone who Republican this very kind of partisan time take his own, you know, essentially, call about his own independent path as be against these things that were the core of the Republican agenda, and also, you know, beat back a democratic democratic wave in a year that doesn't look so great so far he's up a belief four or five points at looks like, you know, he's he's he's got a slightly. But it's it's a very narrow local argument that he's been making its I voted against the health law because it wouldn't protect our hospitals. It's it's kind of a really interesting race. It's maybe but blow the radar and can someone was such a well crafted name illiterate alliterative, namely again. Donovan win an election something I'll be well. He's got an excellent Staten Island accent to the race will hinge on right? There will thinking of of litter people in power, Heidi Heitkamp, who's on this podcast. If you weeks ago is in the fight of her life after eking out victory six years ago in the North Dakota Senate race is trying to hold on in the face of Kevin Kramer, the Republican Representative and healthcare really has been closing argument that in that campaign. I spoke with Heitkamp's office about a week ago when they were putting out yet and other healthcare at and they said to me, look, we think this is our winning issue and everything else and some of the tariffs in the farming to which plays. Well, they're the trumps tariff moves and how that may have heard American farming, but they are really leaning in on healthcare because they see that as Paul was making the point the tangible issue that people can latch onto though, she never uses the words, affordable character ObamaCare. It's it's much more generic around protecting pre existing patients with pre existing conditions. Yeah. Mccaskill is another really good example of that where she's really leaning in hard on pre existing conditions, and she has the advance. Edge of her challenger, the attorney general being a party to that Texas lawsuit that I referenced earlier that's Claire mccaskill democrat Missouri running against Josh Hawley. The Republican attorney general there Adams talked about her covered some of that as well as the West Virginia case of mansion, Joe Manchin democrat running against an attorney general Morrissey who suing to get rid of the the I think the point you make is really scient- one. And this is true for I think mccaskill, and especially mansion is the pre existing condition issue and related the the lawsuit in Texas has given these candidates away to talk about the Affordable Care Act in these deep red states without having to say the name of the healthcare law have been a way to talk about health care without having to step on that that kind of ObamaCare, but let's go to the last question there. Hundreds and hundreds if not thousands of races counting state legislatures to be decided on Tuesday. What is the race that you are watching? Adam cancun. Well, I'll take a second. I guess to plug Ohio again because I think it's a really interesting state with a lot of political dynamics you have to remember this is a state that went twice for Obama. And then voted for Trump in two thousand sixteen in kind of an indicator of of the election that we saw. And that's a neck and neck race between Richard cordray, who's a democrat. He's a former CFP had in the Obama administration super financial protection. Exactly. And he's running against Mike dewine who is the current attorney general Republican attorney general and this is again a race. That's become very much about healthcare. It is who will protect the characte and pre existing conditions and also who will fight the opioid epidemic that you know, regardless of national trends continues to spiral in Ohio..

"Not being able to get flowers made for their wedding and consistent with the cake shop case the court sent it away they sent it back they said take it back to your local courts and ask them to rule consistent with our ruling this term and cake shop but i say to you that we will be back on cases like cake shop because they didn't issue a big constitutional ruling in that case they just issued a procedural throw you a curveball here you always do that we didn't this would be one of the topics but in the news as you may have seen this weekend was that restaurant in lexington virginia where they asked sarah huckabee sanders to leave because the owner of the restaurant pulled the staff and she and they felt that you know sarah huckabee sanders does things in her present job that so violate their sense of what's moral that they didn't want to serve her and one of the things i thought was well what's the legal comparison there to this cake shop where the the baker felt that gay marriage violated his moral principle it's a great question brian do you want my personal opinion in my legal analysis well here's the legal analysis in order to make a constitutional claim about denial of service you have to be the member of a suspect class and the greatest suspect class in our country is race other suspect classes include a gender now the court is considering sexual orientation that's what cake shop would be about and of course the gay marriage case was all about that working for the trump administration or any political entity is not and has never been recognized as a suspect class should you beat died service because you work for a particular administration will that then becomes a political oh that's separate but i just don't think sarah huckabee sanders is taken that case all the way to the us supreme court jamie floyd thank you so much other stories we are watching a coalition of civil rights religious and union activists opposed to the president's immigration policies gearing up for a protest in nevada outside of a school safety conference where us attorney general jeff sessions keynote speaker several of the protesters gathering for the rally outside of a hotel casino say they will engage in civil disobedience new jersey senator corey booker says he's seen migrants at the southern border being turned away booker is in texas he spent last night crossing the border from mexico into the us to observe the process and he says officers at the border are actively pushing people away without allowing them to present themselves for asylum the customs and border patrol officers are readily admitted to me that that's what they do they claimed it was based upon whether there was room in detention facilities for those families senator booker spoke to npr this morning he says some advocates claim border patrol officers are turning people away to encourage illegal crossings thereby justifying treating migrants as criminals new york state's federal primary elections are tomorrow where voters will choose which house and senate candidates will appear on november ballots in new york's eleventh district which includes staten island and a slim part of brooklyn the incumbent republican representative dan donovan is being challenged by his predecessor michael grimm and wnyc's john o'connor says unlike many other districts in the state that race has been all about which candidate is most like president trump donovan got endorsement from the president but grim argues he'll be the better ally in the house he points out the donovan voted against several bills the president supported including the tax cut the obamacare repeal and a bill penalising socalled sanctuary cities for immigrants donovan says he's voting in the interest of his constituents and for more details on tomorrow's elections we have our voters guide at wnyc dot org governor cuomo says he doubts republicans in the state senate will renew a law enabling almost one hundred fifty speed cameras in the city school zones to keep working the legislature ended its session without extending the law for speed cameras democrats want it but didn't have enough republican votes cuomo didn't say what he would do to help buddies warning republicans that they'll pay at the ballot box if they don't act soon i think it would be a terrible disservice and i think the voters will let them know november if they don't do mayor de blasio and transit advocates held rally yesterday to call for an extension and an expansion of the speed camera program saying the senate should act before the.

"The two thousand eighteen midterm elections was shaping up as a pitched battle between democrats and republicans for control of congress and there's one district in new york city where national politics are playing out in ways large and small an islet has always been the outlying or in city politics more suburban then urban and more conservative than the rest of the city but this year just about every national political issue is converging in the race for the island's 11th congressional district wnyc's washington correspondent john o'connor reports i guess roxanne claudio has lived her whole life on staten island raising two kids working and retiring from a job as legal secretary in manhattan she's ready to move on so she waited her turn at a recent town hall hosted by her republican congressman dan donovan she wanted to know how the republican tax bill then taking shape in congress would affect her plans unlikely that halo obviously this what i have trouble attracting buyers because they're all the he deductible donovan said he's worried to the elimination of those things may result good tass people that i work is that's why i voted 'no claudio usually votes republican in fact she wants to relocate to a more conservative state or taxes aren't as hi but she says the national divide between red and blue states has also divided her westerly neighborhood especially since donald trump's election and it's getting our source people can talk to each other anymore he put the lennick year they don't wanna listen new york's eleven congressional district is the only how seat in the city held by a republican it's the kind of district both national parties think they have a shot to win as they vied for control of the house the district includes all of staten island in a piece of brooklyn there's three registered democrats for every two republicans but the gop as controlled the seat for all but two years since 1980 just about every national political issue and trend is at play in the race taxes analysts find that staten island residents like claudio are more likely to get hit with a tax hike under the new law than residents of other states healthcare under pressure from voters in the healthcare industry donovan bucked his party and voted against repeal immigration opioid crisis the trump resistance check check had checked south brooklyn at work gerrymandered guy porton scott considers herself part of that resistance she lives in the other end.

"And property taxes in our area well we know that the average deduction and new work state is eighty seven hundred dollars in its lower than that of new york city so it's mostly the high end homes were homeowners will lose out i checked a couple counties in new jersey in essex county for instance the average deduction is twelve thousand dollars and it's very close to that bergen too so those homeowners will lose out under this plan new jersey republican tomic arthur says he's on board with the idea of a cap on the deduction except he says it should be higher a lot of things i like in the brawl so if we can get the right number for property tax deductibility than i think we have seen but that capped ten thousand dollars is twice the average deduction nationwide and that's why one oversight gop votes like representative chris collins from western new york long island's peter king is unhappy either he says it's common for people in his district to deduct twenty five thousand dollars in state and local property in income taxes so those state and local income taxes are those still deductible no jamie nabil would eliminate that and that's bad news for new york city residents they paid both state and local income taxes in that has staten island republican dan donovan's attention new york city off property tax isn't very high bomb but uh income taxes so you insects warm ports new york city residents that's one reason why republican leaders are not promising that middleclass families won't pay more the author of big common deduction is for mortgage entrance to any changes there yet the bill would put a five hundred thousand dollar cap on mortgage interest deduction existing mortgages would be exempt but for home sales going forward you could only right off the interest on up to five hundred thousand dollars a principle that's a.
