"Army National Guard stays to have a complete cyber protection team so we're right at the front of the pack against her we are we are yes there's cyber units now within the ninety first cyber brigade is our parent brigade they're out in Virginia and there are thirty eight states now that have parts of the the cyber brigade as part of them and actually the battalion that I report to was just announced this week to be stationed in Indiana so we'll have a good time headquarters and then to cyber companies as well as cyber security company in a cyber war for company it's really inevitable the Jeff take more more precautions today isn't it is yeah vigilance is a is definitely something that you have to look out for and you only have to make one mistake in in you can compromise an entire entire network so it's kind of sad to think there might be hackers out there are people out there that want to vote for our ability to do our jobs particularly in the military but they're there and you have to protect against them is over at the it looks like we're at the leading edge of a fighting that often that so it looks to me and sounds to me like a job that you're never going to finish it's going to be there from now on yeah I would have to say you're correct there yeah one of the things that that I tell people is you know nobody's gotten worse at this activity right so the more people get practice the more the technology speeds up you know the better people are going to get at the San and it for a lot of people in town outside of the military it's it's pretty lucrative from a criminal perspective in unfortunately you can make a lot of money in in cyber crime but so you can also get caught so then we have to stay ahead of it so colonel we've heard over land nine years that the Minnesota National Guard it's all about training training training until you get to the deployment then you get to use all of training so that the deployment goes well and we also heard that we have exercises like we're just said some people down in Texas for the first for good comic team we have warfighter got coming up we got the national training center are the bad guys in those simulations gonna do everything they can to to break through and cause you headaches and cyber protection well probably not everything that they could do it's got to be worth while training right so you have with the the point of those warfighter exercises and is is to get you to a breaking point to you to really focus on where you need to refocus your training so you understand what might happen and how to prevent it from happening right so yeah our team is really set up well to to train ourselves in a lot of things because we do have you know when they call red teams in blue teams right and then you have the red team is trained in penetration testing think like the like the enemy and the blue team is third response to what the red team does so they work together and say Hey this is you know the technique that I used to get into the system you know what can we do to try to patch those holes or work yeah catch activity if there isn't a a patch for it when what logs can we look at your what systems can we put in the middle that that might help catch what the bad guys are doing so Sir I'm I'm sure that there's a a system for passing along to all units throughout the guard and throughout the army what they've seen happen in the past in the actions we take to protect that then you can you can work with those scenarios and make sure that you're ready for yeah there's there's repositories out there a lot of them are are more on the high side systems just based on you know how we're able to find things and then again what the the technique would be to to catch it and in response to it you know we don't necessarily want that information going out to the public all the time course that Sir but I'm sure you're you're you're concerned with protecting your weapon systems protect here communications of being able to to not be handicapped when you're out in the field of exercise remission or deployment in the more you can practice and train the better able you're gonna be able to execute your mission when you get there yeah and a lot of what we do from a training perspective happens in in virtual environments so you know we'll take copies of of platforms put it in a virtual environment and see how we can go about yeah both attacking and protecting the system so that when we're on mission or yeah in the field it's not gonna be the first time that we see a lot of things that they get thrown at us lieutenant colonel Dan Cunningham from the one seventy seven cyber protection team as well as the national guard on Minnesota military radio Sir they think it's one thing to deal with the situation that happened in the past and into train forum what about what's going to happen tomorrow how do you figure out what the bad guys might do tomorrow how do you how do you prepare for something that you haven't seen before you got to try to think like the bad guy so yeah we try to DO table top exercises we use our Intel analysts to really be the the bad guy in situations and just like the infantry does when they're planning a mission you know you've got you've got your Intel folks that come up with any situation and you know they want to win just as much as we do so they'll come up with some pretty crazy ideas of of where you know they can try to enter something and and and where they can crawl into ten networks or systems after that so yes some of the times it can get scary with what they come up with so it's a it's usually a fun exercise when when working with those folks but all it puts you in a position where if something does happen you're better prepared to react to it and fend off Sir this is a new unit if you still got some some spaces to fill you're still looking for some from spots to fill was some ID peoples from cyber production folks yeah we we actually just filled one more intelligence analyst position today so that brings our total vacancies down ten nine most of those are going to be warrant officers but I do also still have a couple of network defender enlisted you six positions as well owner previous discussions sounds like you found some folks within the Minnesota National Guard that might want to change their military operational specialty from something to come over and join you that might be more in line with our civilian occupation but you can also reach out to active duty army and in the other forces of marines of navy Air Force and try to find people that can fill slots yeah we have one special sergeant right now well actually one officer candidate who came to us from the Air National Guard he was a forklift driver but does IT security for eco lab he when he joined the unit he had to take a reduction in rank unfortunately went off to nine weeks of army basic training fun he actually did say he enjoyed it so you know yeah I know it's probably a lot different from when I went through back in ninety seven but I I had a great time in there too but having to go through multiple iterations of it might not have been as much fun but then once he got back from basic training he went off and went to one officer candidate school and now he's awaiting going off to a twenty week school to become qualified as a cyber operations technician so one of our listeners wants to join your cyber protection team what do they do well they can certainly call up their international card recruiters and we can work on getting them the information information they need to fill out a packet we have a board process for for people that join the team there's a questionnaire and then seven ministry of things that need to come along with it but now I'm also free to take emails account can give people out my email address if they want it I don't think it's it's private so Sir I think everybody in our listening audience knows where to find Army National Guard recruiter then I suggest that's the place to start in if anybody's already in the service no matter what branch and you want to transfer to a great outfit they can always apply to transfer the Minnesota Army National Guards cyber protection team a kernel we got about thirty seconds left any final thoughts for our listeners just to try to place a fine your networks you know watch what you're clicking on if you can security is important and there's a lot more computers out in the end what we call the wild than there are and the defense networks or corporate networks so those those home computers are often used as attack vectors for the the other closed off network so so be aware and be careful correct colonel like to thank you for joining us today thanks Tom lieutenant.

"Defend information networks through vulnerability assessments penetration tests and discovery and other counter infiltration scenarios at both the federal state level and joining us today to talk about the missile national herds cyber awareness is lieutenant colonel Daniel Cunningham colonel welcome missile military radio thanks Tom Sir can you tell me how long you been in the military actually twenty two and a half years today today yeah well nice anniversary is already made a loyal lieutenant colonel congradulations Sir thank you thank you can you tell us a little bit about your career it's brought you to a few places and now we're talking a few minutes of us standing up a new team sure the I. listed and nineteen ninety seven started off my career and communication security working with encryption for for the tech Gradius went off to officer candidate school in two thousand two and as soon as I got back from my officer basic course I was shipped off to Bosnia as part of security forces fourteen with a two one three six a bit of a more head and was there was there anybody thinking about cyber protection back then I don't know if it was terms cyber but my role on that mobilization was actually information assurance and security officer so protecting communications and things like that correct making sure people have the right user accounts and we're doing the right things on the networks so twenty two years somebody deployments of you gonna I've been on three deployments did that Bosnia deployment and then went on the Iraq deployment that first brigade did back in two thousand five to two thousand seven and then again with thirty fourth infantry division from two thousand nine to two thousand ten so you've been in hard at it with a lot of deployment so a lot of different jobs yeah and actually since then I've been able to go to Germany and Japan and Estonia actually Germany twice now so yes Sir I understand that earlier this year the Minnesota National Guard remembers before that decided to stand up a new team called the cyber protection team how did you end up getting in charge of that duty well a lot of it had to do with the people that were making the decisions I happen to know a lot of them and had a lot of respect from them and for them and we were talking earlier about colonel Fassbender and general **** bath and another person would be we tackle Nate shelling who has been a peer of mine for a long time really proud of where he's kind of his career just and then them knowing the background that I have from the military side and from the civilian sector my work with three M. and and previous companies knowing those people in them knowing what I was capable of they decided to have maybe later so colonel like in the civilian population ten years ago I don't think too many people worried about cyber protection but you can I grew up with that things change the internet came along with a complete rector communications with the protector ability to fire weapons with a project in I would guess every year there was a little more to worry about a little more to worry about it you've got to this point our we we really have to pay attention sure yes you know looking at the way that vulnerabilities and and the risk for our systems have developed into it it's more our dependencies on the technological aspects of of service and and industry right you know the more we depend on it the more vulnerable we are too not having that available to us lieutenant colonel Dan Cunningham for the Minnesota National Guards one seventy seven cyber protection team on Minnesota military radio so Sir when you set up this team can you tell us what was the what was the mission what was the one thing that you wanted to pay attention to most other than finding people with some experience that could come in and help well that's actually one of the better parts of it because in order to be qualified in the field to be able to go on mobilizations and and you know respond to emergencies on the state side yeah it's more important to find people that have the skill set or that are able to learn the skill set verses what their specific military occupational specialty or of what their job is in the military so now on my team we've got tankers we've got infantry finance mechanics so selecting the right people has been the biggest part of the job and then making sure that I can get them off to the training that they need to be qualified in the roles sure we've had reports over the last nine years of doing this show that when we deploy our Minnesota National Guard men and women overseas on a mission they not only bring their MOS their military occupational specialty but they bring their civilian talents as well and I'm guessing that some of these tankers and lift truck operators and so forth in their civilian jobs they were involved in some type of cyber some type of internet and and that's the beauty of the Minnesota National Guard you get more than just one specialty that the tree have experience as well absolutely so yeah we've got people that work in Minnesota cyber that you know work for tiger target doing now our reverse engineering we've got is to respond is at target and eco lab and three and were all over the place and you know those those companies don't necessarily want you to sit in one spot for ever and ever you know they want you to move around and get other experiences because the more experiences you have you know the easier it will be for you to be able to find and and protect things on the on the network so colonel Leasure putting gathers steam are there is there educational opportunities are opportunities for your team to go in and learn more as part of the Minnesota National Guard as they become members of the survivor production team absolutely right now we actually have approximately eighteen weeks of training that people have to go to to meet qualification requirements outside of what they're actual military job will be there's a cyber common technical core it's a ten week long where you get really in depth into in a windows and Lennix and networking and security as a whole and then as you mentioned you've got the cyber threat emulation and discovery and counter infiltration type missions and mission protection you know those each have their own multi week courses to go to as well to really hone in the skills that are needed for those teams so colonel we've had the support of the employers border the guard and reserves strong in Minnesota and our civilian employers are very good about dealing with deployments going back to two thousand one I'm guessing of I'm a civilian employer and I've got somebody in a in a ninety position if they have an opportunity to join your team and even though it means they're going to be away from the job for some period of time you're gonna get some education they're gonna get some knowledge that could they could bring back to those businesses to help the businesses absolutely in addition to those classes we also there's baseline certification requirements so we have people going to sands courses which are arrayed around with the examination to become certified is about seventy three hundred dollars a piece as well as county I sack a you know CISM certified in information security manager and certified information security so there's a little bit of pain for those civilian employers but they get it back in spades because they they give employee back that knows much much more right and then there's also a lot of online resources that we have available that industry would have to pay for otherwise it was really great partnership between the civilian employers in the in the Minnesota National Guard all working together to try to protect business and protector military assets as well correct colonel after a short break we come back we're gonna talk a little bit more about missile National Guard's new cyber protection team please stay with us this is Minnesota military radio you're listening to Minnesota military radio on Twin Cities news talk A. M. eleven thirty you know my mom's going to have a baby let the above yeah girl we heard the heartbeat and my dad said this is gonna be seven so president well probably need Dan said I hello my name is Mary Ann Kerr ski I'm the director prolific us America we know that every baby is a miracle and has the potential to do great things if you know someone who is pregnant or in.

"Ninety. Cotton top waited on the edge of his cot. He was told that his mother would soon be arriving to visit him. He wanted to see her one last time to hear her promise that she would not be present for the hanging. No mother should have to see that. As he waited. He couldn't stop a flicker of hope from consuming his thoughts. There was still time for rescue. Maybe his family would storm the jail and break him out. There were rumors that cap Hatfield might be planning such a scheme thinking about cap made cotton top feel angry. He was the real culprit. They were both guilty of shooting up the McCoy's farm house, but it was caps bullet that it struck the McCoy girl, Allah fair contact felt sure of it. Cotton top could hear a crowd beginning to form outside spectators for the hanging, but nobody came to break down the jail doors and set him free contacts hope curdled into despair he had wasted. So much of the last few years hating McCoy's, but he didn't feel any hate. Now. They weren't responsible for him being here. It was his own kin the half fields who had pushed him to violence. Cotton top at unleashed his worst impulses for the sake of his family. Now, his family had abandoned him witnesses on February eighteenth send that just before the executioners covered his face with a black hood cotton top cried out the hatfields made me do it. An estimated seven thousand people came to see the hanging including Randolph McCoy afterwards. Tensions. Seem to settle contact wasn't the only guilty party, but many tug fork residents just seemed happy that someone anyone had paid for the havoc the feud caused the violence sedate had cost the Hatfield seven lives, and the mccoys ten now the families were no longer out for blood most of the remaining mccoys moved away from tug fork settling permanently in pike Ville, Kentucky Sarah Randolph for too heartbroken to think of vengeance. They have lost their sons Tolbert farmer and bud in the pom-pom murders of eighteen eighty two their son Calvin and their daughter alla fair died in the New Year's massacre of eighteen eighty eight. Roseanna McCoy had been cast out by her family in eighteen eighty after her fair with John Hatfield, but she had restored ties after the New Year's massacre to take care of her injured mother, even after reuniting with her family Rosanna suffered from severe depression in the spring of eighteen eighty nine her family reported that she seemed to be wasting away one night twenty nine year old Rosanna went to bed and never woke up her close friend and sister-in-law Martha McCoy would later say she died of a broken heart Roseanne is younger brother Bill had suffered from unbearable guilt ever since the Popol murders. Bill along with his brothers farmer and Tolbert had taken part in the stabbing of Ellison Hatfield, but when the Hatfield mob came to settle the score. They had taken bud McCoy instead of Bill Bill carried the responsible. Ability of his brother's death on his conscience for years in October eighteen eighty nine at the age of twenty three he fell ill and died Randolph McCoy remained bitter for the rest of his life. But he felt it best that the feud come to an end before could claim any more lives, the Hatfield suffered fewer losses, but came to the same conclusion on February twenty fourth 1891 Twenty-seven-year-old cap Hatfield sent a letter to the editor published in the Wayne County news in this letter cap wrote the war spirit in me has abated and I sincerely rejoice at the prospect of peace. I have devoted my life to arms we have undergone a fearful loss of noble lives and valuable property in the struggle now, I propose to rest in a spirit of peace caps at a to'real didn't mention the fact that he was still wanted for murder in Kentucky. He also oversold his purported spirit of peace in eighteen ninety six cap was arrested after a shoot-out unrelated to the mccoys and convicted of manslaughter the crime carried only a one year sentence, which cap served in a small county jail in Williamson West Virginia. He was worried that if he stayed in custody he might be extradited to Kentucky so three months into his sentence campus gift from the jail using a drill that his wife managed to sneak in my most accounts, he fled to Oklahoma his spirit did eventually settle in his time away. He attended law school after a decade cap returned to West Virginia to start a legal practice. Capsule, their brother, John also carved out a new life for himself after the feud his hell cat life Nancy McCoy Hatfield divorced him. She in fact, left him for bad Frank Phillips, but Jones he remarried and started a logging business. His rule in the feud seemed to be in the distant past, however, a US marshal named Dan Cunningham was still interested in collecting the five hundred dollar rewards for the capture of any indicted hatfields in June of eighteen ninety nine Cunningham nab Johnny in the town of Gilbert. West Virginia and escorted him to Kentucky for trial Johnson was found guilty and he received a life sentence. But six years into the sentence, another inmate attack the warden of the prison jonky fought the other inmate off and as a reward he was granted parole. Unlike his sons devil Anse never saw. The inside of a jail. He kept up his quiet life in the mountains in nineteen eleven seventy two year old devil. Anse sent a message to Randolph. Mccoy's oldest son Jim Deva Lance offered. Jim a sum of ten thousand dollars and asked whether the indictment against him could be withdrawn Jim McCoy refused the offer. But sent back message telling devil Anse that he had let go of all resentments, and he did not consider the hatfields to be a target any longer even as the Hatfield McCoy families moved on from the feud the story has become immortalized as an American legend. It may be that people see their own grudges and passions echoed in the conflict. Psychologists, Michael McCulloch, Robert curse. Ben and Benjamin. Toback have suggested that revenge is a universal and necessary human add obtain often, but their work also states that the capacity for forgiveness is just as inherent to the human. Experience the final peaceful outcome of the Hatfield McCoy feud seemed to prove their points. Thanks

"That is the one notable bit of trivia about this movie is bed. They offered the role of Bentley Kelsey grammar. I oh, really? And he turned it down Niles taken over the school. Aisles a hacker. All right. Well, I've tried tried my best Seattle, I guess I'll go to California to be a security expert. Oh, what fires. We'll never have to buy Sherry again. There's Kartheiser. He's running around the baseball bed. He's kind of like upping the game here. He breaks into a room where the pigeon lady and a couple of other teachers are having with all these kids. Yes. And he's like, oh, you know. What an Oscar, Joe. Ladies. Malone to escape from New York. She was the woman who played the vision lady in home alone. Do I believe in that movie into the left? We're told that. Doesn't the pigeon lady like live in the attic of Carnegie Hall. There are parliament's up there read about there are like rent controlled since nineteen. Dan Cunningham live. That's the thing in the Bill Cunningham documentary. He gets fucking forced out of that makes total sense. Yeah. So now they're just like rich motherfuckers instead of like working artisan legends, like Bill Cunningham, getting live in them and sustain meager life as as it's like New York, real estate's Luca RAB. Say, don't know. But it sounds like that the pigeon lady has some like action around here too. She's kicking all kind of actually. Yes, she's not a fucking those birds. Bird baby. Fucking lame, negative part. I saw the pigeon lady must have smelled like shit. Oh my God. Are you kidding? Right? Here's the problem. The biggest problem with that movie. Why is she not covered head to toe and. Well, I mean, feces dries. Khaindrava spectrum, Brenda fraker fraker a fricken. I linger. This benefactor. Do you think she gained respect for pigeons whilst filming that movie her laws Drancy lost? Yes. And I mean, Kevin might be on to something like stuff dries..

Would you know this idea keeping, of some teams trying to say if you get suspended for helmet like Russia rose Smith yeah. Red Guan Smith that he gets suspended because. You hit somebody with his helmet and they want to take that out of his. Money that's preposterous that's one of the dumbest things I've ever seen I think it's gonna be fun because Texas will be going. Against Sam darnold Baker Mayfield Josh Allen Ali those the, top they won't be going against Josh Rosen because they don't play Arizona right we're We're going to see a lot of those hot Jato yeah, the holdup, was offset language well?
