Bloomberg sports update I'm Tom Rogers I'm Barry revolts You're listening to masters and business on Bloomberg radio My extra special guest this week is John dor He is a partner at kleiner Perkins the famed venture capital fund that is known for investing in such companies as Amazon Google Twitter et cetera He has a new book titled speed and scale and action plan for solving our climate crisis now So there was just a new report that came out It said renewable energy in the U.S. has quadrupled over the past decade so we're all good right There's nothing else to worry about with the climate I wish that was true No I came to this book this project This passion back in 2006 when Al Gore's movie you remember an inconvenient truth Sure And I took my family and friends to see it We came back for a dinner conversation And went around the table to see what people thought When it came turn for my 16 year old daughter Mary doer she said I'm scared and I'm angry Dad your generation created this problem You better fix it And I was speechless I had no idea what to say So I set out with partners of mine at kleiner Perkins to understand the extent of the climate crisis even higher Al Gore as a partner And over time over three funds invested a third up to a half of the funds total about $1 billion in some 70 climate ventures Most of which failed And in fact it's hard It's very hard to grow a climate tech or green tech venture It was pretty lonely in the early days of doing that And we almost lost all of our investments But we stood by these entrepreneurs and they produced companies like beyond meat or end phase or the next smart thermostats and today are worth some $3 billion But that was then this is now I think what's important about now is we need way greater ambition and speed to avert catastrophic irreversible climate crisis I mean the evidence is all around us We've got devastating hurricanes and floods and wildfires And 10 million climate refugees the IPCC says that if we don't reduce our carbon emissions by 2030 by 50 55% we will see global warming overshoot by more than 2°C nearly 4°F And the Paris accords which were agreed to in 2015 if we were achieving them would still cause us to land at around 2°C The bad news is we're not close to achieving any of those goals You talk in the book about cutting emissions in half by 2030 and net zero by 2050 and you reference 6 main areas of attack transportation the electrical grid food protecting nature cleaning up industry and then removing carbon from the atmosphere We were talking about Tesla How quickly do we think that we're going to be past internal combustion engines with a fully electrified transportation network Well that's a great question And we can I want to put this in context Every year we dump 59 gigatons of carbon greenhouse gas and emissions In the atmosphere as if it's some kind of free and open sewer And so the book and the research behind it has built a plan in electrifying transportation and the other 5 for which each of the objectives has three to 5 key results These are Andy grove Intel style very measurable specific steps In transportation it says.

magazine plus global business finance and tech news as it happens Bloomberg business week with Carol met here and Bloomberg quick takes Tim Sten on Bloomberg radio Hi everyone Welcome to the weekend edition of Bloomberg businessweek It was a volatile week for markets Thanks in large part to uncertainty over the emergence of a new COVID-19 variant omicron which we're still trying to figure out how to pronounce I think I figured out I talked to our Greek colleague here She told me we got it Yes we're laying off a pulu Also Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell taking a hawkish tone before Congress vowing to keep inflation in check And saying Carol that fed officials should consider tapering asset purchases even faster than anticipated setting a stage for potential interest rate hikes next year but as you always remind me interest rates are low We need perspective everyone Exactly The other thing is and this caught our attention he said it's time to retire the word transitory when it comes to rising prices Trend we are seeing in nearly every sector of our economy And several of our guests on this program have plenty to say about that Tim We're coming up in this broadcast We're going to hear from a pair of ecommerce experts from different sides of the aisle Shopify president Harley finkelstein tells us how his company is outpacing the broader retail sector with the holiday shopping season already underway And talk about timing Wall Street Journal tech columnist Christopher mims He's got a new book out about exactly how we get all of the stuff that we have and why the global retail industry is at a tipping point Plus the Bloomberg 50 is back It's our annual look at the people and ideas that defined global business entertainment finance politics science and technology in 2021 I love this list All of that to come we begin with a story in this week's economics section supply chain carnage creating opportunities yes opportunities for companies willing to take a chance on random goods From cheese to used cars and maybe even pumpkin seeds think of it as storage wars on steroids Bloomberg business we contributor Jeff wise wrote the story and he joined us along with the editor of the magazine Joel Weber Jeff tells us his piece came from his coverage of the ever given That of course was the monster cargo ship that clogged up the Suez Canal back in March Nobody really knew what was on that ship There were something like 20,000 containers and there were various reports like it had been reported that there was a life size Tyrannosaurus Rex that was heading for mini golf course in England But next little details like that but nobody really knew what the bulk of it was and there was this young guy in the UK who was more talkative than most of these salvage buyers And he kind of became sort of instant media star over in the UK He was on the local news and everything talking about what he had taken about 20 containers off the ship and was trying to figure out what to do with it He had actually ten containers I think 25 200 tons or something of raw cabbage that had been picked by farmers in China putting these containers and was destined for Europe And then of course it was stuck for four months So it was kimchi The heat Inadvertently Liquefied And it turns to goop And so this is a guy who became the centerpiece of my article for business week He can both turn around stuff that has some value left in it Or he can take stuff that's absolutely toxic or dangerous or whatever it has to be disposed of So he can whatever it is he kind of uses his cleverness in his connections to find out the best thing to do with it And how is it that in 2021 that these could be mystery boxes Don't the companies that transport these containers know exactly what's in every container For the most part yes Can each container has a manifest and it sealed and so it's not supposed to be any tampering but there's shenanigans that go on And sometimes the manifest is vague in the case of the one that I wrote about in the story It just said household goods bracket car And what that meant was anybody's guess What value do you assign to that It's like a complete random gas But he was telling me sometimes this was in the article but there's a trade where people basically because you cost money to dispose of stuff especially dangerous stuff So what they'll sometimes do is they'll bundle up correctly say plastic recycling in the front of a container And then behind that it's like either just junk or garbage or something hazardous And then you ship it to Asia or Africa And then effectively you're disposing of it The same day I was there He showed me the car He had a load of tires that had been illegally shipped off and had been sent back And so he was going to dispose of that So I understand why someone might not claim 20 containers full of what was formerly known as cabbage But why would something like that car not get claimed How frequently did stuff just not get claimed at the port He is not a detective His job is just to figure out what to do with this stuff and he like the quicker he can do it the better So yes my instinct is the same as yours I'm like how do you but that's not his approach So he doesn't know He has no idea what happens This guy could have died He could have just looked at the storage charges and been I don't want to deal with this anymore But this is a real problem The containers sit there and whatever's in it is not gaining any value And the costs are mounting I actually wound up I was over in the UK doing a couple of stories And I wind up sharing a cab with a woman whose son was in the furniture importation business And she was telling me he was.

"To be made that it should be wrist aligning none. I don't care if you love him as a player don't care at all. That's not the argument. The argument is he's an expiring asset. Morgan is not Which one you want to lose for nothing. Because If you expose bargain, you're probably gonna lose both for nothing. You exposed crystalline in your nose or Soraya wrist, aligning for nothing. You trade him. You trade rest, aligning you don't lose either one for nothing. How How are we not talking about this more? That it's finally going to happen in the next month and a half. He's going to be traded. How could he not be? It would blow my mind. If he's still on this roster the day of the expansion draft, it would be insane. If that happens, insane if that happens. And here come the Devils. Who might have interest at least it's reported. It's rumored that the Devils have interest And they are a team. That, like the Sabres is pretty bad. And they are a team and this is why I think Would be optimistic about what you could get in a return for wrist alignment from New Jersey. They're not a team with these high level defenseman. They're not bringing wrist aligned and in, I think to serve the role that he should play on a second pair protected minutes. Protected teammate. I don't think they're bringing him in for that. Cause. Where does he go in their lineup if he if he's on the devil's opening night? Where do you slot him? Because There are other guys are P. K. Subban, who was a shell of himself after having hip surgery a couple years ago, has never returned to form. Ryan Murray. Left shot defenseman anyway and I mean, he's okay at this point his career, but not that good. Damon Severson. Will butcher Connor Carrick. I got news for you. We're still line is a top pair defenseman on the New Jersey Devils. Just by default. And what do the devil's pay for that if that's what they view him as because that's their fix, right? If they're trading for wrist align, and are they? Are they making another big swing on a defenseman? Not going for Dougie Hamilton if they do that, who is also a right shot defenseman. That's their big move. And that's that's got me excited. Because a team that values him like that. That could be Man. What do I got started looking at. I don't think you can get their first round pick. It's too high. Isn't it like fifth or sixth? Let me look real quick. The Devil's pick is fourth. You get the fourth pick. You're definitely not getting the fourth pick, but Go grab their top prospect. Go grab Future first, maybe a second in their second best prospect. I don't There's a lot of different packages I think you could bring in from New Jersey that would be really enticing. Yes, for brat who has been a very undervalued player in the league since he entered 20 still 22 years old, got a cheap contract at $2.75 million. That plus a pick somewhere in the in the second round range. The wrist of line and trade is going to happen, whether you like it or not. And if the Devils want, um Come get him, please.
