That's the question that a lot of out of work Californians are asking after the state's employment Development Department suspended checks to thousands of claimants as KCBS is Matt Bigler reports the agency is trying to root out rampant fraud. It's estimated that hundreds of thousands of people on unemployment had those checks suspended on December 30. First. Daniella Urban, executive director of the Center for Workers, Right, says it's a huge blow to folks who have lost their jobs during the pandemic that they've already drawn down their savings and are living on these benefits checked check. So any delay in payment result in their inability to meet basic needs. The Employment Development Department suspended claims that may be tied to fraudulent activity. What may add up to an estimated $2 billion Michael Bernick, an attorney with the law firm Duane Morris and former E D d director says the agency has always had tradeoffs between delivering benefits and combating fraud. The D D d did nothing they'd be attacked for not addressing this big issue of fraud. On the other hand, people are desperate ped details KCBS. It is working around the clock to ensure valid claimants have access to the benefits they've earned while also protecting the integrity of the program. Matt Bigler KCBS, a 31 year old man accused of stealing a Leamer from the San Francisco Zoo last year, has been ordered released from custody but told to stay away from the zoo. Corey McGill Away, made his first court appearance earlier today. He was arrested last October for the theft of Maki, the Leamer 21 year old male Limmer was discovered missing in October. A day later, Maki was sports. Spotted by a kindergartner at a school in Daly City. The animal was in good health. Judge ordered McGill away to follow probation terms he received in a separate cases. Specifically in our communities and there are. There are a lot of Asian Americans who work at the Post Office The post office connects us are far-flung relatives and friends, and in general we just thought it was time to give a little shine to this institution that. Is taking a few bumps, these days, and so we actually found. A postal. Service employees who was. Happy to talk to us about this profession and about the stories and. And, saw their openings locally and swint for and they ask for references. Internal references and. Plugged in some family members names, and I was pretty much and within twenty four hours. In the family. It's a family business. It really is. Yeah. How many of your other family members worked for the postal service that are alive to? But. But it's it's been like kind of multigenerational thing or it has absolutely. Is there. Is there something about the post office or the Postal Service that has been? particularly. Peeling I'm guessing in some ways it's because it's eighth always there be. It. You know like they're always jobs in the postal. I. I just Kinda remember Hollywood shuffle under if you've seen that movie Robert Townsend movie. where? Kind of what you're saying is one of the themes in the movie that. His family's like A. Get A job. The Postal Service it's it's you know it's it's a secure job. You know it's comfortable. It's something which you can rely on and Robert Townsend characters like I wanna be a star in Hollywood but you know as a black actor in Hollywood. You gotta deal with a whole lot of bullshit and movies about the bullshit and. Kind of like you know no spoilers or yes boilers. Movement. You haven't seen it. You should see it but. For my grandfather. I believe he went in right after he was discharged from the military e- so he. He had served in the Cold War came back They relocated to Daly City from Dallas. and. I think he that's it hired pretty much on the spot. And it's still the case to this day So he he was there until I moved up here. And two, hundred five. I remember him getting village. One Am and coming home. And afternoon. He. Yeah it's interesting my Uncle Sam deal with him in Minneapolis. He got out of the Air Force and became a carrier pretty much immediately. And my uncle Kennedy in. Hawaii. I think he started in Minneapolis, but then transferred to Hawaii, which is apparently. The most requested transfer. Why And he's been a mechanic for. Sixty years. He's he's been there for a long time I. Think he's been here the longest. Everyone fixing like postal trucks, postal trucks, the machinery he's he's really handy guy i. mean he used to build birdhouses? Similar skills I guess.

"The Daly city station. This passenger spoke with KPI x five can be scary at times, I write every day and mostly with my kids and the incident did shut down the Daly city Bart station for about a half an hour last night. Emanuel, Manny loon who owned a chain of bay area stores known to generations of children for the assortment of hard. Find toys before the business was whittled down to one location. Jeffries toys has died. He was ninety three loon died of heart failure October twenty third at his danville. Home said son, Geoffrey loom, for whom the store was named manual loon earned a reputation as the big kid at the store chains center and was remembered by his children for setting off water rockets at Berkeley traffic intersection outside one of his shops and building towers of toys just to see how high he could stack them Jeffries toys, located in San Francisco's financial district since two thousand seventeen is still humming amid a difficult time for toys stores. It's outlasted toys R us and survived the arrival of e commerce. Mark loon. His eldest son took over Jeffrey's toys nearly three decades ago and remains its owner. He just was not a get rich build an empire kinda guy said Jeffrey loon a photographer. He just worked really really hard. Emmanuel loon, married his teenage sweetheart Mildred and they had three children twins, Mark and Stevie and Jeffrey the children were of course, drafted into the toy business. Mark loon said he was the buyer for the hobby department by the time he was twelve when the children were young the loons lived in the bedroom community of San Lorenzo where people deck their front yards with elaborations at Christmas time, the spectacle, drew so many sightseers it required police to direct traffic. Jeffrey loon said the men in the neighborhood would take turns dressing as Santa Claus and handing out candy canes to children, Emmanuel loon would take his turn. But he also gave a gift to every kid. Jeffrey loon said his dad would put on the red suit and load his delivery van with wrapped gifts. Madam Alexander dolls for the girls and baseball mitts for the boys. He knocked on every door in the neighborhood where Jewish Jeffrey loon said, but as a family in the toy business Christmas was a major event for us. Emmanuel loon retired in nineteen eighty nine. To spend more time with family and handed off the business to Mark loom the business shrunk to one location on market street, which moved to Berkeley than forty five Colonel street in San Francisco assigned billing Jeffries toys, as the oldest toy store in San Francisco continues to draw tourists into the aisles, which are stuffed with jigsaw puzzles baby dolls and LEGO sets services were held at the chapel of the chimes and Hayward in his eulogy.
