A Northrop Grumman Antares rocket blasted off from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility Tuesday night. The rocket carried a Cygnus spacecraft with a payload of supplies for the International Space Station. Along with scientific investigations the mission will examine fire protection aboard spacecraft and the density of Earth's uppermost atmosphere. I'm Rebecca Hughes. You ever made a really big mistake at work, you know, like cutting off communication with a deep space probe? Thank goodness me neither. But that did happen to some folks at NASA. A happy resolution may be coming. Here's ABC's Brad Milkey. For almost half a century the Voyager 2 probe has been sailing through space. It went past Mars then Jupiter and Saturn finally out of the solar system. At this point it's more than 12 billion miles from Earth and it's still rightfully beaming back information we've never gotten from anywhere else. Well a weeks couple ago flight engineers accidentally sent a command to Voyager 2 to tilt its antenna 50 away degrees from Earth. Doesn't sound like much but that tiny shift was enough to render its coms useless. It's beaming information but to no one and mission control can no longer send it any commands. But a glimmer of hope NASA has this thing called the Deep Space Network satellite dishes around the world that constantly scan the sky for radio signals. Well yesterday they picked up the faintest of pulses from Voyager 2. It's called a heartbeat signal not enough to be useful. It's not facing the Earth squarely enough for that but it at least lets us know the craft is still functioning. But will we ever get in touch with Voyager 2 again? Thank goodness they thought of this before and every few months Voyager systems do an automatic reset to make sure its instruments are still facing Earth. The next reset occurs automatically in October meaning those engineers with the butterfingers will have to sit in silence a little bit longer.
