"Nerve left to go talk to a lot. But I want to Leroy became great friends of mine. And it just seemed like the life they lived was different than the training list today. And it would have been interesting to be able to step in their shoes for 24 hours. But they're both became very good friends. And that's also a highlight of my life. I tell you what I want to drivers. With being nice and we beat American feral Leroy jolly was down to two horses and he had them. I gave him two of my stalls in my barn. So I wanted to go with me. And when I walked back with the horse, the man standing to the barn was my hero growing up, Leroy jolly, to give me a hug and congratulations and welcome to the Travers club. Wow. So those guys would be my picks. Those were my heroes growing up the ones I looked up to the most. Do you now at this point in your career look at yourself as being that guy that maybe some young kid is looking up to and that you have a responsibility now to take other trainers, young trainers under your wing and kind of help them a little bit? You know, this is the older guys were so good to me. I try to help these younger guys and try to be good at them. I haven't found many of them that needed much up though. These guys are smart today's world. But I'll tell you a good story about that one day at Saratoga. I got too many stories. We could go on forever, but one day it was me and Tony Dutch roll and Rick Dutch O an angel Cordero and another guy. We went to the golf course at Sarah token national for lunch. And it of course, we're all heroes of angel. And we get him telling stories and we start talking about I start talking about the first time I saw Seattle slew. And getting to ride in a limousine with Billy Turner and listen to his stories about him and that they both start talking about Dutch rows about their father and buddy Delft and king leatherbury around Maryland and today and we were just like kids again just loving the horse racing and talking about how we grew up in the game and what it meant to us. So we're walking out and Tony put his arm around me when we were leaving. And Tony had won the Alabama and I want to drivers. And Tony put his arm around me. He said, you think there's any kids looking up to us the way we did all those guys coming up? I said, I don't know, but I hope so. Yeah, well, I'm sure there are. And I think just based on the response we're getting from folks that enjoy you every Saturday morning on I asked the answer with Timmy. I think there's a lot of people that look up to Dale Romans and the way that you've handled yourself throughout your career, Dale. So kudos to you. If Dale Romans was going to create a bucket list of things you still want to accomplish. Obviously The Kentucky Derby is at the top of the list. But what are some of the other things in the sport that you haven't done that you would love to accomplish? Well, Kentucky Derby's number one, of course. I would say Belmont be number two and that would give me the whole Triple Crown. I'd love to win a breeder scope classic. I think that, you know, I love that race too. I think the British cops done great things for horse racing. But I think when it's all said and done, it's over. I hope people can look back and say, I left the game better than I found it. And I had a little bit of contribution to it. Well, that leads me into my next question then. What do you think you're most proud of when you think back on your career and everything that you've done? And able to feed my family? The advice from your father. The advice from my father to how to measure success. Yeah, you know, spend a minute. We've got about 5 minutes left in the show. Spend a couple of minutes talking about your family and I know you're a wonderful family man. And I know that they mean the world to you, obviously. But spend a few minutes, obviously actively involved in the business and they love being around dad and the horses. So tell me more about your family. Yeah, well Tammy's sitting right here with me. I mean, we're like mutton Jeff. I'm 6 four. She's four 6. Wherever

"To deal with the things you can change and what it was the serenity player prayer. Yeah. And not worry about the things you can't. And give me the wisdom to know the difference. Yeah, yeah, I mean, time has certainly changed Dale Romans, but it has for every trainer too. I remember Bob Baffert talking to me about that. When I interviewed him before The Kentucky Derby a few years ago and he talked about being a totally different trainer now than when he first came over from quarter horses. And I think it's just natural with anybody that does something for so long. You look at things differently. You don't get as upset over things that used to kind of bother you and get under your skin. And you just kind of handled things in a more professional fashion. Yeah, it's just waste of time. There's no reason to do it. What things make? Thanks a long time learning. I think one of the greatest ones bob ever ever he started really doing good and winning races and some went reporter asking what he had done differently. He said he changed his feet program. And he said, oh yeah, would you change to? He said, I started feeding faster horses. That makes a difference. Well, okay, let's take that for a second, then Dale, because I've said this many times on the show that a horse trainer, just like a coach in any sport, is only as good as their players. So if you don't have the players, it's hard to win. It is, it's hard. You got to, you know, you got to have the people to work with the horses to work with. It's like just like you say any coach. You got to have good players and if we don't have a player, you can only do so much. You can only make them run so fast. You know, and then Wayne told me years ago, he earned the right to train the horses so you see trains. And we can get in their way. I think more times than not we get in their way and cause them to be losers more than we make them winners. We learned that as you get older too, the best thing to do is just get them fit and happy and stay out of the way. Yeah, happy horses. Just keep them happy and let them do their thing. Exactly. If you could Dale, I'm going to give you three choices here. Well, I'll let you choose them. But if you could pick three trainers, not just modern day trainers, but any trainer in the history of the sport. And you could trade places with them for a day. What three trainers are you going to choose? What do you see as Leroy jolly and Alan jerkins? How come? Because they're old school. They knew the game when it was at its greatest. It was a different world back then. And I worked for woody when I was a kid for a little while. I never got friendly with wood. I was too young. He was too much on a pedestal for me to be

"Going on that we can not win on the lead. So we're going to panic and still Ramon. Ramon, you're not going to believe this, but I want you to lay third. There's too fast horses. Just sit behind them, but act like you're on the lead. Ride like you're on the lead because I think they'll stop and you'll inherit the lead at the 8th pole. And then you just got to ride your ass off from late for the wire. And if you go back and watch, it may be the greatest race in the dark you ever wrote this life. And Ramon did just what we said, the two horses. So I'm very often you could draw it up and I don't give many instructions to jockeys. But that one just seemed so clear to me. And it's just the way we drew it up. He inherited his latest April and here comes shove horse, the favorite flying on the outside and he doesn't get to us and we win going to mile and a half and I think it was one of remote greatest races. And I think I've told this story on here before, but so fast forward Ramon gets hurt with lower tires. And he's still a good friend and we're at Saratoga one day and Saratoga had this big thing. They brought in all the Hall of Fame jockeys, almost every living Hall of Fame jockey. They brought in for that afternoon. Yeah. I came out of the races and I'm going to the parking lot and Ramon standing there and I go and talk to me. He's like a kid in a candy store. Tell me. He says, you won't believe what I was doing. So what are you doing? I'm hanging out with Georgia Velasquez. Angel Cordero, lafitte pink Cox. We're all over there. They're telling me all these stories. You still we feel a gun. Do you not realize? Here's how humble he is, this guy. I said, you not realize that you're ever been as good as ever won him and better than most that you just talked to and hung out with. Yeah. And he looked at me like he does sometimes Ramon hesitate for saying that he said, I think you're biased because we did something special together. Yeah, he is, he is truly one of the great people, human beings in the sport of thoroughbred racing. I'm glad he's still involved. I'm glad you still see Ramon Dominguez around the racetrack because, you know, he's one of those guys that if racing didn't have him around, it would be a massive, massive loss. Racing is always better with guys like Ramon and bob. Yep. Yeah, no doubt about it. You know, by the way, visiting with trainer Dale Romans here on trainer talk presented by phasic tipton kind of going down memory lane, remembering some of the top horses and some of the moments that surrounded those horses. And Dale, I was looking this up and I was blown away that this and I'm going to bring something up that you probably don't want public, but we're going to make it on public on Saturday. You're entering a third year now without winning a great stakes race, which is unfathomable. It's mind-blowing. How challenging have these past couple of years been for you both personally and professionally even? You know how I look at it. I look at this, it's on fire, but I've won 200 greatest stakes or whatever it is. And so if I took a couple of years out from not doing it, that's all right. We'll bounce back, we're going to win us some few. I've got if I don't ever want another one. I've gotten more than most people are more than I ever thought I would in my life. So I just go out there every day. You're only you're a victim of your link crop every year. And so even though it sounds like a long period of time, it's only a couple of sales that you haven't come out with a top one. And but I think this year we're on the verge of having a really good year. We might want to do this year and maybe a few grade ones, and maybe a classic. Yeah, you know, you can't keep a good man down. And that's certainly the motto that surrounds you right now. You also made some changes personally in your life and Dale, I saw a picture of you the other day, and I thought I was looking at a jockey. You've lost so much weight. You look great. Yeah, I have gastric sleep surgery. I got up to almost 400 pounds, and that's the damn, I got to do something. I had gastric sleep surgery a couple of friends of mine have had it done, and it worked well for them, but they were both they were all pushing me to go give it a shot. And it's the best thing ever happened to me. I've lost a 150 pounds and quit drinking. I feel good and energized again, so hopefully it pays off and business to. Yeah, yeah, I think it has to. You know, I received an email when we announced that you were going to be joining me here on the show and it came from somebody we both know. Bob keycap for who writes for the UPI. He's a turf writer for them. And he said, he said, you know, if you want to a sad chuckle from Dale, ask him about finding a new way to lose after all of the ones that he's lost over the years on Saturday in the second race at Gulfstream. He said something happened that Dale has never had happened to him before. So Dale, tell me that story. Yeah, that was what I told him when we were after the race. So I thought I knew every way in the world it was to lose this was a new one. The buckle on the stirrup webbing gave way and unbuckled in the jock had no stir up to put his foot in. He's lucky and kill himself and fall off. And let me explain everybody. That's not my talk. The jockey's on it, the jockey's maintained it. For obvious reasons, it's all on them for safety. In the bunker came undone and junior alvarado literally almost fell off the horse and had to gallop him around there like an Indian sitting flat on his back and just pulling him up. So now that's another way to lose. Chop it up. You know, I can win a $3 million race. I mean, how bad would it have been if it came off and had a little injury or something? Right, right. You know, I can imagine that, I mean, you see something like that happen. And you've been in this game a long time. And you have to take a step back and say, you have to be kidding me. There's no way that we could possibly lose any other way than what I've done in the past. And I really like the horse. He's a really good horse, Kentucky Joker. I just shook my head, you can't get mad. I mean, things happen. What are you going to do? And I think junior thought I was going to be really mad when he came back because I mean, I'm just glad you're safe. We'll reload. We'll run again a couple of weeks and see what happens. But yeah, that found a new way to lose. Yeah, there has to be so frustrating, frustrating for a trainer too, because you do everything right with the horse. You get a horseshoe like, you bring them into the race the right way. You think he's ready to go. And then something completely out of your control happens. How do you deal with that? It's not easy a lot of times. That's what I was talking about earlier. 30 years ago, I lost my mind, but nowadays you learn to deal with the things you can change and what it was the serenity player prayer. Yeah. And not worry about the things you

"Would act all the time. And watch Ken's joy in the stall. And it was just like watching Fred Astaire move. He just watching walk around the stall was different than anything I've ever been around. And he was just a fabulous fabulous resource. And a major impact in the breed. I mean, it's been a great science. At the end of the day, it came down to getting Ramsay's choosing to pick one or the other. You either keep things doing make him a starting sell roses or you keep roads will still enjoy. My recommendation was to keep kids joy and he really couldn't believe that I said that because he was a grass horse in this country. I said, but you don't understand the class difference. Kitten was just all classed or went through a 5 year old could walk him around the barn. One day I'm bringing him off the layoff and Iran him in the firecracker and my good friend Robbie albright who was in the race and Robbie said if kids joy went buying so fast he said he'd cut himself for about 5 strikes, not riding just watching him run. And I thought that was the ultimate compliment. Yeah. Yeah. One day at the truck, I had him walking around the barn and Robbie came to him in the morning. He was just walking under attack and he hadn't gone out. He said, like me, he wrote him a couple laps around the show. He jumped off, and he said, now I can say I wrote the great kittens joy. I love it. But he rolled him around and said, well, I love it. I mean, those horses kitchen joy roses in May, so special to you. But there have been so many others. And we're going to leave, we're going to leave some out if we start talking about everyone individually. But I do want to bring up a couple. Horses like shackelford, who you mentioned earlier. And little Mike. And silver max and keen ice. Those were such tough, hard knocking horses that you had the privilege to be around. When you think back on all the good ones Dale, what are some of the ones that really do jump off the page to you? Little Mike's a good one to talk about. I mean, we could sit here all day. We could make two or three shows if you want one day would just talking about this stuff, but a little Mike was the little engine that could. I mean, he's about $500 stallion. They gave the owner the mayor when he bred him. And not a horse you would ever buy. I always said little Mike made me feel dumb in a cell because I would have never a body. His legs weren't straightest in the world. He was very wide. He was a little bitty narrow thing. But he was just a little engine that could. And you know, we decided to run, he was always considered going to be a mile, 'cause he was so fascinated to go leave. We decided to try him in a mile quarter and only 2 million. It's one of the greatest races out there and run second with kids joy. But race that really wanted them our resume. And he went out there with among the main guys and went wire to wire. One thing. So we're going to the British government. Everybody said it's a fluke. You know, he could get a mile and a quarter. It was one time because nobody thought he could do it. So they let him alone on the league. So we were going to go back and run the greatest cup mile in San Anita. In a couple of days for the race, Carlo and I said, look, man, horses. You know, we got to run against wise man. I don't know we can beat while it's there. I don't know. He's just too good. It's time to, so we decided to Ronnie, a mile and a half in the breeders cup. I hope you come out and I don't remember the horse's name, but part out of horse and know that was really fast and Joe bravo was riding. And Joe had ridden with a mic so much. He knew at least he thought he knew that we were going to go to the lead. I knew after Joe is going to send out there focus going on that we can not win on the lead. So we're going to panic and still Ramon. Ramon, you're not going to believe this, but I want you to lay third. There's too fast

"Time for us to quit fighting with one another. And just figure out which rules need to be tweaked, change seats on everything I've asked her to be. She put together advisory board of force when she puts the national hbp president on that advisory board and she's shown her willingness to listen to what we say and fix the problems that we have. So it's not going anywhere. So I think it's time for us to start working with them and get everybody on the same page. Yeah, I think the biggest thing now and organizations like the hbp are obviously opposed to hissa because of the fact that they think that some of the language in there is unconstitutional. And the way that the whole thing was put together is unconstitutional, they're not necessarily opposed to some of the things that the organization is going to try to do to help horse racing, but they're concerned about the constitutionality of it. Do you agree with that? Yeah, I agree with it, and that's what I'm kind of a bridge in the middle it seems like. I like both sides. And I agree with certain things on each side. But I disagree with a lot of things. And I keep telling them, I said, the national HPV fighting, trying to make this thing constitutional. It's only going to make it stronger and then, because we're going to have, they're going to be forced to do it right. Yeah. And you know what, we need 95% of the people that detractors and the people worrying about federal government being involved is federal funding. We need somebody. You know, they did mandate that we used this system to regulate ourselves, but they didn't give us any money to do it. But the $60 billion economic impact on the unit United States are horse industry. And while we need 50 to a $100 million a year to operate, that's a pretty good return on investment. So I think the thing that needs to be doing is we need to have the lobbyists who need to be in capital hill, trying to get 50 to a $100 million a year. So that we can regulate our business and make that impact on the United States. I think you would lose a lot of detractors. It always comes down to money, right? And that was one of the big sticking points with the legislation when it was first put forth and made it through and became law. A lot of horsemen and racetracks and racing officials were saying, hey, wait a minute. Something isn't right here. Who the hell is paying for this thing? And that was at its crux. That's what everybody's upset about right now. Yeah, that's the biggest issue. That's the biggest sticking point because why does it matter who regulates this if it's a state of Kentucky, it's a federal government. We're all going to be regulated and maybe we need to go into the 21st century of regulation. But we need to find a way to fund it. So anybody out there that likes horse racing and contributes to that $60 billion economic impact. Let's get on with your congressman and let them know. Give us a little bit of money. It's not that much. It's less than the cost in the missiles to Ukraine. I mean, to get them there, not much, much less shooting them all. And we'll bring back a lot of money for the federal government for the United States people to work in our game. Talking with trainer Dale Romans here on trainer talk presented by phasic tipton. I started the show by telling you that you can catch Dale and so many of you have every single Saturday along with his sidekick Tim wilkin on I asked they answer, which airs at ten 30 eastern every Saturday morning on our equine forum show. Dale, one thing you just brought up, you mentioned that when you talked with Alan jerkins, he said, hey, either adapt and evolve and change the way you do business or get out of the game, how much have you changed since you first got into the sport. Now, how much are you a different trainer than you were back then? How much different? A much different. You know, when you're young, you got to use full enthusiasm. And later on, you have age and wisdom. And you don't quite get as upset about little things that you used to and you understand. It's more about the horse. We've got the fastest horse. And that's why I keep telling you all we talk about all these polls and statistics. And so the bottom line is line them up to 5% of the wire. And but a lot of things have changed, but more than anything is. The intensity, I think. And he realized things are going to happen every day. You just got to get up to that deal with it. When I was young, I would come as barn every morning, just waiting for that day that I would have a perfect morning. Not no horse was injured, no horse ate up. Nobody had a temperature, nobody was coughing. It didn't happen in 40 years. So I finally decided it didn't go to happen. I quit waiting for it. Electronics, electronics have changed the game as much as anybody. You know, I used to run to the newsstand to get to newspaper to see the results in New York or California. And everything is instant gratification right now. And I think our game is made for this. The Internet and for instance, gratification. There are so many ways for fans and horsemen to keep in touch with each other and to get the sport out there. And we're doing that here on trainer talk on this edition here this afternoon. Dale Romans is when he'll stay with me. I have to get to a short commercial break. We'll come back and talk about more of those memories in your career. I'll let you tell a few more stories. "To him. May grew up in a little more. He started his career at right out of college. He didn't know anything about horses. And miles park, it used to be a little racetrack and. Someday we're almost going to have been the whole time weighing a strainer there. I think would have blown him away. He was still in all the game. He came in, he wasn't born into it, and he walked in out of college. And he was very much doing all of the game and the people at the top. And I think he would have been very proud. No, I have no doubt, and we're talking about Dale's father, Jerry, and the success that he had as a trainer, winning more than 600 races in his career and he kind of grinded it out with a lot of those claiming horses and the lower level horses, but he loved the game and there's no doubt about it. Did you have a favorite horse of his that he trained Dale that you got to be around as a kid? Oh yeah, I mean, we didn't have very many good ones. I think the best source you ever had was really named captains rose in the late 70s. She won a few little stakes around town and stuff. But there were all those old good horses. I claimed one that he tried for me when I was 15 years old. Our fat Rooney, that was my favorite horse of all time. So as I claim three, three different times. We had a horse named trig narrowly claimed for the 15 to 20,000 when the real well if you want to bunch of handicaps with a horse named field House. Back in the 70s. That was the one he was most proud of. He liked the most. So they could train for 10,001 like 5 handicaps in a roll up in New England when they had all those racetracks in New England and he always go up to like answer rocking him, green mountain par Suffolk downs and other tracks are even there anymore. Yeah. I was just a lot of fun and you know he was leading trainer twice at Ellis park and one or two times at third way and he got he took a lot of pride in that. It was two and a quarter miles. It was twice around on a mile and 8th race track and it was a starter handicapped at random. The last race of the meet every year. And he did whatever he could to try to have horse to win that race. That was his Kentucky Derby. And he won it three or four times. That's fantastic. I just went and pulled up his top horses here on equibase. And his top earner all time was a horse called count the blues. Do you remember that one? Oh yeah, counts of blues was a good horse and that was when I was actually working for him back then. It was owned by Frank Jones, which I still train for today. And probably the greatest unknown man in the game. And count the blues with a nice little horse. Yeah, I earned almost 300,000. So I mean, for a stable like that that was kind of making their living with claiming horses, that's a lot of money. You know, my father used to that was a lot of money, but I'll follow you talk about success in this game. And he said, did you feed your family? And did you stay in it for a long time? Lisa, you got to use that as a measure of success more than X is known for what races you want and didn't win. And that's always stuck in my mind. And he fed his family and he made it all the way to the end of his life, but she died young. And of course, Frank Jones, it was just main crime. Frank was at the hospital there was born. He doesn't have any kids, and he said, in his mid 80s today and he still a vice chairman of Kentucky state racing commission and he said two trainers and 60 years. Me and my father. Wow. Wow, I didn't realize that. Yeah, he was behind the two of us all the way. So whenever count the blues was one of the horses when I first wanted to start going to Saratoga and I would start going south in the winter at first New Orleans events moved to Florida. Frank Jones would always tell my father to pick out one or two horses. For me to take. So I would have the horse I could win a race with. He still took care of me today. Yeah, that's fantastic. You know, you mentioned your dad saying, you know, can you feed your family? Can you stay in it for a long time? This is not an easy profession, Dale. Let's not sugarcoat it. You've had a lot of success. You've won a lot of big races. We see a lot of trainers like Todd and Wayne and Nick zito over the years. Steve assumed that when these big races, but the majority of trainers were out there grinding it out, just trying to make a living. How does a trainer stay in this game for a long time? What's the key? It's a tough go. I'll tell everybody all these kids that come in in the game, especially some of them from their own children. I said, blame it. It's a better hobby than it is career choice. It's too tough. It is suits up. And I don't know. It's every day you get up and work. You get up and do what you can do just to stay in the game. But there's so many variables of playing golf with basketball coach one day and you got the same problem I do. We have all the responsibilities and very few of the controls. Right. And that's what you got to have. But you got to have a lot of luck and you got to be consistent. You got to show up every day. You got to be honest with people. Do what you can do to grind out some wins. But what have you done for me lately sport? You know, the games changed so much too. And now with his and the legislation, all these different things that are taking place in our sport that are making headlines. Do you think Dale, if you were just starting out today? Do you think you'd make the same decision to go ahead and be a horse trainer today, knowing that this is the environment you're getting into? I'm pretty sure I would. And I think about it some of the young kids coming up because there's so many good young trainers behind us. They're really making an impact on again. We talk about it every week on our show. I think it will be easier to step into today's world than it would be to come up through the old days and do it the way we used to do it into today's world. I think that the guys that kind of grew up in the game and did it a certain way for so long are going to have more trouble converting to the new systems and the new ways of doing things.

"1977 when I was 9 years old. But I don't know. I'm thinking about it all the time. And I can't grasp what it would be like to be to win the Derby. To stand on the pedestal to take the trophy from one of my very best Friends in Mark bacon that presents the trophy for Woodford reserve. And stand up on that stage. I know we'd have a hell of a party that night in downtown. He'd have to make an extra Woodford reserve for that party. He saved me back a couple of bottles every year and I have one in it just in those commemorative bottles in case we win it. Which of those derbies that you, you came close a couple of times. Patio Prado, third, I remember doula Han was third shackleford was fourth. Which of those ones kind of sticks in your craw the most? When you think back on. I tell everybody that with Shaq for taking the lead at the apo, I know what it feels like to think you're going to win a Derby. I haven't gotten to the fact that I know what it feels like to win it. But shackleford, I mean, there's some horses, a metal count. If you go back and watch Israel, he got so much trouble, he could have been a lot closer. I think it was 6 or 7. And keen ice, being ice was in trouble the whole trip. And end up 5th or 6. It ran a big race. But shackleford coming off the league. And I'll tell you a story. Jesus gets voting. And I had ridden how you sleep some he broke and made fat el Prado. He broke his maiden of. The same thing as the name right now. But I told him in the paddock of first dude, he broke and made a first dude. I told him to panic for shackleford. That's it. We were 60 to one in the Florida Derby. And nobody really wanted to ride him again, showing himself yet. I thought ASUS and there said, if you weren't big here, I will not take you off this horse, no matter what. And he got beat ahead to dial in. Our good friend Nick Zeno. He was right that day I was wrong. And so we left imani, but Jesus told me he said, even when the pregnancy was so big for him 'cause he stayed on to one of the fragments. He said, but coming off of that turn into the stretch on a lead in The Kentucky Derby. He said, you get hit with a wall of sound that you can't imagine that he never expected. It's almost like it hits you. And he said, that's the biggest thrill I've ever had in my career coming off of that turn on the lead in The Kentucky Derby. Even bigger than going on and winning the frequency. Wow. Well, you know, I remember Mike Smith telling me once when I interviewed him before The Kentucky Derby a few years ago. He walked me through his win with giacomo and Dale, he went step by step every point in the race, but then he said that when he, when he hit the finish line, he said there was this weird moment of silence that he got when he crossed the finish line and then everything just exploded from there. When the sound came back for him, it was he said it almost knocked him off the horse. It was that type of powerful sound that he got and the roar from the crowd and it was just unbelievable. He told me the same story and it gives me chills even hearing it today from you. Yeah. And now tell everybody, you'll have to find a trainer for the fragments because I'll drop the mic if I ever wanted to do that. But I keep going. Wayne Lucas is a full of it and I'll keep right on going. It just go out on top. That's it. Yeah, go out on top, you know, John Elway at leaves. But you know, your dad was such a big influence on you and he was a hardworking trainer too. What do you think your dad would say if he could see all the success you've had? Yeah, I don't know. You know how father and son dynamics are. I always, he never said a whole lot to me, but then I run into all his friends and he thoughts about it because he got to see me be link trained in one time a church boy passed away. He's only 58 when he died. And I run into all his friends that tell me now thank good things positive and how proud he was. He would say to me and I don't know, I wish he was here. I wish he was seeing all the great ones and debris cups and Dubai World Cup and the frequency never got to see any of that. Like I said he died at 58 of a rare blood disorder and the good story though, he's sitting in his hospital bed and I'm heading here, I think I was one in front of wing and where we came from. There was no plan on ever. He was leading trader that was park. He was lead training and surfing. It was a whole different level. And I just remember everybody saying in the hospital room and I'm leaving to go back to the racetrack and he called me back in the room and he said, don't let him catch you. He says, you don't know how big it would be to be lean trainer church events. And we ended up tying for the thing. He was happy with that. He said, that's good enough. Me and Wayne time because that was a mice and Wayne's the best one in the world at the time with. And I thought about it that day I came to all time leading trainer at Churchill. Since been passed, I will see. Now second, but I had it for a little while. And what you were thought at all time leading trainer Churchill down. I think that would have been bigger to him. May grew up in a little more. He started his

"Presented by phasic tipton. Dale appreciate the visit. You know that you can get me anytime talk about horse racing. Why do you think racing fans and people in the industry have always kind of been drawn to you? I don't know, it's crazy thing to me. It's more crazy than me about here's the thing. Why don't everybody speak honestly and openly? I don't understand that. People seem to like that and politics or horse racing or whatever the sport is. And hey, we're all in it together. We're out the player. We got no game. So we're all in it together. You know, people will often ask me, what's Dale Romans really like? And I say, well, what you see is what you get. I mean, every week when you listen to that segment, that's Dale Romans. And I think that's what makes you who you are. Well, I appreciate that. And believe me, I love the fans out there in horse racing. And they're always, they've always been good to me. From the time I won my first race and I don't know, but I appreciate it. You know, I describe you though, Dale is being humble and people really take a step back and say humble. He's always so outgoing and charismatic. I said, yeah, but don't confuse that for cockiness. He's always very humble. You kind of embrace your role as the public figure in the sport, but you almost kind of, at times, shy away from the attention that seems to come your way. Do you agree? You're the only one that seems to get me. Tammy says I'm a tension hungry all the time, but I don't know people come up to me, want to talk about horse racing. What are you going to do? I just talked to him. I don't care. If you're racing fan, you're my friend. That's exactly the way it comes across. And that's what I try to tell people. Was it always like this for you? Were you the cool kid in school that everybody wanted to hang out with? I had a lot of friends in high school. I never had a problem. I didn't talk a whole lot back then, believe it or not. People can't believe that. I was not quite kind of introverted, and I don't know, after I got out in the world, I figured why you got to be introvert. Let's just talk and everybody's in the same boat. And just tell the truth and everybody everything will fall into place. And it's worked for me. I can not picture you being shy. Yeah, back in high school days and grade school days. Yeah, I kind of soaked behind my brother. He's only 17 months older than me. I was a little bit quiet back then, but I guess things have changed. Well, I know people really enjoy. These days. Yeah, well, and we're going to talk about that over the course of the next 50 minutes or so here on the show. But, you know, I think people really enjoy your honesty, your candidness, they enjoy the personality, all of that comes together. But they also enjoy watching your horses run. And you've got a good run, a good one running on Saturday and cyclone mischief who goes in the grade three holy bull stakes. Still has a lot to prove, but you've been saying all along that this is a horse that has immense talent and a huge upside. He really does. He's such a good horse. And let me tell you something in horse racing, life is so much better when you're on the Derby trail. We've been fortunate enough to run 11 horses in Kentucky derbys. And they get you up in the morning. Every day to get this

"You can make a mistake and fall into a winner circle. Family time ran on the dirt over here. We didn't run on it to PETA. But she did run very well and Corey rode her well and you know we've kind of figured out with her. She can get to the leads. She's hard to get by and that's what happened the other day and she paid $30 and a lot of people out of my friends made a lot of money. Thank you, Dale. All right. All right. Still a couple minutes left, 888-966-4776. I love when these listeners welcome us to the program. They're welcoming you. They're thanking you for joining us. This is fantastic. It's good stuff. All right, couple minutes left 888-966-4776. Eric is in West Virginia and he sends a note to the show. And again, that's another way to do it. It might get horse racing radio dot net. And he said, good Dale, please spend a minute talking about roses in May. There you go, Dale. There you go, Rosen, amazing. Great story. He was my first grade one winner. And he had been with Todd Fletcher and he had injured attendant. He was turned out. Ken Ramsey, I went up on a first start working for him inspecting all the babies. And there's a three year old in a barn. And he's got he does have a tenant. So on the way back, I called Ken and I said Ken, I'll tell you about your babies later, but I love that dark horse. We need to get him off this little racetrack. Can I bring him on in? He said, you're going to have, you know, that's a pretty good story. He said, but did you go to the coal barn with a horses were selling? I said, no, I didn't. So I whipped in there. And they pull out 5 horses are going through the sale with no reserve and this big pretty chestnut walks out. I said, damn, that's a nice source. I get back in the car and call Ken. I said, keep the chestnut. Well, the chestnut ended up being kitten's joy. The bay horse was rose to me. So if I wanted to see rows in May, I never know about kids joy. And that trip to up there changed my entire life. But he was a tough horse to train, but he wanted to get out, you know, pull it outside, and he had a bad feed. He always was cracking a hole for something. And it's like hangnails. They get quarter cracks, and he was had one in every foot all the time, and he had that old ten and you had to work it. But when he never had a horse that could go so fast early and never get tired. In Dubai for the World Cup and we draw the 12 hole outside which ends up being pretty good because it was a one turn mile a quarter. And we're talking Johnny, you know, you go and lead and slowing down slowing down. I kind of interrupt us. Listen, Johnny gole go fast, because they're all going to pull them all out of their race. They're all going to be chasing you and none of them will be able to finish. And if you watch, it looks like chalk to our nation's going to fly by him and he just hits the wall and no roses just never got tired and kept right on going. And after the press conference and everything, I'm going back to the barn and there was nobody there, but me and him, it was pitch black outside and I went and put him in a sand pit and let him roll around and I said, you just bailed me out of a lot of traps, buddy. Thank you very much. What a great story. One more color on the line. We do have time for one more call. It's done in Nashville, Don. Go ahead. You're on with del Romans. AO, I just wanted to tell you that I've been to the Churchill downs many times and I've been to the Derby many, many years and the one enjoyment that I get every time I'm there is when I can see you down saddling your horses and mingling with the crowd and just being an all right gentleman. And I appreciate that and I wish you all the luck in the world. Thank you, Don next time you're there. Yell at me. You come sit with me in the box for a race. I can't believe how many race and fans come out of Tennessee. And there's no racing down there. I don't know where they got connected. But there's a whole brigade of them. Yeah, yeah. There really is. Don appreciate the phone call. We ended up dropping down right after he asked the question so he didn't get a chance to respond. But that's a very nice offer and I'm sure Don will take you up on that when you see some Churchill next time Dale. Sounds good. All right. Dale Romans, you be the host. I appreciate everybody who called in. Well, thank you and thank you for sending those emails to the show too. Dale appreciate you taking some time, my friend and we're going to look forward to catching up again in about ten minutes with the I asked the answer. We got a lot to talk about. See you talk to you in a minute..

"What kind of fondest memories you have of that coming north of the border? Also traveling around the world, give me a give us a viewing or listening audience a little bit of a play on how you're feeling about and where you've been and any good times you've had. Well, Canada, I've only been to believe it or not a couple of times, and one time first time I went to a run something. I didn't get to go. The first time I went was just to go up on a vacation trip and went to the races just for fun. And I love Canadian racing. We've run a few there, one a couple of races, but it's beautiful. But the main place I've been to buy 8 times have been to Hong Kong to race. You know, horse race is a great equalizer all around the world. And we all do it basically the same way. People you run into everywhere when you travel the world are all the same. We all love racing with all the horses. And it becomes a big party and it's been a lot of fun. But it's hard to beat Hong Kong or Dubai, both of them are just so much excitement and so such big races and so many people turn out and it's just totally first class event. Again, you get to you get to be around greatness in this game. And that's one of the so many good things about horse racing. That's one of them. It just makes everybody equal around the world. You know, this segment is called you be the host. I turn the show over to listeners and they get to host the show and Lou nailed it when he called in. Lou, that was outstanding. Welcome both of us to the podcast. He didn't just ask you a question. He opened the show, Dale. I like that. I like that. Come on. People don't need to be afraid to call and ask. Yeah, you've done it before. You hijack the show. I remember that one morning at king. I had to get you started one day. I do have an email here. John in Maryland wants to know what your favorite memory of shackleford oh, there's so many good ones. I sacrificed, but I think coming from Maryland, he knows which one's my fondest. When he took turn and cut the corner at pimlico and opened up to and then held off the Derby one or to win the Preakness. And, you know, if you win a classic, that just puts your career on a different level. And I've been third in a previous three times, but we did get to one at once. And that was a great day. It's a great day as a train. I remember that next morning. I woke up a little headache. I don't remember why. And a phone rings. It was Jack Vlad. And then that old gruff voice and he said, welcome to the club, boy, you're a classic one in trainer now. I said it's done getting better than that. All right, call in now. 888-966-4776. Your chance to be the host of the show and talk with trainer Dell Roman's Todd is in Minnesota. Todd, go ahead. Your honor Dell Romans. Hello, Dale. Yeah, and thanks for telling me about hauling time on Halloween. That was fantastic, had a nice day. Yeah. Yeah, that was a good hunchback. Okay. First off, I got a compliment, and then a question for you. I want to thank you for being so honest with your answers and not worrying about being politically correct. And this is going to be kind of a dumb answer, but being here so even killed, you probably don't care, but what do you feel about winning the Derby or how much do you put the attention or what would it mean to you? That's first of all, thank you, and I don't know about how to be politically correct and it's probably something problems in my life. But no, the Derby is center for the biggest thing we're all looking for. All of us are working for the same thing. And my career now, especially with the help from the old balls and a lot of the good owners I have, but we've got to program strictly to get to the Derby. And we've been able to do it four times, but Jason that manages the team of all racing told me our goals have changed. It's not to get to the Derby mortgage to win the Derby. So it's about 80% of my focus in my life. Okay, well, good luck. I know you got a couple contenders probably this year, so hopefully they stay healthy and I hope you win it. You deserve it. Thank you, bob. We got a couple going that way. All right, 888-966-4776. You have about 5 minutes left in this segment to be the host of the show. Again, we do this every Saturday, 10 a.m. eastern, and you get to call in and ask questions. Which is kind of nice. I get a little break here, Dale. I like this. Our listeners are asking great questions, too. They are asking good questions. Intelligent listeners. Yeah. We've been working on it for a long time. We've been doing this a while and you've been educating them for a while. 888-966-4776. Matt is in Louisville. Matt, you are on the line with del Romans. Go ahead. Hey, dad, welcome to the show. I was always about to have you. I'm just comment about family Tom. You want me a lot of money on that to PETA racetrack and I'm seeing what made you think you would like to Peter and also how's that game doing? I had him 35 to one year. First of all, giant games doing great. He's he hasn't missed a beat since we're putting back on the serious schedule after British copy hasn't missed a beat he's worked right down here in pointing towards the holy ball. But I hate to tell you, you know, handicapping a lot.

"Yeah, of course you'll be back later ten 30 eastern with Tim wilkin and I asked the answer. I do have a question via email that was submitted by Sally Ellen in Maryland and she wants to know how you found your experience when judging the Maryland horse breeders association yearling show back in 2017. Hey, that's a good question. That was one of the greatest weekends of my life. I'd say, and it was an honor to do. He looked down to the list of guys that have gone over there and done it from Alan jerkins or woody Stevens and Leroy jolly. The hero, my heroes growing up and in for them to invite me and Tammy she helped me the whole time. It was just an extremely fun event. And I'm waiting on another invitation to come back. Well, she also wanted to thank you from a showman's point of view for changing up the class procedures. I guess allowing the year links to walk around the ring clockwise with the horses on the inside of the handler until the judge was ready. And she said, it made a big difference to those that were on the shanks that day. That was a lot of help. That was a really fun day. And why do you think, call me again? We'll come back. Never pass up a chance for crap cakes. All right, your chance to talk to trainer Dale Romans. If you've ever had a question you wanted to ask Dale, now is the time to do it. This next 15 minutes is all about you. You be the host of the show 8 8 8 9 6 6 four 7 7 6, the number to call Gus is in Florida. Gus, go ahead. You're on the line with Dale Romans. Hey, Dale, how are you doing? I'm doing great, Gus. What's going on today? Not much. Not this time. I mean, he's becoming a very prominent sire. I mean, he's got probably the favors today in the lecom at the fairgrounds. He always he also has a simplification, probably in a couple of weeks in a holy bowl, just so what did you see in him and what do you think his potential is as a sire, especially going no longer distances. No, let me tell you something he was a horse that he had of minor injury when he was a baby. He was so we didn't know how long he could make it, but the four races I had him. I think he's the best dirt horse I ever had by far. And he was just the absolute perfect horse. He had a class about a way acted. He had the looks. He had a deep pedigree. You know, he's a half brother Liam's map. His sister Taylor S I got her first full stand here looking at me right now to barn. He's just got all the parts to be the next storm cat. And now he's getting the merits of mayors that fold this year are all the quality grade one race mares Greg one producers. He's got some great mares coming. It's doing great right now, but it's going to be exciting when he's good and he moves them all up. And he said, no tell him how good he can get. All right, 88. They'll go ahead. Sorry, I didn't mean to cut you off. I was going to say that's right to hear in a best wishes with giant scheme going through the Triple Crown. Thank you. I got howling time too. He just worked this morning. Don't forget about him. He's not this time. Keep your eye out for him. All right, Gus in Florida. I appreciate the phone call. 8 8 8 9 6 6 four 7 6. If you want to four 7 7 6, if you want to talk to Dale Romans, you can do it right now. 8 8, 8, 9, 6, 6, 8, call Dale and ask him anything you've always wanted to ask him. Dale, I noticed that we had somebody that was kind of hating on the beard on social media, wanted to know when you were going to shave off that as they called it ridiculously looking beard. I think it looks cool. I liked it, but it's gone. It's been gone since first new year. So, yeah. It's cut 20 years off of my life, I said. It probably did. I always thought it looked kinda good. It kind of set you apart. Right, that was a little different. Yeah, I didn't ever had a beard. I grew on a pandemic, and I left it for a while. It's gone, no. How come you wanted to grow in? What led you to do that? But just being bored, locked in the house, and then I got used to not shaving. All right, 888-966-4776, and never to call, asked Dale Romans anything you'd like. He's had a storied career and I tell you all the time that it's a sport filled with characters and character and Dale is certainly one of those. He's larger than life in the game of thoroughbred racing, and you get a chance to talk to him right here on UB the host. Dale, there's going to be people that are gun shy and don't want to call in because they don't want to be on radio. So we're encouraged them to that they can email us. Mike get horse racing radio dot net if they want to ask you a question that way. I have a question for you. So your greatest training feat of all time. If you could pick one, what would that training fee be? A little Mike going to mile and a half in the breeders cup, turf. I thought, you know, you had Ramon on last week and we had been planning on running that horse in the mile. And it looked like wise Dan was just unbeatable. And everybody thought that little Mike was just a mile and they said he got lucky going to mount a quarter and I liked a million they let us go. And Carlo and I talked about it today before and she said, we have got to go into mile and a half inch we'd be on the lead all the way around, I thought. And then you get to form, and there's two speed horses in the race. We can't get in front of them, but where we need to be and win. So the paddock we told her most to just sit there, act like you're on the lead. They'll collapse in front of you. You don't inherit the lead at the 8th pole and just ride your ass off to the wire. And that's exactly how it happened. And Ramon that has to be the secret to race of his career. I know it's the biggest race you ever won. But how many people could have gotten that horse to shut off and train and run away he did like ramone did. So fast forward a few years later, amongst retired and bad Hall of Fame, great jockeys, Sarah toga. And I see him in the parking lot when I came out. He's all excited like a kid in the candy store, so you won't believe what I was just doing. So I was talking to Georgia Velasquez and lafitte pink guy and angel Cordero. We were all over there talking. And I sento Vasquez. I said, so why don't you realize you were ever been as good? If not better than ever one of them. And you know, Ramona always collects it. He took a minute. He looked at me. He said, I think you're biased because we did something special together. In true ramone fashion. It's really remote fashion. You know, that this business in this sport is giving me a chance to do a lot of special things. But that's one of the most special. All right, we go north of the border for our next caller that's Lou in Toronto Lou. Go ahead. You're on the phone with Dell Romans. Hey, Gail. Hi, Mike. I want to welcome both.

"You mentioned, you know, horse racing, you're going to see what evil knievel must have just shown up on the side. What happens with what in racing this year, what people are going to remember, all the bad stuff, because that comes out. I mean, you look at the Medina Spirit situation. Now when Medina at the Derby, that when he passed away, and then when finally when the hori and Navarro gets 5 years, that's another black guy to raise the people. Remember that. But you know, there were so many good stories in racing this year. I mean, Steve asked me since becoming the all time winningest trainer Todd pleasure going into the Hall of Fame. Joelle Rosario with the fantastic year that he had with those 49 graded stakes wins in the $33 million in purchases. And he should win the eclipse award, which is long and overdue for him. I mean, those are the things I would like to have people remember, but unfortunately, they're going to remember the bad stuff. And maybe that's just the way our society is. They're always trying to focus more on the negative than the positive. And if that was my new year's resolution, I would say, let's focus more on positive stuff and racing rather than the negative, because there is a lot of positive things that go on in this game and there's a lot of people that work really, really hard and for them to have to be swallowed up in the negative is just unfair and to my opinion and bad for racism. You know, I just want to be del Romans in 2022. I want to be able to do this show from the beach. There you go. That's a good resolution because, hey, life is good. You're on the beach. You're on the beach right now? Yeah, and a motorcycle just went ripping down a one 80. So aren't you doing no training today? Today no, we're done. I get done. I get there at 4 o'clock tomorrow morning, get done early. So now you're out fishing. No, no. I'm sitting here having a juice at Miami squeezed. I'm telling you one thing. Dale Roman lives the right of the life of Romans. That's my new year's resolution. Like a billionaire my entire life, even though I'm busted. That is my new year's resolution. To be more like Dale Romans. There you go. You'll have fun. So you have champagne ideas, but Pepsi Cola pockets? Exactly, but I wanted to champagne anyway. All right, final topic, and this is that segment that we included a couple of weeks ago, people enjoyed it, so I'm going to bring it back again. Your winner of the week and who are you claiming foul against in racing this past week? I know you guys went easy on the claiming foul part before Christmas to be nice to the industry for Christmas. But who's your winner of the week and who would you claim foul against in racing this past week and Timmy, I'll let you kick it off. Well, my winner of the.

"Well, you know, I always say, and I've said this for years in January, I've always say we haven't even seen you. We might not have even seen the Derby winner yet. I mean, you know, these horses are these horses you mentioned, you know, that are leading the standings. I would think Jack Christopher, who was so hyped after winning the champagne, but then he had to miss the breeders cup and Ted Brown. You know, he's got he's got a horse that a lot of people thought was the best two year old heading into the heading into the juvenile. I would put him on that list, but you know, it's so so early. I mean, if someone put a gun to my head and said, which one of these horses do you think will be in the starting aid that turns your doll? I said, well, you better pull the trigger. So that's your any of them. I mean, it's just, again, it's just so early. And I mean, remember, remember 2018, we hadn't even heard it really justify yet. So I'm going to say it's too early to say that any of these guys are going to be the starting game 'cause I don't want to say yeah this horse will definitely be the starting gate, and then we don't see them again ever. How about you? What do you think? That'd be my pick. I was impressed with him. I've watched him train all the time he's in the bar next to me up and Kentucky's in the park next to me now, but he's a very talented horse. And one thing we know for sure, if he does stay on the Derby trail, he'll be the most hyped horse because he'll be an ever unhappy commercial on TV. Yeah, he'll be the poster child. He will be well known. We'll say that. All right, topic number four. And this guy is a two part question. What will racing be most remembered for in 2021? And if you're speaking on behalf of the racing industry, what is your new year's resolution as we begin 2022? Dale? Mine's easy. No bad test in any big races. I'm so sorry, all the best clear, no controversies. What do you think the sport will be most remembered for in 2021? Derby, bad chess? No doubt. Yeah, it's been the dominating story of the entire season and unfortunately it's going to hang a cloud over racing for a little bit. Hopefully we can get past that moving into 2022, but is Dale said no more bad tests, no more positives coming into 22 would be a great new year's resolution. Look at that. Timmy, how about you? Well yeah, obviously unfortunately.

"Turn race and he had dominated the competition and the greatest stakes race that was around two turns, would your answer be different to him being the best horse in the country right now? I don't know how my could be any different. I think he's the best source out there. He could have walked off another quarter of a mile. They're not getting to him. Yeah. If you want to go to two terms, it's not a problem for this one. He's just going to win by more. He's so efficient moving when you're watching run in such a specimen so you stand there. I remember him when they bought him a yearling sale. And John's right, he could go down in history as a historic course and also as a horse that we need the bloodline of. That could just change the bloodlines altogether. When you got a spectacular horse like this, it has some looks of this and confirmation of the source. And on top of it, the pure natural talent that goes along with it. I mean, no telling what history will show. I mean, years, 30 years down the road from now. We might be seeing his sons be the great producers and very talented horses. And the thing, too with him, with what he's done so far, does he keep having to raise the bar? If his next race, he only wins by 9, is that a failure in people's eyes because they expect him to dominate by 30 lengths the next time he runs? I mean, they'll be pressure on this horse, but he might, he just might be that good that he could just keep doing stuff like this and turn heads for the rest of the year. The other day when he went out there. And that's exactly what I told him. I said, listen, because he was nervous. So since George doesn't have to win about ten and a grade one against a breeder's cup play stores. If he wins he wins, and then he just he did it anyway. He just did it anyway. Just galloped around there. It's amazing. Yep. Yeah, there's no doubt about it. He's ultra talented. We'll see where this goes going into this year here in 2022. All right, next topic. Beginning of the show, I welcome Jackie Javier castellano to the program. And let's face it, he was once the jockey to beat when racing shifted to Gulfstream park for the championship meet each year. But the Hall of Famer who once tallied 5 consecutive writing titles in South Florida has seen his win totals declined every year since winning 344 races in 2015. He says he's determined. He says he wants to get back to the top this year. Guys does Javier castellano have one more big season in him. Dale? He's got as many as he wants to have. I think he should retool his career to a Mike Smith. He's a great, great writer. And he could prove when everything is he doesn't need to win 350 races. He needs when he races. And I would take him in any grade one race in the country if we were going to battle and I would feel very confident with heavier on my horse. Timmy. Yeah. You know, how about 44 years old now? I mean, last year he was derailed with a hip, he had the hip surgery last year that he didn't come back to Gulfstream until mid February. And you know, you get older, you're not going to be able to do what you've always done. I mean, you look at what I read is done, you know, how young he is. You know, getting nearly 500 mounts at if the Gulfstream meat hobbies get in 2020 at like a hundred and 60. I mean, he's got a Dale said. You know, he said that point in his career. He doesn't have anything to prove. He wants to eat each and be able to just go out there and pick his spots, get try to get the big horse for the year, get a good three year old and just Johnny V's done the same thing, even though now he's out in California, you know, riding basically exclusively for Bob Baffert. But you know, hobby doesn't have anything to prove to anybody. I mean he's done that he's in the Hall of Fame. I mean he's he's one of the most Travers stakes. He's his resume is long and impressive. I don't think he harbors ambition of being the leading writer at Gulfstream, but he will be competitive and you know he can still ride and there's no doubt about that. You know, he's fully healthy now. Let's see what he can do, but I don't think he's that kind of guy that has to walk ride ten races a day. Yeah, one thing he mentioned during that conversation was trying to keep up and compete with the new generation of riders. Guys like Ira Ortiz and Jose Ortiz and some of the top jockeys that are younger than him. And as you said, he's 44. He's not he's not an old man, but in terms of jockey standings he's he's 44. He's not as young as he used to be. Dale do you still see Javier? I know you said you're confident in him in any big races. He's still a guy that can compete with the younger guys day in and day out. Oh yeah, he's an athlete takes care of himself don't have any bad habits. He's good. And he's actually like, you don't have to worry about it. I don't believe by starving any of that stuff. That's a lot of things. Jockey's careers. I think that he's helping now. He feels good. And you'll see, he'll come back swing it. And you just look what Mike Smith 56. I mean, you could have ten more good years. Fixes his career right in just decides he's going to stick on the big horses and hopefully it gets one and gets him going again. That's a good point. All right, topic number three, and it involves The Kentucky Derby because let's face it, it's never too early to start talking Derby. We've done it a couple of times in this segment last year. It's still a 126 days away. It'll be here before we know it. But the road to the Derby starts to heat up later today with the Derby points races that are set to be contested at Oakland at aqueduct in Santa Anita. If the Derby were run today, here's how the standings look. The top 5 horses in the standings would be papa cap, rattle and roll, Jack Christopher, make it big and smile happy. My question to you guys is which of those Derby hopefuls are most likely to find themselves in the starting gate on the first Saturday in May Timmy?.

"Dominant victory welcome to this week's edition of I ask they answer with trainer Dell Romans and turf writer. Tim wilkin a New Year's Day edition of the segment Dale and Tim are with me now. Guys, happy new year to both of you. Happy new year. Hopefully it's a good one this year. Where did Christmas go where new year's already? Yeah, stand it. So true. We'll listen to flight line provided a great Christmas gift for his connections with that huge win in the Malibu last week. He's a three year old and he put on another show at Santa Anita. He's undefeated now. He remained perfect with that brilliant performance. It is now, let's see. He's won by 11 and a half lengths in the Malibu. He won by 12 previously in 13 his debut. That's remarkable. He's yet to race further than 7 furlongs and obviously not tried two turns yet, but that victory in the Malibu had everybody buzzing is flight line. The best horse in the country right now and Timmy I'll let you kick it off. Wow. That's a loaded heavy statement to say it's the best tors in the country right now. I would say no, but you know, to win his first three by combining 37 and a half lengths, I mean, you know, people are buzzing all throughout the industry about. I talked to tariff thinly from West Point yesterday and the thing he said he goes, you dream of being attached to a horse like this. I mean, he is not done anything wrong. He's got to be the most hyped horse, the game is seen in a long time and Dale knows all about hyped horse. He had one just a couple of years ago and Dennis's moment. I mean, it's one thing to have him, but to keep him doing what they've done so far. I mean, this is, I mean, right now, you know, there's a preliminary schedule out for him that the main goal for the springtime, I think is the Matt mile. I'm sure he'll run once before then. Selfishly, I'd like to see him run at Saratoga but I don't think that'll happen because the California people and he's gonna probably go to the Pacific classic and then the breeders cup. But, you know, right now, horse racing needs a horse like this because, you know, face it. The average fan gets all jacked up and excited about the Triple Crown. To have a horse like this, an older horse coming in to January. I think is only going to make the sport so much more alluring to some people. I mean, John Sadler said, before this horse is all done, he said he might be a quote historic course before it's all done. Those are heavy statements to make. And you know, God, I hope he does continue to do what he's doing, but, you know, where do you set the bar on this now when the horse is won by those kind of lengths, leaving into his four year old season? I mean, he has done it so easily. So heck yeah, I mean, I think he's got a horse with loads of potential, but I wouldn't, I wouldn't call him the best horse in training right now. I mean, I don't think that people would want to see him. I don't think it would be fair to the horse if you were to line up against the likes of Nick's go and life is good in the Pegasus, which is obviously not going to happen. Dale, what do you think? Well, best horse is a loaded question. I mean, best at what my mind is the most talented horse in the country in training right now and there's one of the most talented I've ever seen. He's a wow your horse. I mean, when he got to the court, you know, they were still in the hunt behind him, and he just drew off with every stride. And those horses are rare. I mean, reminds me of the Washington video of Danzig. When he won his first three races, the way he did it. He wasn't able to go on. And he didn't even do it in a state. This horse did it in a grade one against the horse that ran second in the breeders cup sprint. And just beat up on him like he was a 15 maiden in there. It was amazing to me. And I think it's been really fun to watch the way John handled the source. It's been very interesting. I'm sure he's dealing with some stuff, then he's got a handling the right way. And he's done it. I mean, it's a space horse and be that patient. I know it's supposed to have a little port of crack at something at del mar mister race, but it's gonna be interesting to handling the rest of the year if he stays together. I mean, and I think you'll go online and say he will be the best horse in training on February 1st. Because the other two will probably retire. And go to stud, but he has that are left out there, but I mean, to watch what he did, Terry's one of my closest friends. So I've known about this horse way before he ever ran. And I've been watching him very close and watching the way that Hanley and I think it's been a fun for me as a racing fan to sit back and watch it. And this question, Tim, grab this real quick. Yeah, go ahead. You know, the fact that he didn't run early in three year old season because of injury. You know, if he were to run in the Triple Crown races, we wouldn't be seeing him as a four year old. I mean, I'm sure if he would have done what going on to big things during The Crown races he'd be retired by now. So it's great for the game that this horse is going to be around to be able to watch him run and see what he does as a four year old. Yeah, let me ask you guys this question. If that Malibu win had been a two turn race and he had dominated the competition and the greatest stakes race that was around two turns, would your answer be different to him being the best horse in the country right now?.

Post Time: Fountain of Youth is leap day for Derby hopefuls

"Happy Fountain of Youth Day. Thank you thank you starting early today for so eleven. Thirty fourteen racist today so should be a good one. I don't know if people think chancellor card yet but I mean it's just stacked start to finish so we're we're gearing up for a day. How's the weather down there today? Good conditions it's great It was very breezy and on the chilly side yesterday. Obviously not Florida are rolling their eyes at US saying that it's cool but it feels different when it gets colder down in Florida will definitely say that. But it's gorgeous. Today it's going to be low. Seventies son is out a little bit less windy than yesterday as well. Let's start with the Fountain of Youth. That will be the final of the fourteen races on this Saturday program. Twelve horses are entered. There was some conversation about chance it potentially coming out because of the outside post position As of just a little bit ago I think he is still in so some decisions yet to be made but twelve horses set to go. How did you see this one? Yeah he is still and he does have until forty five minutes before the race as is the protocol for Great. It's so he's got some time There was one scratch just of the number two horse in there but This is a tough race chance. It's been really impressive. And Ultra talented and and obviously Fun Horse to watch down here but I did go with the Horse. That actually finished second to him in the Home Watch. Oh man and that is as you know on. Tv For Kelly Brian. I just thought that this course who I had not actually seen him physically before leading into that last race and he really showed me. Both in the flesh needs performance that he was the type that could handle the stroud and distance effectively. I think he's drawn well and he's going to be really tough. Obviously done this moment. It's going to take a lot of attention. Chance it as well and those are some good horses but I'm GonNa land on as seen on TV seen on. Tv Ninety two on the morning line has been extremely consistent. You mentioned the forest arts. Two wins two seconds and that runner up in the mutual macho man last time to to under pokka. Lopez here this afternoon. I'd like to spend more time talking with you about some of the other contenders but in the interest of time here this morning. Let's move on to the race. For the three year old girls we don't want to neglect the phillies The Dow is race number ten one mile on the main track. It will go right around that four o'clock eastern time. Yeah this is an exciting race. You've got tunnel shape city outside Saffy. Joseph's junior has obviously really burst onto the scene this year with the likes of math wizard and then of course potential Derby contender and Chan said and he's also got affiliate that Again is undefeated and turned out to be the first graded stakes winner for Tony. Lists and sire and she even though she's been so impressive it does kind of feel like even in this race that she still has a little something to prove. It'll be interesting I think that the race really revolves around the todd. Pletcher Philly in spices nice. I mean she was just a monster in her debut and I spoke to todd yesterday and he said that she was the phillies but they obviously really had high hopes for given the purchase price and her breathing out of the Dorsey and she not only showed up in her debut. But I watch pretty much all of her recent workouts at Palm Beach downs and I spoke to todd about this too and that she's been training for the most part with some of the really highly touted colts and his part including the point. Who was really well tipped out market analysis. Just some very talented horses. That have won first time out. And she's been training with the colts. A Lotta Sense. Kinda dwarfs inside too. She's a very very big Philly but she has a nice way of moving and they taught it said that was a way of them kind of testing. Just how good is she? And she's really responded to retest. Yeah that I start. She dominated her maiden race on January twelve. She won by twelve ran away from the field. That probably could have been more if they wanted it to be. That was at the same one mile distances. Today's Dimona del Was there a obviously? She was the favourite that day ACACIA but was a palpable buzz around spices. Nice when she walked into the paddock that day there was and you know she would not necessarily be the type of horse that I would pick out in a lineup Just face off of you know looks for a Horse. That would win first. Came out like I said. She's very big she by curl and She has kind of a long stride along next to her and I thought that she was going to win. But I was almost wondering puts. You need a race which you need to turn. And she's just so talented that she was almost kind of able to overcome. Maybe not looking like the precocious sharp I out type of winter so I thought that was really interesting as well. And and obviously this is going to be a tougher spot going right into graded stakes company but think that she is really one of the box. Office potential superstars on the undercard today. And I'm excited to see her. I also use underneath though in Second. I use five reluctant bride. Who I think is good and I like her switching to stay. She's got dirt pedigree and I spoke to Patrick the cone the other day and he said he tries a lot of his horses that he thinks are good. On the turf I F. A. Indian and sold allante being perfect examples and He says he thinks it's an easier trip. And then you switch them to dirt and that just might be where they're most comfortable and that's what he's doing with this one today who just closed so impressively in her first race. And I think that she's got some ability to talking with ACACIA. Courtney from Gulfstream Park here on the Horse Racing Radio Network Again Fountain of Youth Day Fourteen races. We have time to look at one more case you have about a minute or so. Just over that for we have to get to the next segment The Gulfstream Park Mile is race number. Twelve another big field. Eleven horses entered one mile on the main track. And this is a very interesting race gear. Mclaughlin had to including Hi Collin true. Kimber I really like hike. Second also layoff. I think he's GonNa be a big improvement for him today. And I think that it's kind of always flies under the radar is how Creek Hustle. He's actually my top picks some paddock school the other day for Vicki Foley. I think he's actually going seven furlongs. One Turn My. Oh which is what he gets today. just a side note. It's the treat to see Pegasus World Cup runner up MR freeze back. And he'll turn back and distance as well for for Dale Romans who could potentially have a big day. Yeah it could be a huge day for Dale and ACACIA. Has a very busy day ahead of her. So we'll let her go. Acacias squeezed me in this morning. I appreciate you taking a few minutes. Go enjoy the rest of the day and we'll talk soon. Thanks for being here all right. Thanks guys take care. She's the best Acacia Courtney. The little a here on the horse racing radio network do miss having her with us on the network but she's doing good things down there Gulfstream and on some of the other national. Tv

Three Wins in 4 Years Is a Record

"James Good Morning. Good Morning Steve. Thanks for having me on hope your weekend. Well it did. It did and I thought I saved I wrote I write down as many selections. It's always tough for Breeders Cup because then the paper gets all gets a little a little sloppy and sure enough here. I'm looking now and yeah I do have it. Actually there we go there we go home. You were a Vino guy and and bricks and mortar and and then spun to run so yeah your share of winners Too Key around I thought was on higher power. Though I didn't have you know I got you written down for Dino. I took higher power stirred Flavian Pratt. What's up on them? I'll tell you play the Heidi wrote one favorite Donna Duluth below she. The brewers Juke juvenile given up Phillies runner-up but he had a win. had four seconds and fourth earners. I thought that was a really a great performance by him and You know he has the Kentucky Derby win on his resume junkies like have that really just A good showcase for an upcoming star in our rank agreed and and I tweeted on Sunday. I've discussed this a couple of times this week. His record is stunning. And he's got people would say. Oh He's only got three wins. WHOA WHOA three wins? Thirty eight mounts and this is only his fourth year as fourth year riding his sixteen seventeen eighteen nineteen at-bats. Ah But another fourteen in the money finishes and then a handful of fourths and fifths I mean the percentage is frightening. I mean considering considering the level of competition really outstanding and he gives he gives every virtually every horse. If he's got horse to work with he gives them a chance. It's definitely and you know I mean I think Santa Anita and hosted the Breeders Cup eight times previously and and and he was writing a lot of california-based debased horses and one of my takeaways was definitely that this this year's Breeders Cup with completely unlike any out in California before I mean just uh-huh it just. It really started on Friday where the first four winners had all raised it Aqueduct Belmont and by the end of it I'm you know I'm looking at it it it. If you'd looked at the charts that Saturday at at Saratoga you wouldn't be surprised to see our ad or ts in four races Castellano and Rosario win into each and then Jose or ts Manny Frank Ricardo Santana All winner races well and Joe Bravo and that's what happened. They took twelve to fourteen races and and all twelve of those horses that race in New York this year now very strong on that on that front and ah not to say that Just had the conversation with Nick. Lock about the euro's and there were there were solid efforts and solid board hits in addition to Iridescence win but The you know the and there were solid performances from west coast sources to bell. Athena's Bella Fina. At under under certain circumstances dances might have won. The united almost looked like a winner hundred yards from the wire There were there were plenty of of solid performances from every region In some cases. Look at Vino. Vino having been into California. I think counselor a lot. You fold in folding would ask. Did you know getting there early with Matali Actually Navarro to I mean in Navarro got there early with a chance. A Lot A lot of times the a Lotta Times. The juvenile turf sprang can be like locally based sources can do all your top two in that race were both based in California with Peter Miller and you the one hundred and thirty five bucks. That's right that's right. That's right his second his second in the race in three years. I'm just looking at the list to spun to run from Philadelphia. So you get you get a a regional kind of a B.. Track player are sharing sharing holiday for new. New York's thunder run actually ran in a mate. Nice at act backer. And the winner but I mean the parks and mom Sharing base at Far Hills at far hell and Maryland bred. That's a couple of times Toga. Yeah yeah everybody everybody got their Lixin. Actually when you when you kind of go through this And I'll just say I I came away. I mean granted. I thought the four big stars coming into enforces with the serious horsey. Our aspirations Bricks Mourner Corner Sister Charlie and Matola two of the four one I think it really does come down horse a year two bricks and mortar and Matola Louis. But I'm giving the edge bricks mortar. I thought it was fantastic campaign. He had been a mile or previously. Before you know getting hurt and undergoing that surgery and I like the fact that Brad Cox I mean Brown ran him. You know he never ran he. Random and six different courses six different states. You went from Florida to Louisiana to Kentucky Hockey to New York to Illinois and the California To win a mile and a half for the first time in his career so to me. He's a deserving of the year well and and driving home the point about the mile and a half for people that because they always beat all the same types and didn't stretch himself then no he did and and you know the there was even people that were incredulous about him going the mile and a half so you know that that score extra points Without a doubt yeah definitely and you know to me One of the Mike Smith that made the point After a couple Oh. He ran second on a pair of privet favorites midnight zoo in Omaha Beach. And he's made the point that he'd right like those races back because it was hard to 'cause over that track track but to me it was more so that those horses were caned on the rail going into the first turn. Blue Prize was tenth early. You know tolley Holy Arosa could be five or six minutes off the pace. But they're jocks really at. That did a great job keeping them in the clear and I really thought midnight. These to you You know continue just to be in traffic through into the far turn. And when she got out she finished great as a case I mean they the great job on on TV and other highlighting it where I think of a blueprint. It's got the jump on her because of the trip the greed and it and it it also. It should be noted for people that are you know insisting that the track nobody could close well. WHOA that's not true? which is simply me? Just look at the chart for the distaff. What do you mean nobody could close at that? Just you know Omaha. Beach closed closed In in as well came from often and others whitmore made up. I mean it wasn't going to get to the winners and the the exact pair But he closed Idiom really had down below chicken that juvenile fillies and that's when the track was absolutely at its worst deepest pissed most impossible right based on based on the figure and in fact. It's funny because yesterday. Paul Matisse was talking about how difficult Friday was to make figures and then it was echoed by Jerry Brown on His On his experts board board. Somebody brought up. Paul's conversation and Jerry also echoed that the way the track changed from the you know the middle part of the day to by the time even the the juvenile boys ran so typically you would if the juvenile of the males run more than two seconds faster than the phillies. You'll get say their way better than the nose Philly but I do think it was. It was a track getting off faster later. And I. I'm I'm not down on British idiom or Donna Boise at all even though that right they came home. I think they should be still terrific runners. And you know it's it's hard to gauge coming out of the juvenile being real adobe guy Exactly what that means going forward so into court definitely Nice Horse Court Vision You know hasn't isn't had much success at Stud but he's bread You know fire. Classic types with that pedigree of his female family has a lot of stamina influences. It just doesn't have much class. You won't find any stakes winners really in that immediate female family well your final the final takeaways. My final take away so I just you know I you know I was. I thought you know it was a tragic end McGowan crew. I mean it was just a Really hurt to see that happy at the very end After a thirteen of the Breeders Cup races have that happened in the ashtray and and racing. Definitely I think has some issues and concerns going forward. the people in the industry maybe do a better job messaging but I still remain. Optimistic is the horserace fan about the future and I was. I came away like in the Breeders Cup. I thought there was some great performances and Looking for work once again the next year very good well. We're looking forward to the action this weekend give us some thoughts about Churchill had terrific card even today yesterday and Wednesday were good and of course the Commonwealth on Saturday the feature the Grade Three Mile and a sixteenth. The three year olds on the grass. It is an absolute war. Some thoughts about what's been going on while everybody was paying attention to Breeders Cup and and we got to look forward to this weekend. Yeah they had three stakes last week and In the MEA mischief flatmate go for the sale and and look good. She loves Churchill Downs Multiple Grade. One winner there in the Divine Queen got off to bad start. Art Never Fire in the In Saturday stakes chill Lewke and Sally's Kirwin breakers Swin She tried the Indiana Oaks folks earlier. This year didn't run good for Dale Romans. But she had one or last two allowance races by like about fifteen lenz combined and ran a rug. Good Rice debris greet Brian Cox's
