"They're usually the stuff of bar room gossip or junior high school sleepovers. We bring them up to entertain or titillate one another. They are cautionary tales and lessons in safety, morality and consequences to be invoked when we need to be reminded in a creepy fun way. That the night is dark and full of terrors. And then, in the light of day, we leave them behind and move on with our lives. Usually. But one town has decided to embrace its urban legend and turn it into their main calling card. It's a bold move considering their urban legend is a giant moth like being with glowing red eyes who will eat you. If you're in the wrong place at the wrong time. Not my idea of a selling point, but hey, town councils everywhere, you do you. Welcome to strange and unexplained with me. Daisy Egan, I'm a writer and an actor who bases all of my vacation destinations on what the food is like. So making the main draw of your town a person sized bug. I mean, but is there any good Mexican or Thai food? But after decades of being dogged by rumors, the people of point pleasant West Virginia, much like the powers that be at the Denver International Airport figured, if you can't beat them, join them. And they leaned in to the legend that has shrouded their town for 40 plus years. Their stands an unusual piece of public art, gracing a medium in the center of town. A shining,.

"If a twisted monster of a man abducts a child in 1972, what kind of storm can we expect to make landfall later? How many lives will be destroyed by that storm? What kind of forces are at play when a family has two of its children consumed by noxious, unspeakable violence. One as the victim and one is the perpetrator. Welcome to strange and unexplained with me, daisy Egan, I'm a writer and an actor who often looks around at the world and says nope and takes a nap instead. This podcast isn't making it any easier. This week, part two of the stainer brothers saga, Carrie stayner. In last week's episode, a butterfly flapped its wings when a 7 year old Steven stayner was abducted in 1972, held for almost 8 years and escaped, saving another young boy in the process. If that doesn't make any sense, go back and listen to last week's episode. Before we jump in, I want to give you a quick warning that this episode deals with some pretty graphic violence. As per usual, I don't go into too much detail, but there is some mention of some horrific stuff. Please take care while listening. In this episode, part two of the stainer saga that history ripples into an unexpected storm. Steven's older brother Carey will wind up speeding down a very dark road set off in part at least. By Stephen's.

Who Killed Lois Duncan's Daughter: The Murder of Kaitlyn Arquette

"Lowest. Dunkin would receive a phone call. That would change her life forever. Caitlyn had been shot twice in the head while driving near downtown albuquerque and was in the hospital in critical condition less than twenty four hours later. Caitlin was dead and lois duncan found herself. Living the kind of nightmare. She had devoted her life to writing about. Lois would spend the next three decades trying unsuccessfully to unravel the mystery of her daughter's murder. Here's what we know about the crime around eleven pm on july sixteenth. A plainclothes detective drove by a car. That had hit a pole off the side of the road. On the corner of lomas east broadway near downtown albuquerque. There was a vw bug. Stop next to it. He saw no one at the site of the crash so he kept driving. I'm sorry what. How is it crashed car and another one right next to it at eleven o'clock at night not cause to stop an investigate. Common sense finally kicked in and the officer radioed end to see if the crash had been reported yet it hadn't so he decided to turn around and see. If i don't know a citizen might need help. By the time he got back to the scene of the crash the vw was gone. Oops am i right instead of the vw. Now some random guy was standing near the crash car when the detective asked what he was doing there. He said he just happened to be passing by turns out the reason. The officer didn't see anyone in the crashed car when he drove by without bothering to stop was because the driver had been shot twice in the head and was slumped over the wheel and she was still alive. This was kaitlyn arquette. Lois duncan's eighteen year old daughter.

What Lurks Beneath: The Legend of the Loch Ness Monster

"The modern day fascination with old nasty started in nineteen thirty three when aldy mckay and her husband were driving along loch ness and we all know that lock is scottish for lake right so they were driving along the loc when less than a mile out in the water. Algae mckay reported seeing a tremendous upheaval on the lock which previously had been a calm as a proverbial mill pond. That was my scottish accent. Mckay said she saw what she thought looked like the body of some huge creature resembling awale rolling and diving churning the water into a bubbling foam. The creature was large enough that when it took its final dive under the water sent out huge waves. Mckay and her husband stayed on the road for half an hour waiting to see if they would spot whatever it was again. But in that time it never resurfaced the only paper that ran a story about the mckay. Strange encounter was the inverness. Corier other than that. No one seemed very interested less than three months later married. Couple mr and mrs spicer. We're driving south along loch mess. When they claim to see a huge prehistoric creature. Cross the road in front of them headed toward the lake according to an interview. The spicer's gave to rupert gould. Who wrote the first book about the loch ness monster. The creature had a long neck and a low thick body about four or five feet high. Mr spicer said he couldn't see legs or tail but he did see something flopping up and down which he later thought was a tail curled around toward the front of the animal. The couple said they couldn't tell if they're creature entered the water because their view was obstructed. And they couldn't hear anything over the sound of their engine. The author gould however claimed to have been watching the lake the same day. The spicer's say they witnessed this thing cross the road and he confirmed that the water was particularly choppy and noisy at roughly location. The spicer's claim they saw the animal. Gould went into the interview skeptical but based on their description and a drawing. Mr spicer made he came out. Short that the spicer's were telling the truth and had in fact seen the loch ness monster.

"One of the first stories that got people talking about crop circles began one morning in january nineteen sixty six when banana farmer george pedley entirely a town in north queensland australia was driving his tractor through his farm passed a lagoon. George hurt a high pitched hissing. Sound assuming it was a pierce tire. He stopped the tractor to check but immediately saw what he later described as a flying saucer. Rise up at great speed from the lagoon and sip away disappearing into a cloud of blue vapor after registering his complete shock. He went to investigate the site from which he saw the object rise there in the lagoon. George found what looked almost like a massive nest of flattened reads fused together floating on the surface of the water spinning clockwise. It was almost thirty feet across later in the day. George called his friend albert to check it out. It seems to me if you see a flying saucer and a floating nest from where it took off you call someone immediately but george was like. Wow i just saw. Ufo oh well. These bananas are gonna pick themselves. Maybe he was a man who has priorities in order one harvest bananas to call friend about ufo citing when albert got to the lagoon. He waited out in to get a closer look and notice that the reads weren't just bent over but rather it looked like they'd been pulled up by their roots at this point. One of the men alerted the media. I'm guessing it was albert since george seemed to be taking a slightly more lazy fair approach to the whole thing when the local press arrived to more smaller circles were found in one. The reads went clockwise. Counterclockwise also found was a six by five foot rectangle of empty space in the reeds where the reads it seemingly been pulled up from their roots and were missing completely

Unraveling The Death of 'The Toxic Lady', Gloria Ramirez

"When she got to the hospital. Glorious heart was beating at a rate of more than one hundred beats per minute. Why did they need to fibrillation her. That seems like jumpstarting a car. That's already running hot. You know also. It just seems to me that pumping someone full of sedatives and then zapping. Their heart with electricity is a weird sequence of events. I'm sure they knew what they were doing. It's just as a lay person sitting here at my desk. It seems weird also can only hope the iv. The paramedics administered in the ambulance was to take blood because by the time nurse. Cain went to get a blood sample. Gloria was so hopped up on medical grade goof-balls that her blood probably would have gotten anyone within fifteen feet of it high. Wouldn't they wanna check someone's blood before dumping a whole bunch of shed into it like maybe make sure she didn't already take a bottle full of valium before giving her more valium next. Let me just ask why. The decision was to move the entire. Er to the parking lot. If dr our cia thought gloria was the problem why not just move gloria outside. Wouldn't that have been easier than moving the entire er department it's possible. Show a thought. The problem was coming from the er itself like the ventilation system or whatever but then. Why didn't gloria get evacuated as well and look. I'm sure dr ocho made whatever decisions he thought were best in the moment. I can't think straight under that kind of pressure which is why dr ochoa is a doctor. And i am a podcast art. Could you imagine getting rushed to the er for like i dunno hemorrhaging blood or something. The ambulance gets to the parking lot out front. And it's like well here. We are literally right here. And there's just rows of gurneys with moaning people and some doctors like who's nissan altima is this. I'm hanging an. Iv bag from the roof rack. The official cause of gloria ramirez death was kidney failure due to cervical cancer or possibly heart failure. I'm telling you the reporting on this case is all over the place. Whatever it was that ultimately killed her. Everyone was still trying to figure out what it could have possibly been about. Gloria that was making medical staff around her pass out.

Is Time Travel Possible? Stories About Potential Time Travelers

"In july of nineteen. Fifty four as passengers filed through customs at tokyo international airport. A middle aged white man stepped up to a customs agent and handed over his documents. His passport from the country of torrid looked official enough if slightly different than other countries passports had to stamps from japan from that year alone showing that this was his third trip to the country. Despite that the customs agent was like Torrid and the man was like yep or whatever the japanese equivalent of yup is. Apparently he spoke japanese french and a few other languages and the customs agent was like I've never heard torrid whereas it and the man was like. What do you mean. You've never heard of torah. It is gone tree. Ask two point two tore it on a map. However the man pointed to a country between france and spain called andorra and was genuinely confused. He said he had no idea what andorra was and that his country of torre had a rich one thousand year old history for further proof. The man pulled out his checkbook but the customs official who had now gotten involved trying to sort out. The situation couldn't find bank matching the name of the bank of the checks. He was also carrying currency for many different countries. Which was what you had to do back before. Debit cards are bitcoin. Or whatever the kids are using these days which at least indicated that he did indeed travel internationally a lot so now this guy is starting to seem pretty suspicious walking around with checks from a non existent bank and a nonexistent country. The customs people were like okay. If you're here on business what company you work for the man happily provided the name of the company he worked for but when officials called the company they learned that while it did have a branch in japan. it didn't have one in torrid. It also had no record of this man either working for them or having an appointment with anyone in the company.

"Don't sugarcoat your notes and that's not to say to be gruff in unfriendly. I think you'll see as we talk more about this new always believe in kind of an underlying kindness to all of the notes that were giving but overall most of us this have time again with the many ways that podcasting came up. This is the kind of thing that you'll really see Kind of people but heads if maybe one is coming from a more journalistic background in one is coming from a more just like kind of artistic background you know. Deadlines are different for people right and so but if we are not being clear and direct with our notes we're usually going to be adding some back and forth that we probably don't have time for so. Just get to the point even if you need to do it in the kindest way

Why You Shouldn't Edit From a Paper Script With Daisy Rosario, Executive Producer at Stitcher

"At it from a paper script. Use your ears now. This doesn't mean that you can't have a paper script available to you especially if what you are editing. Something that is heavily written anyone coming for maybe a more journalistic or narrative background is going to be used to having a script in front of them. If you come from mostly shows maybe less so but what we mean by that is just. Don't go only off the paper script you have to be able to listen to the audio as well And that's for a number of reasons you know you're also listening and audio. We're listening for tone. We're listening for pacing. We are listening for clarity and understanding but also i can tell you from experience. I've got notes from people before where the was very clear that they had only looked at the script. And not listen to the audio. When this happens you'll usually get notes. That are things that are just not even possible right like it might say. Cut the sentence That this person says but you can't cut that sentence if you listen to the audio and realized that the person is taking a breath in the middle or maybe they're speaking up or something about their inflection or the audio quality itself just means that you can't make that cut so when we say don't edit from paper script we mean don't only at it from a paper script that's there but you definitely want to also be checking with your audio. That's the way that our audiences are experiencing our medium.

The Death of Kendrick Johnson

"On the morning of january eleventh. Jackie was at her son. School probably hoping he had just spent the night at a friend's house and his phone died and his friends phone died and his friends. Parents phone died and then all the phones on the block died. Because you would tell yourself anything to not think the worst and then you do whatever you can to find them at eight thirty a. m. jackie was in the school guidance. Counselors office at that same moment in the gym. A student was walking on top of a row of rolled up gym mats that were lined up vertically against the wall. Each matt stood almost seven feet high and three feet across making a sort of makeshift walkway. Why anyone was allowed to walk on a seven foot. High vertical rolled up. Jemat is anyone's guess. But in one of the matt's the students saw what looked like feet wearing hanes socks. She called some friends over and when they saw what she saw. One of them screamed lowndes. High head athletic trainer philip pipe. Low and one of the other coaches ran across the gym. Push the mat over on its side and a male's body tumbled out along with blood and vomit pipe blow-back away. The other coach told the students to leave the job at that moment. Back in the guidance counselors office. The phone rang the volume may have been tad too high because coming from the other end. Jackie could clearly hear someone say. They found a body in the gym. The guidance counselor rushed out of the room and jackie sat there probably frozen in terror because in that moment she just knew that body was the body of her son. Kendrick when police. Ems arrived on the scene. They confirmed that the body and the matt was indeed. That of kendrick. Johnson

"Now i don't happen to have more than one plant at this point in time but as i've looked around and i'm i'm i'm reaching beyond my property at this point to considerably area and that considerable area Where i mentioned my my optics artists. Good as they used to be. I have seen shasta daisies at great distances. There must be in some cases. Twelve to twenty plants. They're standing depending on the variety and there are fifteen different types of of daisies period and and and fifteen different kinds of shasta daisies. And those are the ones that are really showing off right now. I've seen them from eighteen inches tall to they say in the book. Three to four feet. I know some of them might be foot to me now. They are tall. They're holding up with all the rain. The the flower head doesn't catch so much water to bend it totally over and destroy the beauty. And it's just been what i marked down. This morning's plan to the week is daisy's galore there. They're all over the place. Now if you have a given kind daisy that especially is going to hit capable of hitting four feet you can and should have pinched it back early in the season Well till you get into the starter flower buds. Then let it grow and by doing that you can stop four-footer at three or two and a half and it'll be a much heavier bodied plant and so on so we've talked about that kind of thing before but daisies are my plan of the week because they're just everywhere right now. Commercial spots medical buildings One backyard and then all over the place And the reason is only one in my backyard is there is a significant amount of weed in and around where the other one was. Yeah and i a hunch between being maybe a little bit too wet over. Winter and daisy types in general cannot handle extra moisture. No witter Chrysanthemums in etc. They'll just simply rot out..

The Impossible Disappearance of Brian Shaffer

"Brian disappeared on purpose. Theory hinges on the fact that his friend. Clint is seen on camera heading back toward the ugly tuna selena where he claims. He looked for brian in the bathroom. Before rejoining meredith a few minutes later out in front of the bar but unless clinton managed to help pull off an incredibly risky and elaborate disappearance in the span of five minutes. Scenario is unlikely and if. Clint wasn't helping. Brian run away from his life. Why was the only person involved in this whole thing who refused to cooperate with police. Some people close to. Brian have questions about clint brian's brother and his father in law to be have publicly stated that they believe clinton knows more than he's saying even the detective currently working on the case told a reporter and twenty twenty that he believes someone interviewed in the past has withheld information. The detective wouldn't give the name of the person he was talking about. But who could have been other than clint right. And that makes sense. If anybody knows something about brian schafer's disappearance it's clint. He was with brian all night. And he was the last one to see brian. Person according to police clinton's the only person to refuse a polygraph test and almost immediately following the disappearance. Clint lawyered up so what is cling to hide. Maybe nothing maybe. He's just making the legally sound decision on the other hand. Let's say clinton is hiding something. There's two roads that could lead us down. The i is it. Clint is such a loyal friend. That after helping. Brian run away. He put his own security at risk by refusing to tell the police when questioned. The other road is more sinister in this scenario. Clint killed brian or at the very least knows who did

That's another insane fascinating story. If you wanna learn about the four men who literally fought for and won the right for gays to get hammered in public. I strongly suggest you google nyc sip in nineteen sixty six. That shit is bananas and those guys are heroes anyway. Most of the gay bars at the time were owned by the mafia. It's not like the mafia was trying to do something nice for gay people. It was more. Like i don't want them in my house but i'll take their money now. It was just a business opportunity. The mafia knew they could buy basically condemned. Buildings put almost no money into fixing them up and then open them as gay bars. They charge an entry fee to get watered down the drinks and pay off the cops to look the other way. Most of the gay bars were dumps and the stonewall was no exception. There was no fire exit. No running water behind the bar to wash glasses. And the toilets in the bathroom were constantly overflowing but it had a jukebox and it was one of the few places gay people go and dance with each other without being arrested or beat up so they put up with the inconveniences. What other choice did they have. The other to know about these mafia run gay bars is that even though they had these payoff deals in place with the local precincts police raided these bars all the time like once a month for the cops and the mob bosses. It was just part of doing business however for the people caught in the middle of all of this the raids were a nightmare. Anyone without id or really anyone. "Are you afraid of flying. What is it. you're afraid of crashing. Going down in a burning tube of steel. What could be worse. How about being on a plane that just disappears leaving real evidence of its whereabouts behind at all. Welcome to strange and unexplained with me daisy eagan. I'm a writer in an actor who likes to pretend they're too cool for school but who has to take frequent anxiety naps this week. Look up in the sky. It's a bird it's a plane. It was a plane. It's literally not there anymore. it disappeared. Where the hell did that entire airplane go. Have you ever been on a plane when things start to go wrong like the air starts getting bumpy. The captain comes over the intercom and calmly says. There's just a little turbulence and fasten your seat belt now. Imagine if things started to really go wrong you see the flight attendants start to hurry up and down the aisles. It gets really quiet for a minute or two even as the plane bounces up and down. More the oxygen masks down. The flight attendant reminds you that you're cushion is also a flotation device. The cabin starts to smell like smoke. At what point in there to you stop trying to convince yourself that everything is going to be fine and admit to yourself that this might be it. That's what must have been going through the heads of the two hundred thirty six passengers and crew on board malaysian airlines flight. Three seventy on march eighth twenty fourteen. The flight took off from kuala poor at twelve forty one. Am heading to beijing international airport but it never arrived as far as anyone knows. Malaysian airlines flight. The Impossible Disappearance of Brian Shaffer

"At one fifteen. Am the security camera posted outside. The bar caught. Brian clinton meredith riding up the escalator and extensively heading for the ugly tuna celona forty minutes later at one fifty five. Brian can be seen again on the same security camera chatting with a couple of women out side the bar two security guards stand a few feet away most likely getting ready for the bar crowd to leave after last call at two. Am honestly even thinking about being at a bar at two am makes me tired on the security camera footage. Brian can be seen walking toward the entrance of the bar. But the actual entrance of the bar itself is out of frame as the drunken horrid of college. Students poured out of the bar at closing time. Clint and meredith waited outside for bryant. They called him on his cellphone but he didn't pick up in clinton back inside and check the bathroom but he wasn't there. Clinton meredith then made the assumption that brian had already left and hadn't told them folks. Can we please normalize not leaving your friends at bars. Just because you can't get a hold of them like unless they explicitly said you go ahead. I'll stay here and or they're not like incoherently drunk. Don't leave without your friend. Who gave you know warning that they were going somewhere. Well that's not. How clinton and meredith handle the situation. They assumed nothing was wrong and left But the next morning no one had heard from. Brian girlfriend tried calling him. His father tried calling him. He didn't pickup and then on monday morning. Brian was a no show at the airport for his flight. To miami with alexis by this point nobody had heard from him for almost forty eight hours. That's when everyone officially stopped assuming nothing was his family finally called columbus. Police department filed a missing persons report and shortly thereafter. The search for brian schaefer began

Who Killed Yvonne Layne?

"April first. One thousand nine hundred nine twenty. Six year old of on lane was found with her throat. Slashed dead in her home in alliance. Ohio twenty six year old. Yvonne lane a beautiful vivacious woman rebound in a pool of her own blood. Her throat slashed. While her children's slap she was discovered by her mother who had arrived to take her six year old grandchild to kindergarten of was a mother to five kids. David thorne was the father of one of the children although he and a von. We're not together anymore. The murder of a mother of five in her own home stunt the small town of alliance ohio. David had recently been ordered to pay child support and in his confession. Joe said that he was hired by david thorne to kill von so we didn't have to pay the father of one of the children. The motive child support thorne was ordered to pay to the untrained listener. This seems like a pretty clear cut case someone confessing in a good motive but when you start digging and talking to people and going through documents the more complicated things get and it seems like everyone around. A yvonne had a motive to kill her. I i came across the case on the website injustice anywhere which has since become a staple for my research into lesser known conviction cases for my other podcast unjust unsolved. I covered an episode a week telling the stories of people who believed were wrongfully convicted. David was one of them. One of the incredible things to me about. David's case is that it actually unknown there had been other media coverage before the attack grabbed headlines as police hunt for a killer. Dwayne poelman who you just heard in. The previous clips is an investigative journalist. Who looked into the case for three years and at the center of his investigation. Very serious question. Did the system convict the wrong man. However that was over a decade ago. And there's been no movement since i said in david's episode of unjust unsolved that this case deserves its own long-form investigation nachos twenty minutes or forty minutes. So here we are.
