As the end of nineteen seventy three approached people around the world turned their eyes to the sky for months they'd been eagerly awaiting the comet of the century which was supposed to be bright enough to be seen even in full daylight becoming comic who TEK SPAWN NONSTOP. News coverage exclusive stargazing parties and merchandise. It seemed everyone was trying to capitalize on the once in a lifetime event for most the spectacle just amounted to fund novelty or a quick money making opportunity but for David Berg founder of the family international the comet heralded the end of days according to him. The astral anomaly was just one of the many signs that the rapture would soon come. He urged his followers to retreat to underground bunkers and prepare for an end. Which never came. Hi I'm Vanessa. Richardson and this is colts. A podcast original. This is the seventeenth episode in our Daily Series on the strange prophecies made by different cults and their leaders throughout this month. Were taking a daily look at the myriad of apocalyptic predictions to try to uncover. What makes these revelations so appealing? I'm here with my co host. Greg Paulson high today discussing David Berg and the family international over the years Burke predicted the end of the world would come on several occasions each time. He used his false prophecies to draw more people into his extremist organization which many alleged was abusive and manipulative. David Berg made his first apocalyptic prediction in one thousand. Nine hundred seventy three five years earlier. He'd founded his cult in California from the beginning. The group emphasized an Anti Authority counterculture philosophy and urged initiates distrust the system. And those who didn't belong to the organization to isolate his followers. Burg instructed them to establish commune's at encouraged them to seclude themselves from the outside world by nineteen seventy-three. It was claimed that there were over one hundred such communities spanning multiple countries. Berg didn't have much personal contact with followers reaching them instead via an endless series of newsletters that year he published a dramatic prophecy to coincide with the famed comet of the century. Initially scientists believe the comet co who would be spectacular. Astral event dazzling the skies for months beginning in late nineteen seventy-three. Bergh's seized on the hype claiming that the comet signaled an armageddon which would begin in January of nineteen seventy four. He claimed that the comet would bring famine plague earthquakes and more he wrote a war in nineteen seventy four involving. America will slaughter half the population of the Soviet Union which will then be occupied and reorganized by the Chinese until nineteen ninety two but as the end of nineteen seventy-three neared Burg and the rest of the world. Were largely disappointed. The Comet Co who tech appeared nearly one hundred times dimmer than the predictions likely because much of it melted as it neared the Sahn. Needless to say burks predictions about the apocalypse didn't age. Well either though. Some of his followers had gone to considerable expense to prepare for the calamity. He never offered to make it up to them instead. He continued writing letters and carrying out church business often. Without acknowledging his false prophecies the failure did seem to rein in his apocalyptic rhetoric for a short time however his cult still largely isolated from the rest of society discouraged criticism of the leader and Burgh managed to hold onto most of his members after nineteen seventy four. But it seemed bird. Couldn't help himself for long in nineteen eighty. He claimed that yet another apocalypse was on. Its way this time. He believed a nuclear Holocaust would annihilate the planet once again. He advised his acolytes to stock up on supplies and urge them not to stop tithing to his church. Even as the world ended he wrote if the bombs start falling. Stay inside until the fallout clears. It may take a week or two. So don't drink open water until it safe but if there is a break in transmission. Keep sending your gifts to keep us going if you can. This time. Bird covered his tracks by claiming that he couldn't be held accountable if his predictions failed according to him the claims he made were straight from God so if they didn't come to pass it was only because the human mind could not possibly comprehend the complexity of God's plan it was a jumbled justification that required his followers to perform considerable mental gymnastics but by then many had been part of the group for over a decade. They were so used to taking his word at face value that they were willing to explain away. Inconsistencies STILL BURG. Wasn't able to keep an iron grip on the family forever after the group was rocked by other controversies including multiple credible accusations of child and sexual abuse in the mid eighties. Membership gradually diminished when Burg died in nineteen ninety four the organization was a shadow of its former self though it still retained. Its most ardent followers today. The family is still active and is currently run by. Berg's second wife Karen Zerbi there. Haven't been any widely publicized apocalyptic predictions by the crew since Berg's death it seems that much like the comet. The family couldn't shine so brightly after being exposed to daylight. "Box Canyon had been quiet for decades but by nineteen fifty seven. It was bustling with activity. A new group had moved into the small ravine and our outside of Los Angeles Barefoot men and women clad in robes were busy preparing for the end of the world. They were hard at work. Farming the land and erecting large stone structures to live in. There are only about one hundred members of the group but they were laying the groundwork to eventually house one hundred forty four thousand. They believed that they're fearless leader. Krishna VENTA would shepherd them all through the apocalypse. Instead within a year their entire society would come crumbling down in a firestorm. Hi I'm Vanessa. Richardson and this is colts. We're discussing Krishna. Venta members of his group the Fountain of the World held firm in their belief. That VENTA was the second coming of Christ. He would be the one to help. Guide them through World War three and the Fast Approaching Race War Krishna. Venta I started to make his rounds as a spiritual speaker in the nineteen forties. He traveled the country spreading his beliefs and soliciting donations. Over time his message evolved by the nineteen forties. He was pushing a message of spiritual enlightenment and everlasting life. It wasn't long before he claimed to be Christ and then he started to amass a following but he needed a place for all of his followers to go. That's when he found a small piece of land near Chatsworth. California called Box Canyon. Everything about it was perfect. It was far away from a large city but it was close enough for recruitment efforts in the nineteen fifties. Dentists started to preach about a coming race war between black and white communities. He said the Soviets would take this opportunity. When the United States was vulnerable to launch an attack one that would wipe out the government. Bente said this new. Soviet regime would outlaw acts of religion and the people of the United States would be enslaved but those in Box Canyon would remain safe under his protection they would emerge to start a religious revolution that would overthrow the new. Soviet government when all was said and done bente would be the ruler of this new world in an era of Cold War fear people clogged event as promise of safety and flocked to Box Canyon but everything inside the community was not as holistic as Venta. Made it seem. He was controlling and demanding of his followers time. He made enemies when he kicked two men out of the group in Nineteen fifty eight. They had accused him of having affairs with their wives. And Bento wasn't having it but just because he kicked him out didn't mean they would stay gone on December tenth nineteen fifty eight. They snuck back into box. Canyon strapped with dynamite. They confronted Venta in the middle of the night inside his large stonehouse in Box Canyon Day wanted revenge. They wanted his life. A fireball erupted out of the building and the blast was so large that it could be felt over a mile away the assailants killed ten people in total defectively brought the end of the group. Many the fountain of the world held onto the hope. That Bento would one day come back. But as the months ticked by and he didn't materialize. The group slowly split apart yet years later a few remained in box canyon hopeful that. Venta would come back home. There they would still talk with curious passers ply about their beliefs telling them of the coming race war while many didn't take their claim seriously. One young man from Ohio did and his name was Charles Manson. Thanks for listening. We'll be back tomorrow to examine the predictions of another Kalt. On December thirty first nineteen ninety nine people all over the planet gathered to ring in the new millennium millions of voices join together to count down the seconds and celebrations continued long into the night but for some the year two thousand was terrifying prospect survivalists than evangelical alike in the Western World. Warned that the second the clock struck midnight. Catastrophic computer crashes would begin self proclaimed experts claimed airplanes would suddenly be flying blind and warned that money in electronic bank accounts would disappear a few even believed Jesus Christ himself would descend from the heavens and that the new year would be humanity's last the apocalyptic scenarios predicted by. These doomsayers were varied and far-reaching. But all of the suppose calamities were known by a single name. Y. Two K. Hi I'm Vanessa. Richardson and this is colts. Apar- cast original. This is the twenty seventh episode in our Daily Series. On the strange prophecies made by different colts and their leaders throughout this month for taking a daily look at the myriad of apocalyptic predictions to try and uncover. What makes these revelations so appealing? I'm here with my co host. Greg Poulsen everyone. Today's discussing Y. Two K. as the year two thousand approached many worried that the computer programs that keep our world running and banks airlines and government would be disrupted by a technical glitch in the midst of the growing public fear several fringe groups took advantage of the pandemonium to make predictions on an apocalyptic scale fears about y two. K began as early as the mid eighties because computer storage at the time was costly. Many programs recorded dates using only the last two digits of the year for example. Nineteen eighty-five was simply stored as eighty five. This meant that the final two zero in the year two thousand looked exactly like those in the year. Nineteen hundred to software. Applications Tech experts warned that the glitch could result in confusion and system crashes worldwide wants. The date changed on January. First though the problem was identified well in advance. Many industries did not bother investing in solutions until the late nineties. The last minute moves to prevent impending disaster led many to worry. The problem would not be fixed in time. Doomsday's capitalized on the hysteria. Fanning the flames of paranoia to advance their own agendas. It particular libertarian. Writers like Kenneth W Royce and Gary North warned that government social programs in the United States like social security could be at risk rice even wrote a book called surviving. Doomsday in it. He advised readers to stock up on food and water in advance of a worldwide economic chateaux. Meanwhile Gary North made similar claims on his website in one of his posts subtitled the year the earth standstill. He predicted months before January. First two thousand. The world's stock markets will have crashed. Who IS GOING TO LEAVE? His money in his bank thinks his banks computer is not reliable. Other figures. Foreign that the Y. Two K. bug was the beginning of a religious Armageddon Reverend Jerry. Falwell proclaimed y two K may be God's instrument to shake this nation to humble the station he also stated that the event could start a revival that spreads over the face of the earth before the rapture of the church. No matter what form the fearmongering took it succeeded in amplifying the messages of these fringe groups. It allowed them to peddle their books and videotapes to profit in the short term because the Y2K glitch was a legitimate. Technical Concern. Caught like figures. Were able to seize on cherry-picked statements from experts and misrepresent the scale of the problem. Naturally there're prophecies all fit exactly within their existing beliefs hardcore Christian groups saw the coming day of reckoning as Biblical radically. Communists pointed to the problem as verification of their distrust of the government by the time the clock struck midnight on January. First two thousand. They had already gotten what they wanted. Their products were sold and their public. Profiles were augmented. Of course there are warnings. Were soon proven to be fraudulent. Throughout the world there were nothing more than a few minor glitches and computer problems as the year. Two thousand rolled around public. Fear quickly subsided. Some of those in the fringe. Groups were disavowed but figures like Falwell continued to have considerable public influence in later years. Like many cults the Y2k doom stairs seized on existing public anxiety and targeted vulnerable individuals many mixed technical language with religious rhetoric to confuse their audiences hopefully in the midst of the next crisis. We can learn to tune out dishonest alarmism and prevent opportunists from making a quick buck by stoking paranoia. Thanks for listening. We'll be back tomorrow to examine predictions of another cult. A podcast original. This is the eleventh episode in our Daily Series on the strange prophecies made by different cults and their leaders throughout this month. Were taking a daily look at the myriad of apocalyptic predictions to try and uncover. What makes these revelations so appealing? I'm here with my co host. Greg Paulson Hi everyone. Today we're discussing the apocalyptic prophecies of Wayne bent of former seventh day adventist preacher who convinced his followers that the end of the world was coming a few years later he told them he was the Messiah and their only hope for salvation in one thousand nine hundred eighty seven forty six year. Old Wayne Bent was a beloved pastor in Riverside California. He was known as a charismatic leader and preacher the seventh day adventist church had emerged as a sect of the Miller rate movement in the mid eighteen. Hundreds the middle rights taught that the end of the world would occur in conjunction with the return of Christ even had a date for it October. Twenty second eighteen forty four but that autumn day came and went in eighteen. Forty four Armageddon did not occur and the date became known among Miller rights as the great disappointment but one sect of the Church believed. The prophecy was true and the mill rights had simply gotten the date wrong. This sect split off to form the seventh day adventist church in Nineteen eighty-nine Wayne left the seventh day adventists and formed the Lord Our Righteousness Church in Sandpoint Idaho. His initial congregation reportedly consisted of three hundred members who followed him from California. A decade later Wayne moved his congregation to an encampment outside. Clayton New Mexico then in June of two thousand Wayne provided his congregation with a detailed prophecy for the end of the world. Wayne claimed that Michael the Archangel had spoken to him revealing that the world was to end on October thirty first. Two Thousand Seven. Wayne's new task was to prepare the soles of his congregation for Armageddon Wayne explained in a detailed chart that the book of Daniel had been previously misinterpreted. The correct date Wayne said was found by adding the prophesied number in Daniel to the year. Fifteen seventeen when the Protestant reformation began. This gave the year as two thousand seven. The exact date October thirty first was the day that Martin Luther publicly revealed his ninety five theses Wayne had the exact date of the end of the world clear as day. He said to prepare as people for the second coming of Christ Wayne claimed they needed to be naked. Before God this included the virgins of the church many of whom were minors as the embodiment of God. Wait encouraged many of the girls in his congregation. Some as young as thirteen to take this commandment literally if they lay naked with him they would be connected to God. Rumors of this conduct spread quickly beyond the Clayton compound and eventually the county sheriff was called to investigate as wing fended off the allegations of sexual misconduct Halloween. Two thousand seven came and went. Wayne's prophecy appeared to be incorrect. Not Long after his conduct with underage girls was also found to be wrong. The sheriff completed the investigation on April. Twenty second two thousand eight Wayne was arrested two weeks later in December of two thousand eight. He was convicted and sentenced to ten years in prison. Those prophecies didn't come true Wayne's actions still changed the lives of his followers forever. Thanks for listening. In March of Nineteen eighty-one a young university students sat at his desk studying. He was looking forward to graduating the next month and starting his career. He just had to make it past exams. Suddenly a strange urge came over the young man. He felt an other worldly presence overwhelming him. Feeling a great need for a paper and Pencil. Today we're discussing the beliefs of happy science a religious sect from Japan that predicts among other things a Chinese invasion of Japan the sinking of the United States into the ocean and Australia's rise as the world's global superpower in nineteen eighty-six Reijo `Akaola left behind his career as an import export trader to found what he is billed as a universal religion for today and for Future Generations Ochoa claimed to have reached great enlightenment in one thousand nine hundred eighty one and this eventually inspired him to create happy. Science like many colts fringe religious sects. Happy Science appears innocuous on the surface. Okada's teachings a spouse a quest to bring happiness to people across the world. Each individual is responsible for their own happiness or lack thereof by focusing on the foundations of love wisdom self reflection and progress followers can hone their thoughts and actions to achieve maximum happiness. Sounds simple enough even harmless if you stop there but scratching just below the sunny facade of happy science reveals a number of strange fantastic and racist beliefs that have made many rightfully wary of the group. The first red flag goes up somewhere around the time that Ochoa claim to be the reincarnation of among others shuck your Muni Buddha and a being known as Elkin Tara the Supreme God of the Earth The power of existing as Earth Supreme Deity went straight to Okawa's head at in Nineteen ninety-one. He delivered a lecture. The declared the Japanese chosen people Japan. Happy Science is founding coincided with a period of growth in Japan. Forshing shoot Kyo. Or New Religions with the country's economic boom and a pervading sense of recovery following the shame of World War. Two many Japanese people searched for a new spiritual center while many of these Shinshu. Kyo were branched versions of existing religions. Some Mike Happy. Science had a more pronounced political leaning often nationalistic in nature. It's perhaps this unifying sense of Japan's undeniable. Might that attracted so many too happy science then again maybe it was the countless books anime films and Manga that sucked them in today. The group claims to have membership that numbers in the millions and boasts centers around the world. When asked why the group had expanded to Australia. A spokesperson explained that Australia was foretold to be the world's greatest super power in five hundred years and happy science was here to help usher that in from the ground floor other countries. Don't fare so well in the happy science vision of the future. According to Okawa's prophecies the United States will eventually sink into the ocean. Meanwhile OKAWA's followers of been trying desperately to gain a foothold in Japan's elections for some time. If they succeed their first order of business will surely be to increase nuclear arms to better prepare for. China's foretold invasion of their island nation a latent fear of China's growing might may fuel this particular apocalyptic prediction. Then again. Maybe it's just a fear of not being happy. S7: April Fooled: April 27, 2020: Mussolini Captured

"Today's episode features a famous dictator a planned escape and a peculiar disguise. I'm referring to the arrest of Benito Mussolini from our Daily Series. Today and true crime. If you'd like to hear more of history's most shocking. True crime events tune into today in true crime every day. Freon spotify or wherever you get your podcasts. In the meantime enjoy today is Monday April twenty seventh twenty twenty on this day in nineteen forty five Italian dictator Benito. Mussolini was arrested in northern Italy. It was the beginning of the end for the longest ruling fascist of the world war. Two era welcome today in true crime. Apar- cast original due to the graphic nature of today's crimes listener. Discretion is advised extreme. Caution is advised for listeners. Under thirteen today were covering the Italian rebels who blockaded the northern route out of Italy as the country fell to allied forces and in the process captured Italian dictator and war criminal Benito Mussolini. Let's go back to the morning of April twenty seventh nineteen forty five. Bano hugged his coat tightly around his body as he watched the morning. Sun Crest over the horizon. He was grateful to see its arrival late. April had a way of tricking you into forgetting that. It wasn't summer yet next. He needed some coffee then to the command tent or Bono was a member of the Italian resistance but that meant different things to different people. They were mismatched band of Communists. Socialists and former fascists all trying to ensure that Italy returned to peace or Bono personally. Didn't care what form the government in Italy took after the war? He just wanted this all to be over. It was then that one of the volunteers ran up to the tent. A German convoy was heading up the road no weapons as far as they could see but lots of soldiers or Bono side and rubbed his brow. He wanted to keep battle from breaking out in the village. This would have to be handled. Delicately Peer Bellini Deli Stella was awoken from his slumber by a harsh knock at his door the cold nipped at him as he threw off his blanket. Worry gripped his heart as he wondered. What might warrant this intrusion. It was rebuttal. No his second in command among the Italian rebels with news German sir. Dozens of trucks coming up the road to Dongo now. It was pierced. Turn to CY. But he knew the men looked to him for action he gave his order. Stop Them Block the road and take full stock of WHO and what. They're trying to get across the border as Rubino scrambled to carry out his commands. Pierre looked for his pants later. That morning Pierre arrived on the scene to find that his men had not been exaggerating. The convoy was large with dozens of trucks as well as civilian coaches. No one was shooting yet. That was a good start. Walking up from the lead truck with or Bono was a German officer his long coat and stately hat failing to hide the fact that he was tired and scared or Bono introduced him as a former member of the loop. Volva named Shull Meyer. Schaumeyer immediately started in speaking with a heavy accent. He claimed that they meant the Italians. No harm they were simply trying to return to their home country. So that they might protect from the Americans French and Russians Pierre smirked wondering why he should allow such a thing to pass. Show Meyer said. My government has come to an agreement with your government. Peer pretended not to be given paused by this. It was possible that the insurgents in Milan or Rome had decided to let them pass. Maybe to avoid any bloodshed but right now in the north it was anarchy. There were half a dozen different political parties. One might swear allegiance to authority depended on who you were speaking with. Pierre decided to stick to his guns his authority was all that could be counted on right now and he wasn't about to let the Germans escaped north if they had any damned fascist with them for Italy to heal. The Fascists. Needed to be held accountable. So Pierre lied saying well I have orders to keep anyone from passing. But I might be willing to let you go if you let us. Search your convoy as the two began to argue her. Bano more curious by the minute wandered off to start checking in on the trucks himself. No one was gonNA fuss over just one man peaking his head in here and there. The German trucks were loaded with anti aircraft and machine guns pistols to. He clenched his jaw. This could get ugly fast if peer didn't let them through at the sound of someone whistling or Bono looked back and saw Pierre motioning for him to lead the men in a search of the convoy the German leader had acquiesced no doubt realizing he'd be the first to die in a firefight. The Italian partisans began moving from car to car asking to see identification from each German soldier. The morning stretched into the afternoon. As we're Bono began to near the point in the convoy where the trucks ended and the civilian cars began. He heard an excited yell from one of his men. Further down the line. We've got the big bastard. The man exclaimed. We're Bono scrunched. His face in amusement unclear on what the man meant when he neared the truck in question he looked inside to see a few soldiers looking nervous and one slumped over beneath a blanket. Were Bono pointed to the man and asked what's wrong with him anxiously. They tried to get or Bono to back off saying he's just drunk. He's just drunk. Were Bano rolled his eyes and asked if the man had his papers but they just kept repeating the same thing growing frustrated after a full day of investigating trucks or Bano pushed forward and reached for the blanket covering the drunk man as he ripped it off. His Mouth. Dropped Open in shock. They're laying on his side. Machine gun tucked between his legs was none other at then. Benito Mussolini himself next will discuss the fallout from the arrest now back to the story when Benito Mussolini was captured on April twenty seventh nineteen forty five. The Italian partisans could hardly believe their luck. Northern Italy was in chaos to run into none other than ill do. J. Himself was like finding a needle in a haystack. Mussalini had been defeated long before this. He was betrayed by his own. Fascist government in July nineteen forty-three and shortly thereafter was installed as a puppet dictator in northern Italy by Adolf Hitler himself all he could do throughout nineteen forty four and early. Nineteen forty-five was give impassioned speeches and hope that the Germans didn't lose the war. But he was a coward and hypocrite and while he was arguing for the merits of fascism. He was secretly sending emissaries to negotiate his surrender with the Americans to he was also in constant pain plagued by stress induced ulcers that according to him would cripple an ox and no wonder he knew a reckoning was coming over the course of his rule he had imprisoned and killed thousands of political opponents. He had chosen to enter the war and ally with Hitler. He had turned Italy into little more than a vassal to the Nazis and he had agreed to deport thousands of Italian Jews to concentration camps by April. Nineteen forty five. The consequences of these actions had sunk in. He seemed completely resigned to his fate. Those who are around him said there was little left of the fiery orator who had talked his way into power according to the biography. Mussalini by RJB Bosworth most believed that. Mussalini was suffering from severe depression that berged on mental breakdown. It was perhaps for this reason that he didn't make any plans for escape. From Italy. On April twenty fifth he met with members of the Socialist Party to discuss a potential surrender but nothing came of it by the next day. It seemed that his only other option was to try and flee north with the remaining Nazis in his vicinity. He rather callously left his wife and children behind while inviting his mistress Claretta and her brother Marcello to flee with him. It's unclear exactly how this decision came about. Though to be fair it may have been the result of the two women's differing points of view Mussolini's wife Raquel had always had sharp political mind and had helped her husband throughout his career. She may have known that the smarter move was to wait in the fascist friendly territory until the allies arrived and took them into military CUSTODY CLARITA. Meanwhile had no such instincts and merely wanted to be with her man. Collapsing access or no Mussolini's disguise was minimal with a large German overcoat wrapped around his body and a metal German helmet on his head. The great irony was that no matter what he wore he would surely be recognized. He'd spent much of his rule plastering his visage. All over Italy. The trucks made it within miles of the border. But we're stopped at Lake Como north of Milan Mussolini's anxiety must have been tremendous as he waited to see if he would be discovered. It was a process that took hours as every truck was searched. The convoy was even moved at one point further into the village so that both armies would be less exposed to angry third parties but of course eventually Mussalini was recognized. He tried to hide beneath a blanket but once found he put up no resistance. In fact according to World War Two scholar John Toland it was Mussalini. Who ADMITTED THAT? Clarita was part of the convoy. Up until that point. She'd successfully disguised herself as a Spanish refugee. The next day both were executed by firing squad. Their bodies were hung in a square in the lawn beaten and spat on. Joan stood before them promising salvation. He motioned to a VAT of sticky sweet punch the most infamous batch of flavor aid ever core. Hi I'm Vanessa. Richardson and this is called a podcast. Original this is the fourth episode in our Daily Series. On the strange prophecies made by different cults and their leaders throughout this month. We're taking a daily look at the myriad of apocalyptic predictions to try uncover. What makes these revelations so appealing? I'm here with my co host. Greg Poulsen Hi everyone. Today we're discussing the beliefs of Jim Jones. In one thousand nine hundred seventy seven. He convinced nearly a thousand of his followers to move to Jonestown a remote compound in the jungles of Guyana. But they were prisoners in this false paradise after a small group tried to escape on November Eighteenth Nineteen seventy-eight Jones forced his followers to drink cyanide laced. Punch at gunpoint nine hundred. Nine people perished many of them children. Jim Jones began his ministry as a street. Preacher in Indiana by nineteen sixty five. When he was in his mid thirties he had amassed congregation. He called the People's Temple and though he started as a Christian preacher rhetoric slowly departed from traditional evangelical beliefs. Around that time he started referring to himself as a messiah. His teachings grew steadily more apocalyptic and in an effort to escape the conservative Midwest. He ordered his followers to move with him to California. They settled in San Francisco where the church turned commune. Thrived by nineteen seventy. The Peoples Temple had nearly five thousand members but despite his growing ranks Jones did not feel safe he believed the world was on the brink of nuclear holocaust. He became obsessed with finding a safe haven for his followers. A place where they could build a utopia and survived the coming nuclear war. He found this safe space in Guyana. A former British colony in South America the socialist regime there was sympathetic to Jones. 'cause they allowed him to build a compound in the wilderness miles from civilization. Nearly a thousand members of the People's Temple. Move to the commune. He dubbed Jones town but the compound was far from the Utopia that had been promised the oppressive jungle climate and limited resources made it impossible to grow enough food. The followers were also forced to attend nightly meetings where Jones droned on for hours force. Feeding them radical apocalyptic propaganda. His sermons were also blasted over loudspeakers day in and day out so that his voice never left his congregants ears. Church members were forbidden from leaving Jonestown. These laws were enforced by the Red Brigade of volunteer army wielding machetes and firearms. The church members were also forbidden to contact the outside world back home in the states. This caused panic. Hundreds of families urged the government to investigate fearing their loved. Ones were being held against their will in Diana to Jim Jones. Government intervention was a fate worse than death. It was around this time that he began holding late night drills with his followers wherein they practiced committing mass suicide demonstrating their commitment to him by the time. Congressman Ryan made his fateful visit Jonestown. The entire compound was on high alert. It's heartbreaking to think of those few brave souls who sought Ryan's help in trying to prevent their deaths they may have ultimately sealed their fates that night. The Red Brigade rounded up over nine hundred followers. Gunning down any who tried to escape. These prisoners were faced with heroin decision death by cyanide or bullet given the options. It's no wonder so many people chose poisoning. They died holding their children hoping to awaken the eaten. They were promised. Thanks for listening. The time had come for the group to establish a commune in the remote mountain forests of Canada's Gaspe Peninsula there they would await the biblical apocalypse with Terry. Oh as their abusive spiritual guide. Hi I'm Vanessa. Richardson and this is colts. A podcast original. This is the eighteenth episode in our Daily Series on the strange prophecies made by different cults and their leaders throughout this month. Were taking a daily look at the myriad of apocalyptic predictions to try and uncover. What makes these revelations so appealing? I'm here with my co host. Greg Poulsen Hi everyone. Today we're discussing the beliefs of Canadian cult leader Roque Terro. He told his band of young followers that the apocalypse would happen on February seventeenth. Nineteen seventy-nine convincing them to live in total isolation in the forests of Quebec to wait out the AB taros devotees would gradually become his slaves and earned the nickname the anthill kids in nineteen seventy eight thirty year old. Roque. -Tario presided over the healthy living clinic. A wellness center that combined holistic medicine and natural foods with Terry ozone at up tation of Christian and seventh day adventist beliefs as the clinic's founder. Terro assumed the role of a charming and charismatic leader. He convinced his small group of young spiritual seekers that he possessed special healing powers and could receive messages from God including visions about the forthcoming apocalypse. In June of nineteen seventy eight. -Tario announced that the time had come to build commune and await the Doomsday. He ordered his group to cut all ties with the outside world and follow him. Into the remote forests of Quebec's Gaspe Peninsula. Several members left the group at this demand but Terry Oh and his remaining twelve followers and a few children set off discount for a location. Then on July Sixth Tarot claim to receive a New Vision revealing the date of the apocalypse February Seventeenth Nineteen seventy-nine according to Tarot the doomsday would be signalled by lightning storms and boulder sized hail falling from the sky. Only the senlis among them would be selected as gods surviving chosen people. Three days later. The group settled in a forest at the base of a mountain. Outside of new Carlisle Quebec. They called it eternal mountain and name themselves. The Holy Moses Mountain family as they began preparing for the apocalypse they earned a new nickname. The anthill kids while -Tario relaxed his followers worked like ants to construct a cabin and plant a garden for their commune. They often work during strange hours. Inducing fatigue as they nothing but vegetables from the land that September each until kid received a new biblical name and Terry himself was renamed Moses for leading them to the so called promised land members were not allowed to have sex without Taros permission and in October. Nineteen seventy-eight Terro dissolve the marriages in the group. He married each of the nine females himself telling them that it was God's will for them to bear his children over the years. The anthill kids had as many as twenty six children to the outside world. The group looked like a homeopathic. Help Group they even offered smoking cessation. Classes led by Terry. Oh but in reality Terry. Oh was a cruel and manipulative leader. He taught his cult. That Jesus was the bastard son of Mary who we termed a prostitute and he convinced them that their doomsday salvation depended on pleasing him. Terry Oh was particularly interested. In controlling his nine wives he divided them into two separate groups and upper and lower class and constantly changed his favorite forcing the women. To Vie. For his favor February Seventeenth nineteen seventy nine came and went without an apocalypse but -tario easily dismissed this rationalizing. That human time was different. Three and a half years earlier wine lend had predicted that this date would mark the second coming of Jesus Christ and the start of what could be a global nuclear apocalypse apocalypse. But the pastor delivered good news and his blog post. God had seen their church's devotion and generosity and had responded with mercy he had given them one more year. Honor Hi. I'm Vanessa. Richardson and this is cults. Park asked original. Welcome to the ninth episode in our Daily Series on the strange prophecies made by different cults and their leaders throughout this month. We're taking a daily look at the myriad of apocalyptic predictions to try and uncover. What makes these revelations so appealing? I'm here with my co host. Greg Poulsen Hybrid one today discussing the beliefs of the Church of God preparing for the Kingdom of God. This predominantly Internet based group is a splinter sect of the worldwide Church of God in the fall of two thousand eight pastor Robert Weiland announced the final seventh seal referenced in the Book Revelation had been opened. Signaling the start of the countdown to n times in the coming years. He continued to reschedule. The apocalypse as one after another of his predictions failed to come true. When Ronald wineland prophesized that Armageddon would begin on May Twenty Seventh Twenty twelve? It's doubtful. His followers were surprised. The pastor had been preaching about the apocalypse for most of his adult life during the nineteen eighties. Wine lend had served as a minister for the worldwide Church of God a Radio Based Ministry. That had been making a pack elliptic predictions since the Nineteen Thirties. It's founder Herbert. W Armstrong had first suggested that the end times would begin in nineteen seventy five. After Armstrong's death wine. Lynn broke with the worldwide Church of God taking a number of his flock with him in nineteen ninety eight. He founded the Church of God preparing for the Kingdom of God operations were based in Cincinnati Ohio but his congregation was global. Every Saturday afternoon. He released audio files sermons. That could be downloaded by listeners. Around the world be sermons invariably focused on the second coming of Jesus Christ and the End Times as described in the book of revelation. Because winelands church was going to be so influential during these tumultuous times one of the best ways for his followers to prepare by paying tithes and making donations in December of two thousand two wind. Lenin formed his flock that he planned to open a Swiss bank account in his own name to hold church funds for the purpose of what's coming. Why lend announced that? He had been chosen as God's End Time Apostle and prophet of the end times which were due to commence on September thirtieth. Two Thousand Eight. According to Weiland this would begin with a nuclear attack on the United States that would kick off World War three not long afterward. He released video titled a warning to Markers which promised that his critics would soon be punished with a sickness that will eat them from the inside out but September thirtieth came and went without any sign of the nuclear holocaust wind had promised however the pastor had an explanation this was merely a calculation error. The true date of the apocalypse had now been revealed as the upcoming anti cost. Holiday may twenty seventh twenty twelve but before that date arrived he would find himself in another kind of trouble on November tenth twenty eleven. He was indicted on five charges of tax evasion. For concealing the Swiss bank account during the trial prosecutors laid out the myriad of ways he had used a church funds for personal use of federal grand jury found him guilty on all five counts on June thirteenth twenty twelve. He was sentenced to forty two months in prison but bars couldn't keep God's apostle from spreading his grim prophecies during his sentence. Ronald Wineland continued releasing audio sermons online on the eve of May twenty seventh. He pushed the apocalypse back a year when that deadline came and went without any significant global events wineland adjusted his prophecy to a future pentecost. That would arrive after much. Suffering had occurred on earth. His prison sentence concluded in two thousand sixteen in September of that year. He released a new book prophecy against the nation's placing pentecost two thousand nineteen as the date of the second coming like all of his past predictions. It passed without event. Thanks for listening. We'll be back tomorrow to examine the predictions of another cult. You can catch our other episodes of cults for free on spotify or wherever you listen to podcasts.

Today we're discussing. The beliefs of Israel Hawkins the leader of the West Texas based religious group known as the House of Galway since the early nineteen eighties. He's told followers that he is a holy. Prophet sent to guide them through a coming nuclear war that will claimed the lives of four out of every five people on her before he became a self proclaimed Prophet of God. Israel HAWKINS WAS BUFFALO BILL. A small time rockabilly singer and Abilene police officer in. Nineteen seventy five his eldest brother. Jj Hawkins returned from a seven year. Stay in Israel. With earth shattering news he had discovered a Hebrew inscription that read the House of Ya. The Hawkins Brothers swapped their names for Hebrew ones fitting prophets of God. Jag became Jacoeb. Bill became Israel. They founded a pair of churches in Odessa and Abilene called the house of Galway. Their teachings were hodgepodge of Judeo Christian fundamentalism drawing from the Torah New Testament seventh day. Adventists them andy apocalyptic teachings of Herbert W Armstrong. They promoted strict adherence to the six hundred. Thirteen rabbinic laws such as not shaving beards or eating shellfish and forbade the observance of holidays like Christmas and Easter other beliefs included the doctrine that Satan was a woman specifically the traitorous former wife of Galway and that she had installed all of the world's politicians including the Catholic Pope but at the center of the House of Y'all ways teachings was the belief that the end times described in the book of Revelation. Were close at hand. Clock was to say that four out of every five shall fall away. Israel believed that he and his brother were the two witnesses from revelation. Who were supposed to warn the House of? Ya and guide it through the end times. This became impossible when Yaakob succumbed to cancer. In Nineteen ninety-one Israel responded by re translating the Scripture to show that his brother's death had in fact been foretold and that he was meant to guide the church through the second coming alone re translating and reinterpreting scripture would become go to practice for Israel over the coming years in nineteen ninety-three expanded the church's teachings to allow polygamy his wife filed for divorce and was promptly excommunicated but the house of Yahweh continued to grow by nineteen ninety six. Books and occasional television appearances. Israel Hawkins made a series of Public Doomsday predictions. I that four fifths of the world would be killed in a nuclear war by two two. That was later adjusted to September twelfth. Two thousand six. Six Body would take nine months. A length of human pregnancy for it to actually come to Fruition Bat. Set the date for the second coming on. June twelfth. Just before midnight on March twenty four th nineteen ninety eight nearly every home in Garland Texas had their. Tv's turn to channel eighteen. Most residents joke together as they shifted their gaze between the static on screen and the clock on their walls but in one house the atmosphere was considerably more tense. A devoted group of Taiwanese cultists filled one of the small homes nearly to the Brim. None of them were laughing or even speaking instead. They watched the screen in silent. Anticipation wants the clock struck midnight. Their faith would be rewarded. They would see the face of God on the TV. The couldn't wait to rub his grace in the face of the police assembled outside their doors. One of the cultus peeked out the window and saw the officers tensely gripping battering ram authorities. Were ready to break down the doors if they needed to. They waited breathlessly for the prophecy of the cult to fail and for its followers to react with violence. Hi I'm Vanessa. Richardson and this is called apart. Cast original this is the seventh episode in our Daily Series. On the strange prophecies made by different cults and their leaders throughout this month. We're taking a daily look at the myriad of apocalyptic predictions to try and uncover. What makes these revelations so appealing? I'm here with my co host. Greg Poulsen Hi everyone. Today we're discussing the beliefs of Han Ming Chat. He convinced members of his called. Originally based in Taiwan that God would appear on television in nineteen ninety eight. His followers believed that six days after his televised debut. God would descend from the heavens to rescue them from the coming apocalypse in a spaceship Holland. Ming Chen asked a lot from his followers in nineteen ninety seven. He persuaded one hundred fifty of his devotees. To give up their homes in Taiwan. Follow him to America where God would save them from the imminent and days. The idea of chance apocalypse was attractive. He promises followers would be the lucky few to experience a new world and even space travel. He made them believe they were special. That they've been chosen to lead a a new world order as a result. The one hundred fifty faithful members of Chen's called pack their bags and started a new life with him in California in nineteen ninety five but two years after that the apocalypse Chen had been preaching about still hadn't arrived whether out of genuine belief or because he felt he owed his supporters for sacrificing so much for him. Chen suddenly announced a new prophecy. This time he claimed that the day of reckoning would begin in the small town of Garland Texas outside of Dallas to Chen garland sounded like God land so it must be a holy site once again chance. Followers agreed to uproot their lives to follow him like many colts. Chen aim to isolate his acolytes from the outside world but while some groups limit their devotees from contacting their family and friends. Chen went a step further. Most of his followers didn't speak English and thus they were totally reliant on Chen for social support in the US. They were thousands of miles from everything they'd ever known many felt they had no choice but to do whatever. Chen asked once. They landed in America. Even if his prophecies no longer made sense to them as a result they became more reliant on Chen and more devoted than ever when he finally announced a date for his apocalypse. He believed that God would announce his plans to end the world via televised broadcast on March. Twenty Fifth Nineteen Ninety Eight. Chen claimed God would reappear in human form on earth six days after that on March thirty first when March twenty-fifth came and passed without the appearance of God. The media swarmed Chen's home. He admitted his prophecy had failed. He even said ashamed. -Ly that no one should take his prediction seriously. At all. Since followers heard their profit admit he had been wrong. They heard him tell the world that he was a fraud then yet many of his supporters stayed in the cult long after nineteen ninety eight in the end they were still in a completely foreign country and after being ridiculed by their families back home in Taiwan leaving. Good jobs and good friends behind. They felt that they were trapped. In Chen's organization. Many try to forget the apocalyptic incident ever happened. They rationalized their choices by pretending that the whole thing had been an elaborate test of their faith they stuck by Chen for years afterward as he continued to lie to them and even as he made several more predictions which never came to pass to some of his followers. Leaving the called at that point would have been too painful it would have meant admitting that date abandon their families for nothing. They believed in a fraud. Self-denial was easier and it was exactly that kind of thinking which allowed Chen to continue to pray on his supporters. It wasn't until years later that chance group finally collapsed with each subsequent failed prediction. More of his followers reached their limit. Others were forced to return to Taiwan because of green card or visa issues in the end. Chen pulled dozens of families apart and then seized on his followers sense of isolation in a foreign country. Hopefully his lost sheep. Were able to rebuild a stronger community. Once they were finally free of his manipulations. Thanks for listening.
