It's been more than a week since It's Christopher Haynes escaped police custody at George Washington Hospital, and the long search is leaving the family of the man Haynes is accused of killing frustrated and worried. Why can't we catch him? Sheila Jackson mother is the of Brent Hayward. The 33 year old man Christopher Haynes is accused of killing. The family just wants to know if If there's as much manpower being put into finding this man as it was in the man from Pennsylvania. Jackson says she also wants to know who is accountable. First of all, for those officers who let this man loose. DC police tell the search is a top priority and resources are being dedicated to following tips. An internal affairs investigation is looking into the circumstances surrounding Haynes escape. Jackson says with him still out there. I hope nobody else gets hurt. I just pray nobody gets hurt. FDA advisors ruled this week that those drugs aren't actually helping with your stuffy nose, Patients do seem to have some benefit from these medications, and maybe that's because they are having benefit from the other ingredients in the medications, not necessarily the phenylephrine. Phenylephrine is effective in its nasal spray form, and Hebert says it's probably in most of the cold medicines you can buy without having to talk to someone behind the pharmacy counter. An update this morning for students and parents in part of our area who have been dealing with school bus snafus since last month. Howard County Public Schools will restore all of its bus routes next week. In a letter to families, the superintendent says contractors will cover all of the school system's more than 500 bus routes starting Monday. On the first day of school last month, thousands of students were affected when many buses were delayed or didn't show up at all. Part of the problem is that many county public schools still plan to adjust to school start times starting on Wednesday of next week to help students get to school on time. We a begin drug with bust for the history books locally in Anne Arundel County. The drugs that were seized included 18 kilograms of cocaine estimated to be valued at approximately $2 million. Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown says that amounts to the largest cocaine recovery stemming from an investigation in Anne Arundel County history. The deadly drugs they were peddling and their dangerous activities eventually reached widespread across Maryland. Ten people face charges in connection with the investigation including Clayton Mooring who investigators describe as being a kingpin who imported large amounts of cocaine from Texas and supplied numerous drug traffickers in our area. Nick Eine, L -E -W -T -O News. -P Not guilty. That is the verdict for suspended Loudoun County Public School spokesman Wade Bayard this week who was facing a felony perjury charge you may remember. This was related to the investigation into two separate sexual assaults by the same student. I'm not really happy, I'm relieved. That's what suspended school system spokesman Wade Bayard told NBC4 about his reaction to the verdict. Bayard was facing a felony perjury charge accused of lying to a grand jury that was investigating the county's response to two in -school sexual assaults by the same student in 2021. He says it's unclear whether he'll return to the school system. It might be hard to be the face of Loudoun County again because people would a school system. says no personnel decisions regarding Bayard have been made. A spokeswoman for Attorney General Jason Miyares tells WTOP that the special grand jury indicted Bayard and quote, we are proud that the judge agreed with us time and time again that this case needed to be heard in front of a jury. In Maryland, Assistant Police Chief Nicholas Augustine with Montgomery County Police says teens are the main culprits thanks to TikTok challenges involving kiosks and Hyundais. also There are a lot of thefts occurring in our downtown locations such as Wheaton and Silver Augustine says a disbanded auto theft unit is now back at the department to tackle the problem. The victim in a deadly crash locally involving an on -duty officer is now being identified this morning. The Charles County Sheriff's Office says that 57 -year -old Gregory Keith Rowland was killed early this week on Wednesday morning when he was walking in the travel portion of Crane Highway. The sheriff's office further says this hour the deputy pulled pulled over and tried to save the man. Rowland died at the scene. Sheriff Tory Berry said the crash is being being investigated this morning and called it an unfortunate incident on many levels. The Navy's weapons testing locally more knife -r rad than something's missing. A permit to carry out that testing. Dean Niox is with the Potomac Riverkeeper Network and says watermen in the Potomac River have pulled up projectiles from the Navy's weapons testing along with their they're harvests of oysters and crabs. The testing's conducted near Dahlgren, Virginia, south of the Hairy Nice Bridge. They've discharged 33 million pounds of ordinances into the Potomac River without any permit without any limit. Niox says the federal lawsuit is not asking the Navy to stop the testing but to get a permit from the EPA something Niox says is required. They're going to have to raise the drawbridge. That means they're going to have to lower the gates and keep traffic off of the bridge starting at about 4 10 this morning so roughly a minute or so away. Expect delays and expect sudden slowing on both the inner and the outer loop through Oxon Hill and through Alexandria sticking with Virginia 95 southbound or crash the of Dale City Truck Scales last seat in the center of the roadway have not gotten an update on that one in some time. The other crash we outbound have is going to be before Stafford blocking the right lane northbounders. You've got crash activity trying to get into the Springfield Interchange and that is going to be on the ramp for 170B which I believe is the ramp that carries you on toward the inner loop of Capital the Beltway and the crash narrows the ramp though they do not say how and the camera does not reveal that. Elsewhere on the Capitol Beltway between McClain and Alexandria you should be okay. We did have a crash reported after outer loop Van Doren trying to get into the Springfield Interchange over on the left side. I have not had an update on that one in some time. Thanks for watching. "Byard has been found not guilty in a felony perjury trial related to a pair of sexual assaults at separate schools by the same student. W .T .O .P. Scott Yellen has our report tonight. Byard was accused of lying under oath before a grand jury. Virginia Attorney General Jason Miaras impaneled that grand jury to investigate how the county handled a pair of in -school sexual assaults by the same student in 2021. Byard was placed on unpaid leave in December and the school system says no personnel decisions regarding Byard have been made. But he tells NBC4 that he's not thinking about the future. Really tonight, we're gonna go to a family birthday party. I'm gonna watch the Yankees. gonna I'm chill out tomorrow and then we'll start thinking the future. This experience has taught me don't plan any further than tomorrow. In a statement, a spokeswoman for Miaras tells WTOP, quote, while we are disappointed with the jury's decision, we're proud of our for team uncovering the truth and providing answers to concerned Virginia parents. Scott Gelman, WTOP News. For decades, the U .S. Navy has been testing weapons along the Potomac, now two environmental groups are suing. There's a stretch of the Potomac River south of the Haringeyes Bridge where the U .S. Navy's Surface Warfare Center at Dahlgren, Virginia, carries out weapons testing. We know that watermen are pulling these projectiles out of the river when they're out there, you know, harvesting oysters or pulling crabs up. Dean Nyox is with the Potomac Riverkeeper Network, one of two groups suing the Navy. Nyox says the suit filed in federal court is not trying to stop the testing, but to require the Navy to get a permit. Like every other entity is required to do to charge into the Potomac River waters of the United States. A Navy spokesperson responded to WTOP's questions with a statement saying the Department of the Navy does not comment on ongoing litigation. Kate Ryan, WTOP News. Well, how about this for solving climate change using poop for power? WSSC Water and Montgomery County have reached a five -year deal to turn that waste into natural gas to power the county's ride on buses. The new Piscataway Bioenergy Facility captures methane gas using the wastewater treatment process to be upgraded to renewable natural gas and sold to Montgomery County to power the ride on buses. The whole deal is expected to generate seven hundred thousand dollars a year in revenue for WSSC Water while reducing the utility's greenhouse gas emissions. A warning for you now behind the wheel from local law enforcement or when you park your car at night or anytime, car thefts are very on much the rise. In DC they're up 118 % over the last year and in Montgomery County. We've seen a significant increase in water number of thefts. Stolen car cases are up 84 % with the thefts. Assistant Chief Nicholas Augustine with Montgomery County Police says majority is younger adults or teenagers. TikTok challenges are behind a lot of the cases downtown such as Wheaton and Silver Springer hotspots. In the county a specialty auto theft unit which was cut out of the budget in 2021 is back to focus on the issue. The number one way to stop thieves lock your car in case it is stolen. You can blame a warmer winter on southern ticks migrating north but it's not the only reason experts say you need to be careful out and about this summer. Syed is asking Maryland's highest court deny to a petition to expand the rights of crime victims after they've been convicted. Syed was convicted of murder about 23 years ago in the killing of his high school ex -girlfriend in Baltimore. He went to prison for more than two decades. He regained his freedom last year after prosecutors found flaws in the evidence presented at trial and a judge agreed to vacate the conviction, but surviving relatives of the victim, Hae Min Lee, appealed the ruling arguing they did not get enough notice to attend the hearing that set Syed free.
