"Okay Chuck. I can't stand the tension any longer. Were they successful? In changing three hundred and sixty thousand street signs all across Sweden in one single night while I want to say for sure my gut says they may have missed one or two okay but over over overall they were very successful at four fifty in the AM on September. Third and nine hundred sixty seven bunch. Bunch of people came out to watch. There were cars on the road and they said stop go to the other side and directed people the other side and said all right have have a blast everybody yeah there was like a countdown on the radio and then there was the announcement after after they reached one that Sweden now drives on the right hand side of the road and everybody could start driving. And I'm sure they were like wobbling and weaving and kind of like little kids on a bike with training wheels or after having the training of those taken off. I should say I'll bet it was adorable to see but There were the the next day that was a Sunday at like five. Am when they started and the next the next Business Day? Monday there were no fatalities. Nobody died there. Were like one hundred fifty seven car wrecks which is slightly lower than a normal Monday in Sweden. Yeah and it was not cheap either. Obviously this is going to cost a ton of money At the time it costs six hundred. Twenty eight million kroner Which was astronomical. Yeah it's about three hundred sixteen million American dollars today but about a five percent more than the government Estimated budget which is not a bad overrun. No not at all and if you read some of the articles on it we we used In addition to a couple of others this one BBC article about it. That was super interesting. They pointed out some of the people who were there and took part in this point out like do you. That was ridiculously cheap. Even for the time for the this the massive scale of this not just the infrastructure again but also the all of the public information campaign to they. They did it for cheap and they did a really quickly. Yeah it's it was quite a project My hat is off to them For doing it by all accounts like pretty successfully. Yeah they did it and they said it's great but then like I said traffic fatalities went back up Ashort couple years when people got used to it and so Sweden undertook a project starting in Nineteen ninety-seven that That said we're we. We don't want any traffic fatalities. No matter what side of the road drive on In our country so they came up with a program called Vision Zero and They've just been slowly but surely trying to whittle down the number traffic fatalities and in two thousand sixteen. It was down to two hundred and seventy two hundred seventy. That's a miniscule amount for a country the size of Sweden for an entire year. So who knows if over get zero hats off to them for also for trying to do that? An for digging up tell us star to cut the hit. Song Vision Zero. They literally had to dig one of the members. Oh Man Nothing else except to Recommend the ninety nine percent invisible episode. Because they do their show a little differently so they got some cool interviews with people that were there at the time and It's always a little more dressed up than our show and by that I mean way. More dressed up agreed. They do very well over there so that's it for short stuff. Go head on over to ninety nine percent invisible and we will see you next time stuff. You should know. "In a gotTa Davita everybody and welcome to the short stuff. It's Josh and Chuck and there's Cherry over there Somewhere out there in the ether right. I hope so. And this is this is stuffy. Should know short stuff. We should probably stop. Horsing around yes so I don't know why he said in a gotTa Davita. I'm assuming is that Swedish. No I think it's a pig. Latin or GIBBERISH. Oh really yeah. It's in the garden of Eden. But for some reason he said Nagata Davita. Why did you say for the show just for fun? It's a pleasant thing to hear it. Don't you think I thought it was an Easter egg? No now and now it's just totally ruined. Well we are talking about a pretty interesting thing that you Tease out on an episode. We did recently and One that is from an episode. Wealth is not from an episode. But there's also a ninety nine percent invisible episode about this. Yep there is if you want to hear a better version tune into Roman has beaten just about every way but we'll try our best right agreed so we're talking about today is called Dogan H. And Dog and H Is Swedish for our day or right day? H H stands for Heuberger which is The Swedish word for right and what the whole thing was really talking about with something called a man who grew traffic. Calm Log Nice I don't know if Nice is the right word but sure thank you and what that means is the right hand. Traffic diversion and ultimately would all of this of these words and lots piled together mean as that. This is the day dog and h September. Third Nineteen sixty seven win. Sweden said. We're no longer driving on the left. Hand of the road like we have been since seventeen thirty four. Where all of a sudden one day going to switch over to the right hand side. That's right and I think did you mention when they how long they had been driving on the other side. Yes it's seventeen thirty four. It's a long time so what you're having to do is there's a couple of factors here. You've got to teach people how to do this literally. So they put together a pamphlet. That literally told you how to do it. And then you gotTA. It's an infrastructure project. Supposedly the largest driving related infrastructure project ever undertaken by any country. Oh really knows definitely Sweden's largest infrastructure project to that day. It was the largest for any country as far as traffic's related largest traffic related infrastructure. Yes what I just said okay. I just couldn't believe my ears chug but Yeah Yes oh yeah. There's the infrastructure section of it and then there's the public information campaign and it was a lot more than just like a pamphlet pamphlets. Were step like one dot you know oh go with indicating that there's plenty other steps about that and some of the other things they did was Tv ADS RADIO ADS newspaper ADS. They came up with a logo for Dogan Age. That was everywhere They had a A song contest to pick a theme song for dog and H and they came up with a good one. It listen to it. Yeah it was good of you. Yeah Yeah I it was called. The American translation is keep to the rights. Vinson sweet it was by the Tele Stars and it was like you said selected by vote it actually reached number five on their their charts whatever. The Swedish charts are And there was also a weird little sly side meaning because apparently keeping it to the right means to be faithful to your significant other as opposed to cheating on son which is going left. Oh and heard that before. Yeah wow chuck this and a deep cut right there fairly deep so the the name of the song in Swedish is hall dig till Googlers Benson and I listened to it enough that I could have sung it but enough time is the lab since I've heard it. So can you sing? Great No do you think we've talked about it enough to play it at any point or do we have to tell people to go. Look it up on Youtube. No I mean let's could. We play like a version where we won't get sued. We'll find out how about that all right. Well let's play a little part right now. Here is how dig till Hugger Vinson by the Tele Stars..

These black and Latino men were coerced by New York police into falsely confessing to the rape of a white Dogar in central park in nineteen eighty nine their convictions were vacated in two thousand and two when someone else confess to her rape. NPR's TV critic Eric Dagens is online higher high. So Netflix tweeted yesterday that when they see us has been their most watched series in the US every day since it was released in late may. This is the fact that as you've written this is a really hard series to watch. Yeah. You know it took me three times through watching this series. And I, I cried while I blocked parts of it. But in a way, I think the difficulty of watching somebody scenes seeing these teenage bullies age fourteen to six. Teen being physically mentally coarsened at expulsed confessions. They can they can just go home. It's a crucial part of the shows power. I mean it really makes you experience the trauma that they went through that their families went through. And this comes at.

"Our TV critic Eric Dagens went to the up fronts, cocktail parties and presentations in New York. All this week hair, too tough job at somebody. So everybody's focused on the high quality TV outlets like HBO which has game of thrones at net flakes, or the networks. Just not as cool now. Certainly there fighting that perception and every network is also part of a larger company that's gone through a lot of change. So Comcast own MBC and Disney ABC, they've tried to get bigger to compete better with the Netflix in the Amazons of the world. So NBC is starting its own streaming service next year, that's free and supported by ads. And that's a big deal, Disney announced that it's going to take operational control of Hulu and CBS is trying to keep going after a string of metoo and diversity related controversies including CNN CEO, an longtime hands on leader less Moonves forced to step down last year after harassment and assault allegations. So TV makes a lot of money, you know, the last year's upfront, did something like nine billion dollars in business, but they do have to convince the industry. They're still cool, but not frighten off the advertisers, and traditional viewers. All right. So that's the business end of things. What about the shows, did you see any new shows or new trends that you think were interesting was interesting, these networks, they're now cards in? A much bigger media machine. So they don't have the independence to take chances like they used to. But Keenan Thompson is going to start in a sitcom executive produced by Chris rock called the Keenan show and he's still going to appear Saturday Night Live. That'll be interesting net. Geos genius series is finally going to look at the life of a female non white genius in Aretha, Franklin and the show that one my heart is called mixed issue. It's about the early years of this character on black ish called rainbow. Johnson played by Tracy Ellis Ross, now this character grew up in the nineteen eighties as a mixed race child. She was raised in a commune in all of a sudden, she has to go to a mainstream regular school with her siblings, and then go so well, and we've got a little clip. Let's check it out. Magin being.

"Eric Dagens NPR news. All right. It's time for our Bill of the month. This is where we take a close look at medical bills that you send us in this month. We've got one that. I bet a lot of people will relate to especially those of you who play sports and have gone through an injury. Elizabeth Rosenthal is editor in chief of our reporting partner. Kaiser health news, and she joined us from our studios in New York City to tell us about who were meeting this month. It's a stay bond Serano. He's a forty one year old software engineer from the suburbs of Philadelphia. Okay. And I think we have a little tape of him here describing exactly what happened to him last year around October. I got injured my knee playing soccer or football. Yeah. It was a bad. Bruce. I got my MC L got injured. But I went to the doctor to get an opinion to see what the problem was and. After the doctor Saami an exam next race sheet suggested I wear a brace to help with the healing. All right. That doesn't sound that bad. Nothing broken has to wear a brace. And that's the kind of thing a lot of people go through right? Yeah. It's probably one of the most common sports injuries. But it can be a big deal financially because when Mr. Serono went to the doctor he got a hinged knee brace purchase through the doctor's office for eight hundred eighty two dollars and since he hadn't met his deductible. He paid most of that himself most of the eight hundred dollars hinge knee, braces, some kind of special brace that would be a lot more expensive. Well, yeah, it's kind of a fancy brace. It has a hinge where your knee bends. But you know, that's not really justified here. I while the company that makes it says the retail price is about two hundred and forty two dollars. But it's not really clear why this patient needs a fancy knee brace. I mean, you know, we all know you can go into target or Cosco and by an embrace for about twenty dollars. And that probably would have done the trick. Let's listen to a little bit more of his voice here. This is very simple. You know, your run-of-the-mill injury. That anybody can, you know, twister ni the continues their ankle got to north of northeast, and he's they having to give you these brace then you're in for an eight hundred dollar Bill. I don't think that there's a reason why anybody shouldn't be paying eight hundred dollars for one hundred dollar fifty dollars brace. All right. So clearly sounds like he he feels like he's been taken for a ride here. So every learn more about why this happened from the doctor's office. Well, not exactly the doctor's office. Didn't return our multiple phone calls. We actually got some info from another orthopedist. Who said, oh, yeah. You know, doctors offices routinely up charge two to three times, what their wholesale cost is. And I like to point out for consumers that it's not just knee braces. Everything that a doctor or hospital might give you to go home. So crutches abreast pump a wheelchair all of those things are up charged heavily by these. Offices says anything patients can do about that. So they're not being charged by the doctors. You know, I think we tend to think of visits to the doctor is kind of all inclusive resorts, but that's not how it works. These days. I'm these days every item is likely to be charged and likely to be charged a lot. So I always tell people don't take anything. You don't feel you need or won't use. And I think you should also ask why you need a fancy version of this rather than the one you could get at your local pharmacy. You could even Google from the doctor's offices, and the like how much would this cost me if I bought it online? So you'll save a ton of money like that. Wow. Okay. I mean, so besides actually finding a corner of the doctor's office to like Google for five or ten minutes and make sure you're not being overcharged is anyone out there. Trying to change this practice and put pressure on doctors offices, not to do this. It's kind of unseemly. But this one is not actually illegal. It's kind of like what restaurants do when they sell you cheap wine for twenty dollars a glass, right? But this is one where being a good consumer can really make a difference. It takes advantage of patients who are unaware and vulnerable. But hey. Now that you know, this happens next time doctor says, hey, your kid's elbow is injured. We'll give you a sling say I'm gonna go buy one at Rite Aid just thinking about the number of people who get these kinds of ankle braces. Knee braces, the stuff you mentioned. I mean, there's a lot of money. The doctor's offices are charging people, and it's not like the half million dollar bills. We sometimes talk about, but as Mr. Serrano said that eight hundred dollars was unexpected. And it meant he couldn't by his kid in iphone for Christmas. So it can make a big difference in people's lives. It sure can all right, Dr Rosenthal. Thanks as always for being here. Thank you. That is Dr Elizabeth Rosenthal. She's editor in chief of Kaiser health news. And if you have a medical Bill that seems kind of inflated or kind of mysterious in some way, something that concerns you want us to have a look at it. Just two shots blog at NPR dot Oregon submitted to us online. Maybe we'll talk about it. This is NPR.

So yeah, this is this is a big deal. What does Disney get? I mean, what what that had the label FOX on. It goes over to Disney. So this is a seventy one point three billion dollar deal and involves two of the biggest studios in Hollywood. So there's a lot of names involved in this and TV and film that folks will recognize so so Disney gets outlets like Twentieth Century, Fox television, which produces shows like empire and modern family. They get FOX animation and National Geographic partners. Now, FOX meanwhile has created this slimmed-down company to include a lot of the stuff that Disney didn't by. "I'm Steve Inskeep. And I'm David Greene surviving R Kelly is a lifetime docu series focusing on sexual abuse allegations against the R&_B artist accusers say Kelly ran a sex cult in Georgia. And in Chicago, Kim, FOX the state's attorney in Cook County, Illinois is encouraging other people to come forward and tell their stories please come forward. There's nothing that can be done to investigate these allegations. Without the cooperation of victims and witnesses. Now lifetime has said that this docu series has reached nearly nineteen million total viewers onto different cable channels, and it is stirring, a debate on social media over why there wasn't more outcry and more investigations sooner. We're joined by NPR TV critic, Eric Dagens. Good morning. Good morning. So this is a lot of yours. And it sounds like there are a lot of people across the country who are talking about this and tweeting about it and having conversations about I mean, what what are what are you paying attention to? Yeah. There's definitely been a lot of conversation. First we should point out that are Kelly in the past has denied allegations. Like this his representatives have pushed back, and so we wanna make sure plane. There's been a tremendous amount of talk about this on social media. Especially lifetime is saying that this docu series is one of the most talked about series on social media in the network's history. And a lot of conversation centers on this idea of can you separate the artists from his music are fans out there who had very emotional sentimental connections to our Kelly hits. Like, I believe I can fly or step in the name of love and they're trying to hold on that in the face of these horrific allegations. But there are the docu series mix of very potent case that are Kelly has used the wealth from these hits to fuel this system that he's created in his life where he has cut off women from their families. He is groomed. Young women for. Sexual interactions, and that he's also denied them food and things like that. So this is a really sort of emotional and turbulent conversation. That's playing out in social media. And it's been fascinating to see. I mean, these accusations have been out there. Right. But it was television that has really caused a lot of. I mean, the investigating the outcry Wh-why dream Hampton, the executive producer of the series talk to me, I interviewed her and she talked about how for some people seeing it on television makes a much bigger difference. Journalists have covered these allegations for many many years. It's been a lot of disclosures about this and the women featured in documentary all of them have made their allegations in public before. But this docu series brings together all of their stories in one potent six part series. And you just see story after story after story, and it really makes a difference seeing them altogether. We're also in this cultural moment, thanks to the metoo movement where we're looking back at past allegations made against people like Kevin Spacey. Louis C K Bill Cosby, Kevin Hart, and re evaluating them in the line of how we feel about believing women when they step forward and talk about being abused. And I think our Kelly is in the center of the that kind of attitude now, and they're really is a racial dynamic too. Many of these conversations. It sounds like. Yeah. I mean, this is about black women being believed and chance the rapper. Did a very did an interview where he talked about. How one reason.

Former CBS CEO Les Moonves Denied $120 Million Severance Package

"This message comes from NPR sponsor Comcast. Comcast values your time. That's why you can schedule to our appointment windows, including nights and weekends that way. You can spend more time doing what you love. Comcast working to make things. Simple, easy, and awesome CBS is accusing les Moonves says of a quote willful failure to cooperate with an investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct. That failure atop the alleged misconduct. Is why CBS is denying him a severance payment of one hundred twenty million dollars? So what if the downfall of a legendary executive mean for his company NPR TV critic, Eric Dagens has covered moon vez and CBS for years. He's here either. Eric, hi, according to CBS, at least, and we should note. Moonves denies wrongdoing broadly. What what what is CBS say moon vested? Well, let's go back move. As was forced to step down back in September. At the New Yorker magazine published allegations from several women. Claiming he had sexually harassed or salted them. So the CBS board wound up hiring to law firms to look in the allegations against moon vase, also harassment or misconduct allegations that CBS news and CBS is wider corporate culture. Okay. So we mentioned an alleged willful failure to cooperate was Moonves supposed to cooperate with those law firms. Yes, they expected him to tell the truth when they asked him questions about his past conduct. Now, we haven't seen the reports that these law firms have created, but the New York Times reported on early drafts of the reports which said that investigators have evidence move as had lied to them and had tried to destroy text showing that he attempted to find acting work for one woman who'd made accusations against him in the board statement, they accused move as a breaching his contract and quote, willful material misfeasance now I had to look that word up, but it means performing an official duty in an improper or unlawful manner move as a turn. He has said in a statement that the conclusions are baseless that his client cooperated fully and that he vehemently denies assaulting. Although possession is nine tenths of the law. CBS has the one hundred twenty million dollars. They say they're keeping the one hundred twenty million dollars unless there's some other preceding we don't know about coming. But that leaves CBS trying to move on from losing its top executive in this in this particular way, how deep does the problem run at CBS. Well, you know, this was a company wants known as the Tiffany network. It bills itself as the most watched broadcast network in America, they have all these popular programs. A nine point five million dollar settlement with actress Elisha deuce coupe who claim the she was harassed while she was working on the CBS drama bull. So there's a lot. And and as a critic, I pointed out CBS's lack of new show starring women for years. The question now is you know, is CBS really going to look harder at its history. Now or just hope everybody moves on after this crisis pass, you're putting on an interesting connection or parallel. We don't know how closely their connected, but we have allegations of private misconduct, and your noting something wrong with the public faces. CBS the opportunities given to women the representation of women CBS doing anything about these kinds of problems. Well, the board says it's created this new position called chief people officer to revamp its human resources departments. They say their diversity and inclusion efforts have been an adequate and they're going to beef them up. They're giving twenty million dollars to several different groups that are working to combat workplace harassment. But the CBS board is her from employees who said that Powell stars. And. Executives were not held accountable at the company and the question is whether CBS is going to hold them accountable now without big stories in the media to pressure them, Eric thanks so much for sheet. "Killing eve wraps up its first season this weekend the series produced by bbc america centers on an intelligence analysts obsession with flamboyant and merciless assassin npr's eric dagens joins us to talk about it hither all right so you know there are a lot of shows on television about remorseless killers of we've got mind hunter on net flicks and barry on hbo what makes killing eve different well here we see this sort of cat and mouse game between two women so sandra oh plays an analyst named eve who works for 'em i five british intelligence and she begins to connect the dots between these murders seem to be unrelated and figures out that this this young female assassin who's out there killing people that they're trying to protect and in fact we've got a clip from the show where she's trying to convince her burntout superior that they really should jump on trying to find this woman eighth what's happened to you you'll never happens now this woman is happening and either someone is stopping it from coming out or someone is too lazy to follow it up are you accusing me of something i don't know maybe she's new and she's prolific bill look it's not been compiling these cases for months tuscany yesterday weird odd showbiz with but it's also boring so what's cool about this to me is that this this is not james bond these are workaday drones who stumble on this huge plot and because there's so much misogyny and kind of male centeredness where she works it's hard for eve to get them to pay attention to what she's found out well you mentioned that sandra oh plays the title character of eve and jodi comber plays villanova the assassin i mean how how do these two characters interrelate and what do you make of how the actors are portraying them well these are two women who are obsessed with each other for different reasons eve of course has the sense that she's tracking this super assassin someone who's very good at what she does the assassin i think seems to be impressed with the fact that eve has figured out that she exists who she is and so there's several periods in the series where she could have killed her but she doesn't because she has almost an affection for.
