Coinbase Experiences Brisk User Growth Ahead of IPO
"Have to take a minute to go over coin basis. Insane q one numbers. We've always even spending a lot of time here this week. On coin base. They announced the date of their ipo last week. And it is slated for april fourteenth. Now part of the reason they delayed their ipo until q two was so that they could release their q. One numbers and boy were they. Monster in total coin base has over fifty six million verified users. Compare that for example to robin hood's thirteen million active users went from two point. Eight million in q four two thousand twenty to six point one million in q one twenty twenty one trading volume in q one was three hundred and thirty five billion compared to one hundred ninety three billion for all of two thousand twenty and total assets on coin base went from ninety billion to two hundred twenty three billion a one hundred and fifty percent jump quarter over. Quarter the craziest part of that one. And certainly validation of the institutional narrative was that one hundred and twenty two million of that two hundred and twenty three billion overall came from institutions. Now the number that people were most focused on was revenue. Revenue was one point eight billion for the quarter compared to one point three billion for all of last year and something that will be absolutely shocking to wall street. The company actually had a net income of seven hundred and thirty million to eight hundred million. Basically this is exactly what the crypto kids knew was coming but still caught. Many wall street analysts off guard. Da davidson raised their price. Target from one hundred ninety five dollars a share to four hundred forty that price target is a twenty x multiple on twenty twenty one revenue. They had previously estimated six hundred and fourteen million in q one revenue which was obviously about a billion dollars off this price target would put coin bases valuation at a whopping. One hundred and forty-four billion dollars

"Around apple is DA Davidson analyst Tom forte his raises price target to three hundred and seventy five dollars a share he started the potential of five G. as his reason apple is already enjoying a rally due to strong iPhone sales in China shares touched intraday records Monday no sonos recently went to war with Google suing the internet search giant for infringing five patents for wireless home speakers Google says its technology was developed independently some believe the latest legal maneuvers away for sonos to get royalties from its designs or prepare for a takeover with more on this story in the overall trend of upstarts fighting against the pull of industry giants is attorney ira Bloomberg voice laughs and brownstone senior executive editor for Bloomberg technology the first friend let me get your take on sonos and Google what does this say sort of about some new specifically and then where we are in the fight against it Amazon right well it's it's kind of a movie we've seen a number of times before in intact I I feel like someone else's kind of having its TiVo moment right it was a pioneer was an innovator it it really introduced the concept of multi room networking with speakers and then in two thousand fourteen there was an earthquake in this market elect Amazon introduced Alexa suddenly speakers were voice activated sauce was a step behind it tried to integrate Alexa and Google technology I'm not qualified to talk about the merits of the lawsuit but clearly if someone else is seeing a market that's racing ahead Google and Amazon discount on their speakers you know TiVo found a path forward in DVRs by licensing its tack and that's the royalty stream that that some of us want to unlock still armor we come to you how does a company like seven us survive in this environment it's a tough one because among other things what was seen as soon as has a fairly high price point and Google and Amazon can sell their products for a lot less money for a couple of re it's my understanding is that the the Google and Amazon products are not as high fidelity but consumers don't seem to be that concerned they're interested in the voice recognition technology and some background music and so that's going to be a problem for some of us because they're in a price squeeze they're having trouble being profitable even if they're hiring hi pricing and they're getting squeezed by the lower end of the market what they appear to be doing is trying to get a royalty stream from the companies that have integrated were allegedly integrated their existing technology well that brings us to a different company Boston now as soon we now Google I I believe apple watch sorry I'm all over the place the apple over there how technology does this case differ or is this the similar issue of a big tech company perhaps allegedly stealing a small companies technology right this one's a little different to me the fact patterns a little bit more troubling us a Massimo is a health tech company makes sensors to monitor like your heart beat apple said it wanted to work with Mossimo in two thousand thirteen and they had meetings and then to a very senior executives of Mossimo went to work at can you guess apple and and now several years later Mossimo suing the company saying you you took our best people and you took our technology the fact pattern if this is one day a jury trial over patent imprint I can print it looks bad but again if it gets down to the merits of the patent which apple will probably try to invalidate them how much apple actually copied the technology will invite you and your story you have this word if you will call the ceilings and explain that to me service seating over market share right it was sort of this playful and grew a word to convey the group of companies who who are pioneers and find themselves seating market share to the big tech platforms Amazon Microsoft Facebook Google you know there's a whole bunch of these companies and look I mean I saw before this is a script we've seen before intact and it's kind of how it works and has worked a bit over decades you know big tech tech platforms emerge and kind of you know become kind of black holes are gravitational centers for technology in the and the little companies they can't succeed right I mean that someone else is still value quite quite highly Spotify you know there many others but it becomes increasingly more difficult do you make what does this show about how some of the smaller tech companies initially want to partner with a big company to work with them but then they do face the rest as we've seen with someone else Fitbit Mossimo were then they are at rest of having some of that technology allegedly stolen well it is it is it's a quandary because for a small company to get traction in the marketplace they frequently do have to interface with and be compatible with existing platforms like Amazon like Google on the hardware side like Microsoft and Intel bomb at the same time if they open the kimono too far they do expose some of their secret sauce which makes it easier for these existing companies to duplicate what the small companies have pioneered the other problem of course is that if you're a small company focused on a single function product you are immediately susceptible to the inevitable integration that the hardware world constantly extras for the the mobile phone is a perfect example of that when they started out you could talk on a mobile phone over the years they incorporated so many more functions cameras moving cameras music players so today you you look back there was once a very healthy I pod and music player market nobody buys anymore you just plug your ear buds for wirelessly connect your buds to your phone so you've got all this integration that has really put aside.

Hasbro’s poor earnings report tells a trade war story
"The calendar proper says it's fall all the counter according to Wall Street says it's earning season and in general corporate America's doing alright that sentiment however does not extend to Hasbro the third quarter was not kind the toymaker reported profits of this morning that we're well below estimates of earnings news that is actually the story of the trade war in miniature three of tariff announcements and delays and the chaos that makes it one company just ahead of its most important season marketplace's Merrill Sagarra tells the tale in the Toy Business Chris Miss Comes in the summer that's when retailer start stocking up getting shipments of toys from Hasbro and other manufacturers they can buy those toys directly from Hasbro in the US were they can import the toys from Hasbro factories the retailer buys the product from them in China the retailer puts it on their own ship you know there's a lot mark target the big guys and they ship it to the US themselves that's Linda Bolton Wiser managing director at Da Davidson? She says a lot of retailers do this because it's cheaper they get discounts is an economy of scale but the calculation was different this summer retailers were staring down a deadline September first that was when new tariffs were supposed to go into effect on toys and lots of other stuff coming from China tariffs the retailers did not want to pay therefore if you're a retailer between June and July August you're saying Oh my God we have to change the order retailers started cancelling their shipments from China they told Hasbro to import the toys itself and tariffs to Hasbro had to scramble they had the rush around and get whatever freight on the ocean from China and they had to pay more you're but those tariffs everyone was freaking out about they didn't go into effect in September in August the trump administration delayed them until mid December to save the holiday. being season but that didn't help Hasbro the toys have already been put on the bow it takes six weeks on the boat so it's too late you can't switch it back you know and that's the problem it's not just the tariffs it's the whole on again off again thing the uncertainty Garrick Johnson is equity research analyst at B. M. O. Capital markets uncertainty is often worse than bad news because you do assume the worst and not knowing how to plan especially for very seasonal business has been very different old and this won't be the end of it for Hasbro because those tariffs are still slated to go into effect on December fifteenth unless they don't I'm Maryelle Sagarra for marketplace
California's "Uber law" could affect millions of workers
"Assembly bill five baby five is the shorthand isn't even the law out here yet. It's the bill. The legislature passed earlier this week that would oblige rideshare companies like lift an uber declassified drivers employees. He's not independent contractors. We told you about a couple of days ago anyway. It's not even the law yet but lawsuits have already been filed in the meantime though drivers are still trying to make a living in the GIG economy lift changed. Its rules not too long ago to get more money to drivers in congested areas but not everybody loves that from K. Q. E. D. Sonia Hudson has more for around four years ago. Lifts started paying drivers a bonus to go to areas where there was a lot of demand for rides but not enough cars like North Oakland during rush shower and under that system drivers would get a fair multiplier say one point four times what they would normally earn on that ride you would for those hours. Ours is difficult as they were that you would make a decent hourly rate for those. That's Lawrence wigger. She's been driving part time for left for the past five years. We're sitting in her car. In Oakland where she lives in likes to drive swagger says under the old system she could make around two hundred dollars a week driving two hours during rush shower every day or about twenty dollars an hour then lift came up with a new payment system for areas where there's high demand for drivers and called it personal power power zones now. I think I would be lucky to make one hundred dollars swagger as part of a group called GIG workers rising which says it works with more than nine hundred drivers in California -fornia in as opposed to the switch. We actually jokingly call them. Personal poverties zones the new system uses flat rate bonuses say a four dollar are bonus regardless of the length of the ride under the old system swagger could sometimes make twelve dollars bonus on a thirty dollar ride and now sometimes it. Max Out out at four dollars so four dollars instead of twelve dollars is obviously ridiculous. Incentive Uber uses a combination of flat. Ah Bonuses like personal power zones and percentages like the old lift system lift wouldn't make anybody available for an on the record interview but the company maintains while bonuses are smaller more drivers are getting them lift says that personal power zones were designed to be more predictable stable equitable and stable for writers to when when it comes to pricing lift points out the change hasn't driven up fares and that's true for writer jared. Lee do a music composer who uses both lifting Uber and Oakland during rush hour. I haven't noticed a big difference in fact La- do only learned about the change in lifts driver bonuses when I mentioned it to him. He says he's concerned about drivers is but that the new information is probably not going to deter him from using uber or left. I would use it more to get from back to my house so I probably would still use one of them because I don't want to do. The work. Lift says on average driver earnings across the country have increased over the last two years but it doesn't release rot brought earnings data. Tom White is an analyst who follows lift for the Financial Services Company. Da Davidson. He says that the change generally resulted in drivers seeing their payouts reduced. How does he figure that. Lift takes a percentage of all fares and white says that the company's been taking about eight percent more or from those fares over the last two years you know the main contributor to that increase is that drivers are earning less than than they used to lift argues the addition of bike computer services accounts for the increase it takes one hundred percent of the fees on those since there's no driver to pay but white says bikes and scooters are only a small share of of lifts overall business not enough to account for that eight percent increase white says the reality is lifted trying to make a profit lift loss more than nine hundred million dollars last year. You know investors won't be patient forever. The company went public. This year and white says lift is keen to demonstrate to shareholders. It does have a plan to become profitable double eventually. The question for drivers is whether working for lift is still profitable enough for
