Stocks jump as Wall Street cruises to best day since January
"Stocks rallied in Friday trading, sending Wall Street to its best day in 6 weeks. Easing yields in the bond market have taken some of the pressure off of stocks. The Dow gained 387 points or 1.2%. The S&P 500 rose 1.6%, capping off its first winning week in about a month. And the NASDAQ gained back 2%. New data showed the economies in better shape than some had thought. Growth for services industries last month was stronger than what economists had predicted. Analysts say this helps ease worries about an imminent recession, but it could also add pressure on inflation. The next move by the fat on interest rates is scheduled for later this month. Alex McFarland and Eric Discuss the Subject of Natural Law
"We're talking about everything and you said people need to attend to the life of the mind. I mean, I think it was something that we did in this culture for most of our history, people had to understand the basics of how things work, what is liberty? What is right and wrong? How do you get right and wrong? And you were talking earlier about what Lewis C. S. Lewis calls the Dow this inherent sense that every human being has, this conscience of between right and wrong. We all know it. You don't need to be a baptized Christian to know that stealing and murder are wrong. And it brings us maybe to the subject of natural law. The genius legal scholar Hadley Arcus has written a book coming out in a few months called mere natural law. That God's law right and wrong is that the basis of everything. You can not have a constitution unless you understand these things that precede whatever is written in the constitution. Do you know doctor Martin Luther King Jr. predicated the entire validity of the civil rights movement on natural law? If you read his 1963 Pulitzer Prize winning book while we can't wait, brilliant book, by the way, and he quotes Augustine Aquinas in letter from the Birmingham jail. He basically appeals to natural law that we're all human beings, regardless of our ethnicity, we're humans. And if one human has natural rights, all humans have natural rights. Now, Jefferson two, when he used the words in the declaration, we all these truths to be self evident. That all endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights. That's natural law.

Dow Jones plummets more than 400 points after inflation report
"Another disappointing inflation report thumps Wall Street. I'm Lisa dwyer. Stocks fell by the most in four weeks following more evidence that high inflation is staying stickier than expected. The S&P dropped 1.4% after a report set inflation at the wholesale level slowed by less last month than economists had forecast. It echoed a report on prices at the consumer level from earlier this week that suggested inflation isn't cooling as quickly and as smoothly as hoped. The Dow was down 431 points or 1.3%, while the NASDAQ dropped 1.8%. Stocks have been turning recently as worries about persistently high inflation could push the Federal Reserve to get even more

Predicting the Future of DAOs
"Right, so first question I have is I've met some people that are major evangelists of dows. They think dows are going to completely change the future and are super innovative and I personally don't quite see that just yet, but again, I'm not involved in a dowel so maybe I'm missing something but to me they resemble company with voting rights or social clubs like Soho house. So I'm curious what your take is on what innovation and how much progress a doubt can contribute versus existing models. So I think dows are really exciting because when I left college I was pretty determined to start a company and so you go through all the steps of forming an LLC and that can be kind of a barrier of entry to a lot of people. Then you have the ability to as people were unifying and things that they were all commonly interested in on Reddit. A lot of people have explained daos as a Reddit with a bank account, which I think is kind of cool and a little bit accurate. So instead of people having to go and figure out how to start a company, there's all these dows created whether they're social Dow's investment dials or product dials. But something that everyone's interested in, where they can essentially go and it's fully automated and they can onboard themselves and essentially start or be a part of a company very seamlessly without having to go through the LLC registration, eins plugged into a bank account. All the other additional tax burdens that go with that as well. So I think it's kind of cool that you can very easily go and become a part of something that's interesting to you.

Wall Street ticks higher as hot US inflation cools further
"Another sign that inflation is slowing as given the stock market, something to rally about. Wall Street closed higher after a new report on consumer prices showed some moderation last month in inflation. Today we've got some good news. President Biden announcing inflation declined to 6 and a half percent in December. Compared to the same time last year and down from 7.1% the previous month. He says lower gas prices help. Biden administration took action to get oil on to the market and bring down prices. But analysts are flagging some caution with the lower numbers, Mark Hamrick at bankrate dot com. We're still seeing some upward pressure coming from food prices as well as the measure for shelter or housing. Wall Street Is Bracing Itself for a Challenging 2023
"A time like this, I want to turn to the economy because market was up most on Monday and I was looking at it saying, you know what? It just doesn't make any sense. It really doesn't, and then sure enough, in the last hour of trading, we wound up losing over a hundred points on the Dow, which did actually make sense. And the reason why losses make sense at a time like this is because there's more where that came from. If you know what I mean. Look, we've got a very troubled economy right now. We've got lots of inflation that is not going to go away. We've got a Federal Reserve that now is coming out a couple of members of the fed actually said today a couple of fed board governors rates would be above 5% for a long time, already we're seeing an increase in the number of layoffs in the news Goldman Sachs prominent financial firm saying that it's going to slash 3200 jobs. That's a lot that's a pretty big deal because it's anticipating these really challenging times in 2023. You have Amazon, laying off 18,000, you have Macy's closing stores. I mean, look all the handwriting is there. It should, politically, be setting the Republican Party up for home run in 2024 because Americans are going to be kind of desperate by that point for change for something better. However, I would constant this. It's really important that the Republican Party get its act together. It's really important that these kinks get worked out in the here and now, and we can't actually wait until the 11th hour in 2024. Joe Biden is running again he made that very clear he had time apparently to think on his fancy vacation in the Caribbean at a donor's home that he was staying at. I suspect the Democrat party may be somewhat relieved at this because their options were looking so good. I mean, Kamala Harris, you just can't put her out there. I'm telling you anyone can beat Kamala Harris.
Ethereum Classic ETC Price Balloons To Nearly 30 In Last 7 Days
"10 a.m. Sunday January 8th, 2023. Ethereum classic ETC price balloons to nearly 30 in last 7 days. Ethereum classic ETC, a decentralized, open-source and blockchain based cryptocurrency might soon lose its current momentum that allowed it to become one of the top performing crypto assets for the past week. A quick review at some data points for the digital acid reveals that it is currently treating in an overbought position which might cause buyers to be exhausted and unable to sustain a further rally yielding technical advantage to the bears once again. Moreover, the altcoins bollinger bands indicate that it is extremely volatile at the moment, making it susceptible to significant price swings that could happen in just a wink of an eye. This makes Ethereum classic a more risky asset to trade or hold. Related reading Leto Dow surges by more than 57 in just a week more games up ahead image Cohen pedia Ethereum classic, a quick glance at impressive run, according to latest tracking from Coen gecko, at the time of writing, ETC was changing hands at 19.82. Although the crypto has declined by two over the last 24 hours, it is still enjoying a nearly 30 jump from its value 7 days ago. Moreover, on a biweekly basis, the digital token tallied and upswing of 20.3. During the last few days, Ethereum classic was among the few cryptocurrencies that managed to post double digit gains within the previous week led by Solana, which surged by an astonishing 35. As for the reason, some experts believe that the pivotal turnaround in the hash rate of the ETC towards the end of 2022 paved the way for minor profitability which, in turn, increased the number of transactions processed by the asset's network. In fact, during the last two days, Ethereum classic transaction counts surged and hit a new monthly high. Following this, ETC recorded a 12 increase in its trading price, indicating that the spike in volume triggered an upward movement for the altcoins value. Related reading Matic advances 6.5 in last 7 days can it sustain gains for another week ETC total market cap at 2.7 billion on the weekend chart chart trading view dot com, preparing for possible price drawback despite being in the green for more than a week now. Ethereum classic is still haunted by the negative weighted sentiment that denotes bad convictions that investors harbor for the digital token. Holders and prospective buyers are therefore advised to be cautious as non positive sentiment is usually followed by a price retracement. Coincidence, however, seems to disagree with this thesis as its forecasts for ETC remains bullish despite technical indicators saying otherwise. In fact, the online crypto data provider predicts the digital coin will change hands at 19.765 days from now and will make another massive surge within the next 30 days to trade at 47.48. "This is fast money live from the NASDAQ market site on the desk tonight. You have Tim Seymour. Steve Grasso, Bono and eisen and Courtney Garcia. It's wonderful to be with you all. Let's start with that major reversal. We saw on Wall Street the Dow. The S&P 500 and the NASDAQ selling off into a holiday weekend, the Dow swinging 700 points from high to low, and the NASDAQ now down nearly 12% from its August highs. And yeah, it's just September 2nd. Anxiety on the energy front overwhelming a Goldilocks jobs report. Gazprom reporting the Nord stream pipeline would stay closed until an engine oil leak is repaired, natural gas prices dropping by 4% despite that news. Tim, you pointed to this as a reason for the swing lower. The charts really show that very clear picture and the direction change right around when that news came out. Yeah, and previous to that news court, great to see you. It was news that the U.S. and Europe and at least western nations were going to put a cap on what they would pay for Russian oil, Russia quickly responds and make no mistake. Nord stream is not closed for repairs. Nord stream is closed for geopolitical tactical counter move. And in terms of markets, we digest it all week where the EU was in terms of not only gas storage levels, Germany is probably at 85%. There's a lot of people that feel across the EU that their storage levels get them through the winter season, but either way, this type of both hostility and the gamesmanship underscores the problems that Europe has and the problems that really the globe has with energy supply right now. By the way, OPEC meeting next week on Monday while most people will be sitting by the barbecue. So with great irony, of course, it's energy that was the only thing that was up this week, which is of course where Putin gets his life brought from. So I just think the payroll number was important. I would underscore two things. One is that, yes, we had downward revisions. So the labor numbers were not as strong as they could have been, but most importantly, was that this participation rate almost 800,000 more folks into the job market, bringing up the unemployment rate. And that's actually good news. And the fed needs more of this. And obviously, targeting labor is something they won't talk about, but it's something that they are. Grouse are obviously a number of things that we could talk about, but I do want to get your take on what was going on with the news of the Gazprom situation. We know there's an energy crisis already going on in Europe. There does seem to be more worry or more certainty that Europe could go into a recession still debate about what happens for us here. So the news that came out today that did certainly change the direction in the market. Is it a worry that will continue beyond the weekend? Or was this just a heightening up of that hostility as Tim is talking about? How much do you need to factor this into your portfolio decisions out of this long weekend going into the fall? Well, this is going to be an ongoing headlines court. We've seen these headlines on an ongoing basis, pretty repetitious. So you're going to have to, if you're going to invest, you're going to have to invest around these things. With the market as a whole, these headlines. There are tape reading algos. What do I mean by that? You see that headline go, ten pointed it out. You saw the market turn pretty close to when that tape won that headline was released. The tape goes south. You have tape reading algos that react to it and sell stocks. It's not a hole as a whole, it's not an overwhelming percentage of the overall market, but when you get a market going into a three day weekend, it's going to react to that. No different than we have the market react to the jobs number today. Tim did a good job of job of outlining those data points. It was not hot, not cold just right type of event, but we've all talked about this and you were here last week when we were talking about it with Steve leishman, who got angry at traders, not us, but traders for not seeing exactly what the fed was going to be doing. What we're not looking for a pivot, what we're looking for is not even a pause. We're looking for a change of pace from the fed. And I think this number gave a little bit of hope for a change of pace. I do still think they'll go with 75. Because the market gave them 75 and gave them a window to go for it. So with that, I think the market has an ability to move sort of sideways to lower. I think it's definitely a risk off trade for the next foreseeable couple of weeks or so. Courtney, how do you read that jobs report number that we got this morning? Certainly it feels like most of us agree. It was somewhat Goldilocks, but what does it mean for what the fed may or may not do? And how they're reading this latest data point. Yeah, well, the fed has said over and over again that strong labor market is one of the things that has been keeping them from being able to stop their aggressive rate hikes. And so we really need to see that come down here.

"So I think our historian could speak better to that but I'm pretty sure that Herbert Dow began with loving to grow in the gardens Misses Dow didn't really wasn't really involved in a lot of that but she loved to grow in the gardens and I always on my tours talk to people about how farmers and agriculture people from across the country would reach out to him and ask questions about an insect or a pest or some problem they were having and he did sometimes try to use his chemistry to experiment with solutions for them So I like to say that was kind of the beginning of Dow egg or sciences I think he had these two passions and they did come together really well Yeah I've always assumed that's the case Now when you come to dall gardens today you come into the beautiful building and you get some understanding of what you're going to see And then you walk out into the gardens Tell us about that experience Yeah so when you walk out of the back of our main visitor center you have a lot of options You can stay to your left and you can proceed on into our more formal botanical garden where you'll see annual flower displays perennial flower displays and shrubs make your way to the historic home The other option you have is to head to the right and go over a pedestrian bridge over into what we call the lighting forest of Dale gardens So there are quite a variety of options We do find that people who hold our annual passes tend to come back again and again because a 110 acres is a lot of place based to cover So it's fun to see people and what they prefer to do When you ask those people how recently have you been here if it's been since 2018 they may have a very distinct space that they prefer to explore Those people that haven't been here ever or haven't been here in a long time Find that they have a lot of choices to make or they get to spend the entire day Well I have to say the Canopy walk is spectacular and I want to ask you more about that in a second but the plant life that people are going to see a doubt this time of year as we're kind of in that early.

"Tone and we've come to the of this agreements paramount plus for me over. I wanna bring it back to more technical questions. And be a bummer. How does a dow work like what near opinion like what is a dow and what are the technical tools you need to make one work and why today's available dow infrastructure like sufficient. For what you've done. Yeah dow's have an interesting history. Starting in ultimate back in twenty sixteen area anywhere else with the first thing called the dow the dow and something like ten or twenty percent of all the theory in the world got sucked up into this thing because people wanted to invest in it and then there is an exploit in blew up in that ultimately caused the theory. I'm in the classic to hard for in different directions. So dow has some baggage and no one used that term for a few years but it has crept back into the macular In part because of defy because people are building decentralized financial tools and a lot of these teams are building it without accompanying existing at all. They're there is open source software but it's opens our software combined with a token where value cruel happens and that intersection is essentially a doubt. It's an organization a loose dynamic organization of people that all share interest in one token and generally the governance of where a project goes falls to the token holders. So a dow is similar to a corporation in that value cruel befalls the token of the dow and the governance in voting of where this thing goes befalls on the token whereas in a corporation all that happens at the share level so there are certainly similarities between these things. Dow's are not all alike. They're all being experimented with. You can have a dow of two or three people or dow of ten thousand nine hundred thousand people. You could have a dow that was organized around a very tiny little project. People cared about or dow created like a one trillion dollar financial. Application knows unstoppable arguably bitcoin. Itself is a dow argue. That's a loose usage of the term. But it certainly is made possible by that same technology and the defining features. Now are you get these tools tooling around the governance.

"Day of the year falling more than seven hundred points and check out the ten year yield healing. One point one nine percent just two weeks ago. Your next guest said one and a quarter percent was the key level to watch for yield. So now that we've crashed below that where are we headed premier. Let's go off the charts with chris brown of strategic. Chris take it away carnahan. This i think going through one. Twenty five is certainly a psychological break of what people perceived to be a very important level. But let's keep things in perspective. You'll peaked at one. seventy five. In march they were something like fifty sixty basis points at this point last summer. That one ten to one. Twelve range is the fifty percent mid point between those two levels. So i think it's early to say this has been some apocalyptic breakdown here. I do suspect you'll ultimately autumn somewhere in this one. Ten twelve fifteen. We had seen sentiment shift dramatically over the last number of weeks from inflation fears just a month ago to row fears cova fears right now so i think the sentiment on the street is changing. That's helpful and i think ultimately putting low in on yield as far as what this means for equities i want to show you an important slide. Something we've been talking about in our work over really the last month or two that the correction that we saw inequities today really can be traced back many weeks for many months ago. The average stock one thousand stock is actually already down about an percents From the high. So there's been weekdays under the surface for awhile industrial renounce something like ten. The average bidding stock is down about ten as well if you go to even some of the week pockets of this market the average material stock down about thirteen average discretionary down about the same average energy stock down about sixteen. So you know this. Correction is not one day all a lot of these groups. The average issue really peaked about two months or so ago. So if we put this in context of the broader and several have mentioned it di- you talked about it. Then you talk about at the fifty day. Moving average has been big support along the way. I'm not convinced it's gonna ultimately hold through the summer two hundred days about thirty eight ninety five adding about five points day i do think ultimately the snp and the two hundred will meet somewhere around four thousand over the next month or two. So what do we want to own in that arm in. This is gonna sound silly. But i think the best events year may actually offense. The pockets of the marketing have already corrected. Are frankly pretty oversold. A under the surface. I wanna the industrials. This is the x. ally and that bottom panel are the flows into an out of the x. ally. You really seem complete liquidation already. Over the last several months utah flows through next ally. The correction here has already happened. I think if we get another leg lower in the broader market. It's the big tech way. It's the fame. Wish that get you there. It's the offensive. Sickles like industrials may actually prove to be defensive. This time around. Thank you very much. Christopher breaking down the move on the tenure getting a lot of attention today. Let's trade at tim. What do you make of the moves today in what the bond market is telling us. Well i mean first of all. Here's a psa for when yields eventually get to one seventy five or god forbid two percents folks. This is a good thing. It's not reason to jump out of windows. And i you know it's it's it's extraordinary that that that's also where we were But so so. Look if chris right One twelve to one fifteen or maybe even here Jeff brings up carter's note either way Who's been most highly sensitive to the moving rates it's been banks We come through an earnings period where people forget the credit quality in the banking. Sector's as good as it's been in a long long time i'm not gonna say in my lifetime but you know who knows and also what the banks have also gone through in terms of their ability to Pass capital standard tests and get more back to investors Also just a trend we've seen in bank earnings over the last four or five years. Which is that. They don't trade well when they get the earnings announcements. And as you start to sort through here. I think you're gonna see a lot of the bank start to rally so look after all this pain Both in banks exactly christmas theme some of these places to play offense to me. Our financials industrials. I'm not sure. I'm ready to go there because i think there's still going to be a lot more concern around growth i don't think the delta variant concerns go away for another four to six weeks but I do think banks have priced in a lot of pain. And you've gotten reaffirmation of credit quality capital markets plans guy. What do you make of the charts. That mister barone brought us to ten year which fascinating of christmas on thursday and he said the was probably going down to one and a quarter hold and bouncing quite frankly. That's exactly what happened if you do. Remember traded under one twenty five trading days later ten year yields to one forty one so that was a prussian. call. I didn't see this move down to one thousand nine coming. I don't think. Chris necessarily did either but what he said then is holds shoe. Now you're still talking about an upward sloping moving average. Which typically it bodes pretty. Well if you think rates go higher which. I do so didn't see this one coming but i do think rates go higher from here. Well coming up the.

"We haven't earnings alert. Ibm shares jumping in. The after hours is the company's called gets underway. It's over to josh lipton. He's got more josh. So courtney heading into this print remember. Ibm was up about ten percent this year. That was down about ten percent from its fifty two week high and now heading higher though here in the after hours as for the results beats on the bottom and the top as for the forecast ibm singing continues to expect revenue growth for the year. I did check in with moshe. Catchy over wedbush. He covers the name. He's actually called this in his opinion. A mixed performance cloud growth decelerating sequentially but on the positive side. He says red hat growth accelerating also says improvements in services revenue and margins. He maintains a neutral rating on the stock on the call. Co arvind krishna saying ibm continues to make progress. The overall spend environment he says continues improvement industries. He notes are getting back on track. Ibn is on track. He says to achieve its financial expectations for the year. There have been changes. Says like jim whitehurst stepping down from his role. But jimmy says remains a strong believer in. Ibm and we understand his desire to become an investor back to you will thank you very much josh. Let's trade this one. Tim what do you make here. Of course ibm has not been one of the highest performing tech names. As of late we know microsoft is certainly outperformed at oracle as well. But does that mean. There's opportunity here. Is it time to still just sit back and wait on the red hat former. Ceo departure. I don't like that news. I don't like the deceleration and growth there. I even though. I think that was an important acquisition to get them moving in the right direction so eleven acquisitions this year eight more last year. I mean it's a company that is trying. The tuck in route is doing whatever they can And yet revenue growth still very stagnant. I don't think it's terribly cheap. We've been having this kind of conversation about about. Ibm two years ago possibly three years ago. I it's hard to be overly negative with the direction that the companies Taken and i think they're in the right businesses and they're moving in the right businesses in leveraging the overall network of their of their enterprise client base. But not chasing that one here especially with the pullback and broader tech there's better places to be general mills big blue gonna make some big green are not so much the opposite sides of this friday on traded or faded. I was. I was in the camp. I was reasonably pleased with the growth rates in terms of revenue. Eps margins are paying down debt. Which i like. So it's definitely in this. Show me phase for investors but i think this quarter was probably good enough. Think you see the stock up in after hours probably reflective of that but did mention the high dividend yield so almost five percent there. You have a little bit of a margin of safety. And i really do think they're committed to this growth You know whether it's the kindle spin out whether it's the blue tab acquisition they just announced me they have a lot going on and they also have a reasonably strong free cash flow position. So they'll be able to invest back in some of those areas of the market That i think are going to be able to drive growth for them. Obviously over three thousand and hybrid cloud clients now that continues to be a positive for the company so i still think he can take a chance on the stock here. I like being in the value side of technology right. Ibm shares are higher after hours as that conference call continues coming up..

"So wow what a. What a remarkable several years. It's been during your time and your tenure as chief information officer dow has been through major acquisitions. It's been through multiple major Divestitures as well yours is an organization generally speaking but an it organization more specifically that has had to foster a tremendous amount of change and stand up as well as spin out a lot of parts of the organization and think about the people process and technology implications of each of those things. I want and what one of the fascinating changes that you've ushered in is a changing. It's orientation more towards service delivery. And i wonder if you can take the story from there and talk a bit about i. Why maybe talk a bit about the specifics of service delivery as as it's defined within your organization as well as some of the methods you have used in order to bring that about scherer. Thank you peter and happy to be here. You have been through tremendous change over the last few years with the Like you said the merge of two companies and spin out of three companies which davis a great opportunity to drive changes and really Early-on start driving some of our digital transformation which put us in a really good position As the pandemic But one of the key changes from as an it organization we help drive. Change across the whole company Several years ago. When i took over as cio we put a strategy in place which was really a not an it strategy it was really a it strategy for the company or the organization and as part of that we really changed our approach To how we how we execute in in in nis we focused on the customer experience the employment experience and working at the speed of business and we really went into our approach to devops very differently from others that we've in that we've designed our approach around services versus products and i think that's really based on the nature of our business in the products that we sell and i went in and flipped everything we do in it.
