Tips every Django developer should know

"This first tip that have this is like one of the main things that I think of is like it comes with these building block pieces that say Flask Impure Pyramid and. Bass APN. What just don't come with like Admin back ends Yup. That's where we're going to start off. So Django clearly comes at batteries included and some people actually don't like that because they've under rule their own and they think itself. I happen to like their preferences and yeah, one of those well-known building blocks as the admin interface at and it's it's pretty impressive. But a few lines of code you. You can just add your model, an avid pie file, and you have to complete crowd interface, which is probably pretty end user. But as a maintain earth, this site it's it's pretty convenient and it's also very easy to extend it. So for example, taking admin class here, you can define some search fields. which makes those field searchable. You can have even have out a complete fields which they integrated the jobless Ritz. You can override to get crazy set and. Yeah. It's a nice way of inheriting from the Admin Dots Model Admin blasts Yeah. So it comes out of the box just. Kind of think of it as like. Google sheets or something for your database, right? Right. Where each table is like a tab or a sheet and sit in the workbook or whatever the terminology of Google sheets is. But the task. The bottom writes something I mean not necessarily stimuli. But that idea that you have like a grid over top of it. But what you're telling me is I can go into rive special classes that are tied to the various. Tables the models more specifically in it lets you search different aspects of it. Lets you cool. Auto completion. You could also say like limit how many items come back in your search results per page. So you don't get a million or something like that, right? Yeah. Do a list filter, for example, and then certain columns at the right side of the page. You can filter on them by clicking. Just. With one nine of coach. So this does raise some Cole functionality and I think, maybe in the show notes, we can link to a Django adleman cookbook, I use a loss which has like the hands. On. I. Might have mentioned before actually on pie down the vice then the umbrella from that book. That's like fifty pages and. Yeah Very. Workable. Super Bowl. Another thing you can do is you can write a function called get query set and actually do things like be joyner, do a joined queries against other things. Otherwise you may it up with like the N plus one problem of Orum's were doing queer than everything that comes back. You have to do more queries per item to try to fill out the details, I will talk about that in in one of the tips. Yeah. Yeah. Awesome. That's super cool. Let's see what else you want to say about that I. You know I was it. You think it might have been you either you or damn baiter. baiter from real python talking about using this to actually trigger events as you interact with this adman was that you think that was me. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So tell us that's like I. think that's pretty related. Tell people by the pretty. Cool. Right. We spoke about that on Python Bites Yeah. Thank God. We did was in one of the at model self variety safe method, and then the object plus created, and only then do a certain action. He likes emailing people in Hindsight. That's probably better to do it a salary task by it's an example how you can override those methods and do certain things. Yeah. Pretty easily. Yeah very cool. All right remember to or magic. Yeah. Well, Dan go comes with its own orem object relational napper and it's kind of a proxy today. So you don't have to ride s all yourself although i. Am such a fan. I'm saying, well, you worked at, Oracle, didn't you? Fan of orange actually or in the nurse sequel world maybe od M.'s or or some. are might not necessarily make sense, but you know there's so many issues you can run into if you don't use parameters, queries, little bobby tables, and all those issues and just like if you get the rock queries back and you pull different values sometimes you forget to convert this thing to an integer and it's just a string that has an energy in it that sort of. All these little weird edge cases right now you're as. With. Orum's at kind of. Like a layer that just separates like how your data should be transformed I. Really Love It. I, think it's great. I know one hundred percent work all the time. Right? There's places where it doesn't. But that's not as you know like most the time it's a it's a beautiful thing and it's it's a nice obstruction and it's way easier to use and more elegant.

How to find yor life's purpose

"What we learn about life from fairy tales by Jeff Goings of goings writer dot com. At the beginning of every great story before anything exciting happens we see something that looks a lot like normal life long before the protagonists Lazy Dragon or the heroine embarks on a quest we see her in some unsuspecting place dreaming of something more in beauty and the beasts my personal favorite Disney. Classic Bell Sings of wanting more than this provincial life in Star Wars. Luke can't wait to escape the boredom of a farmer's life and in the wizard of Oz dorothy sings about life somewhere over the rainbow. Is Easy to dismiss such people when we meet them in everyday life as dreamers or even downright crazy but are they really. Pleased get up early on Saturday mornings write essays that I would then save on my computer and share with no one a dreamed of publishing my stories somewhere. But for years, they never left the comfort of my living room. I'm not alone in this. This dreaming of another life does a preoccupation of Bailey and it's a wonderful life and the fixation of Walter Mitty is the reason we sometimes daydream or stay up late watching movies. Our lives are haunted by the ghosts of one might have been. Here's the good news though this is where story always starts with an unrealized dream hope deferred a life lived before chain of events sets the hero on a course to his destiny. Sense that there should be more to life than this. But hopefully that's not where the story ends. An important moment everything begins to make sense. There's a with storytellers call the inciting incident. The moment when the characters perspective changes the tale of an average person living in average life becomes one of mythic proportions but something has to happen for any of this to take place the character must choose to enter the story. Bell goes to find her father. Luke leaves home with OBI Wan. Dorothy, get swept up in a tornado in any great narrative. There's a moment where character decides to be more than a bystander that's really want a story begins with the decision to act. This choice though is often preceded by a link of discontent, which is why when people are called to some great task, they know it they recognize the prompting to do something significant something bigger than themselves and then respond. Why because they've been waiting for it their whole lives. Frustration prepares you for your purpose. My friend Ben Armed says every dream begins with frustration. Think that's true. But that frustration must be funneled into awareness that leads to action. Otherwise, it becomes bitterness. You must be willing to do something to step out into the unknown and see what happens. Until you make this choice, you'll continue feeling frustrated seeing other people succeed chalking it up to lock or some unfair advantage. You'll be jealous and critical wonder why not me and in doing this, he will deceiver self. Because, the truth is some do yet lucky and others have been born into privilege. But what are those things to you? You are still called chances come to us all but only those who are ready recognize them. So before you know what you're calling is your believe your call to something even if you don't know what it is yet that nagging said everything is not as it should be that you were meant for more than the status quo is important clue and what you do with that is essential to how your story unfolds with this means is you don't need some big plan. You just need to be a little dissatisfied with the way. Things are to possess a premonition that something is amiss and you may hold the keys fixing it.

It's been almost odd years but yeah, we were or I should say many people on the team as well. But. We We were super early adapters before it became a thing. Kid Genyk Guy. It was starting to circulate in the biohacking community about five years ago. Maybe five miss closest six years ago when I started and and you know it was it was getting around biohacking community had not yet gone mainstream. But. Yeah, we were there early and still still big believers. Yeah I mean what was it? That got you into everything being was just the sort of request to optimize your personal health. It was an actually that would be a little bit more glamorous but it was really about vanity I had I had reached a weight loss plateau. It wasn't really overweight and in any way because I've been biohacking and sort of. been. In, and out Akita Genyk. Diet. Really since the eighties with the Atkins Diet but I had been eating a lower car diet for quite some many years. So it wasn't really overweight but I really wanted to lean out. And I I was at a weight loss plateau and low carb just wasn't doing it, and so that's I experimented with Kito that way and then the weight loss went away pretty quickly as it tends to do for most people in fact, lost a lot more weight than I had anticipated. And then sort of what I thought was a set point and a place I wanted to be but I continued the Ketogenic Diet in fact. Double down on it and really became therapeutically Ketogenic, which is different than Akita. Diet. or a modified Keto Diet, which is the way I would describe my diet today but. But I experimented with really therapeutic Ketogenic, which is super high fat and and and a lot of blood testing and a lot of kind of quantification and. You know the cognitive benefits for me. became. So extraordinary that I just stayed on the Diet, even though I didn't have any plans of further white. House.

Delayed Umbilical Cord Clamping After Birth

"Before we dive into the interview with her, we're going to continue our little. Introduction. Birth plans series we've talked about preparing for your GB as test. We've talked about Bernie we've talked about all sorts of different things and today. I'm just going to touch on delayed cord clamping because it is something. So as a Dula. I started practicing in Vegas years ago, and at the time, not one provider would do it and it is something that is very beneficial for your children. And now more research is coming out saying that it is. Something that you should definitely consider putting in your birth plan and talking to your provider about so. According to. The. Pregnancy Association. It. Can Be very beneficial when he will allow the cord to. You don't clamp right away and you allow it to pulse for twenty five seconds up to five minutes after giving. Birth it allows blood to transfer from the placenta to the baby. Sometimes increasing the child's blood volume by up to a third there's tons of amazing iron stores in there. which is really good for healthy brain development also according to the a dot Org, which is the American College of obstetricians and gynecologists. It talks about how? DELETE UMBILICAL CORD clamping increases haemoglobin levels at birth in improved iron stores in the first several months of life, which may be very favorable for developmental outcomes. It can prevent NIMIA. A lot of kids can sometimes be Nimick in the first six months of life and with delayed cord clamping. Less and less, but with any decision you're making. It's also really important to know Not only benefits but the the potential risks and things like that. The only downside that they can see is that sometimes there is a small increase in John. Indus that might require therapy. In a certain group of infants. So there's the benefit of getting all that extra blood in iron stores and that helps with brain development and preventing anemia. But there is a very slight increase chance of having jaundice. So I can actually say in all my years practicing for anybody who has done it I have not seen jaundice case but I know that that research is out there that does back that. So as long as you have the information to. Make the best decision for yourself and for your family and have this conversation with your healthcare provider that to me I feel like is what counts I know that something that we're planning on doing it's a standard practice where. I am delivering so and we do touch on it. Next week a midwife is going to be on and she's going to just touch on it briefly, but I just wanted to go over the. So few are making your birth plan. Definitely look into delayed cord clamping I'm going to leave the links to these articles. In today's show

Validating Your Goals

"Guess. What Day it is it is Monday and that means today just like I've done every Monday since two, thousand six. I've asked you if you have taken a few minutes to ponder where your life is the good. The bad. The. Ugly. I've asked you to to do your homework. To look into what you like and want to keep and make sure you do like make sure you do want to keep it in can keep it. To look into what you don't like it. Maybe you want to change when you do that will you self assess your life magic happens things start to go in the direction you want them to go. So do your homework today my perfect week planner you can get it at perfectly planner. Dot Com is a great way to make sure you can do that every single week. So, goal setting is a big part of what I like to do. I'm a big ask Ole Center, I am I just reach out there and say, okay, let's go for something that I really believe I can do if I put my mind to it I'm GonNa go forward, but it's bigger than maybe I am today now you are a goal setting machine you are this whole business is something I do right now is whole lifestyle I have lived now since why started this way back in two thousand three's when I actually started doing this kind of thing. It all started from a big ask Ole it did I just kind of decided as let's do this and let's go out and make it happen and it's been my life ever since site believe in goals like that. I believe you're hardwired. So here's what I believe. I believe that when you get this idea in your head. And you believe in the idea and you get excited about the idea dome you're often running. That's what happens and usually you're not often running because you don't believe in the idea it's not big enough to excite you and so they whatever it's I like what I have today. Why should I go for that? Right? So make sure it's really big. Make. Sure. It's awesome. A big ass school at a Bam. Make it a big Bam goal K.. But let me ask you a question. Have you ever found yourself and I know the answer this because I know you have I'm not smart not in that sense no I've seen it all the time and I had it happened to me all the time too smart are. Have you ever found yourself with goal and you push the pause button. Just Second. Doesn't make sense does it Seriously I decided I really want this. No I want this. I lost sleep over I spent time finding what my big goal was going to be then. At didn't do anything. Or maybe you got excited about it, you get all revved up and you're not moving. Amihai. Revved up and you're excited and moving, but it's not working. Wait a second I don't know which one it is, but but the. In all cases, I'll tell you what I run into. I have the the very, very good fortune of working with lots clients. All Week Long I'm on the phone at one time. I love it I really do I pick up the phone, call him we have a schedule call once a week and I pick up the phone like two or three times how you doing check in on I like to do that. But lots of times say are revved up lots of times they are moving they're trying, but they're not getting the progress they want that's unfamiliar. So I learned over time to ask a couple of questions because that's what I do. I question asks this. Do you know what your goal looks like. And do you really believe you can attain it? If, you can't really clearly see what you want. It's Kinda. Hard to get there. Isn't it? You can understand it can't be really vague, but it's vague drift around. So you need to know what it really looks like, and secondly you need to believe you can get it and it believe that if I work hard enough I've acquired the skillset if I if we put the time in I, can get there. If you don't believe, you can do it. Then you never gonNA go after it. Right. So that's the first thing. Do you believe in the goal and do you know exactly what it looks like? So you can see it when when it's in front of you can grab it. I guess you know depends. Second thing to say, do you have a roadmap for cheating that goal we all need a roadmap your hard wired to have a roadmap. How do you get there? I know we can put a GPS and just turn left when it says turn left right let's not the way it works in life. It really is much more comfortable and as a human were more comfortable in the world, we know what we have to do. So when you look at your goal, you want to go after you believe you can get it and you say this is at least to the best of my ability today were with the knowledge I have today. These are the steps I'm going to take in. This is how I'm GonNa get there if you have a roadmap, you're pretty good shape. Now you got to be flexible. Things are going to change along the way, but you need a place to start to start a middle and an end. So you know, it looks like. You believe you can do it. And you have a roadmap at least to start a place, you can head down that road as Jack Canfield. Said you heading down a dark path you take the first couple of steps in the light start to go on. So maybe you can't see it from here, but you gotta step down that path I. Right? But. Sometimes there's something different in here. Not really doing this longtime ago, and this is basically about being effective in not just busy you've heard before. I'll always ask if these things are already in place I'll say listen the steps you're taking the action steps you're taking every single day. Are they sufficient to reach your goal? He the response I get is usually good question. Also I think. So that's why I asked. It are the steps you're taking sufficient to reach your goal in other words. Are The actions you take actually aligned with the goal and are they going to move forward or the keeping busy?

Addressing Cybersecurity Breaches in a COVID-19 Environment

"Time we were talking in person at the Sava Fusion Center in Sydney and has in the world challenge since we recorded that particular episode and I think it's a really Opportune. Time now, considering accenture has allowed incident response team in various parts of the world but obviously here in the I said Ole side on the tops of attacks the is being used and indeed the motivational the reasons for those attacks I think we might come to you first off the shift in the landscape I've the last few months and particularly since episode one some of the okay from the incident response time. Yes. You'll Chris really really interesting question I'm. I think all follow back to sort of March timeframe when things really starting to get started we saw massive uptake, Immuno covid nineteen themed fishing spear phishing email attacks, which is pretty consistent. With every time we've seen some major political shift or a major incident that gets people's emotions engaged. cybercriminals are pretty quick to the tactics to focus on that to exploit those emotions to get people to. Click on links and install alway but there's absolutely no denying sitting back now in where we end of July and looking back since that time frame it's all about ransomware. It is an absolute epidemic. We are saying certainly strategy. I don't think we've ever seen anything of what we're saying right now but even globally, I, mean there are massive companies just in the last few days Gombe and is all over the price and they've had an unprecedented attack. So I think ransomware is a is a big. Uptick we've seen in terms of changing the threat landscape, but the motivation full that ransomware, and also we've had some federal government, even prime ministerial level announcements in terms of the, but they'd foreign nation state actor motivation, but these ransomware attacks. Ransom crew ransomware crews, running these these campaigns will what what can enterprise be doing? What are you advising your clients in this? And what does what are some of those key controls that enterprise have to stop to get rot? That strike question I think come going back to the whole sort of state basting thread actors in the motivation. What I'm looking at. The question everyone was asking Ileana. These why we sing his uptick you know what's the connection and I've been racking my brain to try to understand what is the connection between the change in circumstances pulse covid nineteen and the increase in ransomware attacks. And what what we've managed to not come off the back of a major incident response way with we're added for sort of full wakes going up against the very threat actor the ICS's sent had only the intelligence reports at-bats June. And what what we sort of fan was during that analysis with different tactics use that I've never seen used before. A lot of the trade crafts very very similar but what we saw will threat actors. The actual attack is doing the attack that to deploy the ransomware with very very unskilled. These were not people who were very sophisticated in terms of their trade craft knowing what they were doing, but they were following a script and they were using automation and so what what I worked at pretty quickly in that sort of analysis was that what we're dealing with the question of why what's the connection but it's how how have threat actors managed to scale operations so quickly and I think it's been a combination of a more automation scripting intend to these attacks in the playbook they using. And possibly more outsourcing in points about the multiple parties they in gold in a ransomware as a service, it's a thing that's used by criminals who break in and gain access to monetize the access that go. So there are different actors during different parts of the service certainly inexperience what's what's been Jimmy leading to this massive uptake is the scale these attackers can now will brian up. So was the to the cut and paste approach, but it wasn't necessarily one act up. More based tools, the automated tools and also some of the services the as you said, the ransomware is a service. Became was it would you? I would the word be unleashed for anyone to use or did you get a sense of was potentially coordination there or was it just? Just. Random tiles in the application of these tools. Now, that's that's a great question. So the ransom web. The to us to make the money to the stuff that actually encrypt dot or an extra traits daughter where you put your, you know your bitcoins into it's an automated platform. There was no human direction. It is literally you get a self service ticket you go up to a you know this this website on the Dogwood you punching you ticket number it tells you how much you need to pay. The whole process is automated, and so that's that's just like A. Sas Platform that the attackers are using to monetize their tax and then the people who do the ransomware extortion they split the proceeds with the attackers had actually broken into the organization and gain the access necessary to deploy the ransomware tools. Now, this first group of people actually breaking, they're the ones where we're seeing a local coordination. So it's not once right active multiple tread actors, but one of the groups that does this figured out how to scale operation that got. Literally play by play. I you run this command then you run that command and they didn't gonNA help this. If you get stuck, there's a website you go to someone can give you help, and so that's that's what I think. The big difference we've seen in the last six months as the scale of people being compromised. Has Gone up substantially.

Homophonix Artist Interviews: Rainbow Riots

"We begin in Stockholm. It is true that Sweden produces an astonishing amount of legendary music small country. Third and world music exports after the US and the UK. No surprise that within the queer communities are Sweden there exists a bevy of talent. Rainbow Reports is a nonprofit organization using arts and coach as tools to advocate for human rights, LGBT Iq, plus people globally. Now. More than ever. Our focuses humane humans should be equality and acceptance for all. It is clear that social justice is not yet where it should be, which is why arts and coach organizations like Rainbow, riots exist if you're lucky enough to live in a country where there oiled ubt brides, a lot of times people get complacent and they think, oh, this is the norm. This is the standard while it ain't Jinnai they're like seventy plus countries in the world grades illegal with same sex relations and where people get killed where where. A death penalty sometimes. Free. Sometimes I think we have freedom, but the struggle still continues. The filed the torture still continues. The fight for freedom still continues. Let's put our hands together for freedom for freedom. Through Rainbow Riots Hitter Lemberg brings to light the ongoing injustices faced by LGBT plus family worldwide. With a background in music production visuals, events publication in community projects combined with an amazingly generous creative spirit. Is Well to use music and media to inform and educate. Rainbow riots invited artists from several countries to take part in a concert as part of the Stockholm pride two, thousand and seventeen. They also made their presence known within the pride parade from the back of a truck proudly blasting out there incredible musical achievements. I asked Peta which countries were represented. On the rainbow riots flow we had a representatives from Sweden what and we had Uganda Kenya. We had Malawi and we had Jamaica. One of the standout tracks from that for me was a song called freedom. See the crowd. Jumping into. Heard? Freedom. To it in such a way can you tell me up freedom came about when I started making freedom which I co? Bro With? Lesbian rapid called you'll be she's A. Legendary rap group in this in the states called. And when we wrote it, it was kind of like part of my old project housing Wallenberg and kind of thought. It was going to be part of that. But then as I started gravitating towards doing something with Queer activism around the world I, started turning my movement Rainbow Rides into a creative project and I thought well, freedom should be part of that. Really. So that's when I went down to Uganda and started working in Uganda 'cause I thought if I'm going to make this album with queer voices from the world's most dangerous places I've gotta go to the belly of the beast which is Uganda. So I thought okay. Well, I've got to go there ain't going to be nice in preschool ad. And before I went like my passport was running out, so yeah, they add to reissue a possible at the Swedish apple before my flight and they gave me a pink. And I thought. How appropriate with driving along well, exactly Scotland I'm going into Uganda practically waving rainbow flags. This is not going to end well because I was not sure what to expect the anything I'd seen and heard was that nobody nobody in Uganda who was queer was safe and everybody was you know hiding whenever you saw an interview with somebody they will always hiding behind a blood pixellated sort of thing and and not just come to know people going to want to be part of this project. Is it going to be really difficult? What am I going to expect? So therefore came prepared with a song that I'd already written which with freedom I thought at the best maybe I can get some people to dogs in the video at least will have something. But when I arrived, I found a thriving queer community with love creativity and that's how the project started. When I arrived in Uganda realized wow I could really make a whole out I could turn this into something much bigger or they're already artists to establish themselves within the community who were making music. N You lots of quiz singers and performers an artist, and I ended up right in the middle of it. So you know I arrived armed with one song and you know it turned into an album of freedom was starting song, and of course, a features my my old correcting partner you'll be of your majesty but also features a Ugandan singer cold deep lack on bicycle and also on the spoken word intro and the thing about freedom was the I always knew that it was really instant kind of be happy pride song and I just wanted to dot context to put it in. Something else. So it's not just the body, song? To. Put it into context of something really really important life and death and I kinda thought what what better way to to get the message out to make people ons. That was to make them listen.

"And it's been such A. It's such an interesting challenge to say the least I there's. You know historians GonNa be writing about this period of our history. I think for a long long time. There's no way to. There's no one word that sort of sums it up, but you know. Something I I know. You talked about in a recent column of yours. was that you know typically when there's when there's sort of. A natural disaster, hurricane or something like that. You know we see a members coming together and <hes>. You know they're going to band together and start flying relief supplies and things like that. There's there's some action that can be taken. Any a ears are always. Right there front and center to do it and we we do know of of some cases like this and the pandemic, but really when the action. that. Everybody has to take is sort of hunkered down at home. It becomes a very strange thing I think for our culture. It really is. It's <hes>. It's not how. It as you say, it's exactly. Against what our culture's all about which is gathering celebrating and Having good Komo, Camaraderie, so it's it's so so against that when we when we finally got into. The decision. We had to make the beginning of May then. It was spending the rest of May. Unraveling all the efforts that we had moving forward to have the event, and starting to look at what the rest of the year was going to look like, so it's been it's beginning down to what I would say, normal work pace, <hes> not the frantic one that we had again. <hes> I've been been. In headquarters it's it's a very different place when we've asked people to continue to work at home. And wear masks and having the proper. Distancing insanity. You just lose that. Excitement feel that we all have. We come to work together because I think one thing about our team is. Everybody enjoys being a part of the mission working for the members in the. "Search. The hunted the sailplane. The explosives exactly good for Tom's life at fellow typical watch list that same playing episode. It's sort of. It's a little bit of speed in reverse and that there's you know I don't want to spoil it for anybody because I'm sure everybody is going to be watching this now. But there's this whole section wear their boss. Spencer is in this Glider Ray so topical bladder flying One fifty towing towing a glider off this tiny little dirt strip which is pretty unusual in and of itself and There's a bomb that Somebody puts into sailplane because he needs revenge for something that happened in the war and the bomb armed when he goes above three thousand feet for the first time. And then it's set to go off When he descends below it So you know lots and lots of tension there and you've got You've got are are are men casts and What's his name? Casson Stanton flying along in there. He doesn't have a radio in the gliders of their yelling at them with a megaphone telling him you know stay above three thousand feet and so okay well. He's only glider so he's only so much choice really has there but the glider exactly right and they do a nice job they have a two seat glider but the the real actors in the front seat and they obscure the rear the rear canopy just a little bit and just kind of have it a little bit darker and kind of in shadow so their shots where you would swear that the real actor was in the glider by himself and possibly really doing the flying. But you had you you know you watch closely watching C. There's another pilot there but but again You know just silly very watchable harmless seventies era plots but boy just one good flying Episode after another so for me. It belongs on the shelf next to ones. I know we had talked about Which would be the Blue Thunder? Tv series Stuff like that. How did you say there's a few areas where you can see like an EA sticker something like that? Oh Yeah so the very first episode of Spencer's pilots We flying We've got bill bixby. I think this was right before the incredible hulk. He's flying that Joe Houston and You know. He sees his steering flying around. And then then we see some the rear projection. Or you know stuff close ups of Bill Bixby as if he were flying which of course he's not but and they've got his name. The character named stenciled under the under the cockpit combing where it would normally say. Joe Hughes what right next to that is big wing. Da Sticker so every. Close up of Bill Bixby in the cockpit. There's an icy a sticker right there. That's awesome yeah and then plus if you you like seeing that airplane and get come see our museum everybody wins. You will speaking of aircraft. We have a few movie stars in our collection But you know when we ought to touch on. Is The flyway home airplane? Oh absolutely so you know F- for those who saw the movie Or maybe didn't If if the vote in other words everybody yeah exactly exactly so everybody so the MUCCI listens to this show by the way exactly so the movie basis around basically a young lady who goes to live with her Stepdad and Kind of gets attached to a family of I think in a movie. It's it's a Canadian. Geese right yeah the imprint honor when they I think what their their mother gets killed. And then they imprint on her when they hatch right. Yeah right for the record. Got a point this out or my friends in Canada. Will Lynch me. They are candidates. Oh that's not. Canadian is not actually Canadian days. So I'm here to help. I learned something today. I think we all do Chris. This'll be the only thing I learned today. So basically You know they have to. She wants to modify teach him how to how to to to migrate and They use an airplane to do it now. Of course this was a real operation. Operation Migration That that actually did this in real life and in the story is is kind of loosely based on the real one of the real events But the aircraft. That's both in the movie and was used in real operation. Migration is one of the aircraft. It was donated to our museum couple of years ago. That is so cool. And if I remember right Operation Migration was focused primarily on the sand hill cranes. That's right yeah. Rains and in it was really weird. Day The where. They had said that they wouldn't imprint on people because nature. You know sometimes people aren't the best thing to have animals imprint on They had to basically never let these cranes see them outside of these goofy costumes. That he's really really crazy Looking spacesuits almost so that it would hide what what human looked like from them. And in effect they've looked like just a a big giant kind of unwieldy crane. I mean they were. They were all white black trim. That kind of thing exactly exactly and And of course one of those disputes is on display in the in the cockpit of the aircraft in the museum but So they they would have to like this whole process of being around these these birds and then eventually Governed fly you know and teach them how to form up on on the airplane which naturally they just kind of know how to do and And then you know the these this amazing adventure of of actually helping the migrate. Now for whatever reason I didn't realize the error to bird pictures I guess would be as pretty as they were. They were absolutely gorgeous photos. that That they shared with us. That that of this going on it. Just fantastic it was just a really neat. Of course a green dot alum. Joe Doff He was one of the pilots out. Right right exactly. Yeah food is. He's one of the guys instrumental donating the plane Yeah so now now we have to get Dan. Yeah that's right exactly. Yeah ask which Which I played for the movie is that is it though. Is Jeff Daniels One? I don't remember if it's his or hers. Hers was actually like a like had like appendage on it that made it actually look like a goose. Remember yeah so maybe it is. I'm not sure but it is one of the ones using the movie. I know I will never forget the first time I saw even still image of Probably Bill Lipman doing some of those. I formation flights with a with a flock of birds. And how you see a still from anything. That's what a lucky shot is that the airplane was passing by these birds. And they got it lined up right and then you realize now. They're therefore made on him and then when you see the air to air stuff they see exactly how the the muscles and the birds are. Moving in. Their heads are position. And all that stuff. I think it's just spectacular If you for anybody who enjoyed you know flyway home or this sort of the nonfiction version. The documentary called come on geese about Bill Schmidt and those early migration tests There's another documentary No airplanes scene in it but airplanes used in filming called winged migration Out of Australia and it's about maybe twenty years ago right after the run of the turn of the century and I'm sorry it's not. It's IT's French. There was an Australian release of some French film but anyway Just about an hour and a half of the utterly utterly just jaw dropping Lee beautiful Primarily air footage of birds All different all different species storks and Pelicans and all kinds of things and they used paragliders and balloons in the filming of it You know it's a very very sedate very Just visually stunning Documentary But but well worth it. I love there is. There is a when Joe came to speak the museum. There is a clip played Of there was they had a.

"Anyone everyone who loves aviation, the green dot sponsored by GE aviation. Welcome back. I'm one of your host. I'm Chris Henry of the EA aviation museum on the programs coordinator here, and we're sitting in a different scenario here today on my left. Tom sharpen tier government relations director. Well, Tom God to have you here with me today, a ties here, of course running the, the controls behind the curtain, and we have two very special guests here with us today, all the way from Hobart field, Florida. We have major clay tonight and we have technical sergeant Alex schedule. I wanna make sure I get your guys names right here so horrific. Yeah, I, I don't want to take you guys off because you guys can make house go away. So. Well, thank you guys want, you guys are crew members on the AC one thirty gunship. We are now. It's really been Neak community to be a part of and really enjoyed every minute of it. Well, so tell us a little bit. How did you guys get into the current field that you're in? Well, I was always interested in aviation started to build model airplanes with my dad my grandpa, and then a vulture CAP on that. I just knew was in the cards for me to go to your force. So started right off in the gunship in always been in the gunship. So loving your so far. How about you clay, I grew up in San Francisco, Bay area, and just going to watch your planes with my dad. There's a lot of good airports ago. Planes bought out there between San Francisco and Oakland and go down to Moffett field and see some military airplanes up at Travis so just seeing planes fly over all the time. Really got me excited for it. And then I learned about civil patrol just before getting into high school and started learning. More about aerospace and some of the history involved with it and just being a aviation geek, ever since. Really? That's awesome McClay. Don't understand it. Right. You're a young eagle. Is that right? I think it a young eagle flight as a young middle schooler out in concord, California. My dad worked with a guy who was in the and Gaza fly in his Cessna one eighty which was a great experience. That's awesome. So how'd you wind up on the specifically on the one thirty? Do people generally start on the C one thirty matriculate into the one thirty or did you just go straight in and was it your first choice? You know, what's neat is in the past before nine eleven. Oftentimes, you had to fly something else before you could come to special operations command. And then manning was so thin after nine eleven with all the deployments. They started to allow guys to come straight again ships so Alex, and I are what you, call your babies which has been great because we could come straight to the community. And when I was for Kevin cadet they took us on a trip to kirtland and before, then I didn't really know what I wanted to fly is pretty open to anything, but we got flan talent to, and then on an age fifty three and, and get to see a little bit of what special operations flying as like and you know, just the teamwork involved with it, the camaraderie, the leadership and starting to talk to one or two, people that were at the academy at the time here, what those missions were like that. This is definitely what I wanna do. And so from day, one a pilot training us at a really hope I can get the gun ships. I don't think I will initially, I'll. Fly something else, and then get the gun ships, but whether it was karma or timing really worked out and got to go to the sixteen th special operations squadron. Oh out spout that the same thing for, you know, Solman listed. So I took a different avenue. I when I enlisted telemarketer don't call me less garner drops. Because I, I wasn't interested in anything else into it, just wanna because he was like, well, you know, that might take a year, I guess we'll hear from any year, so well not quite that long, but a signed a goner only in that likes that the only thing that's going to accept into, you know what you're B, M T, then it got to the flight program into straight into the sixty SOS. So our side of the house, illicit size, lot faster than the officer side, just because we don't have the lengthy pilot training process, and our school house has a bit of a trimmed down if you will. So when you talk about gun or can you talk a little bit about the size of an easy one thirty crew. And, and kind of what everybody does go. Yeah. Well front if you want to start the pilot. Yeah. Absolutely. So what's needed have a large crew compared to some airplanes? You know, there's, there's thirteen of us on there for a normal combat mission at home, though, we can have up to twenty one on board between students instructors, evaluators everyone getting training, and also. Sometimes we'll have our ground forces fly along with us, too. So we might have an army ground force commander fly long just to see his troops on the ground and watch how the missions are going down, but up front, we'll get the aircraft commander in charge a leading the mission and getting things done. He's assisted by our co-pilot, and we haven't flight engineer, as well and flight engineer much like our systems expert. He's the one who's running all of our normal onboard systems, and just keep an eye on the engines and everything that we use to get the mission done from there. We were back in the aircraft we call it our battle management center. And that's where the rest of our tactical crew it. So our sensor operators. We have infrared in a TV sensor operator. And they're basically eyeballs of the gun ship. They're operating are visual sensors and the next to them. You've got the navigator and the fire control officer fire control officers overseeing the whole situation on the ground and recommending weapons and fuze combinations to the pilot for employment and the navigator. I it's often known that navigators really the voice of the gunship, so. When we're talking to the Jake tack on the ground. He's actually talking to the navigator. He's the voice of everything that's going on the plane contents, and all are inputs and then push them out to something that makes sense. And that's usable for the Jay tack right behind him, is the our electric warfare officer and his job is basically defensively aircraft. So he operates all our defensive systems provides me as a pilot with recommendations. Okay. What's threats in the area if we do get shot at what's our plan of action? What are we going to do from there? And then I'll pass it. Alex talk about the gunners and scanners and load. Yes. So there's five of us in the back. There used to be a split. There was a you had four gunners one loadmaster, but they changed that now we're all call special missions aviators. So we have the same job. Others. Conception out there, people think that you'll get qualified on one weapon, or actually qualified on all of them. So we're completely interchangeable. So with five of us, you're gonna have rice scanner, and then a load traditional loadmaster position filled by guy in the back looking at the bubble all night, and they're going to primarily work with pilots and the EU. Whoa talk about threats and just. Overall cut of the situation, whereas outside of the ground party, and then all your other guys in the back and listen to the radios and waiting for that piece of culture spiel coming down where you start hearing, the, the key words that far missions coming, then a we're waiting in the back to, you know, see which weapon they're gonna pick us. They want the immigration piece and then really from there. It's just a once we get our against like lights, basically, on the weapons up, and then just a fee nation fixing the guns when needed and it could be real short not broken for alumni, depend on how that goes. So Alex is what we call a league governor as well. So the whole gun deck, we have a league gun, and he's my Representative on the back to let me know what's going on. If there was a malfunction, what do we do in a fix it? What's the time like I moved to another gun? And really, he's the leader of everybody behind me in the airplane. So big responsibility. So one of the questions Tom and I were had we're sort of talking to other day was. Typically are you guys sorta orbiting already or is it a situation where you get scrambled from the from a base? So when you're when you're finding combat. How's that? How does that work? Also. I think it's changed. You know, it was on call basically, but we can do either. So either, you know, the long wintertime kind of in that picture of what's what's happened over the course the night, or like you said, you will not be over one mission, and here, you know, some some mission somewhere else is going south or you know, or a bad mission is coming down. So we'll part over there. Take care of it come back sometimes. So I say very dynamic. Absolutely. Yeah. We may go out wake up in the morning, and you think we're going to this mission, set it may change five times between what we actually end up on that night. You know, God forbid, he'll helicopter get shot down, get retest over to that or anything else time sensitive targets things that pop up that we need to go do to or go, even just get is on something that people wanna see what's going on, on the ground that has to be a pretty good. I, I mean, a good yet tense feeling knowing that you guys are close air support. You're, you're helping people on the ground that are probably in a bad way or can be in a bad way. D-. You know when we, we had a Tomcat pie. Here Megan who mentioned that, you know, it was all fun and games until that I call came out where she was going to go and be close air, support with the time cat. And then that certainly changed the tone of her mission. Do you guys feel that too? I mean when you get a call that you, you know that the, you know, someone's in trouble and need some help, absolutely really closer of support as our bread and butter mission set, and we like to pride ourselves in that day, we can take a call sign of frequency in a location. You give us those three things, and we can come and help you wherever you're at doesn't matter. If you're a JT qualified, or just a conventional troop, it's on the ground getting shot at we wanna come and help you the best. We can. And like you said, sometimes it isn't alert launch we're ruins run into get out and get in the air as quick as we can times. It'll just pop up while we're overhead an operation that may be a quiet night. Nothing's happened for hours, and all of a sudden, you've got a bunch of bad guys run out of a building with PG just surprises everybody. So you can feel the mood change. Everyone sits up in their seats and we're just ready to get to work split the basic question. He keeps saying night, d do you? Primarily operate it at at night to fly. A lot of daytime missions, and all we do primarily operate at night, and that has changed over the years to engage history. So there was a lot of tough lessons learned. You know, we lost gunship during the Gulf war, spiritual three because it stayed out into the daytime to continue prosecuting targets, and it was shot down. So for over the years, it really depends what environment were in if we would fly day mission or not any. No, we always a balance of risk to the airplane versus a risk to the ground floor. So if the, the risk is higher the ground force, and we can stay longer, and we need to we absolutely will. But then we have to valuate what's, what's the surface air threat look like to us as well. It does no good for us to have fourteen more guys on the ground just because we're out of the fight now too. So really, that's a leadership and a crew discussion about what we can accept risk wise. Alex, I got to ask you something as a gun, ship nerd here, full out. Anybody listening knows that I am. Man. What's like the fire that one? Oh, five off the back of that airplane, that has to be pretty cool was there's nothing like it. I mean you're talking, you know, one hundred five millimeters. Do you ever seen the videos that the recalls forty nine inches and just the power and force behind it? No, you know, buckle your knees. It's hard. 'cause you that's it's normal now but it's always the first round of the day, you're just like you know, unless something amazing out of I don't think anything to prepare for it. It's something you feel all the way up front to. I mean obviously Alex is right in the heart of it back there. But we can feel kick even lower flying around up to. And if you've ever been on the ground are safety, distances, a couple of hundred meters really. But even at that distance when you feel.
