And you're listening to good kids. I am a comedian and a writer. And a mom. And i'm gonna talk about what happened the first year of my daughter's life. I guess i was probably about. I don't know maybe eighteen weeks pregnant or so. And the very first thing that i remember happening it was out of the ordinary is that i was at the office. And you know you have to go all the time when you're pregnant and every time you go they have you pee in a cup because if protein in your p when you're pregnant that's like really bad for whatever reason so and i think it's because they're making sure you don't have pre eclampsia and maybe there's other stuff but you're just peeing in so many cups so i remember. The doctor came into the room and said That wasn't something about like it wasn't clean p. And that she thought i needed to wipe again and go back. And p again which was kind of wild to hear this adult woman saying to another adult woman like. I don't think you wiped your i know. But that's that was what she was saying and I had wiped my regina well enough. Thank you But she had me you know sort of double and triple checking this This urine that. She kept finding protein in basically and ultimately throughout the whole pregnancy. She wasn't really that concerned about it but she would constantly mention it so that was the first thing that was out of the ordinary. But i didn't really Worry too much about it. And it wasn't until it was probably twenty six weeks into the pregnancy. That i was at you know they have you. Go to these appointments where they're measuring the baby by this point all these really high-tech ultrasounds and they can do all this crazy stuff with it so it was a different. Ob than the one who thought i had dirty p It was an ob who Noticed this protein was very concerned about it and they had also started measuring the baby and suddenly out of nowhere. She was measuring small. So my heart just absurd. Lutely dropped The day that they were telling me she was measuring small. Her belly was two weeks behind Everything else seemed okay. But she wasn't getting enough food in there and it just regular pregnancy turns overnight into this like really scary situation. So she said we don't know exactly what's going on. We're to diagnose this as pre eclampsia which basically means that you have protein in your urine and that your blood pressure is higher than they want it to be The idea with pre eclampsia has that can turn it a moment's notice. Your blood pressure can shoot through the roof. It can cause seizures and all this other stuff and ultimately could cause death for you or the baby. So they're really watchful about it and come to the hospital if anything changes and it could really turn on a dime so i was on bed rest for the last. Three months of pregnancy asked to come in twice a week so that they could put a heart rate monitor on the baby and keep an eye on everything and the high-risk obese said i'm really concerned about this and i want you to follow up after the baby is born and that was really confusing to me because after the baby is born the pre eclampsia supposed to away magically. But she said. I think maybe three months after the baby's born eight weeks after the baby's born you need to go see a kidney doctor and these are all like big ideas. I'm like what even are the kidneys. I'm i'm i have no idea what she's wanting to have happened. I'm writing like kidney. Follow up on my mom. I'm leaving leaving the hospital. But she was concerned about it and mentioned in every time and watch me like a hawk and they induced my baby At thirty seven weeks because of this quote unquote pre eclampsia. Everything about the labor and delivery was fine. Wonderful such an amazing life experience of loved to do it a million times over and i'm sure other people have delivered. Babies are probably like what. What are you talking about. But i really did feel god. I don't know. I loved giving birth to her. I loved the experience. It was horrible and awful and wonderful'' so there wasn't any negativity around the baby or my body during this lebron delivery process There was no concern about the protein. Everything was fine. She did take some urine and they tested that and those levels were all the same so this kind of information. I'm getting i'm you know feeding the new baby and all that kind of stuff but it just in the back of my mind like okay. Hopefully fingers crossed my body. Went wild and it's all just gonna.

"Cannot contain him and he starts getting into trouble if we don't so you know getting millions to get him outside at least an hour a day to just runoff runoff that extra energy and it's fun for everybody and breaks up the day and we did not want to stop that when it gets cold and especially this winter when a lot of the things that we would have turned to for that kind of energy outlet like you know the gymnastics place or the library or the indoor pool like those are not going to be options for us this winter so we thought many other families would probably be in that position be maybe concerned about cabin fever overtaking them and i really wanted to encourage everybody no matter where you live whether you're in a mountain town or you live in the middle of a city that you absolutely can have a lot of fun in the winter with just a little extra prep and you can still get your kids out and i hope you do keeping your kid. Warm is probably a number one concern for parents who want to get out in the winter and it should be because if your kid is cold like your outing is going to end very quickly so i think the biggest thing to think about. Is you want waterproof stuff. If there's any snow involved whatsoever so snow pants and jackets are at least water resistant. And that's usually good enough but something like gloves and boots or mittens. You want to be waterproof. Sometimes you see those kids gloves. That are just kind of like light cotton type or acrylic mitten and anything like that. If the kids playing in the snow for any period of time going to soak through and then they'll be freezing and the same with beach like you want to have a good waterproof boot on their Cold feet are the quickest way to kill an outing. I think snacks are an essential part of at least raising my children like there's such a good motivating factor and mood lifter. And i just feel like strategically. Deploying food is such an important part of raising my kids. But i mean outdoors. You definitely want to have a good supply of snacks in in one sense. It's a good of bribe. Really a lot of parents will bring around. We'll bring treats along with them like gummy bears or something like that And that can help your kid decide. They actually do wanna go for a hike if you say. Hey you get to that tree over there. You can have me and they can really surprisingly get them moving when they they might be a little reluctant diverse And then you also need to keep their energy up and this goes double in the winter really because you're burning extra calories plowing through snow and just keeping your body warm so we like to take things that are not gonna freeze so certain kinds of energy bars sometimes. Turn into like solid bricks if they're outside for a few hours so you want to avoid that kind of thing Other you know things like dried fruit or good or shoot. Some treats are good. Maybe some chocolate chips or cookie. Cookies are a really good one. I find they don't freeze and kids always excited to have a cookie and that all keep their energy up and keep them happy. And you wanna think about hydration. I think a lot of people don't realize how much moisture you're really exhaling and kind of letting out when you're outside in the cold and you don't necessarily feel like you need to drink as much as you would maybe in a hot summer day but that's another key thing a thermos of herbal tea or hot chocolate is such a good way to both. Get your liquid in and motivate the kid to get the liquid and and also just make it a special treat for them. He's also the president of the board of coal river mountain watch who just celebrated a big victory in a long fought battle over mountaintop mining apple at and that's that's why I'm you know, I reached out to you Bob because I saw your tweet the other day where? You said the AK act was finally introduced in congress. So first of all I jumped for joy because I know how important this is. And how long you've been working on it. So let's start by telling everyone what the AK act is. Well, okay, quickly as I possibly. Yep. So the Appalachian communities healthy emergency act is a Bill that that we crafted back it's hard to believe but nine years ago. This is this is the fourth congress that it has been introduced in the coal. But it is the first time we've had it introduced in a house that wasn't openly hostile. Okay. So this is this is a big big big deal. And what it does for those who don't know. There's a there's a really sleazy filthy, dirty, nasty, vile. Hateful coal extraction process. It's practiced only in four states. West Virginia eastern, Kentucky, southwest Virginia, northeast, Tennessee and the shorthand term for it is mountaintop removal because that's what they do. They nude all of these mountains, the oldest mountains on earth, and they wiped out more than five. Of more than the more than the total size of the state of Delaware, and they drill, and they pack them with explosives, and they blow up the sandstone over top to get it seems a coal that can be as thin as six inches and in the process of that just to give you just to give you an idea. One single blast can have the explosive force of twenty five Tomahawk cruise missiles landing at the same time in the same place. And it generates vast amounts of toxic super super ultra micro fine. Particulate matter that people then breathe even though they don't know. They're breathing. It in ten years later, they're sitting on an examining table in a doctor's office. The doctor says, hey, you got cancer. You got four months to live. And among other things statistical evidence that's been gathered just by way of giving folks a way to put this in perspective. You remember how shocked and disgusted? We were when we found out that as a result of the Trump regimes. Overt neglect of Puerto Rico after after Maria, of course. The place around by ocean big ocean that the Donald Trump has done such a great job helping and given so much. We helped him anymore it by those big one. Peak one. Yeah. Sorry. So we've found out there were two thousand nine hundred seventy five more deaths that occurred as a result of Maria than anybody had counted. Yep. Well, over the course of the years, those same statistical modeling methods have been used in Appalachia well in particular in West Virginia in the counties where mountaintop removal was done. And what we know is that even after you factor in all the bad things hillbillies too. You know, we smoke. We drank. We eat gravy with our gravy with melted cheese on top and a biscuit underneath and it's bad things after you factor. All of that away. We got nine we got more than nine hundred people who die every year in these counties. Because of mountaintop removal. It's crazy. So over the course of the two and a half decades or so that this stuff been running wild. We're talking about probably nearly twenty five thousand people dead. And and a government state governments federal government that has done absolutely nothing about it. But finally, finally, we feel like the day of jubilee may be here, Nicole because not only has the Bill been reintroduced with with co-sponsors twelve fine cosponsors including but not limited to rogue Rehovot of Arizona who chairs Etro resources. That's a big deal..

Next to them via and a government that so desperate for cash that it's recently announced taxes on boreholes internet calls, and even whether reports after process beginning to the century Sammy's been on spending Speiss twenty seven when the country's current government run by the Patriotic Front was elected, it's now on the brink of a debt crisis to discuss the current state of affairs. I'm joined on the phone by John McDermott decolonised Africa correspondent. Hello, John. Hi, Simon, I used the the dread word crisis. Is that really how much trouble is Samuel actually in so zombie, it's not a country. You hear about a lot. It's in the middle of the pack in many ways, sort of geographically, landlocked country, south of DO see it's about in the middle of the pack in terms of population compared with African countries. And historically, it's being not. Not particularly corrupt, and it's been neither the richest nor the poorest of African countries. So it's often being ignored by the world's media. However, this year it has a claim to fame which is that if you take all of the Sovan bonds of all of the emerging market countries Zambia as a whole has performed the worst, which given crises in Turkey and Argentina, and others is quite some achievement. How's it managed that clearly it's borrowed too much money. But what for a great question and it's one or log. Zombies are asking too. I think that there's been two sources for the splurge or two targets for the splurge. One has been a big increase in civil service salaries. The wage Bill has doubled in the past few years, and the second most significant is infrastructure. It has built nine thousand kilometers worth of roads a giant. New airport that looks like a hamburger and a whole bunch of other buildings, which if you look at the figures seem not to produce the greatest amount of value for the tax payer that hints perhaps corruption knit. You said Zambia was not notably corrupt historically dust been the case. But if you speak to members of Zambian civil society, they say that since the election of the Patriotic Front in two thousand eleven, the has been a market increase, and that is corroborated with reports by institutions ambi- like the auditor general, it's hard to find precise numbers, but what you find what you hear is that as this infrastructure splurge has occurred, a lot of people close to the center of power have been skimming significant sums of the top. What's to be done, I suppose, in emerging market debt crisis normally. Three ways. It can resolve itself with a default with resort to the IMF or with renegotiation with its creditors is Zambia on on the brink of any of those. This is where it gets interesting. So humid. Zombie was one of dozens of African countries which received debt relief in dozen, five dozen six after the big global drop the debt campaign and for a while things to be looking. Okay, not just Zambia but across the continent on that front. Now, though you're seeing this eighteen countries of the IMF says, is that risk of debt distress and another eight, which actually are meaning that the either defaulted on loans or delinquent and Zambia essentially has a couple of options one. It can get his own house in order and it can stop it's overspending with or without the help of the International Monetary Fund. The second option, which is the one it seems to be taking. Thing is to essentially ignore the IMF and instead turned to China, which has somewhere between a fifth and a third of external debt. And like in a lot of other African countries, this is a relatively new development. Whereas in the past they would have essentially had to deal with and follow its strictures. Now they have other options which often means China, but sadly for Zamin some self. The terms of those deals in which you turn to. China can often be quite onerous to say the least thanks very much Simon, Joe McDermott African. You're listening to the week ahead from the economist.
