"So you're working it and you have to deal with people all the time and But it's the introvert is the person who can function as an extrovert but who really benefits from an loves introverted. Time and So so i'll say that the other thing is that i have a lot of entertainment friends who have social anxiety disorder and some of it came from a friend of mine was on a show in a foreign country and she messed up on a tv show and she got off and she was expecting you know in the united states. You have this team in a like. It wasn't so bad. Oh i couldn't even tell. Oh who cares. Oh it happens to everybody oh will will fix it in post op. Hit she She was in a country that didn't operate that way and the whole team met her and humiliated her and said that wasn't okay. You know you did something wrong. Everyone who makes mistakes and it but they said you did something wrong in. It's not okay and my friend has social anxiety. She can't do anything without a teleprompter now. she can't go into certain situations. There's certain ways that you can't photograph her you know. So a lot of Performers have social anxiety disorder. And they just have to really figure out how to control their environment so they don't feel completely debilitated by by the externals good. It is there a disconnect. Between i don't feel worthy and i feel like i had something to say or something to tell people and i feel like i should be out. There are these are these. Are these hard things to reconcile. I'm pretty social. I mean i think i remember you know. There's a story about me being on a bus when i was five years old and and You know that the bus driver. The i came home. I said the bus drivers name is lou. And and i said an and i was afraid of him. 'cause i was the only one on the bus..

"I don't know it's more like it's more like an amoeba like for me. It's more like. I'm like my little spaceship going forward. Hit turbulence and have to get the warp speed up to speed and you know like. I'm trying to guide the ship. But i hit turbulence be here now is kind of more like an amoeba to me and we'll probably both to hear from people are like she totally got it wrong. I like the phrase brazil depression that you used earlier. I don't know that. I've heard it described exactly like that but that that it makes sense to me in the sense that this having dealt with depression means that you kind of have to be not resigned but resolved to the fact that Who is it. It was samuel johnson or ben johnson to called the black dog of depression that to certain extent. It's always gonna be around the corner. Yeah you now. I know that probably he was probably going from samuel johnson or something winston churchill called it his little black dog so it was an and he was talking to a relativity. Like oh us churchill's you know we've got this thing in our blaine. A he really recognize it as a sort of a physical thing and and a a brain chemical thing and he said oh. You have to deal with your little black dog you know. We've got the little black dog and And i think that's extremely helpful to sort of say. I have this. There's two there two or three paths coming out of this. Like comed- happened. When i was twenty mean i was on a big lead up to it hitting full force when i was twenty one and I had some fundamental misunderstandings about what life is. And i encourage people who feel this thing that i called. Who lack the drive to be alive. That's what i call it. It lack which is also called suicidal. Aviation i realized if you lack drive to be alive and you just kind of think that being alive is some somewhat absurd and not worth it and easily knocked down. There's something wrong with you. And so it's important to figure out if you have a fundamental misunderstanding. 'cause but you're probably going to discover as a pocket of extreme anger rage loathing injustice. You know that that is important to to barf out and so i- barf out a bunch not literally. That was an those are other people's problems those are other struggles. Yeah that's not not mine. But certainly friends but i i got out all of this rage and anger and worked on it and People who had a lot of power. I suddenly saw them as human and was able to deescalate that and find my own power and find my own you know like i did a senior thesis play. That was horrendous. But i was like. Oh this is horrendous. But i'm learning. Because i'm a human. That's what happens. Like i don't i don't have to die because i did this embarrassing thing..

"That's another way it wasn't but yes the third thing is when you have to got back to Buddhism and and was hilarious that we were racing around trying to find a name from my album and one lyrics is. I'll meet you here. And i said i was thinking about. I'll meet you here and the record company said that's the one that we want and it's funny because that was what the year taught me instead of saying something bad happened. What did i do wrong. This is proof that i'm a failure. This is proof that i should've read more books. Written more songs been smart. Reid is a better stronger faster sooner. You know instead of meeting reality like that just saying happiness doesn't mean happy happiness. Just you're someone gave you this opportunity to be alive. And sometimes that's a flat tire and and yes. I should have learned how to fix a flat tire. But this is the reality. I'll just meet here instead of taking a so personally. So i think it helps of my residual depression because you know like a lot of technology has gone wrong at the beginning of this interview. Right right as opposed to like what's wrong with me is like oh this is what's happening right now and i've i'm starting to really kinda get farther down into that so i. I wish for everybody that they can. They can take this as a jump off point to something better and not a complete panic. They had to just look in the mirror and they couldn't look anywhere else. So you mentioned buddhism. What is the relationship between omits you here and.

"Like saying it took a train is the most fuel-efficient lease subsidized transportation in our country. And we need to give it our love and our attention amtrak. You know who is a person of course wrote back to me throughout my whole postal. Thanks dr. joanne druk. Yeah joe and then. I and i took a an amtrak down to a tour did in the south and i think that actually saved my life because it was the beginning of coveted when people are like man. This is really serious. But if i'd gone to laguardia and then to the atlanta international airport i would have gotten covert. It was like the very beginning of march so taking a train saved my life. I've said taking the train a really interesting way to be in the country and see the country and understand its history and speculate about its future. And let's do that. I have friends who fin very a panicked about the environment. And they do in their guilt. And that doesn't work for anybody so so no. I travel around. But i actually tried to do. As little fl-. I have a national tour coming up and we've gotten it down to one and a half flights like one round trip and a hat in one way and everything else. I'm driving so you were on a cruise ship that close to the beginning of the pandemic on the cruise ship. There was a news story about the cruise ship that had been grounded and not able and i was like this is like a problem and the way that we dealt with it and breathe through it as we were heading home to the home port where we were gonna get off is to say well that's california and that's closer to the pacific rim as closer to asia. It's more a west coast problem right now. It hadn't reached new york but we all knew it was all about to hit the fan last helicopter out of saigon. I mean it was. We were Last cruise ship to dock before they said enough and we knew it aside from that very scary experience of watching that unfold in real time. How z. hausa krisha experience for you. There are certain stigmas attached to going to going on a cruise ship. It was a good experience for you. You know here's the thing. It's you feel like if you pull the certain curtain back here and there you would see an industry. That's not very well. Regulated in terms of the labor force..

"You know. He's very sad. Thank you have all of this talent going to one place and all of that life in all of that sparkle being in this little place and not being in the smaller places. I've been noticing that the smaller places have been getting their groove for a long time. You're right that the pandemic got people to up their game and they realized their game was there. I grew up in the bay area. And i always dreamed of moving to not to place near new york specifically for for working for other reasons and i think that there is. That's natural right. That's that's sort of a natural inclination for teenagers to want to get out of town to upper themselves in a move to a new place. And obviously you are. Somebody who by nature of your job travels around a lot that how much of the impulse sort of of a building up these places in attempt to kind of get people to stay put all right you totally. You've totally out of me as you know. There's a part of me that sees if people can be more interested in where they are mb nba more cool and and resilient and sophisticated about where they are and they get rests You know they they finish is going there. Wherever there is less there are few things that can happen. One fossil fuel will footprint. You're not needing to fly off to this place with a turquoise water in this place with the with the giant waterfall you suddenly discover that you have your own waterfall in your backyard. So like a great example is in phoenixville pennsylvania where the blob was partially filmed there in the fifties the Be original horrendous acting. I must say i mean but glove. The blog was great. The blob Lib-lab really showed up and steve mcqueen was ordered but there's like the scene where he goes into theater and he says hey guys you got a new something and and he's his acting is good but all of his friends are reading of cards in there. Saying man stop. We're trying to watch a movie and he said you don't understand there's this blob and it's coming out there like really man. We want to watch the movie. And the blob starts to come through the vents ventilation system so they figured out in phoenixville which was a town that was post steal a rust belt town. Well i would say despairing would be a better. In a like shadow economy drugs sex trade you know not not legal economy day discovered that since the blob had been partially filmed in their town and in the theater that they were they had revived. And you know bought for a dollar and replaying muse movies and they could have a blog fest where they would show the blob in the theater. The blob is in and turn it into a whole thing. Called the blob fest now. It's like this big science fiction weekend. I was there for a godzilla weekend. so they bring in like these sifi writers and stuff and everybody wants to live in phoenixville. Now you know and at d. clogs all of that concentrated Population in one place and now people wanna live and in and if you live in philadelphia you wanna make a day trip. You don't have to go to paris because you know why would you go to paris. You've got blob fest. Coming up in the summer and at the end of the year you have the the burning. The firebird festival where they burn a phoenix. Because it's phoenixville which is also very meaningful and very interesting. So there's a part of me says decentralized the fascination of where we are also take that as an example that no-one can be everywhere all at once. Democracy looks like this. you do this thing. They do this thing. We all have mosaic tiles..

"Whatever was happening. that was good. In some of these decentralize towns and smaller cities was accelerated by the pandemic in so far as conversations. That had already started to happen between people. Were you know. Were able to move forward in terms of saying okay here are limitations but here are skill sets. Because we've all had beer together in scones together and and you know created zombie apocalypse film festivals. Together you know we know who knows you know. We know how to put a a sound system together outside be know how to put up a tent. We know how to create You know humorous things. We know how to Regulate change the town's zonings so that we can bump out the sidewalk into the main street which is really hard in a place where you don't have that kind of civic conversation. I mean that's like tons of red tape but you know there are places that said we already found each other by working on garlic festivals and science programming together so we know how to go to the mayor and say dude or do debt. You must let us put this barrier in the middle of the things so that people can sit in. What was formerly main street and eat all the It was almost like the pandemic were awarded those who had already ventured out of their doors and found ways to get past their social ugliness to figure out how to do things together and i was flinched at the words like Why can't we all just get along and work together and stuff. You can't just do that out of nowhere it has to that's an it's an accumulation but for those who had accumulated conversations where they said like I don't like that person. But i trust that person like i a like that person but that person knows how to run a sound system. You know those. Those places were rewarded n..

"I understand that they did benefit from an economy built on the enslavement of other human beings. If they were cotton h. Sugar or consumed other goods that they bought on the open market. They benefited from slavery. I comprehend that it is possible for one person to many things eleven parent a good spouse a loyal neighbor and a racist who tortures the minds bodies and souls of other humans because here she can under the law. Life is lived in the grey zone of weakness and convenience and personal comfort. This is the source of cognitive dissonance. These men and their wives were. That did that lived that. We're not free until we are all free. So i've made a life choice to leave the flag-waving brand of americanism to others this weekend. I'll appreciate that. I don't have to pronounce aluminum as aluminium and that. I have a lot of work to do on. True liberation that starts with educating myself continues with taking action and then the process repeats. I thank my ancestors for their work and see their imperfections. It doesn't hurt anyone to be honest about these things unless we are so fragile that the truth will blow us apart. I don't know about you. But i'm stronger in that time for me to improve this great american experiment with that. I wish you all celebrate a happy fourth of july. Do your research. Don't be a jeffrey teach and learn truth and remember. Expect surprises sir..

"I i'd like to thank james michael riley for joining my patriot at the roots level. You know i appreciate you jim. It's july fourth independence day in the united states and as such my thoughts have turned to my family ties to the revolutionary war. Yes and ber is my first cousin. Seven times removed his grandfather daniel. Burr is my seventh great grandfather. But that's not the kind of contemplation. I mean i'm thinking about the realities of this country both now and then and how slavery is a part of the story of my own participating ancestors lives. I'm a member of the d. a. r. or daughters of the american revolution. It's a hereditary. Society in the united states and abroad and the only way to gain entry is by proving direct lineal descent from someone who fought for the colonial army in a colonial militia or who provided supplies or services to the colonial cause in the past it has been a racially exclusive organization that is changing but his reputation in my experience as an inappropriately. Political society is well earned. It all depends on where you join and with whom you choose to associate like any other organization. I have twenty nine qualifying or possibly qualifying patriots. Men no women yet who either supplied supported or fought with the revolutionary armies to win independence from king george and all of the offenses of the monarchy. And yes you k- friends. I do find the british offensive. I hope you'll love me any less. I certainly don't love you. any less. The variety of types of service that are now considered patriotic are really interesting. These are my patriots names. And what i know about how. They rendered patriotic service. William jesse burton of was a soldier who also furnished supplies to the militia. John h pace of virginia furnished supplies to the militia. Atoms stoltz of the netherlands immigrated to virginia and in seventeen seventy seven. He took the oath of allegiance and furnished supplies to the revolutionary army. George p pan of virginia served in the militia as a juror and supplied the colonial military. William henry blocker of north carolina has an incomplete service record per the dr. So i'm going to need to investigate him. Further isaac bowers of massachusetts was offense. Viewer in the civil service that means. He was appointed to local government to deal with problems between neighbors involving property boundaries and roaming livestock. William connett of new jersey was a soldier in the militia. Richard channel with of virginia served as a soldier after the war he contracted with the commonwealth of virginia to build the fort that became louisville kentucky. Private joseph collins of virginia served in the infantry private elisha bartley of pennsylvania served in the militia. Joseph rutherford walker of county down ireland or perhaps county antrim is just a maybe right now. There are a few possible matches per the. Da are major. John hayes virginia requires more proof for the dr. So he's another challenge for me to take up private auburn hendrickson. Scutt of new york served in the militia. A recently found evidence of his service and no one else's proven it so he will be completely new to the dar's records nathaniel hall of connecticut. Signed the association test in seventeen seventy five. The association was a boycott created by the continental congress in seventeen seventy four. So his signature meant that he agreed. With the boycott against the crown and its products nathaniel. Son ezekiel of connecticut was a soldier in the new york. "Would you give to young women of color who want to get into the world of academia as academics and researchers. Okay my advice would be To make sure you have a community of women of color around you be that fellow students or more critical voices within academia who you can feel that you can approach I would also say That don't be confined to your reading list or your training program Feel that you can explore and go beyond that and bring your own lived experience to your work That is That is knowledge and that is a very important pot of of of what academia and intellectual Work should include. So those are the things that i would. I would definitely suggest and also i would say that if you don't have a space so you don't have a community make it you know you don't need to ask permission to stop or reading rupe. You don't need to ask permission to collectivize or campaign around certain issues. You can do it. And i think kits it some really internalizing that that message to yourself into others around you which will help to i think He'll some of the the her and the the difficulties that that you experience. And also yeah. I mean mental health self cat osa important parts of of the arvid say central parts Of of being in this world as a woman of color. And it's very easy to not look after yourself. It's very easy to not take that break that you needed to To not a share your your your experiences with others and keep them to yourself and internalize those so i think building spaces and building those communities of is radiant potent to supervise. How Doris Burke Became An Accidental Pioneer

"We'll. So Dana I can you tell us a little bit about your own relationship with Doris Burke Yeah? I'm Lucky Kavita I. Mean I worked at ESPN for eight years. So Doris was one of the people that I interacted with frequently. I mean we had so much in common with our love for college basketball and we would just chat at games or she shoot me a text. Love that story that you did today you are. You're just you know you did a great job you knocked it out of the park or I would text her. So we've gone back for years and She's just always been the same. That's the coolest thing I can say about Dr is I don't care if she's super popular people are making t-shirts. Drake and all this, and she's still the same that she was when I first met her how would you describe her on air personality and her style in the booth I think what people like about Dr She's She's she's very intelligent and on point about all of her observations, he's got US billy. Donovan says excellent lower body strength and he doesn't reach over. Don't give the official even a window cut the angle. She is not loud. She's not there's no stick to her tough shot contest. Yes. Yes she says something and she really hones in her. She really calls somebody out everyone's Kinda like both. To Me is where Andrew Wiggins has stood in the corners on several possessions. Like steals reporter to. And if you talk to people in the game, they actually say that they they are very respectful of her opinion and they know if she has a problem with something, then there's a problem. We'll Dana you recently wrote a profile on doors for the athletic I. can you tell us a little bit about her background and her early days? She's like a lot of us or at least like me you know kids that grew up just interested in sports. Super. Star Sable. Start Tonight number eleven she moved from Long Island to the Jersey shore to a small town happened to be a park across the street and a basketball hoop and it was like divine intervention right? She hadn't really played a lot of basketball growing up in Long Island. But when she moved, she was young enough that she just that's where she went and there was never a sense of Oh Doris girls don't play sports. It was just whatever you're busy go outside and play sable from outside. and. So she just became a really good ballplayer where really good basketball players are often developed, which is on the playgrounds took all comers boys girls didn't care. The BUZZER GUARD SABLE Head. And grew into a good enough. Basketball players to get a scholarship to providence. We forget that that was a really big deal for young women. Athletes are just weren't a lot of them. That wasn't normal and she recognize it immediately as what it was. It was a ticket for her to get to college and pay for college and established herself in a career. She wasn't there was no WNBA obviously, she knew that this was the path for her future in her life and she just kinda followed it along. Well, she definitely likes to make fun of herself when talking about in her plane, I had it all going on bad hair bad teeth bad clothes, and the only thing I care about whether my jump shot would ever Mack my triple driveability. She does she downplays herself. She doesn't think she wasn't. You know whatever she wasn't the greatest player. You know she was more of a thoughtful player than a an athletic player that sort of thing. Yeah. I mean she's very self deprecating even about her broadcasting career, which is just hilarious. But again, that's what makes Dr. Stars is that she doesn't take herself too seriously. How did she get her start in broadcasting accidentally which I think I can relate that myself but in her circumstance she was coach she went back to providence to be a coach but then she got married and she got to look around. You know this was back when there weren't a lot of. MOMS that were coaches, you know a lot of coaches, maybe one or the other they couldn't do both and she really thought I want to start a family. So she stepped away from coaching and by Dumb luck at the same time Providence decided you know what? We could put a couple of women's basketball games on the radio and we need somebody to do the radio for us and Ella Dar's. You're sitting there. Why don't you do this and she did and she jokes pie five people are listening you probably honestly not wrong. Let's be honest providence women's basketball and some regional network probably not like drawing huge numbers but she loved it and it was easy and it was comfortable and that just sort of Begat one opportunity after another and an big break came because one of the men's basketball. Analyst for the Big East Games couldn't make it into a providence men's game and they were desperate and that she tells us hilarious story was at the emergency room with her son. He had fallen off the weight bunch cut his head open blood everywhere. She's GONNA to bloody shirt and they told her to come down and do play by play and she said, well, I can't play by play but I'll do the color and boom she's on TV and there she. Is I mean no intent to climb some corporate ladder it just sort of opportunity presented itself and she took it.

"I love him, but I've removed him from the club. So I've replaced him with CBS this morning's Tony to copal. But anyway, so Tony is actually in Lake Charles right now, reporting for Gail on CBS this morning and To give you guys an idea. I spoke to my mom yesterday, and she surveyed the damage when the sun rose. It's pretty bad in her neighborhood, one of the houses near her She said. Looks like it's teeter tottering on the foundation it literally the winds were so strong. It basically pushed the house it moved the house. Now my mother and her neighbor are the luckiest. My mother truly had Angels looking out over her because my mother's house is up against a giant wooded area. And I think that protected think it protected the house from some wind shear. Now, obviously there was still major damage, but she still has a roof. Now Her doors are all messed up and and again without electricity. My mom said it was clocking in at about 88 degrees in her house yesterday in her house, and they're estimating it could be a week or two before she gets electricity back, So we're now dealing with that. So it's awful when she get out of there. Well, you know what I mean? Here's okay, So there's a It's a two pronged problem communication with her. This spotty because she doesn't have power. So her phone, you know, we have two car You tries to go to the car, but for some reason that's not working so And the signal keeps going out. There's the cell towers are destroyed so I can barely get a hold of her text or otherwise, I got ahold of her neighbor. Her neighbor. Like I said, My mother was the only one in the neighborhood that stayed. She was unable to evacuate her neighbor 12 called me. Ah, And when Wanda was speaking to me, my mother was talking with the sheriff Kenny. She did a girl sheet She got sheriff. She goes. Sheriff's Dar Dar had the sheriff over there. I don't know what was happening, but I'm sure he was helping her. Wanda and her husband drove And Wanda has lived in Louisiana, most of her life and in that sweet accent, her sweet voice and one is a very nice lady. She said To me, she goes Jason. She goes. I've lived through Rita Katrina I've lived through and she listed off the Hurricanes. She goes. This is the worst I've ever seen. It took them six hours. It took them six hours to drive home in a drive that should have taken them an hour. She said. There are electrical wire got caught under their tyres, and they couldn't remove it, so they had to drive for miles with that wire under their RV, she said. Yeah, she said, It looks the roads. You know They're Tris, she said. It looks like A movie set. She was she's never seen in all of the Hurricanes that she's had to deal with. She's never seen the level of destruction and Lake Charles that Laura Enacted on this on the city. So does your mom live to that bio lab? That chemical file that started? Yeah, There's the other layer of luckily my mom. Yeah, There's a chemical leak. Everyone that started. I think they make pool chemicals. Unluckily. She's aways from that plant. She's kind of on the other end of town. Thank goodness pictures of that with the chlorine going into the air like that, And then then they said, You know, the sheltered place at home. You know, they just said You can't leave at that point, too. Yeah, So it's just so right now, you know, my main concern with Mom is The the heat. You know what I mean? The fact that she has no electricity, So you know she's going in her car to cool downs with Lee. She has that, but just days and days without electricity, you know Obviously, thank goodness I have a level of appreciation just for the fact that my mom is walking around because the loss of life and property the amount of trees that crashed in the roofs. That could have been my mom. I mean, my mom, you know she could have been crushed or the house could have been taken away watching the news and seeing these families with their their properties. My goodness. I felt very lucky to even have my mom. So whatever happens now, I told her we can deal with. I said, you know, you have damage We can get that fixed. I I can't replace you. I said, Well, everything else we can. Yeah, we can handle everything else. I mean, well. I told her I said, you know, Colin, my father in law and myself, We can go down there. You know, I'm not real handy, but my father in law is Colin is we can build new stairs for her. You know, it was all of that crap. We can You know what I mean? We can fix things. But my mom's around first people first girl seriously, I have a whole new appreciation for that. So again Thanks, everybody. For your your worry and your your heartfelt concern. It really meant a lot to me. And I know it means a lot toe T my mom so It is coming up on 7 14 Stay right there. We'll be back right after these words, everyone..

Yang Feng Glan: The Ivory Queen

"Two thousand sixteen. Dozens of international newspapers splashed variations of one headline. Who is the Ivory Queen across the world activists reporters and locals were clamoring to know what crimes sixty-six-year-old Yang Thing Glenn had committed as a Chinese ex-pat based in Tanzania? She owned a popular restaurant strong. In Dar es Salaam the country's largest city the Beijing restaurant was the best place in town for authentic Chinese food. Dozens of locals worked as waiters. Their Yang promoted her restaurant as a place for everyone. A place to grow community ties but in late two thousand and fifteen authorities charged that she'd been using her restaurant as a front behind the delicious food.
