Adding The Human Element To B2B Sales
"Thanks so much for joining today Dan. Thank you so much for having me. Greatly appreciate you have on your podcast. Well, I, love talking about sales. That's one of my favorite subjects. So I I am thrilled to have you here I'd like to start by asking you. We're GONNA. Be Talking about B. Two B. Sales and B. Two B. Buyers and. I'm wondering. What kinds of pain points Do, they typically have during a purchasing process. That's a that's a great question, and I think a lot of things that B. Two B. buyers have is just uncertainty and we're kind of also in a world of uncertainty as kind of going on in the current situation, and that just adds more uncertainty and where the BB seller or the salesperson helps with that kind of to help alleviate that uncertainty, and typically what we see is kind of falls on a couple of key areas. One is consistency in quality of the product. Product, information the accuracy of product information, and as a company that sells these products as it start selling multiple different marketplaces the consistency of the quality and the accuracy of that information diminishes and as a buyer in a lot of the BBC base you're creating engineering products, chemical products, and it has to meet very specific specifications, and when you get into a world of uncertainty, you start to really worry or or question whether or not that product is going to work for you. and that's really what we started to see when I beyond our be report where we reached out to those `buyers and said, what are the things that you run out and see When it's really that. And we saw that ninety, two percents of those B2B buyers say if they get qualified salesperson that will really help them make it through this downturn and bring certainty in this this time of uncertainty. That's so interesting. Okay. So What do they mean by qualified salesperson mean someone who's knowledgeable about their circumstance as well as their own product, and when I say there I mean the the buyer. Yeah No Totally. So, we'll people really are looking for when they qualified is a strategic advisor, and when you think about what strategic advisor does is that they're helping guide you through purchasing decisions. They're looking out for your best interests. They understand what you're in the business of and starts to make recommendations on the products that make the most sense they think about how they can. Can help you reduce cost of doing business. They help you think about how they could be a part of your your revenue process. They start to tell you these are the things that we can do that. Make your job easier, and when they look at that, we saw that seventy one percent really want someone who knows their own products and. And Services and can go in there and say, Hey, listen, this is exactly what you need in order to be successful. Here's why what they don't want is someone who's acting as a sales per it's the sale, right? Like I want to I want something to I, want this transaction to go through that completely turns buyers off where it's like, Hey, look. Look Oh. You want to buy widget one. I'll sell that too because that's what you want. What they really want is someone who comes in and says, this is what really needs to happen in order to be successful and I understand your business. Here's why and here's how I can alleviate some of the uncertainty around what it is you're trying to do.
You Dont Exist. But You Actually Do
"In this episode, we're going to take a simple useful down to earth stroll through one of the most confounding liberating concepts in Buddhism. On. The one hand. Buddhists. Tell us the self is an illusion. You don't exist. On the other hand they tell us well, actually on some level you do, of course exist. So which is it? The answer this frustrating the answer is both. But this concept which is called not self selflessness Igla snus or emptiness. This concept does not have to be some hopelessly esoteric riddle. It is actually a game changer that we can all apply in our own lives. Here to tell us how to do that. Guy, Armstrong, who has been a meditation teacher in insight tradition for decades, he's written a book called emptiness. He is the husband of Sally Armstrong who appeared on the show just a few weeks ago. I. Actually conducted the interviews back to back last fall. But. Even though this was recorded before the record events twenty, twenty, the concepts here in our I, assure you. Perennially us. So here we go with Armstrong. Well, nice to see you again, thanks for coming on Nice to see you Dan. So the latest die back into your. biography, just a little bit. What was it about back in the seventies about meditation? No. What was it about your life that the practice of meditation and the? Teachings of the Buddha, such a big deal for you that you actually. You. Had Gone to a fancy college if I recall rice in Houston and you've worked in Silicon Valley and you were teaching at a alternative school in Palo. Alto. You basically put all that to the side and became, as you said, a Dermot Bum. Why? Well, it was two things I'd had a long standing interest in Buddhism. Really from my college days, it just spoke to me philosophically in a way that no other system ever had. There was a depth of precision and accuracy the really resonated with me, and the second thing was I was not very happy in my life at that time, I came out of the sixties and my life was really unsettled and I I did a little too much of all the things that people did too much of the sixties. Victor. and. So I was still trying to put my life back together and I never felt invested in the worldly things that I was engaged in. So this Dharma practice came along and I remember sitting on my first retreat. And I reached into a level of stillness of mind that I had never felt before. and. I think what struck me at that time? Was the basic. You could call it in this. You could call it space that meditation. In my mind I felt anything is possible in this place. So looking back now on that experience, what I tapped into was the basic emptiness or you know more congenial word is openness. Of Our mind, our basic situation I saw anything was possible. And I. I must admit I was really drawn by the concept of enlightenment. But there could be transformative moments of insight that would change your life forever you know in a positive way. said two things in there. I WANNA follow up on. We say anything is possible. Do you mean you could play for the NBA? You could learn how to fly. What do you mean when you say I, don't suspect you do to what do you mean exactly when you say anything is possible in that space by meant that the mind could be. Shaped or formed in any direction one wanted I just saw this vast potential of the space in the mind that was revealed through that stillness. And I knew that any degree of suffering that had come into my life didn't need to be there.

The Importance of Looking Upstream with Dan Heath
"Have, you ever gotten those spots where you start treating your business, your leadership, your team, maybe even your family and quite frankly your entire life like a game of mole, like you hit this one thing and you think you're good, and then another thing pops up and then another thing boss up. Then you have to hit two things at once and then you need five hands because you have to five things at once they keep coming up and you're going frantic and you're going crazy and you just can't get to all of it. Have you ever been there? Whenever you engage in that version of life. That's a lot like whack a mole. You start to realize that you're focusing only on symptoms and you never actually get to the source from the Ramsey network. This is the entree leadership podcast where we business leaders grow themselves, their teams and their profits. I'm your host. Alex Jed. Today, we get to talk with Dan Heath WHO's an author and researcher who has spent over a decade working on this exact. Exact topic, not just how you as a leader solve problems, but how do you prevent them from ever occurring? How do you not just attack the symptom, but get down to the source to the root cause. Now, he calls this upstream thinking and it's the title of his new book upstream and this whole idea that can transform your priorities, your leadership, and your team would all originated with a parable about you having a picnic by the river? So you and a friend are having a picnic beside a river. You've laid out your picnic blanket. You're just preparing to sit down and eat when you hear a shout behind you from the direction of the river and you look back and there's a child and the river. Kinda thrashing around apparently drowning and. Instinctively jump in both of you and you fish the child out you bring them to shore and Just. When you're adrenaline starting to recede a little bit, you hear a second. Shout, you look back and it's another child also apparently drowning. So you go. You rescue them, bring them to shore, and no sooner. Have you done now that you hear to shouts now it's two kids in the river, and so you're in, you're out, you're rescuing kids and you're starting to get exhausted. And about that time your friend swims to shore and starts walking away as though to leave you alone and you say, Hey, where you going I can't do this by myself. All these kids they need rescuing, and your friend says I'm going upstream to tackle the guy who's thrown all these kids in the river, and that in a nutshell is what this book is about. It's about this phenomenon. What's so often life whether it's our personal life or a businesses we get trapped in the cycle of reaction, we're putting out fires responding to emergencies. We're always. Always downstream dealing with problems after they happen, but we rarely make the space. We rarely devote the time and attention that we would need to go upstream and forestalled head off these problems before they ever happen, and that's what I'm chasing with this. I'd love to know what was the genesis of this thought being a book for you. Where did that come from? As something that you said man I want to spend a ton of time studying researching and writing about that. The first time I started a file called upstream was in two thousand nine. And two things that happened was I heard that parable for the first time. Then it was the first time. This notion of upstream thinking was planted in my head, and the other is around the time. I heard that parable I had this conversation with the assistant deputy chief of police in Canadian city, and he told me this story of this thought experiment really stuck with me ever since and he said, imagine you've got to police officers and one of them goes down in the morning during the morning rush. And she positions herself in this intersection. That's kind of notorious. It's chaotic. Accidents there, and just by being a visible presence in that intersection, she calms people down. She gets them to be more cautious and she prevents accidents from happening. So that's officer one. and. Then officer to go to a different part of downtown where there is prohibited right turn signal, and she hides around the corner and when people cheat and and make that prohibited right turn. She jumps out and slaps them with the ticket. And this deputy chief said, which of these two officers do you think did more for the public good and for public safety and he said? Indisputably was the first right. She probably prevented some accidents maybe even prevented someone from being killed. But if you ask who is going to be praised who's going to be rewarded, who's going to be promoted, it's officer to because she comes back with a stack of tickets that show what she's accomplished, and meanwhile, if you think about officer one, how does she prove? She did anything. You know how do you prove that something did not happen. And we might say, well, you can look at data and that's certainly true I mean. We could keep a log of how many accidents happen at this intersection before and after the officer was stationed there, and if there's a downtick claimed credit for that. But notice even in that scenario where we have the data backing up our work, we still don't know. Know who exactly was helped? There was some guy headed downtown to go to his job that morning and he noticed the presence of the officer. He slowed down a little bit. He was fine in an alternate reality where she wasn't there. He would have been in a crash in died that morning. He'll never know that that's right. Officer will never know who? Who she helped. So there's this kind of maddening ambiguity about upstream work that even though it's essential, even though it can stop problems before they happen. It also brings a lot of ambiguity and complexity, and in that idea coupled with that parable Kinda. Got Me hooked and I've been fascinated by ever since

Why Do Balloons Stick To Our Hair?
"Why do balloons stick to our hair? Brain stuff is Christian Sagar here when you were a kid, did you ever rub a balloon really fast against your hair to make it stick what about as an adult well, after many years of speculation Case Western Reserve University scientists have pinpointed exactly why this party trick happens. We've known forever that when two objects are rubbed against each other, there's a build up of an electrical charge called static electricity or tribe electric charging. If the two objects have opposite charges positive and negative, they'll stick together but some objects appear to charge more or stick more closely together than others like the balloon on your hair now wise that according. To a new study published in the Journal Physical Review Materials. The crux of the phenomenon lies in how strained the balloon material is for the purpose of this study, the scientists stretched a film of Polly tetrafluoroethane the lean let's call it p. t. f. e. for now that's one of the brand names. For Teflon, they took that and they rubbed it against a film of unstrained unstretched PTSD and they found that even though the materials were chemically identical, they generated charge transfer in one direction as if they had two different chemical compositions, the stretched or strange sheet carried the positive charge. Well, the unstrained sheet carried a negative charge. The more strained the material was the more likely. It was to experience systematic charge transfer. This is because the micro structure of the material was altered when strain leading to tiny holes and cracks. These imperfections allowed the rubbing induced friction to facilitate charge transfer leading to static electricity in a press release. Co Author Dan Lacks explained that they think the void regions in the fibers are tiny cell fibers. They think that those were strained when the polymer had different bonding and thus a charge that was different. The researchers also examined the phenomenon using packing peanuts which just love to stick to people's arms. In fact, polystyrene peanuts and plastic bags are currently being closely examined to give us a better understanding of static. Electricity Ideally, scientists will nail it down. So precisely that they will be able to control it, helping to prevent tribe electric explosions such as explosions of coal dust in mines and develop more effective products. For example, pesticides that will stick better to plants or paints that will stick better to cars. It may not seem that dangerous but in fact, static electricity can ignite fuel vapors at the gas pump causing fire to avoid such a catastrophe try not to get back in the car after you start the fueling process because sliding across the seat generates static electricity. If you must re enter your vehicle, be sure to ground yourself I when you get back out by touching the metal part of your car door.

Interview With Andrew Bernstein
"In his lengthy career. He's developed many friendships, not least of which was with Kobe Bryant with whom he collaborated the book. The Mamba, mentality how I play. And career special not because of the many iconic image he's made, but because he's demonstrated that he is the kind of man who puts in the extra effort and time to be a great photographer, a good father and a good man. This is about an ex in welcome back to the candidate frame. A first off welcome. Welcome to the show. It's have you thank you very much happy to year. Always Nice to talk to a legend. Old? I know. We talk a lot about your career as a sports photographer and that's we're going to spend a lotta time doing but I always to talk to sports, photographers or anyone who's been covering the game for a long time, always like hearing the story of the first live event smart event that they ever went to. That was like significant for them. What would that be? The first one I shot like no other one shot, but. went to maybe as a kid well, that's a great question I would have to say a grew up. A mets fan I. also a Rangers Fan growing up. I remember distinctly go into a myths game with my dad. I probably was maybe seven or eight. And, we were sitting behind home plate at Shea Stadium frankly sort halfway up, maybe third deck or something in. A foul ball team our way straight back. Identity shoved me out of the way in cod with one round. Tremendous amount it's been going. You know I'll never forget that I'm glad you remind me of that. That was fifty something years ago. An amazing that's A. Great Memory have first game. Yeah, well, it's better than getting in the head with a puck. But it would. No it was, it was a great memory. I had that ball forever I. Don't know what happened to it. In various moves over the years on the hockey side remember going to see the Rangers play in back. In the day we used to Go the old Madison Square Garden. This is the garden that was up on Tenth Avenue. I believe before they built the new garden in one, thousand, nine, hundred, seventy one. And the old guard, and had these pillars that you know. The new garden had the suspended ceiling. We made it so revolutionary. The Old Guard was Lee elda auditorium in at these pillars came down, and they sold seats literally behind the pillars that would call obstructed view seats. Added stamped on the ticket obstructed view. And you, literally sitting behind the pillar, and that's where me, the kid with always stupid behind the pillar. Every single time by Dan we get the tickets were like fifty cents. So that's what my earliest memories ago to raise your AIDS, I went to I can't remember which was first where there was a rams game at the coliseum that was my first, or whether it was dodger game. Experienced that I, remember was just the noise of so many people. And just it's unlike any other feeling I ever had were have dislike. Thousands of thousands of people around you at the same time, and there's something that I think is. Very lowering about that whether you are a sports fan as Lords player in your case of a photographer and talked to me about the intoxication of just that feeling at that sound. And, what it does for you especially when you're out there virtually in the center of it, it's still funny and bringing this up because the last. Or so this is gonNA sound really weird, but I've had this crazy ringing in my ear might. Equally right, it never experience, so go to the doctor. Get a hearing test the whole thing that they do. I would've loved the there with my wife, and my daughter up the road to a friend's house to watch the first half who are the Super Bowl they had a Super Bowl pointed. But thankfully, I had a nice chair in front of a big TV trying to avoid a whole lot of chatting. I said hi to everybody when I first got there. So then I can kind of be antisocial just focus on the game. While it was going on. You have a choice to not go to the party. I did. But I had blown it off a few other times. And in speaking with my wife, she said let why don't we go for the first half may or may not stay for the, you know, the halftime show. And then she promised me we'd get backed by the second half. So I could sit at my laptop and watch the game in the privacy, everyone homework on guests and all that kind of thing. So I worked on nicely. Got some food said hi to some friends and by by the start of the third quarter. I was home. And it was it was quite lovely. I went into. An isolation chamber in the bedroom and headroom. Yeah. So the bedroom. That's probably I'm not a huge TV you're dealing with. No, I had a small TV, but the distractions downstairs with the kids I did not want to risk it. Not the issue was I had made a huge Chile two kinds of meat. No big deal. And I had to eat that in the bedroom, which my wife was upset. I'm like at Super Bowl. We all have to do things adjustable with adjust. Yeah. I did the same actually not in the in the bedroom..

I'm one of the heads of the I team Connors all over this report. We'll talk to Chris Mannix in a few minutes guys, how you feeling our one. Is there any chance we're going to get pulled its head? The I have a feeling Dan may come in like a Trevor Hoffman situation, like takeover our three. If you hear enter Sandman star playing, that's when you know that back door is going to open up to you. Pick your dad's face when he comes in and sees Todd for it city right there, he would immediately do a one eighty and go right back to bed. There's there's no reason at that point or maybe this is our, this is our motivation. We put you in his chair. He synagogue. I'm back. He's destroying our show Pearson this, seeing, what do you have for the IT report? Well, it's as you know, if you guys followed the techs gene from last night, Dan Texas, pretty late at night early in the morning. So I say, and, hey, it's not looking good and then reconfirmed a few hours later that he couldn't do it. And so we all Dan wrote in no go today guy. Sorry we were Hokke feel better. Okay. Get some sleep. We'll work out the show, feel better, etc. Just moments away just moments ago. I got word from Dan. He wrote back. Thanks. Wow, major update from Dan, spell it out, or was it a t h. Okay. That's how you know he's sick. It was the full word. It wasn't THX the full word. That means that he's sick. Yeah, that means he's bedridden and has time to text. Yeah. Yeah. Didn't even do that. Comes up logo it into a k. he didn't do anything. He did a full. Thanks. He's clearly not in his normal normal cell czar. Wow. I heard a rumor to he was getting sick yesterday in the afternoon. There was an early IT report. So yeah, I think we're safe for the rest of the. I think we've got two more hours boys. You know, we could dump the second hour and try to raise him up for our three. It's happened before we've done it. Can we take the show on the road to Dan's Place here wherever sleeping and try and get him out of bed? Do we have that capability technical now? They said, no, you're listening to live to Dan Patrick's commode. All right. This guy, this guy will bring the show back to earth joining us. Now on the Dan patch show, Chris Mannix of Yahoo. Sports covers boxing covers NBA. He was out in Los Angeles and still is Chris right off the bat. When you heard that we were hosting today and we didn't call you, your thoughts went to wear well. My immediate reaction was well, I am in LA so that would have been challenging. However, I'm not that far from the direct TV studio here, so I probably could have done it like remotely if they could have said that up in in some way from like rich Eisen chair. But, but let me ask you guys this like over under until NBC 'Send cuts to like speedboat racing. That's a great call have check. I don't know where we are. There's some and also like I mean, you could also do a second over under before audience start showing, you know, NYPD blue reruns like I mean, what. What do you think like before the end of the sour? I see the TS on NBC Dubai equestrian championships coming up next. I didn't see that audience has Mr. Mercedes reruns go on anywhere art. Mannix. You're out in l. a. you're at the press conference for the LA Lakers is that one of the bigger scenes that you've been part of an NBA history? I mean, look, it had kind of a deep in the playoffs feel to it in terms of number of media members, everybody nationally was represented. You know, the local papers are all kinda doubling up on their Laker coverage..
