Ryan Girdusky: The Reason to Start 1776 Project Pac

"The problem as well Having run for office myself and having lost it was a great experience because you're right when you don't have a competitive primary for say president governor or senator on the Republican side And we don't have one for Ron DeSantis which is a good thing He's a great governor We don't want him to waste assets in a silly primary but the downside Ryan you're not getting the mailers You're not seeing the TV commercials So a lot of people you know they live busy lives They're going to take their kids to soccer games I got to go to work get food on the table They're just not seeing it like the Democrats are who have a competitive primary for governor So it's our responsibility to go to the county board of elections blank county whatever you live in Martin county where I live doesn't matter Fill it in put in board of elections It's your responsibility isn't it to know when these primaries are and how to vote Yeah no it's so it's so essential And it's one of these elections Everyone really cares about the sexy politics They want to know about the governor the president of the senator And even like donors I mean talking to donors constantly about these elections are like well I'm making sure we win X Y or Z congressional or Senate seat And I'm like that's fine But the amount of effort just to put in just to get that extra little number of Republicans and conservatives over the line for school board is so much lower but it's so much harder at the same time The reason that I started my pack last year and last year we did 58 school board elections I've never started a super PAC by myself before We did 58 elections I mean one 42 of them And the reason we won 42 is because my entire focus in such an off off year cycle was to sit there and just increase Republican turnout for maybe 10% to 13% And because Democrats honestly a lot of more voting either that was enough to win in places like Montgomery county Pennsylvania which voted for Hillary Biden Obama very liberal place We won 6 of our 8 school board

Democrats Know They're Going to Lose Elections, but Still Play the Long Game

"Every single thing that the left is doing it's a very it's all planned out Bernie Sanders and AOC and these other people in Congress they really believe that the ultimate goal here is transformational change of our country And they don't just mean by having Democrats elected Like it's not the goal here It's really not I know it sounds like it is but it isn't In fact they would rather lose than have moderate Democrats I use quotes around the word moderate They're not moderates but they've moderate districts that have them win in control things You think I'm kidding They believe this is a long game for them They do Long game they have plenty of time Change is hard change shakes time It's not about winning It's not about power It's about change It's about control and change If they wanted to just be in power then they would just shift whichever way the wind was shifting on things But they're not doing that You realize now they know they're going to lose in midterm elections They're not changing anything They're going full war Sensible rational people We look at the results of the election the last election we had They look at the school board elections Moms and dads coming out Speaking out saying I don't want this critical race theory I don't want you shutting down schools I'm tired of masks I'm tired of vaccine mandates They would look at what voters said in Virginia They'd look at what voters said in New Jersey They look at my man Ed durn south Jersey beating a Democrat who nobody thought could be beaten They would see what happened there and they would readjust I mean for everything you can say about the guy Bill Clinton and Democrats of the mid 90s were smart enough to realize if we don't if we don't change here we're gonna get decimated so they did They played ball with new gingrich They balanced the budget They went with this These Democrats aren't changing anything They're going full it They're actually they want to spend more money than they did the day before the election You know why Because they know they're going to

"Can say what they want. You can't go into a restaurant to stand there and shout. You know the food sucks. We're gonna make you leave. That's not censorship it so i. I don't have any issue with twitter. Kicking him off or twitter kicking me off or anything like that because it's just you know it's their right to do that now. That's where it does make sense though that they might want to rival. Aws or google cloud and have their own cloud platform to host things. Because i believe parlor was on. Aws and amazon kicked them off because they were Like a lot of hate speech and pro violence and so on. So we'll see what happens but to be honest you know. The trump name as a brand has been valued all over the place he counted as an asset and he can value it at whatever he wants. Apparently get away with that. And i i was looking up like what what parts of this are valued at. What and. I couldn't find anything like that. But i do think that when it comes to goofball stuff on tv. Trump is where it's at. He's an entertainer. So you might at some point. Make some money for him. Well make more money. It is compelling. Entertainment is sorta like watching the races waiting for the crashes If you want a depressing stat of the week it comes from the quinnipiac university. National poll seventy eight percent of republicans. Wanna see trump run for president in twenty twenty four. I don't have anything. I want to add to that other than if you few tears. I'll add that. The republican party membership is shrinking especially though since january six so it doesn't really surprise me that the people left are jordanian trump faithful. But here's another depressing thing. Michigan secretary of state candidate christine. Karemo horrible candidate was scheduled to speak at accua non conference last weekend. I assumed she went through with that. But i couldn't find anything. After the event took place october. Twenty second through twenty fifth. I did find somebody of the event but the thing from her. So i'm sure she did very well on the patriot bell curve. The event was called for god and country patriot. Double down and You know i'll let you just let your imagination wild with that ridiculousness if you're jocelyn benson you're looking forward to the idea of running against christina kerama oh because She's another one of those far far far out extremists. Who is a true believer in. Apparently the things that cunanan fridges with the child. Molesting and the the basements out of basements in pizza parlors in washington. The whole nine yards and of course the big lie eight shea has an her a candidate website that she currently leads a research team comprised of former secretary of state personnel investigating quote unquote governmental pathologies which prevent the office of the secretary of state from operating according to the rule of law. What does that mean. just leave that out there. I don't understand what that means. But she says her team holds complete operational understanding of election system failures and inefficiency ed forms. The basis of christina's day. One policy team. This is some freaky stuff governmental pathologies something that solid and about policy and may actually result in something good happening coming out of the legislature. The state officials are working on a two and a half billion dollar plan focused on replacing water lines across the state and improving the safety of dams and installing filtering systems in schools. This has responded by a republican in the state. Senate john bumster from the waco. The goal to make transformational improvements to the state's water infrastructure to benefit michigan generations to michigan residents for generations to come and as much as i bad mouth the legislature for being upped. The sack of worthless political hack. Sometimes this is something very positive and if they can make this happen also something really nice about the legislature down the road but for now it is just something that. They're working on attorney. General dana nessel joined a bipartisan coalition of fifteen attorneys general calling on congress to pass the local journalism sustainability act of twenty twenty one. This act would provide tax credits that will help subscribers and advertisers support. Their local newspaper plus provide a payroll credit for local papers to hire local journalists. The letter sent by the attorneys general. Also states that regional journalism is critical. Local newspapers are responsible for half my country's original reporting although they only account for one quarter of media outlets the letter also cites a twenty nineteen report that showed people trust local media more than other media when they feel that their local news providers are connected to the community and that connection is built by reporting on local needs and concerns and investigating issues. That may not get attention from larger. Outlets and i feel deep in my soul. This is uncle news as well. That if you get a subscription to your local paper even though you think junk Because that is your cheer only hope if that goes under now here i know in lansing. We've got a weekly paper that is barely survived for years Through the largest primarily of government placed ads and marijuana ads but still does some really excellent local reporting and has been important at the state level. The best the most in-depth reporting by far bridge michigan. Which is a nonprofit is funded mostly by foundations but the commercial papers continues to struggle even the detroit news and the detroit. Free press have their financial issues and are constantly reducing their editorial staff. And when you get down to the smaller newspapers in the state it is really getting into a desperate situation. This i think is really important. We've got to maintain these voices. These local voices that are looking at city hall that are looking at your local drain. Commissioner that are following your school boards and the other things that are going on in your community. They're so important right now. Local newspapers about the only thing they can afford to cover in any depth is sports and sports is really nice and all that but it's not formative our society by any means and there's undercover and there was a two when i first started in lansing many many many years ago. The leads state journal had a fulltime city hall reporter who was excellent. Now they cover city hall mostly through press releases and phone calls and they have somebody doing it part time and it's not because the paper doesn't want to cover it. They simply economically can't justify it. They've lost all of that classified advertising to the internet. They've lost a lot of display. Advertising to the internet and subscribers increasingly are getting their news from other sources where a lot of times they're reporting is being repeated such as like on facebook and huffington post and the newspapers not getting compensated for providing that coverage brian. More and more of them now have to go behind pay walls because it's the only way they can protect their content. That cost so much to produce. So i i think this is a really great idea. I don't want to get into the details of what. The congressional act proposes but the idea of using some mechanism to keep local journalism alive. I think is critically important to our society. I agree and i wanna plug local bloggers who report on a local issues. That don't get picked up even by local papers. Winning sample was Back when i was blogging. Oncho osce county now. I had opinions. I never claim to be. You know an objective burden on by journalists. But i did use store and i would foia things and find out that our administrative overhead at the health department average twelve percent higher than anybody else's any other counties michigan stuff like that can lead to your local journal or journalists your local newspaper covering it and bringing their resources to bear to find out what's going on there so Check them out as well. Yeah maybe they would expand it to cover podcast the recovering issues on public policy. And i wouldn't say this for for podcasts. Like ours. But i would also go on the other side of the fence to some of the conservative podcast which are really good. Bill ballot. a great podcast. Disagree with most of what he says. But to really good podcast and you get others like the merged a monday a podcast which is excellent Those are the types of things that very small listener basis and they really could use some support to keep them alive. Important tools. One last note for me christine. I know you've got another one as well but for me Some of the most controversial tools used to create jobs. All fall into the category of government incentives. Which has origins talking about for local papers but this is the big stuff for the factories. The claim that they're gonna create thousands of thousands of jobs they could be tax breaks free or subsidized land. Government paid infrastructure improvements. It is simply too nuanced and complex to handle the entire issue on the podcast. The pros and the cons. I would highly recommend that you instead. Check out a one. Hour discussion hosted by michigan state. University's institute for public policy and social research on state business incentive programs includes experts from multiple perspectives including the very conservative mackinac center which wants to end all subsidies as well as former state and local officials negotiated incentives. We have a link to the full video on our website. It's about an hour long which is really what it takes to understand the issue. If this is something that you think you would find our concern. Check it out. It's a really good program. It's on youtube free to watch and well worth the time. A lot of great content. Come out of that institute for public policy and social research and take a minute to thank. Msu for all of the Work that they do on this and that they share with us out now My last note for the week and a highlight from the week hearing again from a former president who has re engaged in campaigns rather than dwelling on delusions about twenty twenty stumping in both the virginia and new jersey gubernatorial campaigns iraq obama reminds us. The battle is about the future. I know why sometimes pose just get tired and maybe they say you know i'm not gonna bother voting this time but here's the thing we can't afford to be time. I remember twenty sixteen folks said you know i'm not inspired obama's okay but we didn't get everything i wanted so i'm just going to say the next you know y'all know how that turned up. That's what happens when you're not paying attention. That's what happens when you become complacent or you. Let your frustration lead to inaction. We cannot afford to be tired because of the young people here and the ones who are coming. I know it's hard. I didn't solve every problem when i was president. But the fact is that as hard as it is. We can still make it better. It's hard to undo the legacy of discrimination that goes back centuries but we can make better. It's hard to deal with special interest. Who want to keep the status quo when you're trying to make the economy more fair and just but you can make it better. It's hard in a big country where people disagree to get everybody moving in the same direction but we can do better than we're doing all we can make it better and when you got the right person in the job we might not get every single person employed but we can get more people more jobs. I didn't get every american healthcare. But boy we've got a whole lot more people in america deference when. We decided to make things better. You've got somebody in your corner. Who's shown you that they will work for you. Who has a track record of accomplishment. You gotta go out there and work for them. Not because everything's gonna suddenly be perfect but because it's going to be better and your prevent others for making it work and that's a wrap for this week's podcast if you'd like more information on this week's topics head on over to our website which is www dot michigan. "A step forward at least yes and we have. We also public opinion data in michigan and we show that Not allowed people are paying a lot of attention. Most people have heard just a small amount about the commission but nonetheless an overwhelming majority. Expect the maps produced by the commission to be better than the maps that came before us so Although the commission may be getting some negative attention while revises the maps I'm not quite as worried that the public will move against the commission or the change toward the commission because people still see this process as better than what preceded as a political scientist. You must be intrigued by the dynamics of the congressional races were losing a seat and as it stands right. now we've got multiple members of congress that could be in the same district maybe moving around What do you see. How do you see the shaking out in the end right. The commission was explicitly supposed to act kind of ignore current incumbents and they certainly did that Both in the congressional races and in the in the state legislative races and so that is going to produce some incumbent on in combat Races as well as some districts that don't have current incumbent But i think that that was that was attended now in the congressional races. They people do not actually have to live in their districts at run they represent state And of course There will be people may move to a district to better represent represented so we would expect that to occur with lansing area district and slacken moving into it. If it doesn't include her parents Home address you put together and coordinated What i would call redistricting went to one when the commission was first established providing some educational background. For the commissioner's just members of the general public had no particular expertise in redistricting as their professor. Agreed would you give them right now. I think the process has hall is going. Well i think the commissioners are are worn out by doing a good job. I think that their consultants though may not get as as high grade in particular. I think that it should. They should have been told that. Win the advice that they were getting was fairly idiosyncratic. So it's not that they're voting rights consultants. I was completely certainly wrong. And it's not that the study that was conducted off for them Was completely totally wrong. but they should have been told that some of these things are not consensus versions of interpretations And so they should be involving more outside experts earlier in the process to confirm that the analysis that they're getting from their consultants is one that they can rely on matt grossman from the institute for public policy and social research and michigan state university to echo. The words of our friend. Arnold schwarzenegger will be back are great thanks to met. Professor matt grossman for joining us on the podcast and he will be back later after the final maps are voted on by the commission. That is going to come some time. In december it looks like and he's going to continue to analyze those mazza great resource one interesting. No day was. It was confirmed to me during the week by elissa slots campaign that. She's already looking to purchase a home in the lansing area. She's moven because she could see that. Her new district is going to be based in ingham county and she needs to move out of oakland county because her home in holly will no longer be in the district. She runs it. It is not required that she live in the district where she runs but as a practical matter She needs to especially because the district. She'll be running. It'll probably have a slight republican edge. She'll be running against a very strong candidate who somebody i know. You don't like your state senator. Tom barrett he in all likelihood will be the republican candidate. And it's going to be one of the most expensive race in the nation and it was pointed out to me that even though slatkin's tremendous fundraising has about four million dollars in the bank. What she has raised is really nothing. Compared to what will be spent. It'll be fifty to one. Hundred million dollars will be at race mostly by outside groups so it's Buckle up it's coming. Yeah and and i have a faith analyst and i really like her but tom barrett's very charismatic. And you know he's he's a good speaker and he presents himself as really nice guy. he's actually a loon. But you know i mean. It's not really that doesn't make him an outsider at all with republicans. Okay so let's take a look at some political no let's let's begin with the fundraising for the gubernatorial campaign and again it's like the congressional races. The money raised by the candidates is not the most important part. at least. For the general election governor whitmer continues to out raise the republicans massive amounts. She pulled another three point. One million dollars in the last quarter. She now has nearly thirteen million dollars in the bank. But it's going to be fifty seventy five hundred million dollar campaigns. That's just a tiny fraction of what will be spent what is more revealing. I think is what the republicans have raised. Because they're gonna need for the primary and there it's more on candidate fundraising that it is on special interest fundraising and chief. Craig reported one point four million dollars in donations and almost a half man expenses. He has almost a million dollars in the bank. Which is pretty good puts him in the lead garrett soldano who continues to be a fundraising machine for a total outsider. He raised a half million dollars increasing his total fundraising. One point one million and he's got about a half million still available in the bank. He's going to be a real problem for the establishment if you will call them that republicans who want chief. Craig and tutor. Dixon did okay. She's got about one hundred sixty six thousand in the bank The rest of them are just kind of Asterisks on the campaign finance reports. It's going to be a very bloody republican primary. And i'm looking forward to it. Yeah meets it leads. You know again garissa. That would be a train wreck as governor. I hope that never happens. But he's seriously. I kind of respect his candidacy. Because he's he just seems legit. He's the only yard sign. I've seen in this area so he's got some kind of game out here you know he's charismatic. I mean he talks and talks. Oh absolutely i mean. There's there's nothing actually good about him. True theropods say maybe i mean. He's obviously successful at something. But holy cow speak money. Yes in gosh. Donald effing trump. Okay his next rift. First up he launches a new social media platform named truth passing all capital letters of ruth and putting it in the simplest terms. It's a child of trump media and technology group that's enabled the company trump media and technology group But again That's really simple terms. You'd have to kind of look at the website to see more about how that's set up According to trump the taliban is on twitter but he is not allowed to be on twitter. And that ain't right. So according to him again. The first project of this new company is this social media platform truth which launches in beta next month. Now the second phase of this Business initiative the has no plan is a subscription video on demand. service that is meant to rival net flicks and hulu and so on and his third phase in this business is to have some sort of service that rivals aws and google cloud platform. At part of it. I don't really understand but apparently he's got big plans.

"And we can make him a forward you know reminds me in a very personal level of the tendency of human beings to be in denial until almost too late and it involves my father who was a very heavy smoker. He was the only smoker in our family. The rest of us would nag him constantly. To give it up we would be knew intellectually. It was bad for him but it didn't matter he was hooked and he continued to smoke a couple of packs a day. Then one day he was diagnosed with emphysema which ultimately killed him took about five years but the emphysema did result in his death. The day he was diagnosed with emphysema. He quit smoking. And it's the same way with climate. We know intellectually and we've known intellectually for a long time that there is a coming crisis because of climate change but to many of us were in denial about the steps that we needed to take then to prevent what is happening now but now that it's happening more and more people come to the realization. That action is needed. I justin so hopeful that it's not too late. Although the latest numbers from the international science consortium is that our output of greenhouse gases an all time high is going up not down when it desperately desperately desperately needs to go down. But that's just one of the problems that we've got with the climate bill to joe. Manchin is gutting We've also got the problem with. Apparently he doesn't like the idea of expanding k. Twelve education so it includes two years of community college for free. There is more knowledge. Now than when the k twelve system was set up a hundred hundred fifty years ago. There's more to learn and to me. And to joe biden it's simply just makes sense that we expand free universal public education. Because that's what's made the such a strong country. Also among the first to provide access to free education getting back in the late eighteen hundreds early nineteen hundreds. We invested in our children. Does anybody think today for making that decision. For the first time we'd say twelve years enough in the twenty first century twelve years. Enough is not back then they did. And it's a reason why we left ahead of the rest of the world. Plus he's gonna be catching a lot of crap at home to after all. His wife teaches at a community college. Which has gotta make life a little rough but expanding preschool for toddlers. There's a lot of data showing it. A project head start for for one was very cost. Effective by expanding preschools. Kids start going to school at three and four instead of five and then the two years of community college at the other end there are studies showing that that makes sense economically that it really enhances people's ability to make a solid living whether it's in the trades or it's in healthcare or a lot of other fields read on your four year degree but that two year degrees very important you know on the front end with the pre k. Stuff i mean. That's twin when their little brains are the most you know as the neural plasticity or something where they are most receptive to learning and socializing in. It's a good thing and it. It helps not only the child but also the family on the other side of it like you said two years more of college is it's almost a requirement jr us to understand the world around you and it's types of opportunities you have now. Knowledge of and skills of workers in the labor supply is a key factor in business and economic growth. We know this. We know that better-trained higher skilled workers educated workers just drive productivity and they move up into higher paid positions the higher wages which actually opens up other opportunities for people who are just entering the workforce you know into those positions with lower barriers. There's really no downfall to having a better trained and a better educated workforce. I don't understand opposition to this other than i don't wanna tax my friends but what's best for america. What's best for america right now if you look at our competitors as well really look developed and developing countries and what. They're investing in invest in education. They invest in technology. It doesn't make sense to oppose these things. It's disappointing that they might be cut but battle goes on. I guess now there's a reason. There are two thousand plus chinese nationals studying at michigan state university a similar number at the university of michigan. Their nation is subsidizing them massively because of the value of the best education in the world for advancing a nation's economic agenda and we still have the best education available in the world especially at our research universities but also our community college system but we're unwilling to invest for ourselves in that and we're letting other river basically setting up a system that is benefiting other nations that are smarter than us about the the future of their economies. And it's another thing that's going to bite us in the but if we don't deal with it you know people don't like taxes. They don't like the idea of taxes they don't like the idea of spending but at the same time. Yeah you you spend on your home. You don't skimp on the roof just because you don't want to spend the money to to reroof it and you don't want to put up with the with the leaks. It's the same thing with our economy. You've got to invest in it. You've gotta save for the future to make for a better future but and we could write on all about this. We can one point. I'll make is you're spending anyway because if you're not investing as a community if you're not investing in the skills and education of your workforce you're leaving gaps out there that cost you money and i actually from my day job right about this all the time but the cybersecurity skills gap for example there are hundreds of thousands of cyber security jobs that have gone unfilled because the people just people just don't have the training or the knowledge to fill those roles now the private employers could take it upon themselves to pay for training. Who do you think is gonna pay for that. You know that's going to be passed on to us in costs and fees and other things it gets passed onto us because It in the form of like a data breach will because there aren't people there who understand security or who can keep up with it enough to be able to fight back against the threat actors who are constantly attacking and you know trying to extort money from people so you know there are externalities that come along with having it. Educated workforce to highly skilled workforce. I can't emphasize enough the benefits of training people to get them into these careers and it shouldn't be on the private employer is shouldn't be on the mom and dad entirely as a as a nation. We should invest in this and we could go on on us. We could read this exactly exactly well. Let's ran on something else Enhancing the republican legislature keeps passing bills. They know they will be vetoed and they ignore bills. That might actually get something done. And what are we talking about here. The issue at hand is a defector tax voucher system. This time allows people to receive tax credits for donations made to a scholarship fund. Which then would grant the scholarships to students for non public education. The blaine amendment of nineteen seventy prohibits public dollars from funding..

"That's going to create true chaos. We're going to see efforts to intimidate in almost clerks. The machine people intimidate in house public health officials. They're going to be people who decide. This is not worth going to do this anymore. It's not worth the hassle. It's not worth the doubts Endangered for my family when you multiply that by the fifteen hundred plus jurisdictions across michigan by thousands of other jurisdictions across the country. We're heading to a place where people who are truly objective. Who believe in the rule of law and doing their job which is trump administering an election of votes not getting their nose under the tent so they can gene the out another target for those who would intimidate us into the middle ages on things like masks in vaccines as well as our educational content local school boards reporter alison donahue from the michigan. Advanced has been following this trend and joins us now. Alison what are you finding. It is it. Is this a state wide thing with activists especially in the conservative side gearing up for school board elections. Yeah so there's been a couple county parties that have hosted these school board member training. Recruitment events We are seeing both sides. I was able to actually talk with jodie job with the oakland county. Democrats and she said that they're working on the defensive end here since over the summer. A couple conservative republican Couple republican county parties had already started hosting these events in kent county. Gop had an event in june. So yeah they. They're just starting to really get folks thinking about running for this floor. Just based after what we've seen the last last year year and a half with critical race theory and that's mandates. Kobe policies in schools are the cards. Finding that it's easy to get candidates. Recruited certainly look turn out elections. So it's a lot easier to win a school board election in theory that it is a something is really high visibility. We're gonna have a huge turnout. I actually talked to Salon over at the michigan cessation school boards and they had a hard time recruiting people Prior to the pandemic prior to all of this Coming out last year and a half and so might be interesting to see if these races have more candidates running for the school board offices. I think there's about the twelve hundred to fourteen hundred open seeds in november. Twenty twenty two So there there's a lot of opportunity for people to try and get in there. And i know that again the oakland county. Dem said that they they do have quite a bit of people were interested. I know the kent county. Gop they had sold out events so there are definitely a lot of people that are looking at scoreboards right now. Traditionally school boards of their. The meetings themselves have been pretty noncontroversial to are the school board meetings that are getting out of hand discouraging people from running and not entirely. Sure that it's discouraging. People i think on both ends people are getting more They're wanting to be more involved either to stop what they're seeing happening in the school board meetings right now or because they want their issues to be considered on billboards. They don't see those issues considered right now like With critical race theory or mass mandates that say apparent doesn't want their school the have a mass mandate they in the school district. Does they might be more compelled beyond that school district to have a say in. Whether they have a mask mandate or not. So i think it is inspiring a lot of folks to to really consider running into the stretch about this is. Nobody teaches critical race. Theory instead of michigan right yeah. It is not a k. through twelve curriculum at all. It's actually just a grad school program elective so it is not being taught arcade utah schools. The pulled it association of school boards has been endemic in texas for many many years. They've revised text books to really could have changed. History more to their suiting on the conservative side are there drives in michigan as an intent in michigan to follow the lead of texas and really inject more politics to the schoolbooks. I am not sure that there's a real national effort on that level. It from the angle of recruiting people for school boards really looking overtures. Definitely a national. Push their That that's definitely coming from the national level. I just don't know that it is actually a real problem here in michigan with critical racer. We don't teach it I think a lot of folks are getting like a diversity and inclusion equity plan confused with critical race theory But that they're very separate so i. I'm not entirely sure that. That is a real issue here in michigan mike. Some might think elson you so much for joining us on. The pali is something we need to keep our eyes open to visits in. We start turning our schools into political theaters. And we've got a real problem like yeah absolutely absolutely and that's what we've been seeing for last year and a half so and if people want to continue to follow your work how do they get a subscription to michigan advanced gotta michigan advanced dot com. We are a nonprofit news organization based in lansing You can sign up for our free daily newsletters But yeah we are working hard over here. So there's always.

Schools Become Crucial Battleground Heading Into Midterms

"You that parents getting involved in school board elections are now having a profound effect on statewide and federal elections. And people are starting to take notice of this. Cut 11. The massive increase in parents from in school board races local government has federal implications on school boards and how it will affect the 2022 midterms and new data coming out shows that things are not just bad for Democrat. Things are not just going in the wrong direction. Things are worse than they could have ever possibly imagined. Play cut 11. Meanwhile, suburban parents frustrated with COVID-19 restrictions and curriculum problems, they're going to be they are have become far more active in local politics and seem only further inspired by the Justice Department's decision to intervene in school board parent disputes. Now, tomorrow night, Republican Glenn youngkin, as you're seeing there, he's going to make a major announcement. He says he's going to highlight some of these issues with the federal government getting involved with schools, and we will be there tomorrow as he brings out a plan that he says will combat all of that. The question, though, remains will parent enthusiasm overall translate into voter turnout. If so, that could have major implications for how midterm campaigns will be run

"For the spring branch and in school district. A lot of things were revealed that would not have been known, including How come public employees unions? Are so invested in school board. Elections. That seems weird. It's almost as if the school board is another one of these public entities. That the unions have sunk their teeth into in the taxpayer had no clue. And that's where everything's going wrong. So I'm gonna youth baseball game a couple days ago, and the woman who recruited the candidate I supported Helped him with his policy research and And everything else. Said the name's Emily as Emily, You're gonna have to run next time and she said Oh, new new new new new. I said Oh, yes, yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! You've got to run and she said, no, I'm a behind the scenes person. And my point Woz and still is. If Mommy's Don't take back the schools, there will be no hope for our Children. It's not going to be easy. Like who could not want Mommy's to run our school? Well, The answer to that question is what is wrong with our schools? Anna Smith is a newly elected Texas school board member for the Dallas area. Carol Independent School District School Board, D. C. I S D She's one of two school board candidates in Texas that have been elected amid a raging battle over critical race theory. Prompting speculation about the issues political saliency nationwide. The Fox News article. Headline Anti Woke. Candidate wins Texas School board race, says voters rejecting media's false narrative on the race. Newly elected Texas school board member Hannah Smith says people showed up to the polls and record numbers. I love it, Hannah Yeah. Thank you so much for having me. You bet. Are you a mommy? I am on a proud mom of four dragons. Our mascot here in South Lake is a dragon for all of our schools, So I've got four of them from elementary school all the way up to high school. How young is the youngest He just turned seven on Saturday. He's in first grade a great age and your oldest My oldest is a freshman in high school. My oldest is a freshman high school and that's a lot. That's a whole different deal, but that's a lot of fun. Is he? How old is your oldest 15 or 14? Yeah. 15. As his mind, and we went and got his learner's permit a week and a half ago. And so that's a whole different show sitting in the passenger seat while he drives now he's actually good driver. I gotta give him credit. But what that's a That's a role reversal because I remember him sitting in the back seat and thus me taking him to preschool. It's a party, right? Yeah, the car seat? Yes. Asking that I replay the particular Billy Ocean or Bill Withers song again. Would you play it again? Would you play it again? And we just so Yeah. So I've got you in between one in fifth grade and one in seventh grade, so We're really happy to be involved in our schools and so excited for the future of our district. So you're the last person to ever run for school board, which is exactly why you should run for school board. How did that happen? You know, I'm an attorney, and I have practiced in the field of religious freedom Law for about 20 years and I was just really involved in our kids schools. And last August, something happened at a school board meeting that really Just took our community. They wanted to pass a cultural competence action plan that included all sorts of provisions that were against free speed against due process against teachers right to freedom of conscience. And so as an attorney, it is really troubled me. And so I said to myself, I've got to help our community navigate this. Are you doing? Some open records request showed up to board meetings to speak in public comments. And then after a few months, what do you know? You know, I was the candidate for the open seat on the school board, So that's kind of how it happened. So you have to have that conversation with your husband. And he says, Hannah, we have four kids. Hmm. Yeah, And he's used to me doing a lot of things like this. So it was a really short conversation because he knew there was no choice. He actually supported me wholeheartedly. He's like Hannah, you got to do this. We need you. The school board needs you. So So there's a woman named Emily Spare Andy. Oh, she's my friend Mike's, but Michael's spare and EOS wife in Houston, and she helped a guy get elected this election that just did that You were elected in down here in Houston. And I saw her. She's a mom of a kid who plays on the team of my best friend and I said this week, you've gotta run and just no, no, I'm behind the scenes, and I said, no, that's just it. You can't be behind this. We can't have the mommies behind the scenes anymore. It is time for the mommies to run for the school board and fix the schools because you people know what's going on better than the teachers or the administration period in the story. Exactly right? Yeah, That's exactly right. We didn't wear Mom's to step up. I mean, They're the ones who have the you know their finger on the pulse of what's going on in our schools. I mean, really last fall when we were doing all of this investigative work, it was the moms who are seeing what was happening with their kids, you know, and seeing it online in some cases when they're at home and quarantining and they're looking on their kid's computer and seeing what's happening in the classroom, and seeing some of the online resource is that their kids were assigned for homework and realizing this is not okay. S so our moms are the ones who really are on the front lines and we absolutely need them to step up for school board. Watch. Something happened this past year, Hannah and that Woz The schools. Closing when the mom's begged that they open and then it was the school's requiring masks despite the evidence that showed that they shouldn't and It and I saw the effects it was having on the Children, not just academic performance, but mental health issues, and I saw footage across the country of parents going in Mommy's pleading With school boards to reopen the school and take off the mask and the school board members in multiple cases thinking that they were muted or that they weren't seen laughing or Ignoring and I thought, you know this is a real wake up call as to what's happening, and we let this happen, and now it's incumbent on us to fix it. And I love that you're doing that. I love that you're doing that. I mean, I could not be happier. About your story and telling your story because we're going to have to tell a lot more of these. You're gonna have to become the norm that you're gonna have to become not the out liar that Fox News is writing about. But the norm, and this is what happens in our schools. Hannah, if you can hold with me for just a moment, I want to talk some more with you about your particular case and critical race theory. And.
