Doug Sits Down With Former Congressman Jason Lewis of Minnesota

"Us a little bit about your background and then what, you know, what staircase you fell down to say, I need to run for Congress, you know? Well, you do, I was in the airport the other day and somebody came up to me, and said, I know you, then you used to fill in for Russia and you were in Congress for a while and I said, yep, that's me and they said, whatever happened to you anyway. We all get those. Well, look, I grew up in a small business family. My mom was from north Minneapolis. My dad was from Iowa. We settled in the Hawkeye state, but Minnesota was the second home. So when I fell into talk radio after graduate school, I had an opportunity to go home to Minneapolis and St. Paul, I did. And that was in the early 90s and raised my two daughters here for 30 years. Loved it. Got into radio. It was fortunate enough to hit the timing was good, telling them for rush and had my own syndicated show for a while. But at some point, Doug, you know what it's like, you can be a commentator so long, but after a while, you got to put your money where your mouth is and you want to get on the field and play. Because the only way to really change things is to vote for them. So I thought, in most, by the way, most commentators won't talk most talk show hosts don't do that because they can demagogue your previous comments like Supreme Court Justices. And I knew that would happen with me and it did with CNN and all the rest. But I didn't really care. I just said, look, I want to do something. And I was fortunate to come into Congress with a new president when we really had an opportunity to do things and we did. But it was really just more of an angst about, look, you can talk all day long, but at some point, you know, suit up, get in the game. And so I did do that and served. I thought in one of the more consequential terms of Congress, and then I ran for the U.S. Senate alongside the president here in Minnesota, and two years ago and October, we were neck and neck with Tina Smith, who was the Democrat, I would say from Minnesota, but really she represents Planned Parenthood. Her former employer. But I felt that we were going to win Minnesota. I really felt the president went. And we did great. I collected more votes than any other statewide candidate in Minnesota history. We outperformed the top of the ticket by two points, but we had 1.9 million absentee ballots at 60% of the total Minnesota vote gained by mail.

I'm not going to say Dave, Steven a Smith is talking about Colin Kaepernick, for whatever reason a Dallas Cowboys probably lost the game. I didn't watch it. But because they're talking about it and they're floating around the idea of Colin Kaepernick playing for the cowboys, they must have lost the game and did not play well. Let me read, yeah, let me read the article. Dallas Cowboys have a major issue at quarterback moving forward as dak Prescott fractured his right thumb in Sunday Night's loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It says while the cowboys will likely go with Cooper rush as the starting quarterback in rear wheel Greer as his backup ESPN star Stephen a Smith floated the possibility of the team taking a fly on Colin Kaepernick. Smith said he didn't think it would even happen, but let's see broach the topic anyway.

"Larry, good to have you here. Chris say hello to the black face of white supremacy. As I was called by the LA time when I ran for governor by a columnist who the bank email was initials are Erica D Smith, oops. Yeah. Look, I know that what you're doing comes from a very good place. And I know that in part just because I know you, but also you've really over the years, pointed out the policy flaws that I think have left so many black Americans disenfranchised. This new movie, and by the way, I say this is actually a sequel to the uncle the original Uncle Tom that you wrote. But this is the second one. And you get into some of these things. People ought to know, there was a lot of success was there not within the African American community long before the war on poverty in the 1960s in my estimation really destroyed so much of it. Absolutely. And by the way, it's a collaborative effort. Both these films, the director is Justin Malone. He's absolutely brilliant. It was scored by an amazing composer, a named Damon Chris well and co written by the star chattel Jackson, a guy named rival writer Ansel and myself. So it's a collaborative effort. But you're absolutely right about the success of black America. The first one talks about post slavery. When you're talking about an environment with the Klan, lynchings, Jim Crow, still black people kept moving forward. Why? Basically four reasons. Reliance on family. Even during slavery, a black child was more likely to be born under a roof as biological mother and biological father than today. Reliance on American values. You look at speeches by people like Frederick Douglass and they're replete with references to patriotism and to American values, even though obviously America was not living up to those values when it came to black Americans.

Lee Smith Dissects President Biden's War Language

"Of the important things and you and I have discussed this before is to explain for us to learn and for us to explain where we are. So we don't make mistakes. So we don't blunder into something dangerous. And especially violent. So we don't make these terrible mistakes that destroy that have destroyed countries throughout recorded history. I think the speech is very important. As you say, and I was just thinking about it this morning. And what I thought was that those kinds of speeches are usually directed against foreign foreign adversaries, right? So people were very funny on social media. I mean, not incorrectly, I think, comparing him to all sorts of totalitarian leaders, including Hitler. And there was a, frankly, a lot of the a lot of the core emotions felt not entirely dissimilar. But look, this is what people would say about we're going to invade France. The French are monsters or this is what, you know, this is how the, what? It's just the way that we describe or leaders typically describe foreign countries, especially weak countries. But it's how they describe countries that they are at war with or are about to be imminently at war with Lee. Right, absolutely. Right. It's meant to, yeah, it's the humanizing language. It's extermination language. Extermination is language finally because and so far as it does inside violence, they're like, look, they're a big threat. We have to get rid of this threat. That's extermination.

Why They Actually Raided Mar-a-Lago With Lee Smith

"Walk us through from the statements made by cash Patel, the bright bought article that is cited as a piece of evidence in the affidavit. What Lee Smith thinks is the real reason for this state sanctioned burglary. Yeah, well, thanks. Thanks for reading it and recommending it. When it first happened, I mean, my assumption, my assumption was that it was just all about January 6th. It was a pretext to break into the home of the former president of the United States. And looked for and looked for whatever they could find. I mean, not evidence, but look for whatever garbage they could find to try to tie Donald Trump to the three and a half hour long protest that occasionally turned violent on January 6th, 2021. It was not an insurrection. This is preposterous propaganda coming from progressive faction. So I thought they were just going to look for something regarding January 6th and try to hang that on Donald Trump. As I started to look at the timeline though, as I started listening to some of our friends, some congressional investigators who had worked on the Russia probe or looking into the FBI's abuses and crimes, and their investigation of Donald Trump, they started to signal that it probably they don't know for sure, but that it probably had a lot to do with Russia. And as I started to look at it more and more, and as I started to put the timeline together, that's my conclusion too. I think that they broke into, or I think there's good evidence, circumstantial evidence, certainly, that the reason they broke into Donald Trump's home was to find if he still had, or if he had made copies of documents that he had previously declassified. So again, it would be entirely 100% legal for him to have these. But the important point is documents that implicated the FBI and others in the illegal surveillance of president Trump, his campaign and his administration.

Grappling With Our Current Situation With Lee Smith

"Thought of the best adjectives to help us grapple with the situation we're in? That's a really interesting question, and I'm very grateful for you asking it. I haven't nailed it down exactly. That maybe you and I speaking about it will be able to come to a closer definition. Basically what I think is this. We've heard people call whatever. Everyone from AOC to Barack Obama to Chuck Schumer or communists, right? And look, it has a feel like the Chinese Communist Party. But as the feel and there are totalitarian, the progressive movement is totalitarian in some ways. But to describe exactly what's going on here, the way that I'm thinking about it right now is that it's an oligarchy, right? We have rule by the few. They've secured power for themselves. It's a combination of political elites and corporate elites as well with a courtier class surrounding them, meaning the press. And what's interesting is it's given me reason to go back and think about what totalitarian regimes really are. Whether we're talking about the Chinese Communist Party, whether we're talking about the Soviet Union, whether we're talking about post Peloponnesian war, Athens, it's always ruled by a few and it depends those oligarchies if we're talking about Athens, those oligarchies had a particular kind of ideology, which would be entirely lost on us now. The kinds of ideologies that we recognize now if we're talking about communism, we know very much what that looks like. So it's important for us to figure out what the ideology is driving and shielding this regime, right?

Who Is Lee Smith?

"Who is Lee Smith and how did you arrive at where you are today? So give those who are unfamiliar with you a little bit of the backstory. Yeah, well, you know, I mean, what that book is about the strong horse. I was raised in New York. I was living in New York at the time of 9 11, and I wanted to know what had happened to my hometown. And so I moved first to Egypt, then I moved to Lebanon, spent some time in Israel. Jerusalem in particular, beautiful, wonderful city Jerusalem. And Beirut tragically has been a beautiful city in the past, but now it's now it's in deep trouble and very deep waters. And Cairo has many problems of its own, but also some great important interesting people. I think that one of the most important things I think that the stuff that we saw on 9 11, and I think for both of us, our study of the Middle East and our study of these of these very ugly regimes, it's sad, but helpful. And so far as I think we learn to by looking at these regimes, we learn to recognize problems as they've arisen here in the United States. Both with the Obama administration, then with the attacks on Donald Trump, the national security apparatus designed to protect American citizens, weaponized and turned against American citizens, Donald Trump, Donald Trump aides like yourself, like Michael Flynn, and as we see Peter Navarro, Steve Bannon, and of course Trump supporters. That's what we saw with Joe Biden's very peculiar and dark speech.

And you know, he just went on and on for a while and Chappelle applauded it too, and he called Chris Rock brave. No brave would have been hitting him back. I mean, it would have been stupid, but brave. Brave is to wait months before you say something that's not brave a bad word. You know, the slap was bad. I'm not for the slap. I mean, but come on, stop this. Okay, look, you got slapped. We get it. But how about what happened to Rihanna in the car with Chris Brown? She got the crap knocked out of her. Remember her face? "The other day changing subjects, Chris Rock. We haven't heard much from for a while since the whole smack with Will Smith Chris Rock made a crack about the 1994 murder of Nicole Brown Simpson during some comedy set and Phoenix last weekend. And he said something like, you know, the academy asked him to come back and host the Oscars and he was like, no, I wouldn't do that because it would be like asking the call to go back to the restaurant where she left her sunglasses before she and Ron Goldman were murdered by a mystery man with teeny tiny hands. They didn't find it funny. I think it's great Nicole brown's just a Tonya really got mad. You know, and that was a chance to really light into Chris and tell him how bad and how distasteful it was and she got a hold of TMZ and, you know, and she said, you know, this is his crack wasn't just on funny. Can I say, can I keep it real with y'all? Give me a show of hands if you want me to keep it real. Keep one on the steering wheel, but put the other hand up. Do you want me to keep it real or not? Let me keep it real for a minute. I read this article and I was trying to read a little bit of it, but it's so convoluted and minutia that I couldn't get to this young lady's point. Her name is Erica D Smith, same lady that called Larry elder of blackface and white supremacy, one of these brain dead people who think everything is about race. So she wrote this article by black ownership and she has this claim in this idea that the white Christians militias are whatever she want to call it, activists, nationalists, the white Christian nationalists are afraid of black people getting guns. Last time I checked, the Christian abolitionists were the ones who rescued the black people from slavery. Because Harriet Tubman wasn't doing it by herself. You could go back and look at the Juneteenth. June 19th and Galveston, Texas, Christian abolitionist, were informing black people that they were actually in fact free. And because you've been listening to me, you now know that black people weren't actually freed in because the Native Americans still had slaves. And then the following year, they finally got the Native Americans let go their slaves, the choctaw nation, and then black people were actually free. So I don't know why June 19th. June of 19 65, they should have go back to 1866 and then we'll have a conversation to be had. All right, outside of that, let me just make this really clear. I don't know where this racism talk comes from. I have spent my whole childhood around nothing but black people. I have spent my adulthood around majority white people after college, because when I was on a football team, I used to hang out with all the black players. After college, 2010 when I graduated from that point to now, I've spent majority of my time around most white people. White people ain't worried about black people. Like these leftists believe. I ain't never in my life. Heard even through the Grapevine.

The idea was the small electronic store would sell these things for a dollar. Make it impossible to actually get them and then best buy would have to price match? Go go out of business. That's actually really hilarious. Whole show is hilarious and that's the whole premise come up with all these crazy ideas help these businesses. And it's not really serious, but he presents it as completely serious. So yeah, it's worth checking out. That's funny. What's it called again,.

"Know I think that way sometimes. If I'm doing a job and getting tired I think to myself Hey, if I run faster. Get to my destination faster and then I can stop. Yeah. Let's get better. He's is faster and you'll be done with it sooner. So you've done a lie running to or is it the climbing that gave you the endurance probably running I haven't ran I've only ran like I dunno, not that much lately. Is, injury but when I do Ryan I think the first time I ran after lake not running for like four months I. I think I did like four miles. So I was like I was like, yes, still got it. To, definitely the running. Climbing is more for me. It takes more strings which. String. That's really hard. Do you have a history of competing and running though like in school and stuff? Yeah. I did like cross country and track and stuff like that did soccer for a little bit. cheerleading. All the athleticism? Athletic yeah, narrowly just play video games all the time and just have. Less. Bursts bursts show. You were a much different person much different interest are you did play somebody games as a kid? I was playing video games like drought all that is also doing a lot of other things but when your kid you sleep like three hours a day and you're like, yeah, full of energy now, it's like six hours like. Yeah I'M GONNA need a NAP right about like three PM. Maybe a coffee at eleven am and Y-. Now with software engineering and coding and other tech stuff also something you did it a young age. been like. Computer stuff. Leaks, websites, and. Building, my own stuff and whatever. Did you make a Geo city's website did not make it to your city's website now. About my space. I did my space. I had the dope EST mice basically out ever or overlay sorry overlays that it was making. Did you have the like the emo auto play music and all that I do think I had auto clan music always probably be music I was are definitely wasn't enough kid I think. I never jumped on the mice bandwagon. That's good. You Save yourself a lot of. Wasted time. A lot of people were enthusiastic about the customization. Yeah and you actually did use legitimate web development skill in order to do that right.

"Engineering stuff. Yeah. If for different place though. Yeah I think I'm done with Software Engineering I. Kinda like it work more than engineering where justice fixing stuff and tinkering. That's fun. Yeah building networks and things like that. Yeah. Baby I'm just lazy. You want to be one of those people who sits in a basement just chills all day and waits for those phone calls. No. Okay. We've not that. Lazy. You. Ever see the IT crowd I have not I. Don't watch television much. It's a British comedy from around fifteen years ago. It's about to it guys doing their thing. You. Would even doing lately, you'll never guess I started a podcast. Shit That's I never would have guessed. Just. Kidding. How many have you done so far? Are you just starting out or like bestowing my second one? Okay. I am just starting out. Nice. Do you an intention of which direction you WanNa go I'm kind of winging it for the most part. I'm talking to people. And whatever happens happens you know. That's that's the way to do it. That's Kinda high life just like. As a wise millennial one said yellow. I know there's things I should be doing, but I'm more fun to do things you want to do right So I. Know I should go back to getting a job and things like that. But my last two years off, I've experienced a lot and learned a lot and this is one of these new things where. I want to experience and learn. I think there actually is a lot of value to talking to people. And as a society. A lot of times we're only interested in talking to the most successful or well known people and in their footsteps. But there's also a lot of value to talk to people. You don't know because everybody has a story and I know we may feel insignificant compared to the giants of the world. But I, don't really believe that anyone is insignificant. I don't think anyone's insignificance not like. Caste system or anything like that. Yeah and that's a big inspiration for doing this because I know most podcasts all try to do is get the most high profile guest possible and here I am I'm like, Hey I'll talk to anybody but also I can't really get the most profile guests anyway. But I wonder if I had the option to do that would I do that? And that kind of goes against the integrity of what I'm doing. Right. You talked to high profile people if you ever got the opportunity but don't acknowledge their..

I'm not getting anywhere near this conversation. The mask is racist. Because people out there want you to believe that if a black person is wearing a mask, therefore they're doing something untoward. That's the racism. No, thank you. I don't want any part of it. Absolute madness. Everybody is wearing masks. Now. How do I feel about people wearing masks? Well, if you're sick, I have no problem. If you're wearing a mask should healthy people were masts. Of course not. Absolutely positively. Not if you want to argue that a phase covering means that we can tell exactly who you are. I agree, but I feel the same way about the burka. You should not be allowed to wear a burka for a driver's license. If the objective is to be able to see your face to identify you.
