"Tell us a little bit about how much things have changed. It's been quite a journey. Free has been a journey for all of us but Alan on this wild ride. That wasn't just an internet business journey. It was a personal transformation. Johnny to i'll. I'll get to that in a minute but from an internet marketing perspective. Yeah things have changed a lot. I remember using web position. Gold and thinking. Wow this is really having to make a separate version for every one of these search engines of the same content just feels really nikki to me and and wasteful and stupid and. I just did not like doing that. And didn't do much of it because they hated it so much and thankfully that was something that just got became irrelevant when google came along when Actually when backrub came line which became google. Can you believe that was the name of of kids to their dorm room looking to name things. Funny thing names you know so. I just fell in love with google and wanted to figure out how to reverse engineer it and at the time we were building ecommerce websites as the primary business but baking. Seo into those websites became a fiction of ours and and for me in particular and then i realized that there are a lot of other kinds of websites out there and bigger businesses who would never hire a small agency to build an ecommerce site for them. Because maybe it's a huge brand like target dot com or something so we wanted to offer audits and standalone seo consultancy services beyond just making it into an ecommerce website build and That was back in two thousand or so two thousand two thousand and one and We've been cash. it's been It's been a long road and there've been a lot of google updates and it's not about chasing after the latest update. It's like driving a car using only the rear view mirror. If that's the case and my thet ford to the future of future proofing year Your business and Online business your website and so that would involve things like a and Scalable strategies things of course need to be pearly white hat not just pretty white hat and is to be you know super super white and stuff that you're comfortable sharing with google engineers and saying here's what i'm doing if there's anything you're at all not comfortable with you should reevaluate something. You are happy to to show off to google engineer or Be happy for your competitor. Discover when they're reverse engineering what you're up to in terms of seo than yeah you should reevaluate it. You've said you've mentioned reverse engineering a lot in the first couple minutes of this help take part of reverse of your career has reverse engineering big. Sounds like it's a big. Yeah so i figured out at pretty early stage in in my business career that i could not just reverse engineer google's algorithm but kind of Put a middleware layer between my clients website and the greater internet and thus i could Kind of search and replace real time things that were not search engine optimized on the core website but i would like to search engine optimize it and serve it up to and needed a proxy kind of middleware layer in order to do that. Because if i were to do that on the Let's say blue martini. If you remember that platform install it would take many minds. And maybe a million dollars to implement the changes that i wanted to see on the live site and so i invented a proxy reverse proxy technology Back in two thousand and three called gravity stream and that actually became the majority revenue producing component or part of the agency and a. It was a big reason why i was able to sell the agency in two thousand and ten because that was Like majority of the revenue was performance based pricing. We had client for example. zappa's We charge seven figures in Pay for performance Spend in a year's time because we were generating that much value for them. We charged on a cost per click basis. Fifteen cents a click so everybody wanted to sign up because folks who doesn't want pay for performance if you don't get the performance you don't get the value you don't pay for it so we bring that back down to kind of our core audience which is really people that are just learning about see. Oh just trying to understand how to get better at seo. What can they do at their level. What kind of things would make sense for them to try to reverse engineer without these big multi million dollar tools. Is there something they can do as as new people to really help them totally leverage yeah totally just off the cuff. Some examples here just doing a simple. Google search can help you to reverse engineer. Let's say what buzzfeed is doing in order to get so many links and and so much Click through nee click throughs. It's the the hook and the headline. That's kind of their secret sauce. They have the pick really good Images and they write the articles. Well and you know come up with great quizzes and all that as well but really it starts with the hook and then the headline and if you want to reverse engineer what they're doing as inspiration to raise your own viral content link worthy of viral content. So that you can get like they get. You might put in your topic. Plus site colin buzzfeed dot com in as a google search. And see what comes up as The articles and and the headlines if you want to get a little fancier with it you could do in title colon and then the topic. There's no space after the coal by the way so entitled colon plumbing for example if you're plumber and then site colon buzzfeed dot com. It's so simple. And yet you're aren being essentially ripping off in duplicating But i like. I said with using it as inspiration not copy and paste so. Let's actually do that. Site colon buzzfeed dot com and then in title colon plumbing or vice versa. Doesn't matter the order can do entitled i or cyclone i seven expert plumbing tips to keep in mind. This thanksgiving The race is on for plumbing at the push of a button. What was thanksgiving interesting. Yeah i was going to blow in me to wait a minute plumbing. I'm worried about his thanksgiving is the aftermath. But that's besides okay so anyways you you get the idea that you can find what for whatever topic it is. Unless it's super super nisha. Could let's say you want to write about hurricanes entitled colin hurricane or entitled colin hurricanes and then say cohen buzzfeed dot com buzzfeed dot com. I is my favorite kind of goto a place to reverse engineer. What they're doing in terms of their their hooks and headlines but there's also viral nova distract defy board panda up worthy a lot of these viral sites that get tons and tons of traffic and you just are looking for

World in much better place to fight desert locust scourge UNs FAO

"It's been described as a biological time bomb the worst upsurge in decades this time last year. Swans of desert locusts started to spread across countries in the horn of africa devastating crops and people's livelihoods. Fa yours emergency campaign appealed for urgent action to avoid a looming locust plague and humanitarian crisis. Now one year on. I'll we winning the fight. I put that question to senior locust. Forecasting officer keith pressman case when we spoke a year ago or it was just as the desert locust swarms with starting to invade the horn of africa. Could you briefly sum up the events of the last you well. A lot has happened in the past year. The last time we spoke a year ago swarms or just invading kenya in the horn of africa. They're spreading through other countries in the region. And since that time now there has been several generations a breeding. So what that means is that the locust numbers had just increased further and this is mainly due to exceptionally good weather. Conditions for the locus. The the problem did not remain only in the horn of africa but last summer there is a very important threat to west africa. Fortunately that did not occur but there was an additional extension of the current upsurge in southwest asia so in countries like iran pakistan and india. Fortunately the end of the summer. I very intensive efforts of those countries. The app surge was brought under control there but it still remains in the greater horn of africa. So that means them. Kenya's mali ethiopia dan and yemen. And that's that's what we're facing now again this year. And it's very interesting because you know when we last spoke a year ago. I mentioned swarms invading kenya. Well that's what they're doing again now and they started invading kenya from the north from eastern ethiopia from central somalia. I'm just before christmas and this was predicted so similarly to what happened last year again is not a surprise. We were expecting this and are we in a better position now. Are we better place to fight the desert lucasville. Much much better. You know last year at this time. We're in a very very precarious situation. We had you know. Huge numbers of locust swarms had developed and were moving in invading countries. That had not seen logos for seventy years. You know such as kenya other countries. That was a worse situation and more than a quarter of a century. They just simply were not prepared to respond to such a large scale invasion. They weren't trained. They had no resources. I'm no vehicles no spray equipment. No pesticides no aircraft. You know no logisticians. You know all of the elements components that you need in order to invoke control campaign so we were really. Let's say trying to catch up very quickly. We had no funding you know. Let's say desperate collectively desperate. I should say and the country's nfl. We're obviously we're scrambling doing the best. We could have that time but it was not enough we had to really really upscale and that's what's been achieved so now here we are in january twenty twenty one. It means we have everything in place. Yes we do have shortages of funding to keep those operations going in. This is extremely critical. But at least we're not at the stage of having to look for aircraft or having having to order equipment from abroad and wait for it to be delivered. All of the countries have those Elements in place. The faa ledge. Emergency response has seen incredible. International support including the mobilization of funds to tackle the small towns and prevent a humanitarian crisis always succeeding in the fight against desert. Lucas that show. We are succeeding. Yes if we had not been what we've been doing for the past year we would have seen a play by now. You know swarms from west africa to india from the equator to the mediterranean. We don't see that so. I think that that's confirmation that we are succeeding. We have probably less locust swarms than we did a year ago. A doesn't mean that you know we can sit back and relax but you know. There's a lot of work to do but i think the response as you mentioned from the international community has been exceptionally good globally. A more than two point. Eight million hectares retreated and twenty twenty. And that's an extraordinary achievement. These efforts of course they've saved enormous amounts of crop production an estimated two point seven million tons of crops or save last year. That's enough you know to feed eighteen million people for an entire year. The cost of that That was saved is something around eight hundred million dollars and you put that into balance with you. Know what did it costs to save that production we received last year. One hundred and ninety four million dollars so with that investment were able to save you know eight hundred million dollars or the food in additional able to to protect and safeguard one point two million households their livelihood. It's so you know our desert. Locusts extremely devastating. Obviously the response in the pasture has been exceptionally good. And of course you have to remember. We're competing against other emergencies. Such as covid nineteen indeed twenty twenty was a particularly challenging year. What can we expect for the will. The current upsurge continuing the problem. Is that the weather. Continues to favor the locus and you know. In the past locus upsurges lukas plagues they collapse because of two factors on because of the human intervention. You know the control operations everything that. We're trying to do to reduce locus numbers and a failure in the weather at and so far we're saying the former i'm we see those upskilled control operations working very well. I mean more than twenty one aircraft or an operation in eastern africa. But we haven't seen the break in the weather. We had again an extraordinary event last month in the horn of africa. Right exactly where the locust were we had a cyclone in december. Cyclones don't occur in the horn of africa december. But this is the second year in a row where we've had that so until we see you know kind of a break in the weather. And what does that mean. It means a failure of seasonal rains essentially or very unusually cold temperatures or strange wins that might carry all the locus into the ocean and where they would paris but until we see that we still have the challenge to to manage. This locus upsurge and try to to reduce impacts on food security and people's livelihood so for this year twenty twenty one and basically from now until summertime. We need eighty million dollars and the majority of this would be spent on maintaining those essential control operations by air and by ground as well as protecting the livelihoods. That was cave craftsman. Faa's seniors locust forrcasting.

"Hundreds of miles away and then sinks. So your blows out the top of all the thunderstorms that organized and make the hurricane when it sinks hundreds of miles away, and whenever Here sinks, it compresses and warms. And so you get this incredible heat dome to develop around the northern flank of the storms, and we're in such a heat dome that was here to begin with, but it may be intensified. By the presence of a hurricane down in the Gulf of Mexico. It. It looks now like that thing will come ashore, perhaps in northeast Texas and then moved north to the Ohio Valley and that curve eastward. That's where the mid Atlantic I could bring some pretty good rains to the Southern Midwest. We could sure use some of that here were many parts of our area's very are very drowning. I was intrigued by watching the track of the Two storms at the same time moving parallel. Into the Coast area. What? I've never seen anything like that. No, You know, what we've got might happen was of an effect known as the Fujiwara effect, and that's what happens when you bring two of these. Tropical cyclones or tropical storms, hurricanes within, say, 850 miles to one another. When that happens if you can get two of them of equal strength simultaneously to be that close together, they start rotating around each other. Now when you get to storms close, and it has happened before, it's not in every year occurrence. But this kind of things that noted with typhoons out in the Pacific and everything else. If you get a very strong storm within 100 miles of a weaker storm, that what happens is the weaker storm tends to die out. And, uh, never did the storms combined. But it is interesting the effect they have on one another. Once they do develop and they move you know, within roughly 850 miles of one. Another is when the effect starts, big noted, and the Fujiwara effect is named after Japanese researcher who back in 1921 was doing some research on board a season in water and he noticed and you know the atmosphere is like it's a flew into it. It's not as dancers water, but the Circulations with it at the Eddies respond very much like they do in a bowl of water or a piano water, And he found that when the city's got close to one another, they tended to rotate around them. But you're right. It's not in every year occurrence. It's pretty rare, have two of those storms ever touched down simultaneously. Or you know what? What doesn't happen, John and they don't get together. They don't merge into well, OK, right so that they'll stay independent of one another. But what happens the physics of the storms of such that they can't combine. Right, but they can influence other one's kind of nearby and so they can. They can affect the way each of the system's moves. Um and also their intensity. If there's a Disparity to begin with one longer than the it's Tuesday with time, and that means Tom Skilling, and it's sponsored by permits your basement systems and we'll be back on 7 20 w G. "With, um, because it's Thursday's generally herewith Tuesdays and Tuesdays with time. Yeah, you know the rest of story. Okay, So we were talking about this tropical storm that got named. That's that's coming toward the East Coast of the United States had a little bit of a rocky run here, but there was some concern that was going to start to form and you never know. This time of year's we head into August because the waters of super warm down there that the things can can blow up more quickly than we anticipated. Well, you know it, and that's been the trend with the practical cyclones, Hurricanes typhoons. They have been developing more quickly because the ocean temperatures were warmer and also there is a slow down. Studies have shown there's been a slowdown in the tropical systems. So you get these phenomenal amounts of rain like Harvey's. It hit Houston a couple of years ago, Never in the history of landfalling. US Lower 48 hurricanes. There've been a couple of rain. They got 60 and there's a rain out of that single storm that was followed by another system. The wind is North Carolina with 36 inches of rain just a year later. And then he had Michael that went into the Florida Panhandle. That thing exploded from a little tropical depression, toe a hurricane, and I can't respectable Cat order hurricane the worst It's ever get the Lord of panic inside of just hours. So it really is. They watched these things very, very closely because you've got Huge populations that can the evacuation. Time's are extraordinary takes you days to get people away from the coastline in these places. So they have a storm developed suddenly and have models. That if there's a shortcoming to them is that they don't intensify these things properly. Uh, And there's a lot of work being done on that to improve the model forecast of intensity. Yeah. Now let me ask you this because we're at nine. Named storms already, and that is why, as of today as of July 30th in this most recent one in science I that's spelled with a nine with the eye Storm. Yeah, is moving. As we just pointed out across Espanola and the mountains. There have a tendency to cut things down because you know that's that's Haiti and Dominican Republic. But it is you know, south of.

"Christmas day and as a young child thinking about would Santa get to those kids, and what would happen made a big impression. So when I was thinking about my doctoral thesis. That's when I came back to tropical cyclones let's talk a little bit about that, because you're one of the leading experts in the world on tropical cyclones, which is the broader class of terminology terminology that we use for hurricanes typhoons, and cyclones tells a little bit about what your expertise over the years has been and tropical cyclones and some of the contributions that you've made. Well, a couple of things I've done that I think differentiate me are I had a doctoral student come from the media Marcus shod, and he came because bemusing were really impacted by these systems. We call sub tropical cyclones for the Muda. They looked exactly like a tropical cyclone that to the National Hurricane Center, they didn't quite meet the definition. And so they weren't naming them turn that later because I think that's a great point before you kind of continue on what your story, can you tell the listeners what a sub sub tropical cyclone is because I bet they've heard them in recent you know, we've had a couple in recent years. So sub tropical cyclone isn't a strong the surface as it is a little above the ground tropical cyclones strongest right at the ground, and it's also not quite as symmetric and the maximum winds are a bit further from the center, it's a bit different win structure. And so. Mark came to do his PHD to try and understand subtropical cyclones, and whether it made sense for them to be brought to the attention of the Hurricane Center Rulli because the National Hurricane Center really helps coordinate with the weather services in the Carribean. Right. And so that's you've done some work. And I know we've cited some of your work in some recent research we've.

"Cyclones are set to receive the second half kickoff today. Back to receive standing two yards in Washington stated zone the crowd filing back in after an active halftime ceremony just concluded moments ago. And for Washington state. Jack, crane left-footed kicker. The football sense it towards the end zone Longo from his own one will return it out their side with a grace and a setter step brought out of the twenty seven as we check in with Alex cordray who ROY talked with coach Campbell. He said, hey, we might have lost you players on defense that were adjusted for targeting calls, but we've lived this all season long and that's adversity. This will be a great test for our team in the second half. And he wants to see some other players on defense step up on the other side. He was impressed with birdies moxie. He said he liked the way he responded late in the second quarter. He feels like his offense isn't a rhythm. But they just have to stop shooting themselves in the party taking over for zap Nolan after one series against Oklahoma state back on October six. The cyclones went seven one after he was essentially inserted into the lineup from right to left goes cyclones band. David Montgomery over right? Tackle powers his way across the forty ahead of the forty one a gain of thirteen yards on. I was stayed offense. I think one of the reasons to be confident you'd have to really strong playmakers. One of them's David Montgomery. He's just a spectacular player. They're hurrying up here birdie farside first reception by that you six four hundred eleven powder, then a fifth year senior who started his career at temple hill gain ten yards and move the change once again and the other spectacular player. Roy, of course, Hickey Butler the wide out with a hundred twenty four yards receiving in the first half. And you gotta get more people involved. Good to see eaten with the reception cyclones and plus territory on the far hash of the forty eight yard line party looks towards the sidelines. The now will change the Blake. Call. Trading in the shotgun. Gumri planks into the lap of the to by one formation. The shotgun snap. Fires at date. Butlers. Open makes the catch with the twenty yard line four south there in Iowa State three consecutive blaze all picking up Chuck yardage. That's again twenty eight. Well, they brought the corner. I thought they were double teaming Akeem Butler, but the corner came from the boundary on a blitz and laugh Schuyler Thomas the safety over the top on team Butler, and that's a match up steadily at Iowa state's favor. And off to the Gumri back to the line of scrimmage. Brought down hard there. The twenty yard line Aguayo making his first tackle the evening. It'll be second down in ten cyclones trailing twenty one ten and going back to the big game two Butler. It was brought Purdy who recognize the corner blitz and knew we had to get the ball to his white out as soon as possible. Butler now six receptions over a hundred and fifty yards more than twenty five yards per catching leads the country in that category. And a time out call by the coops. Facing a second down and ten time out on the field as we step aside. Thirteen.

"All spinning in parts of that at basin tropical depression a w later becoming tropical storm sunk oh it's not unheard of to see multipple tropical cyclones at the same time but this is pretty darn impressive on any scale it has happened before eight tropical cyclones hasn't occurred sinced 1974 according to colorado state university the pacific is a hotbed for multiple tropical cyclones this time of year of course given the expansive news of the pacific on average thirty six trump acl cyclones each year forum in the northwestern pacific and south western pacific basins combined and other sixteen or seventeen form each year in the central and eastern north pacific basin the budget already of those systems observed over the weekend saturday we'll never affect land directly the exception would be rocchi which did bring some heavy rain to southeastern china and sunke which could soak china's hainan island but you look at the the satellite imagery pretty wild dec eight different storms all being mapped out across the pacific alba that i care around the country as always tollfree.
