"Was frankly ironic but it presents a cautionary tale for future government led efforts at countering disinformation We had no operational authority right So if female or CBP or the cyber and infrastructure security agency came to us and said hey you know we're trying to reach this population to make sure that they have access to good information about critical infrastructure There's been a disinformation campaign about gas pipelines We would talk through with them okay Like how do we want to reach this What's the best messaging And they would be free to do with that information what they chose Let's say the DHS became aware that there was a bogus story going viral about the integrity of the upcoming midterms As director of this board what would you have done This is actually something that DHS has dealt with before In the 2020 election DHS along with the FBI and other parts of the federal government did uncover an Iranian campaign to dissuade voters from going to the polls And they very quickly declassified that intelligence and at a press conference with the director of the FBI putting out fun social media graphics and things like that in order to inform voters as the director of the board I would have consulted with the heads of sza and anybody else involved a cyber infrastructure security agency I would have potentially connected them with folks either within the department who had done similar education campaigns before or outside of the department who were experts on how to communicate about election security There was nothing to do with fact checking or anything like that It would just be about how best to get the message out so that Americans had the right information about how and when to vote if that's what we were talking about A lot of what you're describing and you even kind of alluded to this is the sorts of strategies that the intelligence community is already doing to some extent But the name the disinformation governance board I don't think was the best name first of all Second of all there is a strong amount of skepticism that Americans of all political creeds have about government censorship And Fox News I think did a good job of exploiting this and spinning the disinformation governance board as a ministry of truth Men with guns telling you to shut up A group of vicious people are taking Orwell not as a warning but as a handbook Is this what we really want to turn our country into this creepy government ministry of truth People were saying including members of Congress that this was stalinist or Maoist that it was going to knock on people's doors using the department's law enforcement capacity and there was a disinformation campaign to paint me as this absolute radical So an anonymous account online watched an old conversation I have had with some librarians in Georgia in January of 2021 It was presented completely without a date they cut one minute of the conversation in which I was describing Twitter's birdwatch program It is a program inviting Twitter users to add context to conversations on Twitter So that people can have more information when something is going on that might be politicized or might be lacking information for them to make a judgment call And when I was doing this conversation that was later posted on YouTube I was asked about the program I had literally just been announced I had admitted at the beginning of my answer that I didn't know too much about it And in the course of my about 5 minute answer to a librarian's question about what I thought about this program I said you know jury's still out It's kind of inviting people to edit the context of other people's tweets and that's what went viral So verified people can essentially start to edit Twitter It was presented as Nina and the disinformation governance board wants to edit your tweets This was picked up by conservative media and then to my chagrin and frankly discussed a lot of mainstream media reporters were also retweeting this video and saying wow this is totally crazy How could she say something like this As if I had said it in a meeting of the disinformation governance board which never even met And it went totally viral to the point where Bill Maher talked about it on his show The Tsar and Nina jankowicz says she'd like some committee there within this governing board with the power to quote edit Twitter and add context it was just really shocking to me even when the AP ran a fact check of that claim it got very little play later after I resigned my position I ended up tweeting that fact check article and kind of explaining things And people who engaged with that thread didn't even read the article and they said we know you still want to edit our tweets That is just one small part Of the campaign that was launched against me And that came with a lot of violent threats against me and my family of gender and harassment It is thankfully died down now but it was not an easy month How did the Department of Homeland Security respond to all of it The strategy was that we weren't going to give credibility to these claims by debunking them We were just going to issue some broad based talking points about what the board was going to do I've seen these sort of campaigns undermine the work of other counter disinformation initiatives in other countries I've written about that I have warned about that Unfortunately that's what ended up happening to us in a much greater scale You literally wrote a book called how to be a woman online surviving abuse and harassment and how to fight back Yes And yet it sounds like you had no opportunity to fight back I had no opportunity to fight back and actually my first book is called how to lose the information war So both books were borne out in real life in a very personal way It was kind of like watching a slow motion car crash And one of the things I talk about in my second book how important and empowering it is for women who are being abused to not see their online space to use the platforms that they have to call out the behavior being used to undermine them And I wasn't able to do that And now that I'm out of government it doesn't matter what I say I can issue as many fact checks as I want There are still people who claim to want me dead and other people who think I'm treasonous or are traitor to our country for having wanted to serve the federal government in an area in which I'm expert It's not just people online random Americans who made that happen It is members of Congress It is members of the media Some mainstream media figures as well who fell into that narrative without really doing their research It makes me pretty pessimistic about.

"It presents a cautionary tale for future government led efforts at countering disinformation. We had no operational authority, right? So if female or CBP or the cyber and infrastructure security agency came to us and said, hey, you know, we're trying to reach this population to make sure that they have access to good information about critical infrastructure. There's been a disinformation campaign about gas pipelines. We would talk through with them, okay? Like how do we want to reach this? What's the best messaging? And they would be free to do with that information what they chose. Let's say the DHS became aware that there was a bogus story going viral about the integrity of the upcoming midterms. As director of this board, what would you have done? This is actually something that DHS has dealt with before. In the 2020 election, DHS along with the FBI and other parts of the federal government did uncover an Iranian campaign to dissuade voters from going to the polls. A lot of what you're describing and you even kind of alluded to this is the sorts of strategies that the intelligence community is already doing to some extent. But the name, the disinformation governance board. I don't think was the best name first of all. Second of all, there is a strong amount of skepticism that Americans of all political creeds have about government censorship. And Fox News, I think, did a good job of exploiting this and spinning the disinformation governance board as a ministry of truth. Men with guns telling you to shut up. A group of vicious people are taking Orwell, not as a warning, but as a handbook. Is this what we really want to turn our country into, this creepy government ministry of truth. People were saying, including members of Congress that this was stalinist or Maoist, that it was going to knock on people's doors using the department's law enforcement capacity and there was a disinformation campaign to paint me as this absolute radical. Some mainstream media figures as well who fell into that narrative without really doing their research. This childishness has been put ahead of something that has an impact.

"Can you explain the history here. Absolutely good to be with you and juan. Thank you for having me again So this is pure insanity and we have seen five years of congressional reports policy reports And bipartisan agreement. That we need to make as many of our own pharmaceuticals as possible We know from data from reporting that the drugs that are made overseas can be full of carcinogens and toxic impurities. There's all kinds of data fraud and other quality questions that the plants overseas are riddled with including via his own implants which are operating in india under official action indicated. Warning from the fda. So why in the middle of a pan-demic are we going through this exercise. That every single report has told us. is absolutely counter indicated to public health and our national interest It seems that there is a collision here of a politics and corporate greed. We've seen a massive pay-outs to the via trish executives in the course of this merger including as you noted over thirty million to joe mansions daughter. Heather brush who is the former. Ceo of the company that merged with upjohn and mansion has become this pivotal figure a called by some the most powerful men in washington dc. And the only thing that is standing between this whisker thin senate majority for the democratics. For the democrats and a senator mcconnell taking up the gavel again so there is this sort of cone of silence that come down over this You know shuttering of this critical manufacturing plant in west virginia. It seems like it is both pharmaceutical and national security suicide to close this plant and a catholic. Could you talk about a mansions daughters history. There had the brush of with the company and in previous scandals controversy. She's been involved with. Yeah well what's really remarkable about the executive team that ran mylan over the last decade. Is that their compensation has just gone up. And up there was one year in which Heather brushes payout was twenty five million dollars in two thousand fourteen. Pay has gone up and up even wall. There has been this steady drumbeat of scandals as well as regulatory run-ins ins with the fda. So you know her. Tenure at mylan began with this scandal in which it turned out that she had been given awarded an mba from west virginia university on the basis of doctored transcripts. When she didn't do the coursework that mba had to be revoked. It was awarded. Right after mentioned became governor. He was before senator Than there was as you noted the scandal around the epi pen pricing in which the price was jacked up four hundred percent underbrush his management. It was handled disastrously she Sort of pulled them marie antoinette on national television saying nobody is more upset about this than i am But everybody rightly noted that compensation has just skyrocketed as a mylan ceo. Then once the morgantown plant got into regulatory trouble with the fda based on The kinds of data manipulation that some of the executive team had been notably involved in in their previous employment. They looked to wind down. The morgantown plant you know but the but the people who are really gonna suffer here are american consumers. We need safe medication. Affordable medication and medication made within inspection distance of fda headquarters. That's what the morgantown plan offered for. I think something like five decades this then. This is then myelin. Ceo heather gresh daughter of senator joe mansion then head of the lobbying group that generic pharmaceutical association blamed the price hike on a broken healthcare system during a disastrous interview with. Cnbc's brian sullivan. Surely you must understand the outrage. As somebody i talked to last night said people are outraged because it seems outrageous that the american medical association has said this is basically the same product. It was in two thousand nine and yet the price has gone up. Three or four hundred. Fold so look. No one's more frustrated than me. I've been mature as as how can you be frustrated. That's then milen ceo. Heather brash. Who went on to lie to a congressional committee when she said the prophet off the two pack of epipens one hundred dollars when it was actually one hundred sixty six about sixty percent higher. That's because brush cited a prophet figure that included a thirty seven point five percent tax rate on the epi pen even though my paid a tax rate of just seven percent ear. An analyst told the wall street journal that one hundred reported profit figure has nothing to do with reality. But i wanted to ask you catherine. E ben about this tennessee plant because this is where joe biden ways and when you talk about president joe some people in washington. Thank you mean. Joe mansion because of his power there. What happened in tennessee. And what could be. Biden's do here and then we'll talk to the union leader about whether he's spoken to mansion. Where is he on this but katherine begin so there was a really interesting hail. Mary rescue of an antibiotic plant in tennessee It was purchased. It was essentially about to be mothballed. "Page for him to get. So there was a really interesting Hail Mary Rescue of an antibiotic plant in Tennessee. It was purchased, it was essentially about to be mothballed. It was purchased for a Dollar by a UK company who sent a guy named David Argyle to the Tennessee antibiotics want to say, hey is this plan viable? What did we buy? He got there, he saw this, incredible Esprit de corps among the workers and among the management job. You know, they had a critical Mission which was making antibiotics amoxicillin for the US market. The Biden administration could designate the plan as critical infrastructure which would stop its equipment and its intellectual property from going overseas. They could come in and rescue it under the defense production act and get government involvement in the plan in order to save it. You know? But the question is why in the middle of a pandemic when it has been clearly revealed that there has been supply chain crisis after supply chain crisis would the Biden administration let this plan slip through America's fingers right now? "This? But Catherine began. So there was a really interesting Hail Mary rescue of an antibiotic plant in Tennessee. It was purchased. It was essentially about to be mothballed. It was purchased for a dollar by a UK company who sent a guy named David argyle to the Tennessee antibiotics plant to say hey is this plan viable? What did we buy? He got there. He saw this incredible Esprit de corps among the workers and among the management. You know they had a critical mission which was making antibiotics amoxicillin for the U.S. market. So argyle got creative. And he's Australian. What he did he placed the plant into a chapter 11 bankruptcy. "Are riddled with including Beatrice's own plants which are operating in India under an official action indicated warning from the FDA. So why in the middle of a pandemic are we. Going through this exercise that every single report has told us is absolutely counter indicated to public health and our national interest. It seems that there is a collision here of politics and corporate greed. We've seen a massive payout to the via tris executives in the course of this merger including as you noted over 30 million to Joe Manchin's daughter Heather brush who is the former CEO of myelin the company that merged with Upjohn and Manchin has become this pivotal figure. Called by some of the most powerful men in Washington D.C. and the only thing that is standing between this whisker thin Senate majority for the democratics for the Democrats and. Senator McConnell taking up the gavel again. So there is this sort of cone of silence that has come down over this. Shuttering of this critical manufacturing plant in West Virginia. It seems like it is both pharmaceutical and national security suicide to close this plant. And could you talk about mansion's daughter's history there had the brush with the company and previous scandals of controversy she's been involved with? Yeah well what's really remarkable about the executive team that ran myelin over the last decade is that they're compensation has just gone up and up. There was one year in which Heather brushes payout was $25 million in 2014. Pay has gone up and up even while there has been this steady drum beat of scandals as well as regulatory run ins with the FDA. So her tenure at myelin began with this scandal in which it turned out that she had been given awarded an MBA from West Virginia university on the basis of doctored transcripts when she didn't do the coursework that MBA had to be revoked. It was awarded right after Manchin became governor that he was before senator. Then there was as you noted the scandal around the EpiPen pricing in which the price was jacked up 400% under brushes management it was handled disastrously she sort of pulled a Marie Antoinette on national television saying nobody is more upset about this than I am but everybody rightly noted that her compensation has just skyrocketed as a myelin CEO then once the Morgantown plant got into regulatory trouble with the FDA based on the kinds of data manipulation that some of the executive team had been notably involved in in their previous employment. They looked to wind down the Morgantown plant. You know? But the people who are really going to suffer here are American consumers. We need safe medication affordable medication and medication made within inspection distance of FDA headquarters. That's what the Morgantown plant offered for I think something like 5 decades. This is. This is un Mylan CEO Heather brush daughter of senator Joe Manchin. Then head of the lobbying group the generic pharmaceutical association blame the price hike on a broken healthcare system during a disastrous interview with CNBC's Brian Sullivan. Shirley you must understand the outrage. As somebody I talked to you last night said people are outraged because it seems outrageous that the American medical association has said this is basically the same product it was in 2009 and yet the price has gone up 300 or 400 fold. So look no one's more frustrated than me. I've been in this. How can you be frustrated? Then myelin CEO Heather brush who went on to lie to a congressional committee when she said the profit of a two pack of EpiPens is a $100 when it was actually a 166 about 60% higher. That's because brush sighted a profit figure that included a 37.5% tax rate on the EpiPen even though myelin paid a tax rate of just 7% that year. An analyst told The Wall Street Journal that a $100 reported profit figure has nothing to do with reality. But I wanted to ask you Catherine eben about this Tennessee plant because this is where Joe Biden weighs in. I mean when you talk about president Joe some people in Washington think you mean Joe Manchin because of his power there. What happened in Tennessee and what could Biden do here? "Money markets ending the week on a high note with the s&p just quarter of a percent from its record high leading the way big tech microsoft apple facebook off hosting substantial gains this as the yield on the ten year treasury dropped below dropped following. The may jobs report was slower than expected growth. Easing inflation concerns. Tim you're saying earlier on our call that you thought it was. It was a very big day for the market very big stretch the markets well. It's been a very big two plus weeks since we had that turnaround wednesday and and so off at intra-day low you've got markets in the snp up almost five. Excuse me four. And a half percent in short amount of time with the vicks plunging another nine percent today sixteen and a half dollar back in down mode gold. Rallying and mega cap tech outperforming. Despite the fact that if you look at mega cap tech or at least the triple cues versus the snp. They've underperformed the p. By seven and a half percent since mid february. When you know we kind of peaked on all that frothiness around and everything else. But i i do think it's a case where markets really today went into the weekend with no cares in the world seemingly with the fed on the sidelines and that worries me of it. Yeah i mean that on the sidelines is the best news. Possible the weaker than expected jobs report. Bookmark with hotter than expected inflation. Many metrics karen that that sort of gives us the sort of goldilocks for yield. Which is fantastic for big cat. Check right in the in the short term right right ultimately you do want unemployment go back down further right. But we're sort of. We don't want any sudden moves. I always think the analogy. The fed is sort of holding hostage. Nobody makes any sudden moves. We'll all get happy here alive so i feel like that was not a sudden move today so little little less than we would like but it wasn't super hot which i think would be worse so we don't have that market multiple compression that a real hot tape jobs number would have shown us to so it was just fine but i'd like to see actually a little more job growth. The market has been really performing. Well right right here. Between on the ten year it is one five five one five five two one seven four on the ten year yield. If we break down we lose value if we break above that one seven four we lose tax so of your market index person. You're hoping we break down right now as long as we stay right here. It's kind of perfect for everybody guy what do you what do you make of the market action. Yeah i love cairns analogy. But i saw dog day afternoon actually in the theaters when i was a kid and it didn't work out too well for john cascella for you folks. That know what i'm talking about. I listen i agree and right now. Everything looks great. The fed's doing everything right. I just don't know how long it's gonna last the market action. You what it's been now for the last seemingly seven or eight years you know in a couple of days market forgets about why was lower and here. We are off to the races. But peter poke far. Put up a pretty interesting piece about this number. And i think what the market fails to recognize is wage. Inflation is here and that's not going away anytime soon. I think when the market figures that out the yields that are great here one five six might be significantly higher in the weeks to come have the stocks and companies. Tim who would suffer in theory the most from wage inflation although they'd benefit on the other side in terms of customers having more money in their pockets have they factored that in. Do you think you know some some of the companies that are well really walmart exactly. Mcdonald's you name it yes so so there's different reasons why walmart is gone sideways and really not taking part of was my final trade. Last night i think walmart their profitability. Their gross margins are improving. They win the food wars eventually. And they're taking share on ecommerce. And i think that's more important. The labor input costs are significant. And it's good for america. It's good for some of the social dynamics that are awful on our country. Frankly where people are underpaid and can't raise a family working a full week at a place like walmart. I'm not saying in walmart doing this. The people but the point. You're asking about labor pressures. it's very real. And i think it's going to start to be a bigger issue. Especially with some of the industrial companies. That are going to have to also increase their their their their their paid labor but also the cost inputs in terms of materials prices. I think i think second half of the year those are big issues. I'm karen good for the consumer bad for the markets. Where do you come out on that of wage inflation. You know that's that's a i think. Nah that slightly better for the consumer. Where consumers with more money. But i for stocks. Yes in theory in theory if rates go coming up breaking up is hard to do the tweet. That's an crypto prices dropping. Today we'll bring it to you and be sure to stick around on the edge at six. Pm eastern we'll hear from the acting director of the cyber infrastructure security agency about the stunning revelation. "To shutdown of a major fuel pipeline have taking the company's data hostage. This affects nearly half of the fuel used on the East Coast of the shutdown last more than a few days. We're gonna see the price of gas start to rise like us that like it has started rising already. Here. CBS is Catherine Herridge cyberattacks shuttered more than 5000 miles of a pipeline that carries about 45% of fuel consumed on the East Coast. After hackers breached Georgia based colonial pipelines. Computer System RANSOMWARE is a national security threat. Chris Crimps, the former director of Homeland Security's cyber Infrastructure Security Agency, says criminal gang with links to Moscow is a leading suspect. Who or what was behind this attack. On Colonial. There is a ransomware crew known as Dark Side, they use kind of a double tap technique of both locking up the networks and demanding Demanding ransom but as well as export trading or taking sensitive data out of the company. Colonial runs pipelines from Houston, Texas TOE Linden, New Jersey. Transporting more than 100 million gallons of gasoline, diesel jet fuel and home heating oil every day, the company said Sunday. Some smaller lateral lines are now restored, but not the main lines. It also said is taken additional precautionary measures to monitor and protect its pipeline. Of course, the next few days that that could start Getting you could see local stocks start running a little bit. Lower ransomware attacks are a growing problem for the U. S. The homeland security secretary recently confirmed more than $350 million in ransom was paid last year with small businesses, especially hard hit. And the number of ransomware attacks spiked in 2020 by about 300% is enough being done to prevent these attacks. I don't think we've done enough of his signal very clearly. With our partners in Europe and elsewhere to the nation's like Russia that harbor these criminals and tell him that this will not stand any longer. Over the weekend, the Commerce secretary told CBS News. That's an all hands on deck situation. Current and former government officials say Ransomware criminals are ramping up attacks on critical infrastructure, including hospitals and schools that could cause harm to Americans. Catherine Herridge 10 minutes past six o'clock turning to politics now. Congress goes back to work this week. But before they start legislating, there will be a GOP vote on their leadership for the first time in public Minority leader Kevin McCarthy said the congresswoman Liz Cheney, should be replaced as the number three Republican in the House. CBS News correspondent Chris Van Cleve has that story. One party divided the Trump wing of the Republican Party is now poised to strip Wyoming's Liz Cheney of her spot as the third ranking member of House GOP leadership. We need a conference that united that's why we need a conference chair that is delivering that message day in and day out and uniting the nation. New York's elite Stefanik and ardent Trump supporter has been endorsed by minority leader Kevin McCarthy and former President Donald Trump. This is also about being one team and I'm committed to being a voice and being a clear sending a clear message that we are. One team Cheney is seen is more conservative than Stefanik and analysis shows. Cheney voted with the former president more than 90% of the time, but her consistent criticism of Mr Trump's baseless claims of election fraud. And her vote to impeach him after the January six Capitol attack have led to infighting within the party. She's lost focus on the single mission that we have in winning back. The majority to push back against the radical Biden agenda is the reason that she needs to be replaced. Cheney survived a similar vote on her leadership post in February, but does not appear to be lobbying to keep it this time writing in the Washington Post The Republican Party is at a turning point, and Republicans must decide whether we're going to choose truth and fidelity to the Constitution. Representative Adam Kinzinger is one of the few vocal Republicans supporting Liz Cheney. And I think there's a few of us that are just saying guys, This is not good, not just for the future of the party, but this is not good for the future of this country, and this debate is going to be a backdrop for two hearings on the January 6th attack this week. One is going to focus on it. Inspector general report obtained exclusively by CBS News. Had found the Capitol Police lack sufficient resources to respond to the rising level of threats and also lack a counter surveillance unit to disrupt some of those threats.
