"Year bond yield 1.45%. Alright 6 23 Now at KFBK Building a better Sacramento kfbk afternoon news with Kitty O'Neil. So tomorrow on our Friday food segment, Food and Wine magazine declared Gunther's ice cream here in Sacramento, the best ice cream in the state. We'll talk with the owners of the Curtis Park establishment again tomorrow. At 5 23 right now. California's gubernatorial recall election as we've been telling you set for September 14th Lieutenant governor Eleni could lock us announcing the date this afternoon. And as you might expect, reaction has been quick to pour in KPK political reporter Michael Laurie. Is joining us with the latest Well, Kitty. We're getting some very quick reaction from the governor's camp. Nathan Click who is the governor's communications strategist for the election, He says Californians will reject the Republican power grab on September 14th. Now, remember that phrase Republican power grab, You're going to hear it early and often in this campaign on the Republican side, Kevin Faulkner, the former mayor of San Diego, who has a lot of support from the GOP establishment, he says change is coming for California and retirement is coming for Gavin Newsom. I'll go see another Republican hopeful and former congressman from the Sacramento area, as you may remember, he says, the sooner the election the better. And John Cox, another hopeful, was in Sacramento today before the news broke about the September 14th date. But he brought out his ball of trash and blasted the governor, who, by the way does have an Achilles heel. Right now he's listed with no party designation on his paperwork. He has sued his very own appointed secretary of state to have the words Democratic Party added to his name, and that's a very big deal. Well in this state. Well, Mike is this election been fast tracked. And if so why? Well, it has been fast tracked. Democrats of the capital pushed through a bill just this week on a partisan vote to waive the 30 Day notice for a cost review. They said they already know the cost of the election, which we do now, of course, $276 million. But here's the thing Newsom is riding high in the polls in this case. The latest polls show. Newsom has about a 54% approval rating and only 40% say they want to remove him from office. And there's an old saying in politics when you've got the votes call the roll. Plus, the sooner the election, the less likely something disastrous can happen like a spike in the coronavirus deaths or, you know wildfires. So if you hold the election in September instead of October or November, when wildfires are often most extreme, remember the campfire was in November than a September election is a better bet for the governor. Well, Michael, what is happening next? What's next? We can expect more candidates to enter the ring. Already, about three dozen have done so so far ranging from politicians, the porn stars. More ads hitting the air. And this could be a three ring circus. But it will be fun to cover and for the rest of the nation to look at and make fun of two. You bet Cape Case Mike Lowrie there. Thank you is 6 26 now still to come on our kfbk afternoon news. We'll have more on today's Supreme Court decision on the Arizona election restrictions, traffic and weather together,.

"Yet fail to engage with what is really at stake, namely identifying acknowledging and removing endemic structural problems of racism in repair to form a suggestion. By more than a few people is museums wind up? The statues of problematic people in museums is the bottom of the harbour, really the right place for Statue of Colston. Of course, these questions tend to ignore that the bottom of the ocean is the final resting place for hundreds of actual. Thrown overboard from Colston's chips because they were deemed a poor investment for Colston's company on the Zeke Appel go. We've investigated what various Eastern European countries are doing with old statues of dictators like Lenin and Stalin. Monica, notice interviewed on episode. Five of this show describes how her family's native Lithuania removed. It's ubiquitous Soviet statues from city squares all across the country. The removals were events that helped build the young nation, but once the statues were removed from their original locations. No one knew quite what to do with them. Many of them ended up at something called Curtis Park a kind of half theme park that includes a massive statue garden. The statues are presented simply and somewhat randomly each has a little description of the city and square where the statue used to stand many Lithuanians and the Lithuanian government have criticized the uncritical approach to the parks laughed. Visitors are free to do whatever they want. I guess like once you got into the actual dash you. It's Kinda funny because you can do whatever you want. So like planning on top of London installing, picking their nose Tottenham on the head. Doing whatever you want but I like to think that I have some sort of connection. Some sort of understanding that spews images might have been both sterry inspirational different times. Somebody's life for me. They've always been images. That were bad like no like I. Feel like throwing I always do that. Lenin Stalin phase like these are the faces of terror that drove my grandparents out of. Yeah but. Interact with them on this like humorous level is really interesting. The situation at Bulgaria's Museum of Socialist Art in Sofia is somewhat similar. The outdoor sculpture garden is littered with statues. Commemorating Soviet power placed wherever there's room I visited many times, and I'm never quite sure how to react. There's a lot of power in deliberately taking these statues out of the context they were made for what once may have been in imposing statue, underscoring who's in charge in the public square is now just two key, leading impotently outer Rosebush in Eastern Europe the statues of. Of Lenin and Stalin and others were erected during the communist times and were swiftly removed when the system fell in the West statues erected more than one hundred years ago. Still stand without context Washington's next. Because the money he made from owning working in selling people isn't a footnote. It's the reason he was the first president. Even at the museums of Bristol Website Colston is identified as a revered philanthropist slash reviled slave trader in that order. As if the money he gave away to the city of Bristol wasn't violently extracted from the people he enslaved. It's not a sufficient answer to simply put these statues in the museum I. Don't know if there's enough museum space for all the confederate monuments in the American south or enough museum space for all the statues of King. Leopold in Belgium, but more importantly political exercise in selective remembrance neatly packaged as an unbiased archive. That statues represent is the same exercise that museums represent. Represent museums and statues are bridged together. Many of these statues are right in front of museum entrances, priming visitor for what they can expect to find inside statutes, museums share centuries long history of supporting white supremacist colonialist, racist ideologies, helping them flourish providing the evidence for them, and under girding them through their placement through their air of authority and through their supposed neutrality. The statues of American football players at American universities helps me think about this because the stakes are so low, the rivalry is so clear. Our football team has heroes and the long legacy, and it's telling that the two tools that were employed to make that point are statues and museums. This has been museum archipelago. "I'm Robert Lewis and I am so glad to be here and guess what we are actually I'm excited because we haven't done this before but we are actually doing the show from one of our open houses the open house is at thirty eight sixty two Jeffrey Avenue in Sacramento and that is in the Curtis park area and let me just tell you a little about a little bit about this home before we get back into our five ways to test drive a neighborhood but this is a great house this is a charming Curtis park Baja home located on a tree lined street just steps away from Curtis park it is move in ready and it's gonna majored as hardwood floors of living room with a nice fireplace ornate dining room and a pristine kitchen and the home has alley access to a garage with plenty of storage plus check this out it's close to the park like I said City College make George school of law track seven brewing which is a very good place and Safeway grocery store and to this Curtis park home is ready to go it's been on the market just a few days priced at three hundred and seventy four thousand five hundred dollars call us or text us the word Curtis park two nine one six two six nine thirty three thirty seven if you'd like to see it that's nine one six two six nine thirty three thirty seven but we will be here at the home in till five PM today if you'd like to see it in person that is the address once again is thirty eight sixty two Jeffrey Avenue in Sacramento well so we're talking to you about five ways to test drive a neighborhood before you're buying there and so number one was look at safety first super important stuff number two was take a staycation great ideas to actually live in the neighborhood that your thank ng that you want to live in permanently for just a couple days and number three way for the was biggest pay to off talk with the least to people risk talk to area past people themes would find rob a out bank what's going and get a few on thousand dollars would that usually number get four caught way to test drive and so neighborhood they started stealing is cars what the Doobie make a few brothers thousand say dollars and risk taken a lot it to the less streets jail time take it to but the as streets the penalties all increased around the visas the world looking in for just something about safer every city why there risk are so years in many jail neighborhoods for a few thousand with dollars a well when you can established steal a truck load history of cargo is a great hundreds way of to thousands get a feel of dollars for a neighborhood get you may of soon getting caught call we're home going to jail is by taking a few long walks around the neighborhood through this you can accomplish a lot of important things all at one time you'll be able to see how people often are in the neighborhood out in about kids playing people walking dogs and fitness folks running and biking in the area these kinds of activities suggests that people currently living there feel comfortable amongst their neighbours and if you're a runner or biker yourself I know I like to run but you can get a feel for available routes that you can take and pass that you can take and maybe even in my case not just the last Saturday I was running and a dog barked at me and I'm familiar with the area but I took a tumble because I I took a misstep when the dog barked at me and I had my headphones on so so take it into the streets gives you the chance to talk to people that already live there you can ask how they feel about living in the area what they like about it what they don't like if they have any advice that they would give someone considering buying there you can look at all of those little problems that are hard to notice when you visit a neighborhood loud noises dogs running around off the leash broken glass on the sidewalks weird smells I mean for me that's a big one if there's weird smells not so excited about it I'm these things don't necessarily make or break a neighborhood but they may make a difference to how you feel about living there and ideally you should try you know maybe taking a few different routes on your walks around the neighborhood and go at different times of the day see what's going on you know late at night and early in the morning and maybe in the afternoons it takes time but the amount of valuable information you get from it it's gonna be well worth making a decision this bag and there's a great website called walk score that provides information on how easy a neighborhood is to get around in by walking and biking and maybe public transit so if you're hoping to be you know not entirely dependent on a car or even if you just want the option to leave it behind some of the time that website walk score is a great site it's a good way to I doubt if that's a feasible option in the neighborhood you're eyeing the number five way to test drive a neighborhood is to take the taste test this is one of my most favorite things what is the local culinary scene like even if you're not a foodie I don't know if I'm a foodie but I know a lot of you are but going out to local restaurants will tell you a lot about your neighbors are the restaurant's elegant informal or they kinda hip and casual is the food basic or is it inventive are there restaurants expensive or.

I mean as evidenced by the mess that the local school district is in right now. But the crown jewels of Sacramento to me, and you might be different for everyone else. But the crown jewels of Sacramento, our our parks, Sacramento has beautiful parks, and wonderful neighborhoods that have grown up around those parks land park Curtis park McKinley park. Sure hope park, right? Yes. So many. Yeah. And east portal park as well and Glenn hall and river park, and so great parks, and you know, one idea is to just to think of them think of the money making opportunities that might be inherited in those parts. I bring up one idea, and that is I grew up across the street. I was blessed to grow up across the street from McKinley park, and what my wife, and I were first married. We lived across the street from McKinley. Park in McKinley park in the panhandle. There's a the shepherd center is there. And it's kind of a the only thing I remember going on. There were camellias shows an orchid shows where flower shows would be held right? Yes. And begonias, and it's you know, it never it never seemed to be fully utilized as a space so Kelly things having a community coffee house in a space like that run by restaurant tour, and adding a surcharge that would benefit the parks would be hugely popular and generate income all the way round. "Sharon are fine. How are you guys? We are doing good. We do have Morgan with us. She survived the skyway race. She went up down. I probably should be on the line. I was worried about a fallen off. I didn't fall off the region. And I didn't jump off the brand. No, I didn't actually take. No. I the whole point of the race. I'm competitive, I'm not stopping today can picture. I'm going. Gets. I north. I know, but I just wanted to finish his quickly as possible. Did you come in number one for the petite blondes under five feet tall category in the race? I think because I know they get very specific categories of these races. I place all the way down hill stretch. That's what we're worried about. I loved the downhill stretch. It was amazing run downhill after running uphill for what felt like an hour and a half. That's true. I wonder if if you're over a certain height or weights or something if the downhill stretch can be more dangerous like you'll topple over. But I mean, if you fall you're taking out a lot of people with you. You're both. Hell, yeah. There is a lot of people. So I could see how it could definitely be dangerous. But no ours picking up speed, I felt good. Now that was that was like the event last week. And I saw tons and tons of pictures videos from the skyway rates. All right. Sharon, we've got a busy weekend this weekend. Let's start with the grand prix racing. We've got the IndyCar series. Here's the kickoff there this series in downtown. They have a one point eight mile fourteen turns circuit. Through the downtown waterfront and you'll start to hear the buzz around Thursday and Friday with his heart practicing and starting that you can watch the car racing with big race. They, of course, all down there. Shop hawkers also feeds on IndyCar village bureau garden, get drivers autographs, and it's it's a big that I'm not big into racing not a NASCAR guy. But this seems like it would be a fun event to go to mainly because of the location. It's beautiful. Beautiful commercial for Saint Peter's dutiful, waterfront course, and and fancy racing. Yeah. This is like David Letterman has one of these cars and Paul Newman. I think also had car in the series. Isn't that the one the bachelor guy came, okay? Okay. That's why I remember it. Yeah. No are going to be there. So I'm not interested this year. Unreal. I feel like I would need to study up on some Carleen go before going to one of these things. Just in case, I'm standing next to a guy who starts talking about different engine parts and stuff like that. To have some idea. What I'm talking about? I'm gonna admit the same way. I'm like, what's the surgery, just so fast? Right. Basically, we're doing our weekend events segment here. Gasparilla yet another event if duck Gasparilla was over it's not it goes on through. I think July. What do we have this week that for season continued to really wanted to be better music festivals? It's really new I think it's mostly Curtis park. It's a great multi genre. Really good, local and regional bands. But the headliner Saturday, the Americana brothers, and Gary Clark junior is Sunday is amazing. Dairy Clark junior is unbelievable. If you go see a live act here in the Tampa Bay area this year. There's a couple who are coming in that are that are worth going to see, but I'm telling you Gary Clark junior is fantastic. Never even heard of those persons. So good. He was terrific performer and thirty dollars on Sunday house. I gotta say this festival has the best lineup of trucks and you'll ever get outdoor festival. A lot of good restaurants have set up there. And and there's also a free thing for family from a pre admission at the Gasparilla at Glazer children's these kids have a children's entertainers I planned on making fun of another Gaspar relevant. But now that they have Gary Clark junior coming. I'm gonna leave it alone. I'm telling you he's like a throwback to a Jimi Hendrix type. But he's got the blues mixed in. It's just he's got a unique sound and is one of my favorite artists. Yeah. He's terrific. And yeah. Great music festival and lots of different genres, and reasonable prices and pretty cool crowd. So Gary Clark junior is the best musician to come to town this weekend by far there's this other guy come in his name is Blake Shelton or something. Like that. I really know who he is. I just think charming about get you gotta love him. He has signed up to our country tour educated about you know, old school. He's got traits that she's going to be an early on Friday. I should say he's trace Adkins, John Anderson Pasco county zone, Bellamy brothers and also actually for the American idol alum Lauren Elena on what if on the to. And so he country fans. This is a great lineup senior country. Good. Yeah. I've seen him before. He's. So what are your favorite songs? Yeah. 'cause he's got songs from the nineties from the early two thousand t- still has hits coming down the one dating Gwen Stefani. Yes. I see. Okay. They're still together. The voice that he really loves the old school country people too. So. He's charming as all get out. Did he cheat on Miranda Lambert was that the whole thing? Or did somebody cheat is right there. Cheated on him. They were together confusing. All right. See that's what I know about. I have no idea. I couldn't I couldn't name one song that he sings. But I knew that I knew the brand Lambert Gwen Stefani. We're doing are weekend event segment with Tampa Bay times entertainment and events reporter. Sharon win the Florida strawberry festival still going on. This is the last weekend. And there's some there's some big name acts come into this as well. Yeah. I mean, you can still suffer your face with shortcake and Amish doughnuts. There's really good music festival. Thursday has for king and country of like Christian superstars, and that's also Letterman in the Kingston trio are going to be there on Friday. And then can you talk or is going to be the country Queen is going to be there Friday as well. Daddy gets. Wow. Let me tell you something you, add strawberries and Keith sweat baby's getting made that night. I didn't realize strawberries. Well. Think it's a country Chris ultimatum, and there's a lot. I mean, we have a terrific lineup of. Of course, the fair itself has got the midway and strawberries is great place to get a big flat of strawberry sheets and they're of the season. Even so you got to check that out and there's another country act on top of all the country after we talked about so far coming to town. Platinum on Lori Morgan if Europe a started number included with admission she's here now all of this all week long through Saturday shifts to shows day at one thirty eleven thirty and one thirty in the sandy Diego there and secluded with admissions part of their real music series. Longest running series. That's starting to send. I thought that was kinda nice little. If you if you have to have a pass Morgan the artists would last name Morgan. She is good. She's my grandma's favorite. Really? Yes. Yes. I'm sure that's just the endorsements. He wanted. System get heads. I I literally I remember growing up and listening to her cassettes and my grandma's car USF game. What's that all about? There's a video game club at USO. And they host your things on campus. Nixon. Organized. It's the Florida collegiate gaming convention. It's going to be the only center corral gymnasium mix of center there. And you got to consider that these these e e sports are bigger than the Super Bowl attendance. They're gonna I expect hundred stable shelter this. It's free admission and it's only five or ten dollars to compete with some of the different tournaments for XBox. And Maya car Jack box so interesting like different kinds of seeing played a gymnasium this weekend. Saturday at the ceiling. In the newsroom wild. Of course. Right, right. I look to each their own. But if you're part of the video game club at USF, you know, maybe try to hit a bar every now and then get out get out a little bit. Oh, yeah. I don't think scholarships and save let's talk about a couple of festivals coming to town. We've got the Tampa taco festival and then beer week continues as well. Exactly hardware four. But there's going to be a serious abundance of tacos in Allison park fucking Tampa..

"So if you stayed in five points or Curtis park area, then you're staying right below rhino that has that's closer to Coors field and all that stuff as well. So that whole area rhino five points, Kurdish part anywhere in there would be walkable to any of those other areas. So if you're in those neighborhoods, you're good and you can also walked downtown from there. Right? You want to see some things in the downtown when I was looking up great coffee shops. A lot of them were in five points. So there's just a lot of fun. Cool trendy places to go to. So especially if your goal is to kind of eat and drink, then fueled as near, they're going to be name. Then those are the areas that you want to stay. Yeah, right. South of all of those is an area called Lodo and that's lower downtown. So that's going to be a little more where you're hotels are in downtown areas while businesses, the capital also really need areas less I would say new. Cool, right? Like then rhino and five wins occurs part, but kind of the epicenter of, I don't know. I want to call it like a hard regular. Yeah, just regular Denver, also. Very beautiful because when we were there five years ago, we stayed right downtown at one of the chain hotels, which was very nice think it was a Marriott or something. And that was a cool experience to because there's definitely a lot to see. But for the new trending places, those the neighborhoods a little further away are a little further north, and you could. I mean you could stay in load own. Walked to them, all of this is pretty tight and pretty come back. And then if you get a little further out to the east from Lodo. So is city park and that that's going to be a little harder to work, walk to rhino and five points. Maybe looking at a mile mile and a half depending where you are, but city park is a beautiful park in its own right? A little quieter, a little more residential. You know, you have a little more what I would call stately home, so there's stuff out there. So again, if you want something like that, that might be a place to stay, and it's also very close to the zoo because the zoo is in city park. So if one of your goals is to go to the Denver zoo and you want to be able to walk there, that would be the neighbor disdain. Yeah. What are you talking about? Walking getting around Denver. You have a multitude of options and they're all pretty easy. That's one of the things that I like about newer cities like Denver as compared to you know, old school these cities, Denver, very, very walkable..

"They just put in train line, which is great, which is amazing because before he used to have to taxi or Uber and will you still can't Uber cost about forty dollars to get downtown. So you know, if you have a lot of people or a baby or something, and you don't want to take the train, it's a good option. But the train is so easy to use. We took it on the way back. To the airport when we were leaving with wit and all of our stuff, and it was very easy minute. Ride may nine dollars their new train. So they're clean and nice and the nine dollars. What's cool about that is that is for a day pass so you, you can have that always until two AM from when you buy it. So not that you'd go back and forth to airport. But if you came from the airport, you pay your nine bucks and you can use that to get downtown. You can use that to get all around. So it's nine dollars for for regional day pass. They also have day passes and we'll talk about this when we're talking about getting around for like five bucks. If you don't have to go to the airport and you're just staying local. So that's how to get in one of the cool things about Denver is that there are bunch of neighborhoods like any city. I love neighborhoods. Do you really? I really do, and thank you for others. Listeners who always point out to me through tweets like, oh, we love your neighborhood. Second got on Everest. It is fun. It is fun, but it's also informative because when you go to a city, you always think what's the best place to stay in a lot of the times it's where all the hotels are because you're staying in a hotel, but now that it's so easy to find places to rent through Airbnb and other websites, it's fun to know what neighborhoods are cool, especially if you've never been there before. So this particular time we stayed pretty far outside of Denver, so I wouldn't necessarily recommend the Airbnb that we were staying in because there wasn't a lot around other than the fact that it was a two minute walk to the train that takes you right downtown, right? And we stayed there because we needed a five bedroom because we're bringing our whole team into town. And so to get a five bedroom out of somewhat affordable price, we had to stay about three miles north east of the downtown core and some of these neighborhoods that we're gonna talk about now. So again, I wouldn't. It wasn't the best place to stay. If you if you're only going for a couple of days and you want it to be bunked in and be able to walk everything, Denver, if that is what you wanna do, walk. Everything kind of be right in the action. I, we recommend a few neighborhoods here. So the rhino neighborhood that's river north is the. It used to be old and industrial, like most cities. Now that's now hip and cool. So if you go to rhino very hip. Very cool. It is. It's all stores and shops and breweries, I mean, it's the epicenter for everything new that's popping up. So if you want that type of guy, they also have like the crush walls, which are the graffiti walls, which are really, really fun to walk through lots of Instagram, -able photo, opportunities in front of all these graffiti walls. You have the central market which we're going to talk about their so rhino is the place to be if you're looking for that. And actually all of these neighborhoods that we're gonna talk about our right around grind who so there, you know, you could stay in rhino, which we love. Again, maybe there's not as many places to stay because it's a lot of businesses and Parisian things Airbnb, and I did pass a beautiful boutique hotel. We didn't stay at, nor did we go into, but you know, there's some cool trendy spots there for sure. Yes, she got rhino right south of that. And then a little east of that is this Eric called five points slash Curtis park? I like neighborhoods. I wasn't there that long. I can't tell where one starts where one ends, but that's also right in that area..
