An Apple Ad-pocalypse For Everyone?

"You know about those changes to ad tracking that apple is going to flip the switch on on ios. Soon you know how facebook has said this will hurt small businesses and also them quite directly. They've also admitted. Well as this ad pacalypse creeps ever closer. There is increasing chatter about how big this move might actually be for basically everyone let me hit some of the most recent takes for you i. What prompted me to lead with this. Today is that in their earnings last night. Snap had to warn that. The coming changes by apple to idea a could have a materially adverse effect on their business and it wasn't just snap either unity also came out and said idea changes will hit the pocketbooks of all mobile game developers quoting cnbc. Unity software said in its earnings report. That the changes will affect the way mobile game developers get and quote how they optimize lifetime. Customer value and quote although it's difficult to estimate our guidance assumes idea changes begin in the spring and will reduce revenue by thirty million dollars or three percent of revenue in two thousand twenty one. The company wrote in prepared remarks for its q. Four earnings report snap chief financial officer derek. Anderson said the apple changes would present a risk of interruption to demand after their implemented quote. It is not clear yet. What the longer term impact of those changes may be for the top line momentum of our business and this may not be clear until several months or more after the changes are implemented. He said quote so coincident with that. I know that this is long. Reads day but i encourage you to check out ben. Thompson's free article from strategically this week because it is the most sober and i opening look at this situation that i've seen anywhere thompson did a qna with mobile marketing analyst. Eric su firt and he had some interesting things to say about. Apple's true motivations and all of this and how these changes could ripple out to affect not only game developers but things like chiappa fi and the smaller businesses on that platform. I highly highly recommend. You read the whole thing. But i'm going to quote two parts for you first up. This is ben quote the thing that is always kind of weird to me about this. Is i think people underestimate and frankly i think apple underestimates the degree to which apple's growth in services revenue growth in. The app store is because of facebook and that facebook and apple have had this very symbiotic relationship. facebook has done. All of apple's dirty work and apple has harvested thirty percent on the back end just by virtue of owning the app store. The question i have is. Is it possible. That apple is shooting themselves in the foot here and their services revenue actually takes a meaningful hit because they've destroyed the engine driving it and they didn't even realize it because they actually didn't understand facebook's role in this and then this is eric's answer quote. I don't think so. I think apple very much recognizes the role that it plays in the app ecosystem which is the distribution engine for apps. And i think that's what apple doesn't like. I think apple sees that the app store has basically become irrelevant as a point of content discovery. It's basically this kind of frictional annoying moment between clicking an ad and installing an app almost all discovery happens via ads or word of mouth. And i think what apple is doing in this in recognizing the power that facebook has in terms of influencing which apps become big which apps are popular. How people are using their iphones. Essentially in recognizing that apple is trying to regain control of that because if apple cripples advertising which is doing mobile advertising this is all happening within the context of all this stuff. That's happening on the browser which we don't need to go down that rabbit hole but apple has been the instigator of all of that too if apple cripples mobile advertising than the app store becomes the primary discovery point for apps again and apple decides how people use our iphones apple decides which are the most popular. And by the way. That's a position that apple used to occupy twenty twelve twenty. Thirteen apple was kingmaker. If you've got featured your company valuation might increase by one hundred million dollars it was really important to make that pilgrimage to apple. Go to cupertino and beg for featuring please feature as please give us the headline featuring because that would make such a big difference to our company then in that way apple got to influence. What kind of apps made and how you made them. So my sense here is that apple wants to regain that control and quote and then from further down in the piece. This is ben again. The great thing from google's perspective is they get to copy everything. Apple does which completely benefits them because apple wants to kill cookies. Google's like that's fine. We have the browser. We have the app store and we're justified in doing blatantly anti-competitive things because we're just copying apple. The apple. google duopoly is really ruling. Everything and this is eric's response. Yeah google silence on this issue has been really intriguing. Because i think they've got to feel like a little bit stuck. It's like well okay. We're going to slow copy apple on any privacy initiative. It does because we don't want to allow apple to create a competitive advantage around being seen as the privacy centric mobile platform but at the same time they run an ad network so day can't come out and demonize targeted advertising. Because well that's how they make some substantial portion of their money. Ben interjects here. They're being sued for antitrust. And this is so blatantly. Anti-competitive and eric responds right exactly. They've got a fine line to walk. And i think they've you to a very shrewd approach. Which just like you said. Kind of copy. What apple is doing but doing it in a way that is not a full manifestation of that and quote again read. The whole thing cannot recommend it highly enough are we all of us in the tech ecosystem facing an ad pacalypse

"Hyundai's not sure it even wants to build a car for apple. A number of reports have indicated. That apple is partnering with hyundai. Either to work together on an apple car or for the automaker to build a car for the cupertino company now. Some inside the car maker or expressing misgivings. I say. it's gossip because they're no names. Tobacco the assertion rather a reuters report highlighted by apple insider has three anonymous exacts laying out reasons. They're not sure getting into bed. With the cupertino company. Is the best idea quoting one of the executives tech firms like google and apple. Want us to be like foxconn. Cooperation may initially help raise the brand image of hyundai or kia that is a hyundai subsidiary. But in the mid or longer term we will just provide shells for the cars and apple would do the brains quoting another exac. The hyundai motor group is concerned that the hyundai brand would become just apples contract manufacturer. Which would not help hyundai in its effort to build a more premium image with its genesis luxury sedan brand finally one exotic is quoted as saying we are agonizing over how to do it whether it is good to do it or not. We are not a company that manufacturers cars for others. it's not like working with apple would always produced great results. Apple is the boss. They do their marketing. They do their products they do. Their brand hyundai is also the boss. That does not really work.

"Cupertino California apple today, announced that sir, Johnny ive, Apple's chief design officer will depart the company as an employee later this year to form an independent design company, which will count apple among its primary clients, while he pursues personal projects. I've in his new company will continue to work closely and on a range of products with apple while I mean while on one hand, I'm devastated as someone who started out in this business as a designer Gianni and his relationship with apple was just everything I looked up to everything is fired to be on the other hand, though. As someone no longer in design. Johnny, I've set free, but still connected to apple is something I really, really deeply feel but sorry, I, I wasn't going to do this video today. I was going to wait and think, on it a bit and do a deeper, more forward-looking video tomorrow. But then you guessed it, the internet happened hot takes began to rain. In down, like medias and a Michael bay movie. And as expected, a lot of them were just as terrible, like terrible set and exhaust terrible. That's why ultimately decided to split my video in to, to get something short out now today and then focus on something deeper for tomorrow, so hit subscribe rugby-tackled that bell, mostly. You don't miss tomorrow show. And then buckle up. I'm Rene Ritchie. And this is Victor Johnny is a singular figure in the design world and his role in Apple's revival. Cannot be overstated from nine hundred ninety eight groundbreaking. I MAC to the iphone and the unprecedented ambition of apple park, where recently, he has been putting so much of his energy and care. That's the statement from Tim cook, apple CEO, apple will continue to benefit from Johnny's talents by working directly with them on exclusive projects and through the ongoing work of the brilliant and passionate design team. He has built after so many years, working closely together, I'm happy that relationship continues to evolve and I look. Forward to working with Johnny long into the future. Okay. But so what does all this mean I, Johnny has literally been at apple since the second coming of Steve Jobs, when it comes to personal computing? He's been there designed that. He's won more awards and been on more patents and entire companies combined. He's a big part of the reason almost all phones are now singular slabs why every laptop for a long time was wedged as air and why it was so hard for so long to tell any other tablet apart from the ipad. He was a design league not just for apple unofficially, for the industry, but he's also a designer a passionate beyond talented designer who outside of a few projects for product red hasn't been able to design much of anything else in two decades, not a set of chairs or a desk. Not a bicycle or personal jet plane. Not a set of knives, or a grandfather clock, he's designed the best selling products in the history of bestselling products. But that's all he's been able to design that is. Aside from his recent flirtation with apple park, and apple retail. Why would Johnny? I've leave apple only for this new design company. Love from to be hired by apple again, before it even officially launches sometime next year. Probably because it's a win win for everyone involved first apples. No stranger to working with outside design companies prior to the age of I've frog design helped make so many of Apple's early products. So ecomomic apples, also worked with outside agencies in the past with whom they've created some of the most memorable ads of all time. Johnny is the reason they haven't been doing it since Johnny. And now that they might start doing it again. Either in name only, or as a real deep collaboration time will tell it'll be with you. Guessed it, Johnny. And with Marc Newson, who's joining Johnny at from love after spending the last few years with him at apple not only shaping products in his own, right. But as a kindred spirit in a way that no one else could be since the passing of Steve Jobs. Second, Johnny not only knows everything apple has done up until. Now, he knows everything. The company is currently working on for the future as well. His team has been pushing out designs not just for the next generation of products like glasses auto motives, but prototyping and brainstorming generations of products after that, having some extra insurance wrapped up around that is in everyone's benefit, especially because third, it pre-empts just a ton of silly speculative headlines around, what if Google or Samsung or while way or whatever competitor hired love from and Johnny fourth? It keeps Johnny in the apple family, even if he's moved out and gotten his own space, and that doesn't just cut down the neighborhood drama. It keeps up the fields in the family design team leaders Evans, Hanky vice president of industrial design and Alan die vice president of human interface. Design report to Jeff Williams. Apple's chief operating officer both die. Hanky have played key leadership roles in Apple's design team for many years. Williams has led the development of apple watch since inception, and we'll spend more of his time working with the design team. In their studio now. She's not very well known outside of apple at all, but by every account, I've heard so far Evans is beyond solid. She's been effectively running industrial design for years, since almost after Johnny left, day-to-day management, there to focus on apple park, and apple retail. And she deserves a ton of credit for a lot of what the team has done over the last few years, and, yeah, feel free to transform that credit into blame if you're super salty and spicy about things like the butterfly keyboard, but it takes a company and years to let that ship, and I can get into that. In a follow video if you want me to let me know in the comments, but it's probably fair to judge her by the next keyboard than this one, just like the next air pods. And, you know, next generation of I phones having her and Alan die whose effectively been running HI since seven report into Jeff Williams is going to be a real head scratcher for a lot of people, and it's a bold choice, but I'm not sure it's a bad one neither Evans, nor Allen are being promoted this point and having them go back to reporting Tim cook like die. Richard Haworth did. Johnny was off working on apple park would have felt to me more like apple had no other idea what to really do it them. Jeff by contrast has been running apple health and apple watch for years and not just the way Dan rea show. Run some special projects groups or q runs. Apple TV Jeff is incredibly detail, oriented, and has a real passion for design part of the reason sub econ was promoted to senior vice president of operations was, so Jeff could spend more time focusing on product including especially design, also apple doesn't just meant senior vice presidents. Let alone C level executives, even two of the most important hires in the recent history of the company, Johnny Saruji who runs silicon, and John Andrea who runs machine learning took some time to get their senior vice president power ups, if apple is considering anyone internal, or external for senior vice president, design, I wouldn't expect to hear about until after some time passes, and a big new product version lodges after nearly thirty years on countless projects. I am most proud of the last day work, we have done to create. A design team process and culture at apple that is without peer today. It is stronger more vibrant and more talented that at any point in Apple's history. That's according to Johnny. I've the team will certainly thrive under the leadership of Evans Alan and Jeff who have been among my closest collaborators I have the utmost confidence in my designer colleagues at apple who remained my closest friends and look forward to working with them for many years to come. There's an incredibly crucial point inside their apple is absolutely the some of its people from Steve Jobs to Johnny is to Tim cook to everybody else. But everyone will leave eventually everyone or apple to truly last it has to have a soul beyond those people. The most important product everyone at apple works on every day isn't the apple watch it isn't the ipad. It isn't even the iphone. It's apple. It's making apple into something that can not only survive, but thrive even after any of them now you're going to hear from some people that Johnny checked out of apple after Steve Jobs passed away or. Shortly before he took on the very different challenges of apple park, and apple retail and for some people even at apple both of those things are going to be true for others, though, for the one still working within presenting to Johnny on a regular basis, it's going to sound beyond ridiculous. And that's because the internet like people just aren't good with multiple truths were not as simplistic, as catchy headlines and hot takes make us want to imagine and situations are seldom as extreme where complicated, we're contextual. And so our passions in relationships Donnie, led the team that designed everything at apple then the teams that designed the places to put all those teams and all those things he has I can only imagine look upon the breadth of his product portfolio and felt like he had no world left to conquer. Imagine how that must feel to one of the greatest industrial designers in history. And then imagine what doing something like love from must feel with one of your best mates and a deal that lets you still create with apple. But also create beyond apple create anything whole new. The world whole new challenges in potentials product red electric bikes be blasted aluminum hot tubs, Siri bubbles. Whatever he wants whatever he can dream up and will into production and who knows in a few years. Maybe we'll documentary on curiosities dream about his impact. I mean, they have one up on Frank Gehry after all, but also much more..

"The biggest entrepreneur destination on the planet, this Business Rockstars, and I am joined by Richard Wolpert today. He is the co founder and CEO of Hello tech also venture partner at amplify LA. An excel so we were talking about the hand. You have many different businesses. But you started really it can be traced back to when your kids if you could just give us an overview of your entrepreneurial journey sure as a kid, I did things like the Rosh sales, and I had a paper route, and I would do a lot of raffle ticket sales fundraisers, and my family tells me that they knew early on that I was going to do something entrepreneurial. When I graduated college, I wanted to be an entrepreneur, but I didn't know what to do. And I got this job offer to work for apple. And this is nine hundred eighty four the year that the very first MacIntosh shifts which was an amazing machine for the that point in history. So I moved to Cupertino from L A and worked at apple on a max offer team for three years. But the whole time I have this year running desire to just start a company and I took the three years just to learn what it was like to work in a big company and better understand how to develop software for the MacIntosh, and I left there after three years and back down to Los Angeles, part of that also was Cupertino, which is Apple's had quarters in one thousand nine hundred five eighty six was not a very fun place. Especially, especially if you grew up in LA coming from Portland, it might have been okay, but coming from it was a tough, but I moved back down to my very first start up. I was called after our software. I didn't know how to raise money I was unsophisticated time in the ways venture capital, so we did consulting to apple to American Airlines to NBC to the Los Angeles Rams back when they were the original Angeles Rams building custom software for the MacIntosh, and then use that revenue to actually build consumer software for the MacIntosh and built that company for eight years and sort of the early entrepreneurs dream. I started that company at I think twenty five and sold it at thirty one to adobe for a very nice sum of money after doing it for about seven eight years. Got the bug. Now, I was obligated as most entrepreneurs are to stay on for twelve months post selling the company help integrate the company into the buying company. But I, I had no intention, nor do the Dobie. They understood it was fine. To stay longer than twelve months, because I wanted to go on into the next thing and the next thing for me actually happened to not be a star. It was I was. Recruited by Disney to help start run Disney online, which was a great way to just learn about a big company because apple when I was there again, in perspective, nineteen eighty-five talking thirty years ago, which makes the old. Was about twelve fifteen hundred people and then I got this job at Disney, which one hundred thousand person company, and I was president of Disney online funny stories, so somebody came to meet with me from corporate, like my second day on the job. And I had only done a startup and worked at apple. And they told me that my budget's decorate my office Disney because I was a president was fifteen thousand dollars. Oh my God, I started with no money always so through go. And here's a interior designer telling me that my budget's decorate. Must be nice. It was it was odd. It was different from me. Oh, yeah. That's quite the change. So it's interesting because you did have that experience working for me. Now, obviously, Apple's huge and Disney, which was already huge when you worked for it, and there's a common question for new entrepreneurs have, and that's to echo straight into entrepreneurship or is it valuable and sometimes even necessary to work for other companies, I learned from them, what is your opinion? I think it's a great question I think to work for another company, and learn at least for two three, four years can really, really make a difference in helping you be successful. There's a similar thing that happens with business schools. Right. So, like if you look at UCLA business school, or Stanford, or Harvard, they will only take nobody out of undergraduate. They want you to work at a business for two or three years, and then apply. And I think that same model to question which was a great one applies to entrepreneurship. If you go, and you get the experience of being part of a start up and you get to see what it's like from the inside. It just educates you on what to do. And then you can take that step educate you on how to run your business because you learn from successful successful, people also I think that's where a lot of the ideas are generated and confused, see where the holes are in your industry, and I've interviewed so many entrepreneurs that, that's how they came up with their billion dollar idea. So okay, after Disney that you went back into entrepreneurship boundary preneurs shifted sue startups after that one was called checkout dot com, which was the ecommerce site selling CDs DVD's video games. We sold that company to warehouse music, which was a retail national chain of times back when people would go to a store to buy CD's DVD's that about five hundred stores in the US did the one year thing again, like I did with adobe, and then I did a internet radio up called audio mill and sold that to real networks, the pioneers of video and audio streaming on the internet, and that one was different. Because that when they acquired my company, the CEO, and founder of real networks, acquired us said, look, Richard. I'm buying you as much as I'm buying the company. So you have to stay for a minimum of three years. You can't just stay for a year on that deal. Actually ended up staying about five so terribly was reason why say longer they had to. It was it was fast growing an interesting in funds. So it was the years of that were like two thousand one two thousand six and real was still the pioneer of streaming audio video, and I had a lot of autonomy, and respect from rob. The CEO like I in two thousand three said, you know what I think streaming music is the future, I think Sienese are going to die. I think the buying a song at a time is going to go away, and we found this company called rhapsody and we bought and rob. Let me lead the acquisition of that company. Rhapsody is actually today known as Napster a long sort of circular history. Right. Because we all know that Napster was as the legal file sharing thing back in two thousand shut down by the music labels that the rights of it were bought by a company that sold surreal networks as well. So but it was a great. It was a great run. For five years, I ran a two hundred million dollar piano, meaning revenue of my division was about two hundred million dollars, and I had worldwide responsibility. So I could travel all over the world and make sure that things are going well. But after five years, it was like enough. So I wanted to do something else. So last thing you'll actually partner with other businesses and be there in house tech support through Hallo tax how that works. So what Hello offers is basically a talked about early Uber for in-home tech support or installation or training. So one of our huge partners Samsung, and we are the in-home set. Yup. Demo. Company for the new galaxy s eight such a huge partnership for us. We have another one with the video doorbell company called ring, which has a really cool product video doorbell at videotapes anything that happens at your front door. We've partnered with a company called tease which has about five million broadband customers, who need. TV mountings printers that a smart home. Installations, smart lock. Installations are businesses actually, at Helo tech, half direct to consumer where we market our services. But.

"We're only a third way through the questions. We're gonna finish. All these. I wanted to talk about booking, and and how you guys manage that piece of your your your respective businesses are using Travelocity Expedia. Do you have a, you know, a person that you can just dial up and say, hey, I need to go to auto Mongolia? Make it happen. You know, or do you handle it yourself? You sit on the couch with your laptop and book all your travel yourself Lee her. But how does that how does that come to fruition for you? Do you do it yourself or do you have people to do for you a little bit of both actually? So I I actually enjoy researching. Flights and working out the best routes, and how could do the seats on that stuff? It will though my wife is it off to booked honeymoon. I'm never allowed to do that for us again. But that's another story keel trip from Cupertino back to Mobin that was that was me. But that's because the second one was booked before the first one happened. So the second one was booked, and then the first the Cupertino job came in after the Israel and Hong Kong trips all the Hong Kong and Israel, one was with my wife, and my son if I said to her I'll meet you in Israel, you fly all the way by yourself with him. I would have not been meeting anyone. Yeah. So. Yeah. So so I do look I research that stuff myself because that's something that I enjoy doing. But most of the time when it comes to booking again, I'm very lucky 'cause I've done quite a lot of work with a particular travel company over here. And so like they've sent me out on a lotta shoots internationally. And so I've got someone may that I can just call up and go, hey, I've just been looking at these in these flights do these look rights, and is there difference of ibook than more you book them? And then they'll tell me, you know. Hey, we can save a couple of hundred bucks. So now, you just book it yourself. Don't worry about night yet. Nice. That's cool. See, that's that's hopeful. What about what about you, man? Are you the same similar flow? I mean thinking about the stuff that you're doing like doing his exotic workshops and in Africa in different places like that. I would imagine that you're working through a tour guide company to help you with that stuff or mouth bass. Maybe I should be. But no, it's me. My wife also helps out sometimes often, you know, sometimes it's just gets ridiculous. You looking at a connection say where it was. I I can't remember I think it was in Vegas, and I needed to get to Laos and ended up. It was either like a forty eight hour trip or a ten thousand dollar trip. No hope screw it. I'm taking two days to get. This is what it is. It's too options. But I tend to use website code hip monk. Have you heard of it like chipmunk without you know, it's pretty cool day. If you say you want to go from here to here it shows at all like a botched showing flight layover flight and the start and finish times on a twenty four hour. Sliding calendar and will organize it by price or time will agony which includes like the layover times. But so we'll look at that. And then if it's hotels stuff check, there's a. Review sites that my wife's really good at checking their real traveler photos full made to save they what they say they up, but then wherever possible electorally ended up booking at through the airlines on website because when you need to make changes it's a bull like if you booked at through someone else in the whole up even J L who a all about service. They'll say, oh, you book these with expedient, you need to call Expedia and expedience seventy five bucks in an Expedia owns everything. I also own hotels dot com. This and that so it's if you booked through the align itself, oh, even the hotel's website itself. Though..

"Things suit against apple here's something sorta surprising abal insiders says a couple of major apple shareholders are asking the cupertino company to study the impact of smartphone addiction on kids for one of the shareholders the california state teacher's retirement system the moves not really that surprising apple insider says a letter shared on line by the retirement system and the other major shareholder jana partners suggests that there is a growing body of evidence that for youth with more intense habits smartphones maybe having unintentional negative consequences the groups argue that growing societal unease could eventually effect apple and that stemming the problem now will aid the company shares armed with the dc number of scary numbers the letter suggests that iphone set up include parental controls asking for the age of the user and setting such parameters as appropriate limits on screen time hours of the day and which social media nia services a child can access other suggestions include further study of the issue having a high level apple executive monitor and report on the issue and finally educating parents about the issue the letter was posted on friday not surprisingly apple does not seem to have responded at this point here's a fun little follow up to meltdown and specter business insider ran appease last week saying that intel ceo brian cranach knew about the vulnerabilities when he sold 24 million dollars worth of intel stock these are the vulnerabilities that effect processors from intel arm and a md as a reminder the site meltdown attacked dot com says meltdown breaks the most fundamental isolation between user applications and the operating system this attack allows a program to access the memory and thus also the secrets of other programs and the operating system specter breaks the isolation between different applications it allows an attacker to trick errorfree programmes which follow best practices and the leaking their secrets in fact the safety checks of said best practices actually increase the attack surface and may make applications more susceptible.
