A highlight from S13 E10: City of London & Equal Opportunities Discussion

"Alright alright yeah they might join us well hopefully yes that'd be good yep so I'm ready when you are alright let's go okay so I've been looking at lighters and cigars lately oh yeah mainly the point lighters and yeah the point lighters st. the point the point later it's just been curious might be something I might want to do I might want to collect lighters for some weird reason I think it might be cool don't like the smoke I don't really have anything to celebrate so maybe not smoke them but it might be good to try one at least once yeah sweet I'm hoping that Faith be joins come on ask her what's her why she it's on your teeth yeah that'd be interesting I mean I on one hand I can understand where she's coming from with what's being said about him but on the other hand I think it's important to do research because you never know unless you understand the full context not not to say everyone doesn't understand but you never know if you'd be lied to what if what we see right now is just an illusion true make to believe what we want to believe then you can live in your own fantasy land yes and a matter how hard you tried to be red -pilled you're always gonna get blue pill out of nowhere yep you gotta have a sharp mind yes yes I don't get why she thinks that men thinks she was much who I don't get what she was talking about earlier well and get understand that she doesn't want men to take over but the country of the world was built by men it was built by it every major corporation was built by a man or the vast majority of them I'll give them that I'll give the there have been some very famous male sign to female scientists Madden Curry Mary not to mention I will give them the fact that they a woman did help create the atomic bomb well I did help Einstein create the atomic bomb basically finished the Manhattan Project so they did help build that I'm not saying they can't become the biggest richest man the richest person in the world but I don't think it's gonna happen anytime this century I could be wrong I think it takes determination for women to show that they could do whatever man can it's just that that little amount of determination that there is representation on their behalf they need they need they need there needs to be something that's shown that it is possible regardless of gender religion sexuality at most whatever people group whatever people group there is a chance that you can make it I am gonna say this not all women were Putin present not all women were given their position because they're a talent a vast majority of them and this is sad to say but it kind of means women success but which is true happenstance is the fact a vast majority of these women they were put in positions that they had no business being put into didn't have the skills enough talent they were just put in there because it what's fp they want to say oh we hired a first female VP yeah oh bug off this also experience was her background exactly they don't know it they do what they do it's just ridiculous I know there are people I'm not saying all women are all women were put in this position like this I'm sure there's some ones are very qualified for the jobs and they were put given this corrosion given these opportunities but you've got a quick question of a lot of them were they truly given this jokes of our talents or they just get promoted for worship for virtue like the GM CEO Mary Barra she's unqualified unfit and quite honestly I'm surprised she hasn't been sucked and she's gonna be one of the main reasons why General Motors probably goes under that's just one not to mention I think that will be there I personally believe the future of American companies are all being run by Indian India like so basically yeah Google Indian feel Microsoft Indian there's probably offers swells is there so uh have you heard the news what news up Obama might be gay well I already know that I'm talking about another thing what's over news okay you see no there's this new immigration rule for the UK what's the immigration law so basically in short even if you're a foreigner where you're allowed to enter the UK visa -free you still need something that's called an ETA so you need permission even if you're a foreigner in a country where you can answer enter the UK visa -free you'd certainly permission to come into the country to do whatever and you can stay no longer than six months with the exception of going there for work or even long or long -term study so even if you so they have to get they actually have to go for citizenship yes you need to ask permission to the government to enter the country apply for citizenship by it seems how's the vast majority taken that well what do you think well I shouldn't you should you should know that unless we don't have a fucking field day but let's be real here yes is a little bit concerning but something has to be done about immigration yeah but but not like this so what so what so what let's repeat what they're doing again so basically blocking anybody from coming into the country technical yes what they are promoting is they need to ask the government permission to enter the country even to foreigners in countries that are given free to free access into the UK you still need to ask the government hey can I come in and then if they say yes then you can go in I wonder how that I wonder if I'll stop the boats I don't think I don't think it's about the boats what do you think that that's a separate story what do you think it's about then what do you think it's about control or for it is well has soon that killed his opportunity of staying in in power or is he oh no he's killed his chances ages ago at this point people can people are safely saying then the next election labor majority as I'll never fucking happen that'll never fucking happen well the odds say otherwise I know you don't believe I don't believe everything here in the media I wouldn't trust I wouldn't trust stormer without ever could touch him with two pennies oh no I'm not I'm not painting this in the media the the book he's saying that well the bookies are always the bookies said but Trump would never win and he did win so he's still got his chances if he can fucking fix the economy cuz trust me it's not gonna get better under stormer storms a fucking idiot if you're under stormer Jamie you're gonna be getting rid of your oil and gas you'll be dependent on the thingy and we'll be literally sucking up will be sucking will be the LGBTQ will be plastered around every fucking set will be plastered all around England you've seen the state of Scotland don't let it come to that point I feel sorry for Scots we are gonna hit I hate the LGBTQ I think some a lot of nonsense called mentally ill people doesn't help fun to smoke the representative in my stay in my down the road representative in like one of my districts that is transgender I never happens it is very important to ask people why why are you feeling the way you are why are you doing the things that you're doing I think it's a lot of it I think it's mainly really for attention at least if what we need to do is stop giving these people attention stop giving these people stopping knowledge in their existence because we acknowledge your existence we're just encouraging their behavior it's like saying when you are when a baby when a cries baby cries you don't give it attention cuz it just it you're just rewarding it what we need to do is figure out a way to lower prices on properties what we need is cheap food we need the pricing on food to be as cheap as possible need the prices on property to be cheap so what I'm thinking to stop to solve that I'm thinking what if we were to create a bond what we were to create like a special thing right about basically help give give give everybody give people everyday people an opportunity to basically buy a house so basically cutting the prices in half right and give and give it it's only a certain type of thing that's only allowed for everyday people for the everyday people for the people and not and called big corporations can't use let use it what I'm suggesting we do is give like give massive loopholes for everyday people but bar and control property it's limit them at property but but like the likes of Blackrock the crop price Warhouse Cooper TSB and all these banks in Britain can buy so I've heard rumors that TSB is looking to get into the property market rental property markets which is quite interesting I so else's sir be bought into any new companies lately good strategy the changes in the stock market or the economy for that matter you got anything in pharmaceuticals besides John and Johnson and Johnson there's not much big father I'm investing in it till right now sure if things go away I think is you might be getting a shitload of money off Johnson Johnson soon because of the the sniff yes a district in California basically banned masks in backseat basically banned wearing on masks let's start yeah but it's a district that's always mainly Republican okay okay that makes sense you'd be surprised but there's a lot of Republicans in in California the only thing is so it's not enough to clear the state I do think that California is not big it should be split into two states I'm saying like it should be the north and the east of California one side we should do north of California and east of California and split it down the middle and basically one I personally think that should be it give more delicate seats but remember give more opportunities but not to mention it might be a thing that it might give over can I think all the all the side with Ellie I think everything to do with Ellie and Cupertino should be Cupertino LA California Cupertino all of that should be under one state and the rest of it should be the number let San Francisco I kind of like the north -south California divide yeah well I think in San Francisco part of California oh yeah it's a famous coastal city of California why can't we make that and why can't we make that and it surrounds areas its own state I don't think it's big I don't think it's big enough to be its own state I think it'll be as close as Rhode Island or Delaware it's it's the smallest area let's go but I'm saying the Bay Area maybe California big you know yeah I think I think San Francisco Bay and other neighboring neighborhoods that I think that should be enough to it for it to become its own stuff yeah it could be the next Washington DC what do you mean a shithole well yes but it's also like a district that's predominantly Democrats Washington DC ever since the u .s.

We got a lot of green on the screen here, but the volume is light. We constantly underestimate the strength of the U .S. consumer. This is a market that's much more optimistic or bullish than maybe the central bankers are. Breaking market news and insight from Bloomberg experts. There's still some concern out there in the market that there is room for things to deteriorate a little bit more than what they're indicating. As small and medium sized businesses struggle, they don't present as much competition. The supply chain has still got dislocations globally and here in the U .S. This is Bloomberg Markets with Paul Sweeney and Matt Miller on Bloomberg Radio. All right. Coming up in this hour, we're going to talk to cruising business. The CEO of Viking Cruise is going to join us via Zoom, so that'll be very cool. "The lineup as iPhone 13 mini, though Mac rumors figures it will be along at some point, since Apple is selling that. And it's European refurbished stores. As for what you get, Mac rumors says refurbished iPhones from Apple are unlocked and can be used with any carrier Apple outfits all refurbished iPhone models with new batteries, outer shells, and a fresh USB-C to lightning cable. So they are essentially identical to new in the box iPhones. The gun with the same one year warranty as a new iPhone, according to the report. Buyers can also purchase extended coverage through AppleCare plus, even on the old days. Apple will start selling something like an AirTag competitor today. Like an airtight competitor, though not exactly, according to a piece from Mac rumors, the Cupertino companies online store will start selling chipotle's card spot for wallets today. Tuesday, the 14th of March. Just like AirTag, the piece says chipotle's offering allows users to easily track the location of a wallet in the items tab of the find my app on the iPhone iPad and Mac. Sounds like an AirTag and function, though not in form. As the four wallets indicates my rumor says that chipotle card spot is a card shaped item tracker designed for use with wallets. Apple doesn't have an AirTag made for wallets, which makes sense since everything Apple does with iPhone is trying to eliminate the wallet. Apple's AirTag is a circular device. Funny enough chipotle also sells the circular item tracker. Called the chipotle one spot. Apple will not be selling that in its online store.

"You can officially call smartphone sales a two horse race as far as counterpoint research is concerned. The one horse is running away with it. In a release issued Tuesday, the market tracker said that iPhone took 8 of the top ten bestselling smartphone spots on the planet in 2022. The other two were made by Samsung. Surprises from the release, iPhone 13 was the bestselling smartphone for 2022. iPhone 13 pro max was the second bestselling smartphone of 2022, marking the first time a pro max model drove more volume than the pro and base models. Despite its late in the year introduction, serious production issues and a general lack of availability, iPhone 14 pro max was the third bestselling smartphone of 2022 by counterpoints reckoning. 2020 ones iPhone 12 took 6th place on the 2022 best sellers list. It was the oldest phone to make the top ten. And for those who insist on calling iPhone SE a failure, the 2022 edition was the 9th bestselling smartphone on the planet, according to counterpoint count. Updates on Tuesday for developers and musicians. For the developers, a new round of betas, Apple insider posted a couple of pertinent pieces on Tuesday, one pointed out that the third betas of iOS, iPadOS, and tvOS 16.4 as well as watchOS 9.4 were available to the dev types. The other said the same for the third beta of macOS Ventura, 13.3. As for the musicians, if you're a garage band in, there's a security update for you. Another piece from Apple cider says the Cupertino company released GarageBand 10.48 for Mac on Tuesday. Well, we know what a security focused. That focus is kind of blurry. Apple's release node simply save the update provides important security fixes and is recommended for all users according to the report. It is award season here there. And everywhere, while we in the states tend to think of awards as a Hollywood thing, the UK and Europe like doling out trophies as well. A couple of pieces from Apple and cider have a few Apple TV plus titles up for a few awards in the UK and Ireland. In the UK, the site says the series slow horses and bad sisters are up for a royal television society program award. Yes. And award. The two titles are competing in the writer, drama category, Sharon horgan is upper bad sisters while Will Smith, not that one is up for the spy drama. Making the hop over to Ireland. We find the

"Compare an app's performance with others in the same category business model and download volume to ensure relevant comparisons. Of course, it is Apple, so privacy is key. The piece has the company telling developers that using industry leading differential privacy techniques, peer group, benchmarks provide relevant and actionable insights all while keeping the performance of individual apps private. Developers wanting more info can find it on apple's developer site. Your gently used Apple kit may be worth more than it was yesterday, though, not the day before. Mac rumors as Apple has up the maximum trade and value on select iPhones, iPads, and Macs, most iPhones on the Mac rumors list saw no change, though potential trade and values did take up for the iPhone 13 pro, iPhone 12 pro max, and blasting in from the past. iPhone 7 plus. iPad air and iPad both their possible trade and values rise most marks saw their trade in potential go up. The one the iMac pro actually saw its potential drop a bit. Most eligible Apple watches also saw their potential trade in values increase according to the report. Worth noting, while the trade ends are higher than they were recently, they're not as high as they once were, Mac rumors points out that many of the prices are still lower than the 2022 prices as Apple decreased trade and values back in January. You can see the complete list of trade in values, including for gear from competing manufacturers on Apple site, you can find that at Apple dot com slash shop slash trade hyphen. In Apple, give it more and Apple take it more to a piece from Apple insiders as the Cupertino company has raised the price for battery replacements on out of warranty iPhones and Macs. According to the report, an out of warranty battery replacement for iPhones older than iPhone 14 has gone up by 20 bucks. The same service for a MacBook Air is $30 higher for a MacBook and a MacBook Pro, the cost is $50 higher. Prices remain unchanged for iPad out of warranty battery replacement, according to the report.

"Apple developers can now get their hands on the next round of OS betas. Apple insider around a couple of pieces Tuesday, one saying the group had access to the second developer betas of iOS, iPadOS, and tvOS 16.4. As well as watchOS 9.4. The other said the same. And the second beta of macOS Ventura, 13.3. Clues of a couple of upcoming features in the developer betas. Well, one returning and one upcoming may be making its way back to us, babe, page turning animation in Apple books. I stopped reading books on my iPad so long ago. I didn't realize this skeuomorphic feature was gone. Having missed the chance to miss it, a piece from Mac rumors as the second beta of iOS 16.4 reintroduces an option for page turning animation that apparently only went away with iOS 16. It was replaced by a simpler slide animation, people missed it though, so here we go again. As for the other clue, fool me once, shame on you. Fool me again after over a year. Well, this separate piece from Mac rumors points to signs of life for Apple music, classical. Quick recap, Apple bought the classical music streaming service prime phonic back in 2021 and silenced the service almost immediately, but it pledged to replace it with a new service in 2022, it also gave prime phonics, subscribers, 6 months of Apple music at no cost, leading many to expect a prime phonic replacement within half a year. Well over a year later, still nothing. Now, maybe something. The Mac rumors piece says code and the iOS 16.4 developer beta actually mentions Apple music classical line in the music kit framework reportedly reads two listen in Apple music classical, you'll need to install Apple music. Maybe something may be nothing, Mac rumor says there was no sign of an actual Apple music classical app in the iOS 16.4 beta and finally today the next Apple watch activity challenge is on the schedule. And it's only a week away. 9 to 5 max has the Cupertino company has one plan to mark international women's day, the piece

"Get some new cool products from our Friends in Cupertino, California that would be Apple. I think they might even be bringing out a new iPhone. I can't recall. I still have an iPhone 11 and it does just fine. All right, let's bring in Bloomberg intelligence senior analyst on our rock. I understand apple's coming out with a new phone, do I care? Do investors care? What's the latest? So the best way to think about is it really matters that you're going to rush out and get the latest and the brightest. But this is not the latest in the brightest. This is just a series of smaller upgrade cycle, which is the iPhone 14. The form factor would be very similar to the 13. So for people like me who like to rush out and get the phones immediately as a new one comes out, I'm not going to be doing it this year, but for the normal world who's probably on ten, 9, 11, maybe. They may upgrade it. So our match says it's not going to be a little mover. Frankly, this year. So are they counting on it to be? And if there is strong demand, can they actually meet it? So the way the way we model this Alex is that Apple has right now and install base of about 800 million phones across the world. Which means and these are the ones with cellular plants. And if you were to say that the average life is about 3.6 years that means even without enticing new users, they're going to sell about 220 million units 22 million units every year without any issues. Now, if the economic activity around the world is not very good, then what people may push out 6 months, 12 months. But sooner or later, they will upgrade it. So from our side that we think that the next year is going to be when people rush to go into the 14. Now as far as the supply is concerned of parts, which has been a very big problem for Apple in the past year. So far, we have heard that things are okay. We are back on schedule for almost all of our products at this point. All right, I don't know if you've got a great chart in your research report, just kind of showing where apple gets its revenue from 43% come from China and Europe. Both of those regions very unreliable having some real tough economic situations where they're China's locking down. It's country every other day and you're stealing with a war and all the economic uncertainty there. What's the risk? So that's where we think that this is not going to add a monument to a number of new units to apple's installed base. We may still get a little bump because the pro models or the new iPhones usually come at a higher price tag. So even if you are a little short on units, you can make it up on the pricing part of it, which is why we think the iPhone sales growth for next year next to a month is not going to be more than 2% or so because of the reason that you suggested is both Greater China and Europe account for 43% of total sales for Apple. And then to the supply chain point, how is this supply chain for Apple? I know you said it wasn't going to be a huge move or anything unnecessarily this upgrade. But if there was the demand could Apple actually meet it and where are still the brakes in their armor on that? How are they going to manage that going forward? So one of the things that we have talked about is apple is extremely dependent on China for almost all their assembly. In a nearly 100% of the phones are assembled there. So any problems in China because of COVID lockdowns or any other issues. It has a direct impact on Apple, and it's revenue recognition. But as I said, last time we were very encouraged when Apple said, listen, things have opened up for them. And they don't see any problem going in. Now, longer term, we think Apple leads to diversify away from China into newer area, newer regions, whether that be Vietnam, Mexico, India, anywhere where they can get parts and assembly done if for some reason they can't get it out of China. So I'm just thinking about is it too early to start thinking about the iPhone 15? Is that because I've heard some folks say that's really where we're going to see something new maybe. Yeah, we think that's going to be the big kiss. Now Andy, you know, the surprise factor is going to be whether they do affordable phone at that point or not. Samsung is already out with one and it's what would be an affordable phone. Maybe like 300. Affordable and I was like, when did Apple been affordable? No, no, no, no. I personally don't like having a little line in my phone in between. It can be folded, but to be honest, if you look at the Samsung ads, it is really catching up and our last conversation with IDC. They say that they're going to do a separate segment on foldable phones going forward. So that could be the big factor. Obviously, the phone will look completely different than what we have right now. Those are the times when people wait to get upgraded. Some for example, I was waiting to get a new completely new shape of a phone at that time. And that really we think is going to bump up the iPhone revenue somewhere in the 79% range because of both an increase in ownership as well as the price points. And I know I'm harping on this and I don't mean to, but when you talked about the supply chain and how they get so much of their supply and the phones made in China, if they have to onshore or reshare it. Does that change their margin profile for stuff? Yeah, first it will change the margin profile by a huge amount. Second thing, it's actually not even physically possible to do that because of the number of people required to do it. I think Foxconn has over one and a half million people working in their factories at this point. So that's the second thing. We think the only way they could onshore Dax to a developed country where you don't have to pay that much higher. Wages would be automation and robotics. That's the only way when a robot is assembling the phone, you really don't need humans to do it. I don't think we had any more close to that at this point. Really great stuff. Love talking to you. Thank you so much, Anna, I brought out boomer intelligence, a senior analyst. From Apple now to Amazon, Amazon is pouring tons of money into their streaming platform. If you're a sports nerd, you got NFL if you're a me nerd, you got Lord of the Rings. How much will they actually be able to spend on it? Can they surpass Disney and Netflix? Want to bring in a Bloomberg intelligence analyst Gita ragana, how much money are we talking about? I mean, I look at The Lord of the Rings trailer, 'cause like I said, I'm a nerd. I mean, they look really good. I mean, I'm thinking how much money they shelled out for that kind of stuff. Okay, get this. This is the most expensive show ever made. They spend about $500 million in production costs and 250 million for the rights. So we're looking at upwards of 700 million just for the first season. Oh my gosh. Is that going to pay off for them? That's the hope. So this is really, I think, coming at such a pivotal time in streaming because you have everybody else kind of freely pulling back and then you have Amazon kind of coming out all guns blazing. And they've made a lot of very interesting bets throughout this year. So they

design new colors and a speedier M two processor from the homegrown chip line I've been back technology anchor and the Chang has more We're here at Apple headquarters in Cupertino California where WWDC the worldwide developers conference was held in person for the first time in three years And while this event is normally mostly about the software today we got some big hardware updates as well Apple unveiled the new M two chip that will define the next generation of Apple computing this chip is now in two new devices a MacBook Pro and a MacBook Air which we saw here in person We also did get a host of software updates for the Mac for the iPad iPhone home and car The iPad coming closer looking a lot more like a laptop the iPhone one of my favorite updates the ability to unsend and edit things being held in Apple wallets so you don't have to carry it around We didn't get that big AR VR reveal that some people were hoping for but as always Apple likes us to keep waiting for that one more thing Emily Chang Bloomberg Cupertino California It's all about the incremental advances Now what do you do when perhaps you're a bit unsure you want to go through with a deal while this is Elon Musk creating an audit trail of complaints He's filed with the SEC that Twitter of course he's bidding for Twitter isn't he The Twitter is thwarting his information rights Now this view is the idea that he's going to step back from doing this deal with Twitter And it's all about bot gate isn't it Musk reckons that Twitter have got to prove to him that less than 5% of their users are bots He reckons it's 20% Twitter dropped by 1.49% on the clothesline Down 5.5% at one juncture I love what BI have done They've run the numbers They say look at $44 billion it gives the enterprise value per "Talking with the secretary we get home and consider it We do not impose any of those tariffs that are imposed by the last administration in order to configuration That wasn't President Biden and his Asia tour discussing the tariffs on Chinese goods over in Tokyo during that tour And it really speaks to this moment Here we are in Davos Tom keen and myself Looking to what is next when it comes to supply chains in particular especially with some of these areas Is it boring I don't think so I need more Actually not even a year ago Like three years ago but now it's front and center To me it's much more about technology and the lead America has Do we maintain that Well aren't they part and parcel of the same thing though with the chips They're up here in our modeling my hair Like the guy and what was the car movie you know Back to the Future whatever This is great That's what we're doing Let us continue now And this is really important Every tech company in America has a story a past You know heal it you know Packard They had a garage and there was a guy named jobs and Wozniak and they did whatever they did up in Cupertino What's important is there was Franklin and Tony He was the chief scientist at Qualcomm and he was the heart and soul of the Qualcomm difference In San Diego they have done things differently forever and they've prospered where others have stumbled including the giant Intel Cristiano man joins us right now their chief executive officer How ginormous was Intel the day you walked in the door Well Intel has been an incredible company as they built what is today you know the PC But Qualcomm stories a little different Welcome story it's a company that actually I was focused on building mobile communications and creating the processing technology that allow you to have a computer in the palm of your hands and that's our most loved device today the smartphone that's what we do You won going niche Is there a risk to moving away from niche No what's happening to Qualcomm right now And that's one of the greatest opportunities in our history which is the mobile technology scales incredible Well if you think of a smartphone today it's maintained largest development platform But with the smartphone really is is an advanced computational device that is connected And when we look at digital transformation that is happening across every enterprise we see demand for technology and other industry That's what's happened to the company The company continued to be the company driving the pace of innovation in mobile communications But the automobile is becoming a connected computer on wheels We're growing to the automobile space and then every other industry as they digitally transform You fend it off an acquisition pitch from Broadcom this morning It's reported that Broadcom and VMware are in talks that Broadcom is going to acquire VMware Do you expect this to be the future That in order to have scale and sustenance you need to consolidate And do you see that really being the future What could It's really for Broadcom to comment but the way I look bro comes become a more of a software company And with some of the acquisitions they made in the past and I think VMware is a softer company We're going to the different direction I think we will continue to be a semiconductor company focus in the growth that we have in this industry especially at the edge and we continue to see not consolidation but conversions of all those opportunities How much are you trying to move away from relying on one region on Taiwan for example or some of the other major semiconductor producers as you focus on the hardware Please that's a great topic of conversation I think we what we saw of the past couple of years I think globally if there is a if there is a silver lining we saw this in my conductors are important And as chips are going in pretty much everything Even as we saw the shortage of my conductor people were buying more goods than services and their chips and everything Plus what's happening in the future We need the reliable supply chain So Qualcomm we have done a better than some of our peers because we have been diversified since the very beginning As an example we are very well balanced between Taiwan and South Korea with Samsung We also have been using chips from global foundries and 20% of our chip spends exactly coming from manufacturing in the United States And I think as a general rule as we think of the importance of semiconductors for the future of our economy I think we need to have a geographically diversified and resilient supply chain But can America participate in that given the massive labor arbitrage or is that a discussion of 20 years ago I think the discussion from the past What's really happening in semiconductor manufacturing is not an issue of labor It's an issue of scale But if you look with the United States is doing it's part of you seeka in the U.S. chips act We'll see if it gets approved by the House The Europeans actually moving with a very similar legislation called the EU chips act the Koreans talking about the Korea chips acts just if you look at the United States alone $52 billion the Europeans about $43 billion that is about creating incentives for manufacturing to be a built in the United States of Europe And I think it's possible The reason I think it's possible The semiconductor consumption is going to double in the next 5 years So there's opportunity to build in different places What should Apple do with all that cash in the other apples out there that generate free cash flow every 90 days to choke a horse You're a competitor You're a friend You're an enemy You removed But at the same time you have to be curious about where all that cash is going to end up Well today we're supplier of Apple We provide chips today iPhones But at the end of the day when we think about where most of our future is it's really to focus on building.

"You're with us. For this holiday edition of Bloomberg Daybreak. The markets are closed for the Labor Day holiday. Let's continue our conversation on Tech. Now, Wedbush analyst Dan Ives is back with us. And then we want to turn to two of the biggest mega cap names you cover Microsoft and Apple. For Microsoft. It's really been all about the cloud, hasn't it? It's been a cloud transformation story. It's It's really unlike anything that I've seen intact, called the last 20. Plus years covering these stocks. Wouldn't Nadella has done a Microsoft is really turn the company around. And you've seen massive re rating of the stock. And this is a trillion dollar market opportunity where they're narrowing that sort of lead that Amazon had in cloud and you're seeing in the growth numbers, and that's why we believe this is a stock that continues to move higher. It's just been a massive renaissance to growth in Redmond for Microsoft. How does the return to work story affect Microsoft? Whether it comes to cloud or its office software suite? Yes, I think it's been a bit Almost quote him. This number may be thrown in the wrong bucket setting many of you come and add of the Dark stage of the pandemic. The Microsoft as a pull forward growth story, and you start to see the stock almost on a treadmill but totally happens since, and we've seen it play out the last few quarters, and I believe it's going to continue playing on 2022. This cloud stories only a third of the way through from Microsoft. And even though there was obviously some pull forward, you're also you're actually seeing what the digital transformation stories Expand scale and school that's foolish for azure and also is bullish for office 3 65. They're also adding a price increase in the subscription side, which we thing was long overdue that adds another $5 billion talent. Microsoft Right now. I mean, they continue just been a massive position and strength and that's why the stock continues to move higher because when you look on the other side of this in terms of cloud, they continue to really be the share winner. So do you see Microsoft and azure taking cloud share in the market away from the big elephant in the room in this market, Amazon and Amazon Web services. Yeah, and clearly what jazzy And of course basis do with Amazon really changed. The industry that you could argue is really changed the nature of computing power. But Microsoft caught up significantly and I think it's really started become a bit of a two horse race. But you have also seen Google and IBM come up recently as well in terms of showing strength. And this is not just one winner to Raj and Kara is going to lift a bunch of boats here in terms of the trillions being spent. But I do believe in terms of narrowing the gap. First Amazon that cross town rival in the two or six area, too. They've done a great job, and that's something it's criminals to be a ways er, focus on this, especially with jazzy now not just focus on AWS, but of course, running the whole company as CEO taken over for visas can be missed The Puget Sound just a little bit there, Dan. Thanks for that. Finally want to turn to apple. You know, over the last decade of Tim Cook's leadership, it seems like his imprint on the company just doesn't stop. He's had the Golden touch, you know, move when you think about the shoes. That he had a feel of jobs. It was really something and think many viewed. It was almost going to be a massive uphill, bad on what cooks done between the innovation, the upgrade cycle that we've seen with iPhones super cycle playing out. Five g. But also navigating the China issue. I mean, you look at this U. S. China cold Tech War. I mean, Apple is really sort of been the poster child caught in the middle of both from a supply perspective. Funeral iPhone production out of China Those are demands about 20% in demand, yet it's with flying colors that they've come through. And that's why we believe as we go into 2022. This has potential be a $3 trillion mark cap. This super cycle continues to play out. Services. The modernization, of course, is regulatory risk that we continue seeing Big tech. But what we're seeing with Apple right now is really remarkable in terms of what we've seen a lot of that his credit to cook for everything he's done in Cupertino, when you talk about the idea of a $3 trillion market cap, even just a few months down the line doesn't that just sort of make the target on Apple's back when it comes to the threat of regulation, even that much bigger? Clearly, I mean, we've even seen him with Korea and where it started on from the regulatory going after fees for Apple and Google, and you're going to see more and more scrutiny within the Beltway as well as Brussels, and I think part of it is coming out of pandemic strong, gotten stronger and big tech. I think you will start to see some regulatory focus. The question is going to be with the lack of consensus in D. C. Is it just finds or regulatory changes? And I think right now, as long as there is a lack of consensus, the streets going to interpret that is sort of a bullish signal. But especially when you have things that the epic lawsuit and other More and more scrutiny of Apple's APP store. Not continues to be the crown jewel par. That $70 billion a year. Services business. Thanks for this, Dan. Great talking check with you, as always. Look at your apps and you check all your pure missions by speaking of apps. You probably have a ton of apps on your phone that she never even used. You downloaded a months. You fired him up a few times. Just remove them already. I mean, you don't know what kind of data is collecting android phones. They don't have this native feature like the iPhone is, but they do have a third party attitude can use called access dots. That shows you when the phone's mic and camera are in use, And we've got more information about both, of course, over recommended dot com and in just a few moments, I want you to set up your account as if you were going to be hacked. And before we get to that, Stephen In Saginaw, Michigan. Hi there, Stephen. Kim. Hello. Thank you very much for taking my car. Oh, you betcha. How can I? How can I lend a hand? Well can my wife and I are at a point that parental careers here where our daughters entering high school and we are considering purchasing her her first smartphone. Wait, Whoa, wait. Well, really honest, honest. How did you get away with that? Um, well, it was tough. Let me tell you, um many young people in grade school and junior high have headphones for many years, Right? Also, it was tough, Okay? It was tough. Um, but we made it right. But now entering high school, you know her teachers are using These devices for whatever reasons in their classes and so forth. Um, so we're considering, um, purchasing your one and, you know, eventually, we knew, you know, technology is something you can't avoid forever and to be successful, right? You need to So we're looking for, um, some some sort of parental controls to put on the phone. Um, I've done some research and I've seen something that seems some negative things in certain apps and so forth, So I wanted to contact you and Ask your opinion and What you would recommend if you had any ideas on what we could do. Well, you know, it's a common question. I have to tell you when this happens in my family, everybody comes to me, right? It's like, okay. What do I do now? And you've got all kinds of options, right? I mean anything from the good old standard like net nanny. You got studio You got bark. You can put a spying program on there and All across the board. Um, but I'll tell you what I'm really impressed with and it and it has taken them since 2007 to perfect it. I mean, and it's but I think it's finally finally here. Is that Apple has has has done it. Okay, They have given decent parental controls For once on an iPhone and IOS and where you can keep track of the usage. You can set screen time limits. You can Take time away. There's something called downtime. You can choose Which apps that they use. You can make sure that she doesn't download any other apps. You can decide who they can talk to. You can make sure that what they see as appropriate, you can create app limits. So you know what's going to happen is that she's gonna want tiktok or Snapchat. You know that, Okay? Yes, Absolutely. So you can you know you can set it up so that this way she can only use it for certain times of the day or just maybe 15 minutes a day or whatever it may be. But what I like about it is that it's built into the operating system, so we're not putting a third party on it where somebody can get around it right, so so and it's but it's taken them this long to do it. Right. I mean, think about that. Since 2000 and seven We've been clamoring for parental controls on an iPhone. Okay, well, right, And now it's finally here. And I would feel safe and recommending to you that you get your daughter iPhone s e. Whatever it may be. Don't buy it this week. Wait until if you can Wait until after September. 13th 14th And the reason why is that there's going to be new iPhones that are announced. So nice. So every time that new iPhones come out is that the older ones get like a 17 to 23% drop in price, So if you can hold off just two more weeks. They then you'll be able to get, you know, get her an iPhone 12 instead of the 13. And then she'll, you know, with little phone. She shouldn't have big hands. And you know so all that. You know all that stuff that you take into consideration. And but And then in addition to that, uh, you know you guys are if you're on iPhones and you have find my friends. So you can see exactly where she is. I mean, it's just It's just It's just built all into it right now. Now, uh, if you're an android, Are you on Android? No, We are my phone. Okay. Good. Okay. Say if you're on android, we don't have that. That's not a possibility. So that's where we That's where we're going to start looking at third party s. So if you go to apple dot com slash family Is that's where you'll see all the parental controls that are built into the OS. You know, they don't really promote this. They really should. Um And I know somebody right now and saying you're just talking about apple because their response to your show, Okay. I wish they were response. Er, I think that they should be responsible. If you know anybody in Cupertino. Send them my way. Please. I'd love to have him as a sponsor, you know? But if you're on Android view, that's where you have to look at some of those third party. There's third party applications that as you said, there's a lot of pluses and minuses and it works with one version of Android doesn't work so well with the next version that comes out and it's just all nicely integrated tightly bound right into the operating system right now, which You know it took him a long time to get to that. An Apple Ad-pocalypse For Everyone?

"You know about those changes to ad tracking that apple is going to flip the switch on on ios. Soon you know how facebook has said this will hurt small businesses and also them quite directly. They've also admitted. Well as this ad pacalypse creeps ever closer. There is increasing chatter about how big this move might actually be for basically everyone let me hit some of the most recent takes for you i. What prompted me to lead with this. Today is that in their earnings last night. Snap had to warn that. The coming changes by apple to idea a could have a materially adverse effect on their business and it wasn't just snap either unity also came out and said idea changes will hit the pocketbooks of all mobile game developers quoting cnbc. Unity software said in its earnings report. That the changes will affect the way mobile game developers get and quote how they optimize lifetime. Customer value and quote although it's difficult to estimate our guidance assumes idea changes begin in the spring and will reduce revenue by thirty million dollars or three percent of revenue in two thousand twenty one. The company wrote in prepared remarks for its q. Four earnings report snap chief financial officer derek. Anderson said the apple changes would present a risk of interruption to demand after their implemented quote. It is not clear yet. What the longer term impact of those changes may be for the top line momentum of our business and this may not be clear until several months or more after the changes are implemented. He said quote so coincident with that. I know that this is long. Reads day but i encourage you to check out ben. Thompson's free article from strategically this week because it is the most sober and i opening look at this situation that i've seen anywhere thompson did a qna with mobile marketing analyst. Eric su firt and he had some interesting things to say about. Apple's true motivations and all of this and how these changes could ripple out to affect not only game developers but things like chiappa fi and the smaller businesses on that platform. I highly highly recommend. You read the whole thing. But i'm going to quote two parts for you first up. This is ben quote the thing that is always kind of weird to me about this. Is i think people underestimate and frankly i think apple underestimates the degree to which apple's growth in services revenue growth in. The app store is because of facebook and that facebook and apple have had this very symbiotic relationship. facebook has done. All of apple's dirty work and apple has harvested thirty percent on the back end just by virtue of owning the app store. The question i have is. Is it possible. That apple is shooting themselves in the foot here and their services revenue actually takes a meaningful hit because they've destroyed the engine driving it and they didn't even realize it because they actually didn't understand facebook's role in this and then this is eric's answer quote. I don't think so. I think apple very much recognizes the role that it plays in the app ecosystem which is the distribution engine for apps. And i think that's what apple doesn't like. I think apple sees that the app store has basically become irrelevant as a point of content discovery. It's basically this kind of frictional annoying moment between clicking an ad and installing an app almost all discovery happens via ads or word of mouth. And i think what apple is doing in this in recognizing the power that facebook has in terms of influencing which apps become big which apps are popular. How people are using their iphones. Essentially in recognizing that apple is trying to regain control of that because if apple cripples advertising which is doing mobile advertising this is all happening within the context of all this stuff. That's happening on the browser which we don't need to go down that rabbit hole but apple has been the instigator of all of that too if apple cripples mobile advertising than the app store becomes the primary discovery point for apps again and apple decides how people use our iphones apple decides which are the most popular. And by the way. That's a position that apple used to occupy twenty twelve twenty. Thirteen apple was kingmaker. If you've got featured your company valuation might increase by one hundred million dollars it was really important to make that pilgrimage to apple. Go to cupertino and beg for featuring please feature as please give us the headline featuring because that would make such a big difference to our company then in that way apple got to influence. What kind of apps made and how you made them. So my sense here is that apple wants to regain that control and quote and then from further down in the piece. This is ben again. The great thing from google's perspective is they get to copy everything. Apple does which completely benefits them because apple wants to kill cookies. Google's like that's fine. We have the browser. We have the app store and we're justified in doing blatantly anti-competitive things because we're just copying apple. The apple. google duopoly is really ruling. Everything and this is eric's response. Yeah google silence on this issue has been really intriguing. Because i think they've got to feel like a little bit stuck. It's like well okay. We're going to slow copy apple on any privacy initiative. It does because we don't want to allow apple to create a competitive advantage around being seen as the privacy centric mobile platform but at the same time they run an ad network so day can't come out and demonize targeted advertising. Because well that's how they make some substantial portion of their money. Ben interjects here. They're being sued for antitrust. And this is so blatantly. Anti-competitive and eric responds right exactly. They've got a fine line to walk. And i think they've you to a very shrewd approach. Which just like you said. Kind of copy. What apple is doing but doing it in a way that is not a full manifestation of that and quote again read. The whole thing cannot recommend it highly enough are we all of us in the tech ecosystem facing an ad pacalypse
