"It was just a very revolutionary time. Right and george was talking about all this stuff to junk who shot and other guys solid dad you talk about all these these revolutionaries from germany and russia and all i couldn't even pronounce the name have the words in the book's he won't be to read so i take the book back and i look and i said well i can't understand what's going on this book. We say take the russia out of it. The laws said the california edited police over here in long beach in it and basically you notice it's the same thing things going on in the different place so that where it was a lot easier for me to understand. Sin jackson and other guys at solid dad were conducting political education classes. I on the sly and then out in the open and he was really being like a conduit like bringing all these revolutionary ideas into the prison. Yeah i mean. He wanted to wake up in their right show him. That their incarceration wasn't an accident. Costa jackson you couldn't understand prison without understanding things like racism capitalism and bashes. Fascism destroys a sense of community among the lower classes and in the upper classes. They have great new inches. We have to status community interests of our home from the bottom. Who wasn't just in school. By george jackson in martial arts got drilled on everything he can't say i just read it and l. sabbatical ankle. Your 'cause we were all trying to educate ourselves post. Somebody's had been educated. Some been educated. Don't forget we come from them. Susan watson stuff and they weren't best goes in the world but We were just trying to be better people. When we came home the understand saying better blackstone we want to be asset to our communities when we went home. I believe in the commune. I deal of central city community and through the communes as feeling vacuums at the power of the governing elite and upper classes have left as he feeling these vacuums and give people something to hold something to define. He was too adamant about us having separation and that would make him be separated from this brother over here. They want to be this this over here. That wanted to be that you understand. So if he ever said that. I'm a bg f. You're not gonna listen to him if you are you. A blood musuem them. And i never heard him doing that. Solidarity is still the same thing as a people. We're supposed to be accountable for one another. We are not acting individually inside the prisons. Here we all together and We have perfect discipline. We have a rank and file. So that's a bit of the background. George jackson in what he believed. Now we've got to get into the complex and controversial story of what happened in san quentin fifty years ago. And we've caught on an ear hustling fran who has helped us before with san quinn history. The jazz bar by nineteen seventy tensions. In california's prisons were boiling over racial division. Between black incarcerated people and mostly white correctional officers often lead to violence nine guards and twenty four incarcerated. People were killed from nineteen. Seventy two nine thousand nine hundred. Seventy one in nineteen seventy in solid prison. Three black incarcerated people were shot to death in a racial riot thought to have been instigated by prison staff. A correctional officer was then killed apparently in retaliation a few days. Later george jackson and to incarcerated people were charged in connection with the murder of that. Ceo jackson and his co-defendants became known as the solid. Ed brothers there case became a rallying cry for leftist celebrities and intellectuals like marlon brando angela and noam chomsky later that year solid dad brother a collection of jackson's prison letters was published. It was a literary sensation. Jackson was becoming an international icon of the struggle of black freedom and revolution. The solid ad brothers were transferred from solid head to san quentin to be closer to the trial in san francisco in august of nineteen. Seventy george jackson's younger brother. Jonathan took hostages at the courthouse near san quentin in an apparent attempt force jackson's released from prison. Jonathan was shot and killed outside the courthouse by california corrections officers. A judge in two incarcerated people were also killed at san quentin the solid. Dad brothers were housed in the adjustment center. That's the prisons. Maximum security unit jackson. But it's in quinton before but the adjustment center is a completely different world and e every time i go inside saint quentin. I walked by that building. You know what's on the left and it's got that scary. Gothic font says adjustment center and man. You know serious stuff happens in there. Yeah is hella isolated if you go to. The c is the ramp. It's the black home once you and you go inside. Ac back in nineteen seventy one then tag anisim between convicts and ceo's was rough moon voters every time you know we sit there. Disturb feces and pissing cup netted sit over there with top on if two or three four five days when it comes slamming right in his face. You know what i mean. And then laura b. so mad they want to drag out after a while. They didn't never bring us out without handcuff. So we've just so on them that it didn't make no difference who you did a to now. We was all for one one for all it was twenty. Six was down on the bottom tier. And every one of donner was down in for some kind of attack murder of a gore wherein soon got out in general population at san quentin that george jackson was in. Ac insane loss to salute gerard. Trent junior was in san quentin. George jackson got there and he's back there now new york and i brought him into the studio crawls a closed fist. Above your head. He said trent had throat cancer. Which is why is voice. Sounds so strained. That's cool off. Could be released could was their punishment for doing that for saluting him. No coup.
