Employers aim for hybrid working after Covid-19 pandemic - How will it work?
"Exactly a year ago the pandemic forces all out of the office and our studios and sent us working from home. Well we were setting up our at home audio booths. A lot of other people around the world were setting up their at home offices and it soon became clear that we'd need some long term solutions for that not just laptop stacked on top of piles of books. So that's when we turn to our senior personal tech columnist to anna stern and some of you may remember. We had a regular segment with her on the task of working from home now a year later. Were hoping that our days of working remotely are numbered but even when we do reach the other side of the pandemic a slew of companies have announced that they aren't expecting employees to go back to work in the same way as in the pre pandemic days. The new buzzword is hybrid. But what does that mean exactly. Well who better to answer that question. Then of course joanna stern. She's back with us today. Joanna so great to have you here so good to be back all right so right now. It's me sellin my home studio you and your home office. But we're all excited to get some more real facetime in person you've been talking to a bunch of companies. What are they saying about this idea of hybrid work. What does that mean. They are all saying the word hybrid hybrid hybrid hybrid hybrid work. It means that you will work some time at home and time at the office and the analysts are saying that the brunt of people want this people want to work sundays at home. And there's a magic number. Two days i heard the number two to three days so many times in reporting this story everyone is saying we'll spend two to three days at the office or two to three days at home. You pick the number of days so that so bad fifty fifty give or take. Let's talk about what that's going to look like many of us work in open offices. How are those gonna change with this hybrid model so it definitely depends on your organization and how they plan to shake things up and move the spaces around but knowing that we might spend two to three days at home. It doesn't make sense for many of these companies to have permanent desk space for everybody. So that's why there are these new models of thinking about what the the office space will look like and go through. What i think are three ways. This could look at your company. One is same old right. Nothing changes you. Actually go back to your old desk. Maybe there's some more distance between you and your colleague that's nice you don't get the smell them smell bad anymore. It's great the other idea. This is number two which is becoming really popular because of that point that not. Everyone should have their own desk because not everyone's going every day. Is this idea. And i promise you. This is not my term in. It's horrible turam hot Hosking means that you don't have an assigned test you come in you get a new desk you leave you come in another day. You have a different desk and again it makes sense because not everyone is in on the same day. One of the people i spoke to for the story is the ceo of salesforce joanne. All saskia and she explained to me how they are moving to that model. Everyday you come in you find with your team if you want or you know wherever whoever you might be working with you grab a desk in there you go. And we have a crew that comes in at night and they reset the monitors and reset chairs reset standing desks. So the next day when you come in is completely clean completely sanitized. So we're already doing that will now. We're going to do that with most of our spaces and then the third one is really a big change and it's no desk. You have no desk. You're really just going to the office to collaborate with people to go to meetings and companies are doing. This dropbox is one of them. They are calling their their new spaces. Dropbox studios really call it in office anymore. And you just go in you have meetings you collaborate you bond with your colleagues and then you go home and you work from home most of the time. So let's talk about that working from home piece. We've all gotten pretty used to our at home. Setups how is this hybrid. Model going to change those. What are some of the new challenges. I think the big when we have to think about is that we're going to be bringing stuff back and forth and back and forth a lot laptops other. Techy wanted home. Or you want at. The office headphones microphones that kind of stuff. In some cases you won't bring it and you will have a situation at your office where you can keep some of it there but i think in some cases you really are going to want to drag that stuff back and forth because you might only have one of them or you like the thing that you use. Some companies are getting creative about how employees get the extra tech might need. Here's sales for ceo. Joanna subscale again. We provide any role that they need so they want an external keyboard they can have asked. They want mouse. They can have that they. Just get it out of the the vending machine. I need a keyboard and outcomes a keyboard. Did she say vending machines yes. She said vending machines and at salesforce. Unlike some other offices that we may work in. You don't get stale cookies or you. Don't get stale doritos. You've met computer peripherals and it's pretty simple. This is just a way for the it department not to be constantly responding to requests. That i need a new mouse or need a new headset. You're in the salesforce offices. They have vending machines. They're inside there. You go you swipe your card you get it and you don't pay for it. This is this is all free. Means like you're getting it from the department at another nice thing at salesforce to is that once you've gotten these peripherals they give you a cubby or locker to put your stuff in so you don't necessarily have to keep dragging back and forth your keyboard or your mouth your headset. You have it in your space at work. You got home. You have your home setup you come to work you grab your peripherals. You set them up. Got it okay. So that's the tech side of things but what about just communication. I mean we've been doing so much communication online. If some people are in the office some people are at home. How's that going to work. The biggest mistake you can make is thinking that you're going to go back to the office and you're not going to be video calling anymore. Don't think terry okay. And i spoke at length with the ceo of logitech about this name is bracket daryl and he knows a thing or two. About webcams impersonal. Webcams are going to continue to be important in enabling conference to superport. You've got Dynamic where it's hard to imagine going to the office for so many companies didn't have a lot of your neighbor rooms where you go by yourself. Do video call with few people do small group. It's hard to imagine video neighboring those rooms especially when it's so affordable. Obviously logitech is very excited about this because this is their business. Everyone has tried to buy a webcam from logitech in the last year. But other companies have said this to me to zoom. Told me this microsoft. Lots of companies webcams everywhere. Okay so we've talked about video calls but we're using technology for a lot of other communication that we would have done in person before right we've been using slack teams google products to collaborate. What's in store for us on that front. Yeah i mean you have to think about it as we're actually all remote workers now even when we're at the office because not everyone is going to be at the office with us. So that means we have to lean on things like slack and microsoft teams or whatever. Your company uses more to communicate because we're all going to be distributed and so slack in these companies are specifically trying to look at their products and change their products to help with this hybrid. Model slack is working on one feature. They told me about where you can send a video message to the entire team so instead of having to do constant video calls someone on your team can put out one short video clip to everyone in the in the channel and say something so everyone on the same page about it and again that cuts down on the friction of. Hey you said something in the office but the other person wasn't in the office and they missed what you said so. It's really important. The other thing that i'm excited about that they're coming out with is kind of like a audio drop in conference call thing that will let you create an audio call and have other other people jump in. I like to think of it as clubhouse but in slack google's doing a lot in this space to they've added some functionality to work space which includes all their collaboration tools like meat and doc slides etc. One feature. That i think is really important. Is this ability to set your status and let people know where you are ahead of. Google workspace aerosol. Tarot also gave me in scope on how they're planning to beef up. Google docs and this is something that we're going to be delivering this year and we started to introduce. How do you move from. The collaboration experienced made us famous. So the idea that we can all jump in and be the dueling curse into to say. Hey let's enrich that and go from like dueling pursers with names to faces and voices that live alongside the document. That's like a marriage of google meat and google docs right. Yeah i'm i'm pretty excited about it. I mean sometimes. I don't necessarily want my editor yelling at me. When he's editing a my script but at least you know everyone is right you. You know what. They're what they're working on and whether they are actually Looking at the documents. I think that's pretty cool. Said like a true boss. Qatari all right. So what about the home office side of things. How are our home. Office is going to be changing the going forward. I don't think they change much. I think if you've set up a really nice office you're going to keep working there and you're gonna wanna keep working there. Some of the companies and the large companies. I spoke to talked about continuing to make employees feel comfortable in their home offices which means nice stipend survived tech or furniture. Obviously the ceo of logitech is pretty excited that we're going to continue to improve our home
Lead and Discover Your Purpose from Your Job Dr. Michael Colburn - burst 12
"In my view. Productivity is the ability to make choices. That's the fundamental piece. Going back to stephen covey remember steven kevi. Gosh circle of so. So he said there's a circle of of of concern visual things. That's all the stuff that's going on in our world around us. You know it could be your job or just in in the world and some of the stuff there that you feel kind of difficult or are frustrated because there's a lot of stuff going on you can't do anything about right. Stephen also talked about. There's a smaller circle in there. It's called a circle of influence. That's the stuff that you care about to you that you can do something about so what i found. Because that's the first chapter my book. I find what happens when you find yourself in a situation where you can't do anything about it. Apparently where you feel like you can even make choices. So there's three fundamental questions. We have to ask. Not what is wrong. Why why do i feel so bad. I can't do anything. So what is it you care about. That's causing you this frustration. I care about my children. I care about success of the organization. I care about a whole bunch of stuff. Then the second question is a powerful question. So what can you do about that. J. people can always answer that question. I always say a small can is better than a big cannot. So then what happens is and i tell stories in my book about that and then the third question which is the most powerful question after that is of all the cans. What will i do. And i think the word will is powerful because that that is ownership and slow by going from the frustration to the can to the will you can. You can translate things into into action. And that's a powerful feeling. You have and what happens is when i do that because i get the same feelings. Everybody else when i do that it. It tends to remember that cubby circle it tends to make that circle of influence grow. Here's the thing about those three questions. And i loved these three questions and i hope people wrote these down and i'm going to review them again but i think one of the things that happens in these three questions that we dashed against cider circle of influence that first question. What do i care about. I think you've gotta get honest first of all with that and even if it sounds selfish you have got to be honest with you. Say you know what. I care about a care about me and what i want. And if that's i think it's you have to get down to that level of honesty being able to look at yourself. I mean that's what it is. What it is right. And so i mean we we. I think we have to. We have to be really honest with you if you're if you care about money and that's what you care about. Then that's what you care about. This isn't we're not talking about something. Bigger and magnanimous that is ethereal and out there. We're talking about just being. Okay what is it that you really care about. And then what can i do. I think this is a place where they gotta get on his too because they short side themselves so quickly because they immediately go well. There's nothing because they get their migdal gets hijacked in the middle of the brain their emotions take over and the go. There's nothing i could do nothing. I can do nothing. I'm stuck here right. That's not the question. The question is what can you do. Rate and people shot down. I have had clients coaching clients. Who you know. We'll say throw up their arms there. I don't know what to do anymore. And i'll say well what can you do. I can't do anything it's like. It's a reflex action. Well that's why the first questions important it have a real discussion about. What's really important to you. What you really care about. And and i really find that deep down people feel bad about ninety year old person deep down on people unless you have some really deep psychological problems right people can discover something beyond themselves and and what happens is the per- the person who says well only care about money. What they have is a very small universe around them right circle. Is it it off three feet from them. And and i'm not sure if someone is in that situation i can help them much At that point except to have them think through a had them question your own values right. So how does that make you
Trump rally-goers must agree they won't sue if they contract coronavirus
"York attendees of president trump some cubby rally in Tulsa Oklahoma must agree to not sue the campaign if they contract coronavirus rally goers are asked to RSVP to gain admission to the event and by registering they must agree to a disclaimer that states they acknowledge the inherent risk of exposure to covert nineteen exist in any public place where people are present the president's campaign officially announced plans on Wednesday for trump's first campaign rally since most of the country shut down to prevent the spread of the virus he will appear at the indoor venue the be okay center in Tulsa on July
The stigma around COVID can be as dangerous as the virus
"Every country in the world is grappling with the covert epidemic. Some much better than others. In many of those countries stigma around the disease plays a very important role in India. Stigma is directed at Muslims in Haiti at orphanages in Spain at Italians and in the US at asian-americans stigma related to disease his not new and in the US. It goes back hundreds of years. Those who are infected are considered to be part of an outside group and they have been blamed ostracized and often brutally attacked for simply getting sick. Geneva is in North Africa compared to other North African or African countries. We have one of the oldest population with a population of twelve million. To Nisha has one of the best healthcare systems in Africa with well trained health providers but few hospital beds and very few intensive care units so public health and testing need to play a large role in controlling the spread of Kovic. My name is Gibert BELKA KOREA. Young Damien continues. Yeah working For the Institute Jaber is concerned that the public response to co VID has turned into a blame game. We have fighting a virus year. We non fighting people what we seeing right now. The message about Kobe is more about foreign train. People that have the disease as bad people highlighting gators and saying hey the virus or the diseases coming from these neighborhoods. When people are scared it is human nature to want to blame others and create a narrative of outside bad people causing the problem. It is their fault. My family or my community would never have caused this problem by being portrayed as bad people are scared. That basically makes him hide. And we've seen that with other diseases that has to beg colossus or or HIV. Basically people don't WanNa get tested or portrayed as cubby positives in in their communities or in the neighborhoods but when people don't get tested it's hard to control the disease and we can't know about hot spots and we can't do contact racing and individual suffer as well. Jaber told me about one example. He found particularly upsetting burying. Gubbay positives agents or Ned evil. Some communities refuse to have burials in noticing. Theories scored It's it's it's human rights. I mean if it's done properly. It knows no risk. Stigma itself is like a virus. The fear that drives it is contagious. It's absolutely gear driven by giving the correct information. We can remove that fear. Remove that stigma and no the movie This virus from the comed- once we find a way to manage Kovic nineteen and we will. It would be too bad if we eliminate the virus but are left with the plague of stigma.
The Incredible Singing Tortoise
"The incredible singing tortoise once upon a time on a stormy afternoon Zane was hurrying home from school he had just found out it was his turn for show and tell on. Friday and his brain world with ideas of what to bring. He was so busy thinking that he forgot his coat in his cubby. The cold rain slipped over his hair down the back of his neck making him shiver can't wait to get home and dry off. He muttered. Maybe I'll even have a mug of cocoa. He turned to take a shortcut through the woods. Under the trees. The rain fell in a slower. Pit Pat but when the wind blew the branches shook and soaked him underfoot the mud sucked at his shoes with a wet slurping. Sounds maybe two cocoa's he grumbled then cocked. His head had he heard something. He froze listening to the gentle sounds of rain filtering through the forest finally from off in the woods. He heard a soft voice that bow. Scooby Doo Doo. Wow already indeed dining out but he do scuba. Zane heared into the trees. He in a forest really. It was just a strip of woods between a house and a bunch of condos. There wasn't space for anyone to be hiding. Not unless they were buried in the fallen leaves. Maybe somebody dropped their phone. He said thinking of the Joggers who always breezed by listening to music. Zane stepped off the path towards the singing. His feet squelching through the mud. Or maybe it's an old toy. He thought. Perfect for show Intel. He hunted around by his feet. Where is it? He said searching his arms and legs were soon soaked as he waded into the wet leaves. Come on play another song. Do I do as he knew that. Zane pushed aside another branch. Found not a phone but anomaly little tortoise the creature seem to smile up at him and then sang another bar. Zane fell back onto his but in the mud. What how he said you can sing. I can sing. The Tortoise said Zan's jaw dropped. And you can talk and I can talk. She agreed but I usually don't talking tortoise. Is that more impressive than a singing tortoise. Why she asked caulking her leathery head but it definitely is Zane. Said I'm Zine what's your name. Hi My name is Alicia Alicia. You have to come with me for show Intel this Friday show and tell no thank you. I don't like crowds. I'm really pretty shy. She said pulling her head back into her shell a little. You don't seem shy. Zane said he stood up and dusted himself off still staring at her amazed. Well said the Tortoise I see you walking home alone here every day so I figured I don't mind if you hear did did you like it. It was great. I had no idea. Zine said seriously. I thought that it was someone's phone playing like spotify or something in the mud a leash. The tortoise smiled. Well thank you. She said have a good day. She turned and started to walk back into the leaves. Wait no Zane said chasing after her. You're singing turtle you have to come with me. I need to show everyone for show and tell well. I'm a tortoise turtle leashes said and I'd really rather not show anyone else. It's kind of a private thing com on. He said you showed me. I need to show my sister. At least she's GonNa lose her mind. No thanks she said. I'll see you another time. No no Zane said holding up his hands wait here. He turned and ran the rest of the way home. He burst into his front door and skidded into the kitchen where his older sister was putting peanut butter on some crackers. Tayla he said scaring her so badly. The crackers went flying. You need to come see this. He clutched her by the wrist and started dragging her to the front door. Come on come on come on Zeno what she sputtered following him out the door. What are you doing? Where are we going saying my crackers? Just come on. It's worth it. I promise they got to the little strip of woods and stood in the middle of the path. The Rain Patter down and the mud-stained their sneakers. And why did you drag me out here Taylor asked wait? Just listen? They stood together in silence for a moment. Then a minute then to okay. I'm going back inside your own Weirdo. No come on Taylor turned and hurried away. Eager to be out of the rain. Zane watched her leave for a few minutes and then side turning to follow

All Nippon Airways Showcases New Seats
"Was that a vendetta. It was great. It was really great. It was right off brick lane in this event space which I had never been to before and they they had these sort of makeshift Goethe's wonderful pagodas you know as wonderful kind of arch ways that they have in Japan the they're usually read the gates thank you. That's the word I was looking for and in the middle of this space on a elevated platform they had a block of the four seats when they had many many many flight attendants in attendance to kind of brief you on how the seats work and the seats are oriented as a block for much like the Q. Sweets there facing each other okay the two seats and I was able to experience it they had the full power connected and the IFP say you could try it. It was very very very impressive. It was really really wide. CA's reminds me of the pictures of the Singapore Airlines that White Yeah if if not wider yeah yeah so you feel like you're in a sofa at home when you're sitting upright the whole thing isn't that why the Footwell tapers to allow for the other person's cubbies and cabinets that you have to your side as well. The screen is is huge crystal clear and the seat itself the padding which you see the as the seat is reclining. You can see how thick it is really really thick seat very very comfortable. The one thing I noticed that I sent to you immediately was if you sit straight and you recline the seat straight. There's no way that I could fit let alone somebody like you. It's it's very very short but then in all of the images the presages they have you can see the person sleeping at an angle and actually when I did that so I moved my head to the adjacent corner that my feet where plenty of runs so again like Singapore because Singapore I would unless I'm bulkhead but even I would usually sit in a diagonal would not sit up straight and the good thing since we're comparing that to that three hundred the old seat now is that he actually so reclines whereas the Singapore seats you had to stand up all aww yet to fold it. Oh that's good that's good what about the door is at high the doors High Yup and it and it comes across in like in the two sections that close together you felt very very private and secluded when you were in the even with a million people walking around you and a lot of noise oviously at an event it does oppose skies so the manufacturer is not the one from the queue sweet although there are of a billion ways to do a seat into fitted in dark ref at the end another day but the manufacturer is completely different and you had the chance to also meet the designer of the seat yes he was going to forget the name of the he built the Tokyo Auguin early this year and he also built the a a in Dundee as y'all which is an extraordinary building a very famous Japanese architect enables alludes because of course thank you yeah. He was very very nice very interested would speak to anybody not that you know that he would never wise but yeah he was he was proud of and he partnered with a London design agency to do and I must say that one of my criticisms of the previous was that it was very clinical lots of metal. Will we said that a lot of time and you know and that absolutely not the case anymore. They've kept however some of the blue color it kept the blue. It's it's much more understated understated it. It's it's an accent but it's it's beautifully done. It's very Japanese very a it's a very very strong seat. They're going to you really well with this what they didn't show or didn't have because it's rolling a little bit. Slower is the new first class yeah I said in the last ZIP is it that for me. It reminds me a little bit of the Swiss first-class which is very large cubicle elitest door. Were you able to even bits a bit like or none of the video playing and I was chatting to one of the cabin crew about it and she said that the news it has a forty three inch four K. screen TV. You'RE GONNA give you two and I said are you sure and then she showed me a brochure brochure of it and sure enough. I should never have huge the seat itself is is beautiful as well. It's lovely gray. They made saga job gets darker than the than the one in in business class which is often the case in Japan. If you cajoled they have darker colors I glass including the lounges compared to Business Glasgow Glasgow. Wow I mean holy cow. So are they not introducing because the reason you had that event was the two things they are opening the route with that seat now from London to two hundred but also I think it was celebrating may be used so that maybe I'm wrong. I'm not sure it was a thirty. That's rare anniversary running of the route. Yeah Yeah Okay so yeah. It was great. I met a few people that I've worked with a in the past who are really friendly. Johnny from the design air turns out he was there I didn't I didn't see him which is which is disappointing. I wish shame yeah cross pass but I think he he was as impressed as I was so it's a it's a great. I don't think you can go wrong in that route because a anna have a very good product obviously and so two gel so expensive however they are not but no one is no one is no no one no one is no one

I don't know your impression SARS seeing this Joe and and he is quite something that you don't see every day

"cubbies" Discussed on KDWN 720AM
"Onto Mikey had the marvelous. Twisting the night away. Now, what do we have now, Johnny? I'm not hearing you. Gotta make sure replied. Yep. No Danny here tomorrow. Nothing. Okay. So we'll we'll we'll get it have to have. If we have to have Johnny come out here to hit one of the mic over here. We'll have to do it. But that's what he does on Mondays. You'll find some great old Motown stuff and get it on there for us. And let us know the artist is in the song. So right now, you got Johnny. No. You don't know what happened? He's doing is more say more, so impressions jamming out to the music. Darren okay. Yeah. Say I was able to hear him. But he was talking me only. So we'll we'll get him out here who was who is at Johnny guitar me. Okay. Shorty long with function junction. Function at the junction. Okay. Gotta make sure you say that very slowly and get it. Right. All right. Good stuff. All right. Daniel Burke, baseball, your Cubbies. Central? I think's gonna be a lot of fun to be the toughest division. Are you convinced that Milwaukee's gonna regress because fish? Thanks for. Sure. Everything went their way last year. They wanna lot of one run games. And and he's thinking now, they're not gonna win as many I liked that. They did get the stock is, you know, and then bring him back for another year here. How about Ryan Braun? No. They were supposed to go up. I think and play Toronto. And he left his passport back in Wisconsin. He didn't have it. So he couldn't go. Yeah. I mean, Milwaukee's slowly becoming a very hated team in the city of Chicago. It was always it's always the little brothers though. Right walkie, overcoming Chicago. Right at the end was Brunei. And they're not letting you guys just go in there and swoop up all the tickets used to f- for the most part of the cubs fan still are getting there. He's getting there for sure. But yeah, I think the central is going to be the toughest division. The cardinals are stacking up. No doubt about that Milwaukee. Regression wise. I think there will. Will be a slight one. I can't imagine yelich carrying that team the way he did that whole season. I mean, he was nominated. There's no doubt that he won the MVP over bias toward the end of that season. Yeah. I think Milwaukee will be fighting for a wild card at the end of the year. I think it's gonna come down to the cardinals and cubs at the top of the central for me with the cubs. It's they got the same team as last year, but it's all about the injury bug. So Brandon moral was out for most of the year. The reliever you Darvish, of course, he was battling injuries throughout the whole year and Kris Bryant had the shoulder injury is well never really got to see the full team consistently throughout the year. This will be the year for the cubs knock on wood. If they knock on wood if they can stay healthy that they can do. So they still have all the same firepower to Pedro Strope reliever. He was saying just on Twitter. It's the same field. Same kind of team is twenty sixteen. There's no hangover now regression no injuries that are gonna keep them back this year. So I got a lot of hope for them. And of course, that's a little bites. But I truly think that they it's going to be the cardinals at the top. I think the cardinals in the cubs will both be making the playoffs. One of them are going to be leading the central though, what about my nets as far as in the east coast last year know Jacob degrom gets. The Cy Young only winds ten games. Syndergaard got banged up. I mean, that's the thing with the nets. We know the pitching's there. But do we have some hitting now? I mean is this Mets team that that maybe can challenge there in the east of Philadelphia? Of course, getting Bryce Harper. We know Washington still with that great pitching staff and still enough bats, we know the Marlins more than likely you're gonna struggle. But I'm just wondering where you are at as far as what about my Metropolitans? Yeah, I think the Mets will they'll progress a little bit this year. I mean Robinson. Now, he's going to be your main source offense or one of the main sources of authenticity. Least. I I don't think I mean, Todd Fraser he the guy who can be consistent two is what you're going to hope for and suspects in the outfield. He'll be doing well for you guys there too. As for playoffs. I still think you guys got a couple years ahead of you before you can really figure everything out with that team. But besides that. Yeah. Just a little bit of improvement nothing to get too excited about I don't think he can get much worse. Hopefully, hopefully, the pitchers garden to grab get some help on the offensive side. Are you hearing me or no? I think I would. Mike is. What happened here? So, you know, picking me up at all. Nope. Don't got you on my end. What about your hearing yourself only hearing myself right now?.

"And for your family so that if you're not already there hopefully someday you can reside in that land of critical mass well hero on money talk we have certainly seen a lot of activity in the stock market since we commenced our broadcast on super bowl sunday nineteen eighty six prices were far far lower when we first got underway back on super bowl sunday nineteen eighty six and it gets me to thinking about the power that companies have to protect investors shareholders against inflation and i was looking at some figures and i must say they are remarkable figures because they show how far things have come over the very long term and i went back to nineteen o eight and i picked that year because of prior to recently that was the last time that the cubbies had been world champs now they have subsequently one one more but back in nineteen oh eight that was the previous time and back in one thousand nine hundred eight where do you think the dow jones industrial average was hanging out you may be surprised to hear this but the number was sixty three back in nineteen oh eight back when the cubbies won that championship over a century ago the dow jones industrial average was hanging out at sixty three points yeah that's the same dow jones industrial average that traded over the twenty two thousand level remarkable appreciation but especially remarkable when you consider that as an investor you would have also received all of the dividends the cash dividends paid by all of the companies in the index and the average and so you would have been collecting probably an average of something in the area of three and a fraction percent annually if you go all the way back to nineteen o eight because dividends used to be way higher than they are these days so you would have collected all of that cash dividend income but you also would have had the appreciation and the average from sixty three back in nineteen oh wait all the way to well where it is now in the thousands so why is that the answer is because companies have the ability to protect shareholders from inflation by raising prices and that pricing power is exactly what happens take something like a very basic something.
