Fresh update on "crown heights" discussed on Len Berman and Michael Riedel in the Morning

"You're listening to When Berman and Michael Riedel in the morning I'm 17 somebody. Whoa are all right, So the left is telling us Don't have anyone over for Thanksgiving. So Andrew Cuomo slips and announces on a radio show that Oh, by the way, I'm having my 83 year old mother on I always got to rescind the invitation. But had he not been caught at that he would have. I'm sure had Mathilda over for Thanksgiving in San Francisco in California. You couldn't go into hair salons. But what is Nancy Pelosi do? She goes to air Salon gets a haircut, But no one else is allowed to do it. And you're not supposed to gather with people and not wear masks. And you're not supposed to go to restaurants in California. Well, what is Governor Newsome do Goes the French laundry with about 20 people not wearing a mask in eating so the hypocrisy folks on the left is it just makes the head's been and I wonder if his head is spinning as mine is this morning Governor David Paterson, former governor of New York. Good friend of this program is with us. Well, usually Thursdays, but it's Thanksgiving tomorrow, so he kindly agreed to join us here on Wednesday, and Governor Paterson. Is. Am I being too tough on these lefties? Don't you sense the hypocrisy? What's in their minds? Yeah, I think the Gavin Newsom gathering there were 13 people, not 20. But what I would say is that when you are in public service, you have to recognize that you'll be held. You're the first one that will be held to the standard that you actually set. So you know, it's uh Um, So many things happen that make your life so much different than the regular. You know, the regular people that you are governing that you start to think that your lifestyle is actually different and it isn't it. There's a rule. That you shouldn't be having people with Thanksgiving, then you should You know, you should stand by it. Let me ask you though. Do you lose touch? I mean, you know you were the governor. Do you lose lose touch? With just the way regular people live, If you you know, you get to live in a big house you don't have to pay for you've got people to do pretty much everything for you. You've got a staff. You've got the secret service people doing things you'd have to drive anything. Do you lose touch with people? The longer you're in that political bubble I think In my case, I could have lost touch with people in that respect, but I was criticized so much, and I always felt like things were no different than when I was in the state Senate. Let me kiss you took this, but but it isn't. It is a different lifestyle. Get in the sense that I had a childhood friend and I invited her to come up for the weekend to stay with me and my family. So she comes up and STI here is that I'm going to do the graduation. At hospital University, So she says to me, why do you invite me all the way up here? What do you do? You fly right back to where we lived to do the hospital. I'm not going to see you the whole weekend. I said no, I'm going to go to the Airport. It's an hour flight down. I'm going to speak for about 25 or 30 minutes an hour back up. It's about to happen and four hours and I'll be back and she just looked at me and I said, Yeah, for the next few years See me is kind of like a billionaire. There is a change in your life. It's just that you have to recognize the difference. Talking with the former governor, David Paterson. His new book, by the way, which I just needed to reading is great Called Black, Blind and in charge so little plug there for your book, which I think was a great read. Tell me. I know you're very friendly with David Dinkins. And of course he passed away this week at 93 Tell me something we may not know about him. Well, in all the interviews I heard yet today and I did a number of interviews, but this was never the part of the interview that they put on if you talk about the conditions in the city now And how bad they are The homelessness, the danger of riding the subway, the spiking of crime, and they people always say, boy, we This reminds us of the eighties and then they then the next sentence is always Yeah, this block here so bad. We haven't had anything going like this since Dinkins. Well, In fact, David Dinkins was never the mayor of the city of New York at any point in the eighties, he started in 1990. From 1985 to 1990 crimes spiked 63% under Mayor Koch was a friend of mine as well. But my point is that Dinkins somehow got associated with all the lawlessness that was going on then, when, in fact By his third year he had cut crime 25% and he left the state with a $500 million surplus. Which people when they go out of office. They walk unspent a lot of money, one Different programs that they think I rent this thing he didn't do that. And I think that if people would go back and and read history and look at the statistics that I just gave, they would realize that David Dinkins was blamed For the what was going one on 42nd Street and all of that kind of homeless problem where homeless people bothering you almost on every corner. This did not go on in his administration. Do you think though he mishandled the riots in Crown Heights? Should he have moved faster to tamp down those rights? Well, very interestingly had a conversation with police Commissioner Ray Kelly. And I commend you all that you will have him on to discuss this. He said that there were chief in the department who disregarded the actual orders to maintain peace. And for whatever reason, I thought that would be lettered better to let the community express itself. I don't know what that means when when people getting hurt and that Dinkins wound up Taking the blame the blame for it, but he said he himself Recognized that the police were not following the protocols that they should have. The other thing is that that was Michael. In my opinion if there's a devil And the devil was in Crown Heights that week. What happened very quickly is that there was a car accident. A, um uh, a limousine hit two kids. Kids lying in the street. They called an ambulance for the driver of the limousine. The crowd that gathered saw the ambulance. Take the Basically the injured but not seriously injured man from the ambulance. It was a private ambulance, and when they saw that they were enraged. Because they didn't realize that the ambulance had been called for him. The city ambulance came a few minutes later. But by then the crowded erupted, believing that the ambulance chose to leave the kid dying in the street than to take the gentleman that they took. And it was a completeness understanding, but it created in this city a couple years of real strife that we did not need. All right. All right. Governor, David Paterson. Always a sensible when it comes to history. Thanks, Governor. Have a good Thanksgiving. You're spending it with with your wife, or are you? Are you gonna inviting? You know your big family over? You're gonna keep it small. We've got about 30. People over. I'm not off. All right. What time should I What time you want me to get there? About 4. 30. Michael, I think we're gonna discuss your book over dinner as well. Oh, terrific, Singular sensation. The triumph of Broadway. Thanks, Governor. David Paterson. Now, 30 Now it's 32 32 people that you know me. I don't want to leave you out with 33 teeth. Thank you over. No, it's gonna be great. He's used to big gatherings. You know, all right up next, the Grammy nominations are out, and there were some pretty big snubs. And also who is going to replace Alex Trebek on jeopardy..

NYC's first African-American mayor, David Dinkins, has died

"New York City's only black Mayor, David Dinkins, has died. WCBS reporter Mac Rosenberg joins us live from City Hall. Michael David Dinkins like to refer to New York City is a gorgeous mosaic. The city's 106th and first African American mayor held a few titles before being elected in 1989. He was first Manhattan borough president, State assemblyman and city clerk before he upset three term incumbent Democrat Ed Koch in the primary and then narrowly defeated Rudy Giuliani in the general election, who would beat Dinkins four years later. Think it took over a city that was in trouble economically, and also saw racial tensions come to a head during his administration with the Crown Heights riots for which the state ultimately said Jenkins did not act quick enough. He later admitted regret for that. Former governor David Paterson said that Jenkins tried very hard to be the mayor of all the people. Civil rights activist Al Sharpton says that Dinkins made American politics more inclusive and progressive. Dinkins wife, Joyce died in October and the former mayor died last night at the age of
