"And head off to Crossville, Tennessee. David is with us on the phone. How you doing, David doing great. Rick. How about you doing wonderful Thanks so much. How can I help you today? Well, I'm a recently retired federal employee. Before I retired. You spoke with my wife about paying cash for our retirement home. You advocated not doing so And we took your advice. Okay. We're currently withdrawing the mortgage amount from a taxable mutual fund on a monthly basis. But we started wondering from from a tax standpoint in the long run. Would it make more sense to start withdrawing that amount for my my TSP instead of the mutual fund? Since I'm retired. I can access my TSP at any time without any penalty. I'm currently 58. Aside from the house payment. My wife and I are pretty much living on my government pension quite comfortably. Okay, So the answer to your question is maybe the TSP that David's referring to, by the way is the thrift savings plan, which is the retirement program for federal employees, Basically the same as a 41 K for everybody else. And the question is, when should you begin to make withdrawals from your retirement account? Whether it's a 41 k 43 b t s p I r A What have you? When should you start doing that? The IRS dictates when you must begin, But that isn't until age 72. So the question is, Should you start sooner than that? Voluntarily recognizing that as you make withdrawals you pay taxes on those withdrawals doesn't matter what you use the money for whether you use it to pay mortgage payments or anything else. Um, you're going to pay taxes on the withdrawal. Only exception is if you make withdrawals after 72 for charity purposes, But that's a separate conversation. Generally speaking, we tell people that you shouldn't make withdrawals from your retirement accounts until you have to. For the simple reason why withdraw now and pay taxes now, when that's not required, you know the further you delay the tax, the more wealthy create in the account, because if you leave the money untouched, it will continue to grow. If you withdraw it, then that money won't be there to grow any further. Plus, you're paying taxes, and you could have avoided that by using other money that's available to you. For example, you can use the pension money that you're getting from the government. Or you could use other savings money is in taxable accounts or bank accounts. Those monies can be used to pay the mortgage without incurring any tax liability the way you would incur. From a withdrawal of the TSP. So generally we would say no, don't make a withdrawal from the retirement account. But here's the interesting wrinkle and David. I think you're aware of this and it's the basis for your phone call. If you wait To make withdrawals from your retirement accounts until you're 72 At that point, the IRS dictates the amount you must withdraw and the amount you must withdraw might be so much That it pushes you into a higher tax bracket. Meaning if you did make withdrawals in your fifties and sixties Even though you didn't have to. You control the amount that you withdrew and you can withdraw only as much as allows you to stay in a low tax bracket. So that by making early withdrawals meaning prior to mandatory And doing so, at a limited degree, you not only pay a lower tax on those withdrawals now you help avoid the problem of having the account grow too high. In your seventies where mandatory withdrawals would be very expensive tax wise. So on that basis, David, my answer is maybe maybe you should, In fact, make withdrawals from your thrift account. Now, even though you're not required. What you need to do is meet with a tax advisor who can do the calculations for you. It's called a proforma where they do. A tax return preparation. They don't file it with the IRS. They just do the math as if they were to see how much money can you withdraw from your thrift account? So that you don't increase your tax rate and let your tax advisor be your guide, and you might discover that yeah. Taking some money from your thrift account might in the long run. Help you to reduce your overall taxes. You'll be paying a little more now, but you'll avoid paying a lot more later. Under that theory, That's that's exactly what I was thinking and worried about. I was looking at if I had to take an rmd today. It would pretty much pretty effectively double the amount that I need to live on. And I did not want to shove myself into a bad spot farther down the road. So what you, uh said, you know, really does line up with what? My suspicions were good. Well, I'm glad I was able to confirm that for you. You're thinking about it correctly, and now it's just a question of playing with the arithmetic to determine the actual dollar amounts that are involved. But the strategy does make a lot of sense and odds are good financial advisor can assist you with this as well. But ultimately this is a tax question. We love to have tax advisors tackle these for our clients. So there you go, David. Okay. Okay. Thank you so much. You're very welcome. That was David and Crossville, Tennessee. "Let's speak on that particular bullet point and then we'll go on to the rest of it. We learned a few weeks ago. If you months ago about this next trails game this is after. Had your mario koseki which has already been out in japan. Still no window on. When it's coming to the west there is another game coming it is not a sequel to in the cold. Steel or the hadgem series. It is a new game. Speculation has been that it will finally head to calvert which is pretty much won the last places. We've not seen an arab coming out next year. Of course that is japan and with that. I thought that a western gamer would have is good grief. Japan is going to get another game before the previous one comes out in the west. Because i gotta be honest jewelry. Making out next year is going to be Ah push for anna's america. They have got their work. Cut out for him. I really hope it happens this time but i am not. I wouldn't bet on it. That's put it that way so multiple titles for consoles in twenty twenty one the first and most obvious Thing that. I think that they should put out is the crossville series Both zero ao because those games have already been put onto playstation four in japan. They simply need to be translated. That would obviously be a lot less work than trying to put out other titles. I think the obvious next thing in this is pretty much doing what japan. But you know. We're gonna talk out from a western perspective as well. I still series the entire four game. Arc will be available on windows switch talking about that. What could they also be talking about the the next speculation. And there's a lot of people that would reload to see this considering it's only available in its entirety on steam and the first two games on vita and now defunct system is remastering. Importing all three trials in the sky games to current well. It won't be current by next year but at least the modern systems but the ability for an so by doing those things you now now have an ability for everybody to pretty much to play this entire series of games. Isn't that gonna happen for sure. I think we'll learn more at the aforementioned winter day here and just over a month. Maybe that's you know lay out some more concrete titles get. Some people hyped up about things right before christmas. It's exciting no matter how you could. This is exciting. It will only be exciting. If these plants don't include the rest of the world outside japan that would be by Next bullet point with over five million copies sold and the wonder of various awards including japan. Game awards famitsu award and playstation word. The trails series is one of outcomes. Flagship series including the series falcon will expand its gain content to multiple platforms such as playstation force. Which pc and smartphone worldwide japan north america europe and asia. I mean they're already on these platforms. So i'm sure what that means other than. Okay yeah here comes the mandatory smartphone. Game yeah i just want to jump over that one. Anyway falcons will continue to provide a game new game. Content will actively using in-house ip to produce new titles to act as new challenges including the trails and ye series. We talked about that previously when they announced this brand new tales gain that it was going to be on this new in house game system that they had created Think what square inex- usually does with their with their games..

"A cz well This is the California report. Good morning. I'm Lily Jamali here in Northern California. The utility P Genie is out of bankruptcy. Thie company entered into Chapter 11 in January 2019 weeks after the camp fire, which killed 86 people and wiped out much of the town of Paradise. While some of state in the region hoping to rebuild many you're starting over in other places. In January, we told you about researchers at Chico State who have been using postal data to figure out where everybody went. Back then Peter Hanson showed me a map that displayed how people were scattered all over California and the U. S. As we were talking. I asked him this. Hey, what do you think's going on with this intensity? That's very bizarre. There's this one kind of outlier in Tennessee that has I want to say there's 20 people there. So so I don't know what it was about that place, but a lot of people went there. The cluster was in and around Crossville, Tennessee, a town of just 12,000 people. So in March, just before the pandemic prompted everything to shut down. I went there to learn Why some campfire survivors now call the area. This was Dark colored Dan and Sherry Wetland are showing me around their house, which sits on 24 acres in Crossville, unlike their home in Paradise, where they ran a construction business for almost five decades. They didn't build this place, but they love it, And they're already thinking about how to add to it. Starting with the guest room. My wife wants me to put a kitchen at here. They get lots of visitors. The wetlands moved here about a month after the campfire. It is a darling little town a ride into the heart of Crossville. Dan tells me how it happened so quickly. Two days after the fire is paradise was still smoldering. Dan drove in and got a look at the damage. He was once the mayor and saw countless homes, businesses and churches that he and sherry had built over decades destroyed. I just said this will never be my town in my lifetime again. And so I just made that decision were gone. I just said we're leaving. We're not going to stay here. It will never be what we knew again ever so we chose to leave. And then over the next few weeks, we decided on Tennessee flew out to Tennessee found a beautiful home. That became our home. Dan took to Tennessee almost right away. He went to high school here, and his uncle and brother were already living here. But for Sherry, it didn't feel like home until a recent road trip. There was a part of me that still felt like if we come back, is the house going to be there, you know, And then when we were headed home way were both saying, Well, we're going to be glad to get out of the car. Get home. It felt like going home paradise anymore. It was here now. A couple of friends and Sherri's mom and sister have moved to the area to in March. When I visited the wetlands organized a re union of the Para decent Stan calls them. Who now live in and around Crossville for Veda Bouffard. The re union puts her back in touch with people She hasn't seen since the fire prize. Well, what have you been doing? Besides moving to cross Bill? Oh, my God. And for Jessie Arnold, it creates an opportunity to make new friends just unbelievable because I don't know any of these people. It's like, how did you end up here for Bouffard? A big draw was that so many people here are devout. It feels like paradise decades ago when she first arrived. I didn't know anybody in paradise when I moved there, either. But there was a church on every corner instead of a bar on every corner, and I Think the same Tennessee the wetlands, longtime friends Randy and Glenn Harris are also here, Randy says. When it came time to rebuild, they decided their money would go farther in Tennessee. In around paradise, where housing costs skyrocketed after the fire came here to visit our dear friends, and when we saw the price of homes we just couldn't refuse..

"Company fallen that far just because of covid going to recover, is it well positioned or the fundamentals good, and if so you can hop in at that price and might continue to go down, but you're not buying it to sell this week or next week or the week after. After that, you're buying it because you know what good company and it's going to come back a long way over time, and that's really the only look at it but I do think that there are people who will end up making a lot of money out of this crisis, because that always happens, we saw that in two, thousand, eight and two, thousand and three and the Asian financial crisis, and you know all of those all of those sort of market crashes. There were people that had money on. The sidelines jumped in and really sort of. Did very well. You can set yourself up for life if you if you have resources at a time like this. yeah, I'm really interested to see how. Property markets are going to are are going to figure this thing out. I mean I've read just a number of stories across Crossville across Canada across the United States. Particularly people who who really got caught in sort of the worst sort of timing situation you could imagine or by. They sold their home. Immediately prior. To the pandemic or at least purchased a home immediately prior to two things breaking out, and now they're stuck. Unable to to sell their home, so they're effectively carrying two mortgages on two separate properties the value of their. Home that they had prior to the pandemic has effectively tanked and purchasers out there to buy anything I. Really feel for a lot of these people. I mean these all. They've also lost their jobs, so we've got the Labor situation to mortgages. I don't know where things go for a lot of these families and a lot of them are middle class working class families whatever that means anymore in this in this context, but it's really really disconcerting. Yeah it's I..

"Yeah but you should. Why are you spending all that time like China data and I don't even know if you make that much for that to be worth it. I don't know I just know that like it is like for for example so one of my goals for the year. and I like a fitness track so that I really thought about it. I was like I just want fitness and like it's working out just to be a more normal part of my lifestyle well. I don't like going to the gym to ever feel like Oh my God. I have to go work out because I hate my body because I I don't want to. I just wanted to be like Oh the same way that I brush my teeth Ethan. I eat lunch and I like check instagram. I also work out like that's just what is so by the end of the year. I will have completed two hundred twelve workouts. The end of this year like my year goal is you're doing squad. Were just constantly. Oh Yeah I am in a pool of sweat like a swimming pool diving and and water is salty and if I do that that averages out to three to five workouts a week and I'm saying a workout is anything thing where I am like sweating in my heart rate is up so that could be even if it's like a ten minute Ryan or something phone call or a phone call. I'm like a hike or like hike with friends or like doing something with other people giving that as a gift to myself and that is a measurable goal so it's not like. I just wanted to be more of a lifestyle. That's my goal is just to be healthier right right and so how can I measure that. That's been my goal for so long and it doesn't ever work yeah that's yeah. I like that a lot. I'm a pick a number that will be really good. Good Yeah and it's nice to us. It's nice to have to have goals with people and to be like you know and to do things with with friends I mean I I adjoined cross fit gym and it has been really fun to go not because I like love Crossville. I think is a fun workout. I'm not like I'm not really addicted to any kind of like working out thing. I think I just generally like doing karate. My body is kind of like. It's fit to kind of any sport fine like it's not like I'm a May uh-huh amazing at one thing. I'd like swimmer's body. It's like I don't have a swimmer's body but I could swim out so it's like. I'm not like built built for cross fit but like I can. I can do it so it's less about like. I love this specific sport but more about other people here. I want to go because I wanNA see Katie and Cole. I WANNA see like I wanna I wanna go to my boxing class or even teach boxing now and it's really fun to see the same faces who come and take the class and then even that feels like not as much of a job. It feels like to see Chris. How're you doing Katie. Chris and Coal Katie could people. I'm Bob single ripple. I'd the Steph has been taking my Tuesday Thursday. She loves it. She's got a dog named Susan Okay. Susan and I and I am closer with her because she's been taking the class hasn't she's happy about it. She now loves boxing and it's like it is fun. I I liked and a sounds like wow this is I have I'm talking some. We're talking about goals and I spent so much. It's time talking about how much I like working out with people and it's a community and it's like. Oh if I liked that so much I should make that a goal for that to be a consistent part of my life totally because it does make me happy and it's the part outside of career. Yeah I can have my own goals with yeah and my goal isn't a weight number. I think that gets tricky for me because I like eating disorder stuff for. I've had it and so like saying or I still have. It never really goes away fun but like but for me. It's like oh I don't. I Never WanNa be like I have to wait this amount of weight 'cause for me. That doesn't work yeah a lot of ways. I usually never get anywhere close and I ended up just like hating myself which is the opposite head of what the goal is. That's the other thing. I want to take a break but right when we come back. I Really WanNa talk about like what happens. If we don't hit a goal because that is detrimental ideas okay we'll take a quick break gives us an extra piece of advice. You could find at just podcast on instagram and we'll be right back. I realized that the older I get the more I want to learn more about everything this year alone. I've learned how to cook a poached egg how to use more powerful than I even knew.

"The story comes from crossville, Tennessee, a forty five year old woman was walking to waffle house, and she was tired of walking. She goes. Oh, there's a WalMart. You know, what I'm going to get one of the electric carts. Drives it out and starts going down the highway to get to walk will house. Oh, she just leaves on it. Yes. She says that's good transportation because her feet were tired and she was arrested for theft. Well, it is a good transportation tires a little slow. But yeah. Imagine. If you feet are super tired. How slow that must. Drove it out on the highway drinking. They do believe. I'll always it was five AM. Can you imagine that? Behind somebody scooters on the on the actual road road. Yes. On the sidewalk. No, no, no. This is not exactly the interstate. But it was a road where you should be going. I think fifty and the birds they're low electric scooters all these cities now and you put like a nickel in it. What's happening? This is really since the right on the road. Not main roads like this or not. There in the middle of the road car when they're on whatever road they're on. They're not supposed to be on the sidewalk you're supposed to bribe him in the by the sidewalk. No by right. I'm so confused now. So where do these people ride? This is not good. I know. Well, this lady she's still in the big house or no. She's still in the big house. You sure shouldn't just bond. He's funny story that your bone story today. "We were talking about slogans boys, the new wall slow guy. No and doesn't just hats. Hoods build a wall. Crime will fall. Yeah. Bill Bill, that's the competing slogan to build a wall crossville from afar, I put that on my bumper or something. So I can remember it more easily. The president's tweets. We'll get right back into the store. And then we'll talk about the president's tweets come amid a thirty three day partial government shutdown. I think this is must be. I thought we celebrated number thirty four today. Yeah. I think you're right about that. Yeah. Making history guys. You know, I I've been I went through five shutdowns shutdowns during my my military days. Maybe Trump's trying to get the record of longer than all of the other shutdowns combined because he's already got the record on just single shutdown. Longest one I'm rooting for him. Yeah. I if that's the case. That's great. Yeah. I went through five different government shutdowns. And I know I had late pays on more than two occasions. I'm rooting he digs his heels in like a retard like years already. But I'm also like God. I hope the Democrats don't cave and give him this wall at the same time. You know? Please don't please don't cave fences in pleased. It's interesting to see the more conservative types, you know, trying to rationalize this like, look, you know, we agree with you. We don't want the government shutdown either. It's it's causing harm to our country. We really got to get this thing back open. And really if you look at the size of the total government budget five million. By billion billion is just it's a pittance. It's nothing right. We sit in what that's just do it. That's how much we send to Israel every year, you know, and four in foreign aids. So I don't a fully developed countries. So I I really don't see what the issue is. It's what we spend on the department of education every year, and we don't even educate any children in.

"That's it. That's a fair fair setting. She you if you want if you bring your own Greek yogurt to the gym because you're a morning workout guy, and you want some protein, FU workout spend, one more minute get dressed and walkout need in your car or walkout in eat it in the lobby of the gym every Jim has a sitting area in the front in the a cut rate. Gold's has has three leather chairs up front. Right. Don't you dare bring yogurt into the gym or any food for that matter in the locker room, but especially like food that's gonna make you look soft. You're in the gym, bro. I guess the guy wants protein and probiotics chefs the ProVia boys out there. But dude, you can't you can't eat anything in the locker room in less. It's a protein or protein about Bonaire it. No. That's that's weird. You can eat a banana after you after you put your clothes on. I understand the need for protein in the need for sustenance or whatever. But like, I'm with Mike you gotta get out of that fucking locker room and go eat somewhere else. It's weird. But also that is a classic. Head thing though, where it's like the moment in foster workout like gotta get my protein in right now, dude, if you just put your clothes on and you walk out and you do your protein ninety five seconds from now. It'll be fun. Yeah. It was the worst thing about like I did cross fit for a year, which is what eventually led to me writing. It's all coming full circle. Yeah. That's stop crossville article that I wrote that spoke to at the beginning of the the podcast in the Roth special anecdote for non skipper segment, which some of you might not know what the fuck I'm talking about which that was the point. Crawford people were the worst with that shit like the workout would end, and I'd look over in this dude would already be main lining like three smoothies, which just like how the fuck damn dude. I still trying to catch my breath, and you're already to smoothies, deep workout dudes love housing shit. That's gonna give their muscles the fuel they need, and I get it. It's just this is the kind of shit that keeps me from ever going to join a big old, Jim like I joined Elliott fitness for like a week once and it was hell on earth. It's seven thousand in. What are the? I'm having a brain for. What are the things you run on indoors for indoor running a treadmill treadmill? Thank you. Well. Yeah. They is just thousand treadmills tons shitty. People eating things that I don't wanna see the meeting or the locker room situation is always too weird is like you're lucky. The dude had a towel on frankly, eating the Greek yogurt, he very easily most of the time the complaint you hear about old men who just have no care in the world for the. No nudity because they've hit that stage in life, which that's a stage at every man hits. At some point. You just stop caring about your naked body. That's right. And it just it just all too weird for me, man. It's like I'll just do Ross fit in my garage. I don't eat any of this. I don't need to know what the Greek yogurt situation is in the locker room. I just I just don't I don't get it. I don't know why put yourself through this the gyms gross me out there, fucking gross. A quick word from our sponsor hymns before.

"They don't have to wait to get it back. Get a receipt they can just get out of the car soon as they get their that sounds like it's friction lists. And so little things like that allow you to create a better product to give you away to like map this four-stage framework onto the projects that you're working on. So that's the first example. And then the second way to apply it is to think more about your personal life. And for this case, I think there are a couple of big buckets that we can talk through in focus on just hit the hit at them at a real high level, and you can tell me which ones who want to dive into. But so we already talked about physical environment. But that's a that's a big one social environment, and the tribes that you're part of is another big one both personally and professionally and then also technology autumn. Nation. So those three areas I would say those are good places to focus for making some these initial changes you've detailed this out. This is how we get in and assess our systems in really really think through it. I do want to have you just forbid we'll move on. But I do want you to talk about, you know, the idea of the people you're hanging around, and you said social networks because high achievers I don't know that anybody would disagree with this fact that so much of the habits and the performance in your life are affected by the people. You hang around. You know, it's it's just a reality. We may all have the the lovable goofball that we stayed friends with forever, right? But we didn't hang out with that guy for the for the last twenty years as we moved on from high school speak to the importance of of of systems and habits around people that are going to push us and pull us again. Let's come back to the scientific basis. So all humans have this deep primal desire. Fire to belong our ancestors living in tribes. And if you were abandoned by the tribe, it was a death sentence. Right. Like, we we want to fit in we want to belong. We care about what others think of us because for many years it helped us if others thought well of us and still does today. Right. But it was literally a death sentence if he didn't belong for a long time. And so today we inherit that desire. We have that same desire to belong. And as a result, we are part of many tribes. And some of those tribes are large like what it means to be American or what it means to be French or Australian or whatever or some of those tribes are small like what it means to be a neighbor on your street or to be a member of your local crossville, Jim or to be a volunteer at the elementary school. But all of those tribes large and small have a set of shared expectations for how you act in that group, and you can see this in all sorts of habits. You know like you get onto an elevator. And you're expected to turn around and face. The fr. Front or you have a job interview. And you wear something. Nice like a suit in attire address. Now, there's no reason that has to be like that. Right. Like, you could face the back of the elevator you could wear bathing suit to a job interview. But we don't do that. Because it violates the expectations of that group of the people that are in the room that tribe, and this is true for many of our habits when habits and behaviors allow you to fit in to belong with the group. They're very attractive and we wanna stick with them. And when habits force you to stand out or stick out or cast out from the group, then they're very unattractive and we want to avoid them. And so the key inside here. I think this is where we take this from like this scientific basis to a more practical application is you want to join tribes you want to join groups where the desired behaviors than normal behavior. And I think a lot about my own entrepreneurial experience when I think about this. Because when I started I didn't have any entrepreneurs and. My family. I didn't even really have any that were close friends..

"It's really likely that your biggest business changing connections are gonna come out of this conference. So if you haven't bought your ticket yet, it's not too late. But just make sure to pick it up as soon as possible. Because like I said this event does sell out and it's coming up soon January twentieth or twenty third in Dallas, Texas. So hopefully, I will see you there. I'm out work ethic and outworking everybody else. Do you have a strategy that you're following to go from where you are now for you want to be? Or or is it you're working in looking for the next breakthrough? So we're we're working on that. Actually, we're we're working with our team to be better about that. Because the things that we lack is the structure this because there's so many pieces that are moving so quickly. Yeah. And here in here in a couple of weeks where we're sitting down and trying to have a strategy with our marketing team with our Email campaign guys and just getting everybody on the same page because for the last four months with all the events and we've done it's just been like will handle it after the Crosby games after all because we've been swimming, you know, and now we've got a window a five months here. We don't have any major events until January where we can really try to refocus and re ground ourselves. And and get ourselves in a position to continue that growth. Yes, I want to ask you you go to a lot of these events. Tell me about the ROI liar. The net benefit that gained get from going to the. Shows that are cross fit related. I know you you spend a lot of time and energy going setting up booths and sponsoring them and going and being present there that that's a lot for physical products brand. So tell me why you do it. I think the most important thing Ryan is that presence. We were talking about a little while ago. We don't go to those looking like the, okay, we're going to these shows because we're going to try to make a lot of money today. Right. We look at it more as it's going to be a presence. We're going to be out in front of our direct consumer direct target audience. We're gonna shake hands with people that are fans people that may not know who we are. And where I think the growth comes from going to the evinces whenever somebody by say a pair of grips or parodies leaves or weight belt. And then they go back to their gym after say, the crossville games and they use the product and they loved the product and they start talking to other gym members. And they're like, yeah. You know, what got these? Pair grips. They're awesome on the bar. I can hang on for five war-torn of ours. You know, I've never been able to do that. And all of a sudden, I think you start to see the spider, you know, the spider legs come out. And we always see a jump in sales after these major events in we truly believe it's because of that presence of you know, athletes, taking these things back home, their Jin's, usually they're probably some of the more athletic or better cross-fitters in their Jim. That's what I was gonna ask you go into these these are high level events. Right. The people who traveled regional a lot of times if they're not athletes in participating themselves. They're still they're the ones that are really into it. They're super engaged. They're kind of like you're most likely to be advocate, so d- focus on them. And then kind of let them carry the message out or how does that work? Yeah. And I think that's exactly what it is. I think, you know, even each go to your local gym in you, have you definitely have different levels of athletes. Right. You have some your beginners intermediate? You have some that have been doing. For a couple of years, and you have some that are really advancing some that are elite and some of the beginners intermediate they really look up to some of those advanced in elite athletes, and that's typically what you're gonna find that come to some of these events that were at is some of those advanced in elite athletes in you know, when people come back with those products, and they start talking to Jim members..
