Prince George's county police say 33 year old Stefan Jones of D.C. is now facing murder charges. $25,000 reward is being offered for information, leading to an arrest in the case, 20 year old Darien herring of Heinz ville was shot and killed at the food court of the mall at prince George's on August 18th. Police say shots were fired after an argument between the two men. California has made headlines with some tough new emissions rules, and those same rules are actually on track to come to Virginia as of now. California has moved to have all new cars pickup trucks and SUVs sold in the state to be primarily powered by electricity or hydrogen by 2035. And Virginia is currently on a path toward adopting those same rules because of 2021 legislation that involved the Commonwealth adopting California's emissions standards. The legislation was a top priority of environmental advocates and passed at a time when Democrats were in full control of Virginia's government. Governor Glen youngkin and Republicans in the House of delegates now say they'll push to unlink Virginia's standards. Republicans now control the house, but Democrats control the state Senate. A federal appeals court stands behind the comprehensive policing and justice Reform Act passed in 2020, a provision of it removed the police union from the process when it comes to disciplining officers. The union took the law to court, claiming it violated officers collective bargaining rights, a federal judge disagreed and dismissed the case, so the union appealed. "A jury has found two of the four men accused of plotting to kidnap the governor of Michigan Gretchen Whitmer not guilty yesterday But jurors couldn't reach a verdict on charges against the other two men prosecutors allege the defendants were planning to kidnap the governor and eliminate her security detail in 2020 We're joined now by reclus senior capital correspondent for the Michigan public radio network Rick thanks for being with us Oh you bet good morning Scott Please take us back to 2020 and remind us of the allegations in this case Sure a couple of years ago the FBI caught wind of a plot to kidnap the democratic governor The suspects were apparently upset over her COVID-19 restrictions and pandemic orders And according to the indictment they decided to do something about it and it reached the point where investigators said they made plans to kidnap the governor Prosecutors say they even staked out a vacation home in northern Michigan and they talked about either putting her on trial or just setting her adrift on a boat in Lake Michigan And who were the men accused in this plot Their names are Daniel Harris Daniel cassata Adam Fox and Barry Croft and they called themselves the Wolverine Watchmen They were members of a self styled militia group that practiced paramilitary training They talked about assaulting the Michigan state capitol but they decided that was too risky so they allegedly settled on a different plan plan was this kidnapping plot And there were explosives not only explosive charges but actual explosives in the charges weren't there Yeah law enforcement says they put together homemade bombs ostensibly to blow up a bridge to slow down the police and they practiced with guns and explosives In fact in a secretly taped conversation with an FBI informant one of the men warns one of his kids to stay away while he builds a bomb And how did the defense counter these charges Well the men's defense was that they weren't serious that they were entrapped And they smoked a lot of pot and talked to tough game but in the end nothing happened One of the defense attorneys described the alleged plot as quote laced with marijuana smoke and mirrors Here defense attorney Michael hill says it was a government informant known as big Dan who really prodded the conspiracy along I.

"When he fights one of the things. I noticed a certain pattern that developed watching every indiana jones fight is that he fights in an effort to run away a heck of a lot. He doesn't fight and then stand over people and then get his victories. He's often fighting people away from himself so he can try to escape. That's not going to work in a who would win battle. You talk about motivations. He's much more about self preservation. Most of the time then actually getting over on his enemy. The other thing is that you brought up a great example. I didn't think about of how it works together until you mentioned it. But he was mind controlled in the temple of doom movie. He turned into a bad guy. Through this ancient. You a mystical mind control. So what's stopping the lara croft. Fear gas that. I mentioned in my point number one from overtaking him and just frankly causing him to be not a threat anymore at least for two minutes or that she could dispatch him or he just runs away so first of all he's usually in the middle of large armies or groups of people infiltrating places. Where then they you know. He's got to do something and they come after him. And instead of standing taking on full armies he fights his way out. That's the thing he does number two. Does laura croft have the same stuff on hand that was used against indiana jones and temple. The do maybe she does. I'm just asking i'm asking. Does she have the fear gas. She has it in the games right. She does not have those mccreevy and nor does she have the ability to tie down for a long time and then the gas down. It's up in the air. I ramming points from ray. Hurt two points for me. We're now at the turning point. This is where you have to tell us who you think is heading the battle and what the other side has to do to pull out the victory. His physique is the same as it is in raiders of lost ark versus the alien one that nobody liked at the end so for saying that he's thirty five to forty in the best shape of his life having survived all kinds of things including world war one with mustard gas. And all of that. We know that he's a survivor. We know that he's smart. We know that he can get a lot of things done and in high pressure situations his mind is sharp as a tack that can also be said of lara. Croft who you pointed out survived things that only buster. Keaton has survived taking an avalanche to the dome and not reacting. But i will say the first in the first round james had a bit of an edge based on the sheer knowledge and breadth of the abilities and materials possessed by indiana jones so he was slightly ahead and now your neck and neck going into this final round because his ray pointed out. Laura's no slouch. It's not someone playing the video game on easy it someone with complete mastery. Perhaps that's ray. He talks a lot about. Is video game prowess. I can't say i don't watch his twitch stream. I don't know if anybody else does either. Thought that brings us to this round where you gotta lay it all on the line right now. We've talked a lot about physical fighting abilities and weapons that you have on hand with some mentions of just basically mentioning genius level. I q or e q. In both cases. So what. I need knowing that yes. They're both fight trained. Yes they both have mastery of weapons yes. They are smart. How are they gonna put all of that together. Assume again a friction. The surface assume they are evenly matched. Assume that they are at the peak of their abilities. What is the one thing that indiana jones has that lara croft. What is the one thing that lara croft has that indiana jones doesn't that puts them over the top. That is what i'm looking for here. Because right now you both are making some very compelling arguments even with ray calling bogut bubba effet and you calling me. Mola ram interesting interesting interesting. All right very cool. So ray we're now kind of neck and neck again we've been here so many times is now getting ridiculous and this is where again. I've learned from experience you bring in the heavy artillery you kinda come with a great strategy. Been up in your game. I i may actually have an idea of where you're going with this. But i may be surprised so with all of that said hit us your point number three point number three for lara croft and where we really bring it home. Just we put this altogether. It's so funny rama. How that's what you're looking for. Because that's what i'm prepared to give you. Who knew first off you talk about. What a survivor they both. It's true but i would argue that. She's a bigger survivor. In part of the reason why she's such a great survivor is her tracking and survival skills. You talk about hunting not meaning anything. I think it does mean something because it gives you a certain killer instinct. It gives you the ability to finish. It gives you the ability to finish the job and now she can track. She can survive. He has those skills. He's had to do it out in the wilderness over and over and over again. How because she was trained to use all five of her senses to a higher level. Though i'm not gonna argue that she's wolverine out here. But i would say that she's more in tune with her five senses and how to use them. She has very superior hearing as well as our other senses. In fact one time she was walking into a cave. Well there was a guy who was trying to ambush her from the darkness but she could smell his sweat in the air so she knew that there was somebody in that cave and she was not able to be ambushed by him because she already knew. And if there's one thing. Indiana jones does that sweat. I see that man sweat and awful lot. Hey win one thing that happens. A lot of people try to get the jump on her from behind whether they are speaking using stealth. What have you but they never succeed. And why because she hears it she feels it in the ground anytime. Somebody tries to come up behind her. She no look blocks it. She's done this in the games in the comic books over and over again hack. She wants did it. To a jaguar. A giant creature you know cat came from behind the tried to attack. Her ran and lunged at her with jaguar speed. She felt it coming. She heard its presence. She dodged out of the way at the last second of the jaguar disappeared into the darkness. Those cats move fast and they move ferociously they also have a predatory instinct that she does. Indiana jones come in that and she was able to get out of the way of that pack. She's going to use stealth in this battle. One thing that she did was that she wanted to use stealth against her opponents in one of the battles. What did she do. She destroyed all the lights in the area to create as much darkness as possible so she could skulk around the darkness because she knew that if she could take the sense of sight off the table. She had a monstrous advantage over her opponent. So what she's going to do to indiana jones is. She's going to creative much. Darkness as possible because indiana jones ain't ready to fight like that but she is. She's going to sneak up behind him. She's either going to use the darkness to our advantage to come up behind and use that acts and cut him down or take a big swing him or more likely. She's going to hide in the darkness. She's going to pull out that bowe and she's gonna cap him right there in the head or us one of her powerful fire explosive. Fear bows and take him out that way and with you take out that kind of sense of sight for indiana jones against the character like lara. Croft he has no chance she just uses the environment better than he does and the last thing to talk about mystical weapons. Lara croft through her adventures has had access to some crazy mystical weapons. The excalibur sword wielded by king. Arthur broke into four pieces. She found all four. Ford's them back together again. And use the sort of legend from king arthur logistics caliber. What stop bigger for music it here and the other big one near she found in used thors hammer and thors gauntlets. Woodhead had some sort of electricity property to them and her to wheel the hammer of thor. She is worthy. That's the big point i'm making. And she has mystical weapons to use whenever the heck she wants to she keeps them in a display case. Who's to say knowing there a battle coming. She doesn't bust. What out and bust. Indiana jones right in the head with a hammer of four and that is my point number three. Wow so much unpack with that okay. First of all interesting. I'm not surprised that litter cough has at stealth ability about her behind the darkness. So what's really cool about. All of the continuity with indiana jones is that within the comic books the novels. And what have you. That are considered part of the characters lore. He's actually made us. He's got a specially where he fights in the darkness remember. I quoted earlier how he can dodge gunfire by instinct with as in the darkness without being able to see it. That's something he's done he's arrows. He's fought creatures underwater in darkness. He bought a giant squid underwater in the darkness stated that and still one being in the dark. Not going to be a for him. he'll be able to. He's done it many many times. Remember over a career if you will of decades this is something. He's done quite a bit. And he's quite adept at it by the way again espionage infiltration being sneaky himself something. He's been trained in as well over a quite a bit of time very interesting. You brought up these mystical weapons one question about that. Were these part of lara. Croft's usual If you will or these one offs she has used them in the games before and often keeps trophies in her trophy room. So a random encounter. Does she have a way to pull these one offs from her trophy room into the battle. Does she have a teleport numbers. Just i'm not familiar with this aspect of the character. Does she have a way to bring those. One offs issue still even has them brummer trophy room into this random encounter that happens out of the blue. Why not god. It's obvious kennison no okay. Well played race aquinas. Okay this is interesting. Let me go to my point number three because we're actually to have something in common with as my point three is all about the ultimate survivability of indiana joe's and how use that to tie into getting a victory so lyric cropped again no junk survived some horrific conditions some insane. Injuries is extremely tight cetera. There's no doubt about that. However indiana jones ability survived literally anything. I mean literally. Anything is on another level in fact his survivability survivability maybe actually i hate to say this the best way i can describe it is an actual superpower almost like domino that character domino from deadpool. Two where she had such great luck she could survive everything just because she could look throughout indiana jones adventures. He's demonstrated that he's a master of one thing surviving everything and then winning in the end. Maybe that thanks to his unique you or surviving. Something in a way which gets him to that. Victory some way some shape somehow so for example he's been smash around by a giant grizzly bear then walked it off somehow survived it and then walked it up in one of the you games. He got hit point blank by blame or and nothing. He was fine. Somebody call that a glitch in the video game. I call that survivability. In one of the books he went over huge two hundred foot waterfall after taking a massive beating and just swam to the shore absolute fine. That's after taking on an army. You know getting hit with the army. He escaped got blah blah blah to earn feet down now by the way the world record is less than two hundred feet. Indiana jones did that and walked out. Fine he got hit with someone who also had a bull whip and use that well he's taking chunks out of the metal walls and everything he got hit by it and was actually okay. Shook it off pretty quickly. He survived mullah rom the villain from the temple of doom. Move again trying to rip his heart out. That's insane. let's see in the movie he gets poisoned and still keeps on fighting. Remember at the beginning of that really cool scene at that nightclub he gets poisoned keeps fighting survives until he gets the antidote and escapes the whole situation. He knows how to survive small way. He took a sore to the head and was fine. The sword didn't try any blood whatsoever. Maybe it's fedora. Who knows when a secret in order. Giant squid was trying to pull him off a boat. He saved himself by looking around saying god. If i detonate this crate of grenades in close range in such a way when the secret can take me in. I can maneuver myself. Last-second around the body of it and forces into the sea cracking spotty. Boom he got. The secret has destroyed. This is ripping apart ship. It was massive giant indiana jones. He was okay when a magical blasts of energy that can show a huge temples of stone. Temples pits indiana jones. He says well felt like. I got hit by lightning. Didn't feel good but seconds later. Look all these pizza survivability. They're crazy. They're kind of crazy almost superhuman but we got something extra special that really knows how superhuman his survivability is sure again i talked about lords vengeance when you opened up the ark of the cabinet surviving that. Guess what that's more. I'm talking about roma you've talked about the nuclear bomb thing that happened in the fourth movie. Okay here's the deal. i mean. set that up. So he's in this weird kind of town with mockups of like remember like the families. The dumpster whatever l. The house is he hears alarm nuclear bombs about to be set off. He's at ground zero for that. So what does he do. He runs all over the place. He runs back in the kitchen. He sees an old school fridge puts himself into the fridge. Somehow close. it doesn't lock it by the way because that's from the outside just close. It holds the tight. The nuclear bomb goes off. Destroys the entire city. Vaporizes it the fridge. Survive somehow and get shot through the air. Looks like at least hundreds of yards and then hits the ground super hard tumbles luckily lands facing up so the ngos opens the door cats out kind of like. Wow that was not cool and slowly walks it off. What do you call that by the way. I don't know what's worse if you remember this because we're all kids from the eighties by the way we'll atv. Do you remember that particular and very sad emotional. Punky brewster were offense. Sherry put herself into a fridge outside because they're playing hide and seek and she suffocated and they had to open it and form cpr and luckily they saved her. What's more dangerous than the fridge from the eighties. That's right a bridge from the fifties and that's what he put himself in. I'm almost wondering if the Nuclear bomb actually saved him from the fridge. As opposed to the fridge statement from nuclear bomb. All joking aside to survive a nuclear bomb get sent out and then hit the ground. Get up and get going. That is someone who has a high level of survivability remember according to he was in his late fifties early sixties when it happened so when you put that all together can lyric props survive. A nuclear bomb blasted fridge to the air again. The lord's vengeance. And what have you know and remember. Concrete examples of when she hunted people specifically in the dark heck one time in one of games climbed up a tree shot with an arrow with at a little rope attached to it. Pulled it back using your own body weight to hang them in the air like spiderman and then she took him out in tight him up like spiderman. I don't wanna say lara croft is also spiderman. He has real world enemies and then he also has spiritual enemies whether it's the wrath of god in raiders of lost ark whether it's invoking dougie rituals or invoking shiva to protect himself or knowing having the wherewithal to identify the cup of the carpenter in the last one and then facing aliens at the end of our favorite fridge movie. He's had to deal with a lot of these. Things regularly. Were the expectation for the unexpected is always there which brings us to this last fascinating where one offs in there and excalibur all all came into play. And what really stuck with me. When he fights one of the things. I noticed a certain pattern that developed watching every indiana jones fight is that he fights in an effort to run away a heck of a lot. He doesn't fight and then stand over people and then get his victories. He's often fighting people away from himself so he can try to escape. That's not going to work in a who would win battle. You talk about motivations. He's much more about self preservation. Most of the time then actually getting over on his enemy. The other thing is that you brought up a great example. I didn't think about of how it works together until you mentioned it. But he was mind controlled in the temple of doom movie. He turned into a bad guy. Through this ancient. You a mystical mind control. So what's stopping the lara croft. Fear gas that. I mentioned in my point number one from overtaking him and just frankly causing him to be not a threat anymore at least for two minutes or that she could dispatch him or he just runs away so first of all he's usually in the middle of large armies or groups of people infiltrating places. Where then they you know. He's got to do something and they come after him. And instead of standing taking on full armies he fights his way out. That's the thing he does number two. Keaton has survived taking an avalanche to the dome and not reacting. But i will say the first in the first round james had a bit of an edge based on the sheer knowledge and breadth of the abilities and materials possessed by indiana jones so he was slightly ahead and now your neck and neck going into this final round because his ray pointed out. Laura's no slouch. It's not someone playing the video game on easy it someone with complete mastery. Perhaps that's ray. He talks a lot about. Is video game prowess. I can't say i don't watch his twitch stream. I don't know if anybody else does either. Thought that brings us to this round where you gotta lay it all on the line right now. We've talked a lot about physical fighting abilities and weapons that you have on hand with some mentions of just basically mentioning genius level. I q or e q. In both cases. So what. I need knowing that yes. They're both fight trained. Yes they both have mastery of weapons yes. They are smart. How are they gonna put all of that together. Assume again a friction. The surface assume they are evenly matched. Assume that they are at the peak of their abilities. What is the one thing that indiana jones has that lara croft. What is the one thing that lara croft has that indiana jones doesn't that puts them over the top. That is what i'm looking for here. Because right now you both are making some very compelling arguments even with ray calling bogut bubba effet and you calling.

He's got years literally decades upon decades of experience with his firearm. Let's talk about the physical is what he's got. He's got above average agility. He's got way above average endurance. Which is crazy and survived. That not gonna pretend to beat them. He fought a giant octopus underwater and one and easily beat two swordsmen at with his bare hands. This guy can do a lot look. There's a lot of interesting things you know. Climb up to the highest statues that she finds and she could seemingly do it all day effortlessly without even breaking a sweat without even really having to breathe particularly hard afterwards because she is in impeccable shape. I've looked at indiana jones. Look he's not fat but indiana jones. He's doesn't exactly take a maxim cover model physique. I'll just say and also to what you said. Rama is indiana jones. A little bit older. Lara croft got a little bit of youth exuberance and that kind of young strength on her side. Heck some things. That lara croft has done since ramadan character. Who i've played at least nine or ten games with she's been caught in an avalanche while hanging off the side of a mountain with her red axe and she was fine in an avalanche that came on the side of a mountain and she was fine in fact she survives natural disasters. Like nobody i've ever seen. She survived cave-ins. She survived mudslides. She survived buildings that have collapsed. Whilst you was inside of them she was fine. What a steamship she was on exploded. She survived a plane crash. She has survived things that would kill a lesser man over and over and over again. We've seen her fall from great heights over and over again just landing. She doesn't let anything soft sometimes. It's water sometimes. It's not and she is fine afterwards. We see indiana jones. Take a little bit of a dive. And he's staggered. For a certain period of time lara croft is seemingly immune from explosions. She in the comic books. She shared a room with a suicide bomber. Who detonated his vest. Laura croft was completely to hard from this. I've seen in the research for this. Lara croft involved at close range to explosion after explosion after explosion. And she is fine. She walks away from absolutely all of it. And let's talk about that. Fighting style of indiana jones because it is very captain kirk like i would even argue. It's untrained. I would argue that. Indiana jones fights like a guy who's never been trained to fight before it doesn't work for him somehow. Yes and that's great. But lara croft has been trained in martial arts. That she was a young child. She has focused on kickboxing. So when it comes down to an actual fisticuffs if we take the weapons off the table. Lara croft is going. To give him a couple straight on shinn's to the noggin at high rates of speed. That he's not going to be ready for cause ain't nobody in indiana jones movie. Try to give him a savant kick to the head because it would've worked. I promise you right now. Strength lies she pushes giant stone blocks much larger than herself in order to sell these puzzles and uses her strength and body weight to pull giant levers to solve the same puzzles. Heck one time. She got hit by a bear trap. She stepped in one and a closed around her leg. She just pulled the thing off and walked away with no permanent damage. Who does that. Lara croft does that. And that's my point number. Two couple of things i need to correct for your as as normally i have to so first of all. So let's say she's got a good eight years nine years of a lot of great combat experience archaeological experience. What have you when you kind of put the decades even if it's twenty thirty years of the kind of grizzled veteran that is indiana jones. You know someone once said this. You can take someone who's got like you know that eight years pack a great experience but put up against that person with the you know the the griswold soldier who's seen a lot of stuff and can experience lots of indu and kinda knows how the world works in a kind of a different level. That's the person didn't come out ahead. All right let's kind of corrective lens. First of all she's killed bears. Jaguars yeti and many different animals is that correct and people and people she sounds like a monster killing wildlife like that. I mean seriously. Indiana jones has fought all these different animals. He doesn't like killing animals. Because burgess innocent bystanders. And what's happening on the play of these evil people. He doesn't want him getting involved and yet she just goes around kills them. That sounds kind of creepy. Let's see as far as indiana jones. Not be in great shape compared to crops cheese in great shape. Indiana jones is ripped absolutely ripped in great shape in the first three films in the fourth. Can't really tell you but in the first refills he is ripped. You can see baines muscle-popping out this guy's in shape. Finally indiana jones has been actually trained combative. He's a veteran of numerous different military's. Who's part of the french foreign legion. I think for a while. He served in different militaries and he also has been trained officially different versions of kung fu. So i don't think kickboxing will be something. He hasn't seen why does show whatever in any of his movies. By the way he does sometimes seem throw a punch. It looks like western boxing but that same style punch exists in a whole bunch of different styles of martial arts. Hashtag james knows all right. He was free p figured out survived. That lasts nowhere. Let's see in the fourth the third movie whereas father's mortally wounded piazza. Navigate these mazes in these horrible traps to get toward the goal was to kind of find out where the holy grail was the water. They could bring back and he'll his father with so father's link dying. She could use to hit the side of a mountain or ice sheet and pull herself up. But it's also very very sharp pointed and very very sharp lengthwise to the point where she can sneak up behind people using stealth to her advantage. She's able to pull the stealth move on indiana jones. He ain't gonna see it coming and she's gonna take that climbing acts and she's going to take him out with it she also in the newer iteration is fond of using a bow now. Indiana jones says his pistol whip. He doesn't really have an answer for a bo. We've seen him run away from bow wielding characters quite a bit and she has special additions. Enhancements if you will that she could put on the arrows whether that be fire explosive one that creates a poison cloud in my favorite one that causes fear and causes. That person who gets hit in the kind of scarecrow gas to attack their enemies and become basically useless to combat situation. Heck she has a silver strike bowl at one point that can pierce multiple enemies at the same time shooting upwards of what is it three shots at the same time fantastic. Additionally she's a genius she craft equipment or healing supplies on the fly based on her knowledge of the world around her of the of the herbs that she finds she can create healing balms using those heck mystical artifacts. I think so. We're not could actually use them. Of course that would be completely outrageous. But let's face it lower cross bit around mystical artifact or two and there's no telling where you might find i don't wanna bring up any specific examples because that would be unsporting of me but let's say you'd never know what she's going to have and that's my point number one. Okay so let me just start this off saying lower. Property is absolutely fantastic character. Bad ass deathly. You gotta respect everything that she brings the tables in terms of stealth. That's pretty cool. That she's stealthy. I will bring up. Indiana jones actually trained in espionage and infiltration methods in so stealth is also thing he can do. Let's see the bow. Between working on my novels and working on another post about my recent experience doing jury duty. I've been contemplating justice quite a lot. Today's show begins with a hefty dose of justice via letter to you from a friend Patricia Hyde. Her daughter, Rebecca, is determined to do justice for her country by serving in the United States Marines. Here's where you and I come in, Rebecca needs are encouragement while she mens from injury sustained during military training. Once she steamed fit enough, she can jump back into boot camp where she left off. The week before she began, she got married. With luck, she'll finish in time to see her husband by next February, which will be a year after their wedding. Of all the military branches, marine boot camp is the longest and most rugged. While Rebecca recovers, she's got jobs to do, just less physically taxing ones. Recruits are restricted from the outside world. They are allowed only snail mail and one phone call a week nothing more. Should you find it in your heart to write to her? I doubt you'll find anyone as grateful to receive your mail. After my friend's letter revised a bit for podcasting, you'll meet speculative fiction and horror author willow Croft. Now for Patricia. Dear listener this story is about my 22 year old daughter, Rebecca Hyde. She tried out for the U.S. Marine band after she finished high school. Alas, she wasn't selected, so she applied again after graduating from California state university Long Beach. After four years of college paid for by working at Jersey Mike's, a sandwich chain, and as a piano teacher, she was accepted into the USMC band. However, she must first get through boot camp. Her adventure began February 8th, 2021. After a two week quarantine, she was shipped with other recruits to Paris island South Carolina. Two months later, I received a faithful call. My daughter was seriously injured while carrying her 65 pound backpack. She suffered a stress fracture of her pelvis, both sides of her growing were pulled, and one of her fingers was broken. Nothing, though, can make her quit her dream. Presently assigned to a medical platoon, she is coming along, healing and feeling less and less pain. In a few weeks, Rebecca will be placed in an active platoon to finish boot camp where she left off. I'm concerned for her during what's called the crucible. It's a test every recruit must pass to become a marine. To graduate recruits need to be quote forged by the fire of the crucible that means 54 hours, 48 miles, 45 pounds of gear, 36 stations, 29 problem solving exercises, 6 to 8 hours sleep and 5 meals ready to eat. Of course, I'm concerned about the 45 pounds of gear, whether her pelvis will survive the weight on her small 5 foot, 110 pound body. Rebecca is my only child. Strong and courageous, she will not give up her dream of joining the president's own. The musicians selected to travel wherever the U.S. president goes. When Rebecca was 8, she began her music career playing the piano. In the 6th grade, she picked up the flute and immediately fell in love with it. She participated in marching band four years of high school and also traveled with independent bands like impulse, competing in showcasing her skills with the flute, symbols, and synthesizer keyboard. Although I had started my own freelance business, I was still having problems earning enough income to be independent, and I was just living under so much fear and sadness and stress that I allowed myself to turn to writing because I just didn't know what else to do anymore. I mean, it was to the point where I was like I'm almost middle aged, and I'm still living way below poverty level. I have nothing to show for my efforts to conform to the system just to get a job and I have very limited options, so why not write just to keep yourself sane? And amazingly, I started to get published in magazines in an anthologies. Granted, there was an immense amount of hard work and dedication involved, but I was actually seeing a return on that, as opposed to anything else I had attempted to achieve over the span of my lifetime. I could spin out so many cliche terms about what getting published meant, and continues to mean, but they are all sincere, a lifeline, a light in the darkness, a refuge, a sanctuary..

I mean most people who know me know that i started out working at a company called gimme five whereas college but before that when a student also at school nyc for me was the absolute must have an odd save off and dish. Dishwasher governed by pair of sneakers and people have michael jordan with the heroes and just everyone was wearing sneakers. Me and my friends would chip into bypass to share them and share parents of have jordan. Fives that were on. Discount in place in brighton that we bought a we went and three as on them now. "I'm Tanya, mostly in Los Angeles, and I'm Rachel Martin in Washington, D C two counts of willful neglect of duty those of the charges against former Michigan governor Rick Snyder and former Flint, Michigan Public Works director Howard Croft. For their role in the Flint water crisis. The misdemeanor charges carry a punishment of up to $1000 and up to one year in jail. They come almost seven years after the city of Flint began taking in water from the Flint River in an attempt to save money. The water wasn't properly treated. It corroded the city's aging pipes, causing lead to leach. Into the drinking water more than 100,000 Flint residents were exposed unsafe levels of lead. Latricia Adams does community activism in Flint, and this was her reaction to the charges against Snyder and Croft. It doesn't feel good. Adam's heads black millennials for Flint, which advocates the rights of Flint residents still dealing with the effects of the water crisis. Accountability is great, but even with accountability, even if Rick Snyder was behind bars for a significant amount of time That still doesn't compensate for the generations of irreversible damage. That is and will continue to happen. But Flint residents Years ago, Sometime after the city of Flint switched to Flint River water pediatrician Mona Hanna, a Tisha started seeing something troubling. She treated a lot of Children in Flint in her patients were showing twice the normal amount of lead in their blood since the change in the water supply. She called a press conference in September of 2015 and warned residents, especially kids to stop drinking the water. More than five years later, Dr Mona Hanna Attisha is now the director of Flint's pediatric public health initiative. And she joins us this morning. Thanks for being here. Rachel. It's great to be with you. Can I ask you to take us back to that moment when you started to realize something was wrong? What was going through your mind? Uh um, I remember the exact moment it was thesis, A of 2015. I was actually with a high school girlfriend, who of all things had become a drinking water expert, and she told me in my house at a Last minute barbecue that Mona the water isn't being treated properly in Flint. And because of that, there's probably lead in the water, and that's the moment that my life changed. When I heard the word lead. It was ah. Call to action. I respect the science of what led? Does I understand that the potent irreversible neurotoxin and and I also understand that lets a form of environmental racism it's The last thing our kids in Flint needed. That's the moment I stopped sleeping. I stopped meeting I lost about £30 and I began this quest to find out if if that lead was getting into the bodies of our Children, which it was, I mean, so now here we are. Seven years later, it's hard to believe these charges now against the former governor. And another top official. What? What do you make of it? Um, it's a bit of disbelief. It's been so long on Dfars. So many people in Flint, this justice delayed really felt like justice. Deny that there was never gonna be this level of accountability. Um, And as a physician in Flint, I never used to really kind of respond to these questions of accountability and justice. There was these criminal cases and civil cases. And as they began, Tonto, practice more and Flint and interact with the families and Flint, I began to understand how critical and foundational the concept of Of accountability and justice really is to health and healing, because without that to happen, it Z almost like a wound that never closes and it stays open and open open and it's been open for about seven years on Dad. Having some level of justice is like a solve. It helps those wounds finally close and it helps the city and the people. Move on and recover you. You've written a book and in it, you talk about the villains in this crisis as being more than a single person, Maurer than one individual. Can you explain how you see that? Absolutely. S o, You know, so many people ask me like, who do you want in jail or who should go to jail? And there's there's not one villa And there's not 10 villains. There's there's many villains on Dis is what I say in my book. I say There are lots of villains in this story. A disaster of this scale does not happen completely by accident. Many people stopped caring about Flint influence kids, many people looked the other way people in power made tragic and terrible choices. And collectively and ineptly tried to cover up their mistakes. While charges have been brought against some of the individuals who are culpable, the real villains are harder to see. Because the real villains live underneath the behavior and drive it. The real villains are the ongoing effects of racism in the quality. Read anti intellectualism and even laws. A fair Neil liberal capitalism and these are the villains that we don't usually notice and don't want to. And these are the villains that poison Flint with policy, And I hope one day we can Go after these systemic villains and and bring forth Judge Justice. What is what could that possibly look like now? I mean, even as you nod to the positive of fact of these charges, where do you begin that larger level of healing and reconciliation to try to address some of those huge issues? Yeah, And that has been my work since since day one from the moment of recognizing kind of this widespread lead contamination, this population level trauma and this broken trust. Our work has been in a very holistic way to mitigate the impact of the crisis and bring forth healing and recovery. You can think of what happened in Flint as as a case of signs, denial and our science help bring speak truth to power, and we're leaning on that incredible science of child development and.

Why The Oil Industry Doesn't Fear Biden
"To learn more on the surface. The oil and gas industry is losing a friend on january twentieth. Donald trump the departing president gave fossil fuels his loud support. President-elect biden supports efforts against climate change yet. Some in the oil and gas industry are feeling cautiously optimistic. Npr's camille mosque. Explains why you might have heard that biden's win could mean the end of the oil industry. President trump warned it. Would some climate activists hoped it would and in the final debate biden himself said this transition from their own industry. Yes it is a big statement and that would be a big change over the last decade. Us oil and gas production has boomed. The shale revolution turned the united states into the world's top oil producer. A lot of that remarkable growth happened. During the obama administration and trump promoted the jobs in prophets that resulted but emissions from burning oil gas and coal are the biggest contributors to climate change. Which is already starting to have devastating effects around the world. So how could biden tackle those emissions step one might be a ban on new drilling on federal lands and private loans. It's a different story. They do not have the power to your sake. Somebody in south texas. You can of drill anymore. Rene santos's with snp global plattsburgh says that that kind of a ban would be significant but not the end of the industry is also expected to restore some environmental regulations. Which again won't eliminate all gas. The big question mark is what a climate bill look like her personal. Don't think it's going to be sensitive radical unless you know the more liberal side. He's a winner of album of the year eight times. I think maybe it's more. And if i have to share all his awards we'll never get to the podcast melissa with her. Incredible focus on customer service organizational skills. And she's an outstanding presenter is another one was a leader in education. They complement each other. So well and their leaders in education and support for an industry that that all of us including all four of us on this podcast loved so dearly. Now i have to admit it's tough for me to do this introduction because i know them both so well and we've shared so much time together over the years and a lot of lass. So let's get to the podcast talk about the challenges of the pandemic working with your spouse growing together as a couple. And i'm willing to bet that even puppies they're gonna come up in the topic to saw jerry. Melissa this is going to be the cue for your lips to actually move here walker business. Should definitely come into it. The puppies has kept us sane. This year that is for sure your to. Let's kick it off with our favorite first question just in case univer listeners. Don't know who you both are. Tell us how you got started doing what you're doing. Tell us about your background. Ladies first well. I started photography. I in nineteen ninety nine. So it's been a long time and just started as a as a side king while i had a day. Job and photographed weddings on the side and on the weekends and loved it and just started doing it more. And more and then i started continuing. My education was going to workshops and conventions and eventually went full time. And then i had a wedding and portrait studio in boston. That's where i got my start. And that's where i was born and raised and Did that for many years. And then about eleven years after that. After i got started and was all settled. I met this ustralian. Photographer met him. Because i went to a seminar and fell in love with his work and completely changed. My work went to his workshop and he completely changed my business and became our bomber career. My favorite is gillian And it was the first time i had met jerry and so we became friends for many years and i would see him at different conventions like wpi and that kind of thing and then years later we after that we reconnected Because in we had both gotten divorced by then and we're working on our own and We started talking. And then i just sold everything in boston. Moved to australia. Got married and we decided to start working together. And that's what we've been doing. Ever since we talked briefly when we first got together about running you know concurrent businesses. Because i had my business setup. He had his but that quickly went out the window. And i i really loved the business side of it even more than the creative side. And no one's more creative than jerry so we actually fit together like a glove when we got together and It's been ten glorious years. Ever since jerry always get my camera at the edge of fifty my first camera and i excuse me fill in love with the croft. I became obsessed shot every genre. Possibly imagine to work out which direction going I did what. I had to do to pass high school but anew onto photographer so i just had fun and played around and did what i did. After high school. I worked at a few camera shops. There was a four year cost that that wanted to do and after a year. I quit that photography coast because that would teach me what. I call the algebra photography and i prefer street-smart. I'm not. I'm not citius. Books might kind of guy. I just want to learn in the action of doing the work and so i did that. I quit and then i approached the studio that was very popular at the time walked in. I said i'm going to hold your bags. I don't want to get paid. Just let me let me see what you do. And i did that for about a year and a half with no pay And then i work for that company for about three and a half years. I started my business. Ninety seven At the back of charcoal chicken to go foods stool In the in the peak of the recession australia interest rates with twenty eight percent Family we lost family home. I'm going home and now the water got turned off guest. Ten off turned off the car. That was my brother's got repossessed. And here i am.
