A highlight from GEN C: Growing A Web3 Brand With Austin Hurwitz, Head of Business Development and Strategy at Doodles
"Gen C is the generation of the new Internet. In Gen C, the C stands for crypto, but it also stands for creators, the connected consumer and collectibles, both digital and physical with on -chain provenance. It stands for culture and characters, the ones we play in games and the companion ones that AI is building alongside us. It stands for community and digital citizenship and the new set of transparent and trustless tools being built to govern them. These are the people who were raised on a different philosophy on how they look at money, how they look at identity, how they look at privacy and how they look at the hybrid digital and physical spaces being built all around us. And finally, how they reimagine their relationships with the communities and companies they interact with. We focus on how brands large and small are building for these audiences. Welcome to Gen C. Avery, we are back again, as always, Gen C, not riding the wave, creating the wave. We have a great guest today in Austin Hurwitz. He's head of business development and strategy at Doodles. He was at Amazon before. He's been in the music business and really understands that ecosystem. So really excited to talk to him. But first, how are you? I am doing great. Excited to talk Doodles today. Excited about everything that's happening in this summer of on chain. Just actually walked past an outdoor billboard that is featuring on chain summer, which is, of course, Coinbase's big initiative, which you talk about. But summer's in full swing, Sam. How about you? How's life in New York? It's humid. It's hot. It's a little annoying, but people seem really happy. And yeah, I think things are great. I'm very happy that I'm not really traveling this month. I know you're all over the place. I have Europe coming next month because crypto never sleeps and crypto always travels. And crypto loves conferences. Crypto does love a conference. So there's a couple stories that sort of popped onto my feed that I thought we should talk about today. The first one, and I know we want to also address this with Austin because I think you guys were helping them, Doodles, with a Crocs collaboration, but everyone loves a sneaker drop. And it was just announced yesterday, Adidas and Bape, the Japanese brand, they're doing an NFT auction of 100 physical sneakers. You get the NFT. It's then redeemable for one of 100 only pairs, which is already going to make it a pretty rare sneaker for anyone who does collect. I know MoonPay is powering it from a commerce perspective. Is there no depth? Is there no bottom to the sneaker NFT ecosystem? Apparently not. Apparently everyone wants sneakers. Always, always, always. What I thought was interesting about that drop is in a world where I'm seeing so many brands look to put the tech under the hood, put the tech underneath, invisible, abstracted, words like that are floating around everywhere. Adidas is really leaning into putting the tech front and center and selling NFTs in a world where I was just looking at the Google trend line for NFTs over the past five years and you could probably imagine what it looks like. Interest has just dropped off so much in the world of NFTs, but I think it's interesting and it's actually quite differentiated that Adidas is leaning into this, really continuing to embrace the NFT ecosystem through their communication, through alts and through drops like this one, which are very focused on exclusivity and almost unabashedly focused on commercialization. Because it's an auction. This isn't something that's $5. I think that's actually why it's like, okay, they're doing it, they're leaning into it, they're doubling down in a world where like 90 % of people are pulling back. Right. So the thing that keeps jumping out for me is in a world of luxury collectibles, where you're seeing more and more younger people getting into that sector, and whether it's sneakers or it's wine or it's watches, I think people are starting to recognize, oh, I can actually invest in things and those assets can appreciate over time. So in that world, and I've actually been doing a lot of deep dives into this through the lens of wine, because wine actually, and I know we talked to LVMH about this weeks and weeks ago, but it's hard to ship wine and store it correctly and do all of that in investment grade wine, anything $100 or over. If you're never actually planning on drinking it, the worst thing you can do is take that wine and take possession of it. The best thing you could do is actually just keep it as an NFT, have it be in a storage facility that's at the right temperature where it doesn't move ever, and then wait until I sell it to you and then you decide I want to drink it for an anniversary and I'm going to redeem that NFT for the bottle. And so I think of that through the same lens, I look at these sneakers that I think there's something down the road in the world where half of my collection is really just a digital collection in a wallet and I don't need to physically house it. And then only when the person wants the physical asset do they get to request it. But a lot of the trading should happen in an on -chain manner that's secure and trust first and all of that. So I do think there's something really interesting. I'm very fascinated to see how much these go for. I'm not someone who will spend thousands of dollars on sneakers, but I have a feeling at only a hundred of this collaboration there's a chance these get pretty pricey. I agree with you. I'm excited to see and I also love that it's an auction so the market sets the price which I think is smart, it's strategic and it also kind of protects Adidas versus what we've seen some, you know, luxury hype drops do where they set the price and they set a specific quantity that don't move. I think this allows Adidas to treat this as a win sort of regardless of market pricing and demand. So I actually think it's a smart strategy especially how far in they already are. And the interesting layer is if you were part of the Adidas alts program of which there's a couple thousand all NFTs out there, any bid you make your bid is increased by 10 % if you hold the alt. So it actually just rewards that there might even be an interesting gamification of if you think these are gonna go for $2 ,500 that buying an NFT for $200 now may be a benefit in your bid thinking which is also like an interesting dynamic. The next areas I So there's two things that jump to mind. The first is Zynga, which is one of the most successful mobile gaming companies is about to come out with its first Web3 game. So they have a studio called Web3 Zynga, I think they're called. They have a trailer out for a project called Sugartown. And it's one where you can use NFTs, you can earn a point sort of currency that the currency itself is not a blockchain asset, the NFTs are blockchain assets. But I did think it was just interesting that the large game studios are starting to pay attention and something where, you know, just think of the people who still 10 years in are playing Candy Crush. You know, there is an unlock that will come of the folks who just love mobile games to play on the subway and planes that might enjoy the fact that maybe there's an earning mechanism to it. So I don't know if you have any thoughts on the Zynga game experience. So funny, I was actually just looking at a proposal for something for one of our partners with Activision, and they of course have Candy Crush. And yes, a lot of people like Candy Crush a lot, you know, millions, probably millions are playing it right now at this exact moment. I think it's interesting. I just don't think we've yet seen that much demand in any of these Web3 games. But if anyone can crack it, it's Zynga. You know a little bit about how the game market works. I'm sure many of our listeners do too. It's not like your first one's always a hit. Oftentimes, gaming companies will need to try a bunch to find that Candy Crush. So let's see, maybe Sugartown is it. It's gonna be exciting. And related to that, the first time I ever heard of Zepeto was through you. Zepeto is an Asian market metaverse. Yes, very large one. Very large one. I think there's 300 plus million people who are on Zepeto. And they just announced a deal with Jump Crypto to take $13 million in seed money to start incorporating NFTs and potentially on -chain currencies into their metaverse. So they're a competitor to Fortnite, to Roblox, to Minecraft, to some of the biggest ones out there just by their sheer numbers. So it feels like this has the beginnings of a big deal. We don't know if it's a big deal yet. But as I think you and I've spoken so many times that gaming may be the way that Web3 gets to the masses, and maybe in ways that they don't even know they're playing in Web3. But I thought this was like kind of a good signal in some respects. Did you have any thoughts about it? Yeah, I bet Rudy Lee is behind this. We should have Rudy come on at a certain point on Gen -C. He has actually been thinking about this for years. And we've been talking to these guys about a bunch of different things over the last two and a half years. But I think that they are looking very closely at what is happening in this Web3 world and thinking about how this can integrate with both their immersive experiences that they've built already and ones that they might build in the future. So I'm excited to see where this heads. I, you know, appreciate that they're coming in now, a little like post hype cycle, because they've been doing their homework and being really thoughtful. And the only build I'd have to what you just said, Sam, is I think it's a compliment. It's not like an or, like you have a TikTok, and you have an X, and you have an Instagram, they're all slightly different. I think the same is true for those like gaming experiences. Like just because you play Fortnite doesn't mean you won't play Zapeto. In fact, there's a lot of overlap between those audiences. Some distinction, of course, and some demographic trends. But I think increasingly, we'll see consumers playing in multiple immersive experiences sort of depending on their mood, depending how they're feeling, depending on if there's, you know, a piece of content that's interesting and exciting. Yeah, I think what you're saying is something that we always forget as consumers, but we know really intuitively as marketers, right? In the sense that, you know, if you were listening to Christina Aguilera during the day, you're also listening to Nelly Furtado during the day. Exactly. And maybe the Nelly Furtado audience was a little cheaper to get, but you knew that that's how you got to the Christina's audience in a more cost effective way, right? So I think that the AND strategy of maybe there are certain assets that are completely tied to in game, and maybe there are certain assets which get access because there's a loyal and rabid community, that I think is an additive strategy that why would you not think about it if you were in the metaverse game, which doesn't mean you have to give the keys to everything away immediately. It just says we're willing to dip our toes in and see where this goes. And then maybe it creates a network effect that becomes giant in our business. Per usual. Brilliant, Sam. I agree. Anytime I drop a Nelly Furtado reference, I... It's spot on. I was gonna say people know how old I am. So it is what it is. All right, Avery, we are going to jump into a break. When we get back, we do have Austin Hurwitz, Head of Business Development and Strategy at Doodles. Really excited to hear from him. And we'll see you after the break. All right, we are here with Austin Hurwitz. Austin is the Head of Business Development and Strategy at Doodles. Super excited to talk to Austin. There's a lot happening with Doodles right now in the world. But first, Austin, just to answer the question, what is a doodle? That's a great question, Sam, Avery, great to be here. A doodle is anything that ignites your creative expression. It's playing a sport. Anything that gets you really igniting your imagination is what we want to empower through doodling. Yeah, it's a joy to work in such a company with a mission like that. But some of them seem to be like, made of vapor, seem kind of invisible. Like I'm just, you know, and I know you've not been there that long, but I'm wondering is like from a Genesis perspective, right? Like doodle is just in my head is creativity in a nutshell, right? So was that kind of part of the genesis of the artwork? Yeah, I mean, for those that know Burnt Toast, I think his entire basis of art is around creativity. And he recently had the opportunity to also serve as a host in the doodle campaign for Red Bull. So he's always been about really expressing creativity through his art. And I think, you know, the doodles, the 10 ,000 generative PFPs are a reflection of that. So it's not just the humanoids, if you will, but it's also ice creams and popsicles and mine, which is a coffee head, which I think really identifies well with my personality. It's highly caffeinated at all times. So yeah, it is very much like joy in a variety of ways. That's amazing. And we will definitely get to all things doodle art. But Austin, we want to hear also about you. How did you get into this world of doodling? How did you get into this role? What's been your journey and what's kind of landed you as the head of strategy and business development at a company like doodles? Yeah, I had a very interesting journey. I worked in entertainment for the last decade. Coming out of school, I went to work at Amazon out in Seattle, serving as the head of independent label licensing for Amazon Music. So I helped negotiate contracts with record labels and get Amazon Music Unlimited off the ground, which is like their Spotify competitor. It was actually in this process that I started to dive into crypto. Before we went live, I had the amazing responsibility of ensuring that we had rights to everything that was going to be distributed, which for anyone who knows anything about music licensing is a pretty tall task because the data is all over the place. You have labels that have some of the data, you have distributors that have some of the data, publishers, a lot of splits aren't even put out into the world before a song is released. And so I spent weeks on end looking at the Copyright Office records to determine if we had someone to pay or not. And that kind of clicked in my head of, okay, I can see a need for decentralization for a ledger, and really sparked my interest in crypto. I wrote a white paper around the licensing implications of crypto back in 2017, and then kind of put it to bed for a little bit. The first wave didn't really work out. As people know from back then, they tried to take a top -down approach, and none of the labels were really biting on that. And yeah, so I ended up working at Amazon Music for five years. I then went down to LA to kick off Troy Carter and Susie Roode's company, Q &A, which is now Venice Music, and operated as the head of product there. So I built the distribution software to get music on the Spotify's and Apple's and Amazon's of the world, took us out of stealth mode, and then actually led our Web3 efforts as that big wave was coming around music. I did that for about two years, actually got into doodles my first week as part of really diving headfirst into Web3. And so I got to meet the founders in Twitter spaces every single day, was going to all the events, and was really trying to actively participate. And then when I left Venice, an opportunity came up where Julian had actually reached out. I was looking to expand the team and felt based on our interactions working together on the music side when he was at Billboard and I was at Venice, we had a great working relationship. So I joined at the top of the year and it's been an incredible ride so far. Love that. We certainly talk a lot about music here. I personally come out of the music industry a long, long time ago. And one of the things I ask anyone who has been involved in the Web3 side of the music is kind of like, what state are we in the evolution of on -chain music? We hear a lot of people wanting to be the Web3 Spotify, right? I think most of people don't really understand the actual logistics of streaming audio and how the economics work and how the server space question and how much amount of logistics you have to be in the music industry. So my question for you, just as a tangent, but knowing that you spent some time in this space is, do you think on the music side, we are going to get to a point where Web3 is challenging more of the Apple Music's of the world, or should we be looking at Web3 and musicians more along the lines of early collectibles and being able to say you were at the first show or you have the first band t -shirt? Where do you land on that spectrum? Yeah, I find myself oscillating between the two and I think it's still really too early to tell none of the products that are out there have really reached product market fit. But I have been really encouraged by the amount of iteration that is happening in the space. I look at a player like Sound XYZ, where they started being this effectively the sound cloud of Web3 and enabling collectors to own almost like trading cards of music as they come out. And they have like rapidly changed and iterated over time where these things used to go for an ETH. Now you can get in for like $5 where it used to be on ETH Baynet. Now you can get them on any L2 imaginable. And I think that iteration is going to continue to happen. I think it's very challenging Web3 for Music to directly compete with streaming. I think they serve very different use cases. I've always naturally gravitated towards the superfan use case. So less of the mainstream, I just want to listen to my Spotify while I go on a run, and much more of how am I developing a deeper relationship with this artist. And so I look at a company like Medallion, what they're doing and really bridging the web two and a half, if you will, the ability to create these fan communities, which are built on top of blockchain, but you can sign in with an email address, they'll create you a custodial wallet, like they really focus on not the financialization of the NFT, but much more of this is how you're going to track your provenance with the artist. So being able to collect things over time, being able to reward you as a fan, a lot of the early discussions around Web3 Music are, this was so great for the artist. And I absolutely agree, but people really had a hard time with how is this great for fans. And I think they're actually nailing a use case when it comes to fan communities that I expect to see a lot more traction on. So that's kind of how I'm evaluating the space right now. I think we're going to see more and more artists jump on board, particularly as they want to have a direct relationship with their fans and fans are looking to declutter everything that they're seeing on socials and build a more intimate relationship with these artists.

"It was like Scottie Barnes versus Fred van vliet, who's going to get more points in the game and now you won't have to worry about any raptors betting for the rest of the year, but those who do like the NBA can certainly find a whole lot to bet on. I mean, it's been, you know, when people talk about Canada for hockey being crazy here and our biggest sport that's been bad on since we launched by far basketball. People, people love to bet on basketball. And so that can't be ignored. I think it's because there's so much scoring. You know, you talk about live betting. You know, lots of people, you could take a team that's an 8 point underdog. And during the game, you could get the other team as an 8 point underdog, and you're sitting pretty. And you're hoping it lands somewhere within 8 points. What question? The play in stuff. Is that the Z grab interest? As opposed to what might be just a tail end of the regular season. Of course I'm trying to connect it to hockey and what that might be. Yeah, well, it's a good point, right? Because here we are, there's still games to be played in the NHL schedule and we're not talking about it. So yeah, I think baseball started it with the wild card and the play in games and the one game playoffs. I think anytime you get a game that matters, highlighted on the schedule, it's going to increase betting. There's no doubt about it. I don't think that the casual recreational better is looking at tonight. The leafs at MSG and is saying, I'm getting in on this game, 'cause you don't know who's playing. You don't know what the motivations are and all these things. So it kind of gets left alone. So yes, absolutely. From betting perspective, Morgan games that matter more highlighted games always going to attract more attention. Good deal. All right, abs, thanks for doing this.

"Like I just mentioned, I'm a thinker. And I think for the Toronto Maple Leafs, there's got to be just one of the key words for them is hatred going into the playoffs, a little bit of hate, maybe a lot of hate for the Tampa Bay lightning, hate the results of the past, and just hate the idea of not winning the series. So if you kind of put all that hatred together, it might make you play harder and just hate the questions of losing and just hate all the stuff in the past and put that some of that hate towards the lightning. Maybe they might be in business. I think there's one thing that sticks in my mind. They got to be really careful. And that's Tampa dry tries to drag the game into the mud. And the leafs are going to show everybody how tough they are. And then they start scrolling and punching people in the face temple do that all day. And they'll be happy doing it. It takes children a lot of their game. Yeah, and to show up and be in scrums is important. And if you want to tell guys to F off, go ahead. But I'll tell you what. If they want to take stupid penalties and the player I mentioned, I'm going to mention just took one the other night, but on the other side of it, if you want to take a stupid penalty, the one of the most dangerous people on earth on the power play is that 86 for Tampa. He will crush you single handedly the way he shoots the puck the way he distributes the puck and the way he creates plays on there. He is one of the best people on earth on the power play the way he just wheels around, and so can be involved in muddy the waters a little bit if you want to. But if you want to do something stupid, that guy's going to make you pay. That is going to be one

"Three days before the Stanley Cup finals, and my body, I mean, it's kind of funny and it's kind of one of those things you look back and it's like, what the hell were you thinking? Three days from puck drop in the Stanley Cup finals and my friend called me and said, I got a buddy from Miami in town and he wants to tee it today and I'm like, I got nothing going on. So this guy, Raleigh country clubs, one of my favorite places in the world. And this guy is in the parking lot at 8 a.m. waiting for me. That's a day off. And this guy, me and him got along famously, and I think we played 75 holes of golf that day. The thing is, we also had 30 bud lights and I'm looking back on that. I'm like, who the hell does that three days? But the other part of it is game one, I got a goal and assists, so I'm like, I don't know. You just look back on that and you're like, what the hell was I doing doing that? Why was that necessary? I mean, there was a ton of fun. I played pretty good. I scored three goals in the finals, but you just think, what if it could have been better?

Eric Welcomes Victoria Robinson of ReAssemble Life
"The joy of speaking with Victoria Robinson. She's a national pro life leader author. She's the founder of something called reassemble a nonprofit ministry which offers abortion education and after abortion trauma recovery for both men and women, Victoria welcome. Oh, thank you for having me, Eric. It's an honor for me to be here. Well, listen, this is so important. And you've written a few books. I want to talk about the books. One of the books is they lied to us, which shares stories from post abortive women and how that choice impacted the lives. I talk about this all the time that we're living in this culture that tells you. And it's an extraordinary thing that there's this narrative out there. It's a lie that if you had an abortion, you should be happy about it. It's the greatest thing, no downside, most women don't have that perspective, but you don't hear their perspective. Oprah never had them on to hear about how their lives were ruined or the pain or the trauma. You don't hear about that. And similarly, you've written a second book. The first one is they lied to us about women and their stories. The second book is they lied to us too, which is a compilation of stories from men who participated in the abortions of their children. I fall into that latter group many, many years ago, and so I take this all very seriously and I'm really glad that you have written these books. So where shall we start? First of all, let me ask you reassemble, where do you get that? What does that mean? The title of your ministry, the name of your ministry. Well, Eric, just like your wife Suzanne, I was a pregnancy center director as well for over two decades. And one of the things that I saw throughout my career and to this day is that people are broken. They're in pieces after an abortion. They've bought into the lie. They've been manipulated at the most vulnerable time of their life by the abortion industry that it's like getting a tooth pulled, which we know is a croc. And so I just decided to call my nonprofit reassemble because I've seen these people in pieces that are desperate to be put back together.

"The NASA minute. With Kevin mason, I've always been told it's best not to talk in extremes. I hate, I will never, things like that. But I just wanted for the record saying I hate shopping for shoes. I had to buy new shoes recently just because my shoes were wearing out, but luckily, I basically live in Crocs, no big deal. I know what I've got to buy. I can only buy certain colors because of my size, so boom, I just ordered two pair done in the mail to me. My wife on the other hand, she's getting ready to head back to work in the office coming up in the next couple of months and she needs new shoes. Because in the last year and a half on her feet have changed. We've all changed. It's not just a weight thing. It's just about the balance of our bodies. I weigh less now than I did at the beginning of the pandemic, but I've been worse shape. We've got to go out new shoe shopping. If I have my brothers, I let my wife go do that by herself. Because number one, I can't tell you what's best for her. It's not a looks thing when it comes to shoes. It's about a comfort thing. It's all about how comfortable it makes our feet. I can't help her with that. I want to help her with that, but I really don't want to go shoe shopping because if there's one thing I hate, and I've always hated it shopping for new shoes.

The Drill Down

"For gas, which is weird, but that's just what happens in that industry. But I've never seen anyone talk about a silver equivalent when they're talking about gold. You have, you know, you mentioned the silver bug in the CEO. You've also got one of the biggest speculators on minerals out of Canada, now a big part of this company in Eric's brought the Canadian billionaire who now owns about 11% of the company's stock fully diluted if the warrants get priced in, which would require the stock to help you deliver about 13% of the company. What does that mean? Functionally. If you've got a guy like Eric's brought, who's no small character. So deeply involved in this company. Right. I think operationally, there's probably not a lot of moving parts going on. I don't think sprout is involved in the day to today, but as you say he is, perhaps the biggest name in the precious metals mining industry he's sort of the Warren buffet of that sector. So the fact that he has taken such a big stake that they have that capital backing, I think it sends a message to other investors that sprout is usually a very good indicator for which companies do we think are healthy, he does his due diligence. He is renowned for being a great student doing his homework about the companies he invests in. So Eric sprouts involvement is just one of those indicators that I would say is flashing green for first majestic. Well, I mean, to say someone is the Warren Buffett of precious metals is kind of like saying someone is the I don't know the Los Angeles Dodger of the San Francisco Giants. Buffett's very specifically said that investing in gold is silly and doesn't make any sense because it's a non productive asset. So I will put that comparison to the side. As I plug my San Francisco Giants, I think I've got a shot here. We've got a big shot. But another, you mentioned Mexico is a good place to mine for silver. And I guess if the goal is getting silver, it is, but these guys have a major beef with the government of Mexico going on. Where the president of Mexico has come up explicitly and castigated first majestic silver for not paying their taxes. Has taken them to court or tried to take them to court for not paying their taxes, and there's a big dispute going on or first majestic is saying they owe taxes on something like $7 million in gains and the government of Mexico says it's closer to 250 million. Which is a big difference. That's a pretty big gap. So I mentioned this because it makes a lot of big difference to the value of this company and probably what they do going forward. If they were to have to pay $250 million in taxes, it would wipe out all of their cash, for example. For rect and there are some potential drawbacks that I think have led many analysts to being slightly bearish on first majestic as you brought up with the tax problem with the Mexican government that does essentially draw back to back taxes that they inherited from their subsidiary that it was doing business in Mexico between 2010 and 2014. Let me paraphrase the new telling me one more on that. Sure. So it seems like the acquired a company that had a really nice tax deal and was losing money. And they inherited it they bought the company and the company, the first majestic silver claims to have run it by the Mexican government and said, here's what we're doing. Here's why they don't know any taxes. This company is losing hundreds of millions of dollars. And so that they effectively had so many losses that when they had gains later that they were essentially netted out to about nothing. The Mexican government says, no, no, no, no. You should have been selling silver higher prices and you actually sold them for. Therefore, we are charging you taxes based on what you should have been taking in not what you claim you were taking in. I got that wrong. Yes, yes. And that is the sticking point as under the previous agreement the silver was being sold at a heavily discounted price plus a 1% annual increase as part of a streaming agreement with another silver minor wheat and precious metals. So yeah, what is a streaming agreement? I read that and I didn't really know what that meant. Yes. So this is a byproduct of what I mentioned earlier where most silver mining companies are not primary silver miners. All the streaming agreement is that one silver company will come in and buy up a certain amount of future production from another mind without taking a joint ownership or any sort of stake in that actual mind, they're just buying some of its future production to create another stream as it were of silver ounces flowing onto their bounce sheet section. In this case, they locked in a price correct and a price was like 6 bucks an ounce. Yes. It was 6 bucks an ounce. Right. And there was this 1% annual increase that was built into the agreement. But essentially, there is a dispute here where the government wants to get their hands on a fairer amount of the being able to tax more of the production than at that lower $6 price. And the company that was getting that 6, I would imagine they weren't very once the price of silver rises a lot higher, they're not inclined to make a lot of silver, but I guess if it's a byproduct of what you're mining for otherwise all the silver is going to come out of the ground anyway. Correct, and it makes some sense to lock in some metal production in the same way that this original agreement benefited the subsidiary company primarily mining that was later acquired by first majestic. It benefited them from having tax certainty, which you know is a big deal. So the fact that this is going to the courts and has not been resolved is probably the largest drag on the bull case for first majestic. And again, I don't care about the stocks, but I do care a lot about this interesting company and how the business works. And it does seem that one of the interesting things here is there are two venues or at least at some point there were two venues that were the Mexican courts, and then there was an after court, which would seem like a more logical venue for a Canadian company mining in Mexico. I agree and it's even interesting that the update to nafta the USMCA didn't make any big changes that would have implications for this particular case, except that it would seem to me that a nafta style court would be the more appropriate venue when you're dealing with not just international investment and taxation disputes, but literally both being on the continent in North America, where the agreement is in effect. Well, such an interesting company and let me ask you just finally, what do you expect in terms of the time frame for the resolution of this case, whether they got to pay 250 million where they got to pay taxes and 250 million or whether they've got to pay 6 million in taxes. Right. I would expect and maybe I'm being a bit optimistic that it would be resolved in the next year or so because as you said that $250 million price tag that represents all of their free cash flow, which first majestic has made it a habit of plowing that money right back into capital expenditure capital expenditures excuse me. Their CAPEX spending and R and D. So as an investor, I would love to see that money continuing to be reinvested back into the company rather than having to sit frozen in this sort of tax dispute. Yeah, interesting. First was just a silver is indeed interesting. So are you ever and you know so much about this stuff, gainsville coins is lucky to have you. We are as well here on the drilling podcast, coming up next. The drill down bite to that one number that tells us a whole lot look the production for this company is just massive. But what is the silver equivalent ounces.

"As a swimmer as a water polo player. They're just, they're just right for her. They still look ridiculous. That is a matter of opinion. It's a matter of opinion. Crocs trades under cro X and they shares rose today and they've gained 241% in a year. So obviously, some people like Crocs. A lot of people like Crocs and crosses. A lot of people are about to like Crocs. The company is doing about $2.2 billion in sales this year. They announced it in investor day today. They're going to go from about 2.2 billion in sales this year to 5 billion in 2026. Now, if they were actually pulled it off, it means to be seen. But they're predicting 5 billion of sales by 2026. How? Digital transformation. I just got those cool chills. Again. During an investor day, I rarely seen and people leave an investor day not to say, boy, those guys really got it together. That company is really doing well. Investor day is almost always a day when the stock is going to go up a little bit because people walk under a cheerleading event. Yeah. If they're good at it and these guys were good at it and that's why the stock was up so much today. But their notion is that and I think this is an interesting lesson for any company selling anything, which is that your customers don't experience your product in the singular place where they might encounter the product that they might look at it online. They might see it for sale at a certain store in person, and they might buy it yet another place online. And so their digital strategy is kind of taking into account exactly the kind of thing for cats is talking about with Oracle with so many of their customers. I don't know if Crocs is an Oracle customer or not, but this notion that by having by seeing the world digitally they can actually connect with both suppliers and customers and customers across all different mediums and different places they might research and eventually buy the shoes, those really ugly. Sandals that you like. Beautifully comfortable shoes that my daughter likes so much. In any case, here is Crocs chief digital officer at a Michaels. Our customers don't shop at any one of these channels alone. And we believe they each play a unique role in the consumer journey, whether that's through product discovery, research or ultimately purchased. Crop dot com will continue to be the best representation of our brand where you'll find the broadest assortment, great brand content in the most unique and exclusive products like collaborations. Detailers and marketplaces help us reach consumers we don't serve through Crocs dot com and often offer value proposition we can't. And in many markets like China, these channels represent the vast majority of current digital sales and projected future growth. Our goal is to create experiences that are as compelling and as brand centric as possible on these platforms. So again, clever strategy, they think it's going to basically double sales over the course of the next four years. That's a lot of sales. That's a lot of sales. It's a lot of Crocs. And I gotta say as a croc's fan wearer of Crocs biases on here too. My bias is out there, but however, my caveat is, do I wear Crocs outside the house? No. I wear them around the house, and I have one pair of Crocs that I bought, maybe ten years ago and they still are great. So I'm not I don't want to replace them. So I don't mean the idea that the sales are going to be that big. I mean, I feel like that is a heavy lift, possibly perhaps, perhaps someone like me of Dutch descent ought to be glad people were wearing clogs. Of some kind. Okay, let's move on. Let's move on. Our guests gainsville coins Albert millman, one of our favorites. I welcome back to the drill down podcast as promised. You've got Gainesville coins Everett millman, and talk about first majestic silver Everett with the stock ticker ag. This is not an agriculture company. But for those of you that haven't looked at the periodic table in a minute, ag of course means silver and silver means first majestic silver, an interesting Canadian gold miner traded in the U.S. with operations in Mexico. That's right. They are headquartered in Vancouver, but the majority outside of one mind they have in northern Nevada, the majority of their operations are in Mexico, which is a very good thing if you are a silver miner because Mexico is far and away the world's largest silver comes from Mexico and by my calculation about $6 billion on street trading. Last year, the production has been coming down the last three years. Why is that? Not a lot, but you know, from like a 198 million ounces to a 170 some million ounces. Right. There has been some changeover in which mines are active. So first majestic is very tightly focused on its core assets. It has four very large mines in Mexico and three more that are basically in expansion right now. So they're offline. They're not producing any silver as they make improvements and expand the mining project. But coming along with that is that they have improved their efficiency and there is some interesting technology they've been investing in that I think makes for a really just very interesting. Yes, so this is going to sound like something like the science fiction I know. But they have, and I like that as an investor, I want to know that a company is not only committed to their core competency, but that they're also expanding into the future. And that aligns very well with how first majestic kind of presents itself as a major backer of the youthfulness of silver into the 21st century economy. So getting to that technology, there is a new equipment that they've installed at one of their minds . Called Santa alaina, and it's an HIG milling equipment, which stands for high intensity grinding, and essentially what this does is it can pulverize the ore body to such a small size that it increases their ability to recover silver from the ore, which is not only kind of a high-tech thing, but it also fits in with being more energy efficient, cost efficient and environmentally friendly. Yes, indeed..

Then you take another shot. If not play passes to the other side or four balls must be played in the first four terms after that each side can decide which of their balls to play. If your balls hidden of a ball you can earn two extra shows. This is the really fun. Part of croquet is about disadvantage in your opponent as much as advancing your own game and that's called the roko and that can be the most aggressive part of croquet. The first of your extra shots must be taken where the ball ended up. Place your boss. So it's touching the other ball and play your shot. The second is played from where your ball ends up. That is the simple rules of croquet. But you know what everybody listened. The scones this of the sandwiches and and try to avoid any nasty grass stains. You always take a stain devil with you. How often they cleaned their specific items and identified the cleanest age group which comes as prize sixteen to twenty five year olds the cleaning most regularly while fifty five plus cleaning least. Apparently we're not put off by bit of limescale as eleven percent of brits have never cleaned the cattle even though all cleaning obsession has risen often being held up during during the pandemic and lockdowns over and instagram. The hashtag hashtag cleaning motivation has six hundred. Eighteen thousand posts and hashtag cleaning hacks has five hundred and two thousand were just watching and not doing. It is another thing. Wren kitchens conducted the cleaning survey found over three million. Brits rally clean toaster while sixteen point six percent. Eighteen to twenty four year olds kleenex kitchen appliances every day. Ten percent eighteen to twenty four year old clean their oven everyday but any fool percent of over fifty five take on the challenge. The same goes for microwaves. Were eighteen percent of the young age bracket clean as compared with thirty percent in the older group. Now i'm not gonna make any excuses here but many people say to clean capitals. Who white vinegar. So you white vinegar let it. Soak wash it out. Boil it up. The trouble is it. Tastes like vinegar afterwards. I do not want my pd chips. Sullied with the taste of vinegar. Now that's no excuse not up catholic schools. But you know these days. The kettles don't have those elements right at the bottom. Where the limescale gavin. So you're not getting as much limescale is nine hundred seventy s. I mean the lime scale back in the nineteen seventies was. Rife but these days you. You're not getting much limescale. So i don't want vinegary t you know. That's not really. I'm not into the whole vinegary taste of short of apple cider vinegar every morning. That is enough in one day. Unless i'm evan fish and chips where i coat everything vinegar but not not cattle..

"Maybe not heard by buying with the real actress the real stars lindsay lohan. I'm just that's my opinion. That's my personal opinion. You're right there right. Not about the fall of a cliff part but compared to lindsay is wrong. Who's your mvp. Obviously gotta be lindsay hand but honorable mention to the kooky drama teacher. We love a cookie drama teaser. On this podcast and we get a great one. We get great one this movie. She's very loved carol kane. Yeah also obviously the the all hand. However i do have a theory. It's gonna be quick but played anyone else. She's low key. Maybe a bad friend. And i think everyone has a friend in their youth like the quieter side. Who like drags you into things that make you genuinely uncomfortable but under the guise of like come on live and have fun and then you was like a quiet more like introverted personnel. Like oh okay but in january makes you uncomfortable drag this girl. Alison pill for sixty seven blocks through new york city and shit and i was very genuinely scared and wanted to go home so you think that you don't have their friend that means you are that friend and i would say and i think in your mid twenties you like learn you're like oh people did things i genuinely didn't want to do under like Radio have fun right. Stay smart quickly the lightning round really lightning this week. Thousands kate guys the amount of hats in this movie. I cannot stress it enough every other scene. there's a hat or ahead accessory. Yes bucket hats everywhere. The little like pays boy. Caps everywhere literally couldn't choose favorite hat but i know millions gonna shout out the knicks outfits. I'm actually maybe going to pick the knicks embroidered accompanying bedazzled knicks hat. It's really good. But i mean she's got. It looks a little homemade. She's got some momentum going on you know. She's walking her coke bottle necklace. Got a lot of shit going on. Yeah throughout the whole movie movie and that plays a pivotal part in bringing sit arthur. You know to his you know to meeting them. I guess in the end but Yeah she's got also what i love. I'm looking at a picture right. Now she had is those arm. Oracle arm wrist warmers arm warmer. Yeah you know like leaves. But like please gloves fingerless gloves. That's like. I don't know why we thought that was a good idea to steal from the eighties. But like i remember that happening back in two thousand four that and then she has another like sweatband wrist arm thing further up her arms and layers literally like four different pieces on top of each other. Really good yeah really really yeah Lastly the two thousands side kick conductor hat better kelsey from high school. Musical or ila is a great question like based like you know bitch. I look side by side. It's it's gotta be l. however kelsey beata tire brands. They just absolutely have to respect that. Like you think of chelsea high school musical and the only thing anyone thinks of is the awful hats hat history has not remembered. Alison pills ella. But like history has remembered kelsey from high school musical and her stupid hats. And i gotta go through the show. True i also again think genuinely allah will go to college and graduate be like oh maybe low that friend. I had goals like pretty shitty so i'm going to take a probably kelsey for musical. Because she liked him. Or i don't know who time. Yeah you're right. You're so right you're so right all right. Shall we wrap this iconic on all right ti- times unanswerable. questions again. two short ones cake. Go ahead guys. I just really. I'm concerned about the crocs situation that is happening in our world. I was hoping it would be like a really quick little phase and then everyone would go back to making fun of crocs but that has not yet happened and bullets. Yoga has made it worse. My question is balenciaga. Made crocs stellato's. I wanna know why that is something that should never exist. And i know that they made it because it should never existed into. The people like myself would be sucked in and talk about it on their podcast and guess what it worked however if you look at these pictures it's literally a crock with like us. Stick on the bottom. Not even creative. It's literally just a crock with the stick on the bottom. They also made like platform crocs boots and they've already made like wedges crocs and i just i'd when will it end i don't i'm so worried. Anti fashion has gone too far. And i just think. I think the teens have been sucked in and i worry for our future also on that note of it being a stick if you look at the photo and you zoom in it it looks like it is the same material that i think it is. It has to be that is made from the crock shoe. And if you know anything about crocs if you've even felt that you don't even have to wear them. They're they're bendy so i'm worried that when you put your show and you put even a little bit of weight not even your full weight on it. Like a core of your weight. You'll break your ankle. Yeah i would hope that they would have some structure but you know what know. I don't know honestly if you put these on your feet you deserve whatever happens. So trout speed All right next one kind of curse your nightly kinda just needs to chill. I don't feel as strongly about this as if this came out in. Like may of twenty twenty. After we'd like ben in full lockdown for like many months you'll calmer about it now. Have she still needs to not like the she told. Harper's bazaar the uk that her quarantine closet and how she spent quarantine was. She wore chanel a difference. Chanel outfit every single day of quarantine. Okay and she put red lipstick on every single day and she addressed her kid up in chanel every day. And i get the her. Basically reasoning was like everything is so scary an apocalyptic outside like what are. What's the point of these lovely things sitting in the closet. It's important to be happy for the kids during this time which i get in theory. Howard doesn't openshaw every day when so much terrible things have happened in the last year. Mike you shouldn't have said that that no one wants to know that that you know. And then she said her husband were his quote array of peacock colored gucci suits every day while the mom and the daughter while she and her daughter were in chanel. and again. i just don't. I just don't find that necessary to announce to a world full of many different people who are struggling in the pandemic. You know like you know. Just keep that to yourself. I would say i when i saw this on there i was like okay. Cure nightly has had like a chanel everything since two thousand seventeen partnerships with them. She's like the face of them. Whatever so i was like okay. Maybe she's just like doing free promo personnel but then the thing about the suits their gucci so like you didn't have to say that and like she has to have a team that knows better than this. This is relatable like you'll love to hear this. This is like one of paltrow. Caved ate bread. Like it's not. You gotta know better. Plus cure light nightly not doing so many interviews. We barely hear from earn. I like irl. I wanna hear from urban gonna say this once every four years not anyway. Tough all right. That's it that's the end of the pilot. Thank you so much kaya who produces the show every single week. I'm thinking i'm kelly i'm canola..

"On got chaos. I absolutely cringe through it. But also like i can't believe this is the best thing i ever seen. Wow also my only interaction prior to this movie. This is another highlight. Was that my childhood friend. Like our young childhood friend had the soundtrack to this movie on a cd in her mom's car and i vividly remember looking at the cd seeing all the faces of lindsay lohan on it and to play it constantly the Teenage drama queen song. That is part of the movie. Somehow like i mean. I'm a i guess i was nine in two thousand four so that as young as i could have been by imagine it was that year. I remember like everywhere to this song. Just bayside having heard it like multiple times in this car. It's great the songs. Gray yes the. Dvd is still over my room steps away for me at this moment at age. Twenty seven i. I know there are some like the music in this well. I think it's so funny. He's like there are a lot of like mid tier hits in this Movie that were used in. Of course we have to. You know say something about the iconic use of simple plan's perfect when she's like crying out just like us who who decided to put those two together your genius thank you And also the person who wrote this is genius because the character of lola who her real name is mary but she's like you know what i changed my mind. I want it to be low. Because mary just doesn't doesn't work for me. And that's iconic. I think that inspired the lady. Bird script. T be honest so greta gerwig meet to pay the screenwriter and then also i think she inspired. I think the character of lower inspired like anna sarokin. You know the for. She's just trying to be a socialite and stuff and it makes it. Lindsey makes it look so much fun and it's just like yeah. I do want to aspire to be a gift or queen so inspired me at that age. I was a land this. He gave me the building blocks to be like a dramatic. Ask seattle. you read a couple of my diarrhea. And i truly think that watching this. I was like holy shit. That is how my mind works it because everything happens to her. You know what i mean into no one else. She like every she makes. Everyone else's lives revolve around here which is probably just classic teenage girl but definitely i probably took a bit too much of this and was extremely dramatic as like a preteen at one point. Lola goes on a hunger strike. Because your mom won't let go to new york shields a funeral for the brand cup of this band. Yeah every class in friend she has. Her dad died just to make it sound more interesting I have a theory about her character as like an actual friend that later. But anyway as like for the dramatics and the theatrics i feel like she really nailed it. Yes. it's also said just an iconic megan fox role three years earlier. She debuted this type of character in holiday in the sun. As like a is rich. You don't know who i am. Type character. channel debt worked on it now. It was just a full force in this movie. She was fuss no funny she funny some of the lines that they gave her like. Those glasses are so ten minutes ago like those things that she deliver so seriously was just phenomenal. Yeah see she kind of talks like that anyway. And i'm not saying that she is a mean girl but like just. The other day was watching an interview. That she's done. The kelly clarkson show that was actually really likeable but she does kind of have this diction in her natural voice where she just like. Kind of like okay true. It's just like kind of part of how she talks. Fits these roles so perfectly like it. Seems like she was like overdoing it a little bit. But then you're like no. That's literally just how fox talks. Yeah she was funny more roles. Yeah yes also just an iconic lindsay lohan year in history. It's two thousand. Four mean girls comes out this year which is so mind blowing. We can talk about that later. What has aged the best in the worst but crazy goodyear for her. I don't know that this confessions of a teen charlene was up to par also as impressive but anyway shed mean girls. Her first studio album speak was released in two thousand and four herbie fully loaded with becoming out the following year eighteen. Choose just like the queen of that time queen a two hour. Yes one hundred percent all right. Let's do some lowlights kate again. I just feel like i keep bringing this up every podcast. But i felt a little attacked by this movie as someone who has recently moved from a city to not a city not a big city. She's moving today jersey. She's like looking at the cows and like in this neighborhood and she goes. Oh and her mom's like it's just grass and she's like it's all over the place weight again as someone who's been walking around indiana Going on weekly target runs as the highlight of my life. I'm there is grass all over the place and that's pretty much it so i just felt a little attack. I also have said did not put this in here. But i felt a little attacks by the fan girl culture in the meaning as someone who is a fan of k pop groups. That have been disbanding lately. I am the funeral. Like i get it. I feel that a little bit. Yeah so yeah just like a little bit attacks. That also i gotta tell you. There's like a love interest in this movie. She kisses him at the end of the movie. And i was like are you like have. Do we know your name. Learn your name in the sand. I we did it sam. But i'm just like she the rockstar comes to find her. Guess he has issues but also you could fix them a lot older than me. Not that i know. It's it's you're right. I just was so bored by fucking. Sam i was like. Why are you here like you don't need to be here. That when she's like no to sit. Arthur and then she like makes out with the rando sam. I was like this isn't a good ending. Sit are there's a frigging creep..

"And everything all the time. That's the internet social media anything and everything all the time apathy tragedy. We're gonna play the whole version of that. Which i guess is little saucy during our podcast that we do right after the show. It's called one more thing if you haven't ever checked that out. Armstrong and getty dot com. Catch that i always entertaining so many tweeted. This out of volkswagen's twitter account. They've had different twitter account for every country. They're in and they're all twitter. Twitter logo is a rainbow this month. Because volkswagen's up with the gay people chair courses fantastic and they got their twitter From all over. France united states everywhere all twitter. Volkswagen twitter do by no rainbow on that one. So if it's convenient for you and makes you more money than yes but If you would get death threats for it no in other words you have no actual stance anything. You're just pretending to take brave stance. Yes so a couple of pieces over the weekend that i didn't read them entirely. But the point is that A lot of folks are starting to realize. Wait a minute. y'all are just kind of pandering to us and trying to manipulate manipulate us into buying your product Yes that is correct. Federal judge with the big old ruling. Friday after we went off the air. Federal judge california found the state's ban on the sale a our fifteenth another popular air fifteens and other popular rifles violated the second amendment judge roger benitez. He said this case is not about extraordinary. Weapons lying at the outer limits of second amendment protection the band assault weapons quote unquote bazookas howitzers machine guns. Those arms are sold are dangerous and solely useful for military purposes. Instead the firearms deemed assault weapons are fairly ordinary popular modern rifles. This is an average case about average guns used an average ways for average purpose. That's very true. They can be used to shoot up a school. But that's not a reason to take away the best varmint rifle that exists right. You wanna shoot rabbits for instance well. And there's so much that's just tribal and silly about this because you know we've wedded out listeners. Appointed can get virtually the same gun. I mean that is california compliance and door alter one that is and he's it's it's an effortless law ought to get around so it hasn't had any effect but i saw a bunch of people on twitter over the weekend reacting to the to the the ruling with the predictable Do day predictions blood running in the streets. This judge is is a monster blah blah blah. Just it has no significance. This is kind of cool little perspective. You handle it no archaeologists and think this and there's a picture of forty five thousand five hundred year old cave painting over forty five thousand year. Old cave painting could walk over evidence of human storyteller. Storytelling i'm glad to show is almost over because my ability to speak is completely left me. I hope the caveman walmart were more clear Let me know when they make it. An nf t. Yeah no kidding. That'd be cool you know. I've seen some old cave drawings and stuff like that. And i'm talking about old cape drawings but forty five thousand year old cave drawings of pigs you can't even comprehend it of tanks said no you can't comprehend it. Was it the three little pigs. Is that the story. They're telling forty three thousand years before. Jesus i love puffing blue your cave in its prehistory. It's pre pre history. Yeah pre-vet by a lot. There were human beings that from everything we know we believe. Were every bit as smart as we are now and all the same needs and wants and desires. I mean they clearly recognized how pigs were awesome. So your pictures of pigs on the wall by pigs. Let's draw picture of a pig. it's raining outside. What do you want to do. Let's all right all right. Why not you do the snout. I'll do the tail. So it's the earliest human storytelling. But there's no plot can't explain the story is it. It's gonna be it's netflix special. Armstrong and getty. You have disappointed me for the last time. These are your final area. That's pretty good. Gotta the bucket on his head. Here's your host. "Straightforward application of us law. Yeah that's what a lot of them have been calling for for years. Let's just apply the laws. We've already got if you don't like him. We'll change them. We'll talk about changing them. Let's enforce the law. It's a straightforward application of the law again unanimous decision by the supreme court which generally requires an immigrant to have been lawfully admitted to the us. Before you can become eligible for a green card the fact that you needed to expects hail the carbon dioxide to speak. That sentence is amazing to me. The decision of can't sneak in awe us. We go to make your citizen now. This is an interesting kind of spin from the hill Spin but true. The decision handed illegal victory to the biden administration who found itself at odds with a number of democratic lawmakers immigrant rights advocacy groups. So that's true. Yeah they're absolutely under pressure from their left flank to just throw away the very idea of a border. Yeah wow unanimous. There are four hundred thousand people currently living in the us under that situation. You know it was. I had quit the experience saturday evening. I was watching the news and washing feature people pouring across the border and the cartels in the rest of it and just these buses full of people day after day after day coming across the country and us saying well. You got kid with you. So i guess you're in for good then i go to dinner and meet some lovely folks who are brits who are now in the us living in the us and they didn't actually talk like that and possum bourne breeze. We don't have any pudding. Pardon me loose. Doesn't putting if i might get to my point. These people he was a lawyer. She is a something to do with like rehabilitation medical rehabilitation Post operative that sort of thing thoroughly lovely people and they briefly detailed incredible struggles. They've had through the years trying to be allowed to stay in the united states and the yin and the yang of is enough to make insane. Yeah it really is. This is well. Let's it's lawlessness. This is what you get with lawlessness. I'm there are more people that are what's got hashtag now. Does it have ashtray get. You'd have ashtec. Knockout conspiracies emerge after a suspicious. Floyd mayweather logan paul video. Have you seen the video. Because i just read about it. When you see the video floyd mayweather last night. Hits the youtube star. That star clearly crumpling and the very strong mayweather like holds them up and just keeps them from falling over until he gets his wits back about. So it's seems pretty clear that made weather knocked him out almost knocked him out and held him up until he got his co. his conscience back. What do you suppose Was going on there. I don't know who knows what they're agreement was between the two of them behind that. Say exactly where. I was going sean. Your theory it's better for business. If i don't embarrass these people that i'm trying to fight if i if i put on enough of a they say hey i went the distance with a world champ. Right you get more of these fights. He said prefight that. I've retired from boxing. I haven't retired from entertaining. He's just cashing checks okay. And he made a couple of million dollars. Yeah i get that i get from. Floyd may get from. Logan paul's camp white listen. Don't humiliate the guy. This is just brand building. We're gonna pay you butt load of money to help build this guy's brand right floyd floyd gets it. He's a pro Okay yeah i wonder i wonder well the whole thing was obviously an exercise in cashing checks and only that so well interesting general grievous all the way number ten. You say sean staying. I've never heard any of these names before your mom giddy and he was in the Was in the mandalorian. That's the reasons he buys. He was in the most ronald show. He's at three no reason you should be that high. Great novel thrown. I understand why you wouldn't necessarily know him. He was based largely in the Kind of the ancillary books. Not even really a george lucas character but a brand salon thron ran to admiral thron inspired by sherlock holmes and legendary military strategists. Alexander sees. you're killing me with this just killing me. So we've said for years at number eight. I'm done on yes you are. You're done before. Please stop so we've said for years that thomas friedman's written some great stuff about the middle east but men when it comes to domestic stuff. He's insufferable not only that but he's got this adolescent thing where he falls in love with ideas and then just goes crazy describing how wonderful they are just he gets all enthusiastic and hormonal about various thing. If i may step in here. Because i think i know where you're going i used to watch. Charlie rose every night. And tom friedman ought be on. Charlie rose comparing notes on open robes. That sort of thing regularly regularly given his speech about how much better they've got it in china with their government. How amazing it is and wouldn't it be great if we could be like china. He did that all the time. And i always watch. I think really. Are you really saying this. Yeah yeah well jonah. Goldberg actually had a piece in the dispatch. Which deals with some of the tom. Friedman stuff goes back to the progressive era on the twentieth century. Woodrow wilson and all those people. They were incredibly racist. I mean they believe the government should have all power to do anything at wanted. There is no such thing as the natural rights of man the only rights that exist on earth are the rights that the government says you have and that they should have the right to toss the constitution just perfect humanity. They were monsters a lot of the heroes of the democratic twentieth century but anyway. Fdr had some some pretty bizarre thoughts in that direction too. But anyway in oh five. Twenty five thomas. Friedman wrote dear god in heaven. Forgive me. my pin is my sins. Not fins he's not a dolphin he's a center. Forgive me my sins for have been to china and i've had bad thoughts. Forgive me heavenly father for. I have cast an envious eye on the authoritarian. Chinese political system were leaders can and do just order that problems be solved. I cannot help but feel a tinge of jealousy at china's ability to be serious about its problems and actually do things that are tough and require taking things away from people dear lord. Please accept my expression of remorse for harbouring. Such feelings amen. And then in his book the world is flat. There's all chapter titled china for a day in which he explains how awesome it would be if america could have a chinese style dictatorship one day a year. Because then you could impose your will on the country and jonah. Goldberg wrote switching his piece. Why it's as if the federalist papers with all that stuff about checks and balances divided government and the need for cooler passions. Diffuse power. were brilliant. The one mistake madison. Hamilton and jay made was not specifying that all that stuff should the government for only three hundred sixty four days a year on the three hundred sixty fifth day tyranny tyranny day policy makers could do whatever they want. Yeah tom premium had go on all the time. About how in china if if she decides wasn't she at the time but if she decided now we need to bridge here they build the bridge in like two weeks and it didn't have to go through all the crap that we have in our government. Well we used to be able to do a lot of that. Read an article the other day about how the empire state building was built in about a year. And now there'd be no height of the great depression right and now you no way. You could even get the paperwork for environmental studies done in a year. Let alone build a building like a year. No no you couldn't even apply. But then friedman set a little more recently in nine watching both the healthcare and climate energy debates in congress. It is hard not to draw the following conclusion. There is only one thing. Worse than one party autocracy and that is one party democracy. Which is what we have in america today. One party autocracy certainly has its drawbacks. Oh thank you for conceding that tom but when it is led by a reasonably enlightened group of people as china is today it can also have great advantages. That one party can just impose the politically difficult but critically important policies needed to move society forward in the twenty first century so after surveying policies friedman said are one party. Democracy is worse and by the way that's during a time where the democratic party controls the presidency the house and the senate by wide margins. He was complaining about the republicans which is odd but there are and the aclu thing we were talking about a little bit earlier. There are absolutely signs that there are people on the left who believe they are so righteous and so right that they should be entrusted with installing a china style. Single-party rule friedman that was not an idle mental exercise. He was fantasizing and praising the reasonably enlightened people who lead china. It will which was ally. We now know that was kind of the apex of us believing that they were going to be good guys. Well that the problem has always been you. Make somebody a king you know. The wisn benevolent king is the best form of government. But you can't count on wisn. Benevolent king And if they're wise and benevolent when they take the throne. They won't stay that way that just humans at work sometimes they become villains perhaps one of the top ten star wars villains. You just don't know why do you keep bringing them back up again. I just kind of like playing with fire annoying trying to do their a cadillac. Walking up to the line now set aside the performance that adam driver did for kylo ren there's no reason for him just on the character alone. He shouldn't be number eight on this list. He's gotta be top five minimum boba. Fett we get out of the top five. No idea what. He's talking.

"Money to them for years. No longer does somebody pointed out. That fire is now more. What the aclu a sale you used to be. What's fire stat- fire the foundation for individual rights in education yet. They are more the aclu now than the l. u. Is this watch dot. Org is doing some really good work in that area too. And isn't it interesting that it's once again like the new york times a newsroom. It's the internal stuff. Aclu they got. The young woke stirs who say no. No no no no. We don't want to defend free speech just speech that agrees with us because they're evil over there right you know and i had a long discussion with my son about politics and society in the internet and all sorts of stuff last night it was very enjoyable and i was also convinced that in spite of some his hipster rock and roll oregon outward. You know not appearance. But just he's he's definitely got the hipster rock and roll guy thing gone but his his politics are still thoroughly grounded in reality even if he disagrees with some things. You know the with me. He's he's very sane about it but we agreed that principle is wildly out of fashion. And that if your tribe is advocating one thing or another the principles that limit you and that's the crazy thing about principles they are inconvenient The nobody cares about him anymore. And the idea that the aclu that aren't now listen to people. We disagree with that we agree with. We're going to defend people. We disagree with maybe even vehemently but they have the same rights we do so it might be uncomfortable. But that's why we're here. No that's way to harm. Vague offended the nights. The nazis right to march the k. K. k. 's right to march but they won't defend donald trump supporters. That's a line too far. That's that's interesting. So here's a a bit of a debate. Got going on twitter and social media between jake tapper of cnn. I kind of generally like and chris wallace of fox on whether or not they should have guests on that promote the fact that the election was stolen though the people that believe the election was stolen and jake tapper has decided he won't have on any guests who are gonna make that argument because why give them a platform. As his argument chris wallace went with the i have them on so i can question them harshly on it which he does. He'll have people on and say. What proof do you have that the election was stolen. Show me approve. You know that sort of thing. I thought that was kind of an interesting two different ways to look at that right. It's it's a principled argument. It's a judgment call this particular particular topic out of it. Any topic right could be any topic right. Indeed i was just come a trying to come up with a couple of different examples. I mean if there was somebody who for instance was going to argue that lunatic at yale that is a particular race that is genetically inferior in indeed. You can tell by looking at the color of their skin there. A psychopath i would not interview that person for the purpose of knocking down their arguments. Probably because it's just so insane and ugly. I wouldn't want it to air interest. But it depends. Yeah i was thinking. I'd like to have her on and say what the hell you talking about. Once it achieves the prominence an attention. It's gotten then that changes the equation. It's a judgment call because you do elevate people by having him on. Yes absolutely think she'd fit more into the category of like people would accuse us of nut. Pecking she so freaking out there. Yeah yeah choosing somebody to try to represent the other side. That's not representative of the other side. 'cause they're so crazy but yale had them speak at their child development center. Let's see if we can come up with a different term. The nut picking maybe during the commercial break at the same time though. There's absolutely value in prosecuting. Somebody like that. It's a judgment call. I appreciate the two of them. Having that discussion i think merely having the discussion is useful. I don't think either one of them's automatically wrong. No mcdonalds a judgment call. Yeah and then. Ideas are a dime. A dozen is everything. What happens when you do have them on the air if they end up using it as a way to increase their following among fellow nut jobs then. It probably wasn't a good idea. I am prepared to make a blog post. How each of the strategies in their own way is the quickest pathway to nihilism. Okay fantastic. Now oh boy. governor kate. Brown of oregon is going to end the mask requirements. It's your move gavin newsom. Are you going to be the last governor in america who recognizes wearing a mask on your vaccinated is freaking stupid. Are you going to be. "Right. 53% of people between 18 and 24 state crocs are fashionable. And that is the highest of the two age groups. I told you 47% of people between the ages of 25 34 believe they are. Fashionable. Then I guess they didn't bother asking anyone above 35 because the wear anything Including those old man, White Mall, walkers, shoes those are fashionable to about 45 years ago. Yeah, but Oh, yeah, 45 years ago. Now they're fashion, which in an ironic sense do what's the exact same thing is crocks. They're those sort of things are fashionable for younger crowd because They're just so effing hideous there, and they're making fun of the older people by wearing them sort of kind of it's it's always done in an ironic tongue in cheek kind of way, you know, it's like wearing The ugliest thing in your closet and just being cool with it being like, Yeah, I'm that frigging awesome. I can wear this hideous Ask clothing and you'll still think I'm cool. Did you ever see the Christian Slater movie called Cuffs? No. I love that movie. God's A good movie has me a television and by the way, so, um In the movie cuffs, Christian Slater plays Sort of a a kind of a cross between like a security officer and a police officer. That's too much to get into to explain why in the plot, just trust me on this, so he's gotten he's gotten crossed with some bad guys. This one bad guy shows up to his house to kill him right? And this bad guy has horrific fashion sense. It's sort of a running joke throughout the film. One of the shirts at the bad guy wears Is a T shirt with his own face on it. See, that's that's fashionable these days. It's hysterical that make that It's about pushing the limits of what you can get away with its about. I've got so much effing swagger that I can wear whatever hideous crap I confined, and you will still think I'm bad ass. That's that kind of mindset when you wear things that are just so Ugly and frankly, I genuinely think that close kind of a pioneer in that I agree. Cloak. And where anything? Well, damn near anything. I hate his stupid guy Fieri hat. But, uh He can wear damn near anything and pull it off just because he's got that kind of confidence. If I were to wear half the stuff that Chlo War I'd feel like an idiot the entire time and people could feel that they can feel it. They can see it. They can smell it. Like low he could wear a pant leg on his head and look awesome. Oh, yeah. You try wearing a pant leg on your head? No, not gonna happen. One of my exes is like that where she could wear damn near anything and still look good in it and If I were to try and wear that sort of, like eclectic mix of stuff, I'd look like a dumb ass. You mean like the luxury? Yeah, I've tried. It doesn't work matter how hard I try. Props for the attempt to your Russ Martin show afternoons on 97 1. The eagle just like that one time I got I got a little a little tipsy and try it on. Some of terrorist tank tops. I don't work out. "The Maison with Kevin Nation. I wouldn't say I'm a slave to Fashion. I don't worry about designer Brands although I do wear a lot of Ralph Lauren Club only because it fits, I've never worried about the logos on my shirt or the logos on my pants or whatever shoes I was wearing but sometimes you gotta shake your head and wonder about people's desire to wear trendy things. And the thing that really got me thinking about this the other day as I was driving down the road coming back from an appointment, it was 80 some-odd degrees outside and a car comes flying by me on the interstate and the person is wearing a knit ski cap. And you could just tell they were wearing it because it was fashionable. It was stylish. It was cool. It was I don't know what it was because I can't imagine wearing a knit cap unless my ears are cold. I've always had a specific look, I've had my own style if you will, and that stuff to do as a fat man, but I've always found a style that were raised me and people notice it and people recognize it, whether they like it or not, but at least they're kind, but being a slave to Fashion. I can't imagine how tough that's gotta be. I'm blessed that I tested Be My Own Drum, and yes, I leave him or Crocs with a suit. I'm not a slave to anything else.

How GM Built A Car For The Moon
"Before mankind got so much as a sputnik into space, we were already dreaming of what cars would look like on the moon and other planets and the one thousand nine, hundred, fifty s Collier's magazine profiled german-born American rocket scientists, Verner von Braun full name and Verner Magnus. Maximilian Freiherr von Braun. and his Astro Utopian Masterplans for America to explore and colonize the galaxy. The articles were here in one thousand, nine, hundred, fifty style hype with scenes featuring the swaggering title man will conquer space soon. So soon, one of the articles imagined moon exploration that made use of free surface vehicles quote tank like cars equipped with Caterpillar Treads for mobility over the Moon's rough surface power is provided by an enclosed turbine driven by a combustion of hydrogen peroxide and fuel. Oil The vehicle was twenty five miles an hour on flat ground. Since gravity on the moon was only one eighth of that on Earth von Braun poetically pictured the space cars would be followed by a quote spray of dust, which settles almost immediately like a bow wave on a motorboat. That's pretty that's cool image that's visual to imagine the tractors. Each weighing ten tons would drag three trailers, a piece of gear and personnel in preparation for a six-week expiration involving fifty crew members. Crazy I love this sort of like blue sky kind of speculation. Yeah that's why Popular Science was one of my favorite magazines as a kid 'cause they always had like crazy tack on the cover and like all this speculation as to what it would be able to do and I don't think much of that has come to fruition. Maybe maybe less impressive but equally important ways. I. There is a shift in what we focused on and now much of the focus of technologies just collecting our data. So we can. That's a fair point. He sold things. It's like we're not focused on like space cars or. Travel are like we don't have like a passenger jet that breaks the speed of sound anymore but. They know what adds to give me and they know how how often I leave my house? Yeah. I keep getting served ads for crocs. I've been looking at them. I would I. I love him. I love mine. I had served that I really agree with because I was a hold out for a long time and I was like crops are dumb and then once I finally gave in to crocs, it was one of the best days. So yeah, there's a the the six week exploration involving crew members. That's a lot of dudes. Like like. I've mentioned going to space before and like like it's always three people you know. Let's what it feels like. It'll be sick to be up in space with fifty people. That'd be more. More, fun. I think there's a lot of that like there's like a a segment of sci-fi where it's like there's only four people in the space craft in one of them is a killer. Yeah. But like I feel that scenario would be a lot harder to posit when there's fifty people. That isn't that the premise of Jason X. where he goes to space I it sounds like something that would do. Yeah. They'd. Like they're like. I think it's the guy with. Hockey masks. Eight foot tall. Can't be too sure. Don't want to jump to any conclusion. Anyway an article in the series entitled Can we get to Mars imagine a similar scenario with tank like space tractors that would drive the living quarters on the surface of Mars this time traveling from a pole of the planet, all the way to the equator. Pretty Fun in

Irony is Out (with Raven Leilani)
"Did the hipster burn his tongue on his coffee? Because he drank it before it was cool. I feel like a grandpa repeating that old joke. But that was the mood around me when I was first getting into like twitter. So much of listening to music or being a consumer of movies or art fashion whatever was about snobbery an irony getting the things I like cool. Weird things before anybody else. But as culture does I feel like there's pendulum swing now in the other direction. Where we're all like you know what rules? Phil Collins. An animal crossing and crocs feeling we just don't have the energy for snobbery anymore. I mean I don't. I want the comfort food of culture. You're right that definitely is more in invoke more so than when I was twenty right but ten years ago and author Raven Leilani is here for it. earnestness is a vulnerable and overt way of interacting with the world I feel like it is a way of of being that is against self protection i. feel like there's this sort of cool practiced earnestness. The kind that is like pretending you're not wearing makeup when you're actually wearing makeup that looks like you're not wearing makeup and then there's real earnestness. That is just your bare pockmarked skin open to the world exposing who you really are. You're Dorky Weirdo self the way I learned to interact with things. I loved was I through fandom that sort of what's beautiful to me? About loving thing and engaging with with other people who love it through that love as opposed to What you don't like about it math what you were a fan of a lot of things I grew up. Playing. Jr. PG. I grew up our Japanese role playing games. Okay. I grew up watching a lot a lot of anime. And my brother too he passed down his comic books to me for safekeeping. When he left the house, you know being able to escape into those imagined worlds and feel feel comfort there and with fandom. Perhaps. Any hesitation I have is rooted in like the old teenage adolescent fear of a when that was private almost shameful thing but it's not private anymore Raven Leilani. Is debut novel. Luster is full of things that have once maybe ten years ago been considered guilty pleasures. Her main character he is a bit of a centralist, a hedonist. You peer into her brain and you have this totally open look into everything. We normally keep private each smarts down sticky fried foods has risky ill advised sex with her co workers she blasts disco music in her rat infested apartment. She's also a nerd and a fan, and she loves all that Dorky JR type. You know the way that manifest in the book is disco. Manifest is fandom is comecon but were you at all? Hesitant. About coming out as like a fan of all this ernest stuff. Yeah I mean I a little bit because I. think that. When you claim the things you love out loud. It opens you up for criticism in a different way. You know it does, and for judgment in a different way I think that's right like you the things the. Ernest parts of ourselves that we keep private. We keep private because we are because we worry about the way that judgment will re contextualised that desire and. Maybe, make it a shameful thing. And so in a way in a way, I was worried but I think I've gotten to a point where there's just so much. I feel like I've hardened I, feel like I've become more cynical in a way and so the parts of myself that are still ernest like I cling to you know the parts of myself that are that are Ernest, I? Feel. It's necessary to to fly that flag because I think those. those joys are are rare and unkind of a few and far between. I mean you bring if there's really interesting question like. Do we need the barrier the barrier between like that true soft part of ourselves and our heart external selves in some ways I want to be like, Hey, the barriers dead let's all just show arse off sides and be Super Ernest now like that's also privacy. Of Two minds and both minds are coming. Are Within the head of a black woman civil I will say that. I greatly. Value my privacy. I mean I do. I think that it there's something about having a safe space that is separate. From the kind of brutality of of the outside world and I really want a world where black women don't have to be hard.
