"Historically Iowa used caucuses to organize their political parties but the state gained importance in nineteen seventy two when Iowa became the first state in the country to cast votes for the presidential nomination and then that became the focus I spoke with professor David read lost chair of the department of political science at the university of Delaware about the differences between caucuses and primaries and some changes in this year's democratic caucuses Iowa Democrats get together in a room and support their candidates publicly something we're not used to doing in most of the country where people have a secret ballot in a primary there are some changes this time though there still be a public ballot but the most important change is that I will call because goers we'll have to decide at the front end who they support with an understanding that if that candidate is what we call a viable that is has at least fifteen percent support they cannot go to a second choice in the past they could so candidates were not viable their supporters have to go to a second choice they have to find somebody else to support the big difference for the public generally is that I was going to report the actual vote count and not just the delegates in the past they never told us how many people voted for the candidates just how many delegates the candidates want so that's going to be interesting because they're not always the same thanks well this a considerably shorten the process there still will be some swaying just fewer people available to be swayed the process is expected to be a bit shorter because the Democratic Party has specified a shorter period for that process to happen and the other thing that we different for many voters is if they wish to leave as soon as their first choice is registered they can now do so because they're going to write their first choice on a on a card and turn that card in in the past we would have to stick around and wait to be counted anti what time is everything expected to wrap up that's a good question in smaller parts of the state where maybe twenty or thirty people will show up to caucus they should be done really within an hour between seven o'clock and eight o'clock how soon the party will report will depend on their validation process for larger places in the urban areas I was sitting as an example there will be some precincts that will have maybe a thousand people there and it will take extra long to sign the millions of the starting really won't happen at seven o'clock and it will take a long time to count them even counting cards so some of those precincts may not report for hours Republicans in Iowa also caucus tomorrow that sort of getting overshadowed by the democratic process president Donald Trump of course is on the ballot but so too is former Massachusetts governor William weld and former Illinois congressman Joe Walsh in downtown Bethesda construction of a long planned capital crescent trail tunnel.
