"Baseball games last night. Cubs rolling along behind Alec Mills cheese Guy's been fabulous, gave up two runs to Nick Castano's In Cincinnati, and that was it seven shutout yesterday. Cubs went to nothing. And I loved again, David Ross. Not being wedded to. He's my closer. I got to give the ball the correct Kimbrough because I don't give it to Craig Kimbrel. What am I saying? David Ross absolutely says that a Joe Madden impression is that what you were doing yesterday, you say wasn't professional. And now that's the voice. I did not say He wasn't professional. Yes, you did. But that's the Joe Maddon voice you're using. Well, who is that? That was just mean. Maybe. Maybe in funny. I I'm just telling you Most managers would have gotten on paying him $68 million. That's my closer. I got to give him a baseball. What do you want me to do? I can only put out there who they give me. You know that voice that you do? It sounds like you're pinching your nose as you do the voice, But you're not. It's quite the skill. Isn't that how he sounds standing? Yeah. How do you do that? You're like, you know, like it Sounds like you're pinching your nose easily. I'm not pinching my nose. All I know is that gave me a 16 million Now they're closer. And I got important man. That's what you want me to do. What I like to do

"Find the channel's ESPN 1000 Chicago The phone number for your phone calls at 3123323776 As we're talking baseball with you and Jessi, right off the bat. You were at Wrigley yesterday to experience The Cubs playing baseball in a field with fake crowd noise. How was that experience? It was weird. It was really weird. First of all, I do not joke with the intake person this time when he asked me have you had shortness of breath? I didn't I don't make it crack so good. You know, I mean, like before I said that. Yeah, I walking down from the El Stop. I got a little shortness of breath. But that's only because I'm out of shape. Not because of Cove it so I didn't make it. I didn't make it crack there. But my temperature was 98.3. This time was 98 the other day when they took it so well up there, all right, but not so are the Not near the 100.4 which would send me home. So any anyway, so get in there. Remember, this was a delayed practice. Cubs were waiting for their covert tests from Sunday to come in all negative. They have not had one positive test among their players. Amazing, absolutely amazing when you think about guys around the league getting tested positive, including on the South side and mention McAda during during the promo earlier, so they have their full team out there, except for Anthony Rizzo, literal lower but little lower back tightness, something he's had in the past. Even though he slimmed down. He still has that every so often that that there was a correlation between his weight. I don't believe in this lower back tightness. He's had it at different points of his career. So he was out again. Nothing too much to be worried about because he's had that before, and always Come back. Fine. So they have this interest squad scrimmage. Craig Kimbrel takes the mound in the first inning probably gives up a single. Then he gives up a homerun to Wilson Contreras. Chris. I'd love to talk to you about Craig Kimbrel. Maybe in addition to what we talked about, but as Brian steps in to lead off the game, of course, he's the Cubs leadoff hitter. You start hearing the crowd noise, and I'm looking around looking for the crowd, you know? And it was there wasn't loud, but it was no simple. I mean, everything is noticeable right now, with an empty stadium. In fact, we have the audio and the most telling thing. And Chris Brian mentioned this and zoom call the other days. You can absolutely hear the crack of the bat. You know, You didn't always hear that before Words crowd noise, Even the players said, say it's louder now with nobody around making noise. So you absolutely hear the crack of bad upstairs. You hear the crowd noise? At one point they were piping in. Let's go Cubbies that chance you know that goes on there, thrown that in there. Or walk up songs. They were using the scoreboard, which is kind of weird, because just you know means is weird. The whole thing is weird. Let's face it. Andi can't decide and we can ask her listeners. I can't decide if I Sort of like the crowd noise and it was almost like it's not a calming thing. But like it made you feel like you're you're just used to it. You know, instead of dead silence, I'm not sure I haven't decided yet. So maybe we should play the audio and let people you know it's not the same listening on the radio as being there, but I think you'll get the gist right and behind the scenes. I have been told that this is fantastic Audio. Our production staff has sold this Jesse that you captured great audio from Wrigley yesterday. Bryant the single off of Kimbrel, Here's the natural Audio from the scene. Hold on bill solving coughing in the background. I It may have been going well, Let's take another Listen, Jesse. This was sold from you to our production Staff. Eric Ostrovsky days, Arman. On myself that this was great audio. Listen for some, which is coughing, clearing their throats in the background. I mean, it's just just.

"Wow I'm gonna say no shot because they have no bull pen arms of any substance other than Craig Kimbrel who had a bad year I had a bad finish to his time in Boston so I'm not commits which guy that is so yeah I'm gonna say just that deal no shot I would say it's a shot just because without getting all baseball nerdy on you and diving into all of the advanced metrics I feel like they're not it was a better player than Kris Bryant right there are not is a better player justice going your first opinion when she said that he's probably a better player than Bryant better fuel there for sure right better feel there for sure his numbers at Colorado outstanding his numbers on the road take a major deal yeah yeah but hot summer in Chicago at Wrigley he could probably figure that out I I give that so if if you're trading Brian away for prospects in in in more help to kind of build within the roster and then you are able to replace that Brian talent level with someone like air nado I would say yeah shot yeah what I would say is if you could say the ma'am okay will take the two hundred and thirty million dollars left on his deal and get you to take Jason Hey words money back which is about ninety six million sold your soul saving them a significant chunk of money a hundred and forty fifty million dollars however it worked out and then you traded Brian got prospects back then all in is Colorado he spends zero dollars and they want to cut payroll so give me a good prospect get a or not I'll give them a word and then trade Bryant yeah I would be more than willing to try and do were you surprised to see the cubs listed and passes article yesterday I was at work I mean anything around this yeah until I made a call last night so with a well that's the only way that can happen is if they were able to tag a bad contract going back yeah take care and idols yeah but like in the column he mentions to teens cotton comes in cardinals cardinals cubs serial central no matter what when I read that yesterday afternoon I was like well that's interesting I've been heard the cubs being like sniffing around a star level player like we kind of heard some loosen Mookie Betts like what would happen with him in in the article it mentions it Mookie Betts gets the free agent market if the cubs would be in play because almost everyone baseball with big money would be in play for bats next season and in the off season Hey I just saw was interesting yeah right the a little bit surprising I don't think it will happen but that would be a path Jim Bowens gonna join us at eleven ten we'll discuss all these baseball funds so I'm looking forward to that all right gentlemen the NFL playoffs are a mere three days away cannot wait love the divisional round so let's start previewing it with this question to Sean walks in one in one in the NFL playoff games Patrick Mahoney is also one in one in NFL playoff games these are two men that were drafted had image by right pace they face off this weekend in the divisional round of the playoffs so I ask you guys shot or no shot to Sean Watson's N. C. H. championship game experience gives him the edge over former MVP Patrick my homes this weekend yeah I'm gonna say no shot simply because I think the Kansas City Chiefs have a better team but I wouldn't count the Texans out JJ watt is back to Sean is like Michael Jordan in football cleats as devils twenty put him so certainly I think that they're gonna battlement playing tough but no I don't think that championship experience gives him a decided advantage.

"craig kimbrel" Discussed on Baseball Tonight with Buster Olney
"Sarah Langues is a reporter and producer for LB calm and Sarah, a lot of people in baseball. Sure, going to be very curious to see what Craig kimbrel brings the table for the Chicago Cubs during his preparation to get to the big leagues throwing in the minor leagues. His fastball velocity was about ninety five miles per hour. But he's, you know, a lot of times, especially with closers, when they're in environments with is not high adrenaline. You're not necessarily going to see the best fastball. And this is someone who when he's at his best he can throw ninety seven ninety eight miles per hour. So I'm going to be curious about where its velocity is. But I think more importantly, I'm going to be really curious about where he's command is because that's what really scape him down the stretch last year in the postseason for the Red Sox. What do you expect? Yeah. I mean, I think that it's important to temper expectations kind of as you're saying, you know, we saw with, like Chris sale this year, for instance. Right. Obviously is the starter. It's a little different, but he didn't pitch a lot in spring training, which is a sort of similar situation to kimbrel. What can Brill is although. Umbrellas had sort of less practice and maybe keeping up with things and it took him like a monk to get into the groove. And now he's pretty much Chris sale minus maybe yesterday. And I think that it's going to be really interesting to see how that plays out for reliever because we haven't really seen that with someone quite this high powered with these kinds of expectations. I would definitely be a little concerned that his first few outings, may not be exactly what works -pecting, but I think overall this is just going to be a huge steel for the cubs overall. We'll see. All right. Let's play the numbers gave number three. Number three is five so the Orioles allowed five home runs the pilot on Wednesday. It's the tenth time this season that the Orioles have allowed five or more home runs in a game that set the record for the most such games in a season in MLB history. They set that record on June twenty sixth breaking Tiet nine with the twenty sixteen rents again for the entire year. So the oils have allowed a hundred sixty five home runs this season in twenty fifteen which was recently home runs have certainly exploded. But twenty fifteen was very recently there were thirteen major league teams that allowed fewer than one hundred sixty five home runs for the entire year. This is the Orioles one hundred nineteenth season of existence, and they've already allowed the twenty second most home runs in any season of their history. And obviously, there's a lot of years where. Weren't quite as many home runs this year, but they're going to shatter the record and is not a record that you want. Number two, number two is four hundred and fifty two. So that's how many feet friend mill race is first home run yesterday against the Orioles went. It was the Padres eighth four hundred fifty foot home run this season. Which is the most into majors, they had just five four hundred fifty foot home runs all of last year. So last year, the Rockies lead the majors with sixteen four hundred fifty foot home runs, which probably makes sense. With course field and everything. And no other team had more than six four hundred fifty foot home runs this year. We already have two teams with more than six the Padres, and then the Rangers who have seven and three other teams are already at six the Rockies cubs and pirates. So it's interesting, it's really kind of just these extremes like the long home runs or maybe going longer, because the average home run distance this year has been four hundred feet on the news, which is just over three. Ninety seven from last year. But there was four hundred feet was the average home run distance in twenty seventeen. So it's not like we're averaging four hundred twenty feet on every home run. But there have been some very long home runs this year. Number one, number one is a hundred sixty to begin keys have now, gone a hundred sixty two straight games without being shut out a full seasons worth of games..

Craig kimbrel toss to one-two-three seventh-inning through eight pitches struck out one and he's been getting in the rhythm of facing life hitter to record. On and off for months. Not that I've had. "Speaking of everything for less, that's sort of the situation, Craig kimbrel in Dallas Keiko who finally signed as free agents after the draft. So as we've seen these, these are really good pitchers. They have really good resumes to put together, and it took forever for them to get signed as we go forward and nobody likes to talk about this, and nobody likes when there's labor issues disrupting the things they want to watch, which is a distraction from the real lives, which is sports how big of a deal will this be in your mind? When the next collective bargain green is discussed between the players and the it's definitely going to be huge because you see now more. So where with free agency guys are signing later, and later and later as you see two guys with the resumes of dollars a Craig kimbrel are signing almost halfway through the season. Right. And coming. Later and later. So it's definitely going to be something that's going to be addressed. I think at the next bargain in what we keep talking about the baseball union being the best union in my sport of football got so criticized at times for the union head for being too friendly with the league now the union had maybe being to butting heads too much. And it's always been a tough relationship. Why has the baseball union, which you were part of for so many years been successful in a lot of things they were trying to do? I think it's been successful because it's it's been the players. It's been what the players have wanted to try to get relate across their ground. I mean obviously you go back to ninety four when baseball before base before ninety four when baseball was considered the most popular sport in America. Then you have the strike and just kind of took baseball off that top tier for top second, but that was the players sticking to their guns. And that's one, one of the things that with this union, it's such a strong union in terms of the players standing up for themselves and getting a getting across whatever it is. They want to get across to the ownership talking to Ryan. How're with us in studio here on goal can window. So now as far as these two players, obviously, we talked about it. Heikal going to Atlanta they're trailing the Phillies right now in that division. And on the other one Craig kimbrel going to the cobs they're tied with Milwaukee, I think in there. So as far as the rest of the season goes, obviously a little bit difference in roles. But do you think this makes one more of a contender them? The other going down the stretch, I think it can potentially help. Both teams obviously you're getting the guy like a Craig Kimball where the cubs are coming in where their bullpen is kind of struggle bit. You know, they got a four one four Yara they got a four to seven yard in the ninth with twelve blown saves so kimbro coming and being a seven-time all-star with a career one nine one ERA is God, it's definitely gonna come in and help bolster. Now, my concern with Kimberley's. You're coming in, in June. So it's a lot different, you know, when you're training, you're working out and doing all that to where you come in, you know, obviously, he's going to go down to minor leagues. Get some innings and get some work, but it's different when you have to face major league hitters same thing without sky..

"What's the bigger concern about Kimbrell is it the rust from not pitching, all these months? Or is it the way he closed the season probably a little bit of both done going into the post season last year? We thought to things the Red Sox could not win it all. If a Chris sale wasn't horse in criminal couldn't find themselves. Neither of those things happen Red Sox still what at all Tom. You guys touched on it in the open. You look at the strikeouts innings pitched the walks. Over three hundred saves the back of this baseball. Does you this card tells you he's been the one of the best in the last ten to fifteen years, not with that are there consume conservative course are one thing that we have seen more so than ever? There aren't very many early on Rivera's. There are many Trevor Hoffman's do it every year. You're seeing the same guy over and over. Because a little bit this year, a roller Shelvin wasn't looks a little bit last year. It's the fickle world of that night thing with that, son. I the reason I think it works for the company. Craig kimbrel. It's never struck me as a guy that likes to pitch multiple innings, and I think the way that Joe maddening he meant just kind of old school conventional way you back, everybody up now, scope will be comfortable in the eighth inning. If multiple options. I don't think the cubs are going to ask him very rarely will they ask him to get more than three hours. And I think that became an issue with the Red Sox last year because they were they were really trying to put some things together. And I don't think Craig Kim is very comfortable pitching more than three out safe. But I don't think the cubs are going to ask him to do that very often anyway, then police act from the MLB network. Joining us Lynn Sylviane ESPN, one thousand the big buzzword in the NBA or buzz term. Danny is load management guys are pitching or playing less. In order to be better when it's go time. So do you believe that maybe the rest whether or not he's rusty at the beginning? Could alternately help kimbrel in the cubs down the stretch one thousand percent. I really do because every reliever you're gonna go through two or three scratches a year. It it happens with every guy on every team where. In the month of may. You're in like eight of twelve games in their highlights games, then you'll go for a couple of weeks, where Doppler -tunities aren't there? You're picking games innings worth it. Normally those don't go very well very rarely. Do you see closer? They need to get a day's work. Like it ain't a couple of runs or it's an inning twenty seven twenty eight pitches. And it's kind of that, that the sword you walk on his manager. Like, do I want to get him in to get him sharp? I think with question down the creek Kimball that the cubs are going to get think right now. It should be able to and from everybody that I've talked to he keeps himself a good steak he thought a lot in the winter in a lot so far early spring and early summer. I don't think the arm build up the issue is going to be getting game ready getting that elbowing shoulder firing staff. Switch like it needs to do to throw ninety eight one hundred miles an hour. That's gonna come with time. But I. Think they're getting guy now that they can just load that starting gate and send the right on down the road when he's ready to go. I think he's gonna be ready to go the rest of the way I will say this would Craig kimbrel is on. You're gonna love his fastball ninety six hundred miles an hour. He's consistently ninety seven ninety eight bucks when he's on early. He has a buckling Kirpal trying to curb all that. They can tell you what's coming. And he looked precise each three times in a row. The TD Kimbrell is commanding the fastball in the strikes at times. He last year. He reminded me a little bit of Carlos mama. Remember all marble was four consistent. I thought going to breaking ball precise, that's only fastball for strikes and at times when Kimble's going bad. He gets that way too. But if he's doing strikes, he's going to be as good at really picture. Is you guys have seen the last twenty years to your when he's on. He's the best in baseball. How about that? So they look the cubs have gotten their guy, and it helps everybody in the bullpen Dan police from the MLB network. Did you hear how the team found out the news of the Kimbrell signing? I did not. So we'd happen when they were playing. Right. So story goes, I'm reading it from the tech maybe Jesse can expand on it. The story goes it shorter. Goes back to the video room to rewatch his single. He goes, but, you know they go back and they watch a lot of the there at bats right after it happens. He singles, he goes back to the video room and he. Years, lend Casper's voice over the television announced that Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the cubs are agreed with Craig kimbrel. So according to Jon Greenberg, soc Warburg budding physical. Comedian went back into the dugout and broke the news to his teammates by doing an impression of their newest teammate. Craig kimbrel. Quote went out there and gave it a little arm. Hang he said, so he said, then everyone of fans were even shouting into the dugout Kimbrell you got Kimbrell. So one of those trades that really gets you excited when you find trade assigning these huge boost for this team and I don't think anyone in the bullpen is offended by it, obviously, it allows everyone now to fill a role that they're more well suited to fill. So after hearing what you're hearing. How Jack are you three one two three three two three seven seven six? We'll take your comes calls. What else do you want to do with this team? And how good can this Cup? Team. Be Jesse Rogers is gonna join us in Manno, man. Oh man. The last half hour of the show to there was a ton of NBA finals news. Lots of drama to relay to you. We'll do that all in the final half hour of the show drama at our favorite McDonald's tomorrow. Right across from Wrigley field. We.
Closer Craig Kimbrel, Cubs finalize $43M, 3-year deal
"Big news for baseball fans. The Chicago Cubs signed relief pitcher Craig kimbrel yesterday. He was the Red Sox closer that was still on the market because he wanted a lot of money. And this is bizarre thing, the cubs were able to afford him because one of their players wives is a tramp. So Ben zobrist the hero of the World Series run back in two thousand sixteen the MVP according to divorce documents his wife, cheated on him and they're going through a nasty divorce. Benzel breast has not played baseball for the cubs in months, he's on a personal leave of absence. Meaning he is not getting paid. The cubs can keep that money because they personal leave. So what the cubs of done is take that money. That was supposed to go to Ben zobrist along with some other money, and they went out and got the best available closer on the market. So because Ben's Obama's wife cheated on him. They were able to afford to upgrade the bullpen. That's awful for so brisk. He must be going through something awful, then if he's taking a leave of absence in coming back on it, now it looks like he's not going to come back because, honestly, the cubs of giving away his money now. So it's a bizarre situation and I hate to see go out like that. He was a hero fans. He deserved to go out on better terms than that. But at the same time, I will absolutely take

"I'm not in athletic training. You're not. But if you would like listed, okay, who are ten players in baseball who might be risk for leg injuries. He would have been right at the top of the list, because he's now thirty six years old, and he's got that sort of heavyset and thick legs. I, we'll see how it turns out, but so far early returns ugly for the Mets in last. Give me sixty seconds which thought about the Cup signing Craig kimbrel. Yeah. It's. It'll help help. Right. That it's easy to look at him and say he's not the savior, and I agree with that. I don't think Craig kimbrel is the same player. He was a couple of years ago, but their bullpen needed some kind of help and I think they probably over-paid a little bit relative to what he's gonna do for them over the course of what is it three years in forty five million, or so, that's pretty rich for a guy who's a one inning reliever for the amount of he's going to deliver? But I mean ties into what we're talking about the Mets if you're the cubs your thinking almost entirely about the term, we need help this year were contenders were possible World Series contenders this year. Our biggest tilles he'll as a club is the bullpen particularly game relief options, and he will make them better in that department. There's a chance by year. Three this deal just looks awful. I think they don't care. I think this was one where we just need to get better. We need another bolt on option now. Not wait till the trade deadline, not just cross. Our fingers in hope that the curve. Bullpen works itself out. So I think it's fine for them, you know, acknowledge the money's probably rich for relative to the value. He's actually going to provide over the next two and a half years. Yeah, it could turn out to as you say, if it if they have success in the postseason, it's it pays off. Otherwise could be absolutely flushing money down the drain, depending on whether or not he bounces back from how he was with the Red Sox at the end of last year in the postseason Kate, thanks for doing this. And again, really nice story on Mike trout and he's drafting and encourage everybody to see that at ESPN dot com, talkie later. My pleasure. Are you big guy fed up with clothes that don't fit? Here's a tip head to DSL, anyone can make a bigger shirt, but DSL makes clothes that actually fit. It's all they do one another secret. Okay. "We'll talk to Sarah Lang's I what about the cub signing Craig kimbrel. Let's get to it. Nightingale covers baseball for USA today. We're speaking to them for Phoenix on Thursday morning. And Bob finally Craig kimbrel signs. I think a big relief. Everybody in baseball. At least one of the two big free agents comes off the board. Yeah. It's amazing is taking this mom. I think just a case of price themselves to begin market, and nobody wanted to touch it. I don't think the labor and the draft conversation with that big thing. I really don't. I think it was just people don't think he was worth the money. He was asking. Yeah. Let's face it, if the bedroom versus in how the leave Apso it's the cubs aren't in the thing, either in Graham. Yeah, let's dig into that part of it. It was interesting because I was texting back and forth with some executives with various teams once said to me boy, that is a big risk. Another text me said, you know, nice deal for the cubs, and you would assume that they're logic is like this, a, obviously, they got a big hole at the back of their bullpen. Brandon Moro is playing catch. But nobody knows if he's going to pitch again they've struggled with their bullpen. They have cash available. You made reference the fact that Benz over a leave of absence. I don't think there's any. Any expectation necessarily is gonna come back and play, we'll have to wait and see. But because he's away from the team they don't have to pay him. And so they've got this cash available. They have a number of expiring contracts at the end of the year. And they're feeling might be. Hey, you know what you've got this guy has been an all star. He's been on a hall of fame subject. Three hundred thirty three career saves. We can bring them.

"This scoop out yesterday. The cubs reached an agreement with mobile Christopher mobiles mobile, Alabama mobile Alabama Christian catcher. Ethan Hearn he was their sixth round pick, but he is receiving second round money and he will forego his scholarship to Mississippi State. He's considered the best high school catcher in the entire draft was considered a very difficult sign. But by the cubs, taking someone at twenty seven who was rated a little lower. They can give him a lower amount of money. So the sixth round catcher gets second round money, and he is committed to the cubs. That is a great addition. There you go. So we'll see how it works out. What number do you think kimbro wears? It was forty six wasn't. He thought. Yes. He's forty six. Numbers are my thing is Forty-six. I believe it was fifty six Danny, what number was kimbrel in Boston. I think he was forty six forty six I do take I'm going to say forty six. I'll have to look that up much. No numbers says he's a numbers because I am a numbers. He's been Forty-six every place being goal was four fifty six or fifty eight. I believe tropes, forty six isn't he? Yes. So two stroke give up his number or does kimbrel takers. You're asking a lot of stroke. To relinquish, what was semi his role as the closer here in the in between time. And now the jersey. And I think there's zero percent chance that happens. Does he does? He say stroke, a man how much you want. I'm sure but that happens everywhere. Yeah. I think it ends up. Stroke keeps us number and kimbrel takes new mine. I mean how long how long stroke been around in the majors? Guess how many years I don't know how long he was in Baltimore. He's been cub since twenty thirteen. Okay. And how long's kimbrel been leak while? Yes cameras, a hall of Famer Yama say stroke keeps his number. I think if he asks Strope. Strope has worn other numbers he will sixty sixty four and forty seven so maybe the number doesn't mean that much to him. Yeah. I'm going to say stroke, keeps forty six okay? Those are always the greatest stories like the numbers guys, refusal to give them up and stuff like that creates tips at film ask you something if you're coming in as a new reliever, you're Craig kimbrel. They're like came in Pedro once keep forty six he's like, yeah. I don't even want it. It's his number. I'm not taking it away. A lot of guys are like that. What number would you pick what number would I pick up 'cause I know what I picked ninety nine man. Yeah. I pick sixty nine. Gronk. I think it'd be. Even know what that means. I mean what a juvenile response out of you. I'm gonna take it away. When I like the setup too long setup. If a dollar was the new religion choke you just award away into a dollar. You can I wear four twenty. I'm look for the cricket sound effect. Trying to try to save you here, aren't you? Glad the cubs don't have a stupid beard rule in place. I don't think that was going to stop it. I don't think that's kimbro would have shaved. Okay. Well, but his fans we didn't have to worry about it. Because we should that rule. Now Danny's barging into for candidate two minutes of bad jokes. Okay. Sixty nine as injured asked me what you, I would wear espionage. A drink every day that inside. Why man? SP. Four. What would we wear come on? And give us our numbers. Take time out, Jesse Rogers will join us. It was pretty clear yesterday. I don't think it's happening. It did Craig kimbrel cub..

"Cubs are clinging to a one game lead over the Milwaukee Brewers in the central, but their biggest issue has been the back end of the bullpen. Did you know the cubs are third in major league baseball with eleven blown saves third worst when it comes to blown saves in baseball eleven of them just for a second there think about how different their record could look if they didn't blow half of those games. Let's say they only have five blown saves. You're talking about already getting to forty wins being among the best, not just in the National League. But in major league baseball. And so to address this issue. Theo Epstein of the cubs goes out and finally gives Craig kimbrel. A new home Craig kimbrel who wanted to be a hundred million dollar man has settled, I'm using air quotations here. He settled for a three year deal option for a fourth forty three million dollars. Was it worth the seven-month awake? Well, only Craig kimbrel cancer that question. Seven months of free agency probably a ton of angst. But he'll earn ten billion to go through the rest of this season with the Chicago Cubs, and then fifteen million dollars each in twenty twenty and then twenty twenty one. It's I think a huge bargain for the cubs. When you consider what he was asking for right? Part of the reason that he was unsigned for so long is because it's asking price. He wanted it to be seven figures seven figures, he wanted to be nine figures. It's only eight math. He wanted two hundred million. But there was no team out there willing to give him that. I think it's better to play baseball for forty three million then to not play baseball at all. But what do I know? Hill report to the cubs for his physical on Thursday and the idea right now is that he'll be ready to pitch within two weeks? The scene had made comments after the news broke before he did admit that they had interest in Craig kimbrel, and that it was kind of a bonus for them. This point in the season. There are usually quality free agents. Just lying around. Dallas available. If you missed our conversation with David Samson, former Marlins president, he had very strong words about Dallas Coyle and the mistakes made by kaikal camp to this point, so kimbrel signed, and as soon as he can go. He will be the ninth inning guy for the Chicago Cubs. Part of this part of this plight that they're in with the eleven blown saves is because Brennan Moro. Got hurt last year member all star break. And from that point on the team has scrambled. Different closers, different bullpen guys. They've tried have gotten hurt. And maybe the cubs. Extra money. Because of the Ben's over situation, you would think a team like the cubs will be willing to pay whatever it took. But there is that whole luxury tax threshold and. The way we seen teams dial back and not they're not as willing to go over that threshold and have to pay the exorbitant taxes. Zobrist left the team for personal reasons. He's going divorce. But that was last month and then was placed on the restricted list. And so there's a little money freed up there for the Chicago Cubs. What was the reaction? The clubhouse Anthony rizzo's pretty excited about bringing Craig kimbrel all-star closer on board. Definitely boost..

"But I'm telling you, I really believe this Lonzo is going to be a star helpful with yet. He is my untouchable. Yes. What he does on the offensive part, how he gets the ball, moving ZOA getting everyone into all comes down to lonzo's got to be in the Anthony Davis trade. Anthony Davis is a totally different player than Bradley Beal, if it has to be two or three which I would hate then you, you have to make that deal because of who Anthony Davis is, but for Bradley Beal, no, I don't because I think it's too much, and I think Lonzo is going to be something that's important to this team moving forward and everything that he brings on his defense is elite. He is one of the best point guards defensively in this league. Boy, I would make the deal. No. You need another all star to play with Brian to somehow. So if you can't get them in free agency. You've got brand new Kyle. Kuzma, Brandon Ingram and LeBron. There is one theory, you know, who owns the wizards? No. So who what was the company, you've got mail? Is that America Online? Yeah. Well, yeah, that's Tim Leone SIS right Time Warner. Yeah. I think Ted Leonsis at one point known them he owns the wizards. And one of the theories being put out there is he wants messiah jury the GM raptor? So he's waiting for the finals to end. And then he's gonna throw a big money offer. It you juror well in that case. That would have to happen really fast. Right. Well as soon as Drinan shrines out he could do it, but are there are allowed to talk to him before handwriting. I don't think the, the raptors would give them permission until after. But maybe, maybe they would yeah they'd have to move really fast if they're going to cause the finals that we over win July the fifteenth before the draft. No, no June. They'll be June. The fifteenth rent right in there. And then the draft is June the twentieth. Yeah. And you went anticipate that Bradley Beal trade, if you were involved in it, and you were gonna use the number four pick it would be somewhere in the five days. Don't find John over that what can happen, and what has happened a lot is you cut a deal. In order to make the numbers were asked the player one. You just tell them what you want. And you go from that. Okay. That's a Lakers. Get kobe. The Lakers had a deal with Charlotte that if Kobe was still in the board. Yup. When he got to thirteen Charlotte would take him and train him to the Lakers for Voday diva. Okay. Does that happen? All right. Quick update. Dodgers batting top of the seventh or up to one Julio reas has relieved. Has relieved Kanta my ADA and there's jock Peterson. Who continues his his role? He's been so good. All right. With they've been without closer, Brandon Morrow all season and tried to get by with Pedro Strope. So they're also in the mix for kimbrel. "Netting down the foul lines, I won't have access to autograph baseball chances to talk to players foul balls. All those things. And I just think that there is, you know, a core people in baseball who believe. Well, that's the way it's always been. But look, here's the reality of it, too. I mean, besides trying to do the right thing as each team begins to extend netting down to the foul lines. And I think it's inevitable. It's going to happen. It means that the teams that don't become. They are suddenly in a much more vulnerable legal situation. That's what I'm saying. I mean, isn't there clear? Right. Because very clear with public documents look all these teams may change because they're aware that people could be hurt. And you guys didn't do it. And that's why it will eventually happen. Yeah. Yeah. Even now I think the, the liability is up on teams for not for not doing it. All right. Let's talk the major league baseball draft is over. That means it's time for Craig kimbrel in Dallas kaikal to be able to sign their contracts. I have I've described the Kimbrell gambit which I don't expect to happen. But the dodgers would add kimbrel to their bullpen probably unrealistic. But where's it gonna land? Yet, it's amazing because I mean, we all thought that there was a chance that once we got into past the draft and they're no longer tied to draft pick compensation that they would sign. But here's the thing you still keep hearing from teams that they feel like that, you know, the, the, the respective negotiating camps. These players are just simply unrealistic given the the concerns about the individual players. My guess is we sit here today that Craig kimbrel winds up with the Minnesota Twins who have a chance to win. They'd be one of the teams that would probably would make sense for them to consider Craig kimbrel on a multi year deal and a Dallas kaikal, you know, an educated, guess, is that eventually, it will work out, something with the Yankees, I think the Yankees comfort level is a pro rated deal equivalent to what he would have got into qualifying offer a one year contract, and I just don't think there are a lot of teams that view these guys being rock-solid absolute one hundred percent certain solutions. And that's.

"I want to paint. You know, that that's what people lay on a beach, and drink beer. Right. That would be a good thing too. But a lot of those guys do that. So welcome in a beautiful day today. Summerlin day finally we get one of these. We should feel lucky. I know it's supposed to temperatures supposed to go down, though, to now trying to get my part of my driveway blacktop, and I haven't had the opportunity to do it because every day it's cold and it's rainy trying to get some stuff done around my house. Trying to get the driveway improve. Yeah. Well we've got a lot today. So Matt Nagy will join us four o'clock straight up. We're also going to get a report from the bears OTA's today's the day that they allow the media to come in and JD is observing it. He just had a really interesting tweet about the kicking situation which continues to sound like it's going horribly Elliott fry. I guess one of the contestants on the kicker Rama the kick is wrong. His says that we're all just trying to three of us are all just trying to get to train camp. I guess that's where the bar has been set. I wanna has Nagy about that, and do you believe, like, will they select one of the three could they bring in a guy like map Bryant to compete with them? And then if you trade for Robbie gold boom you just cut the other two and you end up trading for guests have a backup plan. Now, my guess is that this is, as we like to say, very fluid thing that there's nothing set in stone, and I would believe anything would be possible. Okay. Now, the Kimbrell stuff with the cops, as many of many people thought that could be a fantasy thing where Ono Ricketts isn't going to spend the money. Tom Ricketts said we don't have the money but the one thing that there's a few things that has changed and to know Ken Rosenthal, who works for the Atlantic. He's also on the nationally televised games, I still believe on fire. Fox, and he's been covering baseball, and as good as it gets all the way around so that the cops are making a push for Craig kimbrel, and any, you know, you wrote about this over the weekend. And that was a tweet. He sent out a couple of hours ago and the things that have changed is first of all the draft is passed. So the cubs would not have to give up draft compensation for signing Craig kimbrel. The other two things that have changed is Ben job. I may not come back. And if he doesn't come back the cubs get salary cap relief. It's not a cap but getting close hero. Really, right? Payroll relief and then getting closer to, to the luxury tax. They'll get that relief as well. And Thirdly, moral may not pitch this year. And if he doesn't pitch, you get the insurance money back into the owner's pocket for hit. Well, he's making a lot of money is not million a year, right? At least that isn't it isn't only ten million two years. Twenty million maybe more. I don't know. But even if it's ten million, and you get the million back from zobrist, whatever it is. I mean that's that's newly found money. And if cargo Carlos Gonzales turns out to be this important hitter now in the middle of the order, we're Benz zobrist flexibility playing the outfield isn't as necessary. I love though, and I want to come back. But if he does decide to retire because he's got real life issues to deal with. Maybe now all of a sudden signing cargo maybe signed Kimbrell, and now you're starting to improve your team in different ways that neither of us ever envisioned. I think everyone if you're a cubs fan, I would think knowing that you need at an arm you'd be excited to see kimbrel. Join your team would you be convinced that he is solve some of the issues that plagued? Him at the end of last year. It's a good question, and it's always buyer beware or absolutely. We've it's only costing you money. And for me to say, but it's not costing you a prospect, haven't we found out through all the signings that signing Brennan Moro buyer, beware signing. Chat would buyer, beware signing Darvish buyer beware, signing Hayward buyer, beware. There are others who have turned out zobrist was a great free agent signing John laster changed everything by him signing here. But we always know that there's risk attached. But if you're asking me would I rather have Craig kimbrel? The bullpen the cubs currently have, or would I not have Craig kimbrel. The answer is I want Craig kimbrel. Take the house, you to kind of set your bullpen up a little bit better to now you don't have to run Pedra Strobe out there too close game. He can settle in eighth inning. God, which then means other guys can fill the seven inning role. In the six or seven, you may have the, the really good hitters coming up his seventh inning that stroke may face now where it's just more flexible and you know they're going to trade for another arm. They do it every year. So if you signed kimbrel, even I'm not guaranteeing that he's going to be great. But you know what I do now is better than what you have bingo that I'd rather take that risk? And we were talking about this in the pre show fistfight. Think about the guys now, some of them worked, and some of them didn't maybe he'd say, both trades worked because cantata still is pretty good and Chapman won a World Series. But think you could have Kleber Torres with Dylan cease any Loy Jimenez. You know, now a lot of the history, then goes away. But those the point here is to sign kimbrel. You don't have to give up a draft pick. You don't have to give up a be level prospect in a level prospect with us money. It's just a risky money proposition. And when you are facing the Milwaukee Brewers who you're only percentage points ahead of when you're facing the grind. That is the central the best division in baseball. And every win is important. And when the dodgers are on this, historically, great pays, they're in pace, I think to win one hundred twelve games. And you know you have to get through all of this. You have. To improve this team. Plus, you're also look your your, your arms are a little bit older which means the back half of the season. You may have to throttle down a little bit, which then means your bullpen is going to get even more taxed so you know it's not a shot at John, Lester Cole hamels or any of them. But they're you know, you may need to, to limit how many innings day throat that major bullpen has to pick up the slack, a great point because Joe Joe spoke about that and the press conference where he's trusting Hendrix more. Now, remember, my thing is been let them go a little bit. They don't have to pitch on June twenty pitches like Wainwright did the other night. But let Hendrix go to one hundred and five if he's your best option. Let last or go, and they have been letting them go longer. But yes. Towards the end of the season when you gotta lineup your rotation. You're going to rely on that bullpen little what I think the point Miller made early in the year about what the dodgers have done, which I think has been really. Beneficial to them. They've got a bunch arms. They trust. They kind of rotate guys in and out of the injured list. Don't they just in terms of starters? They have like eight deep and they maybe like seven now with injuries and such, but they they'll give them phantom injuries where guys like rich. Well Richhill actually started this. But what happened is you look at the, the usage of retail over the last few years, Richhill, former cub whose what thirty eight now. I think. Yeah every now and again gets blister when he pitches. He's good. He's not good. He's one of the best five pitchers in baseball. If you look at his area whip. So it's I mean, that might be the new and you're your alternately looking to giving twenty five starts here. And what does that do alternately come Tober when you want to be a playoff team, you can trust? The guys aren't going to wilt because they're just giving you too much innings during the regular season. That's what I mean. The cubs have to improve the dodgers are scary. Good. You're in meet grander of a division. The brewers are really good. Every game is important. You know, this is a team that goes through some slumps where the bats so when they do hit, and you're in a one run game do you want to trust the bullpen to finish off the seventh eighth and ninth with a pen you currently have, or would you like to add Craig kimbrel? I think the, the answer is obvious, not giving up a draft pick and all. All you're risking is Tom Ricketts his money, when he could be getting some of that money back right now, considering zobrist and moral situation, three one, two, three, three two, three seven seven six. Do you believe that this is a slam dunk? Will you be mad? If the cubs, don't close, if they don't close on the closer coffee's for closers, will you be mad? If feel gets beaten by the brewers for Craig kimbrel or the Braves or one of these other teams who are in it. I think maybe the rest will do him. Good coming off a few months off three one two, three two three seven seven six. Hey, why would you ever risk having a manscaping accident? Take it from me. Mr Mann scape. It's something that you never want to experience..

"When you try to execute a series of those deals. Yeah. That's fair. At a I think that's that's completely fair. And these offices are are, you know, not only smart, but there's there's a discipline that they bring, you know, I do think that it's one of the things that shifted, and I don't know that it's it's a good thing every single time. But there's a I mean, it's really clinical and disciplined, and it is it is so process-based. I mean, so process we were gonna stay in this process. Meaning is a free agent on the market. What do we all you that free agent that we've Al Youm at us years for X amount of money? And if the AJ comes in says will we do it we've out you him at plus one year and plus the team million dollars. Thanks, great to talk to you. Never. Again. I mean, like, I I'm saying that extreme matter. But there really is that aspect of it. There's just no emotional because I do think I think every once in a while where it's law is you're better off with the player most of the time, or at least a lot of the time. You know, what I mean that that like it's where it gets interesting like in credit Kimble's case is. These teams make the decision they build a team they say it'll take ninety one wins for us to win a playoff spot. And we built a team that has good enough to win ninety two and a half game. And Craig kimbrel would add a win or win and a half for the rest of the year. I've just I'm making this all up, but they they are not if they built it if they say the playoffs will take ninety one win did they built and team that will get them ninety two and a half when they are not interested in giving them in paying to give themselves a buffer that may increase their to like once they're past the threshold the Natal's see value in adding that guy more often than now. And I think that at times that can be logged. But I'm, but it's interesting is heck, and I and I respect it. I really do. I totally agree with you. We got about four minutes. Left along those lines of what you said we actually got this bleach or tweet for you. This is from Schultz at bench dolts twelve. He writes, boop said last week that teams use analytics to know, exactly. How many wins they need to win their division? Does that mean team such as Colorado are Oakland resigned to competing for the wildcard or they just hoping to catch lightning in a bottle bougie want to answer that? Yeah. I mean, look, I think that there is a matter of what there is. There is certainly a matter of what. What they'll say externally? But there absolutely is known as having projection on how many games that they will win. They were aware that they may not win that many games. I mean, for example, the two thousand thirteen Boston Red Sox. I believe their internal projection system had them winning like eighty six games ended up winning. I think ninety four and women division. So again, it you know stuff. But yes, they absolutely sit there and Billy beam David forced have built a team that I would assume is saying they're in house projection is we're gonna win X amount of games. And they have a projection that says the Astros are going to win more games. So like for sure they're sitting there saying our way in that we built a wildcard level team. And my guess would be the Jeff right? It's it's the same thing this year. But they I don't believe that. They that they built a team where their projection system says that they're going to win as many games at the dodgers. I think that their expectation. They're not it's not like a hundred percent of the rest of their patient is yes, they'll be competing for the wild card. Not the division. And as we speak negatively, it's time to talk about the Marlins, okay in April, or I don't even know who you are anymore. I I know can have can be done in the face by beat..

"This is how it works in today's game. You don't you don't play from one run like it did in nineteen eight TIMMY last time. It happened was nineteen sixty three curt Simmons last pitcher to steal home. Wow. Very good guys that I mean, the internet is a powerful. Funnier you pretended to no. No, it really cause your lies aren't what fuel us around here. Tim kirksey. Did that's the place that you decided you wanted to tell the truth, it's all the places history of our relationship together. That's where you thought, you know, what it's important that I go with the truth that I'm stealing material here. Tim Craig kimbrel. We were talking about this yesterday. Is there a kimbrel in every bowl is was the question because I was saying is he still the hardest thrower. And they were telling like how is the hardest thrower not pitching in there. Like there's one in every bullpen now. No there is not a Craig kimbrel in every poll pants, and he's he might not be the hardest thrower in the game when he plays. And there are lot of guys like him. But to say, everyone is hard as him would be inaccurate. I remember Matt dyas once told me that he faced Craig kimbrel and he said his ball literally rises in the strike zone. And you know, physically that's not supposed to be allowed to happen. His physics teacher sister rose told that impossible for a fall to rise like that and Matt diet elevated with all due respect to sister rose. She never face Craig kimbrel. His stuff is ridiculous. And he should be pitching in the big leagues and their tons of hard throwers. But he throws so hard that Johnny bench one of his teammates told it is fly catch before every game. I I can't play catch with you at or. Throw too hard. It's no fun. I get hurt doing it. So I'm not playing catch with you anymore before the games. Dallas gyco. What the hell him and him and kimbrel explained that Tim easily as you can how are two guys that are clearly valuable pitchers not playing major league baseball right now. Well, they're bunch of reasons in kaikal case people look at him and say he doesn't miss enough fat. And he's thirty one years old. That's not what we're looking for and with kimbrel. They're just not gonna pay a reliever three or four years of big money. This is the those guys are not playing mostly because they're not willing to come down to a number that a team is willing to pay today because both of them are really good. And could really help a team does. Matt Patricia looked like the data at the restaurant who lies that it's his seven year old's birthday. So he can get a free bowl of ice cream. Does boomer Assias looked like the concept art for the Simpsons? A one seed, man. That is a one great does Brett Brown looked like your mom's new, quote, unquote friend who's taking her on a cruise. Brett brown. Always looked like he's just been laid off. Bryce harper. Looked like he spits his gum in a year or known. His Mel kiper looked like the old wise bald eagle in an animated movie that makes sure. Tim. Phil. Dawn, you gotta let me finish. Does Mel kiper. Look like the old wise bald eagle in an animated movie who make sure the young eagles are all being properly. Majestic and proud eagle. Louis you're on with Tim cartoon, go ahead. Jim I was wondering if there's ever been a better defensive middle infield. Then Roberto Alamar, Omar Vizquel. It's the greatest one I've ever seen. Verno Elamine is the greatest teeth pensive second baseman. I've ever seen the typically he doesn't match up with Bill Masire Ascii who one year took part in a hundred and sixty two double plays. And no other second base in the league took part in a hundred think about that per second after as Smith, Omar Vizquel, Eze greatest defensive shortstop I've ever seen. So the second grade assure stuff I've ever seen and the best second baseman. I've ever seen play together for several years. It was breathtaking, and I always always made time to watch those guys during VP or take infield..

"You are wasting roster. Spot on a guy that you've already wasted money on what's worse than wasting thirty nine million dollars on you know, what each wasting a roster spot on that same guy that you've already wasted money on? I wouldn't I understand why he made the big league roster and why you gave him the ball this weekend. I do. I mean, you you've got to try to find a way to rectify his situation. Do it a AAA each with Brian dancing? He was good for you two years ago. Ultimately, that's probably where he'll go. But I think because of the investment they have in him. They're trying to see if he can recapture things, but I don't think that they'll have a very long leash with him. He's never been a bull pin arm Waddell. So if you want him to recapture he needs to start every fifth day, he needs to look you've already wasted the thirty nine million. It's already prevented you from improving your team because the money you spent now would you do now you wasted a game yesterday because he had to come in. And he gives up a home run. Then he walks a couple of people in Montgomery's gotta inherited a bad situation. You're already down arms in the bullpen. Now. I've got to worry about Tyler chat would pitching in the seventh inning. Like you said you're down arms and your bullpen. So you were hoping that he would fill that void. And I get it. He has never he what do you think he worked on in spring training? He wasn't working on being a starter. He didn't have a spot in the rotation. So I get why they had him on the roster. And I get why they gave him the baseball. Sadly, a lot of what you saw last year was on display in his first outing, and my guess is they won't hang with him for very long. But I'm not surprised that that they kept him on the big league roster to start the season or that they gave him the baseball. But you're right. I mean, he continued to show you that he's not reliable. Craig kimbrel. The answer. That's a question and wanna ask cubs fans coming up. Where's your level of frustration? Look, it's three games. We're talking in the context of knowing that nobody's preseason. Prediction is going to change three games in. I ninety three wins Waddell in ninety three wives. We're staying ninety three. I'm not. But when vote Wayne Lakota over to alter the change. Ninety two ninety three the way that team was hitting this weekend. But when you when when you look at one of your top concerns, and they live up to those low expectations, then you say, uh-huh. Uh-huh. And does moral ever come. I mean, can you count on moral coming back and what about kimbrel cap says? No, I want to see what you think Waddell, three one two three three two three seven seven six to toxin base. Let's not ignore Darvish as well. No. We gotta get to Darvish. Hey per missile. Here's story after story of homeowners who say their basement.

"I mean, I wouldn't sign Machado for anything that he's a dog, but above Johnny hustle. Johnny hustle. Doesn't die was was our watching giant offers, Dan, I'm not Johnny hustle. Yeah. It's Charlie hustle. I don't know. I'm not Charlie. Also, either you're right. But there's something going on. And what they've they have realized that they take advantage of the brilliant. Analytics which I I'm all in on analytics, tell us a lot more about the orphanage Tena better. But they're using that as a cover to say, we're not signing these guys, and there's a lot of great players out there that aren't being signed and a lot of teams that aren't trying to win. And so that's collude. Well, okay, colluding would be if they all got together and decide hey, let's not sign these guys because they're asking for too much money. What if it's just a market correction? What did you the market correction where they go? Like, you know, why do we have to pay ju just because the guys somebody Craig kimbrel? Bina? Somebody would assign Dallas Kyko by now. I don't believe that. I don't I don't I don't believe it was collusion before that included before they've done it before. I don't know. I don't know why wouldn't be the case again. And again, I understand some of these long term deals don't work out. We got our pupils in this town to understand their stand that more as well as anybody, but you have to try to win in sports part of the trust with the fans is to do whatever you take with their their hard-earned money you're taking their money in and tournament into a win to a to a winning team. And when he sees and these teams aren't even trying and again, eight of them or more than a hundred million under the luxury tax. So they could spend a hundred million dollars the the game made eight ten billion last year. Ten billion to reverence last year. Now, it's not the national sport that football is but regionally and again, the dodgers eight billion dollars alone on the TV deal. Don't know. I look I understand..

"Yeah. You know, unless something heats up off a quick I'm going to say it's going to drag out another week or two, and I'll tell you what like a lot of people getting worn out waiting for this like a lot of people. I just shake my head thinking these are two reagents that are only twenty six years old how can four teams not be knocking on their door. And I tell you, you know, I was thinking about this Jodi. And I mean, it's the old hot stove Lee is is usually what helps feed fan interest. And it's just been so tepid, I think was your word. Last couple of years. And you know, what it reminds me of it's beginning to remind me of the season. We've reached a point last couple of years. How much are we talking led by Commissioner? Rob Manfred about all the dead time in the game. And is that a problem or is that not a problem? You know, we reached were strikeouts and walks can consist of about thirty percent of e of at ads across the league. And we reach a point where baseball's really examining itself because there's too much dead time during games. Well, you know, what's happened? That's just moved into the winner. Now same thing as we talk about during the year. It's just too much dead time. Baseball's going to have to to itself up a little bit. And it because right now between the dead time during the season and at that time of the hot stove league. It is not generating the excitement that it should be generating. All right. I'll go worst case scenario Harper and Machado both go all the way into spring training. And they take the best deals that they can kinda like what I JD Martinez did last year, and he didn't get a bad deal. And he got early opt-outs if he goes nuts and can go back onto the free agent market. But certainly less than most baseball guys like yourself and me and everybody else who make predictions on these things thought his overall contract was going to be saved happens for both of those guys this Boris is it a world and not just going to let this slide. They're gonna claim collusion. They're gonna say baseball screwing the players they make more money than ever before. Does it have any carryover effect? Or does this is all just spouting from the mount until we get to our next collective bargaining agreement. And then are we looking at a potential work stoppage? Yeah. I mean, that's what worries me is. I think we're starting down that path. I mean, I I don't think you know. I mean look at Evan longoria yesterday. I think it was yesterday. Right. Might have been two days. I think it was yesterday when he posted on Instagram, and it got some playing social media, you know, kind of a plead the team say it's talking about how you know. Look, I can't believe that this many good talented players are just sitting in that there's no action on them. And as you pointed out, and I think, you know, I don't want to say that Instagram post and social media posts was on behalf of the players sociation. But you know, the players sociation thinking the same thing like Goria pointed out that this is dangerous time because as as analytics have. Has moved into all front office offices. What you do when you're value at all the players by computers is laborious point. Was you know, every front office is devaluing players, and they're letting them through computer programs, and they're all looking at this. These are the reasons we should not pay a this a few million bucks to this player or two that player or obviously in Harper Machado case, these are reasons we shouldn't pay three hundred million to them. And I find that an interesting post from my Gloria, I know a lot of players echo that I think the players union does I think they're looking hard at this. We heard so much that last winter was slow, but part of it might be because teams were saving money to spend this winter because we all do their three agents available this winter. And so far that's not happened. That's not to say we couldn't have a last month sprint to the finish line. Where all of a sudden money goes crazy, but it's not looking good agreed. Tomorrow hot stove. And then I want to ask about the hall of fame ballot. Craig kimbrel. Still not signed Machado and Harper the two biggest free agents. I'd say Kimble is probably the third. Biggest left out there. I defended kimbro all off season. Because I think people went nuts, so overstated his shortcomings in the postseason. He did not blow a save in the postseason. He was six foot six in save opportunities. Put run a John Jay Leno run score when they were up by or three game mighty given some red sock fans. But he got the job done. Every single time is his market is slow as it is. Because he was looking for too much to begin with that he really is paying a price for that off season postseason work, or is it just again something in baseball. The Dave now clamped down and said every innings all the same. So we're not paying more for the night. I a little bit of all of the above. I think you know, we heard again, we won't know until Craig kimbrel. Maybe decides one day, and maybe it's spring training or April may confirm or deny remember there was a report in early in the off season kimbro was looking for a ten year deal that even for closers greatest kimbrel. Ten years seems pretty out there because we all know the the most volatile market is relief pitching market. And they're very darn few. Mariano Rivera is where guys is holds. Greatness for ten or more years. So I don't know if that report is accurate, and again, it'll be interesting eventually when we can talk to Craig kimbrel and find out what it is or not, you know, that would suggest maybe he he's he's he started a little bit too high in his expectations. But that said I think there are some team scared off by the post season. I would argue kimbrel had a little bit of a shaky September. And there was some talk that he was tipping pitches. And I think you know, I covered the Red Sox Houston Surrey's. And that's when that came up and the Red Sox were like, we're not worried at all about kimbro we determined. We think he's he's tips and pitches, we've got it fixed. He's going to be fine. And as you know, there's blow save in the postseason. So I think there's a little bit of wariness because of some of the shakiness, but I think that had more to do with tipping pitches than it had to do. Do with you old Craig kimbrough's yesterday's news. So that all that said, I think those are some reasons that I also think yeah, I mean with with front offices again everybody now is is leads on analytics, and there's some that is hey, the ninth innings the same as the seventh inning. No. We don't need to pay a guy that much money just close by Bennie. So I think kimbrough's getting hit from multiple directions on all of this. Got into a little debate on this earlier today your perfect guy to ask because you know, what you're talking about. And be you don't have a dog in the fight. Who's got the better starting rotation going into two thousand nineteen solely for the two thousand nine hundred nine season. If you could go to war with one of these two rotations, which one would you choose to Graham, Syndergaard Wheeler, Matt's Vargas or Severino Tanaka. Paxton hap-, Sobat, dear. That's that's a really good question. I think that that could be a good barroom debate for many many years. I think if we're saying everybody's healthy. Let's assume good health. I make Mets. It's so hard to go wrong. I mean, the degrom and Syndergaard if they're who we think they are the Yankees don't have that as a one to atop their rotation. So I would lean. That's I like the James Paxton accusation acquisition for the Yankees. But again health, you know, he's a guy that has been able to make it all the way through the year. The last couple of years without going on the DL if you can that's going to increase the stock of the Antes rotation if he's healthy all year. But you know, if if we're talking good health all the way around it's hard for me, not veer toward a rotation starts with with Senator Nancy. I went Yankees because I don't know it will matter yet. Neither one is at a full year. Year in the big leagues. And I need to see that. Yes. Grounds. One debatable. Syndergaard and Severino to even if you go Syndergaard second, I take Paxton over Wheeler hap- over mad since about the over Vargas. That's why I went Yankees. But it's really is a one debates. I did you make public your fame. Ballot yet. I haven't yet. I did vote. I haven't yet because wait until closer tell I we're almost to the day Tuesday. But yeah, it'd be interesting. I think obviously everybody wants to know his Mariano Rivera gonna be unanimous. I'm the troublemakers a group. I mean, I will say yes, I did vote for him no-brainer. I'm hoping he's not unanimous simply because I love sitting back and watching debate, you know, what if Arianna Rivera just in at ninety nine percent of the vote. He's a hall of fame or you don't have to have one hundred percent. I think it's quirky that nobody ever had one hundred percent. But I don't know who the guys were looked at papers. I don't think he's a hall of Famer tab vote for him Ted Williams, and I'm not going to check this box. It's nuts that none of these guys have been one hundred percent. I think it's an oddity that I hope continues. All right last thing on a hall of fame ballot. As a guy who has hosted shows in New York here for decades, always said about Mike Messina and Andy Pettitte, both very close. But both just short for me. It at least on the ballot to that been counted that his point by Ryan at not Mr. Tibbs is sitting in the eighty percent. Dial looks like he's going to get in and e pennants in about six percent. I always thought them as of as very similar all candidates. One guy's got ADD. Others got six is it because petted admitted to taking steroids? I think that's what might separate them. I don't know if that separates of eighty percent to six percent that. Yeah. I don't think there's that many voters that hold the steroids against I will say full disclosure, and it's not a secret. Even though I haven't read the Bill by ballots this year, anybody that knows me or his read my columns in the past or see my ballots. I am a hardline around the hall on steroids. And and and you know, I I I don't vote for guys. I don't vote for bonds and Clemens because of that and had it to me, even though he said all I only did it once he falls in the same category. I I don't think I believe in that. He only did it once whatever he admitted it. So the steroid guys who are known users or or highly I said, I don't vote for so pet. It's not on my ballot. Again, not a huge secret. 'cause I go back to my ballot last year. I did vote for Messina. So. So you can probably even though I have publicly admitted yet where my ballots this year. I guess if I both for last year, you're right. Both of those guys have I guess if you argue they're both short, take the steroids away for a minute Pettit. Obviously great October's that you know, his his October performances. Good certainly bolster his case Besina pitched his entire career in the Nash in American League east against those monstrous lineups. I guess, you know, if if you're a small hall guy who you think the the standards should be really really extremely high. Then you're probably going to say, yeah. You know, Messina Pettit are short. But if if you know, if your standards are I'm not gonna say low if they're still really high just a small hall guy, if you're a little bit bigger than you probably think they both get in. Scotty, great stop. She you coming on board. I hope you get some juicy stuff too, right? Right about this week. At least have the hall of fame the comment. Don, looking forward to reading your bud.
