But I think it's reductive to sort of assume that they're not capable of more than this, which is part of why I find this, which is just to me a lot of fun action. And again, I enjoyed this movie while I was watching it. But I want people to bother to put characters into movies because even in stuff like the fast and the furious, even in stuff like James Bond, that are focused on action and spycraft and things like that. You can create stakes that involve people's humanity. In the Daniel Craig Bond series, the warmest relationship in those movies is between him and Judi Dench. And that's what I was thinking of when we get alfre woodard for just, you know, I think two very effective short scenes, she's wonderful. You did say you were gonna quit. It was her life a few places. I clung to the ones I had. Was? Three months. Optimistic. If you utter anything remotely sympathetic, I will shoot you. That was another thing where I was like, oh yeah, I like taking this piece from this other movie and putting it into my collage over here. I think it is telling that we all like the handcuff bit so much, which is definitely the kind of thing you could have done working on a television budget, right? There's all this valley who about this is the most expensive Netflix movie yet yada yada yada. And we took these russos who were working in community working in television where you have to be very innovative and solve problems and work quickly and then gave them the biggest budgets ever approved for movies to make these four marvel movies. I think I would have liked this movie four times as much if it was made on one fourth of the budget. And they had to be a little scrappier and you know because it sounds like the most expensive pieces of this are the ones that we cared about the least, right? That airplane sequence, terrible. Yeah. To me, it also just comes back to the issue that I've had with so many movies these days, which is that so much of it does look like it's done on a green screen or it looks like it's been edited this way and taken through a sifter and just turned it into this very bland looking animated piece that it shouldn't look like. I mean, we did an episode on Michael Bay's ambulance, which I am not going to say is a good movie by any means. And I also found it kind of grating in some ways. But what I did appreciate about it was it was very heavily reliant mostly on practical effects. When you hold something up like that up next to something like this, you know, there's a final showdown between the Chris Evans character and the Ryan Gosling character. And that showdown is supposed to be done at night and then the sun is rising. It's like the sun rises like 45 minutes during the 30 seconds that they're trading punches with each other, which is in the hedge maze from The Shining, by the way. In a hedge base. But that is a really weird shot. Like it's funny that you guys both mentioned that because when I saw that, I was like, wait, is it morning? What is happening? Yeah, it goes from night to morning very quickly. Is it the North Pole? I honestly wondered if that was supposed to be like a time lapse thing or just like this fight lasted 90 minutes. Yeah. I don't think they really thought about it.

Those are like genuinely good movies, but some of his other stuff is like, I don't want to watch the whole movie. I just want to watch when he did the kicks people. Yeah. When he runs up the guy's body. Okay, remember this is why you have to have him in there. Remember in the matrix when morpheus and neo are fighting the first time and Keanu does the kick where he kicks him like three times on the way up? Yes. And then comes down. Scott Atkins does that in real life with no ropes. He runs up. You can watch it on YouTube. He was fighting this giant guy and he kicked some kick some kicks him and then comes back down. He was like, incredible. He's like the do you remember the NBA player Anthony Randolph, where he's like, he's got all the tools. You know, I remember Anthony Randolph. He had all the tools. More than Mission Impossible, more reliable? I just feel like it's got a longer track record. I prefer the Mission Impossible movies myself. But there have only been 6 of them so far. And so it's a little bit tough to measure that against the dozens and dozens of Bond movies. And I think particularly the Daniel Craig Bond movies are well known for being really hard knuckled. You know, like with real well executed, not just big explosive set pieces, but a lot of hand to hand combat, you know, Daniel.

Yeah and i liked the they involved dame judi dench as much as they did in this movie especially because at the time. I didn't really do movie research. I didn't know that this was supposed to be her last wine But i thought it was. It was well done how they you know gave her character and end you know. They brought her in and they. They introduced gareth. Mallory row fines character Well and made him seem like you know. He's got his way of doing things and they're going to be different than the way that an was doing things previously but still made him likable at the same time like that. Shootout scene in the In the courthouse where he grabs the gun at the end when he walks in on q. And tanner and land the fake trail for silva follow. he's like well then hoping. Don't get caught. You know it shows that. He's not afraid he's not so by the book he'll break the rules when he needs to. So i i liked that. It definitely made me appreciate his character a lot more than when when dame judi dench character 'em died and he replaced her. I felt like it. it worked. Well you know introduced him. Made me dislike him than like him. Give him a good character arc to round out to make me happy that he was going to be. Am i feel like he can be a bit of a hard ass though. I'm not gonna lie. But i know that she was pivotal in the old versions of bond and this movies directed by santa mendez who has directed a lot of really really good movies in my opinion So he turned a road to perdition nine seventeen Let's see what else Ajar head american. Beauty's not really looked on super favorably anymore because of the whole Seven casey person don't really want to mention his name. But yes sam mendes mixed mixed good movies and this one definitely had his style. Because i i liked his work in nineteen seventeen. I could see how he volved from sky fall into nineteen seventeen and then It just it felt like spies doing spice stop. That's the biggest cabinet. That i can get it. What would you think guys stifle. Oh it was a it was really good. It didn't feel obviously. It's still a bond movie but it's i feel like it in a way it could have just been. Its own thing like it's a spy spy movie. I like the other ones before this like. They were spy movies but they were more like like action. Spy movies is like spice by one. This one is a real toss up for me between sky fall and casino royale but it was really good. I really enjoyed this one. And i really liked. So it's technically tim burton's a nightmare before christmas but he didn't direct it and ashley's a huge tim burton fan. She probably her favorite director. She seen every one of his movies except for batman in nineteen eighty nine. She bought watch that one. I don't blame her. it's actually. It's actually very fun. All batman is nineteen eighty-nine with michael. Keaton and jack. Nicholson as the joker and billy dee williams as Harvey dent. it's awesome but it's It's an interesting timeframe for batman but a a a nightmare before christmas is is actually very good. I think i. Who's a big fan of this movie soderbergh. Oh of course. I act when he used to blog. Remember those days along thing. And and especially about sean. Everything you mentioned about how it's cut in and shot and the action sequences but yeah the this is like a cult. There's a whole group of people for whom this is a cult favorite. And so i read. Whenever it's most recent anniversary stay interview plays and be and i just got the opinion that he just really didn't care about being james bond or really anything else related to it and just like walked knee even interview diana reagan. She's like yeah. He didn't really seem particularly interested in or the movie. Which i i mean. I guess that's a flex to not be interested in diana rigg. Yeah i mean it would be cool. I want let's not make soderbergh cleanup anybody else's messes again. You know but someone like that doing a one off while they're figuring other things out would be cool. It's a fun idea okay. let's keep this going. Amanda what's your number two suit minds casino. Royale which i was surprised was not on either of your less only jet only to be interesting to i. Would've it would've been if we were trying to not smoke. Craig movies and so i mean it's interesting now because i think i was more pro like pretending a defense or against of something else and now. I don't really know what to say. I think on the internet among the fans. This is often like the cult favorite. I remember a lot of people. A younger age and pierce brosnan was the person that i kind of my introduction to the world of sean connery and this franchise but the dino correct franchises when i was like oh look at the possibility. And look what you can do with this kind of outdated ip and look what you can do this character again when you have someone who can act and i think it is interesting to say what if we explored this person as a person and had ideas and just do this same fund set pieces all over and over and over again or that we could do more. I think sometimes the more has not worked. See the last two movies i think. Sometimes the more really does work in the case of casino allen the best berlin stuff i mean even there. It's true she comes up everybody. They've just really been flogging it ever since but god in the context of casino royale. She's she hasn't been easy in casino royale. I think i for more like the way that the marvel movies treat like. What happened in new york as if that's like emotionally resonates with the people who watched it like vesper. Sadly is one.

"Bong but to become a double. Oh it takes two. How did he die. Your contact not well. Why second is yes. What an installment in a long running movie franchise gets things right. You tend to know it right away. Consider casino royale. The twenty-first james bond film in the eon productions series released in two thousand six and starring. For the first time as bond daniel craig the first thing we notice the mgm columbia studio logos are in black and white intriguing though not the most radical thing in the world then the movie itself starts still monochrome starker darker recalling something more like nineteen sixty. Five's the spy who came in from the cold than pierce brosnan's immediately preceding couple of pictures to say nothing of octopussy in this first seen bond has the jump on trader waiting for him in his office. The mole is played by a snide malcolm sinclair in their tense exchange. We learned to surprising things. This bond has just been promoted to double o. seven. He's recently made his first kill a brutal bathroom beating. That's fed to us in snippets during the conversation with the ruthlessness that cuts the scene. Short bond commits his second kill as sinclair sits on armed at his desk. Cut back to that bathroom. Where bond spins round to deliver the lethal bullet to the first skill and the screen narrows around him in the series iconic gun. Barrel shot familiar but also thrillingly different in two thousand six. I was mostly indifferent about james bond. Atom bond was a relic from childhood which i regarded with nostalgic affection as a daily film reviewer. The run of pierce brosnan movies had begun to feel like professional obligations then casino royale and i was back on board. Still am after this revisit which was particularly interesting coming on the heels of the other bonds. We've been watching and discussing unpatriotic sean connery's from russia with love roger. Moore's the spy who loved me timothy dalton's the living daylights and pierce brosnan's goldeneye compared to those entries. Adam what would you say is the most distinguishing characteristic not only of craig's bond but of casino royale whole I don't even know where to start with that question. It's such a good one. But there are so many aspects to craig's bond. I think we could start with and actually this movie was reviewed back on film spotting in two thousand six sam was our host then co host josh. Not just our producer so he sat across from as i recall. We both were fans of this movie. And both fans of craig. I look back at my notes from that conversation. And i said this is just kind of funny talking about fifteen years later. I suggested that he is a more believable. Interesting complex bond which we need in two thousand six so bringing bond into i guess what i was thinking of the modern era our our current time thousand six well in twenty twenty one. I think that's as true as ever if not more true and you're right that everything about that opening sequence sets the table for setting up a new take on this character. I like the way you phrased it familiar yet. Thrillingly different this idea throughout and we'll talk about a lot of these aspects. I think there are many ways that the movie decides to subvert our expectations bond. But it doesn't do it in a way where it seems like. That's the glee of it. That that's the purpose or the intent of the movie. Let's have as much fun as we can. With this relic. Let's thumb our nose at the series. No it's not about thumbing your nose it is about establishing this new character and maybe we'll get back to that opening sequence a little bit more later. I wanna talk about craig and answer your question as best i can. I think the most significant difference with craig versus all the other bonds is that the movie establishes him as quote unquote a blunt instrument which is apparently how fleming originally thought of james bond again. I'm not familiar with the source material. And it's not something that's informing at all my take on bond or on craig's bond but that that phrase and i think m may even refer to him as that or very clearly suggest that's what he is. That is something different than that kind of very debonair. Very smooth bond. We have always seen there. Is something just a little grittier a little more dangerous a little scarier a little more human or a lot more human about craig's bond than the other ones we've seen including going back to when we talked about from russia with love and connery is just really leaning into the movie star aspect like bond. Is this movie star. Figure in the movie knows. It's kind of winking at us throughout. I'll give you a couple of examples and there are so many we could talk about the distinguish this van from others. But in that opening chase sequence the big set piece that starts with them getting the phone ellipse and just destroying that entire construction zone right there few moments that really stand out to me that clearly martin campbell. The director wants us to pay attention to and their moments like the one where we see the guy he's chasing who's very fleet of foot and is very athletic and is able to jump from one perch atop some construction zone onto some other landing and when he does it. It's perfect everything about. It's perfect in bonn does it. He stumbles and he. He's barely able to hang on and has to pull himself up when he jumps over a wall unlike the other guy who just kind of like a cheetah jumps over it he of course is a little bit more human. He's still james bond. He's still incredible physical specimen that's the other real defining characteristic of craig's bhatt obviously but when he jumps over he kinda comes down with a thud and then has to start running again right or he just brakes right through the wall. And that's the other one. That's that's the best example to support my case right where they're running through this building that's under construction and the guy he's chasing somehow manages to just kind fly through an opening and the next thing we see is bond chasing after him and he just goes right through it. He doesn't have time to mess around..

And so yeah this was interesting to get some of the background info a lot of it drawn from the two thousand or two thousand two documentary of the same name. The eyes of tammy faye haven't seen that one. But from what. I understand both at end this i can attest to very much rehabilitation projects. You know to to say that there was more and of course there was more to to this woman than what we saw on saturday night. Live or in news. Reports jessica chastain as tammy faye is going to make you believe that no matter what. She is the powerhouse force in this film. The reason why i liked it. I think overall as a movie. It's it's a little strange. It's both really obvious like hitting its themes and points very underlying them like she on like her makeup his underlying. You know but at the same time it's also kind of thinly developed. There are things we wish. It explored further or more deeply. So the material isn't great. Here but chastain is tammy faye does something. It's curious adam you you know. I've talked about this. How this is the sort of performance that i normally would bristle at where it's it's it's really big. It's an actor going through a physical transformation. It's geared for oscar attention right but but why it works here is because that all lines up from what i understand of the real life. Tammy faye bakker this. This is someone who had a peppy. Cheerful bright public presents the entire movie. Adopts that and chastain does to. This is almost like you're you're experiencing this movie. What it would have been like to live through the fame and the failure of this ministry through her is how she would have seen it and how she sees herself. So it's really a galvanizing performance. I couldn't help but admire at the end. I even started thinking that it it kind of reminded me of. We've been going through a various sort of loose joan crawford marathon at home. Maybe you know movie every month or so here with the family and it did remind me of the ways crawford could kind of just takeover a film that dared caster and a lot of times. These were films about women who were at their wit's ends or or facing societal expectations that they wanted to upend and so it was interesting to see chastain. Do something similar here just grabbing this movie by the throat giving it a fierceness that kind of aligned with what you understand tammy faye bakker might have had underneath all that niceness that she presented so so. I think it's definitely worth seeing for chest pains performance which i think is probably what intrigued both of us about the project to begin with. I hope to catch up with it soon. "Mention for a preview back in two thousand nineteen. We're finally getting to see it. And if you wanted to why i would physician this movie as potentially one of my favorite movies ever made. A filmmaking couple summer retreat to the idyllic island that inspired their hero bergman blurs the lines between reality and fantasy and their own relationship. I'm not sure this movie actually exists. I think someone just took it out of my brain and said oh what movie will adam give five stars to. Even if he doesn't see it and you have the plot synopsis for bergman island. That is a high expectation. it is right. Tim roth and vicky kreps. Both talented actors are the couple. Me of us kab ska also in it. Mea hanson loved. The director herself does appear in the movie. Though i'm not sure in what capacity and there's a part in the trailer where his character says something like you realize we're going to sleep in the bed where they shot scenes from a marriage and then you get the punch line. Which is i think we're gonna have to find another bet right and it almost makes even though. I don't think the movie is going for this at all. The trailers suddenly doesn't suggest it. It's almost like a horror movie setup or some kind of psychological thriller we know this house is supposedly haunted but will brave it. That's all nonsense. We're volatile married couple. Nolan gets nominations for the film and all the technical categories but it didn't invest director and it didn't get a best picture it deserve. Both it deserves to win. Best picture if you're telling me slumdog millionaire which won that year's a better movie than did dark. I will fight you right now. In the main streets of el segundo. Let me tell you something. Though slumdog millionaire was great not better than the dark night's sleep dog millionaires. An incredible millionaire is pretty incredible. I think that year. I was ben. Button guy. memory serves the record for thirteen. Nominations frost nixon mill. Says we meet in the middle on. God's heart what come on ben button that gets me but naveh chance. It did not have to not have a chance that night but but you know heath ledger. The performance a builds to a crescendo. patient performance. It's not lao you i am. I the guy who played the original joker. On the first batman adam west one cesar romero went to my high school intercollegiate collegiate. Really and who didn't go to your a power forward who could go twenty that performance. The joker so big so showy so loud on the tv show and either with jack would rejected with it in the tim burton version. It's such a loud performance. I always thought that mayor was an odd casting choice but no one does a good job in his films with littering in the cast of supporting actors with some some some jarring casting matthew modine in the third one. No time to die no time to die man. It's one of the things that you know. When the billie eilish song came out for the bond movie. I just was nonstop on that song. I admittedly. I've been nonstop on billie eilish. She was outstanding. Twenty twenty and i mean really in two thousand nine hundred. And i think that's when. Where do we go when we fall asleep came out the her album. That song captivated me. I've always loved daniel craig's bond. Pierce brosnan was my bond growing up as a child. But daniel craig has been great you. My wife and i differ on a couple of movies. But i'm really looking forward to see how he rounds out his appearance in the franchise. Because it's it's something that i don't wanna say it's him but i think he's earned the ability to go out on it outstanding movie and i hope bond time today is going to be that again. Something that i'm interested in now. Craig was at first a slow burn for me. As far as being that bond. I could truly appreciate and i'm now grown to really enjoy the character. I think sky fall did it for me as it did for a lot of other people at the most successful bond movie ever. Because it's such a great movie and he did so well in it that i now look forward to movies outside of the bond universe from him. Obviously he's done with knives out and lucky logan. That was a really great movie. Really great performance by him. Heat really catapulted the movie or rogan organ. Logan lucky yeah. Logan lucky the steven soderbergh film who steven spielberg always seems to go on retirement and then comes out of it makes it always. Yeah so logan. Lucky was a a truly great film in his performance and it was good. So i'm definitely looking forward to seeing what daniel craig gives one last effort to the bond films because this will be the last time we see them in a double. O seven moniker. Who will that be only speculation as there's a will have to wait and see on that one.
