Emmys 2020: Who won big at the first virtual ceremony
"Emmy's happened last night. The last couple days I want to say like through last week, there was some of the you know, technical Emmys and Creative arts Emmys and they've all been I've been seeing like the results of those, but these were the actual Actors and actresses and shows and You know the hole, but it was It was virtual, right? Yes. So every I think that they They actually put a show together to do the Emmys. Um But the other ones that I think we're just getting. I'm sure there was some kind of ceremony on zoom or something. But I don't know that those ones were televised. They might have been. No, I mean, look, I didn't I Maybe you mentioned it. Maybe I read. Maybe I didn't. It was a shock to me at whatever time nine o'clock last night when I started seeing the news roll through, and I was like Emmys. You talked about it a little remember? It was, you know, because Jimmy Kimmel was hosting and so there was some talk, but I play police. Li forgot about it and the whole thing so I didn't see one second of it. Oh, yeah, no. And, frankly, these days because of you, Khun DVR things I'd never sit and watch things in real time anyway, so Because who wants us in just to put the others on When I organize S O. The big winner last night is Schmidt's Creek. It's not the name of the show, but right The clothes. They were saying it on TV because I did see a clip after that. They were saying the word, but I don't want you don't want no trouble with you. Just don't I considered it. You know, it spells have pointed out that every time they say it, they had to put the actual words upon these people can read it with. Oh, right. You see, It's not what you think There's an extra tea and they've thrown at sea in there, okay? So I'm just gonna say Schmidt's creek because I'm with you. You know, whatever. I just guess Monday's gonna be hard enough, right? Yeah. What's our theme? We don't want to. We don't want no trouble. That's right. I keep forgetting the better. That's our theme. Well, since I should write that down here, put it up with all my little, you know, daily affirmations. So the Emmys was virtual And Schmidt's Creek swept in all this is it's actually quite amazing because it has never won an Emmy in any other season. Currently they're grand total of Emmy's up till this season when they took him all zero. It doesn't It seems to be a show that we used to have a million of them. And not that, you know. Ahh, that name in particular is obviously means that's a cable show, right? I mean, it's just It's not your Big four or whatever. But it's just a sitcom, and it's fun and it's and it's not that You could miss it, and you wouldn't care. But you could also sit down and watch four episodes on any given night and be like, Wow, that was light. It was easy is their thread that you follow along with? Yes, it's the family that has moved. Uh, I won't tell you the whole story. But yes, there's a story behind Why they're in this motel and Right off super rich. It's only that I find a just a life. Oh, poor things. Is that a Netflix show? It doesn't even say here. Oh, yeah, It's a Netflix. Yeah. So they won nine Emmys for their sixth and final season, including best comedy Siri's. It's a new record for most wins in a single season for a single comedy. Marvellous. Mrs. Mazel had had the record. They said it in 2018 with eight and then they got eight more in 2019. And I don't know if this means that Mrs Mazel was just completely shut out. Oh, end because all the comedy awards seemed to have gone to Schmidt's Creek. The cast swept the acting categories, and that's the first time a comedy Siri's has done that Eugene Levy and Catharine O'Hara won best actor and actress and Daniel Levy and Annie Murphy, one supporting actor and actress. And they're saying here that's never happened. So congratulations to them. Daniel Levy also set a record for most wins for an individual in a seat in a single season with four because he also got trophies for writing and directing and Best comedy Siri's because he's a producer. So he actually technically that four Just for himself personally. Zero m. He's heading into the night. They never had any kind of incredible. But I guess you know, with my cell dominating in the last couple of seasons would be hard for anyone to rack up any numbers. They also set a record last night at the Emmys for most wins by black actors, including Regina King and Yaya Abdul Mateen. Ah, The second for watchman. Ouzo Duba for Mrs America. And Zendaya for euphoria. She's also the youngest Emmy winner in this category. Outstanding lead actress for drama. Stop me. If you have pulled any audio for any of these things in particular, I pulled some furs and die a winning it Isa from Oakland, apparently which is why we wanted to make sure we've got her on. So here she is reacting. Yeah, it is her reacting and she says a couple of things, but just there's there's a party behind her. So I know that I just want to say thank you to the TV academy to all the other incredible women in this category. I I admire you all so much. This is, um Oh, this is pretty crazy. Didn't really crying, Okay? I know this feels like a really weird time to be celebrating. But I just want to see that there is hope in the young people out there. I know that our TV show doesn't always feel like a great example of that. But there is hope in the other people, and I just want to say to all my peers out there doing the work in the streets. I see you. I'm are you I Thank you. And yeah, thank you so, so much. Um, this is thank you. And, of course, is through zoom. So right. Well, everyone was zooming in S O. She's the youngest any award winner for outstanding lead Actress for drama. So congratulations, Twos and Dia. And I guess I assumed that that party was happening in Oakland flatter know about that, But I do know she's she's pretty accomplished for such a young lady heard she's stars in Great America, the greatest showman Ohio. I want to say the great American hero. I don't know what she's in the great American. Ah, SOS and Dia. Congratulations to her. Eddie Murphy and Maya Rudolph one for Saturday Night Live, I guess for guest appearances and Ron Cephas Jones for this is us Eso Black actors Big night of record for most wins by black actors at the Emmys last night. The ceremony itself was obviously very different. Jimmy Kimmel hosted in an empty arena. Tried to fool us with crowd reactions from past ceremonies. Was anyone some of that? Yeah, sure. I'll watch a little of that. Oh watchmen. Also what Jerry Falwell Jr was into Flashing people appreciating and there's a flash of him in the audience. Then how much hilarious here that would mean that no one is in the audience. That would mean that I'm a lump here all alone. You'll see them. They turn the lights up. Just of course I'm here all alone. Of course. We don't have an audience. This isn't a mag a rally. It's the Emmys. Instead of a live audience. We took a page from baseball tonight and we filled the seats with cardboard cutouts of the nominees. You can see we have. Regina King, Hugh Jackman, Jason Bateman. Wait a minute. Go back one. Jason Patient, He's really hilarious. Yes, they did move. Mind your business Camel Big night for May. I know it's a big night but you can't be in here. We have very strict safety protocols. I'm clean guy. OK, I'm a big big washer upper always have been smell my hands like a garden. No, thank you. I'm sure you're clean. That's not the point. We just have a limit on how many people we can have in the building. So you really need to go? No, I don't. I don't. Okay. I haven't left the house for six months. Don't send me back there. I want to be here. This isn't a ritzy You know, I mean, I wantto eat shrimp with the cast of the crown. All right, I'm gonna want Mario Lopez asked me about my pants. Let's go. We don't have any friends that you could stay as long as you promise to laugh at my jokes. I'm out. I'm gonna call the car Loved Jason Bateman. Job. Good job s O. He reveals he's alone Except for Jason Bateman. Jimmy Kimmel. Continue with the show and some presenters did join him live. Jennifer Aniston was there. Did you grab that? I did here. Let me just pull that up. On the video. I said. I said, thanks, Jimmy. Other all across the stage from each other, Never, Never mind. It? Yes, I'd love some wine. No, I I said, Never mind. Oh, why are you standing all so far away from me, Dr Fauci said 60 ft. So 60 ft. No, isn't he said 6 Ft. Thank you. You also have sexy feet. Okay? Here, and that's it. Hilarious by the way. She then got in her extremely fast car lives right around the corner from there, and ah, she she made another appearance from her house later. So right? Yeah, but we're here. Oh, okay heads and there's Courtney Cox, Courtney's there. Of course I'm here. We live together. You do know there's a lag. Yeah, We've been roommates since 1994. But I don't know is it is this live TV? Both of you very well done. It's super cute. But the awkward, you know, three seconds of science, retired ruins everything before it does. We're very well acquainted with the awkward three seconds of silence, ruining everything. That is the life we're living right now. Anyway. Jennifer Aniston and Courtney Cox and Lisa could row whether she just jetted home after 60 ft. Away appearance on the show the awards, though, as they handed these out So I'm not sure how exactly this happened. If only the people who were actually getting the awards had people in has Matt suits outside their homes. No, it seems that Ah, they had everybody on standby like you'd have somebody in front of your house and has been with the award, but you might not win. So that way, everybody still kind of Were they holding? Just like a box. So you didn't know if there was any in it or not. Or that there were things that they were popping out of boxes, too. And that no one boxes that seemed really mean That was a really when I think, John Oliver, go when I have that mean here and you just pulled it up for you, too. Barrett. It pops open and there is it Pops open and and some confetti sprays out. Although that is right on the desk of his HBO set. Although I assume that that desk is in his garage, no, right. Cause that's where he's doing it from. So anyway. Nominees were all it remote locations, many in their own homes. Ah, they were doing the awards were delivered to those locations by people in has Matt suits, and they say someone had to be on hand for every so there was a guy hanging out in Has Matt suit whether you won or not, Some people actually took a visit. Do you have the Remmy use of dew? So this guy did not win in his category. Vinny and Ah, and there's the guy who has He's he's holding the little trophy. He's got the ones walking away having Oh, my God by you didn't win. All that's so sad, right? Well in some categories, all the nominees were given a box and then the winners boxwood Spring open and a hand holding the statue would pop out some They? Obviously a lot of people had to know that they did or didn't when I had a time. Other highlights her H e r her belt it out. Nothing compares to you. During the Emmys in Memoriam segment. Here's a little Since you've been gone ever. I can see whoever dinner in a fancy restaurant. Nothing can take away these blues. Come So she's playing piano, too. Way link that up with the Facebook page that people can see that isolated. Thank you. Ah, David Letterman got kicked out of an uber before presenting an award. I'm sure that wasn't set up. Celebrities revealed what they've been doing during the pandemic. Stop me if you have any of this stuff, Bernie Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington tried to skip 2020 skip to 2021 by ring in the New Year's Belle and her here. I watch Dave Letterman thing doesn't translate actually, wasn't it was? I don't know. It's the The New Year's party just wasn't I don't know It was well, you know, New Year's party with only two people is just not Doesn't feel New Year's Eve. They're saying The emotional highlight of the night was Tyler Perry's speech while accepting the governor's award. Um and then let me see if there's anything else here that I want to make sure that you I just have you have any questions about any categories Have all the categories here, I should, say Dave Chappelle, one for sticks and stones, best pre recorded variety special. Um, yeah, I don't have any questions, but I do. Look without trying to sound like I'm patting ourselves on the back because I'm not trying to do that. I give credit to anybody who's trying to do a show right now. Absolutely. It's a pain in the butt, and you'll see why they could absolutely see why they went through with it. But I could also see if they said not this year, everyone where does it go ahead? Mail you your prize and Here's the announcement work and that and the example the best example of it is that three The five second lag between the friends and less like Jesus. What is that? That's that's live. That's national TV. That's international TV right now. Well, that's you know, that's the world. We're living in pin, right? Everything sucks. The best variety sketch. Siri's went to Saturday night live and actually have a little bit of news about that. The full cast from last year is coming back this year. Usually there are at least some changes, and there were rumors that Kay McKinnon was going to leave. And she's got a career outside of this, but season 46 is starting October 3rd. And it's coming back to Rockefeller Center studio for the first time since the shutdown. They are going toe put all kinds of safety protocols in place, but it looks like we're going to get actual I'm sure will be no audience. But it will be live apparently, and that will happen there at their normal studio. So they say. The last time there was no caste turnover between seasons was 07 when the 33rd season began with the ensemble intact, So everybody who you liked last year and everybody who didn't like last year We'll be back. That season 46 in playing Joe Biden. On Saturday night Live will be Jim Carrey. Oh, wow, really adding a big name to play one of the candidates. Ah, it looks like You know, they're saying it's gonna happen Ah for the for the debut, but they're basically safe in the 46 season, which debuts October 3rd. I I I'm guessing that he's sort of signed on to participate this whole season. There's going to be a lot of Biden this season. So maybe they said we, you know, and we'll pay you and we'll put you up and you could be alone. Fancy shmancy penthouse in New York City. So they are adding three new featured players to their cast. They'll have a limited studio audience for the coming season, but it's going to it's going to happen. And Jim Carey is I'm looking at a side by side of the two of them with a little make up, I think Kind of like, I think his teeth are going to work. I think it's going to work October. 3rd is when the new season starts, and we'll get to see how Jim Carey does plan Joe Biden's I Love So It doesn't matter to me before you a break, sir. Do you want to hear Because the texture of accident about hers performance saying that you check out her guitar riff in the end? I really like her. Yeah, That'll be a pithy ceremony. Facebook page. She played guitar when she came in and saying for us, right? She did. Yes, she was. That was that was lovely. Only her Her is her
Here are the 2020 Emmy Awards highlights
"So much nowadays traditional Glam, gathering of the EMMYS was shrunk down to a virtual version. This year, the winners had to dial in from their sofas but did to scale down show remove any of the fun while I'm joined by the phone critic Karen Cranach from welcome back Karen. Now, Jimmy Kimmel called this the pandemic. What was it like? You. Don't I was reading about the run up because of course, they had five days of the creative emmys, which was very interesting which covered documentarian sports things like that. We don't really get to see those its role waiting for the television ones television on comedy and they're all saying, oh, it's can be terrible to glitches and there were absolutely no. Glitches at all the writing was sensitive national it probably would have worked alive, and in fact, what they were doing is they were cutting back into the audience of previous years. So at first we thought Kimmel was presented to reluctance of couldn't be, and then of course, we see that it's an empty staple center with cardboard cutouts except one person Jason Bateman. It worked really really well, and as you said, he called the Pan Denny's. You can't have virus without a host modest M.. It. Last year it was host free. So he's making a double point there isn't he? Will he is I mean there is a discussion for all the wards shows that you know do we really need a host to carry through to give a a link King presents between all of the awards and sometimes you need that sometimes you don't, but he's very, very good in this effect was. Nominated himself didn't win but for for this year. So he solid reacted really well, and particularly with Jennifer Aniston was was there in I'm assuming was a prerecorded, extra it live. Where he's burning one of the emmy envelopes to sanitize it, and if the fire gets out of control, she actually does put put. The. Fire. Out on stage. Tell US little bit more than about. Who won who lost how things went? Arguably, this was possibly our final reminder. Some was that it was a blissful reminder of our recent past, but people could still make television in the same room. I think we're we're all I. Think we're we're going to get nostalgic about these virtual awards shows really because they could do so much more with with a with a regular live show somebody sends in a prerecorded or televisual link you feel cheated. Now you feel that you've got more possibility because the people can actually record something or talk to you live. So it Kinda works really well, for example, before I go to the awards there was almost apprentice reunion lease a Jennifer Aniston Courtney Cox and Lisa kudrow showed up altogether and Jimmy Kimmel's going what are you doing together and he goes she goes well, we've Jennifer says. We've been living together since nineteen ninety four. It was just a lovely surprised wouldn't have been able to happen in real life. So it was great now. watchmen with the big re reimagined science fiction. Series was for twenty six nominations at one eleven including UN series. Star. Regina. King and also best limited series which is amazing and that helped push the HBO show to Thirty Wins in total, which is very important and also Shits Creek, of course, we have to put little tm on there because it's spelled S. C. H. W. T. s. did a sweep a to record for comedy shows of nine wins and it was yeah it's it's incredible. It's last is the final. Season for that show and it was wonderful to see all of our beloved. Canadian actors. That was a hugely hugely popular series it turned up on flicks. But it didn't start with nets, which is weird. Yes it has found that second life. Elsa Bell Rutland. Well, it was really pop TV and it just it got a cult following because. I mean, these I've been watching Catherine O'Hara Levy since the seventies I mean they were at second city which the rivals Saturday night live we've seen them in American pie everywhere. These are very, very good season actors and writers and the fact that they show up with this unique show on pop TV it just goes to show you that if something's good against audience people will see

"Come to nightly pop and number one show right after the Kardashians go off the Air Nina Hunter we devastated how are we doing with this news end of an era? End of Era's GonNa be interesting to see how things unfold when nobody can make fun of Kim losing diving earrings right? Good Point Hunter you doing okay. This is probably really tough for you. It's pretty rough. It's been a rough couple of days for me personally, but I'm making it through I understand don't worry about it. We're here for if you need any counseling on it. We have to kick things off with the end of an era. As you said, yesterday news broke that keeping up with the Kardashians is coming to an end early next year after twenty seasons. So let's take a look back at all the heart warming moments. came up in the Ocean Thun. Center. I will literally you up. My daughter's sleeping ever come at me like canceling. Punch your face don't. Really Stop. Court and not be. So you know with the stick up her ass, the least exciting to look I don't want to. Be Accommodating to the people that actually do don't. Hurt you don't do that only God. Thanks firmly though with your badly that no one could afford. Would you stop taking pictures of yourself your sisters going to jail? Do we think they're saying off the air. What do we think is happening? Okay. So here's my theory I. Think keeping up with the Kardashians is definitely going away but I don't think the Kardashians are leaving reality TV. I think you know rob has been kind of in and out of the out of the season's over the last few years Courtney has expressed that she doesn't really want to do. It anymore, we know Kylie is doing her thing I think it's going to be a more condensed version with the new name but I don't think the Kardashians are leaving reality TV I mean honestly like one of the most iconic moments for me and watching the Kardashians when chloe was going to jail and Chris was like, Kim can you stop taking photographs of yourself like your sister's going to jail? That was a good one I. Think that they are you know listen if they've given us a lot of content you know over the years I can't let you know with the whole fight where Kim said Courtney was at least interesting to look at like though that was pretty jarring. Tennessee. So they've given us a lot to talk about Babb, de que they just kind of changed the way reality TV was done in a big way and I don't think it'll be the same moving. Forward, I am I heard twenty, twenty, one season finale is GonNa be incredible that it's going to be your the season finale is GonNa be incredible? It's GONNA be amazing. Nonetheless, I have to say when I heard this news yesterday I was like you know what it seems like it's the right time and then as the day went on, I was very affected by it. I was like what am I without the I was I was like it's one. Live, it was always there if I needed it also coming to an end. Kong as nonstop texting. He posted this x ray on twitter from the hospital saying he had to get a cortisone shot and mixed in with a little light. Because of too much texting brow thoughts, guys what we think too much texting. Are You texting too much? I feel like we all might have to get these shots. I. Actually have. Little indents on my fingers from from using. You guys have that yet but like my pinkie finger has like a ended because of the way I hold my phone. That's kind of like a permanent thing now I think so I do feel like with these phones we we all using them. So often that it is doing things with our hands I, I have gone the hand cramps as well. I don't have the INDENTS, but I've gone the hand cramps and I know you guys hate here but just turn off your phone for twelve hours a day. It will make your life Meka just give it a go. Dog I got a job to do that. Job. I'm sorry. Yesterday hundreds like needed I. Really all we had to schedule something. We're so slammed hunters like, Oh, I can only do it this unlike hunter what are we got going on? Daily. For two years has never done daily pop one meanwhile the rest of us. Again say. Never, once the representation you have, it's unreal I I had some good ones but Jesus they worked
The Power of La La Anthony
"PLA Anthony Welcome to the show so. How are you guys doing? Don't? Talk to you. So, people. Know, you got your start in radio at the age of just sixteen t talked to us about your journey I like to go to eleventh grade and I was just so until with this radio station and then went to an event they were having enormous like saw some interns like hanging posters with something that the Wu Tang clan was doing and I was like this could be really cool. So I applied for the program NASA I got him but I didn't really have a plan I just knew I. Love Music and my love for music has taken me where to where I'm at now I got somebody who has dj big. Fan You want not held it down. But it's been incredible to see your acting career just flourish and you play the character of dom on most recent season of the shy conduit for the money I, do it for the culture talk to us about what it was like to play. And get into that character shirish doubt I love lean away. She's amazing for our culture and she was like I might have something for you on which to come in addition and I was like I can't mess this up like I wanna be on the shy and I got the role of dom which I love because she's so different from leaky show empowered dom as a chef that's an entrepreneur and trying to get their business off of. The ground and really focused into keeping 'em it on point so they can build this amazing business together. So I think it was a great transition into go from working with great creators like Courtney Kemp and fifty to now be on the Lena and her crew has been just an incredible transition and so there and you've been acting in so many different types of roles for over ten years I'm curious like what type of role do you hope comes next I'm always looking for relieve rooted and grounded stories just stories that matter to us. Our culture stories that we can relate to stories that people aren't telling I'm attracted to that kind of material, which is why I'm also producing house well, because the great thing about producing, find your own material and bring it to life you're working on a new project that gives a behind the scenes. Look at the NFL. Tell us a bit about this new series and why you wanted to be involved. So fifty were executive producing together the book that we read that we love and it's more about like what goes on behind The scenes with sports, but it's mostly about the women. So many women just give up their own lives just to be there for their partner, who's an athlete losing sports, and what happens when you like I have my own life and I want to do my own thing and what effect does that have, but it gets really grimy and gritty in real and obviously you know sports and athletics or something you know I know a lot about so I was able to really give some of my stories and really gives some real. Really exciting content to the show. So we're excited we're excited to hopefully be in production really soon and get that oven going you're also working on. Producing Story About Sin Toya Brown long you know young woman who killed a man in self defense sixteen was tried as an adult given a life sentence was then finally offered clemency last year. Why was it so important to you to make sure that this story was told that just such a powerful story and I had been tracking it for a while and watching toys interviews and just what happened to her from young growth? Donau. Moe's fascinated at like what? Was Your Life like that. took you down these paths and then her completely changing her life and finding God and becoming the spokesperson for young girls and sex trafficking. I thought it was amazing. So that's something we're so excited about and wanted to be so careful with because now we're telling someone's life story. You don't WanNa, take it lightly or take that for granted art. So power was truly one of my favorite shows I've talked to breathe way too much. I still found myself wondering what carers from the show would do if they existed in the real world. So We'd love it if you could just indulge us in a little bit of a game. Okay. We're GONNA throw out a scenario and you tell us which character from power best fits the situation. All right. Okay. So we all know that Joe Biden made good on his promise to choose a woman to be his running mate. On the democratic. Ticket but we want to know which female character on power would have made a better choice as a running mate. Okay. So You already know off the top of the dump quick witted she's smart. She knows the system how to get through the system I. think he'd be a great running Angelo for sure I mean she kinda got caught up by the system that numerous through it and she knows the law whether she was part of breaking the law or not. She knows the law. So I think she would have been great. All, right. Second Question. So none of the men on power were necessarily winning awards in the a good boyfriend healthy relationships department lynch two men from power. Do you think could go head to head in a horrible boyfriends verses? Who would you like to see? I think draze caring. There was a horrible boyfriend who said the daughter the always mentioned that he didn't care what happened. Durham mom probably ghost I don't love how he handled the situation between you know Tasha Angela and how he did that I wouldn't say Tommy 'cause. You did kill Holly. You're right. Maybe that's what I was gonNA. Relationship you've really love Kisha and things that he would have never heard. Anything to protector. So he might not have been the ideal boyfriend, but I think he was getting to a place where he was really trying to eat. Better. But he did last gopher. No

I can say from personal experience that sometimes things have to get really broken before you notice when you are overwhelmed with stress and crazy of the day to day the most important thing seemed to slip through your fingers. Fixing was necessary and even urgent seem impossible when you are busy trying to hold everything else together. Three dia reasons to simplify your life. Number one, you are broke. When as Dave Ramsey, Leisa say there is more month at the end of the money and you're struggling to make ends meet. It feels impossible to get to the other side after struggling with debts and living beyond my means for four years. I finally decided to crawl out the credit got shopped store accounts closed and our family cut most unnecessary expenses until it was all paid off, we pay the student loans, car loans, credit card debt, and finally a first a second mortgage when we sold our home last year. I thought it would be a tremendous sacrifice to pull back and put any extra money towards debt pros. Actually a great relief. He gave me time to see that I could be just as happy happier even without buying a new pair of shoes or trying to lift my spirits at the mall. How Star Simplifying Your Finances Get honest. Simplicity doesn't promise a perfect life, but it does help you define what happiness means in your life how much you really need to achieve that happiness and what you need to eliminate to maintain it.
Appeals court keeps Flynn case alive
"Legal saga of Michael Flynn is not over yet. The full DC Federal Court of Appeals has ruled that the Justice Department and the former Trump National Security Advisor cannot force the trial judge to dismiss the criminal case against Flynn without a hearing. The 82 decision was the result of a rare on bank hearing after a three judge panel ruled in favor of Flynn in June. The case has taken unusual twists and turns with the latest separation of powers fight between a veteran federal judge and the Trump Administration. Perhaps the most unusual Joining me is former federal prosecutor Robert Mintz, a partner McCarter in English. But what was the reason the full court gave for reversing the decision of the three judge panel? Well, the opinion by the full court of people really was a procedural decision. It really turned on the question of whether or not the Court of Appeals should be granting this rarely granted writ of mandate in a kind of riddle, man. Dana is something that is Only infrequently used. It was really not a surprise that the full Court of Appeals ruled the way it did. Because in this case, judge Children have not actually done anything that he had not even had a hearing that he'd not ruled against. The Department of Justice is motion to dismiss. And so in this case, it was difficult. We're really impossible for Flint lawyers to argue that they were some manifest. Injustice. If this writ of mandamus was not granted, and that they had no adequate alternative beings in order to satisfy their claim or gain the release they were seeking here, the relief could simply come on appeal. It goes back to jail salivating dogs. Sullivan could make a decision on what the Court of appeal says. If you don't like the decisions I made, you could be right back before the court of Appeals again and we will reconsider the case at that point. The D. C court confirmed what many legal experts have been saying that this was an unprecedented move by Flynn saying that Flynn has not sighted any case in which our court or any court issued the writ to compel a district court to decide an undecided motion in a particular way. Does that put into context how odd this motion was at this time? Yes, This whole case has been extremely unusual for a whole variety of reasons than what it really turned on this question of who has the right to determine whether the case should be dismissed. Thankfully, the executive branch clearly has the authority to commence or to continue prosecution that something that is up to the Department of Justice. That rule 48 a required believe of court before a case is a mess, And I think that's what this entire controversies about. What does leave of Courtney did give the trial judge the authority to probe the Department of Justice for the reasons that they are dismissing a case or does the trial just stuff we have to accept the dismissal at face value? And dismiss the case. Regardless of any concerns that the trial judge may have about the motivation behind the Department of Justice is decision. What were the dissents by two Republican appointees based on Essentially that it is the Department of Justice is Lone authority to decide whether to prosecute a case. But what this hearing is really about the question of whether or not the trial judge gets to probe into the reasoning behind the Department of Justice is decision to drop this case what the dissenting judges are arguing that the trial judge does not have the authority. To probe into the internal decision making by the Department of Justice that that's an executive Department decision and that what the court here is doing is usurping the authority of the executive department to decide whether or not to prosecute criminal cases. This is obviously a victory for Judge Emmet Sullivan. But how much of a victory and what I mean by that is Did the D C circuit court define what kind of hearing he can hold. Can he actually dig into the administration's motives for dismissing the case against Flynn? The Court of Appeals sent a very clear signal to the trial judge that they do not expect the hearing to turn into any kind of a circus. And in fact, the lawyer who is representing Judge Sullivan before the full Court of appeals, actually represented during the argument that there will be no discovery from the Department of Justice during any kind of sharing will be no evidentiary hearing, And in fact, she argued that the judge may well decide to dismiss this case after the party simply found grief. Is this one of the longest guilty please you've ever seen. Michael Flynn pleaded guilty in December off 2017. This case does have a rather convoluted history. It began with a guilty plea in 2017, where he had been lying to FBI agent about his conversations with Russia's faster to the United States. In the weeks leading up to President Trump's inauguration. Then he hired a new lawyer, and in 2019, he began to retreat from his prior position, trying to undo his guilty plea. Initially, a Department of Justice opposed efforts to withdraw the guilty plea and then in an about face took the position that the case should be dismissed. That's what bled us to where we are today, but this has been a protracted battle where we've seen the defendant admit twice in court. For lying to federal agents amended now attracting his plea and wants the case to be dismissed. Interestingly, the Department of Justice is logic for dismissing the case is not the General Clinton did not lie to federal agents, but is that it wasn't
Beware of Sex Trafficking Rings - They Are Everywhere
"I want to say something about you talking about things going on the world just how crazy this is. For those who don't know, Roelant is like a child she's like one of our other kids and. Roelant posted on her social media story today. And I just after read it because it to me is like holy cow. This was what she said. And, this was sent from a friend of hers. My sorority sister a GAL named courtney who lives in Nashville has a friend who took a mint from her uber driver the other night it was wrapped up just like a white lifesaver. She started to feel weird. So she text her mom she woke up in a warehouse close to the Nashville. Airport in a sex trafficking ring. Her iphone location was shared with her mother. So the police were able to track her. The Girls Okay and And she's the one who told Courtney what happened so this isn't some friend of a friend of a friend bs this horrific and scary stuff happen. Don't take minutes even if they're wrapped in cellophane as they had as if they hadn't been touched and just don't take anything and. Don't be in an uber by yourself. You know. Thank God this girl is okay physically I'm sure emotionally. Amin. Going, to take a long time for her to heal from this, but how scary is that? It's crazy. It's crazy. I mean in Nashville because people think Oh, you're in Nashville you know it's very say fits. Your small town still. That to me. Is So. Scary. But the good thing was was that the police rebelled attract her because she shared locations with her mother, which is something that our kids have fought back on nosy. You just want to know where I M, etc.. I hope for you parents that are listening that you share this story with with your kids. To know that it's not about being nosy it's about keeping them safe and if your kid out here, if you're a teenager if you're a young adult share your location with someone. So that somebody knows where you are and can get to because folks. Delicious. Be honest this probably saved this girl's life. Because her mother was able to get the police the information to track her phone. It's it's just crazy and and you know I do have you know the locations of our children? And of you and you know my mother and we do all know where each other we're. We're all located. So you know I mean it helps me to sleep at night knowing that I can track and you know if Savannah is out traveling if she even though even those are stuff is booked privately and you know with a car service literally when she they pull up, she takes a picture of the tag on the car. and. She sends me the picture of that and then she puts her location to where I can track it as she's literally going down the highway. So we do stay on top of it as much as we can. But for those of you who are not who don't maybe have a parent or someone that you're sharing your location with take your own safety into your hands. Do not be foolish. Do not be stupid. It's just right. You got one life. Yeah, and it's you know I think we get. We get very comfortable. You know because we're like our we're not in Atlanta or Miami or la where you know these things happen in other places this is right here. I mean you're talking about twenty minutes from where I lay ahead at. A sex trafficking ring twenty minutes from where match children live that to me is scary and the only way that we're going to stop this is we have to continue talking about it. We have to be vigilant and take care of. Each other
Knowing What Leads to Victory
"This is Jaakko podcast number to forty five with Echo Charles in me Jaakko willink good evening Echo vide-. Also joining tonight is Dave Burke leaving dave good evening. Did you make it to the status of Honorary Co host. Yes No. As thinking, we're getting their people want to know why they call him a good deal Dave. This. The fact that we've been talking about this is why check back again tonight with more combat lessons from the. From the document called combat lessons. Document written in the throes of World War Two and what they were doing interviewing. Frontline leaders and front line troops. Fact. The subtitle is rank and file in combat what they're doing and how they're doing. We've covered to these so far, and this is the third one. And you know sometimes I, think you know, I mean, we kinda get the idea right and I'll start thumbing s I started thumbing through. This one is you know do we really need to cover another one of these? So I started coming through it and you start reading these things. And I can't put it down and I'm still learning and so. I figure if I'm learning, we can all learn. Why why try to hold back from the people? No reason. We can get right into it. So here, this combat lessons. Volume Three. and. We've done to these so far actually I forget what number podcast they are, but we've covered to these volumes is the third volume. And this is what all the volume start off with this. The paramount combat lesson learned from every operation is the vital importance of leadership. which is really an interesting thing that we say. Every single time we talk to people are equipment or supply, and above are all men and above all our men are splendid. Aggressive and determined leadership is the priceless factor which inspires a command and upon which all success in battle depends. It is responsible for success or failure. And that is. July third, nineteen, forty, four. Starts. Off just jumping right into leadership command need for leadership comments received from all active theatres continue to emphasize the need for competent and aggressive leaders. This is especially true as regards junior officers and noncommissioned officers. Who tended General Courtney Hodges who observed operations in? North Africa and Italy stated. Before, I even get to that. Why is it? So why is it just so awesome? That they're just pointing out over and over and over again in each one of these volumes that leadership is the most important thing on the battlefield. And yet. We. Work with companies. That have no leadership training for their people. Until Axel Homefront shows up and then I guess they do. But it's bizarre. that. It's bizarre that it is so hard. What makes it? What what day? What makes it so hard to see? That leadership is the most important thing. What do you think makes it so hard to say I. Stumped. Good. Yeah. There's a couple of things I. I don't think people. Realize how impactful leadership is almost convinced themselves that hey, are what we can do is. We bring people with these skills or are our software, Sweden. They get. So wrapped up in all these other components they lose sight of the fact that this thing intangible thing that you can't really track with the with the spreadsheet they lose sight of how important it is and I think the other part that we've seen a lot now is. People lose sight of how often you have to keep addressing leadership, and so they think it's sometimes eight. No I understand what a good leadership and they think they are applying it but they don't realize that. Hey, I've gotta keep addressing this over and over and over again and they lose sight of not just how important. But also how important is how hard it is to sustain it and we come work with companies. The more we work with them and the long work of them. The more they want to keep doing and they realize man had I had no idea how long this journey was going to be. But the ones that figured out. To. They. They. They elevate quickly they so good so fast when they make it a priority. The first thing that you said. You are defacto not detached when you're inside of a company your firefighting day to day, you're trying to figure out what the next quarter is going to be. You're trying to figure out what's going on with the sales team. So you're in it and so you you start to lose track of the fact that this is this is. All about leadership. Yeah. So that happens and that's why when we come in with a company. We can immediately see because we are detached.

Lebanon's government steps down in wake of Beirut blast
"This week, Lebanon's government resigned amid mounting anger over the explosion that devastated parts of Beirut and left more than 200 people dead. The announcement was made on television on Monday evening, Courtney Is this an act of self sacrifice herself preservation. S o. I mean, the announcement was not what you would expect if a prime minister actually came out and berated Lebanon's ruling a political leader for fostering and promoting corruption. And said, You know, we tried to do our best but way we can't. We can't fight it. Um, and it's it's interesting because he's only been in that position. For what about eight months now he's only been in there this year. So I the the problem is You know, the president has asked the government to stay in a caretaker capacity while new government is formed. So the we're still going to see these same people running the government for most likely for awhile, because the way that they form a government there is if it's anything like what they went through last year in 2019 It's going to take months while they while they the Parliament determines who is going to be a new prime minister. But the issue is even with a new government thes. These underlying problems of corruption are going to still Be there. The issues that the people in Lebanon have with their government didn't start with this horrific explosion. Last explosions last week they began last year last October. Lebanon's currency began just losing value dramatically losing value and protests began Then since then, their currencies lost about 70% of its value. Poverty is soaring. The World Bank is projecting that more than half of the country's population will be considered poor by the end of this year. And and the explosions at the port. This is devastating explosion. Only exacerbated that, as did Corona virus. So the people there are desperate for good leadership, and the reality is the way that the government is set up. There's going to be a parliaments goingto have to appoint a new prime minister. But there's going to be delays. There's going to be gridlock and doing that. And the new government is not going to be going to see some end the systemic corruption that the people are are desperate to see end and to see some real leadership in their country. In what world is the international community have to play here? No. There were concerns about eight coming in tow Lebanon and that aid being misused. But according to the Economist, 11 these currency has lost 80% of its value since October. Inflation is at 90%. As Courtney said, people are deeply in trouble. So what's the path ahead? Absolutely, You know, the international community has a huge role to play potentially, you know, we saw in the kind of immediate aftermath when these protests could have began. You know, against the corruption and mismanagement and just incompetence. Really. Of the Lebanese government. We saw even you know thousands of of Lebanese signing a petition literally asking France to basically reimpose the mandate and take over control of the country for the next 10 years. Right, Remember, you know, France used to have the mandate over Lebanon and run things. The idea that people would essentially beg for a return to colonial era rule is just is such a stark Kind of clarifying moment to realize just how bad things have gotten Lebanon and you know the international community we saw we saw the French president Emmanuel Macron. Come, Teo, the streets of Beirut and walk around and people were literally saying, Please help us. Please help us so France, in particular, has a huge role to play here in terms of how they help aid how they help work with the government to form potentially new structures, But but we'll see what happens. A lot of this depends on what the government and the political players, including Hezbollah do inside Lebanon.
Belarus' Post-Election Crackdown
"Nearly 7000 people have been detained in Belarus after protests erupted on Wednesday. This follows the presidential election results that came over the weekend. Several demonstrators who were arrested have sense accused the government of torture. Jen, What's going on? Why are people upset? Well, so this basically kind of started going back a little bit before this election, so they had an election on Sunday. But a little bit. Before that there were some protests going on and Is a lot of had to do with Alexander Lukashenko and his he's the president and his kind of failure more long term in terms of the economy in terms of managing the Corona virus. But then there was this election coming up. And because Lukashenko he's been in power for 26 years now. He was basically elected in the first, you know, nationwide Democratic elections in the country. After you know, they declared independence from the Soviet Union. It was the first nationwide really free and fair election. It was also the last nationwide free and fair election. Hey, has since then consistently crackdown on all forms of opposition. He's rigged all the elections to make sure he stays in power. And this coming up election that was coming up this past Sunday. He was planning to do the same thing. He detained the opposition. You know, the key opposition leaders. But he didn't factor in that there was basically a homemaker, a woman named Svetlana ticking off scale. She's a 37 year old former English translators stay at home Mom. She's also the wife of one of the lead opposition figures who was detained and she said, Okay, fine. You want to arrest my husband? Then I'll run for president in his stead. And she took to the streets and basically said, You know, I'm not gonna let this happen. She basically helped unite the opposition and thousands and thousands and thousands of people came out to the streets in support of her. In a way that had not been seen basically in its entire post Soviet history on DH. Then, of course, the election was rigged. As expected, she, you know, contested the results. She ended up having to fleet of Lithuania she was feared for her Children's lives. But people are angry and they're back in the streets in the thousands and tens of thousands and true to form, Lukashenko's government is again cracking down brutally and trying to repress it. Well, Courtney, we got this message from Dave, who says the situation is so fluid. How will the US respond to Lukashenko's efforts to be seen to be looking for a political solution where he still stays in power? Well, General. I mean, the U. S. Has already said that they don't believe these were free elections. We heard that from Mike Pompeo just this week, and the EU has said that I mean, pretty much the entire international community has condemned these elections. It's interesting because this comes at a time when you there have been terrible relations between the US and Minsk for years. In fact, In. Lukashenko has been under sanctions by the U. S. Since 2006 after another round of election irregularities, so knows general saying free and fair elections that have been a thing of the past. In It has been a thing of the past there. But earlier this year in February, Mike Pompeo became the highest ranking administration official to visit there. In years. He went to Minsk. He met with Lukashenko in April. The administration nominated ambassador for the country, Julie Fisher, would be that she would have been the first ambassador there in more than a decade and actually just went up for her confirmation about a week ago. But now it looks as if there are some people on the hill who are saying while we need to hold up this nomination, If we send a diplomat there, it would appear that this is an endorsement of the crackdown. There are others who think well, if ever there's a time that we need someone there Help advocate for democracy. It's now but it looks as if that nomination is held up. So what's interesting is this All comes at a time where there really was this effort, toe warm ties between Washington and Minsk, and now it looks as if once again, Lukashenko going back to his ways of Trying to rigging an election of really maintaining his title as one of Europe's last remaining dictators that may end up destroying any chance for some kind of riel. Diplomatic relations between the two countries. Well, David on Thursday, thousands of women wearing white flooded the streets to protest that violent crackdown on demonstrators that happened during the week of protests. What comes next in Belarus. Well, it's going to be obviously down to developments inside batteries but also kind of slightly grubby great power politics because how his Alexander Lukashenko survives the dictator of this country. Just on the 10 million people for 26 years. It's part because he has been incredibly adept at playing the West and Russia off against each other. So he's taking a lot of money. Over the years from Russia, he has had Vladimir Putin as a patron of last resort, but he is also Occasionally flirted with Europe in first with us because he doesn't want to be taken over wholesale by Russia. China is also a player. President Xi Jinping of China was the first major leader to congratulate Alexander Lukashenko on this kind of grotesquely rigged election as though it was a perfectly good election. China is poured money into Belarus. It's one of its hubs Fishy Jinping's Bolton Road project, so This kind of constant playing back and forth. But the problem is that he is running a road because if he gives the European Union what they want, which is for him to liberalize on back down from crushing these process. You'll probably get swept

"Enjoyed episode gray story very relatable unless you to it. Though. The question that everyone that comes on as when you're younger than athlete would like bigger to the goals you underachieve. Oh God as an athlete I actually wanted to be my first athletic dream wants to be a professional basketball player. So I guess that's where it started is that was the first sport that I really played. And it that quickly died. After a while was like, you know what now got Bergdahl kind of fascinated found volleyball luckily. Yeah. I had a poster of Lisa Leslie on the back of my bedroom door. Measure myself against our. Be, like that one day. Lead the. Though at least leisurely. So when you kind of said, we're doing basketball. Then how do you kind of land up on wall kind of thing that was? A good place for you. Volleyball, why is the last sport that I tried like the last one I picked up and I've been I was always playing. As a kid I was just always I, think of a lot of athletes say that like I just play it every and volleyball was lost when I picked up his all my friends are playing it and I went to a camp at our high school, Our Future High School put on with them and I. I. Hated it. Just because was bad and I hate big batted things it just makes me so angry. And I just kind of stuck with it because all of my best friends were playing and it was really fun to play with them. So it was like I'm sure I'll like it. You know when I start getting better and I like hanging out then so stick with it and just did a job middle school along with everything else that I could play and I, just live London it gets so much fun. And when you start to get a little bit good, it was just I think we've no others or I didn't feel anger sport but I played before when I started to get good I just wanted to keep getting better on I. Definitely felt that was all. Yeah and then just think what I was in high school. Coaches. OCD recruiting letters, and found out. That was the thing I could do you know playing college now? It's like, okay I guess I'll do that. And Going with that same process. Started, getting good. How did you? Become good with was whether jet practice or you redoing the outside of just the usual everyday stuff. A little bit of both I mean I think it really helps like I always tell players that I'm coaching. I was not good until I was like it senior sixteen like even I started playing when I was twelve terrible until I was almost in high school. I think a lot of it when I turned I was a freshman in high school. So it's like fourteen fifteen years old in a big game changer was that summer I played a lot of volleyball because then middle school I played every sport. So I didn't really dedicate that much time I played club but. You know I'm not very, very good club not for a very good team. The practice wasn't very intense, and then that summer before freshman year when I decided I wanted to play in high school. I switched clubs went to NATO's Houston. Was a better had had give reputation at the time played was in the gym at all the open gyms, all the clinics they had. At least twice a week ever all summer long and I grew like four inches in like almost like less than six months I grew so much and. I. Think the biggest improvement was. By jump, I could actually jump after all of that playing at all jumping off the heading and I could finally. Serve consistently and served. Well, I was stronger I was in middle school I would I hated surfing. I just got so mad because I was so inconsistent I would actually. Do. Push ups in my room every night when I was like thirteen and fourteen seventh and eighth grade I served improve. But then I was in the gym so much that summer after middle school and it made such a big difference. I think here in your journey, just how you were determined to get better you like I'm not gonNA. Anyone be. Yeah and just be like I'm not going to be bad at this. This is ridiculous like I'm not I'm not going to be done at this. This is stupid. Like

"Yes. She goes on there and Barbara Walters is corny. I'm going to ask you all the questions that that I know people are going to ask in this. She's a grieving widow. This is Barbara Walters. Excuse for saying whatever has popped into her. Coordinator did you have your period on somebody who tried to grow up you? Yes, or no cottigny able to shoot men somewhat out of your diet. She asks her. What are what are the worst perceptions people have of your or the most mistaken perceptions? People have a few. She says that I'm not smart and that I'm not clean. And Barbara goes clean off drugs or physically clean. And Courtney goes both. Then Barbara's to talk about Courtney struggles with drugs and she says. Are you on drugs right now? And Courtney Says No, and she says are you on heroin? What kind of drug or not on for a second you see courtney kind of break character, and like go like no. Then, over gotta get so much better, then she goes. Are you on pros? PROZAC. Level as Yeah? Kraisak heroin, the too hot drugs. Yeah and then Courtney's like no, the PROZAC didn't work. I mean it's just it's embarrassing. It's embarrassing for both. For the viewer to also that little comment, no, the PROZAC. Is. Kind of inciteful, and she's kind of trolling Barbara Walters, and like daring Barbara Walters go in deeper and ask a real question. Yeah, this is what I mean by like. She's so smart and it's clear that she understands in layers. What exactly is happening? But it expresses itself in like these little phrases, and you're like according. Let's unpack that like just I want to know more. Yeah and I think that she has had enough bad experiences with journalists that she yet doesn't trust them. Yeah, there's. There's an interview she does with Howard Stern Ninety eight..

"And so it just kind of like this big public does of suicide prevention, and a huge part of that was that Courtney decided that she wanted to read his suicide note to people and and I. Don't think she did it. With like suicide prevention in her mind, but it turned out to be what people in the suicide allergy community consider to be like a really effective method, and it's it's something that no one had really done before in such a public way for for a celebrity, and she recorded in advancement, was played for the people at the vigil, and it's really sad to hear her read at, and it's just kind of interspersed with her. Talking about how messed up. It is and how it's better to burn out than fade away. Away and don't think you should do this. And and you know it's just raw. It's just it just feels very much like her reading this in her in her grief and her in this moment. She's like putting this out there for people because she knows how much his fans care about his music, and that are going to be completely lost, not knowing what to do, and then she shows up later in the day she showed up at the vigil and is like talking fans and giving away his stuff and like. Just telling people like I. Don't know what this means, but something good can come of it, and she so disheveled, and she's like clearly hasn't slept in days, and she's like kind of in a slip, and like her hair's like. Messed up pigtails, and like she just looks like a total mess, which makes complete sense. Yeah, but when you think of that image of a widow next to like what people had in their mind of public widow, which is like the Jackie O.. The complete one eighty that Britain so. I think it's easy to look at those images now thirty almost thirty years later and Envy Lake Yeah that's Courtney. Love or yeah, that was the nineties or whatever, but at the time it was, it was of revolutionary..

People I remember people repeating that story to me like into my twenties. It's Yeah I. Don't buy it Kansas We now go to candidates. Have you heard this one before? I have not I've not heard rumor. Maybe this was specific to the Pacific northwest. That was just one of those things that guys didn't tell girls, but I don't think you can. It. With force. This has been anatomy Corner Mike. Yeah Mike I did actually know this. Okay, it's funny to me. That I didn't know that at like fourteen or something when I definitely would have heard the story, and then it's one of those stories you know the stories that you hear them when you're young, and then you find yourself, re telling them ten years later and halfway through telling them you're like Oh this is a fucking lot. Wait a minute. Believe this. Saying that I had to believe a lot of other things to be true in order for this thing to be true, should we go to? The to the axle rose view now where we go, yes, axl rose few happen shortly after this, an axel might have been angry because they really liked Nirvana Nirvana continue to refuse to go on tour with them our plan he shows with them because Kerr thought, he was such a Dick of that interesting, but axel made some comments about courtney being a junkie mom after that article came out. "Loved each other so much. Sweet yeah, I like. What are the? What are the good parts of the relationship way? Can we talk about that a little bit? It's really sweet. They send each other love faxes. The most charming like nineties thing ever. Yeah, yeah, like sometimes. The only thing I can think of more ninety S, and that would be if they fed each other's Tamagotchis. But yeah I mean it's. It seems really sweet. You know they both. They both come from the same place kind of poor backgrounds from the northwest broken families like they really understood each other in that way, and they're both really ambitious. You know at the same time this is going on, you know she has whole and holes. First Album came out and ninety one pretty on the inside, and they're working on their second album while they're in this relationship. This a good time to bring up another rumor, which is that Kirk Vein wrote all of Courtney Love's music Oh yeah, and it's the belief, but link women aren't biologically able to rock. I mean okay so as someone who's in a relationship with another creative person, you know my husband and I are both riders. We talk about our writing all the time. We share ideas all the time. That's just part of the process, and if we're getting down to the nitty gritty like. Yes, he probably did come up with like a riff or two on the album, but also she. She helped him right heart shaped box like you know what I mean, and not just because she sent him a heart shaped box like literally like there's there's a journal entry of him talking about how they wrote. Right hurts you. You know what people in relationships, too. It's interesting that this is the theory that takes something that is really lake romantic and turns it into something sinister. Turns it into something one way. Yeah, right did. It's like she's this fraud. Because she's taking his ideas and putting her name on them, whereas he, of course, the genius of their relationship is just like spouting these ideas everywhere, and is one hundred percent responsible for his own creations, and like present responsible for hers like there's no cross mixing. Yeah, yes, I mean it's such a simple rumor to because it's just like. She had a career before she met him. She had an album. She wrote songs. There's a book it's called dirty blond, and it's the diaries of Courtney. Love and it's just all these like scraps of paper you know from her childhood and adolescence and there's just like. You can see the through line of like the holes lyrics in her writings through her adolescence and her twenties as you can with most musicians as you can with Kurt if you look at. If you look into people's diaries and journals like you're going to see that stuff and. I just want to read something in. You know that little thirty, thirty three and a third book series about albums so I read the one about. The house which is really good, it's written by a female music critic name and win Crawford according to talking about when they got their first major record contract sue for their first album..

"It's murky because it would have been right around the time that she was like about to get pregnant again, but. No one knows exactly when she found out, she got pregnant. We do know that she found out she got pregnant. She knew after that that she had done drugs when she was pregnant before she realized she was pregnant and then got off. Yeah, it's so. It's complicated and like like. We said at the very beginning like she has a complicated person who has. has done some bad things you know and like. It's easy to say like. Oh, God, if you. If you knew that there was a chance, you might be pregnant. If you are having unprotected sex, you shouldn't have been doing you know I. Think it's really easy to say those things, and it's not a responsible thing for someone to do drugs when they're pregnant. But I. Think the level to which this was bad for. Them are get so severe so so I lean. who someone who is so worried about his reputation, and what the world thinks of him, and now his family, his devastated by this article, according to just like whatever blow it off like and he is just so angry. And Courtney a number of times cites this as the beginning of like the end for him. The Vanity Fair article because she just thinks it's a sign that he can't handle what what the is going to do to him and then as a as a family. Part of that is that. Kurt and Courtney Typical Gen xers grew up in broken families like children of of divorces latch key kids. Latchkey kids and that was just a really heartbreaking for Kerr and I think they really wanted to have some kind of normal family. I'm laughing when I say that because I'm like what kind of normal family is his test to parents that are like on drugs all the time but The really did like love their child so much, and we're so tender with her and so tender with each other and. I think that he really wanted to break that cycle of like them. Having such a bad childhoods, their parents and wanted to have good childhood this before she even has the beatty. This article comes out. There's also the thing I mean. There's so much shame associated with addiction to most people that are addicted to substances or not like wild about it, and like I'm an addict, and it's awesome. Most them like go through the cycle of telling themselves that they're never gonNA, do it again, and then giving into their cravings, and especially with heroin where the cravings are. Bad and the withdrawal is so bad I mean seeing yourself and your wife depicted as heroin addict and having the country like debating your heroin habit, which is probably something you're really ashamed of. Is Just Tripoli upsetting? Yeah, so shortly after this comes out, they have the baby. And a representative in the Los Angeles Department of Family Services Kellyanne child services comes to the hospital with a copy of Vanity Fair, and says we have to see this. Oh my God. Oh, wow, sort of the authorities! Take Francis being away. Yes, they aren't allowed to take her home. And I think a week later. There's a court hearing and it's. It's ruled that they have to have supervised visits with Francis being for six months..

I guess I'm eleven. Yeah and hurt was like an outspoken feminist. Typical like early nineties way. What other people weren't doing time totally and the hair metal bands definitely weren't doing definitely not yeah so. Courtney get really serious like immediately after. Kurt show in Chicago. Yes, they get big immediately serious, so this is this is October of nineteen ninety one and they're married in February nineteen ninety-two. How a while four three four months! Yes, chance so they get. They get really serious really quickly and heroin comes into their relationship very early Ocho. Neither one of them were using before. No, they were both of them separately. Corny had already had a problem with heroin at some point. And had gone to Rehab and had cleaned up. Kurt had tried heroin. I would save probably like eight to ten times or something like that at that point. What's really interesting is that he had written in his journals that he wanted to become a junkie. And this is really I'm GonNa? Let me get this this passage up. If you guys don't mind, I know you like read passages. You do like reading. So this is from this book called Heavier Than Heaven which is a beautiful biography of Kurt Cobaine. This passage is about right after they met. They reunite at pro-choice benefit in Los Angeles backstage. They seem very much together. And many remarked how they made the perfect rock-n-roll couple yet later in the evening behind closed doors, their relationship to Comoros destructive bent. For the first time Kurt brought up the idea of doing heroin courtney pause for a moment, but then agreed be score dope when his hotel the beverly, Garland prepare the drugs. He injected her according to stand to handle needle herself, so kerr the former needle phobia handled things for himself, and for her. ooh, after getting high, they went out, walking came upon a dead bird, Kirk hold three feathers off the animal and pass wanted to courtney holding the to others in his hand. This is for you. This is for me, he said. And then holding the third feather in his hand, he added in this for our baby. We're GONNA. have she laughed and later remembered? This is the point when she first fell in love with him. And then he goes on to talk about how at that point? Heroin was no longer just kind of a recreational thing like he had already kind of gotten it in his head and I. Think part of it is that. It helped his stomach problems and let me read this as well so this is from Kurt Journal when I got back from our second European Tour Sonic Youth I decided to use heroin on a daily basis because of an ongoing stomach ailment that I had been suffering from for the past five years, and that had literally taking me to the point of wanting to kill myself for five years every single day of my life every time I swallowed a piece of food I would experience in excruciating burning, nauseous.

"They're trying to find his dealer. In those days. There are some accounts of him coming and going from home. There were people house sitting for them while they were gone, and these people were also really messed up on drugs, so their accounts are sort of murky. So turns out what happened was that Kurtz found one of his guns that had taken away and. He shot and killed himself in the RIM above their heritage, which was like a separate building from their house. So, no one thinks to go up there and the person that eventually finds him intellect actress, who is just going to their house to do some work and he happens to go up there because no one answers the front door. So I think. A lot of the rumors begin from this investigator Tom Grant. Who at some point in the next several months comes out and says. I don't think, Kurt. Cobain killed himself I think. Courtney had him murdered. What this private I guess! He comes out publicly and says this. And he has recorded. He records all of his conversations, so he has tapes and tapes of phone calls that he had with Courtney. I smell a book deal. This guy like try to cash. This guy's really interesting. I gotta be honest as I was researching, I was trying really hard not to dig so deep into the conspiracy theories, because I just don't WanNa give them as much credence as we give to the things that seem more with. About a person, but it is a rabbit hole for sure, and he has a website you know. I'll let you guys know but I don't think we should. People can find it if you will find themselves. It looks appropriately GIO cities. I, can say it in my head. It is like it's a black background with green like laying words right with leered lakeside -ment multiple Seidman you yes, and like weird like flashy gifts of like tax. Yeah, and eighty percent of the links are dead. Yeah, and it's like at this point. It's very charming and historic, but it's not trustworthy and I'm just sort of like if you want people to take you seriously. Do you take your website seriously. I, but that has been taking their website seriously so I think that answers the question. They like this lex boss. And this big sense I feel like whenever there's a conspiracy that comes from some sort of seed of something shady going on. There are weird shady things like around his death like the fact that he had been missing for several days, but I honestly think a lot of it is, and then all of these people were on lots of drugs, and their accounts of what happens are not gonna be absent of holes. That's not like an excuse, and it's not I don't know it's honestly just like. Like, a lot of people on drugs and they just don't remember what happened while I'm even people who weren't on drugs. "So to give you a little little context, so around the time Kirk Kobean those last few months of his life, they had been married for two years. They have their daughter Francis. Bean. WHO's about a year and a half? I think at that point. Nirvana's is probably most famous band in the world I would say like I. I'm sure that fluctuates, but you know at the time they were, and Kurtz had been suffering from heroin addiction. For probably twelve to eighteen months at that point like really serious while heroin, addiction and I hope feels like something that is by definition counter cultural getting that huge. We've just be I. Don't know I think it's like why Blend Courtney. Love when you can blame fame, and it's right there. That's my. And I. Just want to say right now is a disclaimer like it's really important to me when we're talking about this that I like focus on Courtney, but I think it's impossible to talk about her without talking about her now because. Their lives were so intertwined Ryan they were so famous, and they both had such an impact on each other things that were happening to him, because of his career directly impacted her and vice versa, so it's like yeah, you know as I was thinking about this I kept thinking like there's there's one funny interview with them is in. There's good documentary that came out a few years ago called the montage of heck. and. There's a home video of them where they're just sort of like bickering about something in a light hearted way, and she's like. Why are you always the good one and I'm always the bad one in. It's clearly like something. They understood about their relationship, but it's also just like immediately. The roles they fell into. In the world, and how they were perceived, that is true i. mean the ways in which Mayo rockstars get to be messes in public is very different than the way that female rockstars get to be messes. Yeah, and how can Morrison is like this angel of rocks still? Yeah right and I mean curtain Courtney both did a lot of drugs. Those were in and out of Rehab, but But I think we collectively attend to forgive Kurt for that a lot more, but yeah, forgive her for that. Yeah, so the run up to his suicide is all of this kind of getting worse, so he. He was using heroin pretty frequently. Were you know I would say a year or eighteen months? And then that just snowballed I mean like that? That just got worse and worse and. At the beginning of Nineteen, ninety four, the band had kind of Nirvana as. They weren't doing a whole lot. They weren't actually like their album had come out the previous fall. They had started to tour a couple times, but Kurt canceled the tours because he was struggling, but you know Kirk..

"Very so she courtney had the gall the audacity the nerve and the verve to record a song yes called ugly it wasn't about i know guy or any of the i the art so as an artist you should know as an artist let me explain her artistic no it's just that and this is something i think perhaps you might agree or agree to disagree with me something that i've gleaned and learned and observed in my personal experience living here in los angeles that that all the stereotypically or commonly assumed to be attractive people are all big fucking swirling godawful messes inside which is why they looked so pretty because there obviously this is a blanket generalization and complex get under the covers that's got onto the congress the the activated act so insecurity can breed many things on one of those things that can breed is an attachment to vanity and not just wigs by not just weeks no i mean those were touched by usually tape sinn vanity the body that is is a check tivoli freakishly muscular and and grotesquely perfect adjective us very well i love is like excuse me sir it couldn't notice how grotesquely beautiful you're looking to obscene themselves yet hideously protruding so disastrously from that tight something has to drive the obsession and often not always that obsession is driven by insecurity sure and i always looked i wrote a song in two thousand in before came out just before drug is called main gays yes that's right and it was all hollywood it was all about the main guys of west hollywood who you know were on my friends but i also observed in in in that perfect ultimate male aesthetic the insecurity that i saw myself sure which was growing up in a world being socialized in a world that held masculinity unrealistic expectations at the pinnacle of society and women understand it as well from beauty magazines retouching and buddy engine models and runways and men particularly gay men but now it's an epidemic sweeping oldman in the western world steroid use is up so yes it is the taking steroids losing their hair but then take doing cycle there hear that that all the time and then just cycle and then taking propitiate to stop the halos from the steroids you're taking and then injecting the fake tans you've got brown skin and then you've gotta also inject silicone into the scrotum because the ball shrink and then you gotta make the dick flop xactly a rich tapestry then there's also the party drugs that are probably going along with g and miss teen to turn and then of course true vodka as prep it's you know it's it's a fascinating thing to observe and i have been a part of that i think the interesting thing is that i never i never got there i never achieved my full aesthetic mel potential because of the duality i suppose it exists in my density of being caught in the act as well or at least for most of my twenties i struggled with do i want to be do i want to look like the dna couple model or do i want to be a woman my trans woman i would i would really fight with it and when i moved to west hollywood i was embraced and celebrated for my fishing in estrella it was always not good enough you're not you're not trying hard enough totally yeah share needles with me would be like oh great so you're going to just wear wing liner you stupid bitch yeah you know yeah and then i go to west hollywood and i was wearing like my human have wigs and my golly fashioned dresses in the main gays loved me and we had a great time and i was celebrated and i remember the trans questions in my mind that the books in the attic of my mind that had been put there and never sold it was rattling for my attention and i had to coal vanity my trusted friend my my my best friend my brother my sister and i had i said to her i need to have a conversation with you and i don't know what how it ends but i just need someone that i trust that what judge me that i can listen to because i whilst i had these questions about m i women i also had a lot of internalized transphobia okay had a load of generalized homophobia which i think stems from misogyny and i talked to vanity.

"While exuding total ease and artistic certainty at the same time in courtney is here to talk about it courtney burnett welcome back to the world cafe thank you yeah so new record tell me how you really feel it's wonderful first of all congratulations thank you you're welcome if i look through the track list we got hopeful listeners need a little time help yourself walking on eggshells and the big guns crippling self doubt and a general lack of confidence are you doing okay i mean when you yeah when you put it like that it really it really sounds like the back of a kind of selfhelp cassette collection but but it doesn't sound like that when i listened to it yeah well yeah i think it it kind of moves through the oh the emotions i think most of my collections of songs normally normally do that in some way yeah but first we're going to hear you do is city looks pretty from this record and i know that this was written in your twenties how did it end up on a record now oh i mean i started writing it in my elliott twenties and when i was writing all these new songs i i remembered that one and kind of you know added a us and added a the outra thing the big epic ridiculous like a guitar pot and and it was finished so sometimes i think it just takes a long time for me to finish.

"Passerby and we've all okay speaking with courtney force it like you courtney i followed my father in business he was a sports reporter and he's tell me he did a story about the great formula one driver one manuel fund gio the great argentinian drive or one of the greatest drivers of all time and he asked him this is in the nineteen fifties you know what thought he gave to the possibility of death and joe said oh death i give it only a quick fleeting thought for for you is fear something you need to have in that car or is it something that that hold you back is fear is fear necessary or is it something you have to expel from your mind when you're about to accelerate to three hundred miles per hour yeah i mean jeff to always have to be one of these cards of the same time down always taught me that you need to drive with that beer that's what's gonna make you a better driver that's what's going to help you to not get in trouble because the second you got me think you've got that thing handled on the second that you're going to be in trouble and so yeah i always out there driving with fear you got butterflies in your stomach you know when you pull up there and right before you slam throttle in yeah anything can happen but you need that fear you need on the edge of your speed because like i said impor seconds a lot can happen and you have to be ready for it you're not only of course the sibling and the daughter you were also the wife of a racer albeit in in a different kind of competition and so this weekend the five hundred you have more than a passing academic interest in the outcome where will you be this weekend yeah i'll be out here.
