"Posters can fix that kind of thing to some extent but in general. That's a bad foot gene to to to start a poll because of those inherent skews that you get with landlines The caller also asked about turnout. That's a great question and it's it's really really interesting because you know the last presidential election is typically the one that pollsters would look to try to anticipate you know what is what is the profile of voters. There's GonNa be this year but in two thousand sixteen you know. It was quite a break from voters. Turn patterns you saw during the Obama Administration but then in two thousand eighteen. It was a historically high turnout for midterm election. And so I think there is quite a bit of uncertainty as as twenty twenty going to look more like two thousand sixteen sixteen or is it going to look more like twenty eighteen and look like a public reaction to what they've you know. been seeing the last three or four years talking with Courtney Kennedy Director of Survey Research at the Pew Research Center on Science Friday from WNYC studios lots of interest. Let's go back to our vox pop back up. And let's let's go to. who were Puerto Valley Angela from Valley California had this to share in California? Some people want to put on the ballot whether ridesharing drivers and other employees noise like that should be paid on salaries or as contractors. But this question was very badly worded and and so It was difficult to answer and I just think that some of the question is need to have better questions. This one kept asking me again and again because it was trying to change my mind how I would vote. Good good point raise their. How do we separate a good? Paul how do we know a good poll courtney from bad one. What do we look doc for? That's a great question I mean I think that that caller was talking specifically about message testing which Oh I've heard from folks. It is annoying right. If you get called in in our subject to one of those polls I I just I wouldn't tonight at all. That can be a pretty rough experience so I would just say. Please know that that's doesn't represent all of polston polling. There's a lot of pollsters who most pollsters are not engaged in that kind of thing in a really trying to get just an honest read of how Americans are feeling. It's a question of good versus bad one. You Know I. I do. Think from Societal standpoint the most useful polls are not are not message testing. They're trying to get those. Those unbiased reads in terms of the methodology. What to look for you know when I my colleagues I would get this question? Ten twenty years ago it was really easy to answer. We could take off. You know here are five things as you look for and you know if a poll is good but as as our discussion has indicated is Doug rivers mentioned. It's really not that easy these days because you see tremendous tremendous variation in the field of polling. You know if you think about your your favorite news outlet They're all doing polling a bit differently these days. That's right so you still have. Some who are doing traditional telephone dialing random digit dial. You've got others that have moved online and within that online space. You see massive differences you've got online polls that are done with basically just convenience samples like kind of anybody can find online to take surveys but you also so have really expensive. Rigorous wants done online where they actually recruit offline by sampling addresses and re recruiting people to take take online surveys. So how can you tell which is a good one that you want to hang up on one of them what you want to stay on online with the other or He's on his online's lines surveys. Aren't they really still trying to figure out how to do them correctly. I would say as a field we are. You know and then there's a couple of things right so so this issue of WHO's doing the poll has come up in that. Is that does matter. So if if you're asked to take a poll and they will not tell you who sponsored the poll. They should good where we have professional standards as an industry and one of them is to be honest with respondents if they ask tell them who's conducting the research so frankly if they don't say that I would say feel free to hang up or click out or what have you similarly if you're in the Middle Poll and you know it might be one question might not not quite of land right with you. But if it's the whole survey sounds really one-sided You're under no obligation to to participate in message testing if you don't want the two pollsters really need to make a good faith effort to To get an objective measurement are you as a poster disappointed in the quality quality of general of polling. These days I would say I have a mixed reaction so it's important to know that the barriers to quote Unquote Bean. UPHOLSTER have basically been eliminated because of technological changes over the last. You know roughly ten fifteen ears and by that. I mean you can go online. And if you've got a few thousand dollars you can you know go out and do a national poll interview one thousand people. That doesn't mean you're trained to do that or you know how to do that. You know how to do the statistics on the back end. But you do see You know organizations kind of fly by night organizations relations. You've never heard of put out poll numbers and they get picked up in the media and sometimes you know there are actually reasonably good. But many times they're not in so yeah. I mean to be honest that that can be frustrating. All right we're GONNA take a break Get a few more questions if you're willing to hang around courtney a couple of minutes here. Okay we'RE GONNA WE'RE GONNA come back with Courtney Kennedy Kennedy Director a director of Survey Research the Pew Research Center one of the authors of the recent polling report. We're talking about You can see Courtney's Articles Great Hair Survey Science Friday dot com slash pole. It's really very in depth and will answer some of the questions we can get to in the short period of time we have but we are. We're GONNA talk more with Courtney right after the break. Eight four four seven two four eight two five five stay with us. You can also tweet us at SCI FI. We'll be right back I am I replied. Oh this is science Friday. We're talking this hour about the science of modern. Polling methodology has changed through the years the challenges now how to conduct polling especially online. My guest is Courtney Kennedy Director of Survey Research at the Pew Research Center. A couple of tweets that came. I'm in a kind of interesting Gordon one. Aaron writes There are so many junk calls nowadays. How hard is it to get a representative sample? When many people people like me just won't pick up the calls don't recognize? Yeah absolutely well we. We've certainly seen that increase the cost of doing a telephone pole because as you can imagine when fewer people answered that means you've got more time pain professional interviewers to dial more numbers to sort of replace the people that that aren't picking up their phone and it's hard to tease out the causality here but it seems very reasonable to Associate that to the dramatic rise. In automated calls specially to cell phones and especially that Kinda creepy spoofing where they pretend the numbers is your number or some number near you That's definitely had a bad affect on point. You know one thing that surprised us I think is is kind of in Insinuated in that that comment is you would assume that that means the polls are off. They're like how could you. How could the data possibly be any good when that kind of thing is happening in the background and One one thing that that study after study found that surprising is that despite response rates being low. If you're start if you are still doing it with random sample clean the data is still pretty good. It's not perfect. You know. We still have that margin of error but polls still actually do pretty well even at those low response rates all right. I'M GONNA leave it there on a high note courtney Thank you very much because I I've been wondering about polling forever my pleasure. I'm wondering how. Why does why did political parties? Each come up with their own numbers if polling supposed to be a science right yeah. They definitely released those selectively. So don't put too much credence into the police coming from parties. And if you WANNA see Courtney's study Courtney Kennedy Director of research at the Pew Research Center. If you're distrustful of polling hauling. We have a tip list of questions to ask on whether you should trust the poll. Based on Courtney Kennedy's expertise. It's on our website at science Friday dot com slash poll. Both a child whose parents had a cabin near Lake Michigan and as an adult during research on the lakes but one in particular stands out. I was doing research on like Karen. I don't even remember what we're looking at in that particular day it was late in the season. Maybe maybe August we are in. The middle of the lake is flat. Water clear blue skies and monarch butterflies were just plain everywhere. We're in the middle of their migration south it was so surreal and beautiful. I knew birds use. "We had people out there i it at every rally every trump rally every clinton rally and there were lots of what we say like canaries in the coal mine you know there were moments when for example npr's temer keith was talking about going through pasco county in florida where un i know you're familiar with florida because the data analytics team at the clinton campaign had said this is a swing area we've got to hold a rally there will more protesters showed up then actual people for hillary clinton so that was a sign right but can you extrapolate that kind of anecdote out to something broader that's happening it's not scientifically clear that you can actually do that actually scientifically you can't do that but there are a lot of these sort of anecdotal things that may be reporters had gotten away from and a lot of caveats that they'd gotten away from that they should probably get back to so if i carry forward your analogy of the canary of poll is a kameri in a coal mine we were kind of looking at the wrong canaries in the wrong coal mines the idea may be sound but the way we were going about using it and what we interpreted from that data we kind of got carried away in the wrong direction so david broder who's the former elite washington post columnist used to say believe your eyes he would tell political reporters and i think reporters got away from believing their eyes and more believing the data courtney kennedy talk about what happened after the 2016 election euchaired a task force of the american association for public opinion research as the industry was kind of licking its wounds going into 2017 talk about some of the things that were discussed then was there a sense of culpability was at a sense of role as happens now and and in 2016 just happen to be one of those years what was that discussion like sure we started with a big picture question which is this narrative did the polls fail we're all the polls wrong and we dove into that and you know it it's important to recognize that yes 2016 was important important year for polls it was a bad year for polls but the narrative.

"Error in the french primary with john by says the novelty of a center right primary open to left wing voters made it especially tough to figure who would turn out there was also a debate very late in the campaign that his paul missed but he also adds this lesson french voters don't think much of their political parties and they don't feel very attached to them now if only wentz person confronts who have confidence in the political bounties it's very very no it means that people don't trendy beauty of so much in politics and so did determined very mates sometimes when they're going to turn out tall not like deciders figured in november is polling errors in the us presidential race to courtney kennedy run surveys for the pew research center which did not published an election eve cole this year quickly kennedy says posters or examining several possible reasons for bad polling not in national surveys which were pretty accurate but in certain battleground states particularly an upper midwest the worst some systematic large polling errors in the same direction which is quite concerning for shirt in wisconsin michigan and pennsylvania the polls had clinton leading and she lost one factor kennedy says posters are looking at is late deciders in exit pose in the state's twelve percent of voters said they decided in the last week most of them went for trump in so few conducted your paul you know in the middle or late to of october you with missed that late movement she says there are some other post mortem questions for posters were trump voters less likely to take part in polls or less like to tell posters.
