That's while that is wild. I I will say two things. Okay, um, first about the success of Charley Pride, it's remarkable because he made his success in country music and C M W has a history of really being white. To be perfectly frank about it. Yes, and And Charley Pride was a black dude. Okay, so to make his success in that world, and that realm, I think is even more extraordinary. That's how terrific he was. And I'm sure he had to put up with a lot. But he a zip IA near as a black country Music star. A remarkable story now the other thing He died of covert 19 complications from covert 19. And you can't ignore that story because he was participating in. Was it some kind of celebration or awards show bread right before that. They think how he got covert 19. Is there a bunch of people there without masks? He was being honored at that awards program. Yeah, on the country Music Association was honoring him, but they get my lifetime achievement award. You're not going to, you know, Go tell him, you know, I'm staying home. It's a lifetime achievement award and was during the country Music Awards in Nashville. And Nobody there is wearing a mask or very few people. You've got covert, just floating around all over the place, and he got it. And ultimately, that's what took him down. So sad, sad. So anyway, a Brett very nice. Thank you. Those air significant losses. Very sad, but thank you for remembering them for us. Sure, the obituaries. "Two as well as several awards from the country music association which named him. It's entertainer of the year in nineteen seventy two. His final performance was on november eleventh at the cma awards where he performed kiss an angel. Good morning with jimmy allen alongside. His accolades pride gained nearly every other honor awarded to someone of his stature in the genre including inductions into the country music hall of fame and in two thousand and the grand old the mecca of country music where pride first performed in nineteen sixty seven in one thousand nine hundred ninety three but interestingly enough prides accomplishments well. They weren't just confirmed to the nashville scene. Honors came as from as far away as hollywood including his own star on the walk of fame in nineteen ninety nine and a lifetime achievement award from the grammys in twenty seventeen. He also repeatedly or reportedly served as the inspiration for the character. Tommy brown of fictional black country music performer played by the actor. He often resisted the label of pioneer. He said i've never seen anything. But the staunch american charley. Pride when i got into it. They used the different descriptions. They'll say charlie. How did it feel to be the jackie robinson of country music. Or how did it feel to be the first colored country singer. He went on to say it. Don't bother me other than i have to explain to you how i maneuvered around all of these obstacles to get to where i am today. "Toasts sinai get's sickening boots. Okay i up. Country music took center stage. Last night's twenty twenty cma awards. Longtime cma's mc carrie underwood pass the baton to reba and darius rucker who teamed up to co host. The live ceremony for music city center in nashville tennessee. The cma award honored and showcase the biggest names in country music as well as emerging talent dominating the country music airwaves. So many go through all of the categories and share the winners. Then we'll talk about our favorite performances. How does that sound it. Sounds i just want to say it was. It was so good. And they want to know that they all did a good job like using the producers were amazing like the whole show was amazing. Please keep doing it. Like i feel like we went from having no award shows. Having virtual award shows too now having like small audience and now we have like the audiences the stars which is really all. We need like yeah. I didn't need one more thing than what i just want. The country music association and everyone who is a part of last night held a big round of applause. Know that like we appreciate it so much and it was literally the highlight of my week. And i wasn't expecting it wasn't even gonna watch the whole thing. We're not gonna watch until real housewives of orange county start at one hundred percent and i couldn't take my eyes off of it. It was just brilliant performances. Everyone give it their all people in country. Music are so talented musically like they don't have any backup dancers like it's just so real and it was so good. I didn't think we could become bigger country as fans but like last night. Just solidified everything that i love about country music and and i will stand forever metoo and you know what it really made me realize it's like not only do i like love music and country music. It's like i think if i had to ever choose between watching the grammys or the as like i wanna watch this as totally and i think if i ever had the opportunity to go to like the biggest pop music festival or the backstage at one of them sipping out of red cups i would want to be at the hundred percent like and that's what i realized last night like i've always been into country in addition to everything else but i think in the last two years my love of country has only now realizing has become like my main interest in music. Yes i only listen to country music. Yeah i agree okay so entertainer of the year. Which is the big prize. Went to eric church. Yeah so here's the thing. I have a lot of respect. And and i understand eric church. I'm not a big follower. But i get i get it I did feel like it was lou. Zero and of course. Everyone's just going to say cloudy. You're saying that 'cause we're obsessed with him and his wife and while that may be true. I do think it was his ear. Well he did win album of the year lewd combs. What you see is what you got end of the year. So how do you window against eric church. But somehow he was the entertainer of the year. But if you're vocals and your album technically we're better. We'll i just wanna say our churches one entertainer of the year before eight many times. And loopholes has never it. And i think one day he will win it and if i were him i wouldn't want to win it for the first time in two..

"Don't we begin with some celebrity babies? Dean is They're not speaking to us. Or he's doing a report only for dogs. I'm not quite sure but at any rate Get to Dean in a minute, and we'll talk about that. Also, the CMA awards, the Soul Train Music Awards and Chicago fire, also apparently shutting down production. Which is really depressing because it was like things were just getting going again. You know how they got there He is. And now now they're not working in Chicago. Fire. You want to wait a year? There were here taking up. I've been been talking since you said good morning. OK? They got the button straight over there. No, they have shut down production over there. This is actually the second time. That this has happened over there at the sin Escape studios where they film Chicago Fire in Chicago Med in Chicago PD. A couple of people on the production team tested positive. So Chicago Fire is now shut down for a couple of weeks in September. This happened on Chicago Med, and they did the same thing. They shut down when some people on that show Turned up positive, but they resume filming again during the pandemic season. Nine of the show just was on the air last night, so You know these kinds of things. These kinds of things are happening more and more where last night with the Country Music Association awards. Some of the performers had to back out at the last minute because members of their bands Had tested positive. Nobody got into the auditorium and Nashville without being tested first, and some people did test positive. S O lady. A formally lady antebellum was supposed to perform. They were denied entry. Rascal Flatts was supposed to be there. They were denied entry, A swell because of People showing up testing positive. You know, I turned it down last night. I was surprised to see you know, people. It wasn't Ah, virtual show. They did have some folks there. Yeah, it was a very spread out in the in the auditorium in Nashville, where they actually did this show. You know, the performers on stage were all pretty spread out. But the audience was very sparse that you know it was like it was like a wedding kind of set up with those round tables if you took every other table away And they didn't have, you know 10 people at a table like you would normally see. So they were taking the precautions last night. What was interesting was when Justin Bieber and Dan and Shay performed together last night. Interesting combination. They performed at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles to an empty Hollywood Bowl, which was really weird to see this gigantic Outdoor venue and not a soul in it. And just three people on stage performing. We've gotten used to that. All right. Well, let me put on my cowboy hat here because I know you have some audio from last night. Some highlights Jota. Yeah, we've got some performances. They were heavy into the old school performances last night. I think we're starting off with Dan and Shay and Justin Bieber. But after that Reba McEntire and Darius Rucker and how about my new favorite old Dominion Old Dominion is doing the old song looking for love in all the wrong places? They did that great? Yeah. Jason Aldeen did pay tribute to Charlie Daniels band doing Devil went down to Georgia. Um Well, take a listen and you can hear some of the highlights.

"Winner Country Music Association honors and I'm Not sure what that one is that we just played, But that's that's no. That's that's devil Went down to Georgia. It is really maybe that's the middle bridge. It is the middle Bridge. Okay, I got it. You know, I would play that record, Dean. And then as soon as it started, I would you know, go do something else. Don't come back at the end, so I I'm not familiar with the middle of it. Sorry. That's what DJs do you For the record. You talk until the vocal starts on. Then you turn the speaker down in the studio. For many DJs, you go and grab a smoke. And then you come back, right are, you know, write some mad lives or go down the hall to the washroom, right? Some spontaneous ad Libs, pacing with crew, right? Exactly. That's that's what goes on behind the scenes with all that. I know exactly what I'm talking about Charlie and company they were what they do, like 250 shows a year. Something like that constantly on the road. I mean, these they're you know, nobody works harder than country music bands and certainly those Old style wounds. He died of a stroke yesterday in case nobody heard the news, 83 years old in a Memphis a Tennessee hospital, not in Memphis, but In in Tennessee, but he was he was a Trailblazer in his way with Ah You know, fusing country music and Southern rock. Ah, you know, in that era when the Allman Brothers were doing it, he was one of the very first to cross that bridge and, you know, I just remember A couple of times. When I first started at W, G, N and you know Bob Collins like to play certain songs once in a while, his favorite, of course, dead skunk in the middle of the road, but he loved Charlie Daniels, and he loved this song. Devil went down to Georgia, and if you walked into the studio to say hi to him, or You have something While this song was on, he would just put his hands up like, Don't talk to me. I want to hear the song. Charlie was really a good musician. He played on Bob Dylan's Nashville skyline sessions, so But more than that, really, really good. Ringo Starr, too. He was, Yeah, That's why he started offices. Such session musician played for Leonard Cohen and Dylan and Ringo Starr and lots of other big names who recorded in Nashville. Chances are that Charlie Daniels played on their tracks and amazing Fiddler but was very talented with others. Speaking of Ringo Starr, by the way, today is his 80th birthday. "I do wanna know like I'm not gonna break down every song or album or anything like that. Because you can just Google that. But we tell people a little bit about how you got your starts. Yeah. I really start with you. I listen to country music my dad, but what I love that country music for me is it's it's really been like my own journey. My dad listened to it. And we loved listening to together the car, and it was always kinda his music, and I didn't mind it. I liked it. Because my dad liked it. But it wasn't really like my necessarily like my my thing. And when I turned thirteen in discover, the electric guitar definitely wasn't my thing. I just listen any more country music at all still like to my dad liked it news, you know, can like older people's music and all that. And then when I was seventeen I went through all sorts of phases to like between thirteen seventeen of deep into like heavy metal and planned a lot of power chords on electric guitar, but not when turn seventeen I had this moment, I've had a couple of my life where it's just you know, like, I don't how to scrub a coin going out of slot machine. A hitting all the right levers where I just heard this friend of mine stopped me played his junior song. And it just anew exactly what I. Like, I want to do the rest of my life. It was crazy seventeen. I bear like sitting down under chairman like, whoa. That's it. That's the sound that been looking for. And it was so different than my dad's country music was Hank junior, you know, screaming electric guitars, and he's singing about naked, women and beer, and I was seventeen going. Yeah. This is a hike this country music. Wow. I want to do this. And so then I got into like from that moment on that day. I probably listen to I listen to Marty Stuart's a song called that's country and sorted listened to yoakum Alan Jackson. I mean, it's not get enough that really continues to this day. I'm always digging taking deeper for, you know, going back and music anyway. So I moved out to Nashville in nineteen. I went to school for your Vermont, the best that could transfer to Vanderbilt and the same friend that turned me onto country music. He was going to school here. This family gone to school here. Definitely wrote a recommendation help me get my grades terrible. But I got in the day. I got here. I got a job at the C may interning. You know for free working the country music association. Worked all towns temping organizations. I tempt everywhere. Learn how to make that work, and it was all of lower Broadway. Listen to bands playing I was writing songs of people like eight nine years as long story, but I had to get done lower Broadway at such a long story. But. Let's just say after eight to nine years of moving here. I got a publishing deal and that the director deal, but it started with polishing once you decided this is what I wanna do that. How do you think? Could you talked about the mail room? I feel like you've told me a story used to be an extra videos like no Markinor trying to be around it as much as possible, right? I mean, I have a plaque though, all the cat since I was about seventeen is a quote from Herbert Hoover the president. But it's about nothing takes the place of persistence or determination. Right. You can be education won't tell genius won't persistence, and determination or omnipotent nicotine. Just talks about that's been my whole thing. Just like there's lobbied or singers out there Lebanon songwriters out there. The me. I think everyone's towns better Qatar player the may. But I just I worked harder. I'm not saying, that's the reason why I got lucky, but I had bought a PA system. I play backyard barbecues crawfish boils and tailgate parties and weddings. And so many times without playing the wall known even blended in with the wallpaper, and I was also working to make money. "Couldn't warning millennials ten thirty one where lintel late AM eastern time, and w h Wadia it's because we were making waves in the media industry. It's like sometimes you have to be a minute late when year I dunno ting over access Hollywood at the awards. We told you we had a big announcement for our Sierra awards. But I don't think it was you know, right about you guys thought. No. But I did thing. I know they probably thought I don't know. What did you guys think let us now? But we are viciously. We can finally announce that we are going to be taking over for access Hollywood on the red carpet. So our Jenky little Instagram show last year, which was a huge success. If you haven't seen some of the footage in is like, the Messier, but most premium thing ever like we just didn't know what was going to happen. And it turns out that like Nashville just the country music association, really respects the hell out of us. And every celebrity no matter how big or small like stood by our booth, and like, we just didn't know what to do because we thought no one was gonna walk by. And it was so great. And even you know, it was so great that it caught. The I have some I don't know some some investors. Yes. Yes. And now we're bringing in the big leagues. I'm big time magazine editor jittery was watching. Yeah. So we will be liked. But she saw we always streaming live on access Hollywood's Facebook and YouTube pages, it's going to be so easy for you guys to watch. We'll make sure you have all the links before we're going live at five thirty and we're just going to keep going until you now Carly clause finally agreed to be on our show. It's true. I'm so excited, and I'm so nervous. Because the great thing about our show in general, especially our red carpet extravaganzas is there's no structure, there's no format. You never know. What's going to happen? A lot of it. Just hinges on our established relationships and our fan girl experience experiences. It would be like if you put to the biggest fans of Taylor swift like in the reputation and the reputation room with a camera interview, asking her all the questions that her fans wanna know. Like, right. Not like, you know, what inspired your album far too often are the people on the red carpet like not actually fans of the people that they're talking to you. Like, they have scripted a binder before was shares of everyone who their spouses are what they put it on Instagram in the past and their talking points like singles that are coming out albums that are coming out. We got that binder hurt in the trash heels Bellerini was ever a nice with Victoria's Secret fashion show. And if so who wasn't yes, that's what I wanna know. Who are you most excited to see I think right now, the combs, and Nicole L because I just I have such a place in my heart for them. Nobody's you end his manager copy who's like a big toaster. Every time you mentioned on the show. Like, you know, what I always hits us up. I think a lot like when we met Lu combs like we did it because we were just like being sleuth e in like, we became friendly with Nicole like when we got backstage, and he's very legit was at Madison Square Garden like it was very like everyone from the label like it was very real and his managers like someone told me that this podcast. They listen to was talking about us. And I'm like, we'll get us to lead Instagram girls. Like, literally our podcast is making the big leagues our podcast is making at least and like every. Luke, Luke Kuhn store managers girl. He took up with is a toaster. Like, everyone is just being infiltrated by toasters, and we wouldn't have otherwise up with yet. No member..

"Not fan club parties going on there are cover bands playing awesome country music so it's a real celebration but then at the end of every night nissan stadium where the titans play these stadium is taken over and i'm not kidding it'll be florida georgia line zac brown band brad paisley carrie underwood and keith urban in one night in the arena and it's that times for they do it on thursday friday saturday and sunday nights is epic think about that in any others on all of these acts the play play for free that's woods amazing they're doing it just to reconnect with their fans and all the money that's raised goes towards the country music association charitable ventures so every one of these axes playing for free so this is the equivalent of getting justin timberlake bruno mars cardi imagine dragons all of them to come in for nothing other than we want to relate to fans and do something great playing free shows night after night after night it's what makes country music special it's one of the things i'm proudest for my involvement of country music and it's a really cool piece of what makes the connection between the artists and the fans and in fact too tight all into sports because that's what we like to do here the nfl draft and nashville should be sending flowers to see a may fest because realistically anything you saw during the press run that looks special from downtown nashville anything you've seen from nashville where you say man look at their ability to handle a party handle a crowd has been learned by handling cma fest for generations this isn't something that's been going on for two or three years this is something that nashville been doing for twenty years so they they have so much experience in how to handle downtown because of cfs the nfl draft is going to nashville because of fest and what's crazy is they're willing to do it i mean do you think about the nfl draft in its timing happens to take place during the middle of what will probably be a playoff run for hockey for the predators and also the the music city marathon one of the biggest marathons in the.

"I'm not sure if you've been following what's been happening in the lead up to the country music association awards this year the biggest night in american country music but this year organizers caused a real controversy by telling journalists covering the events rediker red carpet to keep their questions only two music in other words don't ask country music stars at sea amaze about politics especially not about gun control this is all coming a little over a month after the mass shooting at a country music festival in las vegas and now another at a church in texas just this past weekend so the idea of sticking to questions about music didn't go over very well music journalists were outraged so we're some of the country music's biggest stars artists like merrin morris and brad paisley spoke out against the idea eventually the country music association back down the awards are tonight and whatever does happen on the red carpet it'll probably get a little complicated to be honest though have already been thinking a lot about this stuff i was getting ready to interviewed charlie daniels charlie daniels started his career as a nashville session musician he got a big break playing i'm bob dylan's album nashville skyline in the '70s and '80s he had a string of hits such as the devil went down to georgia he made music the mix southern rock and country and that way he helped set a template for a lot of artist you'll hear it the cma wards tonight charlie daniels is also a spokesperson for the national rifle association after nine eleven he wrote a song that a lot of people considered warmongering and islamophobic he's eighty one years old now and he's written a new memoir called never look at the empty seats so we talked about his career in music but also about his politics this is just after the las vegas shooting but before the shooting the happened in southern springs texas our conversation ended up going to some uncomfortable places take a lesson.

"Tomorrow night the country music community comes together for the cma awards just a month or so after the mass shooting at a country music festival in las vegas last week the country music association said reporters at the cma should avoid questions about guns or politics or risk losing their credentials the association has since reversed that decision we're joined now by don q sick professor of music business at belmont university in nashville and dan give us a sense of how big an issue guns are in country music right now after las vegas our people talking about them irs is kind of a taboo subject taboo subject and you know country the music is country and that means rural and so there's a long tradition of of hunting and fishing shooting guns and of course basically a conservative uh group they're going to other going to believe in gaza in terms of talking about it this community has been hit pretty hard to the trauma the uh the fears are all there so um they may have gone out in bottom guns but they're not really talking about guns or gun issues why do you think that the country music association initially said that it didn't want any questions to be asked about guns or politics at the cma awards i think there is a combination of good intentions does a lot of trauma hear a lot of uh mental health issues with artists and crew members and and all of that and then want in the warm fuzzy show with the you know you don't mess with the goose laying golden eggs so you wanted to be as happy and positive as possible well what does it tell you the brad paisley was the one who is cohosting the awards with carry underwood he tweeted out on friday morning i'm sure the cma will do the right thing and rescind these ridiculous an unfair press guidelines and then they did.
