"So then I said, okay, well, I know how to swim in bike. Let me let me see. I was already doing marathons. So to me, my logical, maybe not so logical thinking was, well, why am I going to start with a sprint? Triathlons. Let me start with a half Iron Man, which is 1.2 miles swim. 56. So a regular triathlon wasn't going to be hard enough. Correct. I mean, I was already running four hours. So why am I going to go run for 30 minutes? That's not going to work for me, you know? I need long distance. Long term here. So I signed up for the 70.3 in Panama City beach. And I remember when I went there, some of the people were like, wait, what? Why? So you hadn't biked or swam competitively? Heck no. No. The last time was the YMCA in Puerto Rico. But you're like, I got this. I got this. I know how to do this. I definitely know how to buy it. I mean, everybody knows how to buy it. How hard can it be? Exactly, right? Or if you know, you know, going back into it, it's great. And then I just started swimming. And it turns out that I'm above average in all three of them.

'Jaws' Expert Valerie Taylor Tells What It's Like to Get Bitten by a Shark

"A debate brewing over sharks Should shark bites be called attacks or just encounters as beachgoers. Witness survivors getting rushed to the hospital viral video posted just this weekend showing a hammerhead shark in Panama City Beach getting a little too close to swimmers. Some wildlife experts are pushing to rebrand interactions with the ocean's apex predator, calling them bites, negative encounters or incidents instead of attacks. I would say any time we're painting any wildlife as interested in harming humans. We're reducing people's positive feelings about them. People's desire to see them conserved and protected and increasing the likelihood that people see them as Villains or antagonists. For years. They've been the bad guys in movies like Jaws. We're gonna need a bigger coach and the Meg about a massive megalodon shark. But experts say in reality shark bites are rare and that using language like attack gives a false impression of intent. Page winter who was bitten by a shark in 2019, losing part of her leg. Told all Robin Roberts she didn't see her encounter as the Sharks fault. This situation has urged me to learn more about sharks. I didn't do something directly to the shark, but I was in his water. You know, That's his house. But Dave Pearson, who survived a shark attack in Australia and now runs a support group called Bite Club says avoiding the word attack downplays the very real danger. We can't keep sanitizing things to the point where we It feels like when you're the person involved. It feels like someone's dismissing your experience and dismissing your troller is something that's insignificant. You need to be aware that there is an element of danger out there and we call them Apex predators for a reason. And predators bite things. Even Stephen Colbert weighing in on the debate. I'm sorry, ma'am, a shark interacted with your husband's torso. He's experiencing a not being alive. Incident. Whatever they're called. Officials are taking these encounters seriously in Cape Cod, where at least 50 confirmed great white shark sightings have been reported this past month on the APP, shark tive, itty. Researchers deployed acoustic receivers to track great whites to keep people safe. It's a really valuable way to find out more about the movement of great white sharks. That's important information for the public to know when they are going to the beach. You know where they might be more likely to encounter a white shark. When you're at the beach. Look for signs of sharks. If there are seals in the water. There might be sharks nearby, because they eat seals. If there are birds flying in the air, that means they're looking for fish that sharks are also probably looking for. So if you do go swimming, try to go in pairs in groups Just be smart. Generally and also remember that unprovoked shark bites are exceedingly rare. There were fewer than 100 globally just last year at CBC's will review coming

"T pie is looking at me like he's just itching to say something, but anyway, But, Tom, it does look like still while they're not, you know. Super warm temperatures there above average. Do we still look like we're going to stay with above average? I would say through the middle of next week, at least, okay, That's president. That's pretty darn good. And finally, the final question. No, it's about food, and then we'll get to the And then we'll get to the The forecast, Uh, shrimp scampi. Uh, Kathy made of the other night. Uh huh. How do you make shrimp scampi? Well, that's a very, very good question. I'm just in judge. I'm just interested because I'm going to compare it to how Cathy did it, cause I paid attention as she was doing it. Yeah. Yeah, well, the first thing I do what I want to make shrimp scampi. I never want to use frozen shrimp. So what I do is I get on my oscillator, and it takes me down to the Gulf Coast just outside of Panama City Beach, Florida, where you can catch shrimp and not These flash them and then I'll get back on the oscillator. And they'll take you back up to Massachusetts. And then I'll get a frying pan. You know? Lots and lots of garlic. Okay. All right. Good. Hey, Yeah. Then I'll get some pepper with it. Yes. Then I'll put the shrimp which has been shelled in the frying pan, or I may decide to put it in the oven. And then I'll mix it all up and put a little cream in it. Cream E R A. M No. That's interesting in scampi because That's not a traditional scampi recipe. Tom I'm not a traditional town. I know. I know what I want to go back to asking about the oven, so they're in the shell. What do you know? I I shelled them. Okay, But wait a minute. What do you mean? You put them in the oven? You put them in the oven for the for the cooking portion just to get them. Quickly cooked. Yeah, I never ever boiled shrimp. Okay? Never Interesting. This is why I'm glad I learned this. Okay, so then so then the garlic in the pan oil, obviously, um, and a little bit of cream or how much cream are we talking about? A little bit maybe, Um Oh, I don't know. Quarter of a cup, Okay? And then what else? Also, I'll put in a tablespoon of butter. Look, I love olive oil and butter mixture I do to a lot of people say Oh, you're supposed to mix the two. They're great together. Okay, Go ahead. Go ahead. Pretty much it interesting. No other seasoning. On top of that votes it I like pepper. Yeah. Okay, well, some people when you're using shrimp, they like to put the white pepper in because you can't see the pepper. I don't care about that. That that that to me means nothing. Don't mind if you see the paper. That was interesting. I learned something cream. Well, I want to. I want to discuss one more thing. Well, we got to get to the break. But go ahead. Are you a divisive person or a divisive person? Oh, boy, you really caught me. I mean, I say I'm divisive Tommy. Am I correct? You know why? And I do believe that is correct. I am hearing all over. TV, Divisive fame, divisiveness, divisive divisiveness, Divisive Tommy and give up on electoral. It's done you I know you did, but it's done. They're not. It's done. It's everybody's electoral tour roll. Yeah. All right. How about the forecast, sir? Okay, We're looking for a chance of some snow showers and rain showers. Today. Not a big deal will have high temperatures near 40 degrees, so that alone will tell you that it's not going to stick to the pavement that's sure for tonight Cloudy skies. No temperatures near 30 tomorrow. Sunshine followed by increasing and picketing cloudiness in the afternoon high temperatures tomorrow again near 40. Then we have a chance of rain and snow showers again tomorrow night and then mainly strain showers. On Saturday with heist on Saturday is much as 45 degrees. So how about that know about that, and said Sunday and Monday pick of the long Monday partly sunny near 40. Pick of the weekend. Tommy. Thank you will talk to you Friday. Talk to you tomorrow. Okay. You see later. Thanks, buddy. All right, Tommy, be there. How about that? Surprise with the scampi? See, you never know. All right when.

"Please come back and talk to us. Thanks, Sergej and Orient. I can't thank you enough and I'm gonna hold you to that. Hopefully, long after you're not doing mornings will have a long nighttime conversation. We'll do that. And I tell you enjoy my book. It's called You can't dream big enough. Because I, sir. Okay, let's get in our way back machine. This is a conversation we had a few years ago with a Jessica Simons. She was in Florida, She saw several family members that were drowning. What could she do? This is her story. You may have seen this story. Maybe you didn't Panama City Beach in Florida. Some folks out there swimming. Everybody's having a great time over the weekend, and then they noticed that there's a group of people that are struggling out in the water. Day, the folks on the beach decided to form a human chain from the beach out to the water to rescue some folks from what was described in the news as a riptide from which these people could not escape. I think the reporting on this story's been really bad because they haven't described exactly what was happening to the folks out in the water or how the chain was able to reach them. But the woman who was on the beach and said, Hey, wait a minute. We've got to do something is a lady named Jessica Simons. Producer l. AFIS founder and she joins us now on W G. N. Hi, Jessica. This is John. You're on W g N in Chicago. How are you? Hey, John. I'm doing great. How are you doing? I'm doing well, Congratulations on behalf of everybody in this story in the world that needs good news once in a while. Thank you for what you did. Jessica. And thank you. I appreciate that. I don't think I felt it here. A lot of people dio. That's the way the story is being told me and I buy it. All right, so, But can you just tell us your perspective? I mean, tell me how you came to this scene and and what you saw. Um well, I was I was in the ocean as well. But I was on a sandbar. I was looking for sand dollars and kind of looked Towards the ocean. I mean towards a shore to see if I could see my family out there and they were all looking in one direction. The whole entire peach was looking in one direction. Okay, Pause right there. So you are out. And the ocean. But there's a sandbar so the water gets deep. But then it gets shallow again on there's a sandbar out there. How deep is the water on that sand bar? The sambar was probably a rock to my knees. Okay, So how far out to sea are you though you're standing in water only up to your knees. About? It was probably about 100 Yard. Wow, That's interesting, isn't it? You go 100 Yards out, and then it gets shallow again. Where? The sand bars. Okay, keep going. So there's a deep part that you have to get to to get to the sandbars swam back and ask the people on the beach will What's going on? Because I'm actually thought it was a shark or a dolphin. But as I stood upon the same bar, I didn't say none of that. I didn't see the Dolphins and I didn't see a shark either. And you stayed on the sandbar would probably be a right glam slam back to shore. And when I got there, that's when they let me know if there was some people surrounding they couldn't get out of a rich. What do you mean, But that's this is where I get confused. It would seem to me like doesn't isn't a riptide a fast current of water going back out to sea. Yet, Okay. But if if they were in that, then how are you all sitting there? Watching? Both seem to me like they'd be gone by now. What? What were they doing? What happened was that we have appear here and Bay County that it's about 1500 ft loan. They were all the way out there. They had struggled and crawled all the way to almost where we could see home because 1500 ft out there. I just felt like a little stick and we were able to. They have been struggling to get to us. And when we can finally hear the that's when people started looking on the beach because I risk remaining people to help them, And in this in this, these people, though, there were 1000 1500 ft out. Were they able to stand as well? Like you? Was it relatively shallow water? No. When they were 1500 ft. Out. We can hear them and and then, just like little specks. They were so exhausted from swimming up to us one only when I finally When we could finally here, the only they were released about 300 George from us. We could hear them from there, so you so they're sort of swimming back against this current, but they're struggling, and they're yelling for help. Yes, exactly. And only two of them have float out of the non that you can only imagine how exhausted the ones where that did not have a float, and my understanding is that's a family of people and the one had gone out after the other to try and rescue each Yes. And then other mother family there with a girl named Kavitha. She is, um he was by ourselves. And then there was a couple an Asian couple. They somehow all got sucked into the same rip Todd. So there was a family of 61 girl and in a couple that made total non people that was out there. So you're watching this now from the shore, and you're watching this? Group of People struggled to get back in, but also fighting the current. That's pulling them out. So it sounds like there may be in a neutral position. They're not gaining any ground. But you can at least see them there. Okay, So now what happens? Well, like you said, there wasn't gaining any ground. They were fighting and fighting and they were yelling at Grant directed them. I wrote, Um they were upset with the kids the police had showed up and the police can't do nothing either of the current dance of strong They were waiting on a boat, but it never showed up and told the very end when we had already gotten everybody out. Where's the lifeguards? And there's no. They have paddleboards or surfboards or something. Yes. Now the lock ward skills at five o'clock every single day, no matter what they get off at five o'clock, so it's slim at your own risk after that time, and it was about 6 30 Andi the paddleboard. They didn't have a final words or anything like that. But there was a guy out there and have a surf board. And he was surfing a wave to the ways we're about to raid a 4 ft. Tall So it was out there swimmin and sharpen it. And at first I got a little angry because I was like this man has a certain four eye. Dude, stop serving it. But as a slam out there, I realized he was part of the rip Todd. He was also out there and got stuck in it when he was surfing, and he had the Asian couple on top of his. Okay, So now you're watching this from the shore. So now and everybody the cops were there. Nobody has a plan and we're waiting for a boat That doesn't show up. So then what happens? So we have my husband comes over because we had my whole family there at the beach. So my husband walks up and there's some gods. They're talking among their still shot. They can do and you can hear over in the different film yelling at us throw a rope or a train or a road. Do something weird Rounding. So my husband.

"What we were on the break we were talking about Panama City beach and we haven't talked a lot about residential arrogation Darren. I'd like your take on this I'm going to. Read something to you real quick Panama, City beach residents may have to spend up to a thousand dollars to upgrade their arrogation systems. Folks we're talking about residential irrigation systems in front of a house thousand dollars is pretty big expense to most it. I'm GONNA spend that at my house and that's a lot of money when you go house to house to house in areas that already maybe possibly years ago spent the money that they had saved up to put an irrigation system with her house. So. Panama City Beach Show. Says residents may soon have to spend up to a thousand dollars and I'm getting down to the. Here's a reason, a backflow prevention device to be installed on all residential irrigation systems that use drinking water. They're talking about doing this the device will feature individual check valves that will hold a certain amount of pressure that allows water to come through the pipe. Preventing contaminants from back washing into the public water system. They've got a little picture of it here in the article. So this is a new invention, not this multi equipment that has. It's not that we've been in the centerpiece needed Panama City Beach. Sounds like the I it's new to these residents. You say that's not a new device. No. We do it with center pivots way have been done thirty years. We put pesticides we put fertilizers we put everything through these systems. They're doing the same deal with residential, but it's smaller scale actually get ready to put a loan system at my house will have put. backflow, preventer, but. Not a thousand dollars or like hundred twenty bucks. So this is essentially just a check valve. It's it's just a ball valve that allows water to come through one way, but won't let it flow back the. That's right. And you're saying they're not a thousand dollar hearts that the government inaction right? Their government action they're going to get their pieces of Pie. They're gonNA make about eight hundred dollars on each project. Allow. That sounds like. Something I recall typical. Yeah, it does. Yeah. I think it said somewhere I read in here where if the homeowner felt qualified or wanted here it is they can do the work themselves if they feel like they're capable or they can hire a plumber to have it done, you can take up your own yard and for this thing in your self if you're so inclined or hire someone that knows what they're doing and another eight hundred dollars on top of. that. For this guy to do it for hierarchy guys for a thousand dollars to two hundred dollar device. Crazy. Yeah. Tell me a little bit more. I found part of what you said intriguing chemicals, fertilizer pesticides, things like that. Those will come through the arrogation system. So you're mixing those what the water that they're putting on agricultural crops, sod farms, things like that. Yes. Sir Really it's something to do all the time now. It's much cheaper than having plane flight on or a grand requesting an and put it on because you're already spree in the water on it. So there's I assume they're something that would put the amount of the ratio of pesticide to the gallon of water that's going on so that you're not just dumping it all in one spot, you're getting coverage across feel very, very good piece of equipment called injection say that one more time can in injection system. Okay. All right. Would you say those are almost arrogation systems or fifty percent or it's portable remove it from system to system oh like on A. Yep. Okay. In the end, it just drafts off of the irrigation. System. Towers. So I understand the concept I've been around you know center pivot irrigation systems before they're on towers that are anchored in the center of the ground they and they go obviously down into the the center of the pivot. That's where you would park the device or apparatus, and then it's going to pivot around that all the while feeding the chemical, the fertilizer pesticide into the water. Yes, sir. While it has be in front of Every will now drilled. Or. If it's an existing, well, they have to have a communication backflow preventer on him now. Okay. Same reason that Panama City beach is looking for their residents to have a backflip vinter. That's interesting. So this is not necessarily made the homeowners not gonNA like they're sure not gonna like spin in one thousand dollars but is it needed device in your opinion? Oh Yeah. Even here in Kansas City you've got these big corporations got really nice loans in love those. They're feeding the fertilizer and everything to through their lawn system. An interesting. Interesting that's what Arrowhead Stadium does. nope, not, GONNA have and they're both looking at me like Trina. that. It almost happened and then you look. You're so I don't know why keep laughing about this, but I gotta bring it up before we get off this show. I found it kind of interesting. A Japanese Ninja Museum I heard my story I'm switching gears right down when I gotta get you guys take in and thanks mean the information on arrogation systems is tremendous but I, gotTa tell this Funny Story Real quick and I'm just I'm always looking at news. Still th-they thieves broke into a Japanese Ninja Museum and sold million yen. Helps so ninjas broken in the Ninja Museum stole money. What happens broke into their. Broke into their own museum Mex- sold a million and the end. User just use the key. All I can take spurs like mission impossible style like hanging from the ceiling on a rope just to get their hands on a cash registers. Crazy. This is almost a I don't know if you'd call it going viral or not, but it's all over the Internet and people are now they're they're posting pictures of Ninjas that are fighting. Breaking in you know hiding behind the curtain with the got all the the traditional dress on so I. Think it's a hilarious and has been inches broke into the Ninja Museum and sold a million yen out of the safe. My question is, how do they even know they were broke into I? Mean this guys are good. They're they're Ninjas right? These guys must not have been engines and engine museum is like Let us train you in our ways. Yeah, they I'm just going through looking at these videos of it. It's Hilarious I. Bet. So my favorite news story of the weekend was there's been a safe that was left on New York, farm what yeah. Just a mysterious safe left on a New York farm just random people left to stay with a note that said, what did it say if you can open this? You can have what's inside so We're got around this talented all the townsfolk came to this pharmacy trying to break into this AIDS and the owner had end up hiding safe so that he could. You Know I. Don't know have it for himself or donate the money I don't know I. Guess they still haven't broke into the safe. So it's a local mystery in New York. We get it I just found it. We get this out. Listen to this clip from the story when a mysterious safe was discovered in this field on it's a note saying whomever opened it could keep what's inside. It's pretty heavy I'm thinking five, six, hundred pounds least this safe now sits on Kirk Matheson's farm. He says, once residents heard about the safe many tried and failed openness deputies even had to be called. Budget damage to it and they knocked off. The dial in the handle and they worked on the hinges. Kinda beat it up Mathis says he has no idea who left it in his field. Guy Or kids we got some crazy kids here. Real jokers it sounds like we ought to do and vary, but is hilarious. We get some crazy kids here in berry even jokers even Joe, there's if somebody has left had safe out in the middle of his field with that note on it that's pretty clever. I mean number one. How did it get there a notice?.

"Jakey hope you're doing while this morning Michael Bauer joins us now from update on what's happening with Corona virus numbers. My gosh, Michael We started to get out and about everything you know, kind of went crazy again. And I think I think had a false sense of security when it was time to open up again in hoops. Yeah. Corona viruses? No, not so fast yet, So Ah, We're a hot zone here in Alabama. I think you saw that the number of states now in the White House list. Um But yeah, the numbers we're still kind of not not where we want him to be. No, no. And you're you're seeing all of this kind of play out in a similar fashion, right? You're seeing where you're looking at Los Angeles County and in California Mayor Eric Garcetti. They're saying that they are on the brink of shutting down again. Why? Because they've seen its highest number of Corona Corona virus related hospitalizations since the pandemic began, and the story goes as my parents tell it there in California. That once the governor shut things down early on, everything was good. But then you started having local municipalities, saying we should be able to start opening up. We should be able to get the economy back moving again, and he started allowing the municipalities to do that on their own. And then that began kicking off the new round of Corona virus. If you will have found peace, it's the same one but That's what started getting the infection's up there to a point now where they're thinking about going into shutdown again, and you've got a number of places across the country showing significant upticks in Corona virus hospitalization. So even though President Trump said yesterday on Fox News that this was young people who would heal in a day and that they were making up many of the new cases Boy. There's a lot of states who would disagree, including Florida, where 100 hospitals have run out of I C u beds for adults where in Texas they've had a record 130 fatalities, its highest one day death toll, And that's just kind of the tip of the iceberg. As you're seeking one Texas County 85 infants have tested positive for Corona virus. So this is young. This is old. This is All across the board, a concern and in the majority's places, not a lot of masking going on, And that seems to be at least at one point. That's what a lot of health officials are saying can help the cause. It's not the only thing it can help. There's more that needs to be done. I just don't know for willing to do it is a country Well, the state of Alabama's you know, pushing towards possible stayed home again. The governor hasn't gone that far. Yet. She did put the masked ordinance in this past Friday, Thursday, August and We're in Gulf shores over the weekend down along the coast and I had mentioned about a month or so ago We were in Panama City Beach, Florida and that time about, I guess 34 weeks ago. Not so many people wearing masks whatsoever, in fact, were kind of shocked The only people wearing the mask with staff there at the Holiday Inn resort in Panama City Beach, which is absolutely beautiful, but this past weekend in Gulf Shores, Alabama, I would say it's probably 75% of people had masks on unless they were outside of the beach. All the tents were set up further apart than you normally see. They had the beach chairs and umbrellas. That cruise setting those things up were further apart than you normally see as well. It was a crowded beach, but there was a lot more social distancing going on. Which was good. Any time I got inside the lobby or the elevators, masks everywhere, which was also good, So the indication is that if we continue to put these barriers up, meaning the masks I wear one. You wear one and we keep our social distance. You know that we can kind of turn this thing around here. But, Michael, I'm sure you've seen and heard too, though. Some people are getting some false sense that you know there could be some numbers that are being reported. Current viruses aren't really, really just to kind of beef up the numbers. My my wife has a friend who got a phone call from some health experts and said, I understand you had current virus. How many people in your household? She's like, What does that have to do with anything? And they said Well, with anybody that's in your household were putting down his Corona virus, and she's what you're talking about. They haven't even been tested, You know, think that they're trying to push that envelope a little bit. Yeah, it's one thing to say that they may have been exposed to it. It's another thing to go that that a positive test that doesn't make any sense to me that seems like kind of an odd way to go about it. And and that's after you hear revert from some health experts that the numbers are underreported in regards to that Also Yeah, I think you know what we have to look at is the and this may be. The only thing we can count on is hard. It's just look at it as the people who are hospitalized in the fatalities when you're seeing you know, Ohio who was out really early there, Governor. The wine was way out there. Remember, he canceled the primary that was supposed to be there and then later had it by mail because of concerns of.

The numbers are going up. But, you know, I also want to remind everybody, you know, the mass majority of people survive Corona virus. All right. I know. You know there's two sides of this, but I'm going to be wearing a mask. Ah, a lot more now because of what's been going on. When I saw What I saw at the beach this weekend. I thought Oh, my gosh. Lifeguards union says de Blasio pool plan is dead in water

"Welcome to CAP. CAST is June one, thousand, nine, hundred, thousand and twenty. Here is your news from around the world. Kind of Kinda works imagine if we had like a bad. Like some kind of channel, six or something. The New York Post Nolan Hicks of the New York Post is reporting that the lifeguards union has said no to build a Pasi does plan actually the New York Post, so let's go ahead and read the headline because that's that's what they do. Best Lifeguards Union says to Blasios Pool. Plan is dead in water. Like. So here's here's what no one has to say. Cools out for summer. There is little chance. The big apple will be able to open its outdoor public pools this summer. Do staffing shortages and training snafus despite Mayor Bill De Blasio, publicly floating the notion in recent days, according to the head of the union, representing city lifeguards. Just WanNa editorialize for a second. This is why I love the post even when they're like reporting there still so much editorial just baked. Like the Pun about bill, De, Blasio floating public notions. Quote I'm not hopeful pools. Sorry excited on that hopeful, the pools is and said Hair Henry Gerardo. President of AF. District thirty seven, who said the coronavirus pandemic has delayed and complicated training so badly. That is unlikely they can get staff certified in time. I don't think we'll be ready to have enough personnel to do the training and get them certified in time for the Pool Story Open. He told the post quote. Instead he said the city and the union have focused their efforts on getting lifeguards ready to patrol city beaches, offering some hope that New Yorkers will be able to find some escape from Gotham off swelling summers. Interesting sentence the parks. Department fifty three outdoor pool has been a staple of summer life for decades attracting more than one point seven million visitors during the summer of two thousand nineteen alone quote, we are currently training lifeguards in order to open our beaches for swimming, if and when it becomes safe, says city hall spokesperson John Jane May Meyer quote. We continue to recruit and train lifeguards and are assessing. If it is possible to open pools this summer end quote wanted to bring the story up because New York. City has some of the most pools per capita anywhere in the world. There's a lot of people in a very small area and I. Don't know if you've been to New York in the summer. Have you ever been to New York in the summer before now, but I've seen movies it's. Looks uncomfortable. Talk Shit Right? Yeah, it's it's hot. It smells like urine. I've heard that a lot. Like, like the urine. Smell really comes out in the summertime. Hug. It really does it off an especially. If it's like just started to rain, because then it likes teams and you're. To Crow But this is, this is a really big issue. I mean the lifeguard shortage around the country is impacting a lot of places in their ability to open ever GonNa get a little later in the stories like the time line to get people in the door has been pushed so far down the line that we find ourselves. Potentially, not able to open spaces that should be allowed to be open if you don't have enough lifeguards to sit in tower, no city or town is going to open up their aquatic facility, so I have a feeling what we're seeing in New York is going to be the same repeating story in a lot of other places around the country. Talking about public pools. So! Lifeguards Union in New York, city, so like any pool needs to have lifeguards, and within certain like obviously private clubs are an exception, but any public facility has to have lifeguards there within this union. And in order to be a union member, there's all the stuff that you have to do and in order to qualify just to be a lifeguard. There's a lot of stuff that you have to do to. So. By them saying they're going to focus on opening up the beaches. That's probably because they can. I have more of a capacity of people at a beach than they can add a public pool, so they're. They're trying to triage their resources to the place where the feel they can give the most people the most released. Okay come say who's really dying to go back to a public pool like. Let's let's. Have you been to put to public fault. Me Personally Yeah. Santa Cruz? Cabrillo is the closest, and that's not even public. Grafton Sale. But I used to live back east, and my family's from back there in like there are community pool is all over the place like that is people. When people live in apartments, they can't have pools. Most apartment buildings can't facilitate like a pool on the roof or something so you're kinda limited to twenty four hour, fitness or New York, Sport Club or wherever?

NYC Sean Bowditch who says even though more people than usual we're at the beach there was room for a stroll New York city's beaches are also open for strolling but no swimming and governor Cuomo says veterinary practices can fully re open on Tuesday Dr Peter sober off of New York cat hospital in Manhattan says even the vets have been able to treat pets in urgent need of care opening up for routine visits like rabies shots is important how many of those rabies vaccines are now overdue it is very welcome news that we can and will be able to catch up and get to get our patients with the supposed to be he says veterinary clinics will continue to collect animals at the door and communicate with their owners by phone.

New York City beaches open for holiday weekend, no swimming allowed

"A few days at the beach is typically a no brainer for Memorial Day weekend needless to say it is a little bit more complicated this year some beaches are open some are restricting who can go others are restricting what you can do there here to tell us where new Yorkers and new Jerseyans can go to welcome the summer wireless socially distancing is WNYC's Karen Yi and the Jake often hearts of Gothamist Karen Jake hello hi David it it it there is still so much we don't know about cope with nineteen but many epidemiologists say that with social distancing precautions in place heading to the beach does not pose a large threat for people in low risk groups Cameron let's start with you governor Murphy said beaches would re open for the holiday weekend is that right yes that's right so Murphy has said if speech is re opened they need to limit the amount of people on the beach and enforced social distancing so it's really gonna be up to each municipality to decide how to do that and what parts of the beaches or boardwalks to re open so remember not all of the beach is closed during the pandemic some have already re opened and some remain partially close and it's equally as complicated in New York City right Jake governor Cuomo joined New Jersey Connecticut and Delaware to open up the beaches but mayor bill de Blasio technically won't open up city beaches that's right David New York City is fourteen miles on public beaches are technically close what that really means is the beaches are closed to swimming sports picnics many of the social things people go to the beach for but you can still walk sit on the beach or even dip your feet into the water up to your ankles the idea is to discourage nothing Yorkers from going to the beach so it's not over crowded what about beaches on Long Island to Jones beach the Hamptons these are very popular spots for new Yorkers or they could be an option many all island beaches will be open this weekend but they're not exactly rolling out the red carpet for us New York City residents several towns including East Hampton have plans to limit or entirely banned outsiders from their shores that's led to some regional contentions of Nassau County official had to walk back in down and out of towners on Nickerson beach after my colleague Sylvia Chang points out that beaches that receive federal funding must be open to the public the state run beaches like Robert Moses in Jones beach will be open to everyone but they're restricting capacity to fifty percent and governor Cuomo says people could be turned away from parking lot as early as ten AM single parking is always a problem and beaches in both states Karen tell us about the Jersey Shore is parking to be restricted even more than usual yes so again it's gonna come down to home rule it's New Jersey right so it's gonna be up to each town since sandy hook which is run by the National Park Service is limiting parking to fifty percent and so is island beach state park which is run by the state mayors have told me that they're gonna be announcing reminders on loudspeakers there's gonna be civilian ambassadors patrolling the boardwalk there's gonna be a lot of signage but really it's gonna have to come down to trust trust that people will do the right thing and act responsibly what Jake in New York City you have reported on members of the NYPD enforcing social distancing measures in physically aggressive ways in the subways and on city streets can new Yorkers expect a large police presence on the beaches what is the plan for monitoring resource can definitely expect to see a major law enforcement presence this weekend and why PDP stale has been up thirty percent they'll be joined by parks police and thousands of social distancing ambassadors similar to New Jersey if things get too crowded the mayor says they may even put up fencing literally barricading the beaches anyone who tries to swim will be ordered out well in New Jersey some mayors are concerned about not enough police presence on the beaches Cameron that what are you hearing I spoke two point pleasant beach mayor Paul Kenitra and he's very concerned about this so his speech is partially open not the boardwalk so this means that Jenkins beach is also gonna be close but the biggest problem for him and re opening everything is that he says he can't hire the seasonal officers who normally boost up as police force during the summer because all the training academies are closed so for the things that are open for the part of each that is open he says this weekend will be a test run for whether the precautions they've implemented will work we need to see how realistic it is to have our badge checkers wearing the mask and gloves and in hot weather we need to make sure that our lifeguards are able to you know the date people and do things appropriately with the set up that we have one up one down on the lifeguard stands in with the new half the filters for their resuscitation devices so the mayor said there's really no playbook for this I mean everybody is really trying out what works for their particular beach okay so if people can solve the puzzle of finding an open beach what happens when they get there will there be open public restrooms or boardwalk restaurants open for food pickup so curbside pickup is allowed for nonessential businesses take out is going to continue for restaurants a New Jersey recently allowed to go cocktails on the public restroom issue again that's going to depend on the town whether they decide to open those or how they apply limits to that the one thing that the state is encouraging is that everyone wear a mask right and it's the same thing in New York there will be some to go through the options available re sparked beaches are is open many of the vendors on Coney Island and they'll be some bathrooms and Porta potties starting this weekend and finally you keep in mind the water's going to be fifty five degrees not exactly swimming weather even if you are out yeah I think that's gonna keep a lot of people out of the water we'll have to hear much more about how it goes this weekend WNYC's Karen Yi and the Gothamist reporter Jake often hearts thank you for joining us thanks

"It's the it's the high point of my day but I expect on his side that before Donna it's great to have you with us on the show hello mark thanks for having me my pleasure you touched on something at the beginning of the show about there being two diseases wafting in the air and that one of them is my opinion is that one of them is the crown of virus the other one is like alcoholism and it seems like in flea and Wormer and now appear to Blasio are drunk with power I'm sorry go ahead no no I I wouldn't disagree with that that said suddenly turn the case of insulation to Blasio and like a bunch of these people yep he came out and said today that anyone who tries to get in the water to be taken right out of the water speaking of the city beaches hello I think was I hope people have their cameras going because it'll be like a Buster Keaton collector the keystone cops well well it it will decide exactly you can always only make a break for it trying to swim out from the beach into international waters and and then just log off of the couples as they come out they jurisdiction ends however many I have a far out of the water it is and then actually it isn't funny because if you take these people seriously right this thing is contagious all the people gonna be swimming out all the and the New York City police gonna be swimming out in mosques you must get soggy it makes it hard to breathe they are they going to be you observing social distancing when they're trying to drag the swim out into the water the policing if you take it will build the Blasio says seriously then actually the policing of the event dragging the guy out of the water is actually more life threatening than anything the guys think there's no science behind any of this Basil said there's no science behind the two major rule that's that's what's gotten so ridiculous about it things that are actually the two major role was just an arbitrary figure out the six feet picked out because it's like roughly twice build the Blasio's height that is roughly deal but it's tougher to build the Blasius heights mass six fade out whereas if you said thirteen feet which is the distance the virus can travel than most most people don't want that what thirteen features is that the length of my living room all half the length of my living with it people don't know that so they just picked on that number arbitrarily the six feet two meters thick and the other thing is the idea that they're actually wrenching people out of this now it's now become this is something when you see it Donna what some of these things it's very much political activists like you say out the New Jersey Jim but the beach is just like regular people who are sick of being told they have to stay indoors this isn't even if politics has now become a thing between people who favor keeping you in goals and people in favor of letting you out of dole's then we have degenerated into the most simple terms society in human history who would ever thought that would become a political issue Donna you've got you got it capsule my tongue I don't know I ridiculous it's beyond reason well well yeah it is a it is billed it is beyond reason but I think as we were talking about in the in the last hour you know because this is such an extreme thing the politicians are never gonna back at back up out of this that thing now is basically they've then they've got themselves out on a limb their way out of the end which has seen twig and their trick is to slow things down so they can call back to the tree trunk without having to admit that they've inflicted huge damage on people for very little benefit and then it's like well I think that's why Cuomo came out and said there won't be any lawsuit well no no this is America they'll be lost still you got you got say you Kansei thing out about anything and and it was it would be the first thing in American history that didn't have lawsuits if that was the case that's that's actually an interesting but thank you very much for your coal and a daughter that's Donna in high point North Carolina and as I said it it is the the high point of the day once the lockdown a tough slog down many lockdown self imposed lockdown when you actually look at the grass you look at the statistics it's not actually borne out by.

I mean if you guys ever want I have so many recommendations like we stayed in some amazing hotels It is really touristy and very like it literally felt like the Brunch. We did today like I thought I was on Habit Kinney. Okay in the downtown booed. Do you think it's because used to what I find is if you stay at the nicest places you're going to be treated like a tourist. I'm talking about the town was like wall to wall shopping now. And you're like Oh but I also thought that was the best part of Bali like Redid. Chengdu and like the beach towns. I don't know like people love them but for us we were like I wish restated into booed in the jungle and it just felt like any generic touristy beach town. I think he'd be an yeah. And you're like all right. Everyone's tourists there. Where at least in the kind of jungle areas It felt more authentic. Can you just sort of had to like pick and choose where you wanted to go? But it it's amazing. 'cause they have the infrastructure so like you can do the wild jungle getaway but still like Oh. I forgot my toothbrush. I can buy one. You know like yeah you can do. That's convenient sort of a mixed review. No I loved loved Bali like I want to go to different places in engineering. That's what I was GONNA say like. You think that. Yeah just did Allie. In a way that you're like I might not have done. I might not do it the same way again. Oh Yoga's everywhere no like more yoga right down the street in you know what I mean like. Oh I did more yoga last week that I did hear in Bali. Yeah it's just everyone's just thinking about it. Yeah you have all these like things you think it's going to be and then you get there and yeah like anyplace you make it what you want it to be. Okay I like this one. What country or region has the best looking men? I would say Denmark Jan Martin and Martin so random I know but it's they're all beautiful razz you agree tummy like all tailored. They're all they all bike everywhere. So they're all fit and they all wear like they're like skinny cut pants and they're like nice shoes off and they're all very pleasant everything pretty much the antithesis of you figure that.
