"But the kid me me belief and you go back to you. What he has been on tape. And then you go with what you believe in the person and i guess the accumulation of those two things by the end. It was a very easy decision and trae. Lance had a heck of a weekend twenty got in there Against the chargers last night. We'll talk about that in a matter of moments right here on the rich eisen show back here on the rich eisen show with our radio. Audience are peacock audience peacock. Tv dot com to watch us everyday. We've got some interesting and some exciting name image and likeness rich eisen show news to announce coming up. Shortly you're on the program very excited But for the moment let's check on Some all twenty two with Some of these kids trying to make starting jobs less than three weeks from now We Check in once again with One of our top evaluators and all the land. Greg cosell of nfl films. Back here in richeisenshow. How're you doing. Greg rich great to be with you. Thank great to have you here all right. The the kids are all right. What do you think the kids. What do you got. you know. it's a good reference by the way i You know it's it's funny When when you do the evaluation of college quarterbacks pretty much everybody can see the traits the attributes. We all have a pretty good sense of of what those are and with all these young quarterbacks. There's there's not a lot of mystery to what they are. But when you get to the league then what it comes down to is executing the game plan executing the place and that's the way coaches think they call plays. They put together a game plan and they weren't all that executed so while we all can love traits when all said and done you they want plays executed. And it's hard to get a great feel for that when a quarterback doesn't throw a lot of balls doesn't get a chance to work through a game but you see glimpses but you also see some glimpses of things that you say that's going to have to be better and by the way. There's nothing wrong with saying that. I know a lot of people. Think when you say something like that it means you don't like the quarterback but i guarantee that that's the way they're being coached okay so No hall of fame yet for these guys probably not. Although i decided to wear a goal jacket to do to talk to you there we go all right so What do you make the justin fields. Play where he was Had his helmet knocked off. When you look at the all twenty two was at something he should have seen common. Linemen screwed it up. I mean What what are you. What do you just that play in particular in the rest of the evaluation of fields from this past weekend so far. Well let's look at it overall Because i think the first weekend. And i thought he played well the first weekend. Then what really struck me was. He looked very poised. He looks very comfortable I thought this weekend he played a little faster. You know. it's always easy when you're watching a quarterback if there's people around him say that the offensive line is bad and granted. The bears do not have a great offensive line. And he's playing with backups for the most part But i think that one of the things you have to learn in this league as a quarterback even if you have really good legs and can make plays with your legs. Is you have to get an innate. Feel what pressure is and what pressure isn't just because there are people around you in the. Nfl does not mean that there's pressure and when you're very athletic and field is a big kid. He's a big athlete with outstanding movement ability. And so i'm sure the hope is is that he can utilize ability to move as he grows into the position. And that you never know if that's totally going to happen or not. But in this league you have to be able to finish your progressions as a quarterback and pressure is a very relative term And a lot of people see bodies around a quarterback rich and they just automatically assume that's pressure that's not necessarily the case so How would you evaluate him with A date with the rams coming up in less than three sundays from now. Now greg cosell first of all we don't based on what's been said. It's it doesn't appear. He'll be the starting quarterback but we don't know the answer to that but My he's very talented kid in terms of his ability to move in terms of visibility to throw. Then what has to happen is he has to develop in gr- has to better developed details. The nuances of the position so that he can play from the pocket with some kind of consistency and execute the game plan and the play calls. And by the way everything. I'm telling you rich is totally expected. If you would talk to any coach. I'm talking about a coach in the league. They would tell you this this off. Quarterbacks tape take time to develop and what. They're trying to do through these. Preseason games is to give quarterbacks and opportunity to be successful with play calls like he did touch down two weeks ago and then he hit the big play this week Both of those were schemed. Vertical routes they were specific. Play calls that they pretty much knew would present a one read. Throw down the field. And you're trying to get your quarterback to be successful with those kinds of things so we can feel comfortable playing from the pocket. Greg cosell here On the rich eisen show. What have you seen from Out of trae lance so far yet trae. Lance has been a really interesting to watch. He's another guy that's got a lot of physical tools. He's very very talented. His first game he was all over the place. He was a little frenetic He threw the ball to heart. He's still having a tendency at times. Throw the ball with a little too much velocity when a little taste and touch is required I thought it's twenty last night. I thought and i watched the tape this morning. I thought kyle shanahan understood after his first two possessions last night that he was just a little chaotic because the sack that ended his second series was on him. he had sherefield wide open on crosser but didn't turn it loose and that was a perfect example of what pressure is and what pressure isn't people probably saw body around him to his frontside and thought that's pressure he needed to make that throw throw had to be made so of hand started the third possession good looking to get him comfortable and outside screen a slant flat concept basic concepts that that are real easy to execute and then he sort of settled into the game a little bit..

"Did he not I forget the he he won games for those who believe it's just the quarterback that wins games in the internet, but the Bengals won games with Andy Dalton at quarterback. So I was a little disappointed overall. So I don't know where he stands in his career right now. Yeah, interesting. So let's go into some of the draft guys right now and we won't really touch on Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson who I heard you on Ross Tucker podcast, you're you know, weekly appearances our appointment and listening for me and age, you know, you're very high on those two guys. I'm I'm more Curious will get into some of the depth in this quarterback class and somebody who I trust is told me that the Patriots like the depth in this class and I love to see who who might pop for you there. But you know Mac Jones at Alabama, obviously the Nick Saban connection right has a lot of people curious. What do you think of that? I think Mac Jones is you have to answer this question. Change to determine what your view is of Mac Jones. Okay, and I think different people and I've talked to some not with the Patriots obviously just you know coaches people along those lines, You have to answer this question. Do you view movement ability second reaction ability as a required trade now to play quarterback in the league. Let's put Tom Brady side greatest of all-time. Okay, let's put unless you believe Mac Jones is Tom Brady and I don't say that in a in a sarcastic manner unless you believe he's going to be that guy. If a you don't believe he's that level of player then your view about mobility and secondary action improvisation will Factor greatly into your world view of macja because he's not a good athlete. He's not big and he does not have second reaction ability. And he's not a big armed guy. Now he can make all the throws in the context of specific offenses. But he's not a big arm guy. So you have to decide how important second reaction ability is to you. I've had many coaches tell me now that it they view it as critical jobs. I had a GM who you and I both respect tremendously say that you'd like to have it but he doesn't view it as as essential. So it comes down to what your worldview of that is dead. I've athlete because I'm old I'm old school great cuz I'm old so I vacillate you know, but if you believe second reaction ability is critical and you have to have it towed then Mac Jones is not a first-round.

Thanks for joining us. I really appreciate it Greg. It's my pleasure to put a while my friend. It has been a while back, but I wanted to get you in on this and you're actually the first outside guess that I've had on my podcasts and you know, obviously the Patriots are at a weird time in the Their existence at least since Bill Belichick has been there with with Tom Brady gone and what they went through last year with Cam Newton. So they are obviously looking for their next quarterback and and that could go wrong in a variety of different ways. And I wanted to have you on just to get sort of your opinion what you've seen how you think things fit with the Patriots in terms of guys that are available right now veterans and also some of the Practical quarterback so but first I want to start with let's go back to this past season. I don't know how much you watch the Patriots considering they fell off a map there about this way of it took. Okay. So I just wanted to get your general impressions of the Patriots offense first year without Tom Brady Cam Newton in there. Just what did you see? What did you think of cams faith? And and why did you think things didn't go great for the Patriots offense last year, you know the best way I can answer that is just with what the film showed because I don't know Greg is you know the game Ovation, you know, I'm certainly not there. I don't know what's in Bill Belichick's head, but they played as if they did not want the passing game to be a big factor in their offense. Now, I'm not going to sit here and say that's Cam Newton. Like I said, I don't know the reasoning behind it. But we know in a league in which the passing game is clearly more predominant with the exception of maybe two or three teenage more predominant that the running game and clearly more so that the Patriots were not one of those teams..

But we know in a league in which the passing game is clearly more predominant with the exception of maybe two or three teenage more predominant that the running game and clearly more so that the Patriots were not one of those teams. They were numerous games that I watched on tape where I felt watching the tape that they don't really want to throw the ball very much. So again, I can't speak to the reason why but we know in today's NFL it's hard to win a thousand up a lot of points playing that way. In in no question, I one thing I wanted to know I certainly have my opinion from watching them over the years and no one expected Cam Newton to come in and be Tom Brady at the line of scrimmage before the snap. But God, how did it appear to you that the Patriots were limited and what they did as far as checks audibles things like that that we would have seen them do in the past. I would say that's fair. You know, it's always hard to know so many people's you know on Twitter social media think they know what a quarterbacks doing at the line of scrimmage. I'm not that smart Greg. I do not know what the quarterbacks doing at the line of scrimmage just because I hear him yell out a few words. So, you know it appeared to be the case that they did less at the line of scrimmage cuz certainly one of the things that God has made Tom Brady great and there's obviously many things but one of the things that I always thought made him great was he won a large percentage of the Downs before the ball was snapped off. I never got the sense that that was Cam Newton's game even in Carolina, which doesn't mean he never did that. Of course every Quarterback does That to some degree but I thought that that was one of the the key components of Tom Brady's game. So my sense is they did not do quite as much of that this year. But then again, I don't think their offense had as many elements to age. Which goes back to my initial point I can't speak to why that was the case, but it didn't strike me that it has as many elements to it. When cam did throw the ball or when he went back to past? How long do you think he did as a whole on the season as far as you know, making the right read and also, you know, just the way he threw the ball. I think he was pretty much the cam that he's always been I think he's always been a little bit erratic. I think he's streaky. I think he'll miss throws that are relatively routine that he should make an make some throws and you go. Wow that guy can really throw it. I think that's the way he's been much of his career. He's always had some scattershot Tendencies and he'll miss some so I think that he was really no different this year than he has been in previous years. He obviously through the ball less than he had in previous years with the exception of a couple of games. It was not an offense. Other than the Running part of it, it was not really an offensive built around him throwing the football. Yeah,

The History Of Kayfabe

"Earned. Modern professional wrestling began back in the early twentieth century. When carnivals would put on catch wrestling exhibitions this was real wrestling. The competitors were actually wrestling with each other and there would be prize money to the winner. The wrestlers would often competing against locals. Who would win a prize. If they could defeat the carnival strongman so they really did have to know how to wrestle and fight. Unfortunately many of the competitive matches were really boring the bouts rough and nothing more than wrestling holds. Which could last for over an hour watching grown men grab each other for. That long really wasn't that entertaining. The whole point of carnival wrestling wasn't terrestrial it was to make money. Eventually the promoters figure out they could sell more tickets if they made the matches more interesting and that is how started the word k. Fame but self comes from kearney. Talk which is a pig. Latin type of language which was spoken by carnival workers k. Fehb just means fake. As the carnivals began predetermining the winners of fights it was a shortstop to adopting the tropes which were used in all good dramas good versus evil heroic comebacks treachery and betrayal. All of those became part of professional wrestling in order to put on a better show and sell tickets. However at no point did they ever say that the performance was predetermined people had to think they were watching illegitimate competition. So a bad guy and a good guy couldn't be seen together before or after a show the head to commit to their characters all the time. This is the primary difference that separates k. fehb from acting actors perform role and. Everyone knows that they're watching performance in k. Fehb the performer is living the role even when they're not performing and they're trying to convince the audience that israel for decades keeping cafe was the single biggest rule in professional wrestling. It was the wrestling equivalent to magicians not. Divulging the secrets. The primary care mechanism was having baby faces which were the good guys in heels which were the bad guys. The bad guys had to be bad guys all the time. If they were asked for autographs by fans at an airport they would often refuse to sign an insult. The fans just to keep k fehb when wrestlers travelled between cities heels and faces would often have to travel in separate cars and stay in different rooms. Just to keep k fehb. They would even have different locker rooms backstage. Occasionally they would screw up. Wrestlers would get in big trouble if they broke k. Fehb in one thousand nine hundred eighty seven. The iron sheik. Who was a heel was traveling with. Hacksaw jim duggan. Who has a face. They were both pulled over and arrested for possession of marijuana and cocaine when the arrests made the news to cause controversy. Because these two guys were supposed to be enemies yet. They were traveling with each other on rare occasions. A wrestler may go off script and try to really injure another performer. Any sort of predetermined match or storyline is called a work in wrestling circles. And something which is real or off script is called a shoot in two thousand and four for example. The wwe was running a reality show where the contestants compete to become professional wrestlers. One of the contestants was daniel putter. Who is a real life. Mma fighter on an episode of monday night raw wrestler. Kurt angle issued a challenge for one of the contestants to come out and fight him. According to the script putter was supposed to come out and quickly lose however he decided to actually fight for real on live. Tv when angle wasn't expecting it. Putter tried to put england submission hold instead of losing however kurt angle is a real life olympic gold medalist in amateur wrestling and would have none of it. Technically fehb died in professional wrestling in nineteen eighty nine. When vince mcmahon the owner of the then. Wwf testified before the new jersey state legislature that wrestling was scripted in the matches predetermined this was done in order to avoid being taxed and regulated. Like a real sport today in professional wrestling cave is pretty much dead the. Wwe hosts our own documentaries where wrestlers talked out of character and will often break cafe within their own shows however as cafe has died in professional wrestling it seemingly has taken off in other parts of our culture one of the best examples would be mohammed ali yes that mohammed ali to be sure. All of his boxing matches were real and he was one of the greatest boxers in history however the persona. he created of the arrogant loud rhyming. Fighter was total k. fehb he recalled in a nineteen sixty nine associated press interview about a chance encounter with professional wrestler gorgeous george in nineteen sixty one in las vegas. He said quote. I got it from seeing gorgeous. George russell in las vegas. I saw his aides spraying deodorant and opponents corner to contain the smell. I also saw thirteen thousand full seats. I talked with gorgeous for about five minutes after the match and started being a big mouth and a brighter. He told me people would come to see me. Get beat others would come to see me. When i'd get coming and going and quote alley began creating poems about how pretty was and how ugly. His opponents were his interviews with sportscasters. Like howard cosell. Legendary gorgeous georgia's prediction was absolutely true. Love him or hate him. You couldn't ignore. mohammed. Ali

Remembering when Howard Cosell announced he death of John Lennon

"Time out, is called three seconds remaining. John Smith is on the line and I don't care what's on the line. Howard, you have got to say way. No in the booth. Yes, we have to say it. Remember, this is just a football game. No matter who wins or loses and unspeakable tragedy confirmed to us by ABC News in New York City. John Lennon, outside of his apartment building on the west side of New York City. The most famous perhaps of all of the Penis, shot twice in the back, rushed the Roosevelt Hospital dead on arrival. Hard to go back to the game. After that news flash, which in duty bound we have to take Right I need it is remember remember watching watching that that money money night game because I'm the oldest of 45 in here. I remember that when Howard Cosell reported that Mark David Chapman had murdered John Lennon in front of his apartment in New York. And wow, There was no social media back then. But the outpouring of great people were devastated. Devastated. Remember Princess Diana? Member seeing people lined up on Michigan Avenue. They were having some type of a memorial to her in Chicago because she had been here over at Northwestern and this one, and when Elvis that, like those three stick out in my mind, remembering those being announced Am I? Harry Carey, talking about the death of Elvis and crying. Harry and Elvis were tight. And you had John Lennon and this one. It was unbelievable. I know for those who have never heard that clip. They say. You know, Howard Cosell just can't kind is barreling in with the news. You gotta understand that Howard had no finesse. Like that voice and the the cadence. That's who he was. You would think you know, Living more somber, You know, eh, Frank? We've got some sad news, but he did the way he did it. You know if you hear the way he did, as on arrived, yes, that he comes barreling in with the news. But that's who Howard Woz, and so it actually is more jolting when he gives the news. And you know, Howard puts it in perspective, though. I gotta give him credit. He says just a football game. But I got you this news, Frank back to you. And I know you know what Franklin for does after that, That's gonna be tough hearing that news because of just how How much the Beatles and how much John Lennon meant in that era. No question. Do you know it's crazy, but that's so hard. He brings up the game right, so there were three seconds left in the game at that point. It was Patriots Dolphins. The scheme was tied at 13, and they sent in Patriots kicker John Smith Toe win the game. This is Howard Cosell makes the announcement three seconds left. Here comes the kicker Patriots kicker John Smith to kick the game winning field goal and it was blocked. That game went into overtime in the Dolphins won it But like there's a story on ESPN dot com today that the kicker John Smith will forever be linked to this because it's like right after Howard Cosell, who's one of the most you know, notorious broadcasters of all time, announces such an event. Then millions of people watching are glued to their seats, sees this poor man have to go in there. He probably doesn't even know what's going on. But he's gets his field goal blocked, and now he's forever linked to it. Yeah, I remember watching that money and I found ball. Thank you. Monday night football. Woz, eh? It was a thing, man. It was a happening like we didn't have Game on month. Two games on Monday. Oh, Tuesday, we're gonna play. Oh, we gotta shut this. We're gonna play it on Wednesday and we got Thursday night football. We got 40,000 didn't have all that There wasn't even son in a football. No, it was Sunday afternoon. You had a late game. That would sometimes get you know you served by Heidi, right? Um, correct, but But when you didn't have that going on, it was it was money Money. Knight was the only night game going on. During that time. Money? No, it was the only time I can get that all the highlights of the week also is why Berman does it kind of been a traditional manner on my football today. You've seen the highlights a million times, but it just Berman in there. Give that gravitas of what? It was back in the day. So yes. Oh, my night football had such a such an enormous event. It was it was that for and also money that baseball for me as well, Because it is part of the brand going night football. Think of money. I'd baseball. The Tigers are playing with the lights. That's interesting. Yeah, Esso. It Z one of those things cap where When you have that kind of news now, keep in mind. They didn't break into the game, ABC News or anything else like that? It was announced right there at the game, Correct. It was strong, right? It wasn't We have to break away because we've got major news. Here's you know. What's that? Peter Jennings? No, no, no, no, no, Howard. And you know, in his ear there like you got to announce this and you've got to do it right now. Because I think it was the right decision. I mean, that was a massive massive name.

I mean, that's a tough game to gamble on. I'm not gonna lie video in three verses only three. I mean, with two coaches that might be on their way out. I mean, what is it again? It's the Broncos in the Jets. Good luck Tried. I'll give the NFL network credit They tried. They put a promo together to this is going to be the game. Everybody get ready Week four starts. Much that once like I told you yesterday that I think I'm taking the position. Anti Giants anti jets so over they play. I'm going to take the other team as you move forward. I don't know if I can trust Denver them. I don't trust either of them. I mean, it's not like it's a game with really fantasy implications without Courtland Sutton, who are there, even big time fans. Here's the other Who's the running back? That was there. Lindsay Lindsay is hurt, too. I mean, she's this's a live beyond bel. I mean, that's what you have. And is there one receiver Jamison Crowder. Maybe that's on on somebody's active roster. Catch some balls in that offense. He was actually quietly a pretty productive fantasy player last year. I don't know. Good luck to you, man. I can't. I can't muster up the effort for this Thursday night. Luckily, there's baseball gambling, though gambling will always peak. Someone's interest will be an MBA finals that night. Uh, what's the final schedule? It's a good question. Is there Finals game Thursday, Wednesday, Friday Wednesday Friday Gotta congratulate Tampa Bay. That game. Still probably gonna be baseball. Sadly. If that Thursday night game, it'll probably still beat the baseball talk about playing baseball against the Thursday night game between two teams that are only Falcon Sender tour squads with 30 guys and each team down. And the next 30 guys on each team playing, and it would still be baseball. No, it'll beat everything course. Thursday night game will be anything the n B A. Or the but even this one. Even probably. Well, I said that yesterday. You watch. It's gonna go when I was talking to somebody in the industry yesterday called me And he said, Do you realize He's a baseball guy, he said. Do you realize that if you took the Cubs and socks rating for the game on Sunday Together, they game on NBC Sports car come up, short of added them together and then multiplied them by for you fault. No, you fall short of the Bears. Bears are like a 30 for you. If you what If you just add in a golf scene, Would Steve Cash would have put it over the gym? Blaney with him? That's over over the top. That's what I'm thinking. A golf scene a little casual out there. I think that that helps this's like Benedetti's version of ratings math. You're telling me if you Adam together, multiply. It still doesn't beat the Bears. All you believe, multiplied by four. Yeah, You believe that? I don't know. I I probably would've guessed if you multiply it by four Bears games or pulling well north of 30 NFL Man. Those are moon landing ratings. That's a moon. That's right Hood, this huge TV and by the way, No more betting for Baltimore in a big game. That's enough of that, like Lamar, like, but this is part of the company, right? We've just got a bit of hype up. Mahomes versus Jackson like it's some rivalry. I saw that this morning on the Keyshawn and Jay will Zubin. Trying to hype up like this is Brady and Manning. It's not one guy can't beat the other three. No against them. So you so until until Lamar Jackson's winning big games on a regular basis against someone the caliber of the homes were not just that we're not dead in the Ravens. Martin doesn't Lamar Jackson have like what does he have one loss against the entire league in the regular season, other than Chief the Chiefs or two losses or something like that. It's got like two regular season law away against everybody else in his own three against incredible. Mama Holmes. By the way, says Louis, Riddick, stop calling impact. It's not his name one who calls him that. Who else calls him Pat? No milk because her ex husband is Patrick. He's Patrick. So did you see the kids spoke today? Is it ealier or a layer? Because I asked the player? Yes, I'm saying it's some way. Patrick Mahomes verified his situation. Or you remember Leroy Butler was Leroy Butler became Laroy Butler. I can't be. It became LeRoi. We're getting the money. Yeah, it was Leroy when he's broken. When he's signed, a new contract in the Lambo Leave suddenly became right. The Dallas Cowboys and their internal battle for an offensive identity

"You're if you bet football if your fantasy football all I just love football and what kind of meat sandwich the little. Bits and pieces of film study of Greg Cosell forty years. NFL films somebody. I rely on for the draft after I rely on for a lot of my insight and Greg Cosell is joining us. Greg how were you pre-thanksgiving. How are you doing great? Hope you have a great Thanksgiving tomorrow. Thank Hugh very much. So we watched Dallas in New England. One of my questions with Dallas all year has been. What is their offense of identity? When you watch film what what do you think? They think they're offensive identity. Is I think they're struggling right now. To determining whether their offense still runs through through Ezekiel Elliott or whether they believe that they can transition into a little bit more of a passing team. Given the fact that they're three receivers are among the top two-three receiving trios in the NFL The other issue. I think they're struggling with that. Plays into this is the fact that for the most part over the last three or four weeks. They've not run on the ball as efficiently as they had earlier in the season. So I think they're. They're struggling with exactly what their identity is. They had a really difficult time with New England when you play new England Colin. You have to be able to defeat man coverage you can do that with scheme or you can do that by finding your best individual matchups. They really couldn't do either. Or and Prescott had a bad game in a game like that you don't get a lot of throws and when you do get those throws you have to make them and he missed them and I and therefore they really struggled to move the

I'm also happy every single week in which I talked to the goat Greg Cosell because not only do we get his thoughts on. Top prospects. We got into some very very cool stuff about the evolution of the game sub packages linebacker evolution before we ranked the Devon's Bush, white and more. It is today's big show. Greg. This is crazy at this point the drafts two weeks away. We got linebackers today. We've got next week. We'll get into the defensive backs both safeties and corners. It's interesting, Greg. We probably didn't do this right because we did d line last week. And we did both edge guys and interior guys. Next week. We're doing both safeties and corners. And I think are we to the point Greg where you could almost argue that all four of those other positions edge guys. Detectives safeties corners all four of those even though we're only breaking them up into three different groups all four those are more important these days than off the ball linebackers..

"Just like the big show with Greg Cosell happens every single week. RI Craig are positional series previewing the twenty nineteen draft rolls on and it rolls on to the wide receiver position. So we've already over the last few weeks done the top four quarterbacks. Then we've done what we call the tier two quarterbacks. Now, we'll get into the guys that they throw the ball to the receivers. And I guess after what he did at the combine Greg I need to start with decay Metcalf. Very curious to hear what you saw from him. When you're watching the videotape because by the way, just a reminder Greg's going to go by what he saw on the ole miss coaching tape. Not by what the guy looks like or what did the combine? Well, he does he does look like you. And I rose I noticed that immediately, right. No, not quite not quite. Okay. Well, you know, McKesson interesting guy because he's he's a big physically explosive athlete. He ran by people in the SEC. He ran by off coverage corners in the SEC. So there's no question that he's got great speed. He's a straight line player at this point in his career, though. He's what we call very linear. He's not necessarily a refined route runner, he's not the kind of guy that's going to come in and out of break smoothly cleanly. Just yet at this point. He he he rounds off his routes. And that's okay. You know depends on the the pass game concept. You can go back to the greatest show on turf. And those guys, you know, they rounded off their route that was the nature of the past game. They didn't sink their hips, and you know, and and run routes that way. So there are. Fences in which you can do that. But there's no question that he's he's fast. He defeated press coverage when people press them with his size with his strength. So he got cleanly off the line. You know, there's not many receivers with his height weight speed profile that will probably get him drafted high. You know when you watch him. Do you think is Julio Jones? I don't think he's quite that guy. But you think of the Mike Evans of the world, you'd think of the Josh Gordon to the world if for people who remember this wasn't that long ago, you'd think of the Vincent Jackson's, you know, you think of that kind of guy big receivers who can run so mccafe's a fascinating guy. Now a lot of people before we move on. We'll look at some of the other tests like the twenty yard shuttle the three cone he did very poorly in those tests. Right. And it just sounds like hearing you talk, Greg. That's just not the type of receiver. He is. He's not that kind of guy. I know you said Vincent Jackson. Mike evans. Not quite on Morton. Yeah. Josh what about what about like a te'o? I mean, I guess when I see his yet. I kinda thought to oh, you know. And that's an interesting comparison because one could argue that Teo was a little stiff too. I mean, he was obviously big and explosive, but he was a little straight line not a bit comparison. You know, I think Metcalf look I spoke to a number of people as well who thought that he could be your classic boomer bust player. There's no question that he has the size and the traits to be the factor at all three levels of the defense. Whether that happens that remains to be seen. But he certainly has the traits to be. That guy. What about his teammate gray while we're talking ole miss receivers? That's just go right to AJ Brown. His team majors also ranked pretty high. Yeah. I found AJ Brown to be an interesting guy. I watch an awful lot of them. Because I watched him in two thousand seventeen I watched him in two thousand eighteen he you know, he's not really like a Julio Jones. I mean, he's not quite that guy. But there's a savvy and refinement to his game as a route runner that I think will transition..

"This is what I live for breaking down four games that we all get to watch at the exact same time. He's the civilian goat. He's Greg Cosell. And it's the big show. Greg no time to mess around. It is wild card weekend. All I wanna do is go in depth on all four of these match ups. I can't wait. Let's start. We'll just go in order. Let's start with the Texans and the colts who obviously have already played each other twice. What did you see in those games earlier in the season? You do we want to do a deep dive here Ross and not just talk about the obvious. Yes. Yes. All right. Let's do it. I'll give you a couple of thoughts. First of all in those two games to show in Watson was sacked twelve times. And the colts actually who are not a high percentage. Blitz defense, by NFL standards. Did a really good job blitzing and creating pressure from different looks looks in which Watson would not expect. They blitz. To come. Because very often a quarterback has blitz alerts based on a defensive alignment the colts did a really good job particularly with their slot corner. Kenny more of creating blitzes where it did not appear that more would be part of the pressure scheme. And now, I think that's something to look for because Watson is still at the stage in his career where he doesn't necessarily recognize pressure as well as he should. So that's one area to look for the other thing on the other side of the ball. I think an important player, and maybe a player that doesn't get a lot of snaps. But I think he's really important to the colts in their passing game is back in the hime Hines. They've started to really use him. Both offset in the backfield both detached from the formation and he's a matchup weapon, particularly against man coverage. So we'll see how much man the Texans. Choose to play. They're not a high percentage, man. Defense. But we'll see but Heim is a really interesting player to me, and it has become one as the season has progressed. You know, what's interesting to me, Greg about what you just said there about the colts blitzing and defense is number one. They're defensive coordinator Matt ever flus is being mentioned as a potential head coach in places. So he's done a curriculum on by the way, because I don't think anyone were to look at that defense Ross and say that's high level talent..

"It comes down to the conversation about balance can you run this offense? Can you truly have an offense with a quarterback who runs as much as he does my answer to that would be no? But I think that doesn't matter right now you're playing this out for this season. They want to win the Super Bowl. I don't think he can do this over the course of a long career. He's going to have to become a better passer. So my buddy Greg Cosell in his office NFL films, executive producer of the NFL matchup show. Greg can you confirm that your office is still not in a basement? No, it's not actually a decent size screen heroes. Which is nice. Fritzy, fritzy in his head said, well, Greg Gregson watching film in his basement NFL films for forty years fits fritzy was convinced that you can only watch film in a basement. No, no, it's real office. It's actually not as big as maybe some people might think it's actually pretty small. But you know, what I need? You know, I'm I'm a simple, man. So let's get into the eagles in the bears. I gotta tell you, Greg. I've been skeptical of Trubisky all year the last couple of games a lot of the throws. He's made some of the third down conversions. Yeah. Start. He's starting to win me over Greg. Well, that's critical for you. Just sit on what's critical third down. Now. There are fence is is we obviously it's a very interesting mix of Matt Nagy trying to do a lot of a lot of things, you know, cool schemes and different concepts. But then it's also a mix of very simple basic concepts to help Trubisky at this point his development. One thing that really stands out on film. When you watch them is how well and consistently. They work to the boundary to the short side of the field. Because that defines the reeds very often it's just two men route concepts and combinations to the boundary and to Rico, and is almost always one of those boundary receivers. And he's a very difficult matchup is so fun to watch. I'm gonna miss their and sproles whenever he retires. I think to Rico and. Greg might be my new Darren sproles. Well, yeah, he's very similar. It's interesting. Both guys are playing in this game. And you're going to see similar concepts from both teams in the past game both players line up to the boundary and both players caused problems for man coverage because a lot of the way the NFL has evolved. In terms of coverage is even if you're playing a zone concept. Most teams will man up to the short side of the field and both to Rico and Darren sproles cause problems in the past game. Whether they're offset in the backfield or whether they're detached from the formation, right? So Greg we've got a poll question. And I'm just curious the poll question is the team playing this weekend that we think has the least chance to go on a run? But you're not gonna really ask me that I'll give you the opposite, Greg. I'll give you the opposite. Who's playing this weekend that based on your videotape study throughout the year, which which of these teams you think is best prepared to kind of make a run here over. These next two or three games. Well, I'm really bad at this guy. I'm going to give you an answer. But I'm really bad at this. Because I can give you five reasons, you know, even you know that right? From watching tape, particularly when teams have definable strengths and weaknesses. I'm never surprised when a weakness or a floor shows up in a in a playoff game. But the team that I'm most fascinated with as we head to the play offs are the Indianapolis Colts. Wow. That is really not sitting here telling you they're going to the Super Bowl. But I I think I already put it on Twitter, Greg Cote. Okay. But I think that they're decode Nate or Matt Hebron flus has done an outstanding job with what most people would say is not high level talent with his schemes as concepts a ton of what we call gap exchange on the defensive line. You know, all about that. And how difficult that can be offensive lineman to deal with. And and I think he's really done a good job. Now, they could stop at some point just because of the talent. But I I really like the colts, Greg I really liked get a chance to talk with..

I did though wanna I get your thoughts from what ended up being very entertaining game in the end. And really just what you thought of how both teams played. Well, it was kind of a tough watch for awhile era, as you know Ross. You know, the eagles we've talked about their offensive struggles to the last number of weeks. They've day for the most part struggled all year. Beqaa boys are very up and down pensively. They're a team that's built on running the football with. I mean, they have a distinct profile they run the ball. They played good defense. And they want that Prescott to make enough plays. And obviously not turn the ball over. They had the ball in that game. They ran over ninety plays which I note overtime was that game. But that's an awful lot of play. So therefore Prescott threw the ball more. You know, I think as they go forward if they're looking to be an obviously they are looking to be a championship title type contender Bill. Need Dak Prescott to be more consistent player. He made some really good throws in that game. He also missed a number of throws. And he's going to need to developing continue to develop as he matures a little a little better feel in the pocket. He doesn't have great pocket presence. You know, I'm glad you said that great. It's interesting because I think there's a bunch of guys out there that you hear the fans say, you know, he just needs to be more consistent. It's funny though. Like when I think appro football and the NFL, and I think the of the.

Cowboys vs Saints: Previewing the Saints defense

"Gregg love and we have a good Thursday night matchup to break down. And that's absolutely the case tonight. Let's start saints Cowboys. What do you think about these teams? Obviously you watched them last week on thanksgiving. What's interesting to you about these teams in this match him? Well, I think what's interesting to me is is sort of a macro view of this game. Roth because now we're in an era in which people believed that the only way you can win in the league. And I guess what a Super Bowl is what a high powered offense that puts up a lot of points that the aerobically has the ability to put up forty any given week with the saints. We know can do that to Cowboys would not fit into that category. They're built old school. It's a run game coun- Dacian with a high level foundation back. It's an execution run game without much misdirection. And deception as we see with a lot of teams in the league. And it's a pretty basic pass game that by NFL standard. Would probably be considered somewhat remedial elementary. So to me, this sort of interesting point and not at this one game will decide one way or the other. But it's sort of interesting to me to think about it in a larger world view as to whether the Cowboys are theoretically built structurally to win a Super Bowl that kind of team. What do you think? I think they would their defense would have to be really really good. I think because I don't believe that offensively. They would be able to generate enough points. Now that again, if you defense is really really good, and you can win games twenty three twenty maybe twenty seven Twenty-three, then guess, but they're not built to get into a shootout. If that's what you believe is required to win meaningful playoff games and Super Bowls right now. I can't wait for the matchup. I I love watching the Cowboys defense right now. And I'm with you, Greg. The Cowboys might not be created. But it feels like what they're doing right now. It's kind of working. Well, yeah. I mean, people when singing mind they're also six and five we're not talking about a team. That's you know, nine and two. So they're they clearly have a distinct profile we talked about it. And that's the way they have to play. I mean, look it always helps your past game when you can throw six yard passes or fifteen yard passes that become long gains every team loves that. Because those are not high risk throws. Although I will say that I thought that the ninety are touchdown to Cooper was Prescott. Who was clearly Prescott. Best throw of the game versus the Redskins and one of his best of the season. Because I thought that he did such a good job with progression reading and then making a tight window throw. So I thought that was actually one of his best throws of the season. And how about Greg drew Brees throwing touchdown passes to four undrafted free agents that a lot of people have never even heard of. Yeah. That that's true. You know, breezes just a joy to watch for someone like myself because now again, we reached an era to where people talk about quarterbacks that have to be able to run around. And and I'm not going to sit here and tell you that that's not a good trait to have that time, but to watch a quarterback play at the level that he plays from the pocket with his understanding of what he's seeing before the snap. The ability to move and manipulate defenses after the snap and the accuracy with with Keith rose throw after throw is remarkable. But I think another thing that is kinda lost with the saints because

It says something like up to hear Ross's stories to read Ross. Stories that is where you want to go. And I want to go to the big show, big show. Every week we get a chance to talk to the greatest civilian video watcher of all time because he's been NFL matchup since I was like born. I'm sorry. NFL films since I was born and just seemingly the executive producer and now on air talent of the NFL matchup show forever that by the way, if you're not DVR airing it, you're just doing it wrong. Craig, a lot to talk about, obviously we got a big game tonight between the Bengals and the ravens, both of whom had double digit wins in week one. But I, I wanna start with a week ago and the falcons and the eagles. And obviously, you know, the penalties was not real fun, but net. What? What were some of the things that really stood out to you or interested you from that game? Oh, well. That's a pretty broad based question. You know, that was a game that was. It was a tough game to watch just because it was it was sloppy football, which I guess we should expect for week one. I think the eagles defence to me continues to stand out. They do some things that are pretty intriguing on the defensive side of the ball. As far as their coverage concepts, we all know they have a good defensive line. We know Fletcher Cox, a great player. We know that Cox can line up in numerous spots at the detector position and physically dominate guards and and centers. But you know, to go into the weeds just a little bit raw. They do something where the coverage that I think is in the cover three family. But what they do with it is really, really interesting keeping the single high safety really low almost like he's a robber and their corners playing with some cushion, but hard to the inside. It's a really interesting concept for teams that liked to throw the ball inside which the falcons do and actually their opponent this week, the bucks do. So it's just a coverage that I notice. To last year that they started using and they used it quite a bit against the falcons. And I think you'll continue to see it based on the opponent for people that don't know what a robber is, Greg. Can you explain that? Well, that's where you take a player and and you sort of sit him right in the middle of the field. You can do it at different depths depending on what Petit killer defense playing the eagle's actually use the so-called deep safety as a robber normally, teams do not use a robber who's who's the aerobically the deepest defender in the middle of the field, like teams like the patriots play a coverage that we call man, we call one robber and they take a safety and he is the robber who kind of sits maybe ten twelve yards from the line of

You can still get a chance to win the free shave butter and wait till you guys hear about what we're giving away next week. It's the Thursday though, which means it's Greg Cosell. It's breaking down the games. It's awesome. It's big show. All right, Gregg. It is finally here real football, regular season. Football will have you every week here on Thursdays breaking down, not only the Thursday night football game, but the biggest games of the weekend because you're already doing that in prepping for that for the unbelievable show. You have the NFL matchup show on ESPN and of course the great work you do for NFL films as well. Let's start with the Thursday night or Greg eagles falcons. What are you most intrigued about in this matchup. Oh, that I'm actually intrigued with how the falcons choose to play offense with their personnel. For this reason, Nigel Brad will not play in this game, and it would seem to me that the falcons would wanna stay with base personnel quite a bit which they do. They do often play with two tight. They do play with a fullback, but I think they would want the eagles linebackers assuming the eagles play with three linebackers. They may decide to go big nickel and play Graham, the safety almost as a linebacker or Jenkins can do that as well. But I think you wanna put the eagles in that situation Ross and then line up with a lot of base personnel. Obviously, they won't do that on third nine, but I think you wanna see how the eagles are going to handle that with nine zero, Brad out of the game because the only real starting linebacker they will have out there is Jordan Hicks, their middle linebacker, and he's coming off. I believe in Killys injury. Yeah, I was gonna ask you out of the guys other than once al-shabaab Jeffrey and TIMMY Jernigan as well as Nigel, Brad, which guy hurts him the most. And it sounds like you you think it might be Brad them? I think it could be yes. The other intriguing element to this game is just what you mentioned with the eagles missing Jeffrey and MAC Hollins who will be out as well. I think that you'll see a lot of two tight end sets, and I think the rookie Dallas guttered we'll get significant snaps in this game. So that's the on that side of the ball. That's the the other element that intrigues me in this game. Totally agree. You know, Greg eagles fans are very nervous about Nick foles and the fact that he's not played well in the preseason. Do you have a read on that? I mean, he has had a history in his career of being up and down guy, a major history. There's a very wide variance in his play. I think he needs to be schemed. I think the eagles did such a good job with that and in the playoffs last year. And I think you'll see a lot of that. They'll be a major chess match. Going on here, don't forget. Teams of now had an off season all teams, but certainly the falcons have had an off season to figure out how better to defend run, pass option concepts. And I know the eagles are trying to expand those concepts as well. So I think that that's a critical dimension to this game.

Greg, it is hard to believe that this'll be our last time talking about the preseason games next week. We don't bother with the fourth preseason game next week. We will be previewing week one in the NFL including a very, very big opening-night matchup between the Atlanta Falcons and the Philadelphia Eagles. And maybe we should just start there. Greg, the eagles first team offense has not scored a point in the preseason. What have you seen from them and is there legitimate cause for concern in your mind? Well, I think Ross at the eagles particularly with foale's at quarterback and he will play, I'm sure week one. They're a highly schemed offense and they're not really scheming into preseason to face particular opponents. Now. Foles is the kind of quarterback in which there's a wide variance in his play. He's a streaky player. We know he can go on grade runs as he did a year ago, but he also when he's poor, he's very poor. He can be slow. He can be deliberate, his

So I guess before we dive in specific players, Greg, my question would be how much in general stock do you put in the preseason performance of specific players, especially the guys wind up talking the most about which is usually the young quarterbacks. The first game, not too much because I think it's more of a glorified scrimmage.
