"It was canceled in early 1943, just moving this would be mind boggling. So that's a little bullet point list of some of the things we're in the planning stages or in the conceptual stages. I want to take a look at some of the more out there conceptual and ambitious plans that Germany had before we drill into those that were implemented but failed on the battlefield. And the first one is called the sun gun or the Helio beam, and I'm excited about this one because it actually resembles something that Roman historians say the scientist Archimedes came up with. In around 200 BC, the Roman navy was invading Syracuse, where Archimedes, the Greek mathematician lives. And according to some accounts, he was able to take concentric mirrors and array them all together so that they developed into a solar beam and were strong enough to basically fry the Roman fleet. I have a podcast episode on this topic and short to say, people have tried to recreate this experiment. It wouldn't work. It's more of a testimony to the image that Archimedes had as a genius. Kind of like similarities with Nazi super science, that the reputation proceeds him, and it makes some people think that he's capable of impossible things. So anyway, this was completely conceptual. There's no way this would have been possible with 1940 technology with the Helio beam. It was a giant mirror that would conceivably launch into space by an advanced V two rocket. It was an auditable weapon, a research by Nazi Germany during World War II. German physicist Hermann oberth drew up plans for a space station, the station was to house a hundred meter wide concave mirror that could be used to reflect the sun's light into a point on earth like a magnifying glass. Later on, a group of German scientists at a research center further tweaked auber's original idea, the sun gun would be 8200 kilometers above earth while above low earth orbit. I don't think it's in geostationary orbit at that point. If you need a metallic sodium and have enough power to boil an ocean or fry a city. Now the Germans estimated how long this would take and they said 50 to a hundred years. So this is purely conceptual. Now, something more straightforward was called the krumlov, which was a weapon designed in response to the trench warfare of World War I, and something that could overcome the difficult conditions there. One difficulty was how do you shoot around a corner without potentially exposing yourself? A British born Australian soldier, Lance Corporal William beach came up with a solution to this in 1915 during the global campaign, he modified a standard Lee Enfield 300 rifle. The stock was cut in half, and then the two halves were connected with a board and a mere periscope. Beach horizontally aligned the sites of the rifles, use a string to pull the trigger, and allowed it to be fired from within cover, so you could fire around a corner. So the krumlauf, the Nazi weapon, krumlov means curved barrel, it was something that didn't work. But it was a bent barrel attachment. For an assault rifle that was developed by Germany and World War II. It included a periscope site for firing around corners. The problem with this is that the barrel and bullets were under great stress, bullets would shatter and they'd exit the barrel in multiple fragments. So as a buck shot, it could be effective, but not as a rifle. Another conceptual weapon was called the mouse. It was a heavy tank that was the heaviest fully enclosed fighting vehicle ever built. But only two holes in one turret were completed before Russia advance on Germany. Two prototypes were built, one with a turret and one without. They went through trials in 1944, the vehicle was ten meters long over 30 feet long, 3.71 meters high, about 14 or 15 meters wide. And nearly four meters high. It weighed about 200 metric tons, which is the weight of nearly 30 elephants. The biggest problem was moving the mouse. It was too heavy to cross bridges and break them, and it was actually fitted with a snorkel to cross rivers and cold, it gets emerged up to a death of 8 meters. The problem was finding an engine that was powerful enough to move the tank, but small enough to fit inside. All right, that was a brief overview. Now I want to dive in a lot deeper with weapons that were developed and pushed the envelope on technology, where there is a little bit of truth to the concept of the wunderwaffe..

"Yeah, I think what made the show was what you just described the technical parts. For me, I would have liked to have just seen her sing diamonds. That's enough. Well, you know, my favorite Super Bowl. Yeah. Because she couldn't just stand on the grass and sing. Right. It's the Super Bowl. I totally get that. That grass was something. What a mess for the players, even with all they did. It was still pretty messy. And looked dangerous. But that is so fascinating that they can do that. The technology behind that shows evidently just breathtaking. It's bob and sherry. Can you believe this is brought to you by State Farm? You read it once. I don't believe that. And then you're ready to go. I can't believe this. It's bob and cherries. I don't believe this. I believe this. With all of the mystery and weird craziness with these objects in the sky that the military's shooting down and trying to shoot down, it got me wondering about some things. And I fell down a little bit of a rabbit hole. And I don't want to criticize the people that put the curriculum together for the schools I attended as a child. But I feel like they left out some stuff that we all would have paid a lot more attention to. I'm talking these Civil War surveillance balloons. Spy balloons during the Civil War, did you even know such a thing existed? You know, in the depths of my studying, the Civil War, which I think we did at north haven high school for about two days, I remember something about it and I was so surprised. What do you know? Refreshment. It would have been, I mean, I think you would have had kids sitting up straight and paying more attention. So in the early and this goes all the way back, the French were the first to experiment with hydrogen balloons for battlefield recon. That was like back in 1790. The balloons didn't fly, they were tethered to the ground by cables, and two soldiers would get into the balloon basket. One would be operating a telescope, and the other would be signaling using flags to the military on the ground below. And those French balloons were the world's first air force, okay? Did not know about right, did not know about any of that. Now we come to the Civil War in America when it broke out an American inventor and kind of showboat guy named thaddeus Lowe went to the national mall in D.C. and put on this big fancy balloon demonstration, and it was so exciting that Abraham Lincoln was like, we need balloons in the Union Army. So the very biggest of all the union reconnaissance balloons was called the Intrepid. And it could carry 5 people and one of those people was a telegraph operator, so they would get up in that balloon, and they would look at what the confederate army was up to, and then they would use the telegraph to relay information back to headquarters. Wow, that's brilliant. Isn't it? Right. Isn't that amazing? Yeah. Then there was a meteorologist in Britain named Douglas Douglas Archibald. And this is in the 1880s, you guys. He ricked a camera to a kite. And he sent the kite up into the sky because he was studying like the wind speed and direction because he was a meteorologist. And this was before there was even TV meteorologists, right? His aerial photographs from that kite were the earliest aerial aerial photographs ever published. And it inspired an American army Corporal whose name was Corporal William eddy. So now it's 1898 and Corporal Eddie is fighting in the Spanish-American War. And he thought about that British meteorologist. So he got himself a kite, and he attached a camera to it, and he sent it up into the sky. And he took the very first military aerial surveillance photos in history. My two questions, let me ask my two questions. How did he get the camera back then to click? And the other one is, how did they send it probably sound really stupid with this? How did the telegraph operator send the message from balloon? The shutter there was a wire that there was a wire that was attached to the shutter, and that wire ran down the kite all the way to the bottom of the string that the guy was holding. So when he wanted to take a picture, he pressed the button and then the impulse traveled for selfie. So that's the first selfie is what it was. Telegraph operator, very similar thing. The wire for the telegraph ran down the balloon line to the ground. So do you remember the other day are more out of the day? Or it wasn't in morons in the news. I can't remember the backpack pigeon delivering crystal meth into the prison. Right. Well, well, back in World War I, okay? They put little cameras and backpacks on carrier pigeons and they sent them up in the sky and the pigeons would try to take photos, but it turns out, here's going to be a shock. The pigeons were not good photographers. The pigeons did not do a great job. But they turned some of those photos into postcards. And they were like, oh, look, it's a pigeon photo postcard. The CIA fast forward now all the way, the CIA did a whole series of tests on pigeon photographers, where they would strap these little cameras to the pigeons, and they would tell them what to do, and they would send them up to take up close surveillance photos of spy targets, and the reason that that stopped is because the CIA was like, these pigeons do not take direction well. Well, sir, it's a pigeon, and it's brain is very small. And you're asking it to operate a camera and take specific pictures of specific things. That feels ambitious to me. How about y'all? Yeah, definitely. I'll tell you, the idea that I would be a soldier that is going up over a battle between the north and the south in a balloon to give information to the north about where the troops were, the southern troops were. That is a really brave person. You know? Because down below, you got about a thousand really pissed off. Southern soldiers that are going to try to shoot you out of the only. You know what I would do? You know what I would do on the balloon in giant letters, I would put C rock city, okay? So then they would just for funsies. They would think that I was on their side. That's what I would do. The only thing I can guess is that the guns back then didn't have the kind of range where you could shoot and hit a balloon. But isn't that wild? So we think this is like, oh, this is something new that's going on. This has been going on for hundreds of years. But breaking news, The Pentagon has said that the latest objects up there are UFOs and they have contacted an alien and they asked the alien, what are you doing? And he said, don't worry about it. "Of the equation. They will like it. They love it. Oh what up animals. This is my impression of an goal. An eagle and you. You put a couple right okay. Okay oh i god is this a lot. That's an eagle. Yeah yeah so. I i just feel like you know. I think we've learned that nothing is impossible delicious. Let's continue to work on this. Because i really would like to bring my dog to the national parks. My own bubble. I been waiting years. Yeah i it's eagle. I know you don't have to keep saying eagles still very but he just can't. It's like we're trying to do some. Oh my goodness and stucco and never knew the proof is in the pudding. Eagles love it. Bubble national perks bringing our dogs. Two thousand twenty two here. We go all right. Yes alexis here in listening. You're listening. It's time for for doug history that. I don't think we've already done limit. Okay yeah no. I feel pretty confident. Yeah i think so too. I mean if we have. It's a really good one and you're welcome for the twice so i i think an just an interesting start to this The the the question like who was the first therapy dog right. And there's not like a perfect answer for this like most things. These kind of ideas kind of happen. This are popping up and who knows who influenced to. There's one argument that there was a dog in the nineteen sixties Who was used a therapy dog for children with autism Before that sigmund freud had a chow chow josie And he regularly attended their sessions. But i didn't say like this is doing therapy. It was also just like maybe he just bought his dog. We don't know but the main contender for the very first officially recognized. Therapy dog is a very tiny yorkshire terrier. You only weighed four pounds. And his name was smokey. Oh buddy and k yes already. And there are photos a smokey and he's really Like it's one of those picture of all. I feel better so it makes sense that like right away. They're like well. He's just so -peutic before he was ever a therapy dog though he was a war. Hero i suppose is the best He was founded in nineteen forty four fully brown who's abandoned foxhole In the new guinea jungle going. However i like this this little side story. Yeah a soldier who found him Was running out of money in a poker game and sold her to corporal william wine who is a photographer with us. Air force sold for a whopping six dollars. And so for the next two years smokey would be carried around in wines backpack and would share his rations. She would coming him on. Combat flights south pacific and ultimately she flew twelve. Aaron sea rescue and photo wreck re consonants missions With the fifth air force smoking. I know she. Also there's a whole side story where they needed to Get a phone line running again. And they didn't have time to do the whole thing but they were able to get smokey to go basically under through a tunnel on come out the other side loading the thing. They needed the just an incredible dog already but she has. Her therapy work began. When wind came down with an gay fever and he was sent to the station hospital in new guinea and he his his friends smuggled in smoky to keep him company when he was in the hospital and while she was there then. The nurses observed the positive effect. The little dog had not only to wine but the other patients in the hospital of course honestly They taught smokey little tricks. And smokey would do them for everyone and everyone was just in a much better mood and like it broke through that negative emotional malays which like didn't help injured. Soldiers got better faster when they're in better moods of course absolutely right. Happiness factor. So the positive effect smokey was having ultimately brought attention Got the attention of dr trials. Mayo of the mayo clinic. Who at that. Time was commanding officer at the hospital. Which is crazy to me that like. I don't know the mayo clinic so famous and this little story all ties together. But he issued orders. Which allowed smokey to go on rounds with the medical personnel and also permitted her to sleep with wine in the hospital bed for five nights that he was there. It was like this house. Smokey started her career as therapy dog and would continue for the rest of world war two and afterwards Yeah so she kept on going Moved here and the people they were like. Hey this really works but they could add other dogs do this. This is something that work. Yeah back to the. Us toward america's in hospitals in america and retired in nineteen fifty five. Oh smokey and there's also a statue in cleveland of yeah yeah of course got to be so we'll take the cruise to alaska and then circle back to cleveland. Hey smokey yes for doesn't work. And what a i just i get. It's so cute to me that says like such a tiny dog ended up like resulting this huge like field of work. It's right it's really cute. It's absolutely yeah. I mean it's almost like we've been podcasting about it for seven. Years of dogs are phenomenal. Can't run out of stories. about how obese. Yes in every one of them is extraordinary what they can do. It's just the best smokey leading the pack. Great jobs just the best great.

Drivers report seen a lone man walking down the quiet portion of this road as they approach he turns towards him an appears to be screaming though no sound is heard then he vanishes into thin air and that brings us to our last location in layton. Hobbs restore. let me start off by saying that. If you do a search for the curse of hobbs reservoir you won't get any results the curse as i call. It doesn't seem to actually exist. Couldn't find any record of a curse neither from the youth or go shoot tribes nor anywhere else for that matter nevertheless what we are about to talk about to me seems nothing less than a curse on the land pump out bomb. Had to throw that in there for you okay. Love in nineteen sixty. It was decided that the town's current reservoir snow creek. Reservoir was not large enough to meet. The town's water needs it was decided that a damn a new reservoir was needed and construction began in hobbs. Hollow in northeast layton and walk could find no official account of how long it took to build it most likely was completed sometime in the nineteen twenties. Probably mid late. Twenties hop hollows got its name from the family that settled there in the late. Eighteen hundreds the reservoir would have a sixteen hundred acre water capacity with a greatest depth of thirty feet was built by the case. Creek irrigation company. This reservoir is located at the intersection of highway. Eighty nine in one ninety three west of the wasatch national forest and east of hill air force base. Most people don't swim in haver reservoir often or for very long the eight years or so of the reservoir would see the drownings of half a dozen young people dam. And that's me is where the curse comes in A lot of websites online lotteries online actually referred to it as the haunting of hobbs reservoir I couldn't find really any found a couple of accounts of quote unquote peril mike But really what you find. More are just the voluminous amounts of drownings. That have occurred here about twenty years after it was completed on july. Twenty first nineteen forty-three. An article from the standard examiner was published. That stated contamination was found in the reservoir and it was deemed unfit for swimming. It further stated that anyone found swimming would be subject to disciplinary action. They made it some length before the private began. Wayne both them down and began to lose his grip on.
