"Nil Fulham two and open up from Carlos Vinicius and a stooping header from a gent who has real life experience launching arrows on funeral pious. Alexander mitrovic, they serve as the saints funeral as they are mathematically relegated after an 11 year lease on Premier League life. Record 15th Premier League win for Fulham who many predicted would be straight back down again this season, but it was a last dance for Southampton, down really without a whimper. I had to win to stay up, they failed. This team had been a Premier League fixture since 2012. Hadn't won a league game since March. You said to see them go, David. You know, not especially. I think I predicted this, maybe last season, not this season, I thought Southampton were going to go down. That club had some strange decisions this year, particularly. But there are some players who I am going to miss a lot. You know, I imagine that Southampton will be raided by other Premier League teams and the teams coming up for some of those players. You look at a guy like James ward prowse, you can't imagine him not being useful to a team somewhere in the Premier League, certainly. But yeah, they've played some wonderful football. It's an incredibly well run club in some ways they were Brighton and hove Albion before Brighton and hove Albion were Brian. That's the warning. That's the warning. So yeah, I think they'll be back great support great pitch, great stadium, good club. Three managers this season, years of gradual decline, culminating total flat tire of a season reports of a divided locker room between young and old players in the wake of a 165 million spluttered on 50 mostly raw young talents across two windows in this first full year of Serbian billionaire dragon so lax ownership, one that's ended in the club sinking out the Premier League without fight or spirit. It is bloody sad because as you say, there is a passionate loyal fan base down there. And I talked about this on Friday that I can remember going there in 2015 to make a film the Southampton way, holding up the club, and this is the warning to the abrasions you Brentford, Southampton were held up as a model of a great run club. In the midst of their run, 2013 to 2017, Southampton finished no lower than 8th. I made that film about their youth recruitment, the cuman era. They scouted so smartly, Sadio Mané Virgil van DIJK Tadic, the academy was a pride of England, Calum chambers, Luke Shaw, Gareth Bale, the ox, lalana, felt like Champions League was their future to reminder that everything is temporary, enjoy it when the great times are there. There's a great quote in the athletic story about the club's dark season. One of the players said relegation is like being punched in the face a hundred times before having your head chopped off, which captures a lot. However, there's also a school of thought the Burnley school of thought that when you go down most players contracts are reduced by 40%, which leads to an exodus, chance to reset, reset with youth, young and hungry, and if Southampton can rewire reconnect to their academy, the lungs of the nation again, that can be light at the end of this darkness. You talk about players, David, James wood prowse getting relegated. I did wonder chat to a mate this weekend. If this is the best caliber group of players to ever be in a relegation battle, if you put together many GFP send these in because they always do when we talk about it, you can put together an 11 of like Morgan Gibbs white, James Madison, Jordan Pickford, Tyler Adams. James ward Proust Rubin never Declan rice and more. Dwight McNeil. Yes, thank you. Oh. Yeah, but that's the Premier League. It is just so much quality from the top to the bottom and we watch these remarkable fans think I think all the time about the early days of this season and the Leeds bandwagon and the number of ag hops who got so excited about leads and the inevitability of this team on the rise and it's just for it's a tough league. It will bite you in the ass because there's every single week. I do wonder where that best relegation battle 11 would actually come in this league if you pieced it together. David, but I think J WP's going to be awesome at Burnley. The problem is they'd have to play against the worst Premier League, the worst leg leading team. You'd have to put a team of like, you know, I was actually going to name a Chelsea player, but we're not even in the top of the league. You'd have to take the worst players playing for the best teams and see them playing against the best players playing for the worst teams. This could be a big idea. We should maybe put this together. I think we just solved the Super League problem. Oh my God, I hope bear is not listening. Brentford two West Ham mill, bee's versus bubbles in this longitudinal London Derby, East London, traveling west, to West London, and it was Ivan Tony less Brentford, who went ahead thanks to a tidy strike from Brian and blame well, his 7th of the season. Then they doubled the lead very good old fashioned long throw Ben me flick, a Johann we shall finish for the irons, it's all eyes on Thursday and the second leg of their Europa conference league semifinal against AC alkmaar. Yeah, this is West Ham's second string rice bearing on the bench Antonio resting a knock ahead of the Europa conference. Second leg, facing a Brentford without Ivan Toney, as you say, out with a hamstring injury. This game, akin to going to a Broadway musical and finding the entire cast out and just the understudies like Danny ings and Maxwell corneille taking the field and I was imagining them taking the stage in a Broadway musical, it would be that would be wonderful to see. Brentford secure a top half finish in the top flight for the first time since 1938. They did say with predictions of second season syndrome following the loss of Christian Eriksen. This season has been a testament to Thomas Frank. What a manager. Talking to managers. Here's the worry for Everton. David Moyes clearly now focusing purely on the Europa conference league campaign resting players and the irons final two games in the league against Everton's biggest rivals in the bid to avoid the drop legion united and Leicester City, David Moyes and now you listen to this podcast. I am begging you on my knees I'm begging you please. Don't leave us this way. Crystal Palace too Bournemouth nil selhurst park looking more like Raqqa park as a pair of and one mixtape tourist goals from Crystal Palace sink the cherries two wonderfully intelligent artistic skill soaked team goals capped by ever Ritchie as a highlight just how much this palace team has to be excited about going forward. Both these teams safe and uncle Roy free to look forward to Ibiza where he'll be DJing this summer. God, 787 pages of James Joyce Ulysses. If that was what this Premier League season has been, the re Hodgson revival would be just a minor minor, probably forgotten, but truly joyous subplot. I mean, palace for flailing, the arrival of this old man, this retread, this warmed up corpse. It's meant to doom them. Instead, it's been the kiss of life, one that's delivered, and not in a defensive missionary position football kind of way, but goals, goals, goals, look at that second palace goal majestic team move invention clinically, cistern by AZ, a gently now reached double figures goals in just 28 games, fulfilling his promise at the very time will saha out of contract at the end of the season was cheered off the field by a home crowd who are not sure if does see him again in a palace Jersey, Bournemouth, poor on this day, but now safe, huge respect to American owner Bill foley, who promised to such and has delivered and bought a social media manager unleashed a truly great video capturing every pundit over Christmas declaring that Bournemouth guaranteed odds on lock on, you could count it to go down, they live another tiny subplot, which deserves huge, huge respect, fighting cherries. "Basically I don't know what their rule but the NASA. Well, higher rate environment, right? We've talked about this in valuations. Do I need to do I need to bring out the textbooks for you? It works until it doesn't work, right? Let's take a look at the sector. Are these picture books? Energy stocks, if you want a picture to go with that, just look at oil prices and where they're headed, which is down. So you have energy stocks losing ground as well, 1.7% lower. Financials taking a hit, dick beauvais over at Odeon capital group, downgrading Bank of America talking about how higher interest rates is going to put pressure on the net interest income. On the upside, real estate investment trust utilities, interest rate sensitive names. All right, we'll go back up to some of the individual movers here. Apple has been basically trying to hold the line here in the green up about 6 tenths of a percent here. I don't know if this is because of AirPods, like on a rock Rana told us or yellow iPhone, but folks appear to be finding some degree of comfort there. Two things I want to turn your attention to on the macro here involving caterpillar, how to build a shares up about three tenths of a percent here, and we actually heard a little bit earlier from the CFO, who basically said they don't see a recession here in the North America. They actually seen a relatively strong sales and they think that some of their sales in North America and actually a compensate for any weaknesses that they might be seen in Asia. Meanwhile, you had United Natural Foods, a big food distributor here, though shares down 28%. And they talked a lot about costs. This they're basically saying, we're selling enough product, but they're saying that their costs, their input costs. Their vendor costs here are still through the roof and they said, more importantly, it's the volatility of those costs that has really made it difficult for them to adjust. And then brown form and of course maker of Jack Daniels cited something similar. Again, it wasn't just about higher costs, but the conversation was about the volatility in some of those costs and some of those input costs and how that's been really constraining earnings. Of course, we go back up to the broader market here. You were talking about the inversion Mike Regan on the two tens. And I know you're a big value investor guy. I know you were like, why do you think he is? He is. Don't laugh. Yes, he makes a big point of it. But here, simple math here, Mike Regan. The chart on the screen there for our radio audience here. You take the yield earnings yield on the S&P 500, subtract the two year yield to higher that number. In theory, that means stocks are more attractive. The lower that number, that means stocks less attractive. Right now, that number is the lowest it's been in the global post global financial crisis era. Pretty remarkable. I mean, we were living in unusual times. You guys had a great interview. With Alan blinder about this kind of the economic data breaking down, and that makes it really hard for the fed. And yet the fed's going to have to make a decision very soon. Having said that, Bridgewater associates co CIO Karen corneille dimbo, she, even though the fed has said no decision has been made about what the fed, the Jay Powell has not said, no decision has been made in terms of what they're going to do in March. She says the fed's got to stay the course. Listen up everybody. It sure looks like the economy is resilient and they're going to have to raise certainly more than it's priced in. If you look at the market pricing, it's actually suggesting that they're going to be able to cut pretty soon. And that seems completely implausible to me. All right, that's Bridgewater associates co CIO Karen Carnegie. Correctly. Anyway, she was earlier on Bloomberg TV, but this whole point is she thinks that fed's got to keep doing. Jay pal has said, data dependent, right, scarlet, they still haven't made up their mind. And yet, the market seems to have kind of made up its mind in some ways. On Tuesday, he set the table, he opened the door. He made space for himself and for the fed to raise race by 50 basis points. So the thinking now is 50 basis points of new 25 basis points. The fed would not have brought it up unless they were serious about it, and at this point what they need to be convinced by the data by, say, the jobs report or the inflation report next week to only raise by a quarter of a percentage point. Yeah, right. And I think the biggest issue it all goes back to that dot plot. The thing is just so stale by now, the last one we got was in December with all the fed members rate projections for what they thought the fed funds rate is going to do. So the assumption is those dots all moved higher, right? Just based on chair pals, comments based on all the comments from fed officials remains cousin Raphael bostic. And everyone, really. So the assumption is these stocks are going up, but we just don't know how high they're going up. Yeah, we don't know. But then this gets back to the idea here of communication, Mike, with the market. And I know we heard from bob Michael over on the Bloomberg television, a little bit earlier, talking about this idea. And this was specifically referring to yesterday's testimony, but this idea that if they do reaccelerate back to 50, that might actually rattle the markets more than just staying in the course of 25. You think, even though he made clear that every meeting is they reset the table completely. And every meeting they determine what they're going to do at that meeting. There's no set course for any of this. I would argue this is an incredibly transparent fad. I mean, some have even argued that, you know, we're here in enough from fed officials at this point. I think they put 50 out. Wait. I think they put, I think they put 50 out there to say, it's a possibility because everything is on the table depending on the data. And I think it's just so that it doesn't necessarily rattle the markets. Ken Griffin, who said, say less. Great orator there, a former Chicago. And what's your point out, Carol master? Quiet period starts on Saturday for the fit. So your wish has that been granted. Although there is one more fit to speak tomorrow. A little old for everybody. A little photo. "Richard Gasquet and Elise corneille for France while Switzerland will feature Belinda bencic and Leandro rietti, what do you make of this announcement? The players that they've got, do you think it's do you think it can be a success? Because the one thing I am worried about is that this is in like late July and I was looking at the schedule and there's a lot of events going on at the same time events with ranking points. You got Budapest, Palermo, gestad and bash dad, all on at the same time, how are they going to draw players to play an exhibition event when ranking points are on is my biggest worry. I mean, especially the week after Wimbledon, so if these players do play well at Wimbledon and get great results, there's no way that they'll be turning up the next week for the Hopman Cup. So I have to say it's a real scheduling. I think it's something that nature of when it was played previously and in Australia was a very natural warmup type event because it meant that you got to play more than one singles guaranteed because it was a round Robin format. And lots of top players like that because you don't necessarily play one match and then suddenly you're playing a Grand Slam. So I don't think the scheduling is particularly good. I do think it's probably one of the worst scheduling of an event possibly ever because if you want to attract top talent, it's very hard for those players to commit and know that they will be there because you don't want to pull that last minute and be one of those players that does that. And it is quite like an intense week because you will be playing multiple matches in a day because the nature of that tournament. So if you're a mid to lower ranked player, your eyes will be on the ranking points. And if you're a top ranked player, you're probably hope that you wouldn't want to be there by the time it comes around to the tournament. So I fell for the organizers. It's very hard to schedule a tournament and to get people to play at any time of the year when there are no ranking points or the line, hence the united cup did have ranking points. But I think when it comes down to it, most of these players won't necessarily be there with full certainty. Yeah, it's going to be tough. Yeah, for me, just reading about it. It feels like a bit of a comedown from after Wimbledon, nice lawn tennis club. It's giving me like hurlingham club exhibition type vibes. I can't see the real competition be there. I think it might be a bit more playful, a bit more, as I say in a true pure kind of exhibition, have some rose, have some rose, watch some tennis. Yeah, exactly. And that can attract that can attract a crowd and we'll have to see, we'll have to see how it does. I do enjoy that they brought back the name, the Hopman Cup, feel like it's been off the tour for too long. But yeah, let's wait and see, let's see what the other pairs are you saw at it's no longer in Australia that was my question because obviously that was the nature of it was that it was there previously because of Harry Hopman, obviously. No, I think legacies I think legacies can travel around the world. I think the saddest thing I've obviously not being in Australia, as you said, is that timing that it was at the start. It was nice. It was a nice, easy way into the season. Whereas this is like peak, middle of the season, and to have, I think, what the, you know, the towns and the association of the event from the start of the season, now punking that in the middle of the season. I feel like there's going to need to be some sort of reset, maybe even some sort of reset there in terms of what this is. Why can't we just call the united cup the Hopman Cup and everyone's happy? I know. I know. That would, you know, that would be the, I think, the logical thing. But yeah, we'll see how it goes. Yeah, we've got three pairs still to wait on, but we do have Indian Wells coming up. This week starts tomorrow, draws are out qualifying as underway. I think final qualifying rounds are tonight. My already be underway. We're going to quickly look at the men and women's jaws and we're going to offer some Grand Slam style predictions for you listeners. Kim has actually also got in touch and told us her expected champion. So we've all had our say and looking at the men's draw. Well, actually, let's first we'll look at who's not in the menstrual because that's been a big lead up story to the announcement, both Rafa and Novak Djokovic not there, Rafa not there, still coming back from injury. You suspect he's just kind of getting himself ready for the clay season. The sad thing about that is that, again, another record that maybe we don't talk about enough versus grand slams after 17 years, yes, 17 years, ten months, 23 days. He is going to be exiting the top ten. So yeah, get out the violins very, very sad for that. 17 years. I know, it's a genuinely that is a mad stat that, you know, give it a lot of the injuries. That's unbelievable. It's unbelievable exactly. So rapha's not there. And Novak Djokovic is not there. He is, as we all know, he's not vaccinated. He applied, I think, to get into the United States. There was some surprising kind of lobbying going on from the USTA in the U.S. open, social media account, which sort of took me by surprise, but he wasn't allowed entry. He did do the noble thing this time though and dropped out before the draw was made. Chris, what do you make of this? This is not kind of anything new. We've had this happen before, but it's a little bit different this time.

"Chance, CNN. Welcome back. There's no chance the new Manchester United boss is getting caught up in false positivity to kick off the new year. Ralph rang next certainly, playing it pretty straight. Admitting there are still quite a few steps to go before his team compete with the best after defeat to wolves in their first game of 2022. It was wolves first game in over two weeks after the cancellation of previous matches, but they were quickest out of the traps. Just couldn't convert their early chances until 8 minutes from time, Phil Jones made a mess of his clearance in the end 35 year old Jammu Tino picked up the ball on the edge of the area to convert for his first goal in nearly a year. It really was he deserved victory for wolves. It sees them move up to 8th in the table. One point behind united who stays 7. We're all very disappointed. We knew that it would be a complicated game against wolves. Because they are very flexible in their build up, we spoke with the team before the game about the pressing triggers. But we were struggling in the first 50 minutes to get any pressure at all on the ball. But the goal that we conceded once again showed that we just have to get better when the other team is in possession of the ball. So united stay a whopping 22 points behind leaders, Manchester City, but as you can see, they have played two games less small comfort city with that ten point lead. Over Chelsea at the top though.
