"So it seems, as those who did the most and had the most revelation also suffered the most, so it's a different way to look at it. For our story, as you mentioned, our daughter Linda died in my arms when she was 5 years old in 2012. But as I look back on that with hindsight, healed, I've done counseling. I've made sure to do all the work I needed to do with it mentally, spiritually, emotionally relationally, but I can look back on that and honestly say it was an honor to be trusted with that suffering because in it God made me stronger. God gave me more vision and he made me way more. You know, you become a spiritual heavyweight when you suffer and that's why Paul told or James told the Christians to rejoice at various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces perseverance and perseverance hope and on and on it goes. That is really good. The enemy of our souls, as you're describing, I mean, he attacks us with lies based on fear and shame and condemnation, how do we use God's power to regain that high ground? Well, in the book, and the reason the subtitle is the way it is, is because that takes place in the mind. You have to learn to think right before you can live right. And that's why scripture from the beginning to the end places a great emphasis on the thoughts that we allow in our heads, Paul said, set your mind on things that are above. So you have to, like you mentioned, take the high ground in the city of Corinth, there was this tower, and whoever, historically, controlled that tower controlled Corinth. So Paul said, we take down spiritual high places, high strongholds. And in your body, the highest part of your anatomy is your head. And if the enemy can steer your mind, he'll be able to steer the outcome of your life. Man, that is so good. It's so true. I love that line analogy that you've used in a couple of your books, this idea that you run toward the roar. Describe it for those that haven't heard that. What are you driving at? Yeah, when lions hunt, oftentimes, the lionesses who do the bulk of the work, not much is different in the human world. They will creep ahead and hide and then the male lion who's got that big roar, you know, and everyone thinks that's the big show. He'll kind of bellow. 5 miles away, I think you can hear lions roar and the gazelle thinks that that's the biggest threat. The roar, the sound of the scary drawer..

"Over there today. But i was thinking how each cd's somebody whose situation is uniquely difficult and uniquely wonderful while we were praising the same god a minute ago we were praising the same god for a lot of different things somebody was praising god just because you didn't get caught your brazen because you memorized colossians in your men's bible study okay you were praising him just goes. Nobody found out about it But as we preach and teach online. And just go and put your name in your city in the chat. God has you situated. God has used situated. Now now corinth was a city. That was situated. It was important because it was a cosmopolitan city that also represented a seaport and it was it was was. It was a flourishing place in terms of culture because you kind of had to go through corinth that was. It was the third largest city by population in his time. The only cities that were bigger than corinth would be roman alexandria. So corinth is not only populated. But it's situated. I want you think about this from an. It was a very important city because it was a port city and that meant that the ships came through there and it was situated well enough distribution could happen and trade could happen and commerce could happen because of where corinth was situated on the other hand corinth was a very ungodly city because the same situation that made it so effective for business made it susceptible to temptation corinth was a city where there was a lot of sexual immorality back in the bible times. They had different problems than we have today. They had sexual immorality. Even in the church. Some people were messing around in the church. At corinth can you believe those crazy. Christians at corinth and paul eighteen months with him and he couldn't cast out all these sexual devils he couldn't out all of these idolatry devils. They were so greedy. They were getting drunk. Off the lord's communion wine and corn bunch of crazy christians in corinth. I used to find it. Funny people say. I don't go to elevation back. We used to start. They would say. I don't go to elevations because some of the people that go there. Some of the people that go. There aren't very good. Christians and i would always think that should be your invitation.

"Necessarily be because there are books that kind of overlap and stuff but even romans though it's the first pauline epistle that we get to is written toward the end of his third missionary journey. So paul has been boots on the ground sharing the gospel and planting churches in doing his missionary work now for a long time. And so when we get to a book like romans that i will raise my hand and say is one of the most difficult books in the bible according to amanda difficult to understand. There's a lot that like really dense. It's very theologically dense and for us to remember that. Paul has been seeing this and living this and learning this now for for a minute. You know and so so. That's good for us to remember. But it's we just we have to keep trucking girl into my day. About ten years he'd been before romans was written and like in paul's ministry. It's like this is crazy town. Like i'm talking. You know spreading this message. That is extremely counterculture. He's to pull you know right around. The mediterranean ride outs ri- rosenberg glamorous. As that sounds picture. Yeah all right so here. We go first corinthians. So we're going to get. I corinthians in second corinthians which shocker ridden written to people in corinth which is called corinthians and they are you know no surprise struggling to figure out how to live as christians in a culture that is non christian right right. Does that sound. Yeah and so this first. Corinthians has a lot of practical instructions about a lot of things. We're not going to be able to cover them all about like life and relationships and ministry so he spent about eighteen months in corinth planting this church and so that was like fifty and then he actually wrote these letters. Six years later great. That's back to the carinthian churches so they have a relationship that's that is established. But it's been a while since then since he first entered corn and share the gospel with them. That's great okay. That's good so good framework so like we get a little bit. I would love to read. Like maybe a couple of short passages because so we kind of get some framework here in. I corinthians chapter one. Kim would you mind reading for through nine for us.

"All right polls at corinth. He's doing some teaching things have gone very well but it does have some concerns. What's scott telling anybody remember. There's this vision. And what is god saying. The vision all right. Don't be afraid you haven't going into the house of titus justice things. We're not going very well with jews. Ex-cia eighteen over seven christmas. Of course the ruler of the synagogue. He believes in the lord with all his house. And then you have in verse nine. That vision stop being afraid. It's no longer right to do that when you look at. What paul is doing here really is a good illustration of the great commission. We talked about this back. When we're in the life of christ you may remember that jesus said go make disciples of all the nations. He tells his disciples the idea. There are three subordinate participles. And the idea is as you're going you make disciples as you go out into the world as you deal with people at work school neighborhood. Wherever they are you go and you make disciples and then he talks about how those disciples are made. He says you baptize people. That's the disciple making process. People are baptized into christ and there is that teaching process. You're trying to strengthen those christians you're trying to help them mature you're trying to get them to the point where they can go out and reach others. Paul is spending a lot of time at corinth to do that. Very thing and god says. I've got much people in the city. Not that he had pre selected people but he knew the hearts of people he knew that there were individuals who would obey the gospel if it was simply preached and he tells paul go you preach you teach and that is exactly right a parallel to what we're seeing in matthew chapter twenty eight would be go clean your room and you do that by vacuuming dusting picking up the toys and you say something and then you explain it. That's what jesus did when it comes to the great commission. God says with you. We didn't give this referencing last week class. But you remember over there in matthew chapter one. We've got one of the scriptures for jesus. His name is emmanuel which is being translated or being interpreted what god with us. How interesting when we think about jesus emmanuel god with us and here it is the lord appearing to paul acts chapter eighteen and says i am going to be with you here something that i want one of the unusual things against we might not normally do awesome here and let's see in verse one to the class that twenty six combine twenty places i team with twenty four plus sign there and then after that long jackson chapter forty six three all look now biggest chapter plane versus one teen seventeen rivera. Well lou. Chapter one adversary. O.'neil hit.

Did Paul Actually Say That?

"Thing we're going to look at today as how it's hard to know when Paul is saying something original, and when he's quoting what someone else had said, and this might not seem like a big deal, but let's check out first. Corinthians seven I one and then IV, we Paul right this. Now for the matters. You wrote about so now. We're going to expect him to quote something. They wrote about and he does because quote quote. It is good for a man not to have sexual relations with a woman. Unquote within Paul goes on, but since sexual immorality is occurring, each man should have sexual relations with his wife and each woman with her own husband, but here's the thing I'm looking at the new American standard they. They, do not mark that phrase in quote marks, and so what it forces, the reader to do is to put together some kind of logic for the flow of thought, because it doesn't market as not Paul's Voice, the first, Bible is given as a study Bible was a new American standard I remember struggling with prescription seven, trying to figure out Paul's line of thought his opening line. Is it good for men not to touch? And then the next line is but because of immorality each one should have his own wife and each woman should have her own husband, and then on that reading marriage becomes a concession, so look at this verse with two different translations of one could indicate that Paul only approves of marriage as a concession due to our sex extra while the other would indicate that Paul is responding to a specific question. The Church of Corinth had asked him. And since the original language doesn't have quotation marks. We have to do our best figure out where they should go to. Here's the whole point. Paul regularly is quoting excerpts of previous conversations or what people are saying. I think the stakes are high in the section of the Bible. Because again there so quotable, it's easier to take them out of context statements out of context than many other parts of the Bible and so think it really pays off to develop a thoughtful set of reading skills

"Who were less prominent tended to minimize themselves they had a self esteem problem and those who were more important tend to minimize others they thought that they were important in other people work and Paul wanted people in the church of Corinth the realized everybody is needed everybody is necessary and all people need to be United functioning together as a strong body of Christ so when Paul writes first Corinthians twelve twenty to twenty six what he says is god wants his church to realize that every member is an important part of the body of Christ no matter how public or private his spiritual gift now the church of god is one body comprised of many parts every part is important every part is needed every part is unique and every part is significant to the sovereign work of god god draws people to himself and to his church each person is needed each person is necessary and when people in a church recognize that reality the church is moving in a direction of spirituality and blessing the tragedy is there are some times when some people do not think they are worth anything or they don't think that they're doing anything if they're not in some key lime light position that is not true the fact is everyone is necessary everyone is needed as god forms is by now in first Corinthians twelve twenty to twenty six there are six critical realities that Paul brings out reality number one there are many members but only one body verse twenty says but now there are many members but one body again I cannot help but get the impression that the Corinthians were very confused on the subject because Paul keeps repeating.

The Church's One Foundation (1 Corinthians 3:1011)

Pray the Word with David Platt

The Church's One Foundation (1 Corinthians 3:1011)

"First Corinthians chapter three versus ten and eleven according to the grace of God given to me like a skilled master builder. I laid a foundation and someone else is building upon it. Let each one take care how he builds upon it for no one can lay a foundation of than that which is laid. Which is Jesus? Christ these two verses are I don't overuse the word but they are foundational for understanding the Church and how the church is built so Paul talking about his work in Corinth in the days when the church there was founded and he said according to the grace of God given to me. I love that just the way. Paul always emphasizes how anything he has done is because of grace any thing he is doing is because of God's grace according to the grace given him like a skilled master builder so this is the way the Bible describes here in. First Corinthians chapter three verse. Ten a church planter as a master builder who is building the Church. Now it's really interesting because We think about language in Matthew Chapter Sixteen when Jesus I uses the Word Church and he says To Peter I tell you you are Your Peter and on this rock. I will build my church so Jesus built his church but here we see. First Corinthians chapter three verse ten that Jesus Builds Church through people through skilled master builders church planters. People were planting. A church are skilled master builders. And what's the foundation that they lay? He says I laid a foundation and no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid. Which is Jesus Christ so the foundation of the Church is Christ again? That's the whole point. Paul has been emphasizing all throughout. First Corinthians to this point because They were tempted to look at other people as the foundation of the Church's opposed to Jesus as the foundation and then he says so. I've like skilled master builder later. Foundation for the Church at Corinth and the foundation is Jesus. Then he says let each one take care how he builds upon it and that right. There is an extremely significant extremely important exhortation to every follower of Christ as we think about our membership in a church and particularly any level of leadership in the church that God gives to us but regardless of whether or not we're in a leadership position like we are responsible as followers of Jesus for building his church on the foundation of Jesus. And I Corinthians Chapter Three Verse Ten says let each one take care how he builds upon it so how the church is built on the foundation of Christ we do not have the option of building Jesus Church however we want however seems best to us according to the newest trends according to what we think will work best. We don't have that option. We are responsible for God for building the Church upon the foundation of Jesus in a way that accords with his word and his ways for his glory. So we'll dive and more as we flow in the rest of First Scranton's chapter three what that means. Let's just pause at this point in pray. God We WanNa be faithful to build your church. According to your word you're weighs upon the foundation of Jesus. We don't want there to be any other foundation. Help us to faithfully lay the foundation of Jesus in your Church and everything in your church may be driven by your word. Your ways keep us. We pray from trying to build your church. According to Man's ideas man's opinions man's preferences our ideas. Our opinions are preferences. May We throw those aside and may we be driven in every way by your word to build your church your way not our way. Oh God your way. Please help us. Please guide us in each of our churches to align with your word and God even as we pray for this we pray for places in the world where there is no church where no foundation she says even been laid for the call people in central North Central India millions of them. God and there is no church no known church among this people group. God police change that please. 'cause THE FOUNDATION OF JESUS Christ to be proclaimed and laid there among the call in India. Please raise up churches among the call and India according to your word for the display of Your glory among that people group God Palese we pray for the establishment of your church where the foundation Jesus in the call in India. Police God may be so and send out people from our churches to do it. We pray

"From her enemies obviously the claim of some of the people in Corinth was gonna guided them and got it protected them and that's automatic proof that there right with god but as we'll see in just a few moments the fact that god wants guided and protected Israel didn't necessarily mean that they were right with god the fact that god wants guided and protected you doesn't necessarily prove anything you could have been guided and protected by god and still end up losing record just like many of his real then many people in rebellion love to say well the lord let me in fact I had a person who actually doing something contrary to the word of god said the lord was leading him well just because the lord let you at one time in your life doesn't mean you're going to end up a winner he saw remotely demands that we discipline ourselves in the things of god and that we go to the finish line in order to become a winner the second benefit is all Israel were supernaturally delivered and protected through the sea he says in verse one of chapter ten and all passed through the city all of the nation Israel came out of Egypt and passed through the Red Sea but not all Israel have hearts right with god really some of the Corinthians were boasting about all the things that they had seen god deliver them from perhaps they had been delivered from some sin perhaps they've been delivered from some physical infirmity perhaps they have been delivered from some enemy in any case these Corinthians refusing were using this as an argument that they were right with god I knew a man one time who had a serious drinking problem and god remarkably delivered him from is serious drinking problem but that does not mean the rest of his life was right with god in fact is he was doing other things and saying things that I felt would cost them rewards just because he gets a well god took that away from me doesn't automatically mean he's going to finish a winner we need to discipline ourselves to the ways of the lord we could lose just like many of his real the third benefit that the nation is real experiences all were identified with the great spiritual leader we read in first Corinthians ten two and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea all of the Israelites had been under the miraculous ministry of Moses he was an important and impacting man of god he was one of god's best service and all of Israel and then identified with that powerful man because they followed him Moses had a very special relationship with the lord and all of his real benefit because of that at least some of the Corinthians were using as a basis for their relationship with god the fact that they've been identified with some of the great New Testament ministers some were claiming that they had been linked to Paul summer claiming they had been linked to a policy somewhere claiming they have been linked to see for us that was their claim to fame now it's true then a minister will give an account of the cheap according to Hebrews chapter thirteen verse seventeen but it's also true that when a sheep stands before god will stand alone to give his own account many love to drop names of their former pastor or somebody they heard speak one time and that becomes their claim to spirituality many years ago when I was teaching in grand rapids we had a student who was from a church in California that had been pastored by doctor Chuck Swindoll Dr Chuck Swindoll is a wonderful Bible teacher and a tremendous man of god but that was this students claim to fame is claim to fame was I've been under swindles ministry the fact is we had to take his own exams he could flunk all by himself the truth is he was using his connection to doctor swindle as his claim to fame when in all reality he was a loser of a student you're a believer and you listen to some of the outstanding Bible teachers in the word of god branch you own a library of some of the great videos or CD's of some of the great messages perhaps you've been a great church you've been under a great pastor you have a library of impressive books and tapes you can still die and lose all your reward you see your connection to a great name doesn't mean that much because it doesn't automatically mean.

"Of some churches, they lack good organised. A good pianist good song leader, they lack good organizers good helpers, not Corinth. They didn't let anything Corinth all if you went to the Carinthian church. There were people that could plug into any ministry, and it's quite clear from this one verse in first Corinthians. One seven that we get a good glimpse of what we are to be doing as we wait for the return of Christ. To be utilizing, our spiritual gift in the church. Paul says in verse seven so that you're not lacking any gift as you wait for the revelation of the Lord Jesus Christ the problem with the church of Corinth was not one of lacking spiritual gifts. It was a problem of misusing spiritual gifts some in the Carinthian church. We're not using their gifts at all someone on a different gift than the one. They had some thought they had one gift when they really didn't have that gift someone in a more showy gift the more public gift. This church was karnal this church at Corinth had the potential of doing a dynamic work for God. The problem was most of the people were not content with their spiritual gift, and they were not using it in the right way. And this church was an karnal rut, and as we've said one of the things that makes a church a true church of God is the realize ation and utilization of spiritual gifts the gifts are not present. You don't have a New Testament church. However, we need to also realize that just because there are many spiritually gifted people in the church does not automatic. I mean, you have spirituality in the church the church of Corinth did not lack in his spiritual gifts, but it did lack in his spiritual commitment, I know of a church in which there was a person to do any job. You wanna done in that church? I mean, it had some highly talented and skilled people to do the job it didn't lack for talents. And it didn't have lack for gifts. What it lack was spirituality. You had people who really were more interested in their own little private ministry than they were in the will of God, I know of a case in a church where a man and a spiritual gift of giving. This man was a giver at an unbelievable level. The problem is he also had the gift of drinking and go to bars and get drunk now me he may have had a spiritual gift, but lack real spirituality, and eventually that your tend to do something about it. You see, ladies and gentlemen, just because one has a particular gift and inability to utilize that gift does not mean one.

Alcohol the kids that are able to see the players nowadays. But I mean, they're so skillful. Yeah. Oh, and just when you. What what is so cool about sports, and I experienced this, you know, covering the Bengals for twelve years before nine eleven they lettuce on the field. The last five minutes of a NFL game. Okay. Now, you had to be careful. You didn't want to be on an elevator at a critical part those five minutes. Okay. So either the game was out of hand in a lot of times. I waited until the two minute warning or something to get down on the field. But we're so close to the action. But yet the people out there can do stuff we cannot do we're watching it. We're close to him. That's the beauty of the or they or they walk past you, and they look like a normal human being. It's just that they can hit one hundred mile an hour fastball or a curve that we can't do it. Yeah. That's what's so awesome. Or cornerback. The dude is five ten a buck eighty but. Yeah. "Do we do? The people who've heard us, what do you do with the people who causes pain? Well. All of the situation and the details are unclear. What is clear is that forgiveness was needed in Corinth? Here's what we know. The church previously. Alston and immoral unrepentant. Believer many scholars suggest that this could be a reference to the man mentioned in first Corinthians. Five who committed a gross sexual immorality by living with his father's wife. Other commentators have argued that the offense seems to be something directed against all himself for the church took action. We don't know exactly what the offense was. But apparently after Paul had left Corinth. The Corinthians had exercised church discipline against the offender. They had as a group the sobriety. And the maturity to say, no that's unacceptable. We are not gonna do that here in the church of Jesus Christ. You can't do that. You can't do that to your brothers and sisters in Christ. You can't hurt people like that. You can't hurt yourself like that. You cannot insult the holiness of God. And you cannot bring dishonor or disgrace to the name of Christ like that you have to wake up and you have to. Turn around and soon as soon as they said, you need you need to depart until you're ready to come back to Jesus Christ into.

"I don't know about you. But most of my problems are people problems. I don't see any in the room right now. But you know, what I'm talking about? So when I read Second Corinthians. It gets very personal to me. Gets to the style that you and I deal with and our relationships every day, and it strikes me most and hits me closest to home as a parent and as a pastor. Because it seems to me that an apostle for texting his flock and a father protecting his family have a lot in common. Mean reading this letter from the apostle to these Christians is like eavesdropping on an argument between a frustrated parent and an exasperated teenager, an apostle and his adolescent church. Paul is tired. He's beleaguered he's depressed. He's wondering what the heck is going on in Corinth. Why are they acting this way? Why won't they listen to me? Why won't they do? What I tell them to do. It's a letter that raises issues of authority of control of fear of jealousy of anger, and especially if communication. Bank of it. This way, Paul is apparent and Corinth is a child and now Corinth is rebelling against Paul and against the gospel because of the influence of these new friends the churches being led astray, not only because of the pagan culture around them. But now also by these heretical, outsiders, teaching crazy things about the gospel teaching crazy things about Paul saying crazy things about Jesus Christ.
