The Curious Case of Frank Gore

"Tim kunin you recently. Wrote a profile of frank gore for espn dot com. So what inspired you to take him on as a topic at this particular moment. It's interesting follow. Because i've watched his career forever. I i'm in the bay area. So i followed him when he was with the forty niners and he's always struck me as someone who's sort of exists outside of our current time. Espn's tim. Qa has been writing about the nfl for three decades. Like he's this guy. That's the third leading rusher all time and yet he doesn't really seem to be appreciated or highlight that you can point to. He's just sort of this guy that has just existed forever in our consciousness and right and the fact that he's he's on the jets. He's he's i mean he's their lead back still. It just became this thing like how. How remarkable it is for someone. His age thirty seven years old From the two thousand five draft class as a running back is still not only in the league but productive and you spoke to him on the phone for a long time for this story and as you say despite him being this guy with a resume that might be worthy of consideration hall of fame consideration. He is fairly anonymous. So tell us what he's actually like. As a person he is amana few words and he is We did have a very long conversation. And you know he's he just is a football guy. I know that sounds like a cliche but everyone you talk to about. Frank says that he's this vont. He's one of those people that that can do these things but isn't particularly good at explaining them. And i think it's partly because what he does is just as is a product of of work and study and just feel and it's another reason why why he's one of a kind. I'm not talking. I'm really not a talker. I know i've been blessed with the bullied. Play football at a high level. I'm glad there every day you know. Give it up all on field in the game. And we'll give my teammates mall to i take advantage of it and why i take advantage of occurs got got taken away from you at college so i know that knows this game not promise nobody as we say in that press conference clipped him. His injuries in college an enormous part of his story early on had come to the university of miami out of nearby coral gables high school as a freshman. He was a backup on that iconic team. That won the two thousand and one national title scoring five touchdowns that year and really impressing people as this up and comer tell us what played out over the next few seasons. You talk about remarkable. I mean he had to l. tears at the university of miami and was on those uteem's with guys like mcgahey in clinton portis in one star after another in the backfield and he pushed himself to overcome these injuries and to compete with those guys obviously for running back. Acl tear is among the worst. And have it have twice in college. You know it would seem to be insurmountable. It cost him some speed as a freshman. He was kind of a revelation as a speed back down. You know what we think of him now isn't necessarily that. It's it's the tough yards and it's the inside yards. So i think he had to adapt a little bit to what he could do when he lost a step or to get the poor right gore riding out what again the man out of coral gables brings the big to the miami hurricane he just wilt himself to become a third round draft. Pick of the forty niners in two thousand five. Only a handful of guys from that drafter still playing in most of them are quarterbacks and kickers.

So can casinos around the rest of the state. Social distancing restrictions will be in place, such as a 50 per cent limit on capacity for the malls. The governor also says indoor dining in the city should be allowed as pressure is continuing to grow to allow the owners of a queen's restaurant filed a $2 billion lawsuit against the mayor Speaker Corey Johnson. He wants indoor dining to return and with indoor dining allowed now another places surrounding New York City Mayor de Blasio facing increasing pressure. He says he'll say something about it soon. And then in addition to all the fun analysts work and following the game. I do have my own company thinks we're trying to show to she and fire sports, which is a platform. I developed to try to help inspire educate and empower women off the court in whatever their career aspirations are. And also, a wonderful mom and wife last question for you Meghan last question for you, you spend a lot of time covering the Miami hurricanes this year, and they are hosting in Coral Gables, they have Florida Gulf Coast. They will play in the first round, and they will meet either UCF or Zona state does Miami make it to this week sixteen. Oh, goodness. Now, see that really tough. And I'm trying to be as short as possible with the the answer your question. I say, yes, they do make it to the fifteen in what's different about Miami this year one they had a really young team last year that had a lot of playing got a lot of playing beer and that onto the dominant interior play that we've seen from a mak- Hof and Beatrice mom premier. I think those are they are the difference makers for for Miami. They haven't interior squad that if the inker of their entire attack, and I think that's really tough for most teams to deal with specially when it's just one game. Right. Maybe over the. Course a couple of games you can find some holes. But I think in that one game I think that Miami's bigs are are gonna help carry them forward. And so I'll be I'll be in Coral Gables. I'll be you know, watching with a close eye on what the hurt he's we're gonna do. But I think that they are gonna you know, get the pass and move forward this season. I do. All right. "Because the man went out there, and he just gave money out. Granted he was at the university of Miami in Coral Gables student center that is a million multimillion dollar center that they just built, you know, two years ago. Granted that was there. He was still giving money to all those people. We won't say anything else about that. And speaking of very private school to give up. Don't worry about it. Don't worry about it. Speaking of giving out money to to some private schools. Let's talk about Duke kidding just that was a joke. Here we go Jay cold. This is why he is quote unquote as they say the goat emoji. And this is why is the bad guy of the week? So NBA all star weekend. It's in North Carolina. Everyone's excited about that. It's in Charlotte was supposed to be there in two thousand seventeen there were some you know, some things that went on. And they got pushback two years, you know, two years away from being two years away. So here we are twenty nineteen j Cole from Vietnam from Fayetteville gets to go back home to the all star game. The NBA ask him to do the halftime performance for the halftime show. He says, you know, what NBA I'm gonna do this like a bad guy. I'm gonna tell you my terms you're going to tell me your terms. And then I'm gonna do what I said there you go. So it goes to the halftime show. He says that he wants all the people on the court have free tickets. Right. So the NBA does not use us. The protocol here. They're like, I guess I guess you're calling the shots now. So all those people in the floor that you saw that was J code is San. Yeah. These are all my fans are going to be down here for free. So to make that work they made them wait in this line for five hours in another building. There's like standing over there. All right. So he felt bad about that. So he decided to not only have the halftime show but to rent another venue and then to do a private show. Yes. This is what bad guys do J Cole rented, another venue out to then have all those people that had to wait in this line for a free ticket to see him at the halftime show in in Charlotte at the all star game with LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Steph curry all these people around them, you know, even Robert Kraft was there wearing a chain for God knows what reason. Some time. But anyways, so then he does the private concert after the show all this was free. You know, he brings out the entire dream vote cast of boss, all these other guys dream OJ ID while lay comes out a lot of people are excited about that. So he does all this for free drops all these bags for free in a time in an era where you could just go down there and to say often with Carolina all these people want to spend money by by by get from me. He says, no, I will drop the bag for my people I will perform for my people. It was a beautiful moment. That is the dream of probably every kid in North Carolina. And to basically be the star of the show in a basketball center. Rhody went for the dunk of the all star game didn't put the dunk down. But still stuff but still for for Dennis Smith junior. Who is a someone that I really respected a door on this podcast for him to put on a man's school jersey. They did not play in the NBA that did not play in college for him to wear just a high school jersey of that person. Which was j Cole and go do a major dunk like that while playing on. The Knicks and then for him to come back and give free tickets everybody. It's a bad guy move all around because you're the center of tension mature, also you you're you're Frank Lucas, you know, you're giving turkeys and everything to everybody for thanksgiving. "Those are the things that you talk about when you're talking about decency. Those are not partisan those aren't kind of like big d type ish. Issues. Those are little d type issues that I think we owe each other also the other thing, I would say is you lead, by example. And so this campaign has been singularly focused on winning, but also undoing it with dignity and with class, and we have done that I have ten days to go. And I will make sure that we finish this with decency. And and I think the last thing I leave you with is it's not just this campaign, but it's many across the country. There are a lot of people who are running as first time candidates who've never done this before who have raised their hands for the very same reason that I raised mine, they're they're veterans. They're women their stem professionals their educators, they're different people than the normal politician normal path, and those people are unified I've gotten the chance to meet many of them on and work with many of them through the last couple of years. And if a few of us make it through that gauntlet. I think we will change the conversation. The the bad asses call this is. Yeah. Yeah. Yep. The Bass's are just a subsection of all of these people occur. That has just the women veterans are women of service. Yeah. I gotcha. Okay. Makes sense. So as I was saying earlier as as a father, and I'm sort of thinking about my kid's life, right? There's three concerns. I have number one is education. You know? I don't know what jobs are actually going to be available to them in twenty twenty five thirty years. Like, you just you just have no way of knowing the way technology is moving climate change is a real concern like will the university of Miami in Coral Gables, actually be an option for them to go to school. Or will it be underwater? Will you need diving to do that and and gun violence, like those those are the three things that I as a dad that I think about the most I want to ask you about sort of climate change and global warming all that stuff because I think one of the things you're running on is education, of course, securing our country and economic growth, and I think one of the challenges with economic growth is balancing regulation, and you know, climate change. There's all. These things happening in, you know, no one can sort of agree on what's right or what's wrong. There's a there was a Sam Harris podcast about the wizard or the freakonomics about the wizard in the prophet and who's sort of going to be right in this whole debate on global warming. So where do you sort of see yourself in in that? Yeah. And it's really a critical issue in. I was struck over the last couple of weeks by a couple of things that came together on that topic of climate change and global warming, whichever one you choose to use the DOD believes it's real all they're building worships and bases and power plants because they are worried that not only do they need to evolve as as a defense department, but the threat is evolving in it's causing mass migrations of humans, it's causing you know, pressure and threats to our country to the planet. So the DOD thinks that climate change is real Exxon Mobil just recently came out and said, you know, what it might be real. And we're going to not only tell you that it's real, but we're gonna talk about carbon trading in carbon caps, which is interesting. We saw the UN say that we're doomed. You know, we we see everywhere that we're doomed except for at our current administration and the current organization that is charged with worrying about protecting the environment. Currently is denying that. This is something they need to be worried about he asked. And so I believe obviously climate change is realized believe that humans caused it..

"How in coral gables both locally and nationally so in addition to these big name that salesmen like william jennings bryan you also had this network of young men called binder boys and they would go out and try to get people to put down payments on houses right they would quote binder which were like downpayment and uh for a certain price so you would get a binder on a piece of land and you would pay for it later and uh they made a lot of money doing that and unfortunately alama them members call on event for binders help create the the fall or the end of the boom because people were not able to pay them all on after on the stock market crash in after the bank failures and everything else so the buying your voice on not only promote is the boom they also helped end it mm you know some of the things did characterized you called boom mike called a bubble but in any wound or sort of glaring examples that in retrospect seems like people behaving completely irrationally what are some of those things like what we're sort of the price jumps that we would see on a plot of land from first purchase to flip to the next flip and so on it we got dramatically federal real hundred acre home pair were basically free i think a cocked about fifteen dollars to apply and so alarmed iran mechanic at home and then it was subdivided and sold off uh so the uh price increases exorbitant onto the owner and the beginning and i f boom craft the prices go up up up i mean it in a cave fan was particularly true uh george merrick wanted to build a beauty for the middle class uh and not he did not start out building this gray on fancy pan subdivision that only happened because it was so popular and people kept pay more and more and more.
