Rises and false: markets v the economy

"Yesterday for the seventh straight week of record number of Americans filing for unemployment more than thirty three million people have now applied for benefits since mid-march totaling a fifth of the workforce from Coast to coast tonight. The faces a deeply personal unemployment crisis. All right the breaking news. A record shattering six point six million Americans toward thirty. Six thousand jobs were lost in the month of calming and they're calling me and it happened. I'm wanting to pay that. But if you looked at the stock market you could be forgiven for wondering if investors have just missed the news if you take a look at the month of April the Dow the S&P at their best month since one thousand nine hundred seven days gains make it official. The Nasdaq is pretty much flat on the year and Kudos to the market and people that still believe in it. It's a long way from March when America's markets dropped by a third the stock markets in the. Us is actually higher than it was in August last year. Which really take step back is incredible because it seems to suggest the pandemic and really the most severe economic slump in modern history. It appears to suggest none of that really matters and will be back to businesses little Patrick Fouls Economists Business Affairs editor and won't turn things around will lead to a resurgence of optimism was basically action by the Federal Reserve. America's Central Bank to prop up the corporate bond market and not meant investors. Suddenly felt comfortable. Companies could raise money and also reduce that fear that some big companies might go bust. But that's bond buying in big companies. What about the small and medium-sized businesses? That we've been talking about a lot on the show that seemed to have been suffering more. I mean remember Copa America. Has this very distinct thing. The company's normally through the bond market rather than boring three banks. So that's the thing the fence targeted. The problem is for the millions of small companies across America. Of course you can't go to Wall Street and issue a multibillion dollar bond so those companies are much more reliant on the banks. The Fed is trying through various tools to pump government money central bank money through the big banks to get to those small mainstream companies. But it's much more complex is much real bureaucratic and so far. We'll see appears to be much less effective. We're in the midst of earning season here. And and the the results haven't been all that encouraging I mean even if the Fed has implicitly backstopped the those those big companies for now. Where where does that leave? Investors at this what investors are weighing on several different. Things I mean basically. There's the prospect of a lot of government stimulus which directs money towards some companies and less so towards others said. That's one fighter but the goal. This question what else do you do with your cash. If you're an investor you can put the money into government bombs but the problem is interest rates are really low in America and they're actually negative in parts of Europe and Japan which means you actually lose money if you buy a bond on hold onto it so it's a kind of near-certain by bets so as a result the pulse Ivanka turnips. Investors are piling into the stock market. But you can get a kind of sense that it's a bit cough hearted because they're not buying companies that are really exposed to booming economy over southern recovery so they're not really investing in restaurant. Shares or airlines holiday shares. In fact the thing they like the best is the big tech companies Amazon facebook Google. And that's because those firms seem to be able to make money whatever the economic conditions right which we saw evidence of yesterday when the Nasdaq Index home to many of those firms turned positive for the year but even though everyone may have acted rationally so far. What about the future? There's all these fears of second. Wave of infections in impacting farms. Are there any other risks to to look out for? One of them is just that what is logical and sensible for companies in isolation doesn't really add up for the economy as a whole so lots of bosses hope to do a lot of cost cutting including firing people in order to generate money to sustain the prophets. They have also to pay some of. The deaths were accumulating over the recession. And you might think that kind of makes sense and if you're invested in a company is is not an unreasonable strategy. The problem is if everyone does that together. What it means is an even deeper slump. Which could suck on from the economy. So what makes sense for one company might be actually quite bad for the economy and the stock market total? The other thing to worry about is fraud and every long boom and we've just had the longest economic expansion the US tends to lead to lots of shifty accounting and financial engineering and one thing to watch for is a really big company. Blow up or admit to cooking the books and previous downtown's think of Enron in two thousand and two thousand one this big company that when essentially bankrupt or more recently leman brothers by these companies kind of leading the stock market done. So that's another thing to watch.

"Seat finding game. Tickets is hard trae, but being there is so much better than not being there. So are replaced my regular seat with the stadium seat to try and recreate that stadium atmosphere? I appreciate the effort, but I got a better idea use vivid seats to find tickets to the game. They make finding the seats that you want quick and easy. Sounds like getting tickets at vivid seats would have been the easier option. It always is. So is once again, be on it. Leering Al messy as his Copa America campaign kicks off today. Obviously, when you take a look at his record, it don't rent vacate that these domestic fold is this is year gap multi. Wow. Somebody trying to sadly, we said that he's come, so close in this COPA in this competition. He's come so close in the World Cup. I think in Argentina's case, obviously, there's another element that this is this is a team that's looking to bounce back after the, the real debacle in Russia. There's some new faces. It's not a team with the pieces necessarily fit together the way you'd always liked them to buy yet. I mean messy is going to be the big story line in this tournament. Particularly with name out out. Oh. Messy shack. Yeah. You have to. Why I continue to believe is the best Preval generation in an Argentine a team, not just somehow manages a shoot themselves in the foot every single time. No mater. What tormented does seem to be going in going into Argentina on people should be only favorites yet still their performances anything. But and this probably lean a message last blast greet chances to win significant civil national team. But even as you look at this 'Argentina team I don't think it's as good as Argentina teams previous Sydney on people, and I'll Tina awfully fees to have as many problems as always always off. Consent decree with shot with his point. God that this team isn't exactly pulling up any trees. But the good thing for Argentina is that we just talked about Brazil, and we look to the starting eleven as well. And indeed these the two favorites Columbia in the mix as well. But overall, the standard of players in this tournament, isn't particularly high standards of teams. Don't exactly blow you away. So in that sense. It is a really good chance Rajin, despite maybe the lack of quality in this daunting. Eleven. When we talk about, you know, the lack of quality in the starting eleven. Kind of feel like who are you talking about, you know, the, the goalkeeper okay, Armani fine by itself as a really good centre-back, alongside alongside go to main d I made field with you. Parade is you've got loose also I think there's a lot of quality, they obviously Rodriguez that, you know, maybe remains to be seen a little bit. And of course, you know, upfront, I think against Colombia, they're lining up with with messy at wet for the Maria. But it sounds pretty good to me. So what's the problem gab lately, we hear overstate problems in the camp, and that sort of stuff has that read? It's had yet or has it been rather quiet preparation in Argentinian standards. I think it's certainly been a quieter preparation. I think there's several reasons for, you know, one is you don't have the zoo like conditions that were created around hawker, some Bali decision. I mean, as you know, I am a some polity fan but heading into the World Cup. Coming up, both vision spell, which has three different managers. A whole number of personalities in around the team. I think a lot of that he's gone. Now while this that I know in the something not that he was the problem. But I think you've got probably more of a group of functional players, or or maybe even players wore superstars, but, you know who are very clear and very comfortable with see with a hierarchy that's there. And, and it should feel more like a team that certainly how it's being billed a we'll see if that's accurate against Colombia, and of course, full Columbia HAMAs Rodriguez once again, gap, starting is this a bit of a shop window for him giving..

"Match against Bolivia side that sats in, but opening for five minutes with really tough viewing. I certainly hope you right down. And that's something that I think was was quite noticeable, even from I'm here in London now, I'll be, I'll be heading out to Brazil towards the end of the group stage on, I hope it picks up. And we saw a little bit. You know in the in the other game as Venezuela Peru game obviously Brazil, not involved there, but a lot of empty seats in Porto Allegre as well. And you know, you contrast that with the last the proper Copa America in Chile in two thousand fifteen and it certainly felt different. Maybe it was a smaller stadiums. Whatever it was. But I think it's pretty obvious this, this competition really hasn't yet kick started yet it hasn't gotten into full flow. And hopefully that'll happen very soon. Now you got excited last night capping off. Let me finish shocker. Was the first penalty just off the bright and you can hear something we don't always get normally the referee communicating with the von officials got. Yeah. And in fact, the first time was actually in, in the first half when a collision involving customer euro and beluga player, I think it was saying, no and possible read. So that went to our and I was like, wow. Look, Mr. Donahue, of course officiated the World Cup final. I could hear every word he saying to do the VR officials how cool but then new. I got I got a call from somebody who said, wait a minute. What did you hear that wasn't supposed to happen mystery Sol's? He's not actually wired for sound simply that the pitch side microphones that are there to provide ambient sound for whatever reason they picked up every word that he was saying that's not supposed to happen. And I would assume that that'll be corrected as it goes on. Host focuses. I didn't put replace it when that involved. They should be Mike Thompson. They shy. I'm also sure why. Sulaiman. It's more insightful. No. Listen. I as a view on seeing it happen. I can understand why why people wanted. But at the same time, I think referees have leeway to make those decisions and how those discussions in a certain level of privacy, I don't feel it fit. I probably for. I just don't think everybody has to be privy to everything that officials say they're making that decision, and you trust them to do that. I don't see why we have to be brought into that from an emphasis Ayman's perspective for spectators point of view, fine. I understand the excitement but you can also understand, or you could also foresee that a referee having a discussion that with his maybe he's, he's having a difference of opinion on the same pictures. That they're seeing you can see that being problematic. The only line you really can gap. Yeah, I think the discussions between the referee and the are really important, what I would love to see is, is a transcript of those discussions released after the game so that so that we can understand why decision was made. I don't necessarily need to, to hear it in real time, and I should stress with baton and as well. Like you only hearing what he was saying you weren't hearing. What what the other guy was saying? I I, I could see I can see show shocks point. But I also think a lot of times just look back to the World Cup final where we only found out weeks later. Why the why the VR was given for for that penalty. You know, it's best, I think if there's if there's more openness and more transparency, just to release a transcript and edited transcript an explanation after the game of what the VA are saw what the referee saw what he considered an we can all move on from there, without conspiracies. "We can be cold. Then comes the factor that, well, maybe you need a coach who can control and, and command that kind of respect from the other players within this dress room. Leila's Clooney is not that man. Young coach coming in. I international tournament. He is not demand that is going to somehow transform this Argentina in a winning team. I just don't see what I would say about that, though is that they have tried everything they have tried to manager with experience. That try the guy who hasn't been there before that, try some Bali, who has been successful. We they try. They tried every single mix. There is to try and it hasn't worked and so might as well. Go with a guy who's who a little bit younger, who can maybe communicate with this place. Look getting the best out of this players any group in any group. I'm not even talking about Tina, but any team around the world it is the job of a manager. They issue with tournaments like this is that you don't have the time to really get a team working together. But the preparation for Copa America. If you used at the time that is available to you, and you just you just have to find three or four concept that you can communicate with this place and make sure that they're that they're doing those things. It doesn't have to be a whole mirror or things because you don't have to play a whole season. It's just five six games that you gotta get together and make sure you get concepts. Right. You get those concerts ride defensively for DNA. And then you allow you to be who he is easier said than done it may not happen. But if it does happen, then, yes, I think, you know, wins it to your point scholarly has only ever been a caretaker, or an assistant. So this is a big step up. The other side of this, of course, is Brazil, we'll take a look at their potential possible. Eleven of course, neymars not in. It is there a case to be made not only that Brazil's better, but that they could play better without name, Marley. No. I'm not gonna sit here make that. Yeah. Name makes a difference for this team and attracts attention from everybody else in this team. So when he's on the feel and he's actually being effective and officiant with his game, then he makes it easier for guys like me know, reach out to some continue. Whoever may be on the field with him. Neymar is a tremendous is so world class talent the best of neymar is up there with the very best. The problem is that the very best of neymar we haven't seen consistently enough. Now, he's out of the picture. And so, I think what it forces this team to do is. All right. We're not going to win just because neymars here, we're going to win because of the strength in numbers and strength of the team strengthened has quite the depth war squad that theme still very good. It's not the dominant Brazil, but it's still very good and should be good enough to go deep in the Serna moment. I think this team will play together. There will be a team concept of about this team. And there may just also. Be the idea that the group gets against everybody thinks we're going to lose because neymars maybe a sense of pride for a team. Goo come out and say, you know what we are good enough to do this. Let's pull together. And let's make sure that we put together a performance that we can be proud of five years ago. I woke up on home soil. I think Brazil hitched all this success is on name on, then once he goes down injured things fall apart. They have the excuse that they were looking for last summer. I made this point name on average three minutes per game on the floor. That's a lot of momentum taking out of a team. That's an research. So there's no like you. I've just seen..

"Welcome into this Thursday edition of ESPN FC shock his lap Sebastian Salazar with you here in studio. Kate, Mark will join us in just a little bit for some more coverage of the women's World Cup. We will also hear from sid low. He was in Madrid for eating hazards presentation with Ramadan. But we start this show with Copa America, which begins tomorrow, in south hollow, Brazil and Bolivia will meet in the tournament opener. They are joining group by Peru and. In groupie Argentina and Colombia will meet on Saturday. They'll also be doing in that group bought by the why in Qatar Qatar Copa America. Debutantes groups, y Ecuador Japan, a guest team and cheer lead the defending Copa America champions. So what are the odds look like for this term it, we'll Brazil, even without neymar steal your tournament favorites, basically, even money Argentina, second favorite there, you do the math, that's just under four to one then it dropped would y Columbia and Keila, and then a bigger drop to everybody else in the field shocker, we know you have picked the field over Brazil, and Argentina saw start with Holly, Allen. When you got one in this thing and why. Look again, so lauds. I'm going to take hinting. Now, frankly, you look at this tournament, this is has why'd openness we've had in Goba Medica. In many years, you can make an argument for Brazil, you can make an argument against Brazil, the you can do the same thing for Dina and really down. The line chiefly has been great in this competitions in years past. But I think this is a team that is getting older, and no better example of a team, getting older than son, just and, and you just kind of go on and on and on. And you'll find yourself in relation where look it is open for somebody who can do string together a few good gains where you defend well and allow your super player your star. They guy that be the one that people want to see win one of the statements, and in intimacy. So if I didn't Dina and I know this is difficult to say because look. His is supported. No. It doesn't support it. And the evidence that we have seen from Dina lay lead wouldn't suggest that they're going to defend well, but if they organize themselves just in a manner in which there at the very least practical and they're defending pragmatic and their defense. They keep it at zero long enough Leinen MRIs good enough to carry this team forward. I wanna take out a Hindi now because it would be ideal for Dana to do this, in Brazilian soul. They were close close in the World Cup in two thousand fourteen I think they closed the deal here in COPA Medica. So Argentina last won at nine hundred ninety three Brazil last one in two thousand seven you've gone outside the box you've said, you believe the field is that because you think the field is strong or you think particularly Brazil Argentina a week a bit of both. I think Brazil Argentina will, again, find somewhere to shoot themselves in the foot Argentina given their recent history, and this tournament given their recent history and big tournaments, how just feel to deliver. They've gotten as as far as finals. What for the last five or Copa America? Then. Twenty fourteen also on Brazilian soil yet..

"But man, I don't know how interesting that is for the listeners surprise of all surprises were both predicting Columbia wins the Copa America. There you go. I I've been on a very bad role in terms of predicting waiters. I think the last two times, I was on your stoppage-time. I predicted very poorly, so, you know, hopefully, I'm wrong because I think if I am wrong that would mean Brazil mixed the final then I have to believe that if Brazil makes a final in Brazil that there has to be some fans support that I think fans would rally and be like okay now we're the final pretended like this is a big deal. And you know, it's funny, I just think that there was a thing, where like Uruguay has urging tina's number much like Columbia is like kind of has resulted number. Right. So I think that I would hope I don't think it's I don't think it's possible because of high predicted it, but it would be fantastic, if before the scope America run out the Brazil played argentino both these teams really need it and really don't need because one of them's gonna lose, and then that's going to be just like, devastating. I think that both the teams need just like like a third fourth place match just like a, a final, that isn't the final, you know, I'm sort of release of the tension. I think both of them just like proven to, like, at least to their home fans that they're like, they, you know that they have what it takes because I think that both Brazilian and Argentine advance or just looking at their national teams and just not feeling the blood, you know, they're, they're not playing with the blood next. The blood that was going to be my question to you. Fully bay in a world where Brazil and Argentina, both make it to the final is that something you're just like you just dread because it's just like a God, the stress is terrible or you like let's go the biggest of all big finals. It's gonna be a bloodbath. And hopefully, we would I I don't think I dreaded this time. I think I would've dreaded it in the in the world. Yeah. In World Cup, two thousand fourteen where think Argentina had the way better side than Brazil did. I would've ended as much in eighteenth Brazilian too much better than our Tino. But and now, I don't think any of the sides are like Brazil's strengths are. You know, not Argentina strengths. I don't they don't really match up that well I dunno. I like I'm not another. I don't fear there. But also, that's because just like I don't think Brazil has as much to lose as other sides have ethic. It's when you have a lot to lose that Argentina is the team you do not wanna play. Well fair enough. So if you're just dying to get, get going on this Copa America, which I certainly am the first game opens Friday, June fourteenth and it's Brazil against Bolivia that should be I mean, that should be a nice easing in start for you fully pay. I assume hopefully, hopefully and then we then we move onto game Saturday to game Sunday. It's gonna be a raucous ride, and I'm sure we'll do some another episode. Maybe after the Copa America is over. Reflecting back on it. I don't think we'll do an episode during but I think after it's over will maybe do a recap of the Copa America. Our thoughts on it. But, but Philippi, this was always a fantastic pleasure to be able to talk the part of the beautiful game. You know, the very best, which is Brazil, South America, and all the, the dirty and wonderful wonder that is the Copa America. It's you know, South American players make name for themselves. Just not the way that it goes down in Europe. It's a different kind of, of name making process. Fair enough. Well, I, I look forward to having you back on the show again soon. And thank you again for managing our Facebook account..

"I mean he's just looking more terrifying than ever so that counts for something counts for something. You know when you look at the other three teams in this group I was kind of, there's part of me was like, well, you know, Japan actually didn't disappoint at the World Cup. They kind of made this surprising run in the, you know, made it further than what we thought out of a difficult group. But then I look and I'm like they're bringing all inexperienced young players. I mean like you, there's going to be a lot of players getting their first caps for Japan. That's no good. So to me there now irrelevant. You never know if it were the Japan that kind of surprised amazed the world at the World Cup almost beating Belgium if only I think Brazil's run in the World Cup would have been a hold of. For sure this is Japan would would and will get eaten alive by you know, the likes of go dean and, you know, Jimenez, you know, Vitol boatswain's were, if they voted to make it pass and then have to face group sees would like the third place receipt. Could face either a Brazil, or the Argentina. So I think. The number three group, qualifier of this group is going to have an easy run. And I don't think I honestly, it's going to be about Japan in Ecuador Ecuador is, I think it's a far cry from the, the good old Balenciaga brother days, but they're also not the type of team to, to, to let Japan, you know, get get cribbed pendens, the acute team, you know, they're like all of them, you know, they're playing so happy. It's like that's there's no joy in Copa America. They're just start. There's no room. Get your happiness outta here. There's no space are smiles. Yeah. To me Ecuador is kind of what you're saying. We're there like that middle middle of the group team, but that is not going to roll over to anybody. And that makes life complicated. I don't think they're ever going to excel, but they're going to make life difficult for other teams. So to me, you know, it is, and that's also kind of what Chile are going to do. So it's kind of a battle in those in that way between those two teams. I think undisputedly the top of this group has to be Uruguay who I think are, you know, are well positioned, they are getting a little old, but we saw the World Cup. They are bring they are a team that I look at it and I say they're kind of doing this transition game right. Yeah. They still got Cavani. Yeah. They still have Goldeen but they have a new crop of young super talented players coming in and it's hard not to. Kind of be kind of like their chances. They do they do. I think the trick was Uruguay. You're also very well positioned for the Copa America, and that they do have a little bit of the sunsetting challenge of both up top, and on defense. I think on defense, it's not a bad thing. You know, the I think the soccer has a higher tolerance for defenders a little bit on the older side. They do for a strikers on the older side. And I think that you're y is is. Is a maybe a little bit earlier or head in the game in terms of kind of rejuvenating, their squad in the midfield. I think one probably one of the younger, but also kind of were young youth and talent meet at mid is probably Uruguay elect salt was extremely exciting. We have Georgia are sky Itta, who is currently the most expensive signing in South America. So the Flamingo purchase them for ridiculous amounts of money, and he flamingos making trying to try to make deep runs Libertadores in. So he's your wise, number ten, which is, you know assured that hasn't been filled out appropriately for a while now. So I think why comes in strong. Euro by also team. It's very well, suited for the type of matches that Arkham Erica. I think Quinn, Uruguay is the, you know, has a lot of the clinical Madrid DNA in, in it. And it's, you know, the say it's the aide who was the beast of Copa America. And so. It just all really lines up really nicely..

"And I think without him as that kind of talismanic figure I agree that the Copa America kind of suits Chile, but I don't think they have it in them. I think they're kind of an old group, and that they're kind of past they've kind of past their prime in this, and I think it's a lot of these teams are in transition and chilies the team that should be in transition, but hasn't really started transitioning yet. And I don't I don't see it going well for them. What are? Do you think? Yeah. I think you make a all very good points. This is I think Chile has a of the teams that could win this. I think has the most approve having sat out of the World Cup to Peru. I think as a huge disappointment for, for Chile for sure. I think she was well, the in recent years would have Chile as third power in South America, which was something that they couldn't they kinda, I think it was rightfully so. But since then not only did they not qualified. They haven't really changed the formula all that much. But, you know, I still think that the doll is the mascot of Copa America. I think whenever you think about cope America, you gotta think about players like Vidal, and this is like this is their, their thing. So I think that a team that starts that has adult who is in Barcelona who is starting his finisher of matches. It is a strong you know, kind of rock to, to stand on. I do think that Sanchez is really not enough. Very impressive hasn't had an impressive year and no one else really has a lot of players like you know who were kind of protagonist in, in South America World Cup like Vargas. Not even on the the the roster. They still have the likes of Gary metal on ease law and Beausejour as I mentioned. So, you know, the same suspect, all they're, they're the only thing now that they're all lot older and a lot less impressive. So I do think that this group has enough wiggle room for for Chile to make it out because they're just tough there chilly still high. I, I do think that they still have the tough mentality that, that it takes in order to be successful in the Copa America. But I think that the, the, the this lion is getting a little old of the teeth aren't there anymore. Yeah. I agree with you. I. Like that. The teeth aren't this out there in the line, although in Vidal he still has the teeth. He's still got the except all. But dole on his own should just be a team. Over the dollar should just like construct, his kind of secession of chili and Bill team just like really dangerous looking players and he's he's he's sporting an excellent mohawk these days. I mean he's just looking more terrifying than ever so that counts for something counts for something. You know when you look at the other three teams in this group.

"But yeah, I mean, I think I think Peru is the maybe the more sound choice, but I dunno I'm feeling a spicy Venezuela. And they're having obviously, so many of their own issues that maybe this is the kind of thing that, like unites team and they make a run. You never know but I'm going to say Venezuela, second Peru third group, our group, B Orgeon Tina, the true nemesis of the world, Colombia Paraguay, and Qatar. So, of course, if you don't know Copa America invites to non South American teams and Qatar being one of them Japan, being the other in group c so groupie Argentina Colombia, Paraguay could tar. I would assume Argentina is the is the favourite but. Columbia, always make things difficult. How do you how do you see groupie going? I think this is a typical argentino group of death again if, if there is such a thing in the Copa America. I, I think you have to put you don't have to put our tina's favourite, but I think that. As all continue to be bully bullish on messy. Despite every kind of situation proving that that's not good idea, a when it comes to the national team in messy, but you know, he did have, I think, as I was, you know. Tooting about when I thought Celona was for sure gonna take the, the lead off of over pool. Wrongfully messy has had a stellar season fantastic season. And I don't think there's anyone out there on any of the teams that is anywhere near messy in terms of performance this year. So it's really open. And I think messy is the one player of the most. You know, the access to grind when it comes to cope America, I just remembered distinctly I think it was last one where it should allay one penalties where he made his penalty. And then, you know, the rest of kids weren't as fortunate ads, you saw the look in his eye when his is that to me, spelled like I am surrounded by idiots like I do everything. And no one here can follow up. Deliver at the same level as I'm living. So I think that the I think the opportunities wide open for for him to be the star scope America's. Okay. I don't really see anyone stepping up. And but, you know, I think Argentina is strongly in transition more. So I think there's, there's always that gap of, you know, are, you know how to sunset the people who are probably not gonna see another ruled Koper not gonna definitely gonna to World Cups and how to usher in those who have never seen a World Cup. Right. I think those are two extremes and Argentina is a little bit more on the stretched outside of that versus Brazil words like, well, a little bit more the middle or sort of still couple people have seen a lot of World Cup will probably be at the next one in a couple of people who are this benched, I think a little bit towards the little bit more towards the center Argentina's a little bit more stretched out NS think that's a little bit trickier, especially the defense Argentina's been struggling with defense ever since Arnold the times of ya'll. In Baltar Samuel ward. That was a tough defense to watch. I actually think I mean, I think it's going to be Argentina. And I think it's going to be Columbia. I'm not sure what the order is, I think Columba's in very side. Fucking Garcia apart. I think that I'm very I think HAMAs is a player that has magic with Colombia, I think, Quadra toe has that magic with I think that this is one thing that does have is the players to jive or connects and perform when they put on Columbia jersey in ways of don't necessarily perform off on the club level. I think that, that would make a difference America. How do you what do you make of Paraguay? Where are they at right now? I think the more the I think, has a lot more tradition right now than they do have depth. I think a lot of people when the payer while in South America and they, they think about her competitive, they're going back to those rookie Santa Cruz days, which are, you know, awhile fan. Yeah. Long since over impaired. Why has it made the World Cup since Ronchi Santa Cruz days? And so it's, it's you gotta if you're gonna be like, if.

"Right. We went from World Cup in two thousand fourteen to Olympics right after that. And so now we're looking at American or just, you know, this is knock grander than the World Cup nor is it could be rendered than the Olympics until it's just like a, a I think the national mood is well might as well, have it, right? We have the infrastructure in it's our turn to bag kind of thing as opposed to, like, all, yes, this is our, like there's redemption on the line because I think we lost, you know, it was okay it wasn't acceptable loss. There isn't like, you know, fire to win because this isn't the tournament tends to have fire except for Brazil Argentina. So might only, you might you might hope for this whole tournament. Is that like? I don't think it's gonna be a I don't think it's going to be no good on the easy on the eyes. But I think that there could just be a lot of pent up. You know, we're tired of being down on our selves. An and like I think when Brazil looks at Argentina and Argentine Brazilian across the field or just to be, like this is like, we've got to get this. We gotta get him. This is like so more matter of pride. And I think that can happen on all kind of all the primary matches so much all these teams which I think, is what make America amazing for the locals, but, like kind of not a turnament that is very appreciated outside is just. Intense, intense rivalry that exists between any given country in South America, and the other side there by Brazil Argentina Uruguay Chile. Peru, all of these played teams and players have a have a grudge of some sort with each other. And I think that, that is the kind of thing that makes couple merica could make go America really awesome to watch. Because I think that if, if you get the right match ups at the right moments I could see, like, you know, a four to Brazil with like nine players on either side still on the pitch. You know that's the kind of thing that I think that's the unfortunately that's cope America at its finest. You know, if it if you can't get beautiful games, you gotta get least entertaining ones. So that, that sounds that sounds enticing. So what we're going to do now for this topic. We are going to run you through the three groups make our predictions for who's going to progress out of those groups, and who's going to go on and win the whole thing. Now, if you're unfamiliar with the Copa America, even I had to remind myself with Philippa how this works. You, you like the World Cup or Champions League the top two teams from each group progressed, but since there's only three groups that means that the two best third place teams also progress. So we're going to give you our predictions for the top two teams from each group, and which we think are going to be your two best third place teams let's start with group, a Bolivia Brazil, Peru and Venezuela Philippa. Give us your thoughts. How you feel about group a. I think all that being said, I think Brazil has must qualify in first of group, a Bolivia only has teeth when they play at in Bolivia on like Everest. So they need all the altitude. They can get to squeak out a one zero win against the side like Brazil Argentina. And they've never qualified to the World Cup or they haven't recently and so outside of Bolivia. I believe is harmless Venezuela has kind of ups and downs recently. It's it seemed like provincial. This on a little bit more of a rule..

"It's been awhile since Aleta American team has one World Cup. But, you know, they just go to cope America to just like Duke it out with each other versus. I think the euro is where like coaches are trying out the new generation and kind of ramping go for the World Cup. That's coming in. So this is a very different type of championship. And I don't think this is the type of ten championship tends to favor the like let's get them out and see what they got. You know if you look at players that are pretty exciting like pocket. Aw, Dovid narrows and Richarson. I think they're great. And I think they're going to grow it, their you know into into very, very impressive players in the future. But right now, if you're gonna put him out there against, you know, the, like the Chilean Vidal and, you know. Like the defense anymore for most issuer. Maybe they're not gonna shine because they're just going to be like they're just me haunt hunted down all game. They're going be beat up on. And so. Dovid does not have the frame that would withstand Vidal in his elements. This is not the Dolly Barcelona in Barcelona, the doll just like clips, his nails Copland Copeland. all gets gets real. Yeah. This is where it goes down. I mean that's so fascinating right to have. I, I think so, so many countries around the world where it's like, yeah, you use your your, your whatever. Turnament the euros in Europe, the Concha calf the Gold Cup or you think like, oh, this is a breeding ground for the future. You're really testing for that, next big stage. But Copa America is like a whole different beast. Or it's like sneak a whole different mindset going into that battle then classier World Cup battle a battle of land example, this is what the lesson Brazil won was Fezzan. Seven was mostly comprised of players who play in Brazil, which was also a little bit like Brazil's. Right. I remember that has some times treated cope, America's a little bit of a b tournament, when we were better days in our lives. But we want against beat Argentina three zero but we're looking at Rubio Vagner love. Judo Teesta, Daniel Alvis. Was was playing off or barsalou sevillia. I believe at the time. So like these players were mostly, like, either homegrown. Or, you know, just recently moved to Europe. So I think it's like cope America has a lot more to do with Bertha Dora's, which is also really groggy. And like a Neo there's a lot of psychological effect ago come into play like, you know, case in point River Plate in Boca couldn't even finish the Libertadores final energy Tino, because it can stop fighting outside of the stadium. So that's the kind of thing that cope America is. And I think the team the players that tend to sell are those that are, you know, used to the the bumping grind of the of the net local leagues. I think we've talked about it enough. Let's, let's transition into a little bit of Copa America, talk, which, and I'm curious. The Copa America. Can obviously you can watch it here in the United States, but it's not it doesn't even receive a fraction of the publicity that something like the World Cup. Does. There was so much hype about the World Cup being in Brazil in two thousand fourteen and like, you know, the home of beautiful soccer, and this and that. And the other thing you know, we're not getting any of that publicity here. What is the kind of hype level within Brazil of the Copa America being hosted there? Is it like guess let's devour this, we have to win or is it is it also kind of like let's see. Okay, we're excited, but we're not edge of our seats ill. I almost forgot the Cup America was in Brazil. And I that was in Brazil a couple of weeks back to. It's just that it just feels like a little bit of like a backwash tournament. I think Brazil has I think there's a little bit of just like the recent sporting events in Brazil..

"You have liked to see Lucas speed one called up in neymars place, instead of Willian, I think Lucas could be that player said that would be like this is my chance to shine. I we've spoken about this in the past back when neymar was an under Brazil's under twenty team. He was the third best player there. It was Lucas arguably the best player Oscar, you know, somewhere in China and they was like a like a flashy third. And so, you know, Thakur is a sport that just like some different kind of growth curves that are very different than name are naturally, outpaced, all of these still think that he's strides ahead of either of them to fight right now. I think Lucas has, you know. You know, I think he has kind of a, a point to prove to, to Brazil to taught him to himself, right? Because again like he had an amazing season at him. But I think he's moved to Tottenham was a punting from his G right tissue, like we don't need anymore. Go somewhere else. I'm sure. Yeah. I'm sure that felt like a step down to him when he went PS g to taught them, what now obviously pretty happy made the final and was a star along the way. But yeah, absolutely. I would have liked to see him. I think given the season he's had certainly deserving. Who I mean I feel like this is been. They're kind of raging debate since last World Cup who's your striker that you go to Gabrielle Zeus, or Roberto for me. No. So this is a tricky one, because I think if the last match played against Qatar, which started off really well, and then just ended kitchen started like started messing with the lineup. It just fizzled out. I did not I was a little concerned about which is going to do because. I think it's not even either of those, it's going to be Charlson interested in because he's been having a great Brazil run every time you call them up he delivers and he started Richardson center. He's had J sues on the right and name are the left ending switched. The name our went out, and he put an Everton who's probably one of the promising players in the Brazilian, but he didn't play very well against Qatar. Just never good sign. And so I'm a little worried about trying to play. Jay Seuss on the wings. And you know Jesus was, you know, very solicitous in the last World Cup playing the positions that you told him to play. But you know, not really, I don't know. I don't think just played the way he would have liked to. I think he's doing it again. So I actually think he's going to start with Jews Richarson and I don't know. I just point probably William. And. Because coaching is gonna play mid so that's, that's that's where he's going. And then he'll probably take out Richarson put in Bobby, who you know injury saw. And, you know, I think it's I think, Bobby is the odd men out in the Liverpool. You know, starting lineup of strikers. And so also, not a lot of faith in him, just point. So I don't know this not impressive not impressed. How much do you hope to see? I mean, that'd be very interesting, if we're Charleston starts, especially kind of in that. Yes. Central striking role. I mean so that's young player getting experience how much how much are you looking to the future saying, yeah, I wanna see players like Richarson and Dovid net is getting playtime. You know let's start building towards the next World Cup versus playing the more experienced guys now. Yeah, I think that's the right direction. Unfortunately, I think there's a couple things go against it. Which is again, I don't think the Copa America is co America's not the cradle. The future generation, this is not a I think more often than not the Copa America. Unlike the euro. Yeah. The euro is where like Latin American teams. Go get go. Pick your unfinished business. It's like after the World Cup. Everyone's kinda like some of them are down. Sometimes, you You know know. it's been awhile since Aleta American team has one World Cup. Yeah, I could see him easily getting getting the axe. I agree with you. We were so high on Brazil before the World Cup started in two thousand eighteen and you're right in the sense that they obviously, they lost. And it wasn't like it certainly wasn't like two thousand fourteen but they never really liked dazzled along the way. And so here we are, you know. Soon thereafter, and it's hard to be like, you know, you kind of feel a little burned in a way where you're like well is this is this team better than it was two years ago or a year ago? I don't I don't think so. Obviously name are is out, you know, that could be a whole topic unto himself. But we're going to kind of leave neymar loan. He's got. Clearly, some legal issues pending, which are not really, we're not really equipped to talk about wouldn't want to trivialize those kind of issues. I think you know that aside his head space at G hasn't quite been right. I mean he's facing a series of bands for various outbursts, and things like that. And I think he's just kind of gotten a little bit away from the joy of the game, but he's not going to be playing this in this Copa America. So we can kind of put him to the side, and I almost wonder if that's a little bit in Brazil's favor. We can get into that. But you look at their other stars right? Philippe coutinho. He's, you know, we talked about that on our Barcelona Champions League episode where it's like his, he's not thriving. Particularly will Brazil be an opportunity for him to reinvigorate himself. I hope so I think he's an amazing player. I'd like to see that you mentioned Roberto, for me. No, obviously just won the Champions League fantastic. He was in. Injured though for a lot of the season. And Gabriel j Zeus just won the Premier League. Good for him. But he was also kind of a secondary figure that season went on. It is. I agree with you. It's a little bit hard to get super hyped on this team. But I'm very curious to see I'll be honest with you when neymar was going into this Copa America. I thought this might actually end kind of poorly for Brazil with neymar out. I think it's an opportunity for other players to step up without that pressure of like I just need to get the ball to neymar, and I think that could actually maybe bring a little life to this to this team. What do you think about that? Yeah. But it's just not a very I don't know. The difference that losing losing a World Cup makes. Suddenly, these kind of a few of the pieces are just a lot less, shiny right now. I think you if categorically for the for the listeners that have been with us for a while they're going to be surprised when I say that I would argue Allison is probably our best player, right now both technique wise, but also like head space and kind of winning mentality. And you know, like with many other sports and other teams winning mentality is important. And no nowhere. Is that more important than Brazil? I think one of the things that resent sock a lot about when it comes to prison. Soccer is the world co the next World Cup starts the minute after this World Cup ends. Right. So we are only nine hundred days away from the next Cup currently. And I only see Allison as the with the head space, too, with a winning mentality that we wanna have by the time we get there, because Tadic working Alison, great, the only one a few exceptions, Daniel office, sat out for the longest time came back. I I like that. He's a captain. I think he has, like, we need someone to little bit more Grizz grizzly as our captain, to just keep a mostly, you know, kinda younger not very physically imposing team, still very competitive, but, you know, side out and also you know, a less than impressive end for PSG a pretty much, you know, failed to lose because they just couldn't flaunt the leader..

"You know what's his name all Chevy. Prince Tang is landing contracts Barscelona. I see, no reason why volatile wouldn't be will on land. You know, like a high risk contract that some team that just doesn't really have that like center four because it is a little bit of a dying position. Right. So I don't know. Honestly, I would not, you know, short don't against him. But you know what Barcelona can have them if they want replacement for Tiven, and they can tally and keep him from just United pretty please? But in a good segue here we got. We got Bala telly at Marseille. He's clearly gonna take French league by storm where different player is known to be king. And that's neymar neymars from Brazil. Let's talk about our first topic, which is the state of the Brazil national team post World Cup, two thousand eighteen the rebuild the kind of rebirth, the transition, however you wanna put it. I wanna hear Felipe your. An expert in all things Brazil national team. It's going to segue nicely into our topic on the Copa America. But let's get into how you see this Brazil team shaping up. Are you happy with the direction? They're going, well, first of all, seamless transition from Balata into Brazil very It's I. I. Yes. Incredible. I would say that I am not as bullish on Brazil, not nearly as bullish as I was heading into the World Cup. I think in general, and I think this is a thing that I want to show my hand too early. But I think there's a theme here of, you know, teams in the Copa America that are just coming from, you know, negative results a lot of these teams hiding early bowel outs at the World Cup in. So I think Brazil earlier not coming into World Cup. Brazil just was writing wrote in incredible high. We feel we felt you know, just untouchable. And, you know, I think having lost to Belgium Brazil, you know, Zil bled. And since then, I just think this, this illusion of like the side that you had put together that was, you know, bringing back, you know, Brazil soccer the way it was meant to be it's just became a little too, too unrealistic. And I think that if you now look at Brazil, not only as the club. The team itself. But also like individually, it's just a team of not winners losers but they're not winners. I think if with exception of Liverpool crowd, there are no, they're no, no impressive, winners, this year of soccer, Brazil side, and that's very concerning thing. And so between a less that, you You know, know. I think an honorable bow at Belgium Belgium, but just not a you know, it's just a oh Brazil, I guess, wasn't that captivating. And then just like a season where no Brazilian really made their Mark a not, I don't I don't like where we are. I think Mojo wise. And I don't think she is doing making the right calls. I think as a matter of fact, I think, kitchen is, you know, as typical in Brazilian coach fashion, a little bit on the ropes I if he doesn't win this one, I don't think he'll survive, you got to imagine I mean, Brazil hosting the Copa America that, you know, it's not like hosting the World Cup. It certainly have a pressure. And if after the World Cup performance. And if you don't win this one. Yeah, I could see him.
