"Talk about perseverance. Fred wears it up. I actually saw the other day that were trying to map out a journey for it and they come up with two paths life but the other one was more likely to give the results they were looking for now trying to choose which way to go option to better data probably much more dangerous so i don't know way went. They have. they started moving. I don't know the answer to that. But i do know yourself started moving cooks. They've put six point five meters on. Its odometer worked now half the price and so what they did. Was they rolled forwards. Full beta four maters then one hundred and fifty degree turn on this pictures that show you the fact that within the wheels the turn because with a six wheeled rover each independently controlled you. Can you can just turn on the spot. So they turned hundred and fifty degrees and then drove backwards to two and a half meters. So it's now got six and a half meters on the clock exactly as you said it will be worth the price. But if they drove backwards rewind the odometer. I suspect that doesn't work. In positive cases probably a lot of its travel will be back backward. In fact i remember. I think it was opportunity outta damage wheel and for a long long time many years it could only go backwards to drag the wheel. That were stuck one other bit of news is that's my interest you know. But they've nasa has announced the the name of the landing site because these when you land rover united side. And it is called the octavia e butler landing and octavia e. Butler apparently was an award. Winning american science fiction writer who died in two thousand and six very young. He was only fifty eight so about thanking on. She was only fifty. We have some really amazing straight to Fred we've got wind Jawara Straight. which I believe I started remember the meaning of it. We're another one cold wilander. Now I think that means swamp. And we've got another one cold straight. There will aboriginal words from the local each other we're language. Near they've been. Used here and a lot of street signs might up with local aboriginal odd as well. Capturing the local culture I think it's terrific. Yes. When when I lived in Coonabarabran, of course that to is it's gum or Gummer I would. Do. You know what it means couldn't about Auburn. I do not, but I'm going to think it's something to do with mountains. Even more appropriate than that. It's inquisitive person. Can that's perfect. That is perfect for. Great. Yeah. So, just continuing the story we then we then spent some time in the snowy mountains and there still a little bit of snow and then down to the coast where we. Despite the fact that the Bureau of Meteorology Forecast, doom and gloom weather conditions for the whole week, it was perfectly fine. The whole it was great. Yeah we'll got them up north instead and I'm very sad to say that we were talking about the cropping around here recently and how this just crops, his files, the consent, and they just needed a couple of weeks of dry weather to get the crops in. Sadly a couple of areas of been absolutely decimated by hailstorm. So that's very, very sad news indeed. Hopefully that can get those crops off because they desperately need a good season. We haven't had one for three or four years. Let's get onto our first topic, Fred Monarchic Better Strategy and history and information for ages. We got another one called while and right now, I think that means swamp and we're dead. Another one called mulch straight. They're all Aboriginal words from the local culture the wiradjuri language. So yeah, they've been used here and a lot of our street signs are made up with some local Aboriginal art as well. So, you know capturing the local culture. I think it's terrific. Excellent I was to It's a it's a great picture. So. I suggested that you had to look at it because you mentioned the haze of pollen. If you've got that much pollen in the air. Then you very likely to see this pollen corona. What causes it is the fact that the pollen particles. Effectively they're all the same size and concentration of similar sized objects, small microscopic objects in the India. Produces an effect similar to something. We call the diffraction grating, which is a device that we used to split up the light of stars and other objects in in astronomy to look at their spectrum, the rainbow spectrum and a diffraction grating is characterized by the fact that he's got all these as the name implies it's. Essentially a grating regularly spaced. Baas through which light passes until anything with regular size or regular spacing, you're going to get diffraction effects and that's what this pollen corona is in yours. Actually your photos probably the best one I've ever seen. Yet, really good. Shows the despite Yo hay fever, which is the downside of it. You've done a great job capturing your Koroma. Well I did get a simplified I last year during the the draft and when all bush fires were happening around Australia and we were constantly shrouded in smoke and the sun setting..

"But we begin with cannibals in the sky and a new paper published on Thursday by our old friend Professor Grind Louis. So this is a paper that appeared in nature. It's by my student Jen one WHO's here at the University of Sydney, we're undertaking a survey of object in our Galactic Halo. So we have our Milky Way Galaxy with roughly two hundred, billion stars, but we're surrounded by this thing to halo of other stars, and in there, there are groups of stars to galaxies and things called globular clusters. And what we know is that the gravity from the Milky Way is tearing these various objects apart. So we see whole groups of stars, but we also see these signatures of what called tidal streams. So these are group's stars that have been pulled by gravity and stretched and stretch stretched until they basically a long thin piece of spaghetti across the sky. And so we have been using the anglo-australian telescope. In Kuna Coonabarabran, we've been using the fantastic facilities there the two D., F. Instrument. That's two degrees of field. That's right. Two degrees field, and they are four hundred fibers. You can collect light from four hundred stars at exactly the same time, and so we can basically measure the light from the stars. We can measure their chemistry and also their velocities, and we can use that to try and put together the picture of how our Milky Way grew over time we know that our Milky Way Star of small and has gotten more and more massive as created smaller systems. So this particular paper is focused on one stream in the Constellation of Phoenix. So imaginatively known as the Phoenix Stream and we've mentioned the properties of that stream. There's a couple of surprising things number one we looked at from the properties of the stream that it's a stream of globular clusters. So this is a bowl of around a million stars that has been stretched out and it's been pulled apart. There's about one hundred gobble classes or two hundred classes in halo of the Milky Way. So then not that surprising. But what we found is that when we looked at the chemistry, the chemical signature of this global koster that's been pulled apart is different to all of the others. So I should explain so that when we look at most of these because we measure how many chemical elements they have in for an astronomer, what we mean, how many elements are there which are heavier than hydrogen or helium this something we call Metro city. So for an astronomer, every element heavier than helium is a metal. And we find that Gabu Costa's have some metals and that tells us about the environment in which they were formed. They went form from pristine gas from the Big Bang, which is just hydrogen. Helium there must have been some other things going on and other things being star formation and stellar evolution, which polluted the gas with these heavier elements, and what we find is that there is a minimal amount of chemical elements we see in globular clusters. So they always got some of these heavier elements in their stars. So again tells us something about where they were bored and how they were born. Except for this one that we've now found and this one is really really deficient in its chemical elements it seems to have a lot less. These heavier elements seems to be a lot more hydrogen helium. So to his distinctly different to the Gaba classes, we see today. And so we have to ask ourselves whoa where did this thing come from different? What's its origin and what we think that this is the cost of the time forgot that it is a leftover of a population of because that used to exist and have been disrupted and what we see now is a little bit like the last Tasmanian Tiger in the zoo right this is the last of its kind it's being pulled apart there. There might be one or two others out there but their populations are over they played an important role in the build up the galaxy in the earlier epochs but now that time has gone. Looking. At the past perhaps as it was as this overwhelming were the milky way moving in is another example of cannibalism Oh yes. Yes. So what we know is that the galaxies cannibals in that they consume smaller galaxies and one of my colleagues. Rodrigo. Barter at Strasbourg Observatory he was a PhD student with me and back in the early ninety s, he found evidence of this Dwarf Galaxy in the Constellation of such areas which is being torn apart, and it was the first sign that our Milky Way is still a cannabis still eat in other galaxies and grow in through eaten and what we found in the intervening now almost thirty years is many many. Signatures of things being disrupted by the Milky Way with stars being added to our own galaxy, and so it's an interesting question why we're pretty certain that the son was born inside the milky. Way We reason confident that we don't know where the sun's parents came from because the sun is just the next in the generation of stars. We don't know if sons parents were born outside of the Milky Way brought in, and so they were essentially created billions of years ago a final thought and it may seem obscure given what we've been talking about a couple of weeks ago we had a young person from the University of Melbourne She's just turned nineteen. When she first came on the sign show, she had a poem for me I had no idea it was coming about Cecilia Payne. Boskin. And this was the first woman to get tenure as a professor in physics at Harvard and the woman who'd been a Cambridge where you've been. And had worked out how it was hydrogen. That was the basic material from which these galaxies are formed quite amazing that someone with that sort of background. Time when in the nineteen twenties when women weren't necessarily recognized as people who could be accademics at any level at all had worked out this. Amazing. This thin guess formed all this stuff. Yes. Yes. Science does have a horrible reputation of being dominated by white men and I'm a firm fan that there are minds around the world that have yet to be tapped in many countries that don't have an education system that allows them at. That's where our secrets of science are. GonNa come from. You'll be left field I'm looking forward to it. Congratulations on the new paper. Thank you very much. Professor Storm may get on Lewis at the University of Sydney. The paper was published in nature on Thursday..

"Today on conversations. It's Stan grants story. This is from a conversation. We had in twenty thirteen. We asked listeners recently which episodes they wanted to hear again and listeners voted overwhelmingly to hear this one. You might be aware of the reason. Four corners special that Stan made which was very powerful and moving. He's become a bit of a national treasure. With. Stanton and I had this compensation seven years ago. He just returned to Australia from Beijing oft along period of working overseas. During that time Stan was a TV gentlest and an anchor for CNN, reporting from some of the world's trouble-spots. Standard, saying some of the best and cruelest of the world leaders right up close. And he'd seen the results of intractable conflict in the Middle East and in Northern Ireland. Stan grant is unfailingly at Bain. Articulate and will briefed on screen, and you might be inclined to think that he would have to be the product of an upper middle-class background. Perhaps they'd be a private school in did. Not Quite. Has worked very long road to get to where he is now and the first thing he wanted to pick me up on when we spoke was the whole private school. Thing that I just mentioned. You just described my children actually might. My boys are now upper middle-class background private school educated, but that was far from my. The doing this thing with authentic about this dead Oh. Don't you know about absolutely and I? Know nothing? Absolutely nothing but I'm always bang onto vk. have become very old now. When you start saying things like you know, realize how good you've got it. Box and right around to all year. He's this in mind. I still don't think they really believe it. Auto them stories about you know when I was growing up and you see them going right. Okay. This, horror when you told them, we didn't have wi fi are. I've. Nineteenth Century. Let's talk about this. Nineteenth Century Donald, Judd, which was actually more than the mid sixties when you whereabouts. Did you grab stay? I grew up everywhere. I was born in Griffith in New South, Wales in nineteen, sixty, three, my father, that was basically where my father was from, he was from the Reggie people for waste in new. South Wales. My mother was Gumma Roy woman from Coonabarabran. Her mother was was white and blond hair blue, eyed German stokes. We'll very mixed bit. I grew up there, but life was spent on the road for me Richard. I mean we moved constantly I mean constantly..
