"From the leaks perspective, the pandemic can not be overlooked in that a lot of the problems I believe stemmed from contracts at resigned before the pandemic, assuming the cap was going up on the projections that they had. And then it got smashed with a steamroller. And so the cap has been flat. People say flat cap and I don't think they take the implication of what that really means. There's no growth, but the contracts are still on the cap that you already signed before the cap flattened out. that's why I think the league will be really reluctant to do anything because they'll say, look, after next year, the cap is going to go up X number of dollars, then X plus number of dollars. And they'll tell you that there will be more flexibility. Yeah. The one thing that I'd like to see, the one thing I'd like to see the one I think I don't think you need to change the system because that's a far more involved, longer negotiation. I've been a proponent to take one salary and be able to franchise cap that salary. So each June 20th or 25th, because free agency starts on July 1st, each team designates one salary for that year that comes off the books. So it might be Connor McDavid this year. It might, but then Leon draisaitl comes up for a contract and he leapfrogs him, so it might be Leon draisaitl the next year. It doesn't have to be the same salary all the time. But each June 25th, you can take that salary and put it into your franchise tag. If you do that, that gives you another 12 and a half $1 million of capital. Owner, if it's McDavid, owners can do it or not doing it. Doesn't matter. Up to them. It still keeps the salary floor in the same place. It keeps a salary upper limit in the same place. But you're allowed to take one salary and take it outside the player pool and put it in this franchise tag. To me, it opens up space. It opens up flexibility. And it doesn't decimate the system. I like it. I like it. And Carlo and I have gone back and forth on a luxury tax. He's a proponent of a luxury tax. You know, so then you enhance revenue sharing. So it balances the haves versus the have nots. For me, that gets a little bit more authenticated. And then I also ask, okay, well, what's the give back that Batman is going to request? You know, to alter the system to that point, you know what he's going to ask for. Okay. Guaranteed contracts. That's given. All right, buddy. "Of the Eileen best player or just most impressive player, but I get what you're saying in terms of that's kind of what the Ted Lindsay is supposed to account for and this is different, but ultimately I struggle with most valuable for a lot of the reasons you outlined the biggest one for me is all these are the most valuable if we're going most valuable is just going to be the three players that we list in the vesna, would it not be? Well, I guess the counter point to that is that they don't play all the games, right? So we already have an issue with, say, Connor McDavid playing 25 minutes a night. You know, he's not on the floor, like an MBA player for 90% of the game, but it's closer to 40, 50%. So there's already an issue there a little bit. And then you look at goalies, it's like shishkin last year. I put them on my ballot. I think I had a third because it was just absurd what he did. But it was hard to sort of leap all the way to second or first based on, I don't have in front of me how many games he played, but I think it was 50 something. Where it's like, okay, well what happened in the other 30 games? So it's not the goalie's fault, but I think that's a factor there, because you're totally right. I mean, let's face it. The sport is rigged to give the most value to the goalie, whether that's negative value or positive value. So they always certainly should be in consideration. And then on the point of the Lindsey, I think that the question is saying there's this huge issue with the heart. But I wonder if big picture if we think of all the awards and the sort of value us as a hockey world, it gives them.

"I brought to you by our good pals at Boston pizza. So thank you to Boston pizza Connor McDavid. Scores his 29th goal of the year. So the question is an obvious one rate. The oilers have 48 games remaining. McDavid has said all along that's growing 50 wasn't, you know, a huge thing to him. Of course, it's a career achievement. I mean, corn 50 historically is been a milestone for so many great players. It looks to me like Connor McDavid is going to get 50. It's not going to be easy. He's got 21 to go in 48, but does it feel like a tap into you or slightly longer than that? Unless he leaves his sticks outside the Edmonton winter and a freeze and crack and break. He scores virtually every game. Yeah. I mean, of course, the numbers don't tell you that, but it's like, it feels like he scores every game. I think he's, I think he's just so good. Like he does, he scores now a little differently, too. It's not just, you know, where he blazes by everybody and although he does that lots of times too, but he does. Yeah. I'm not going to say tap in because 50 such a big number, but he's got like a three footer. Yeah. And look, I mean, there wouldn't be many players who play professionally, let alone in the greatest league in the world in the National Hockey League who give up at varying points of the game. But the oil can be down two, three, four or nothing. And McDavid will all of a sudden go pop pop like he just, you know, he finds a way to turn games. So I'm with you. What about the Minnesota wild, man? I mean, they've won 6 straight as we record episode 26 here, Thursday morning. What's most remarkable? It's not that they're winning games. It's how finally tune dean evason, the coach of the Minnesota wild has to this club defensively. I think I saw this morning. They've given up 6 goals rate in 6 games. And the goaltending has been good. I'll give them that. But that's got to put a smile on the coach's face, right? When you're that sound defensively, and then the other parts of your game start to come together with. Well, code chips love the defensive side way more than the players, which is, which is always the argument or the debate back and forth. And it started the year flurry had a really tough goal. They had just brought in Philip Gustafson from Ottawa. Nobody was really sure what he was going to be like. He's won 6 straight, I think, right now. He's been terrific. What's interesting to me is they're one of the teams you can look at and say, their identity is this. And you can define it. They're physical, they're fast. They, when they're playing well, they're suppressing shots for the most part from the middle of the ice, and they just don't give up a lot of goals. I find it really interesting drugs.

"Blackhawks Edmonton is now 58 16 and four when both Connor McDavid and Leon draisaitl each score in the same game. I'm Joe brand. You're listening to the Blackhawks postgame show taking you up to midnight tonight. After the hawks losing skid now unfortunately stretches out to 8 games, but this was a different type of game tonight. Blackhawks taking on a very good, very talented, very fast Edmonton team. And they get within a goal of them for the second straight night. Not only that, there were a few opportunities for Edmonton to just let this game go away and just kind of put it to bed, but the Blackhawks didn't allow that to happen and nearly tied it up with 13.6 seconds left. Let's get to the highlights of tonight's matchup at the united center after 20 minutes. We had no score, the oilers outshot the Blackhawks 14 to 6, we thought we had a goal. It looked like Zach Hyman had netted the first goal of the night. However, the Blackhawks challenged it saying that Hyman had cross checked Seth Jones into the Blackhawks goaltender of arvid soder bloom. That challenge went rather was overturned successfully, good challenge by the hawks in a remain to scoreless game Edmonton at a lot of good scoring chances they had a power play in that first period. They had 7 shots on goal in their very first power play. It is just a very talented team overall, let alone with a man advantage. So we moved into the second period and Edmonton didn't waste too much time. 54 seconds in Leon draisaitl picked up his 14th goal of the season. Darnell nurse with the primary assist, his tenth of the year in nurse also playing in his 500th career game. Later on in that second period, Ryan nugent Hopkins would take a stellar feed from yes he pull you Yahoo, pull jarvie, excuse me. Behind arvid solar bloom's net and just fed nugent Hopkins who came cruising in from the right wing and made it the two zero lead for Edmonton. So a moment right there in the oilers continued to pile on the pressure offensively. But the black clocks had an answer for that and it was thanks to a shot from Jack Johnson, although it didn't end up being his goal. Hyman will clear to the line, kept

"Kind of gave you the idea that this was going to happen and then act accordingly because I think it would be really fascinating kind of case study. Yeah, and like talking to him, I think the biggest reason why. I mean, partially, he's just special. There aren't many guys that see the ice like him, but I think another big part of it is, is just love for hockey. He watches so much hockey. I put this in the piece. I mean, this summer he built another room in his house specifically for watching hockey because his wife doesn't like watching hockey as much as he does. He joked. He's got join the club. He's got three TV set up so he can watch the games every night. He watches his brother in Calgary. He watches all those games. He loves watching, Brady Katz games. He's real close with him. He loves watching he said he watches pretty much all of McDavid's games because he just likes watching him play and trying to pick up little things from the best player in the world. He just really enjoys playing hockey and when I started watching hockey and when I say that he's not like studying, this isn't a obsession. I must get better. I'm gonna go home and watch it. Mark stone just loves hockey. That's what he wants to do. When he goes home, what do I want to do? I want to watch hockey and I think he's been that way his whole life. He talked about he would after his games ended when he was a kid. He would just go get dressed and then go sit in the stands and watch the other games because he just wanted to watch the other kids play hockey and see what they did and just a very curious way of watching it. Everything he's watching, he's wondering why guys are doing things that way. Oh, can I do it? Can I put that into my game? And he's like, I'm never going to be able to skate like Connor McDavid, but there are certain things he does that I can pick up on. It's just a very curious love for the game of hockey and it translates into someone who is terrifying to try to get past.

Well, Jonathan Connor McDavid is, of course, only one player on this Edmonton Oilers team. Who else has really been contributing to this playoff run so far? What else have been the keys to their getting as far as they have? Well, that's just it. And we talked earlier about how one player can't really overcome a decrepit team around him. This is the farthest thing from a decrepit team. The oilers have some weaknesses, but they have just superb tear once at the top end. I mean, it starts with Leon draisaitl after McDavid. Ordinarily, during the regular season, dry Seidel and McDavid were on separate lines. They're playing together now. The reason for that primarily, aside from the fact that it has worked, was in the first round, Leon draisaitl was taken down by Mikey Anderson and he's been playing on what we believe to be a sprained ankle since. They had to have them at the wing because you have to skate a lot more at center than you have to skate on the wing. And he's ridden wing for Connor McDavid before, and their chemistry superb. There may not be a better player in the offensive zone than Leon draisaitl in terms of just pure passing and shooting. They've got the kind of supporting cast up front. They haven't had in ages. Guys like Evander Kane, who came in at mid season, Zach Hyman, who assigned the summer. And Ryan nugent Hopkins, who's been there forever, but really hasn't had any peers. Now they've got three of those guys, and it's made all the difference. Mike Smith, their goaltender, you know, he's 40 years old. He's a fantastic story. Coming into the playoffs, I was a little bit skeptical of Smith. He gets very hot and very cold. So I've seen him be very good and very bad, but he's been very good for most of this playoff run. He's bounced back from some really difficult place. You know, he kind of gave away game one to the kings in the first round with an atrocious giveaway. And he came back and responded with some of the best hockey he's played in Edmonton. So you really have to respect his resilience. But the other key I'd say for the oilers has been the coaching staff. They changed coaches at mid season, something that GM Ken Holland has never done. They brought up Jay woodcroft, who was a very up and coming minor league coach. They brought up his defensive coach, Dave Manson, and those two guys have worked wonders. The oilers are a different 5 on 5 team under Jay woodcroft. They're much more competitive. And Dave Manson's kind of earned a reputation as a defenseman whisperer because of the way he's developed the oilers prospects. He has found new levels from not a pedestrian defense, but one that's really not that remarkable, especially with Darnell nurse fighting through injury. He's found contributions from guys like Brett kulak, Tyson Barry, players who were regarded as somewhat one dimensional. So a lot is how to go right for the oilers to get this far. And it's a big story beyond Connor McDavid. This matchup against Colorado for the neutral hockey fan at least is absolutely mouthwatering. I mean, you have two of the league's most exciting and fastest, most skilled teams squaring off against each other. And they treated us to an old school shootout of a game in game one on Tuesday night with abs hanging on to prevail 8 to 6. Jonathan, what do you think the series will ultimately hinge on? When I look at Colorado, the player who's frightens me the most with due respect to Nathan McKinnon is kale macar because will kill macar has done this season. I don't know if he's going to win the Norris trophy, if not he'll be one or number one or number two. He's a phenomenal player and to me he's every inch the equal of McKinnon. Those two are the key point for Colorado. The differences that Edmonton has extreme skill up front. So you look at guys like Nathan McKinnon. And Gabriel lambda skug, the oilers can go toe to toe with those guys. Nazem kadri. You look at what Colorado has on defense, guys like kale mccart and Devin taves. Edmonton doesn't have anybody like that. Darnell nurse is the closest piece. And he's playing through injury. He's not a 100%. So to me, it's really going to depend on whether Colorado's defense can tip the scales of the McKinnon McDavid battle is going to be fantastic, but that McCarthy is saying that's something that Colorado has that pairing at something Colorado has that Edmonton just doesn't have an answer for that I see on paper. You mentioned McDavid and McKinnon. In those two guys you have two former number one overall picks, generational talents, arguably the top two offensive players in the league. What's also somewhat similar games as well, right? Both guys, it's just all about speed and skills simultaneously. Does this feel like a potential rivalry of the future sort of centered around those two superstars? Yes and no, because it's easy to look at McDavid McKinnon and kind of go, oh, well, this is the new Crosby Ovechkin. The problem there is when it was Crosby and Ovechkin, it was Crosby and Ovechkin with McDavid McKinnon. You have to throw auston Matthews in there too. Who's very much in that same weight class as a heavyweight offensive forward. But the cool thing about McKinnon and McDavid is like you said, they both go out with speed. Matthews is an unbelievable goal scorer. So as much as he's in the conversation and kind of makes it a three way battle instead of a two way battle, he's a different kind of player. And we'll see if Edmonton Colorado stick with a power versus power matchup where McKinnon and McDavid are playing each other all the time. I think Edmonton is going to try and get away from that as much as they can. They like to double shift McDavid. But that kind of speed, I can't think of a forward match up to that compares. As a rivalry, I think it's somewhat lacking because they're not playing each other in division play during the year, which makes it a little harder with Crosby and Ovechkin. You got more regular season matchup, so it was a little easier to.

Once again, it's the lead starting 5 available everywhere that you listen to podcasts. Okay, here's today's episode. This is the moment where we're all going, this isn't a special player for now. This is a special player for all time. We're just over two rounds into the Stanley Cup playoffs and already, the NHL's brightest star, Connor McDavid, has put in a playoff performance for the ages. And he's still asking his shoots, his score. Today, reporter Jonathan Willis joins us to discuss how McDavid has somehow taken his game to yet another level. The records he's breaking and minds he's blowing, and what his continued ascent means for the NHL. To be able to watch Connor McDavid doing what he's doing, that's a treat for anybody. You don't have to like the game of hockey. Just turn it on, see Connor McDavid and understand that what he's doing is incredibly special. He transcends the sport. Plus, what to watch for as the rest of the Edmonton Colorado series unfolds. From wondering, I'm out of skeletal. It's Wednesday, June 1st, and this is the lead. So, Jonathan, Connor McDavid, and the Edmonton Oilers lost an absolutely wild high scoring game one in the Western Conference Finals on Tuesday night. But I actually want to start this episode by going a little further back in time, specifically to last week and McDavid's dramatic series clinching overtime goal against the Calgary flames. First, can you just walk us through that play as best you can remember? Well, I think the whole play is actually very kind of a microcosm of that Edmonton Calgary series. It starts with a Darnell nurse dump in. And then Connor McDavid was instantly in there with speed and he's so good on the four check. Noah hanifin, who's an excellent defenseman for Calgary is feeling the pressure he throws the puck along the boards where Leon draisaitl picks it up. It's a terrible thing for the opposition when you have those two players McDavid and dry cycle on the ice together because they're so hard to defend. And then he just split, lindholm, who was trying to get back to the middle to cover him, Matthew chuck couldn't get over in time, and then of course the Connor McDavid shot. Series winner for Connor McDavid. You know, it's funny, they have the brand new arena and it kind of got the disparaging nickname of the library at times because it was so quiet and it's the loudest I've ever heard of. And only fitting that it'd be Connor McDavid, the series clinching goal. McDavid, he instantly starts bolting for center ice pumping his fist like huge smile on his face. He's machine like in his stoicism, his professionalism, you very rarely get an emotional reaction from him and he was just pure joy. On the ice afterward, his exuberance he bubbled over, it was maybe the happiest I've seen him in the National Hockey League. And the oilers are moving on. What a beautiful play by McDavid to get open. And allowing that passive dry sail into the most dangerous area on the ice. You mentioned that Conor McDavid is known for being sort of robotic, not one to show a ton of emotion or give a lot of insights into how he's feeling in press conferences and things like that. What did we see and hear from him after the game? I really didn't think it was that differently. I thought he was kind of back to normal after the game. Yeah, hard to put into words. With element to me. The guys did a great job of hanging in there all night. You know, he kind of joked about riding his teammates coattails because until the overtime goal, he hadn't had a huge impact on game 5, the deciding games he'd not the way he'd controlled the final games against Los Angeles or the way he'd been so dominant early in the series against Calgary. He was talking about how great Leon draisaitl had played. He was back to deflect and credit others mode, which is his standard operating procedure. He was amazing. And that's all you can really say. It's hard to really put into words how amazing he was out there. In every game, every single game he so I think he was mostly mostly recovered and back to good hockey man Connor McDavid mode by the end of the game. It's probably like, did I just black out there? What just happened? I was pumping my fist and going crazy. Yeah, exactly, exactly. That's not how we behave when we're Connor McDavid. And Jonathan stepping back for a minute. Can you explain why that goal and that series win for the administration oilers felt so monumental to hockey fans in general, I guess, but also to Edmonton hockey fans in particular? Well, from a hockey fans in general standpoint, I'll start there. This is the best hockey player in the world playing the absolute best hockey of his career. It was a signature moment on what has been an otherworldly playoff series. And that makes it a huge story for the NHL. It makes it a huge story.

"connor mcdavid" Discussed on The Hockey PDOcast

"Welcome to hockey PDO cast. My name's in Michigan. And joining me is my buddy Jack hunt. Jack, what's going on? Tons of hockey to watch. Tons of hockey to watch, indeed, we're recording this on Sunday morning. We just got to watch three amazing game 7s last night. There's two more on the way later today. The plan is we're going to work our way through the series that have already ended. So we're going to discuss some of the important takeaways, things we saw in the games. Just try to spin it forward to help preview the round two matchups and kind of identify some exploitable strengths and weaknesses that people can look out for when they're watching these games. We're not going to talk about the ones that are happening later on tonight obviously because by the time people listen, the results of what happened. And so we'll save those for later on in the week and I'll cover them in a future podcast. But let's jump right into Euler's kings. I feel like that's kind of the logical starting point for us because I'm personally still kind of riding this high of just getting to watch what Connor McDavid did last night for my money. I've been watching hockey for a while now. And just given the circumstances involved, I think that's about as well as you can possibly expect an individual player to play. From really from the third game from the third period of 5 game 5 on, he pretty much just pitched a perfect game over the course of the final 7 periods of the series. And what you get is the best player in the world playing at his very best on the biggest stage. And that kind of theater to me is what makes sports so cool. So I don't know, not to sound too corny, but that was that was about as fun as it gets, just watching all that play out. Yeah, and it's not as if the king's played particularly badly. I think they played just well enough to look like the Washington generals to McDavid's Harlem globetrotters. That kind of thing. Well, certainly for the series, game 7 got away from the little bit, especially as I gained one along. I think the dam kind of broken eventually, it was a bit too overwhelming for them. In terms of McDavid was basically out there every second shift. And they just got no real risk or pre from it..

"Player because he's getting people to tune in data heim ducks games and care about it and buy his jerseys and follow both him and the team. And I think every NHL team should be striving to get players like that because that's what really helps move the needle. Yeah, well, also that's what an elite player is. When you watch an elite player, whether it's in a practice or a game, your consciousness or your awareness, your awareness of what's possible expands. So if you're watching, let's say Crosby or Patrice bergeron, well, you're seeing how it's possible to play hockey correctly by the book in almost every circumstance. So in a way, your mind has expanded, but then you watch whether it's ruby hints or Connor McDavid or Trevor ziegler. And then you see other things. But that's what elite players do. They redefine what's possible and what's practical and what you can do on a consistent basis. And then the whole game moves forward. It's not just the easiest thing. You imagine McDavid there. Every time he slices through three defenders for a highlight real goal, I post the video of it and you see like weird reply guys pop up in the mentions and being like, oh, the defenders should have taken the body there instead of pop watching and it's like, well, yeah. Thanks for the tip, but while that might be technically true, it's also easier said than done. And there's a reason why he's the best player in the world, and we should celebrate this accomplishment because it's really cool. So I don't know. It's always weird to me when people focus on certain things like that and latch onto it as kind of like a defense mechanism or whatever rather than just acknowledging how cool of a play I was. Well, once again, I think it shows limitation how you understand the game because when Crosby or sorry when McDavid skates into a one on three with the puck, and he feels like he has a decent chance of coming out of the pile the other side with it. He knows that there's a forearm too off the puck. So actually, he's doing his teammates a big favor by taking on that one on three. So for.

"Our listeners how the hockey world reacted. Yeah, torch went viral with that one. You know, he likes saying those headline screaming things, which is great for us because we like that in television. Funny, I don't look at McDavid as a whiner as a guy who complains a lot. Remember, Sidney Crosby early in his career, he was much more of a complainer towards referees. He was such hyper competitive. But yeah, I don't think maybe the McDavid stuff is more postgame. Maybe it's more talking to the media. And like you said, to not draw a penalty when he is such a physical advantage on everybody else. But I get it. LeBron, in Shaq, in the NBA, they felt the same things. Shaq was the biggest and strongest. He got filed hundreds of times in the game. They couldn't call it every time, so they try to call it as much as they thought it was possibly fair, you know? And so the best player is going to get filed more than anybody else. That's true in basketball and it's true in hockey. So I do think there's some I still can't believe what you said not drawn a penalty in the last two postseasons is just unbelievable to me. And I think that will change and the league should have his back more. And overall, I actually think McDavid does not come across as whiny to me at all. Like Gretzky, McDavid can be a bit bland off the ice. But he did respond to tortorella and it was sassy. He said, I guess I just got to shut up about this. What are your thoughts on what we've seen from Connor McDavid as a personality in the NHL? Yeah. You know, I don't demand a lot for athletes in that regard. I think of a few of the commercials he's done some of them really good. But again, someone who a young kid whose talent and we mentioned being a prodigy just outweighs his maturity and just just post adolescence. So so young at those ages, 16, 17, 18. And you're getting those accolades. And people are saying you're the greatest thing ever. And you're trying to balance that. And you want to be normal. You want to be like everybody else. And that was always weighing Gretzky's goal and Bobby, or as go I just want to be one of the guys. And I don't want to be special. But everyone's telling me I'm special. And so but again, again, he seems like a bit of an introvert to me. And he needs his space and needs his time alone in a way because otherwise the energy will get sucked out of him. And he wants to say that for hockey. He wants to be able to do what he did against Winnipeg and do what he did against the rangers. That's what brings him the most joy. That's where he's the most comfortable. Tiger wood was always much more comfortable with his hat on than with his hat off. He's 20 years younger with his hat on anyway, but when his hat was on his Nike hat was on, that's when he was most comfortable. And for Connie McDavid, you know, it's only has a CCM stick and helmet on. That's when he's most comfortable. Personality traits aside in the end, all greatness of Hall of Fame players are measured of whether they want a title or not. And we've seen guys another sports from Ernie Banks to Dan Marino to Charles Barkley, who never got one and it's always the missing item that we have to point out on their resume. It took ov ten playoff runs to win one. So in the end, which of these paths is McDavid on? Well, that's a great one, man. I still think in the end, he finds a way to get it done. I don't know if it's with this current Edmonton group. It's still I wouldn't say a long shot, but certainly less than 50 50. But like I said, I think it's less than 50 50 for just about every team this year. Could you get the right brakes and get the right match ups? And find his way through. I do think it's possible. I think he's that great and dry settles that good. But you know, do they have the goalie to be great for two months? Will they make the right trades at the deadline? Will somebody step up in a positive way? You're still 24. You should have ten real good years left and like you talked about at some point, even before that contract is over. He'll look at the team every year. And if he sees any three to four year dip, that's when he'll either demand his trade or get out and move on to somewhere else and try to position himself to get to a place.

"Spent this entire time hyping up Connor McDavid and it might surprise some of the listeners to find out that he doesn't lead the league in points or goals. His teammate Leon durai Simon does. He's scoring at an outrageous piece. And Edmonton is regained the lead three to two. That's drive titles 200 National Hockey League goal. And boujee, this to me seems like the best offensive tandem we've seen in the league since Yara Mira and Mariel lemieux with the penguins in the 1990s. I want to know first if you agree with that assessment and also, if you think it's possible that at the end of this season, McDavid and dry side could both finish as MVP finalists like yoga and limb you did as teammates back in the day. Yeah, I really do think they can finish top three because they are different dry saddle is probably a better pure goal score. McDavid is shooting more this year than he ever has, which I like to see is close to four shots a game. His shots are going up. So I think they're going to I can't see any chance outside of injury that they don't finish one too. McDavid's on pace for 58 goals. He's never gotten 50 in a season 41 twice. He should get 58 this year. That's about his space. Maybe this pays will slow down. He'll get maybe 52. But I think he'll want to get it. He should get a 150 points this year. But when you watch their games, I mean, he drives them in every way. I can't imagine someone voting dry site ahead of him for MVP. It's him, man. And he's the one. He's the fuel injector. All right, it feels like Edmonton in the hockey world have been waiting for McDavid and the oilers to have this kind of season for a while now. Why is it taken so long and why is it happening now? Yeah, just roster construction is difficult. You can draft guys, you can bring them in. Some of it's obviously smart and wisdom and knowing how to build a team and understanding the balance of building a team and what you need and how you allocate money. It's hard at a hard cap era. You can't make mistakes. You know, they gave Darnell nurse a lot of money after, really, what will be probably his career year last year offensively, but they had to keep them. He's such a great athlete and he moves so well back there. So but that could make it tough. McDavid makes a lot dry settle makes a lot. Nurse makes a lot and there's only so much you can do. And then it's hard to get free agents obviously to come to Edmonton and then to keep young guys there. You got to overpay. So that's going to be a drag. And that's going to be a problem for these non destination cities. It'll be tough. You've got to kind of time it out right. Otherwise your windows are a lot smaller than a Boston and other places where players want to go to want to live and want to play. So it's going to be tougher for them. That's what I'm saying. I think the window is now, and they should probably empty the bucket to go for it this year and give McDavid all he can now because this is the time. This might be the time, but when we're looking long term, the oilers have McDavid locked up until 2026. He signed an 8 year $100 million contract in 2017. And I mean this with zero disrespect to the people of Edmonton, who were so kind when I was there during the bubble, very nice people. But I have to ask, is it good for the league to have their best player in a smaller market way up north in mountain time zone? No, it's just not. You know, it would be better if he was in New York or Chicago or Philadelphia. It just would be, you know? That's just the way the world works. Same with Matthews. You know, I wish Matthews was in LA and I wish McDavid was in New York and that's just the way it is. It's definitely better because it's face at ESPN when we show Canadian based teams. They don't rate as well. Although I got to tell you, that Edmonton buffalo game that I called in Buffalo, that was on ESPN+. Me and Ryan Callahan, AJ, alesco. That got a huge number of streams that night. So maybe it's time to rethink that that maybe we got to give those games a shot on American television, ESPN, TNT and see how it goes. As we talk about big market small market stars stuck in some of those markets, it's impossible not to mention that Wayne Gretzky, the oilers other singular star eventually left Edmonton for Los Angeles. I'm disappointed about having to leave Edmonton. I truly admire all the fans and respect. Everyone over the years. Do you foresee a scenario down the line where McDavid leaves for a big city? I do. You know, it's the careers are long. Some guys hang around, obviously and play everywhere. Ryan gifts laugh is going to do it nanhe. But of course, he's in Southern California, the ascent of the leave, the greatest weather on North America, the climate is where he is. So he's not going to be a lot of incentive to leave. But yeah, look at the impact Wayne Gretzky had on hockey in North America when he went to LA and how that just the domino effect for kids playing. You see now on a back of hockey cards born, Los Angeles, California. That didn't happen when I was a kid. And so that's the impact maybe, especially Matthews, I think, as an American kid and with his diverse background, could really have in the states. And but McDavid weather, especially if it was for a Florida, even again, you don't need more fans in New York and Boston and Philly and Chicago. But especially if he went somewhere in America that you in Seattle. He would Seattle will have a little bit of a hockey boom as it is, but someone like that would come in, it would have a huge effect. All right, again, McDavid and Gretzky, you can't help but compare the two. How would you say that McDavid has filled Gretzky skates in Edmonton? I think again, with his shy, quiet demeanor, which obviously, Canadians love and hockey people tend to tend to love to in value. It's a value to show humility and to be a little quiet and not be above yourself. So that alone is going to is a good place to start. And then just his sheer talent in how he's different than Gretzky, you know he's not the same person while still winning art Ross and MVPs and piling them up in a similar fashion and in a different league now where there's a lot more depth and more teams and the goalies are better and the fitness levels off the charts and the league is very young. So yeah, I think it's pretty cool that he is able to kind of carve out his own thing. I don't see him as in the shadow of grass. I don't see him as that being a pressure on him anymore because he's a man who is almost a made man at 24 career wise, and now he's just trying to get to his own next level for his own personal satisfaction. It's just about self satisfaction to him. I think more than proving himself to others, I sense that's the case. I don't sense a burden on him. You say that hockey values humility, but the other thing people in hockey value more than perhaps anything else is the Stanley Cup, which is the ultimate currency for a team championship. Our own John tortorella, the longtime NHL coach had some comments about McDavid on the point, which is ESPN to talk to studio show where she hosts Thursday's three p.m. ESPN2. And basically he said he thought McDavid need to alter his game to win in the playoffs. And towards also called him out for some of his complaints with officiating. Yeah, and he complained about it a little bit. He wasn't getting the calls. Quite honestly, and I hope I just shut up. Don't talk about it. Now, I think it's worth noting that McDavid has not drawn a penalty in the playoffs the last two years. But you're usually a host, but I know you've got opinions too. What did you think of tortorella's comments and most importantly, explain to.

"Think most of us saw against the New York rangers two weeks ago. Coming close. Magical goal. By Connor McDavid. Wow. What made that goal specifically so unbelievable? I think it just had that perfect image, especially the still shots of being surrounded by four professional hockey players. And at that moment, the simple sentence, he ended up scoring a goal. If there were no players, it's hard to score a breakaway goal against NHL goalie. They have the advantage. Break away goals during games, goalies make more saves than players score. You know, just like in a shootout. They have the advantage. So that alone, if there were no rangers around, the likelihood of him scoring is less than 50 50. But you put he was surrounded by four professional hockey players. And not only beat them, but then beat the goalie as well because that's the thing. There's so many almost solids. I've always said on SportsCenter when I was doing that the last few years, we should have a segment like almost top ten of all hockey plays. Hockey has so many of those moments. It's hard to score. There's not as much payoff, unfortunately highlight wise. So when you do pay it off like McDavid has now really twice this year, but against the rangers, especially that at one point he was in the middle of four professional hockey players. And somehow beat them all and scored the goal at the end. Our colleague Jeremy Shep got to ask McDavid about that goal, and he was typically understated about it. Would you mind describing your own words, the goal that tied it? Yeah, I mean just kind of fumbled the puck up eye and puck came out of the zone. So I had to take it out and just did a little loop and we forgot to get inside and I just tried to catch there guys coming up, then just try to get through the guys and make a play. McDavid's teammate and fellow star Leon dry Seidel summed it up in his native German. Is there word in German that you can use to describe that goal one word? Unbelievable. And I could use more words for it too. I was hoping for more syllables, but that's pretty good. So Gucci, McDavid scores is unbelievable goal, and then just a week later, he turns around and scores another goal of the year, Canada against the Winnipeg jets. He's done it again. Toast to coast and this game is time. Are you absolutely kidding me? So I ask you when you see these goals and you think about the best players you've seen in the game, where does McDavid rank with the way he's playing right now? Yeah, to me, he is right there at the very, very top. That Winnipeg goal, I thought, in some ways, was even even better because that whole game had a playoff atmosphere. It was like a Canadian playoff game, almost like a mini tournament within the regular season. That was like what he wants to be involved in comes springtime. Because that raises the best to new levels. That's when they're faster. That's when they're quicker. It's when they're stronger when the game has their attention. That game had his attention. That's why he wants to play in the postseason. That's why I want to see him in the postseason because he'll be faster in the postseason, Mike Trout will be stronger in the pro season, and that's why we want to see the best in the postseason because those games have their attention. All right, after the break, we will talk about the Edmonton Oilers chances this season to hoist the Stanley Cup and what I believe to be the central crisis facing hockey these days does the NHL need to do a better job protecting its stars like McDavid. So does this sound familiar? You've got one device that lets you catch the game live, another that lets you stream your favorite shows. You're watching sports highlights on your phone, and you've got your neighbor's best Friends log in for the good stuff. Well, I want to tell you about a simple way to get all that entertainment that you love without any of that hassle. And it's a great way to finally get your TV together. It's called DirecTV stream and it brings your live TV and on demand favorites together like never before. So you can watch your favorite sports, movies and shows all in one place. That means no juggling remotes, no need to buy another device ever again, really. And the best part is this. There's no annual contract. So get rid of the clutter and the confusion and get your TV together with DirecTV stream. You can learn more at DirecTV dot com that is direct TV dot com. Compatible device required, content varies by package. All right, bougie. We mentioned that Connor McDavid is off to this awesome start to the season, and the oilers are too, as a squad, they are 13 and four on top of the standings in the Western Conference. And it's been a long rebuild for the oilers. They have won the draft lottery three times since 2010, but they've made very few playoff appearances in the last couple seasons. So what are you seeing from Edmonton so far this season and how far could this team go? Well, after the during the one of the games early in the season, I sent Kenny Holland to text. Kenny hall in the GM of the Edmonton Oilers. Correct. I said Kenny, you're a cup contender. He texts you back. You think so? When you're a GM, you see all the warts, right? How can I make this team better until the deadline? That's all he thinks about. And so, you know, obviously, they got to make a couple of moves. And he knows that. But this is undoubtedly the best team at McDavid has been on in his young professional career. After a great start, Dave tipp into the coach experienced. He's been there before. He's seen it all. He coach and offensive team in Dallas. And he had to go defense in Arizona. He's done it all. He knows how to win. So it's really going to come down to what is available with a deadline. What are they will in the mortgage? Because again, this is the McDavid window. You know, they definitely need some help on the blue line. They need some bottom 6 scoring depth. I just don't know if it's there right now. They'll be able to shut down McDavid and dry Seidel probably at least limit them and then can the rest of the group pick up the pace. But certainly when I look at the teams around the league, I really think that league, there's a huge amount of parity. There's multiple teams that can win the cup, like maybe ten to 12. But I really do believe the Edmonton Oilers,.

"John bucci grass, Gucci mane, the king of chicken parm, how are you doing? I'm doing great. We are underway in the NHL, still kind of quiet in the sports world. You know, we're still kind of in the weeds with football footballs that behemoth, which eats up everything in his path. This is like warming up for March through June this year. Right. We're warming up, but the hockey season is still going on and there's some pretty incredible stuff happening. And that's why we have you on today, because you are the perfect person for today's episode. Yes, I am. We don't even need to give a reason. You are. But like me, you're a die hard puck head. And I know you're also well versed in explaining the sport to folks who aren't as steeped into the hockey world as we are. So our mission today, John, is to get those hockey curious folks up to speed on a player who is doing things that I don't think we've ever seen before. And I'm talking about Connor McDavid, captain and center for the Edmonton Oilers. Before we get into who this guy is, I want to start by you finishing this sentence. Right now, watching Connor McDavid play hockey is. It's exhilarating. You and I have seen millions of games. We've seen millions of players, sometimes there's a sameness to it. It becomes wallpaper and but he is just absolutely exhilarating. Here's McDavid centering pass and I just went through rebound score. There's not a lot of athletes, again, I've been doing this 25 years at ESPN, 32 years in my life in terms of a professional sports watcher, but I've been doing it since I was 7 years old as well that I can remember. So and for someone to do this, you know, it's Barry Sanders. It's when we first saw Dominique Wilkins dunk in the NBA. It's just a speed and a power and a separation from the rest of the greatest at what he does, that is just exhilarating and just mind-blowing. And it captivates almost on a nightly basis. What he's doing is so brilliant that if you've been following sports in general and maybe if you're not even the biggest hockey fan, you've heard the name Connor McDavid. But I do think people still might not know enough about him. So let's just start with the basics. Who is Connor McDavid and where did he come from? Yeah, he's a pretty much a quiet Canadian kid. You know, he's reserved, not terribly comfortable in his own skin off the ice outside the rink in terms of talking to the media. He's all business. He just wants to play hockey and play it obviously at 24 years. He's in the prime of his life. Those are the prime hockey years, 18 to 26. People don't realize, I talk about when Bobby ore went flying through the air with his Stanley Cup overtime winning goal in 1970. And when Wayne Gretzky scored his 92 goals, they were in their very early 20s. I call it the intersection. First you have your ultimate athletic ability, then you have experience, then for those few years you have that experience where you still have your youth and your athleticism to its 100 level. And then you have experience as well. So the little intersection that oval for a while is when you own the game. And that's where he is now. You know, because it's a young person's game like it is with football, they start very young. So he's got, you know, he's got 400 and 24 games, played. He's always like, he's almost at the 500 game mark and he's 24 years old. You mentioned he's 24 years old, which just seems wild to me because he seems like he's been around our radar for a while. Remember he was granted exceptional player status by hockey, Canada, which meant he was allowed to enter the OHL draft at age 15 a year earlier. And by the time he entered the NHL draft back in 2015 the Edmonton would like to select with their first pick from the eerie otters, Connor McDavid. What was the hype like around him? North America, the world loves prodigies. We like chess prodigies. Musicians who were prodigies, the 12 year old vinyl and this is the best in the world. And athletically, we love prodigies. We knew about Tiger Woods, well before he came onto the scene, especially those who were really into golf. So obviously Connors are prodigy. You know, it plays junior hockey for the eerie otters. That's kind of cool. Yeah, we know this is the greatest player in the world he plays an Erie Pennsylvania because of the roles, like you said, you have to do this at this certain age. Visit this certain age, and this at this certain age, you can't be drafted till this age. But until they get to the NHL, they're still fortunately. They're still a little bit of a mystery. Because there's been a lot of prodigies who have flamed out and not worked out and for whatever reason. And maybe going to Edmonton was the best thing for him from a quiet standpoint. I mentioned his personality, I suppose, if maybe New York had won the lottery. Again, I don't think it would have mattered where he went because physically, he's such a fast twitch freak, but maybe in the end, that's how it all worked out. And that's been good for him, but he's been 7 years now. He's in the NHL. And it feels like he's just really bursting onto the scene where sports fans in America. And again, we've done a good job on SportsCenter at night. We have been kind of espousing Connor McDavid's amazing goals, because we show highlights. And we show in progress highlights. And when I was on 11 o'clock at night, that's a second period in Edmonton or first period in Edmonton. So we've kind of we've been the one that kind of showed these freaky goals. But now I feel like this is his moment where he's really bursting onto the scene. So he's just hyped up prospect. You mentioned he's having a moment now in year 7. How do you describe the first 6 years of his career in the NHL? It's been unfortunately, like Mike Trout and baseball, you know, there's no post season success. And what it has happened with sports and sports consumerism and sports watching by the public, as we've really become championship centric. But for him, he just hasn't had the postseason success yet and obviously ultimately raising that Stanley Cup over his head, which is the ultimate man cave picture, all these players want in the basements of their palatial homes. So right now, it's just been regular season individual mayhem. But not really team winning playoff and moments. And now he's gonna have his shot. He's this is the best team he's played on. And so this is McDavid's year where can he win around or two rounds? And then advance in the spring. That's his next step. So how would you describe McDavid on the ice? What does he look like and what are his superpowers? He just again, he looks like Gail sayers and his rookie year in Chicago, Barry Sanders, through the Detroit Lions, where he just makes those guys look foolish with his stop and start his change of direction. His acceleration and certainly LeBron, how physically throughout his career, he was just obviously stronger and bigger and fast, really fast than everybody else. And McDavid was not really going to have records, unfortunately, because Wayne Gretzky played it in the greatest offensive error in NHL history. So, you know, 92 goals and 200 20 plus points. We're not going to see that again. But in terms of relative to the rest of the field, pure talent and pure video watching because Wayne never was that. Gretzky was never a physical freak. He wasn't the fastest guy in his own team. And so he didn't do it that way. He did it with the ultimate brain. Like no one had a brain like wanting Gretzky. McDavid, you can see it with your eyes. He's faster. It's like the old playground thing. I'm picking that guy 'cause he's the best. And that's the best way to talk about sports and it's most simplest form. You've given me the perfect segue here because I think the reason that most sports fans know McDavid is that this guy seems to break the Internet every other week now with these insane goals that combine his speed, acceleration is controlled, stick handling that def coast to coast movement. And the one that I.

"Of dollars because he's an idiot so entertained like he's lucky he didn't get caught with the gambling's that'd probably ended his career and now he's getting suspended for cova like fake cards. Just listen each their own. But you don't even have to get it so why why cheat it doesn't make sense to me this speaking of that. Because the new rules they have this season. Unvaccinated players cannot use anywhere other than team hotel practice facility and the arena. They're barred from everything else. So maybe right so it's inconvenience but he could still be an active player not lose twenty one games of the season and all the money so just so strange bella and do you think. He's actually betting on his own games. I don't think he is i really. Don't i think i believe that. These guys are smart enough not to do that. I would give them the benefit of the doubt or that. But who knows sammy. It sounds like he's pretty dumb guy so who knows all right so now. What do we think about the olympics. So we have. The nhl players are heading back to the olympics for the first time in years. What do we think is the best thing for hockey. These players wanna play for their country outside of winning the stanley cup on so they might say that. Winning the gold medal for their t- their country is the the top thing in their careers. So the fact that they weren't allowed to time was unfortunate for them and for us watching. You wanna watch the best players in the world competing on that level and united states. We're going to be up there and we're going to have a great shot Tj oh she hasn't been named with team yet but he will be that guy's a star he's leading with washington right now so you get to play with ovechkin everyday. So that's a great thing but oc is a star for us so we should be good paying. Olympic team. Lessen canada's going to be the leaders. Russia will put up a good suad. You'll find a sweden in here and there but usa. I think we really great shot. We were younger squad. Ozzy patrick kane. Our best player in my opinion But you guys like oshii. Great defenders john. Carlson who's also in washington so we'll we'll be good wa good good run but you never know. If canada had mckinnon they have sidney crosby. They have connor mcdavid. That's going to be murderers row of of athletes coming out of canada. Yeah canada always has a really fucking great team. It's amazing how many stars they can put on there. And yes i agree with you. I think that the olympics is a great thing. I think they should take the break in between in order to give them that players love at fans love it. It's fucking amazing. Speaking of all right. Let's move to the final thing. We're gonna talk some standings here. We're gonna get your predictions. We have some clearance standings here and so We have the florida panthers leading the eastern conference. We have saint louis leading in the western conference. Obviously it is early after just a week but what you know from the off season coming in. Obviously chicago loaded up. Obviously you have biggest coming back. You have edmonton What are you thinking..

"Build yourself a resume to be considered a great in hockey and being the number one point score beautiful. Great that's one of the best qualities gonna ever need but for you to just get shut down in the playoffs. I think is a really bad mark on that resume and probably will dock a ton of points more than anybody should probably argue for making them if that makes any sense so koso- because he said a few things so one you said just these top five like without a cup whatever right how the thing where it's like. What did you say about him. Being top five goals. Scoring great but Cup right that's what you said. Actually there was top ten okay. But he's still a top ten point score of all time if you're the tenth overall in points scoring in the league ever regardless of status if you scored the tenth mountain most amount of points that right there is a hall of fame thing. One hundred percents famer. I believe he's a hall of famer. Ace can he be considered one of the great one. What did not obviously gretzky. But can you be considered dressy esque without a cup. If connor mcdavid especially at twenty four is continuing the way that he is in yes. You also said his resume. Let's take lose resume. He is to heart memorial trophies again. This is all before twenty four years old right but we're twenty four most valuable player on his most valuable player for the team twice in his six years. I think having six years to time all star three time. Art ross for most amount of points and ted lindsay three times for most outstanding player. Yeah yeah 'cause need for years regular season he's a regular season machine and also in his career playoff he has twenty two points. Twenty one games. It's not on him is isn't championship.
