"Record all right so You've you've touched on a lot there. And i'm and i'm just going up front say that i'm sure i got a lot wrong on the radio. Show the other day or on the podcast. I'm sorry with tommy. Because mark down to me and he said you know. I'd love to come on love the update you because obviously we were winging it and look here is my t been my perception in and you have changed it and i've done a lot of reading over the weekend on the obviously Changed it i you know i remember growing up. You know not only being a ball boy that one summer but going to this tournament because i love tennis i play tennis. I had a lot of people in my life that were into tennis so every summer. You know we hooked it down to sixteenth and kennedy for at least a night or two to watch the tournament and i remember the tournament from going from a clay court tournament with a lot of south american. You know players to the hardcore Hardcourts tournament in in the eighties that started to attract all. The guys is a lead up to the open. I i remember going to sing. Becker and seeing lendl so many times and seeing connors and seeing mcenroe and other players during that era and then agassi was a mainstay. You know as it was chang if i recall and others you know during the ninety s but the truth is mark in recent years and i think it coincides with sort of tennis. In general. my interest in tennis has waned. I used to be a massive tennis fan. I can go back and tell you about you. Know super saturday at the open and eighty four with the three matches that went the distance. You know with cash and lendl and martina and chrissie connors mcenroe and the thing ended at eleven thirty. At night i was up early. Sunday mornings for mcenroe borg eighty and eighty one. Like i remember all that stuff. And i was so into it but i'm not as much anymore and i think the country is a whole. Obviously it's not nearly as popular of a sport. So i apologize for not being totally up to speed and when you said it's the fifth largest tournament in the. Us is that prize money based everything. Attendance prize. Money quality of field. It's it's all. Yeah there's the us open which is a grand slam. There's three what's called one thousand of them. Which are miami indian wells and cincinnati big amounts and then what are the one five.

"What proportion of world number ones have been left connors mcenroe nadal a muster v last was left he wasn't he wasn't willing to ball not real real should have been with newcomer. Lefty david the pulse. I don't think you all's go-round but he wasn't well number one. My question being is it one of these things will be think of. Is this huge tennis advantage. But actually the steps in quite berry tout oversee a lot. Fewer of them yes. That's what i mean. Is it greater than the proportion of them in a tennis. I don't know i mean i. would i think of it as an advantage. Because of its rarity and the angle of attack can an an all sort of thing. A cable mackinlay. How make mcenroe. Righty how does that affect things definitely failed like it was an advantage to the fewer than seven. Slim's probably. yeah yeah. I think probably okay. We all righty. We are aren't we. Yeah is that where we're going wrong. I was very strangely for no reason and perplexed my coach very much. I was a right-footed ice skater. You guy do do everything else. Sorry a left-footed. Ice skater stone soup. All over again. And i will say much to my dad's distressed throughout my childhood easter me. Nobody would want to go into dinner date with me. I eat left-handed. I hope my knife and fork handed which i grew up thinking the most catastrophic etiquette era of all time. I've been told our pickup of guitar left handed. I just pick it up and then put down again. Went not trying to edge with tennis racket which eg turns out. I didn't know that right. But you're righty yes at everything everything right okay right well i mean the problem with this format is we will never know we will never ever choose frommatt that we can. I guess we should probably quote in a dull himself here with his. If doesn't exist oh let's just end. The phone will will need to create that after every suggestion much. We'll come back to you for the closing line if if if thank you adult for helping us out with us lighting those tennis matt. What would you like to submit. I'm gonna go back to what i think might be the loss law years. Maybe the end of the loss lawyers nine hundred nine ninety seven. David i mean to be fair. I in my life. I'm quite happy to to go back to ninety seven year again. Something nights seven well david. Susan's life yeah. I probably got good recollection of this. Because i'm out because.

"You can't take eighty nine pound Chris. Evert ORT Tracy Austin. Chris was a little bit more physical. But you can't take those those players out and then have them transformed and had them placed Serena just wouldn't it wouldn't even wouldn't even look like something that could happen. Obviously if Tracy Austin was playing. Today's gave her jeans for the game. Does change so tracy awesome place today? She's a different player. She trains differently. she hits the ball way harder. She's using the equipment so so. I think it's harder to do that. But you're right. I mean I think the biggest difference with one of my favorite things to do in general is just watched Djokovic. Highlights. Just watch him. That's we we need to. We need to acknowledge that right is my favorite is is my guy. love Look but it's so fun that and I think that's part of the thing that I love about Tana's is I love dogs and I love veteran. I don't dislike anybody in the in the top players. I think it was different. What it was connors McEnroe at boring. You pick the favorite you rooted against the others. We'll what's to root against any of those three. I mean they're Ju and and throw Anne Marie and there and throw on rink in there. They're all joyous in so many ways but Jovic is my guy and and the thing that I love watching Djokovic is how much court he covers. It's it's it's not comparable it's just it's the Yvonne Lindow was the was the fittest player of his day. And and got to a lot of balls and you know Makarova's obviously physically during gifted even if he didn't necessarily work out too hard and Agassi was the same way you know physically gifted in workout that heart disease early. I mean they. They couldn't get two balls the guy can get to. I mean it's it's just a different thing you have to hit however many winners you have to hit to beat Jovovich. Those guys certainly with the equipment they were using they never could have gotten him off the court ever. There's just there's no Oz ability for hitting the ball at good enough angle. Hard enough to to to be Djokovic with without modern equipment and and being physically you know dominate the way the players are today. I mean He. It's just a different. It's a different level. I think what's your what's your definition of great. I feel like I mean it's part of the great fun of this but part of the fundamental problem this whole discount. We haven't even agreed on a definition and we have this sort of hollow ill-fitting frustrating word of greatest adding even Patty defined that. It's a great. It's a great point. John you know when you when you talk about. Or what do people end up doing? They ended up talking about. Who won the most Grand Slams right? I mean it just it just comes down to some sort of simple number and I think at that went golf with Tiger Tiger has to pass Jack Nicholas. Most majors to be considered the greatest. But but even Jack Nicklaus will tell you he was gonna Players Tiger Woods in his prime so so what is greatest? I mean I think you look those three. I mean you know and I think the conversation really. Does you have to start with those three. Just because of the length of time that they were so great and and you know in the fact. That game is so different. Now it's not to Knock Rob Labor your borger or any of those guys. It's just different and I think when you start with those three. How do you even you know how to even define greatness among them? I mean there's no question rough on the doll's greatest clay or player ever lived. I mean yeah. It's like his his surface is it's he owns. It owns that so so. Are you going to say anybody else's the greatest player when if you've played him on clay the doll would be the favorite would likely win? I mean it's it's so that's different but then it anybody really change sort of the the the level of the game the way Federer dead. I mean he came along at a time where where number one was was being passed around from player to player and and it was such a different a different. You know everybody was sort of trying to figure out after Sampras and Agassi what was next. And and then this guy's the one of the two or three best players and off de best players for the next twenty years. I mean it's it's lunacy and then you know my feelings about Joker Bench. I I just think he's he's taking it one more level up. So yeah you you define greatness basically by the way I look at it as sort of assume we looked at the baseball one hundred and the way people of thought about that. You a player that you want to be the greatest and then you just defined it around. You know the argument backwards. I feel like that's what people do with you know. Should we care about personal disposition and the fans say yes absolutely credit to the sport look at Rogers Philanthropy? And he's a gentleman and he doesn't get find I mean I feel like these goal post moves. Let me I mean. Actually you know what? Let's let's stay on. The you mentioned. Bill Tilden who Perhaps a best player the first half of twentieth century. Also there were corrupting minors morals. Were do we care about the constitution and disposition these mushy sort of good good guy and good woman credit to the Game Citizenship Award Type Category? Well doing care. I mean I guess it depends on what you're trying to to to define right. I mean that's that's sort of gets back to your question. What is great? I mean if somebody said to me look. Nobody has done more for the sport than Roger Federer Right. If somebody says to me that he he took a sport that was sort of scattered about and and and not only played at a level that that That had never been seen before not only lasted longer than anybody else. But also his philanthropy and also is credited sport he he brought a Cla- St ten is that that is a.

She was what a great sister mother daughter she was and then she told his story about how well in an effort to explain. How will genie took being? Christie's kid sister like she always you know was gracious about about it. Increased tells the story about one time she martina played a doubles match against Genieford and the Russian Soviet at the time Omarosa and Genius Ogle won that match and Chrissy who's highly competitive as we all had seen over and over again with sat way with her sister to Chrissy tells the story she said. I didn't talk to Jeanie for three days. And we were sharing a room and every one of us just rocked with laughter. That in the midst of this really. Sorry Day that Chrissy Tell a story like that and make us all smile. Christie's been through a lot in the last couple of years. She's lost people she's truly and And I have to say I. I wonder sometimes we get together. All of us Billie Jean King obviously is a big part of the reason. We get together a couple of times all of the oldies in and enjoy each company. And I just cannot imagine that happening easily anymore. You know I just we. We meet a lot to each other. We've all we've gone to each other's weddings and funerals and happy times and said times and I'm very glad to be. I'm honored to be a part of that community. I'm honored and Oh yeah. Genie was. Was Somebody very special? Say it just shows when you when you talk in that way there is more to it than just the bid on the court and I think I think of Sorta Martina increase when I was when I was a kid. They were The the ultimate rivalry in tennis. They they were the Balkan McEnroe but it felt more so because it felt to me at least from afar as other needle between the two. They didn't get on when they were when they're absolute top of the game. And I I I find it quite moving. They seem now so close. It's lovely it's lovely. I mean considering that they basically made each other cry like every other weekend at some in some locker room somewhere in the world because they played each other so much and so and as much as look. If I'm not going to get into a big argument with anybody says Serena's greatest player on the women's side about it. Okay that's fine you know. Let's have a beer and talk it out but boy Chrissy Martinez supported the tour so long and for so well and they treated every tournament like it was special. They weren't just looking to get a warm up before a major People counted on them to show up and they did you. Never you never saw. You never saw either one of them lose early. Have a bad day. You know. It just didn't happen back then. They they understood how important they were to tour and they also knew how much the torment to them. I think I think sometimes their respective camps pitted them against each other when there was real no true animus between Chrissy got much better publicity for the entirety of their pit. People said Martinez Shave Manish. You know she looks like she plays like a guy that Martinez had to put up with a lot of stuff. That Chrissy never had to face in Chrissy had a lot more. I remember. There's Chrissy had Lipton ice tea sponsorship and in this channel kinds of stuff off the court. Martina headline a floor lows suck deal. Janna sock deal shoes. Bonnie your own clothes at Epworth. They were giving them serve for free but they weren't paying her. You know they're both as I said I'm very very I. We're we've all been touch. We text each other ridiculous stuff back and forth. Martinez is always on twitter. You know dumping on trump in the risk the risk of of his administration daily our whatever but we all keep in touch. Tammy is like we're all on it. It's it's a very nice. It's very nice thing. I played tennis at a great talk at a late seventies in the US. I mean tense was huge. Because it had it had connors McEnroe and Chrissy and Billie Jean and Arthur. Ashe's had great American players and then it had all these cool foreigners like organised ASEAN number two love who became an American. It was a great great time. I hit a real sweet spot. I I was lucky very very I I. I understand how fortunate I was. A and continue to be by the way I happen to have very much talking to you three. Well I was GonNa say you you. "Pushing you and set others to agreed upon goal and above all the experience of that journey to me. That's the stuff of poetry literature and yes art but then there's that word professional which means offer the journeys no longer the primary reason for participation teamwork camaraderie. Even wins and losses are not necessarily surly as important as the financial report now. I have friends who have were are now only professional sports franchises and just about every one of them are pretty good. People who sincerely want to do the best thing but in business the bottom line is the bottom line professional sports a never ending conflict of commerce and art and if you think republicans and democrats trouble working together try that i just finished doing a mike lubega podcast this morning with mary carillo gorilla the best tennis broadcaster on the planet and as we move up on the u._s. open we were talking about what else better and dow and joke a bit and how nothing thing like what they've done and are continuing to do in men's tennis has ever happened or will ever happen again and she did refer to the mr jovovich as the apex predator of the three of them. These guys have now one fifty four majors among them in comparison and you've heard me says before borg connors mcenroe won a grand total of twenty six feds got twenty raf got eighteen joker has sixteen but the most remarkable of them even in this tennis generation with veterans still playing the ways playing at the age of thirty eight and the doll has won twelve french opens and counting is joke which i believe he's eventually going to pass both of them and that would be remarkable itself which more remarkable is jovic came along at a time when two guys were in the process of winning a combined thirty eight eight majors and we're in their primes and took them both on straight up and beat them so it's not just the numbers with him. It's who he beat and when he beat them all the way until he got better in a memorable wimbledon final last two i the goat conversation is ongoing immense tennis. Mary says three goats are still grazing but in the end i believe jovic is going to be the one believe it or not. Justin verlander had never faced miguel cabrera before wednesday's game aim and houston the former teammates had missed each other and previous houston detroit matchups scheduling cabrera's health but finally the two men who once constituted the biggest stars ars and the detroit tigers universe were staring each other down from pitcher's mound to batter's box berliner won the day. He got cabrera to fly out groundout strikeout out. That's matchups. Go was a dud but it made you think about the relative fortunes of these two men. Both of them are thirty six years old. Both make a king's ransom awesome and both were on the tigers roster several years ago when the lineup also included max scherzer david price j._d. Martinez and was expected to win it all but burley andrew got his ticket out of town when the tigers went into fire sale mode so did all the other detroit superstars except cabrera and now the man many consider the purest chris power swing of his generation is stuck laboring for a team that rarely wins and barely draws a crowd meanwhile burland went to houston and won a world series what what if it had been reversed what cabrera had been dealt and was batting in that former bulls houston lineup with virtual anders stuck in detroit wasting his final years on a team going nowhere where the matchup wednesday would have been the same but the overtones would be totally different. Connors was a bleep hole for most of his life old don van natta story but serena versus the empire. It's backstory and like all of the examples that they give of men tennis players. Behaving badly towards umpires are like jimmy connors jimmy connors mcenroe mackin rolling and it used to be celebrated that was there john mcenroe made a brand out of being horrible horrible and now he's sort of now. It's almost like george foreman like he's become sort of a softened version of himself. At jimmy. Connors was a horrible human being like to to to others might have been okay ah right personally but like really really awful to other players use abusive yellow referees on and just by virtue of getting older yeah became became kind of a soft and underdog version we all in america we love an underdog kershaw's almost an underdog now is people they let's go and yeah there's like play really great players who never won but it also sorta has to be their fault that they never one so. I don't like karl. Malone never one john stockton everyone but you never. I didn't feel like that their fault. They just played michael jordan like they just ran up against the jordan. "It's like something crazy and both walked away with eighteen major things. I don't think you can beat that. I think this is second. And as Mary Carillo has often said, for all of our conversation about more Borge macaroni each. It was the James Dean of rivalries, they only played fourteen times seven seven and then board walked away. So I can't put that one up there, even just because it didn't last long enough actually Connors McEnroe. They played way more times than than Borge macaroni did. But because of Agassi. Yeah. I that's definitely in the conversation, but he but, but again, that's different too. Because to me, having seen had a front row seat to all of that. Mitch when the sides were even Pete almost always one. There was one time when Agassi got him in the Australian Open because peach coach who's dying and he broke down on the court. And was exhausted by the time he gets the final Pete was better than Andre. Okay. These guys Bobby Mitch when you watch them tomorrow, even if it turns out to be a beatdown for noodle. The contrast is always made it so spectacular. The left handed the left candid streetfighter and the most elegant player in the history of men's or women's tennis, one guy stand back, one guy coming on. No. It's, it's to me, again, I gotta give Chris Martina their props because they did it so many times for so long. But in men's tennis, nothing has ever been comparable in my life. Watching tennis to Nidal better. All right. Well on that note, we've given you something to watch besides the NBA. Let's get to our parting shots. Bob Ryan lead us. Oh. Tom Brady, should listen to the advice of Kenny Rogers, he should know when it's time to stop holding them and start Fulton them. I mean, have you heard this nonsense about Brady or his people wanting to trademark than nickname? Tom terrific. He's got everyone in New York angry with him as if they don't already have enough reasons. That's because in Gotham, Tom terrific belongs to one person, the great hall of fame pitcher, Tom Seaver. It Brady didn't know this beforehand. He sure does now and he should back off. Oh, and by the way, I have never once heard anyone here in Boston or New England referred to him as Tom terrific. We just say, number twelve or TB, twelve his legitimate brand, the only remote justification for doing this would be of any money heater would go to charity. But I haven't heard anyone say that Tom number twelve TB twelve. Listen to me. Here's what happened in Oakland last night after Kyle Lowry job into the stands trying to save a loose ball in the moments after that he got shot by a fan who was a later checked from or Kolarina arena, Lowry, also says the guy cursed him out, quote, there's no place for that. Cower Lowry would say later. He had no reason to touch me. He had no reason to reach over two seats and then say some vulgar language to me, there's no place for people like that. In our league. Hopefully he never comes back to an NBA game. Now this doesn't mean that Drake, the world's most famous raptures fan is this guy from Oakland, all Drake, does act like the leader of the pep squad, and chirp at opposing players every chance he gets, so that's a different Pugh. But guess what? It's the same church the one where we and I mean we in the media and we the teams and we even the player sometimes have convinced fans that they're part of the action. They're not. And they never will be no matter how many times we celebrate the twelfth man or the. Six-man or anything else. And every time we convince even famous singers that they are part of the action and part of the team, we cannot be surprised that what happened in Oakland still happens part too much. Have you ever noticed how quickly.

"I probably had more fun crossing the line than than anybody. Yep. To be able to control that rate sometime, I couldn't sometimes I just couldn't Gloria grandma or a pond show ever say he might have lost it a little bit at night. Oh, yeah. I you know, that you get mad when they set it like, well, I was right. I was never wrong. You know, I've been criticized for saying that, you know, but, but for me everybody has their own thing to get them to to where they want to go, you know, and like I said when I sat down I'm taking full credit, right and wrong. Yeah. All the good. No the ball. You see is what you get though. Yeah. That's all you have been like that that hasn't changed. No, no. This is who I am. I'm not perfect. Right. Right. And the the end result is like going back. Then you know, there was there was nobody like that. While McEnroe is a bit of a hothead. Yeah. But he came after he came after right? You know there. There's guys that are bad boys. You know, you ever say that to him you ever say, you're copying may. I started this shit. Well, there was there was there was nostalgia and Connors. And then there's wanna be bad, boys. Right. You know, and and in Obita, but if you're going to do it don't apologize for it. You know, go and do it and take the and take full credit, right and wrong and the interests at that created, you know, that's what brought in the hockey fans, you know, in in the basketball fan. That's you know, they they didn't wanna come see guys play in white. You're I told you that they wanted to see guys going at it that you ever throw a punch in a tennis much. No. Did you ever come close me and MAC had some good times? You know, some good you think he's a tough guy. I think he can sure I think he can had if you guys went at it youth would have been a good scrap. I'm glad and never went there. Right. You know? But, but yeah, I think it would have been fun. And I think he I think he thinks the same thing which was which is even better. What was the first moment that when you the first time you played each other. Did it start right? Then I had everything he wanted Almira. She's Irish I was number one in the world. He wanted to be number one in the world. I was number one US he wanted to be number one the US. My my return in my my one game was totally opposite of his. He was a certain volume. So we clashed at everything, you know. And and the first time we play was in the semi finals of Wimbledon. He qualified got to the semi's, and I played I played him in the semi's Bateman four sets. You know, right. Then I knew he was he was my competition. I knew that, you know. And how old were you at this time Seattle was seventy seven. So I had to be twenty six when he was eighteen he was eighteen twenty five twenty six, and he was what was the worst thing he ever called you that really pissed you off? Off on the court. I don't ever say old, man. Even though you're only that's cold out. You're twenty six you're not that old. But no, I Don, it's you we just we just combative. Yeah. We just went at it in. And but that's what made for that rivalry. You know, our rivalry was not soft that that was, you know, the Lakers, and the Celtics, you know, Connors McEnroe, you know, and and now malaise, you know, that they've got great rivalries..

"You every day for every Monday through Friday, three six chip Franklin, Nikki medoro and the assembly of of just people with our back. I don't know how you say. How do you say? But they've got our back anyway, so AUSSIE. So you follow me on Twitter at your Franklin. Got a new video up about how Trump chichi off pretty funny story of all the different people that said they've been with him cheating. Mike trico? Who does I think talk about some Friday because I don't ever want repeat myself, but Tiger Woods one yesterday. And then a big part of any anything like that is to say whether or not that really means something in a mental lot to. I mean, the masters is a very stoic stayed group. Right. You know? This. This is kind of a used to be. Can't get a ticket to the masters, by the way, you can't go. You can't buy scout a ticket to the masters. It's like they're handed down there. Very very hard to get. They were screaming tiger. It was unbelievable. Just for half a second. So who's watching then I'm just rich people are able to watch the games. The crowd is very exclusive. It's it's very hard boring though. I know they're they're the true thing is great golfing. Rich people are boring, but I'm saying Richard Gough fan. So they I mean, they're aware of a lot. They know they know what's going on an entire on the entire field there watching the scoreboard they understand anyway. So when tiger one when it's just a I can only imagine what his heart was doing when he was coming up there. And you know, and he still had to make a couple of shots at the end. They were easy shots, but he had to make them and he did. And you know, I my wife's crying, you know, she's so excited because of the. Be I wouldn't be honest with you. If I didn't tell you part of it because he's African American part of it is is I think about you know, how this game was a white man's game. How it's perceived as a white person's game. It always bothered me. When I tell people I wanna play it because I don't play country clubs. I don't belong to any country clubs. Nobody invites me to country. And that's what you do. Nice listeners have been invited. But it's hard for the hours. I work and everything and and I suck. I mean as much as I play I should be so much better. So when I see people that really love the game. And you know, when I go out and play I make friends, I meet people. It's a I wished I'd known about golf on my kids were little I never would have put him in other sports. I would have been just off and maybe bad, maybe baseball. But that was it was a great game to learn about life and everything and tiger. I dunno. I believe he's redemption redeemed himself. I don't know what what you guys would think. Let me go to Debra. Hi, Debbie chip in Nikki, thanks for hanging on. I thought yesterday when the masters, and I have to say that I was never interested in golf. I'm sixty eight years old. But when tiger wood came on the scene it was impossible. Not to watch him impossible not to hear about winning incredible player. He was he worked his whole life. He never had a life never childhood like you mentioned and he dead drove him towards perfection, and he is one of the greatest golfers in the world. Let's remember the Zeller comments to fuzzy Zeller is a US open winner. Who after there was there's a champions dinner after the the next year after the open and tiger had one and he gets to pick the meal and fuzzy Zeller says, well, just tell them, no more fried chicken or watermelon. He said this cost it costs fuzzy Zeller, a WalMart sponsorship cost them a lot of money and people to this day. Remember, fuzzy Zeller, not only as an open championship. But the guy that put his foot and mouth with Tiger Woods. Yeah. It's a kind of crap. That black people have to deal with their whole life, Arthur, ash and tennis. I mean, let's face it, though, golf and tennis are what are traditionally known as sort of, you know, white man's game. No doubt about it and wealthy white man's games. But I just think tiger if he hadn't been Tiger Woods. Nobody would have cared. If he was a serial philanderer. It would not have cared women came out of the woodwork to nail him to the wall. I'm sixty eight my husband I caught him cheating. I'm I'm not for people cheating on their wives. But come on. Renaming himself husband eventually redeem himself. No, no, Bill Clinton did or any more than Donald Trump is come on. How embarrassing you're out when your wife is pregnant anyway, I just want to say that. I think what tiger wood. I think that here's a man who has basically worked entire life to achieve greatness. And he achieved it he was brought down. I heard people saying I hope he loses. I hope he never plays me. Why why would anybody, you know? I don't even understand why anybody would hate on him. So to speak. I understand white people might do it because they're stupid. But I don't understand somebody hating on him because of what he had no relationship he had with life. And you know, I get you. I love your candor, by the way. I'm I'm so so flattered that you listen to us. I do I loved I loved loved the the part of this. You know, that that made me feel like, you know, I know my wife watched, you know, my kids play sports, our whole lives and know how hard it is to achieve greatness. And you know, and the thing when I look at Tiger Woods. And where he is. I wonder if he's done yet. I mean, and that would be the chat second chapter this life may not be over and. I hope not either. But not all those kids playing against him. All those people comp- competing were children when he started. That's the crazy. My gosh. They were like five old. He was their God. And now they're trying to beat them. And you know, how hard it is to play call every time. I. You know, you look at Michael Jordan. You know, you you look at people who who are just are just better than can ever be expected. I mean, you know, I have to say I'm Scott Steph curry, you know, he may fall from grace at some stage in the game. I pray that he doesn't buy, you know, if he does it doesn't make great line go online and five sixty minutes did a piece on him last night ever. It's really good. You should check it out. Just on Twitter ESPN had the split screen between him hugging. His dad Earl when he went is hugging. His son Charley when he won the fifth one the best one is they they they cut to a video of tiger. When he's three years old. And you know, what he says I'm going to beat Jack Nicklaus. Oh, so he's three years old. And you know, then Jack Nicklaus. They asked him. So the Tigers city. Good should Jack Nicklaus be worried because his majors. Total is eighteen and Tigers fifteen I said, I'm just enjoying fifteen right now. I mean, I don't think he's gonna win another major. I think it's going to be. So that's an easy. That's cautious made for him in. And the way he sprays the ball. But, you know, look, I didn't think I told people I think the guy I I made a bet with a guy on the air. And he sent me a note. I think I was the one that said, I don't think he's gonna win another major. Maybe I said he would he bet the opposite way. But he said a beers in order, so one of us was wrong. It just depends on who pays Linda. Hi, you're on with chip and Nikki. Okay. GO your reaction to Tigers win. We were we happy for him. Or just we like a lot of people little cynical. No, I'm very happy for him. I've always been happy for him when he had success mainly because I'm in the black community. What bothers me is that his lack of obvious embracing embracing his black culture, we as a people need to have people to winners to stand up and say, yes, this is who I am falling from grace who doesn't fall from grace in one way or the edit. It's the line like that makes it so very bad. So many men. As a previous caller said have fallen from grace, that's his personal life and with Bill and Hillary Hillary's, not beating up. I'm certainly not going to beat him up keep that behind closed door, and it's your business go on and be the president. Please go on and play golf, his psychological problems kept ten in a space where he continued to fall from grace. But can I interrupt through brick Linda because I think when you're a public persona and you choose that life. You elevate everything you do, and if you're going to especially if you're going to spouse one thing, and then do another you've invited yourself to that kind of criticism. The truth is in golf lot of those guys back on tour that we've revered they were all out catting around a lot. And and. I know had over a thousand women, right? Well, ten. I watched a woman take underwear off and throw them on stage at smokey Robinson. Well that happens at the end of every show here today, it'd be surprised. Yeah. About twenty five thirty years ago, and what I want to say about Tiger Woods being racially mixed. He celebrates his Asian side. I wished he would do the sale he his he puts a lot of money to African American charities. He does a lot. If you go online and do read a little bit about what he does. I just doesn't talk. He keeps us politics to himself. And I appreciate that. I mean, you know, it bothers me that he you know, that that Donald Trump we'll try to reach out to him and you'll probably take his call. But I mean, that's personal thing. Right. I mean as much as Trump authors me that I can't I gotta let that go. I mean, you know, again, Louis last on this, buddy. Chip nikki. So Tiger Woods. You are either Tiger Woods guy. Or you're not. Where do you camp? Do you falling? The hailu. Hi, good. I'm for Tiger Woods. I followed them all throughout his career. Even when he was a little kid. And the thing is in America fifty percent of the divorces, then marriages end in divorce and a huge percentage of those for infidelity. And I think any criticism of that particular item is just nuts. Well, the way tiger. Did. It was a little, you know, seventeen different women and some of them professionals and all it was a little different. But you know, you're right. It's somebody's private life. He's not the president of the United States. It wasn't in the Oval Office while he's talking to, you know, Strom Thurmond on the phone or something I get that. I I I we'll see where this all goes. But you know, the biggest benefactor this is the the next golf tournament the Tigers plan. Oh, yeah. BMW thing. I think it's going to be watching this huge TV ratings. I mean, golf miss Tiger Woods so much and they really need. I mean Rickie Fowler is kind of has a little bit of it. He didn't wanna major yet. I mean, there's there's a lot of great personality is out there. There's this cat. And it's I can't even think another sport. I mean back in the day, the Connors McEnroe kind of stuff that you know, that really got it going, but Tiger Woods and essentially about his professionalism. It's just I mean, his his ability to something about he commands attention. And you know, I don't know. I have I've never rooted against him. Even when there was a period of time where I was I like other people, you know, he he could have lost a couple of majors. You know, that he could have wanted would have totally changed it. All right mother report coming out on Thursday. John you work the mysterious ninety ten hour, thanks for being here. And it gives you some headlines, but we're going to talk to John matterease here and a couple of minutes. Our consumer reports experts a lot of misinformation about the tax returns coming out here it not as bad as you think. Well, because everyone's soon would normally get half back when I got to let them like last year. Well, you get it back a different way. In the meantime, we get some local headlines here just started up again the deliberate Annetta liberations the arguments in the Newman Raja trial in West Palm Beach regarding the former Palm Beach gardens police officer accused of killing Corey Jones as two and a half or three years ago. Now spend it's more like almost force like three and a half years. So late night roadside stop his car had broken down and lead to a shooting. And it just it either way any way you slice. It. No matter what the result of this is going to be. It's a tragedy for somebody. You know, it's it's a tragedy for Corey Jones's family, regardless know, they've already lost him. So they said it's going to last two to three weeks. It's the irony of it is is the that shooting in that whole scene took place. Just a couple of miles up the street from where the Honda Classic just teed off. Oh, yeah. That's right. You know, the odds are if you're going to the Honda Classic. You're gonna go right by where this took place. There's a little memorial setup on the exit ramp. Is it really I've never seen it. Yeah. There's a little boom. And every on the anniversary of the event Corey Jones's family shows up, and they have a little service there, which is pretty cool. So smashing reliving that while. It is happier. News for that area. Though. The Honda Classic kicks off today. They already did he start swinging seven four I think brisket guts he teed off at like seven forty five early. You know, Bill, I know good God. Watch that in the gallery, you gotta get there. Like five in the morning. You gotta get there really early. I just go to the bear trap and drink. Plan. And by the time, they get to me. I was toasty. Oh, this is a fun game winning who's the who's the leader in a club. But I hope I really hope ratings wise it does. Well, because it's not Tigers out of it this year, ratings wise, it does well, and they bring it a lot of people despite him not being there because he is a huge factor. Hope the restaurants and hotels and everything. Airbnb. They all do great. Well, it's kind of like racing. You know NASCAR. It's got all these new young guns. That's what's happening with golf. And you got a whole new crop of kids coming up in. They're all young. Yeah. They are. I mean, some of these kids are like twenty years old. It's like holy cow. You gotta give some of them time like tiger was finorm, and he was like a child. So that he was a hit right out of the gate, right? It's going to take time to develop rivalries. You know, we'll have a villain golf will have somebody else. I don't know they they need. I'm trying to who is the tennis player. Jimmy, Connors McEnroe. Yeah, they need somebody like that. Sorta you're listening. Golfers teeing off later this club. We need to start a fight. Club is across a tree. You know, do something we need the rivalry to start here will refer back to it for years. But it's true. I mean when you had the lead Trevino, Jack Nicklaus days it. Oh, I mean, those guys were all phenomenal. But they used to do crazy stuff. Even though I mean, it was fun crazy stuff. But it was fun to watch it. This is a different age. We need some violence. I think I'm sorry. I hate to say it will take we need violence. I think a little crazy. We're going to create the bear trap beatdown. I just hope they have a good time. Oh, it's gonna be cool. All right big day. Especially for you. Jan. You're gonna get this done here. But we're hearing about tax returns being lower. Not as bad as you may think. Didn't you tell me that you're getting your taxes done today? And probably not the thing. I want to hear from John. "Hit forty below with the with the wind, and it was unbelievable. I was actually going out to watch two grown men in short pants. Play tennis Jimmy Connors and John McEnroe were in the finals of the tournament was not outdoors. Not quite it was at a place called the Rosemont horizon, which is a big basketball hockey style. Arita in the suburbs of Chicago. Just right. Very close to O'Hare airport. The night before I had put in my electric dipstick to keep my crank case trying to get into a jello, mold. I put a one hundred fifty watt lightbulb atop bike cars air air cleaner. And I had an enclosed garage that helped and I had filled up the car with gas totally fill up the car with gas and had two sets of car keys, which I'll explain here in a second. I had on shirts, and sweatshirts and shirts, and thermal underwear I had so much in the way of clothing that. Frankly, if I had been shot point blank with the twenty two short round, I think I would have sustained severe bruise. I don't think that round could have gotten through to my skin. That's how much clothing I was wearing. So I set forth for this network, by the way to cover counters and McEnroe playing tennis the Rosemont horizon had a pretty fair crowd. And it had the heaters on full. Of course, even so Connors McEnroe still had to wear their warm up jackets during part of the actual tournament. And I got to the parking lot at the Rosemont horizon full tank of gas, two sets a car keys. I I did not turn off the engine left. It running close the door. Locked it full take a guess, I'm fine. What I came out later cars still running. I got out of there. I would say at least half of the. Vehicles could not start. At that. That's one of my stories, I suppose of of meteorological macho I'd love to hear yours and how you cope one eight six six five O, JIMBO our number one, eight six six five zero five four six two six Berlin. "As you as you said, so again, it's it's it's it's what the film wasn't that activists telling you what what what's happening to be alert and to be wet because you catch those things like butterflies, and there there you go to find them. Oh, yeah. I could see it now because I don't do shot. Let's get you have to find it. It's this. It's an room. And one of the things that I've loved about all your works is your is your comfort with discomfort. So and hunger. I one of my favorite shots like this wide shot of Bobby talk into the priest and you think we're going to go across it room. But we're not we like stay in this wide shot. And then shame when the shots. I love are the Brandon insys wrestling, and it feels like this incestuous it feels like this is a transgression that we've seen before. And of course, at twelve years a slave. There's a lynching scene where this man's towing himself keeping towing himself into life. And so I just wanna know like like as a direct like like, how do you know, like when the shot is over like, how do you have, you know? Well, the first thing hunger with the to show where the priests Bubby sentence of priests as the two shots. There's a two shot of Bobby cents character piper. Michael bender and father father father's last name change it because we need crooked us a real father. But it was Liam Cunningham to the reason why we did like that. I am. Sean Bubby back line that goes, okay? I want these stupid others. I wanted. It was almost like a Connors McEnroe. Wimbledon tennis, final two Irish men wanting the same thing wanting differently. You know, Bobby is a civil ear micro and Connah's being the the baseline looking for the long game. But at the same time reasonably short light. That was because I it's like I grew up with great radio. And I was very fortunate. Grab a great rate at BBC radio four, whatever. So to hear was much interesting. But we because they're still far away you pay more attention to what they were saying, so you lend in more. So that was so interesting for me that you as a as a audio audio and what they because what they were saying was life and death. It was that important, you know, again with the troubles. What happens is you violence happens and become sir extreme, and then you stop a new start talking and off you'll be talking gets exhausted. Then they get violence starting stream. And then you go back to talking again. So it's it's physicality and vocabulary within that show within that kind of idea. The next one was of my goodness gracious. Shame and and the fighting with Michael and the is one of these east. He's talented waste on the couch on the couch and uncomfortable. Yeah. That was right. Well, that was good because that was good. Because that because Carey Carey Carey mulligan, forgot her lines in lines. And then that was a good. How How is is you didn't? he didn't direct to roll with the punch it? But then you've got alliance she Michael rehearsing whatever together line. She didn't know what happened things going on when you're young isn't it, but she's not young anymore. She is she's a lovely lady down. But she's feisty. She's feisty. She's a initiate just rushes. Good actress and Michael's he's talking talking talking, and then Salat that was improvised between the two and then Michael cajoling her and then things happen from then carry came alive, you know, and it's those with that was the one of the best things that I have experienced with actress actors because it was just too great actors sitting on the couch. The cameras. Behind them..

"That's one of those questions where given the context that you so you pointed to what they've dealt within their past. I don't see it as. Stretch that she would be incensed thinking that it might be one of those. Okay. So I'm with you there, but my of Jackson to her behavior comes before that, like how she acted before the game was taken away from her because this was all set in motion before that. And then, yes, do I think the empire under those circumstances should should just have said, look, if you say one more if you call me at the foreign more time or you ask that I apologize one more time I'm going to have to take a game away from you. I don't wanna do that, but I'm gonna have to do it. And then if she had done it, then you know, you know, nothing's can do, but at, but he so that's fine. But the fact is that that house she acted before that was is is a real problem because she was already taking away from Asaka who's and Asaka was winning. And this was her way of of taking. She would never have reacted that way. If she. Had been winning to that. I, I think this is a little bit. Why think that that even this conversation, I think it becomes like. I'm with you on an even texture you that I'm with you on just the condemnation of of her behavior before the decision. That's why was saying that. I think people are arguing sort of their crossing their streams here in a weird way where the outrage is about the decision to Docker points and the other people are saying, but like you're not, you're not admitting that her behavior was horrible and every- everybody knows that that behavior was horrible, and she's be throwing a tantrum in lost control. And I think those two things are totally, right. Well, yeah, and I don't even know about horrible, but just definitely that's what that criticisms be little bit. Right? Because I was like, if you're a McEnroe fan, then you have a high tolerance for that stuff. I've never liked when Connors McEnroe did that shit. Like always thought it was so petulant so I don't have a problem, but so the narrative after this is what was frustrating about that guys tweet is the narrative was that Serena was entirely the victim of this. Again, Sokha who is really who my heart went out for in this whole thing. She was just getting relegated to just nothing. She want her. She's twenty years old. She wanna first grand slam championships. This was her first grand slam final. She's idle, the person. She was her Eitel like none of that mattered. Serena was a victim and that was the narrative. So then to see people like this guy who I don't believe watch tennis when. Yeah. People like Ryan lake, who I have ton of respect for sort of agreeing with him in spite of the fact that they didn't watch the match. They don't know anything about tennis or rules at were anything. It just struck me as like, I get why these conservative people are react this way to like this kind of just unthinking like assumptions of racism and sexism. But what I'm saying is is that you can understand those reactions since they were after the game that they were responding to the events unfolded in their completion, like the docking of one point..

Great, you're all in your green. Agreed. It's very, it's weird and awkward and untenable. I think you you, you tennis's built on or at least tennis in the eighties. Nineties was built on. Seventies was built on finding personalities who you liked in addition to nationalities that you like, right? I mean, this is like it wasn't. It wasn't so much like I liked American. So I I like Jimmy Connors Zana like Johnny Mack. You gotta be like I am a Connors, McEnroe guy, and I think the the the problem here is that you're right. Serena Williams has become the sole face of American tennis. There hasn't been an American male who's been any good since Andy Roddick left. And even he was pretty marginal. I mean, really, you're looking at like back to Agassi. So you you, you have say like, well, she's the American and she's the only one. So you have to cheer for her and you have to support our that doesn't quite work with how tennis has been set up in? Yeah, in in modern, modern Rahman was a fandom, and I used to be back before she was the face American tests. There were plenty of people who are critical the way she can get herself, and it is only a sort of late in her career that she became this day ause and I don't know if I don't think she has changed. I think it's the culture around us has changed become more, hey, this is all part and parcel of the like how dare you suggest that Serena Williams is not the best tennis player of all time. Right, right. Which is insane on its face. I mean, she is not the best tennis player of all time. She's she maybe do maybe, right, right. This is the the weirdness of the the fault as having just re listened to this episode actually by accident over the weekend, m where we talked about this. The first time. Oh yeah. This is the fault of Nike ESP. PIN and Twitter, it is not much salt of Serena Williams. She is not Michelle. We style running around. They're saying, I wanna play with the men and see by me. She is totally candid about how she plays in a different sport than men do. And so I, you know, again, for all my complaints about Serena Williams, there are a whole bunch of things that I like an admire about her aside from her skill and one of which is this and the way in which she has all her life refused to get dragooned into racial politics. She just wants no part of it in God. Believe me when I tell you that the tennis establishment which is would they were social Justice warriors before social Justice. Warriors were cool. They have been dying to turn the Williams sisters into racial victims for their entire lives. And the Williams sisters have always said, no, thank you. I don't want any part of that. And I think they're awesome because of that. Okay. Great show, I think, wow, okay. Well, we do is a good good work. Good work. Everybody eaten up time spirit of the week, sunny bond, bringing it back, our friend of the show, Brian. Burch sent over some samples of the copper craft distillery whiskies bourbons we've got a straight bourbon whiskey today, Vic. What did you think? You know, I maybe it's because I have gone for a stretch of time without drinking alcohol, like four days. And so I don't. Actually, that's not true. I drink something night. Okay. But I haven't had bourbon straight in like sixty six hours. And so I was like, oh my gosh, this is thing is delicious, but it really is genuinely. I'm just having it with some ice and I, I'm chugging deliri- is very stressful. And you know, bourbon does not have to come from Kentucky to be called bourbon anymore. As long as you practice the same bourbon standard depending on your state and these are from Michigan. Oh, there you go. It was delicious. So thank you Brian for the different varieties. Okay. All right. Wonderful. That's on time. We're giving to this episode questions, comments, complaints, compliments tweet us at victory in Amana set. So they bunch Javy last..

"To that we'll have to race to that but but next year i would think why not because i think she'd love to have a full season and then you know just having covered her for a long time maybe maybe she goes through twenty nineteen and she does whatever she does maybe she went another one or not just plays well and maybe then she she pulled back a little bit but but i think this is only going to encourage her to keep going well christina wanna go back because i think your your nology earlier about greatness and tiger makes a lot of sense but one of the things that's been difficult for golf is to figure out how to get out of tiger shadow is there something that women's tennis can do proactively to start to build to get out of the shadow for serena for when she steps away well that's a good point and you're right tiger in fact with golf which i've covered a lot also you know that that's actually a problem because when tigers in the mix the ratings are double what they normally are and it doesn't really matter who is playing or doing well couple years ago remember jordan speech when the first two majors twenty fifteen the masters and then the us open which was in prime time from near seattle tacoma washington and it was one of the worst rated us open's ever time gordon speeds so that is a huge problem for golfing addition to the fact that just aren't attracting the women who like you sarah who played sports their entire life who are going to have supposedly income and who would be able to play golf into their thirties forties fifties sixties and they're not playing all and so that's a huge problem demographically for the game of call tennis doesn't actually have that tennis is you know it's been such a kind of cyclical up and down their nation from chrissy and martina and billie jean before that and sampras and and agassi and you know all the great names on the men's side of course to you you think about jimmy connors mcenroe where we are now the women actually you know medicine keys sloan stevens won last year's us open beating madison keys those are two you know young americans who are doing well they seem to have more on the women's size in the men's coming up but in both cases the rest of the world has caught up and passed the us this is one sport where we really see it where the emergence of so many nations eastern european on the women's side with tennis and even the meant has just dominated the game and the women kind of i guess like golf with women with south koreans dominating nail pga tour so this is a good thing i'm a big fan i think many of your listeners probably are big fans of international success and and watching a global game tennis has been that now for a good couple of decades golf certainly is that way in the women's side in them and and i think we americans just have to understand that you know just cheering for the red white and blue that's fantastic i'm all for it but the reality is the world has caught up and we should probably be proud of that as well you know certainly going to have some fun even if it's all foreign final and federal and so we can start to embrace that in other ways as well hey thanks so much for your time christine we'll have to have you back and now you're working on a big story about jim jordan and ohio state so we'll have to have you back to talk about that as that story plays on we appreciate your time my pleasure guy thinks much usa today's christine brennan on the show penzo performance on coming up was matching zach levine's deal a good move for my chicago bulls who i more and more wanna say or not mine plus liangelo ball said he wasn't headed to the j ba now he is we'll tell you why next spain bits on espn radio.
