"His opinion on playoffs and I don't know if you heard Connor McDavid's opinion on playoffs I think they kind of see things differently in or out do you have an opinion on you know what you'd like to see happen with with the league if it resumes yeah you you definitely like to see at least someone play for the you know play for the Stanley Cup to be weird not to have a playoffs in that sense but I agree with both sides of the right you just want to get it done because you don't want to lag too far the next season but then David's point about injuries that it's just been a bloodbath out there yeah I totally understand that right it's hard to just take as much time off when obviously we still don't know but to just jump back into it but I think the powers that be the biggest thing is with that you know what the NHL and the NHLPA it's about dollars right so everything can be managed through managing money and and what's going to be the best for you know they don't want to see a break in the action right is when this all but the same time arguing and we got a managed healthy regular her guys and and that habit by get the next season where we can really haven't heard but hopefully it'll just for sake of people in general that we can figure this out sooner than later are you a referee you ever play rock no I've never been I was always I've always been such a borderline guy I was always worried about get not take so much I think every time I always you know just kind on teams and trying to make sure I was I was trying to stay in the league so for that I never did but I always try to have my opinion now I think I've I've gotten older you have a little more confidence during those you know meetings and to speak up and kind of see what you think is there any content related have you would even watch it on TV Carter what do you like what do you do with your time if you have you kind of jumped on board this tiger came saying I mean what do you what do you do in our time wise when the kids go to bed I did I dislike that tiger king I think to those little bye bye in a group chat that's outrageous I can't believe that's real life but honestly right now we we play a lot of this game called spinach they like it or not it's called Jack box it has a bunch of board games it's on the TV and you play from your phone so we've been skyping with like friends and family and we all get on we play these games it's hilarious there's a **** drawful and quit blocking kinda like trivia and different drawing games but it's all like you so we cannot spend our night seven not if your drink or two and playing a little bit about can you give us an example of a question to see if it fits our intelligence level well so people could be like you're playing how do I explain this would be like a definition maybe or a truth but I couldn't in nineteen ninety in Sweden they a company was fined for producing blank and then you have to make up what you think the answer is everybody in the group makes up an answer and then you vote on which one you think is correct if you get the right das right answers in there it's like it's like boulder dash yeah but just like balderdash but you don't have to make up the full definition your just making up like the word balderdash are pretty sure you write off the full definition but I'm a big fan of all that stuff as well so like for instance I would say it would be I kia and because they've made bad without bed frames yes whatever yeah you want you want to be able well hello and something like that I don't even know it was around back then I whatever is more you can suck the people in doing away yeah Hey well listen good luck to you read anything else I played I gave you you could be my wife PT because I'm gonna tell you how rediculous knowledge about nothing I like what idea never heard I don't even know how your brain works like you know you're like rain man of like useless information I kids only Swedish company I know Rev I I don't wanna grins not a not a company you should be you should be jarred Kerr you know who does London is I do are your long there are thank you Ivan Drago there you go where we were I must break you okay take care man architecture me on Hey you got a nice and prominent Carter Hutton kind enough to join us that's great the British guy to talk to you he's always been great how bad do you want to get up there in that cabin yeah that's that's very relatable to me that that kind of that kind of lay out you know what I think soon as I think about this I think I wonder if he has a sauna I am a big sign a guy in the summertime every single day sweated out don't you think you would imagine that aw I don't think so I think that's something that you have to have to be asking Nike you're not going to give up that information but you know saunas up north summertime it I mean it happens every day on the lake up where I am what so I would you think of his answer about the defender yogi hardship that like I'll be honest with you that that kind of played right into your hand right but I like what he said about restore like what he said about Jake what I was I was I was really happy to hear him talk about job yup you hard you like that there are you know I listen I mean you know Jake McCabe probably doesn't get enough love you know he's usually he's usually set up against the other team's top top players you know listen I mean I read an article this morning on Colin Miller about how he struggled immensely at the first part of the season and how the second part of the season he played really well I hate to say it but I don't see it the same way Colin Miller I thought had a really good start to his time here in buffalo things started to dip a little bit but I don't think it's solely because of Colin Miller I think it's because of the partner that he had who is having some difficulties himself and talking about being holed up with a pulled out of the lineup as a healthy scratch well guess what when you have eighty nine defensemen on the roster someone's got to come out and sometimes you're not going to be pulling out the guy that should be pulled out because he's your young stud moving forward you're gonna let him go through his growing pains and everything else but I thought Colin Miller had a really solid season that's just my my opinion all right its stock ma'am ma'am well I know I just I I I I don't know like I I'll take your word for I I thought Colin Miller had his ups and downs I thought it was really good right before the season one on pause I thought he was playing pretty well maybe I don't know maybe I see things differently maybe maybe I don't I don't know but I thought I thought he was playing pretty well but who knows but I I like the restore is getting some love I like the wrist does getting recognition from his teammates and I think people around too because you know like that that's a big step to take from where he was last year I mean let's be honest yeah well you know what what does that do the PT are you want to keep restored you wanna try moving for a player that's going to help it out on the floor nine R. I'd movement heartbeat and I'll tell you right now I did not see that one year ago one year ago I want to keep Ristolainen as of right now I do realize that you're not gonna win games if you don't have a strong forward line Jack Eichel he needs help up front so whatever they have to do to go out and make this team better it's going to start on the forward line Jason Botterill done a fantastic job of acquiring a number of really strong defense Montour Miller yogi hard you he's done a great job now we've got to move one of those guys to try and get that that top six forward all right hold that thought if you have another thought on it we'll talk about it after the break we have break coming up and then sports update and then we'll talk we'll talk more about that there's a lot of other stuff going on around the league to we'll talk more about what we asked Carter Hutton about what Connor McDavid said it's funny you have McDavid saying one thing Crosby saying the other let me hear your thoughts on it we'll talk about it when we come back instigators from the quarantine WGR five.

"And so Jonathan last season ended with the oilers out of the playoffs yet again and mcdavid really badly injuring his knee. Air Couch. CBS McKay that make David crashes into the blades. Net dripping is to call your it is again comes down. And it's the the left leg that makes the initial contact rate there on the post but I mean that's a lot of speed and weight coming through into that bar in the left lane and documentary. It came out about a week and a half ago that revealed just how bad this injury really was. Yeah so one of the interesting things about the mcdavid injury was that it was initially reported. What is being far less significant than than it turned out to be? The media's a whole believed it was a mild knee injury in fact it was six slinked injuries extremely serious. The doctor told me that it was actually a full peal. Tear tears both sides. The moment excuse toward the right off the bone mcdavid was recommended to have surgery which would have taken him out of the game for an entire year. It's it would have been a crippling. Crippling blow to the franchise it would've been devastating to to connor mcdavid and the fact that he's able to come back now and be eh the best player in the league again after an intense summer rehabilitation is. It's mind boggling. It's it's it's an almost inhuman achievement and in that documentary. They revealed how he was basically forced to make this incredibly difficult decision. And a matter of hours have to make this crazy decision that either gonna make or break. Twenty years of my life plays out the rest of my life plays out. I gotTa make this decision at Twenty to vacate. Get Him twenty four hours because they had scheduled the surgery with the second guy for four days later to make that decision so quickly at that age with so much riding on it. I don't think anybody fails to appreciate how huge of a moment that was for him personally and it seems like a really bold choice I mean. He avoided surgery and basically rehabilitated. This dramatic injury through physical therapy. And he it was you know bouncing on trampolines and doing gymnastics work and working with a figure. Skating coach at one point seems like a kind of risky and maybe somewhat alternative approach the medical staff within the documentaries. Speak to some of the dilemmas. They faced along the way. And you can understand it because it's it is it's like walking a tightrope as I'm Dr Mark Lindsay. Who's WHO's part of the team described it at one point because you wanNA stress it enough that the the muscles he'll but you don't wanNA stress it too much further damage edge and they did it successfully and I think it's just a testament to his character and his work ethic and and the amount of hours and effort that went into this? Did this film film changed the way that people see Connor mcdavid I think so. I think he's more accessible now than he was before. You can't blame. I'm a person like mcdavid. Who's been in the spotlight since he was you know since before? He was a teenager for clinging to every bit of privacy that he has this pulled back the curtain. A little bit did it showed us his support network. His family His his girlfriend. It told us it and it. Shana light into his emotion. which is something that we we rarely see You'll see react. Sometimes in game very rarely as he animated post game there have been rare exceptions to that. But this this was one of those instances this is one of those very few instances where fans able to see beneath the surface. And I think it's maybe it's it's greatest value of the documentary. was that it it. It showed us that so so incredibly. He did not miss a single game at the start of this year. Just six months after this really devastating injury and seems to be playing with the same speed and aggressiveness especially especially going to the net. That he always has destroyed the business. And I'll tell you what he's been fighting fitness but is there concern about out his long term health with that knee. I think there's always a level of concern when you have a talent. This brilliant that. It's going to be snuffed out early and any hockey fans will recognize the name Bobby. Orr who prior to Connor mcdavid was regarded as the best gator in hockey history and is still regarded in some quarters. That's the best skater. In hockey history and his career tragically ended early because of recurring knee problems. So it's something you can't rule out but at the same time if anything mcdavid there's been better this year. David David drives this way. Here is stairs go. Wow Wow wow connor mcdavid again with brilliant we are. There's no sign of any lingering ill effects. He was a little bit rusty in his first couple couple of games and and after that he's just taking off to a degree that we haven't seen before this is the best season he's played in the NHL in my opinion and as much his injury can be put to rest that put to rest and looking forward to the end of this season. What do you expect from this oilers team? Will they make the playoffs. And how far will they go I expect they'll make the playoffs and after that it's very difficult to say. They play in the Pacific Division. which is the weakest of the h four divisions and at the moment what has happened? Is this logjam where there are five teams. That are right on the playoff bubble. And you know you win two games and all of a sudden you're competing for the division title. It's an an unprecedented situation in my experience covering the game. So the oilers could. I expect them to make the playoffs. And it wouldn't be a big surprise if landing in the postseason with Connor mcdavid and and to a lesser extent. Leon Dry Seidel. They were able to make. Some noise is especially against some very comparable Pacific division teams. And you said earlier that the root of the problem has been historically bad management. Do you think the new management in particular new head coach Dave tippet and new general manager. Ken Holland have what it takes to build a winning team around Connor mcdavid. I think Dave Tippett is the best coach that I've seen in my time covering the team. He's extremely even Keel. He's extremely professional extremely diligent. He's the kind of guy who who makes adjustments and gets the most out of what he has the oilers head coaches in the past. Who have done some good things but lost players tip? It's a guy who tries to maximize every the resource at his disposal. I don't know if Ken Holland is the perfect fit to build a contender around. ECOMOMIC DAVID BUT I know he won't make the same mistakes that have they're made in the past. He's the kind of guy who believes strongly in having a process of building a pipeline that that generates a continual flow of of young talent alant and I think the oilers could use that the question now is whether he can do it fast enough and fortunately for Edmonton. The answer appears to be based on the step forward. The team has taken this season. Jonathan thanks so much for joining us and enjoy the rest of the season. Thank you very much. For having you can read more of Jonathan Willis's coverage of Connor mcdavid and the Edmonton oilers at the athletic dot. com here are some other stories. We're following at the lead. "The only team you could really compare to them is the nineteen seventies dynasties of the Montreal Canadians which you know. We're we're a whole other level entirely as well and it was. It was a different world. We haven't seen it like the nineteen eighty s oilers since edmondson's unique city because unlike a lot of other markets. It's a one team city and the oilers are are everything sometimes it's to their detriment because Edmonton is kind of perceived as a fishbowl. oilers are recognized on the streets. Everybody knows them. It's it's it's the talk of the town they are maybe the number one one civic activity in Edmonton and I and I have to say from my perspective it feels like the oilers put Edmonton as a city the on the map to a lot of people outside of Canada and it's so far north in it so far out of the mainstream. It's you know if you're not in the oil industry street which is the other way you might might come across it. Alberta of course being famous for its oil and for its beef but Even if you're not a hockey fan I think most people have heard the name Wayne. Gretzky having that sort of transcendental star it can't help but raise the profile the city and and I think ultimately the expectation is that at some point Connor mcdavid will reach at the same level of consciousness. Obviously we're still very early in his career. And of course Gretzky era ended in nineteen eighty eight in one of the most shocking and monumental moments in sports history. I'm disappointed about having to leave Evanson. Truly Meyer all the fans and oilers fans recovered from that yet. I think there's been recovery because I think there's understanding you know in hindsight. It's it's one piece civil larger collapse because the OILERS Cup after Gretzky which I think a lot of people who may be aren't in Edmonton or or more casual fans don't know there was a phenomenal supporting cast. Ask those guys were all removed. Sort of in the span of five years and It it was such a total collapse that you you almost kind of had to start from scratch as a fan and now fast forward to the modern era this Edmonton oilers team was really bad for a really long time thickly even though it would go over all time ago cargo Edwardson and thanks the owners. I kept getting number one. Pack after number one pick but kept losing and then they got the number one pick the Edmonton oilers would like to select with their first. Pick nick from the Connor mcdavid and yet even with Connor mcdavid. This team has really struggled. Why why is that? Why haven't they been able to win even with this generational talent historically incompetent management that? That's the that's the simple answer right there. This was a team that should be far ahead of where it is now. And the reason it isn't you have to look at the at the time. Peter Sara Lee who was fired midway through the past season and and deservedly so because he he was handed a good young core Connor mcdavid and got one playoff appearance out of it and there was this big moment home at the end of last season. Where in an unexpected moment of candidness connor mcdavid talked about how frustrated in unhappy he he was with the team's lack of success has been roller coaster? It's been emotionally challenging. It's been hard mentally to to kind of keep keep on going. You know You know but we were always kind of. He was so upset. He was so frustrated he was so disappointed with the performance of the team and and where it was ad in the NHL standings where it was at in in the broader NHL picture that he just reacted in the heat of the moment and it. It's it's impossible to to criticize him for that because it would be frustrating. He's holding up his end. He needs the the franchise around him to hold up. It's and I think this year there's been a transition to where we've seen the team around him get better. We've seen more support. We've seen more intelligent decision making from the front office and ultimately that's the only cure to those sorts of frustrations uh-huh and Jonathan. There have been whispers that perhaps Connor mcdavid request to be traded. If the oilers continue to fail is is that a realistic possibility like could Edmonton fans. Who once lost Wayne Gretzky also lose? Connor mcdavid I think it's possible but I also think the danger of it is overstated. I think there's a level of wish fulfilment in other markets where they see mcdavid being Wasted on a team that that has struggled for so long and want to get him out of there. I also think that the mcdavid feelings on the matter were made pretty clear when his entry level deal expired he could the four something at that point. He didn't instead. He signed an eight year commitment with the oilers and That that's not an indication of the player who wants to bail on a problem. NHL wants it superstars to succeed. They need their superstars to succeed for lead to be successful as it wants to be and this guy is the face of the NHL so from the perspective of the League what is at stake with. Connor mcdavid success every league. Take me to market at stars in the NHL has been criticised and rightly. So I think for years for failing to do that. They've they've tried to get better at it to me. You want the best talent to play at the highest stage possible and ultimately that means getting mcdavid on a long playoff run plane in the Stanley Cup finals and I think it would be good for the game. I think it'd be good for the League. I think it'd be good for Edmonton. If that were to occur.

"And in terms of all time greatness. It's really not a stretch to draw a line from Wayne. Gretzky to Mario Orialla Mu to sidney crosby and now to connor mcdavid. I mean this guy is the superstar the NHL. Yeah No. It's it's no no stretch at all. I mean if if he were to retire tomorrow I think he'd be in the hall of fame just based on what he's done through at age twenty three in in the NHL. He's he's not even in the heart of his career career yet and he's he's up there with the all time greats and what's he like as a person what have your interactions with men like. Well he's he's it's he's guarded with with the media. Let's put it that way hockey and we're going to try and go out there and play hockey. Not Cement Voltage. So he's very reserved. He is a guy who who is all about the hockey. He's very serious. He's very dedicated to his craft exciting. Yeah would always does when these two teams face off tight tight eight division. If anything I was reminded of a description I once heard of from German generals in the first world war where they don't have hobbies. This is what they are are. And that's how mcdavid is with the hockey. He this is what he is and has that worked to his detriment. I mean have fans had hard time warming to him because he is so singularly really focused and kind of reserve. You put a player like him on the ice. What he can do on? The ice fans will warmed him no no matter what he's like off of it but I think what it has created as a little bit of distance. You don't get a lot of looks into what he's really thinking you don't get a lot of feel for how he's really perceiving things and and because there's that distance it's allowed sort of rumors to abound in and people to kind of read into body language and see what they wanna see but you have to respect what he does the level of professionalism. I think there's almost universal admiration for it and let's just take a step back for a second. The Edmonton oilers oilers his current team. This is a team that has you know one of the greatest histories or traditions of any team in. NHL.

"Is he is one tough. Sob One hundred percent. There's a lot of measurements of toughness toughness. And I only say that the guy unless you're going to have challenges along the way it's how you come out on the other side that eventually defined you as as an athlete and the person and you mentioned scam 'cause all the guys that have gone through that and come back and play in the NHL at a very tough time to be an elite player earlier. It's not easy to be an elite player. Look at Crosby. What he's going through? These guys are great and I had the opportunity to play with crosby had the opportunity to play with Stamkos an opportunity to be a big part of Connor's develop in his career. But we've learned so much and I've learned so much from being around these as a Beijing athletes and it's helped me provide a service for players that I believe is it's the best information and the best opportunity for those players players to become the best best they can be healthiest. They can be and have a chance to play a for a very long time. Is there any concern at all from a knee health both standpoint that there will be any long-term ramifications from not having the surgery I believed and connor believes that we all believe it. You for looking guys. They keep point two year old athlete like hockey player. This isn't as last injury right and the status of of his knee. We really believed and believe today that he got out of it unscathed. I truly don't believe but if you watch the way skates and way way that he moves and There now you can see in the first month into you guys. Quite closely. He had some hesitations had some hesitations into what areas of the icy went into. How fast food into those areas? How he came out of this turns so watching him? You could see that I don't see that anymore and improve is some of the goals scored recently and and what he's had to do to score those goals and how he's had to turn need to WHO to turn defensemen inside and out like eat healthy one hundred percent healthy and I and I know on would of course and pray that nothing ever happens to that new but it's come out of it One hundred percent all right and I think from is gone through all the areas of his fitness and training. That might have been is that we needed to work on. It gave us an opportunity to work on those areas while he rehabbed his knee. So in Truth Act. We believe he's stater stronger stronger athlete today than he was before the injury. We'll finish up with this question. Gearing we thank you for your time. You mentioned you've known and work with common going back to one thousand fifteen fifteen years old. What have you learned about Connor mcdavid in that tie in the you've been working with them? What should we all know about connor? I would say drive. Drive his determination to be the you know to be the best player in the world. Maybe he he truly never showed it. 'cause he's he was very shy shy and almost almost embarrassed around your peers because he was so good his commitment over the years his is resume. And see that that you've seen in this last year and through his collarbone injury or a at the at the top of the list and you know when I call Connor and say hey man you mind bringing those photos we need to the government in July and ended July. exult the Gulfstream. It's coming up and he's like yeah. I'm like where are you right now is just in my garage working on my shots. Aw It's eighty it's eighty plus outside right. It's in his garage and he's shooting pox. When I said what I should go inside buddy? It's July. I just relaxed. And he's like no. I don't like my shot. I gotta get shot. My shots gotta get better so when you hear that story and everybody Kinda chuckles about it but the truth matter is kindness Connor mcdavid middle of the summer and July. He's in his garage sheeting pucks because he doesn't like an shot when he said that to me I'm like about a year. You're on a different level. Like I thought I was crazy. You're you're you're crazy you're crazy in another way but but but that's why people want to be around them. That's why that's why young athletes young hockey players learned so much from being around him. That's what the summer program gets players around the league that come back to us. They watched the best player in the world. Prepare to play and when they solidly did this summer. Yeah it's a whole new love. Let me out because we talked so much about what Kinda mcdavid does rate and all the things that you like about condom and gave all the things that are inspiring Connor mcdavid Gary. We know that nutrition is a a huge part of your program. Is there one thing that connor mcdavid eats. Gary Roberts wish he didn't eat I would say I he probably he probably does I talked to those guys their day and I think he was hiding snacks behind his back and I was trying to figure out what he had they had they had me on facetime the other day calling me from a little three day trip. They talk and I'm like what what he's hiding behind his back so he something if he'd something I'm sure he'd something I wouldn't approve approve of but like all my guys are certain levels right. You you gotta let them relax and enjoy life and enjoy the game because as you can see it could be taken away from yet any moment. So there's so I'm not quite as crazy. People might Miam- provide information and and recognize once in a while the boys up to uh let their hair down to so he's okay. He's a little junk food. But you know I'll be watching how.

"Of Alberta Edmonton versus Calgary Agree Connor mcdavid leaves the game with a severe leg injury. Everybody holds their breath and assumes it will be surgery but his his team chooses rehab instead. This is the focus a something you'll watch after the skills competition on Friday and before the All Star game on Saturday Saturday on sports net it is called whatever it takes this is all about how connor mcdavid got himself back into the NHL after that injury. You'll never I forget Jeff watching that game when the camera zooms in on mcdavid. And he's like I think it's broken. You know you knew that was the last game of the season but still I think is a hockey fan. There's a sick feeling in the pit of your stomach when I still remember how gross it fell when I saw him whisper those words words and in the trailer which is really interesting. mcdavid admits that he waited until he got out of view and he was in the hallway before he broke down. He called himself Salva Mess. They got three opinions on this and it was the second opinion where they told them that. This could be a lot worse than you originally believe it was And then there were other opinions. That said you know you don't necessarily have to do surgery. And in the interview Gary Roberts and when he talks about Connor mcdavid tissue and how it responds well to treatment. I think that's the best way for all of you to understand why they opted for Rehab instead of surgery. But Gary Roberts wanted to make very clear and he says at once in the interview this is not about me Eh. But he said that what he's trying to do and what Connor mcdavid 's legacy of this may be is telling teams that you know if you're sending your athlete away for the summer. They're going home for the summer. You have to trust people around them like himself to have a team that will make sure your players to come back ready to play. That's what Gary Roberts is trying to say here. That Connor mcdavid is surrounded by people. Like Dr Martin Lindsey who is one of the great trusted people by athletes for his work in chiropractor and soft tissue you. Mike Pre bag was not interviewed in the peace. He's another Guy Lawson. Hamer was a longtime gymnastics coach. Who did some gymnastics works with? David get his body back to moving properly. Tracy Wilson. A great Canadian figure skater. The first ever to win an ice dancing Olympic medal title with the late Rod McCall. She was with them on the ice. Like all these people together were a team that helped make sure connor mcdavid was ready to play and the interviews really good you conducted it with me. I hope you feel the same way. But I think that's what Roberts trying to say is that you have to trust to your players to a team of people and he believes very strongly in his group that can say whatever sailing him. We're going to get them ready for the next year. There's a lot of really good information here that Gary Roberts shares Hope you enjoy listening to it as much as Elliot night. Enjoy doing it with Gary Roberts. Here's a former. Nhl Nhl her on the rehabilitation of Connor. mcdavid pleased to be joined now on thirty one thoughts podcast by former NHL. And the the man who makes players healthy and strong We all know the career. We all know the Post career work of Gary. Roberts joins US now Gary. Thanks for doing this. How are you today guys got doing today? We're doing well. Whatever it takes now? We've only seen the trailer but it looks fascinating. You've seen the whole thing. You were part of it. You were part of the rehabilitation that Connor mcdavid went through. What are we about to see in this feature to share journey about? Don't you know I'll listen Were to start like this time. Do you guys say number one Uh for me dealing with it from the beginning and the emotions that were tied to it I would say It was a pretty remarkable story. Obviously what Connor accomplished in a very short period of time when even us we're with them on a daily basis you know we had our doubts and and we had our fears as he did. I would say as far as life after hockey for me. this past summer with also running the business for one hundred athletes and then you throw in Karmic David's rehabilitation. And all of a sudden. You've got no time. Everybody says why didn't play golf last summer. Well I was really busy and and You know my member of COP and experts. I love the golf course. They may be Samis four times this summer. On top of you know connor situation and all guys and you gotta be respectful. You know other players say to me. Well what about me. You know conners getting all the love this year and I I point to all my guys is listen if you're in this situation we're doing the same for you you and that's what we're all about. That's that's why I you know I do what I do. Life after hockey is giving it players The the best care whether you're healthy young guy or is your guy whatever. Whatever it takes Ah I believe we have a team that can can help players Be Healthy perform at a high level and play for a long time and obviously at twenty two years old conor went through the biggest challenge of his early career. And you know I would say to everybody. You don't go through your career without challenges like this and this was extreme But if you look another athlete that I've spent tons of time with over the years. You look at Steve Stamkos but he went through right and he's now but in the league eleven years here's But he's had his challenges along the way and it's come out on the other side and still having great success the energy level so no one goes to the challenges we all get hit with challenges. Was it different times in our career and different situations different scenarios and of course connors was a very sensitive one this past summer so gary can you just take us through so oh. He's says he's scheduled for surgery and all of a sudden who makes the suggestion. That wasn't we try Rehab instead. Well I you know I'm not here to our on this thing to take credit for innings. It's really not about me to connor and his family and If you talk to the therapist you could talk to athletes care. Dr Mike Throwback who spent so much time with connor over the years and making sure he's recovering and healthy and and Dr Martin Lindsay who eventually took over When he came in the picture a lot you know obviously do so much for connor? Honor when you talk to these specialists that their hands are on the top athletes in the world on a regular basis when they tell you and they on me. Wow this guy's tissues amazing. It's like butter. He responds so well to treatment. He's so hydrated is nervous. System is always is ready to go and and that has been the explanation to me over the years. Remember like we've been with conner since he was fifteen years old right Honor was never a big fan of treatment. He didn't like treatment in his career. And you know he's learned to to realize and recognize the importance of it but when these therapist tell you this guy respond. So I'll each and every day to treatment and recovery and able to perform at a high level. Every day conor came to me and said like Intel into into Dr p biggest said like if my tissue got good and I recovered that well then why can't I rehabbed us and you know conard her. You know he just had it. He'd had many. It wasn't just is one opinion. Obviously the gentleman that offered the opinion of them needing surgery or careers in jeopardy That opinion key trained a a few others under him. That said. Possibly you could rehab. This you know Dr Mark Lindsay who you know. This isn't about my career but experience. What I went through a doctor Mark Lenzi reached out to to me until Lord Goldenberg my strength coach at the time? I don't think Gary's Don you know oh I think this new technique active release techniques. I think we can relieve the issues in his neck and I think you can go back to play. That was Dr Mark Lindsay. I was thirty years old and my career was over right. So we're we're going twenty three years later I've been involved with Dr Markman Z.. and Dr Pre bag and you know mazing amazing experts in this field who have rehabbed helped so many players and Mark Lindsay is still part of this equation because of how good use and Dr prebaked so part of this equation and this is what I built my whole philosophy and my program on. It's is integrating the fueling the training and the recovery to achieve high performance. Whether you are preparing to play for the season or whether you're rehabbing from an injury returning to play the main pillars of my philosophy have to support all of that and I think that's what connor he did. He took all this information is gathered since she was fifteen years old and I did to his rehabilitation of his knee and he's got youth on his right so no one had to cut into his knee and he's twenty two years old he responds amazing to treatment and to therapy and made them miraculously recovered and and come back as you see him perform day to day we are. We are so lucky to have. I've been part of this thing with Connor. It has made my team my team of experts behind the scenes. It's made us better. He did the work right he had had the guidance he had the information. He had the tools but in the end it's Connor mcdavid. Did the work you know. I'm curious along along this path. There has to be A number of hurdles and a number of benchmarks and when Connor mcdavid says. It's my goal. Take the training camp. I'm sure there was some skepticism from some people at what point during the Rehab. Gary did you and your team say i. I think he's GonNa make it when he told me he was going to Edmonton and possibly parent training camp. I was constituition right. Like I wanna say that's great connor. But it's not like what I wanted to say to and it's not necessary to do that. We saw how great he was doing and he started to skate. Maybe we had sean layered in. WHO's a skills coach with the talent? He came into ransom sessions for our pro. Players didn't amazing job. Connor was out there. I'd be watching those guys gates warning. You're on the ice watching and looking at him shaking my head. No not ready for that. No you're not ready for that. He just I'll and do it and I'd be I'd be nervous as heck because the last thing right. You got to recognize how much stress addresses wasn't our team knowing that the New Orleans who were were awesome through this Ken Holland flew in and and basically signed off on US doing this. It was all those people that were attached to this and the emotions and the trust and I was obviously feeling like this. This isn't a time to hurt this dissing August when he's on the ice. He's back on the ice skating and he truly you know what could he didn't really say it till the end. But you know we truly thought our eighteen us back in January That was going to be awesome and even the talk to the radiologist documentary Masher. He talked to mark Lenzi. I would say none of us expected. Connor mcdavid to be back in September and deep down. That was his goal. I would not. I'll say you know too many people. I don't think he shared that goal. Obviously that's what he wanted and he didn't want to miss any time three have to deal with all the emotions all all the stress around you know the fear of your career being over and from April to September to do what he did you know. He's an amazing amazing human being both his character Kirk and his skill and his resiliency two final questions. Gary in the first ones tied into that the word toughness in a lot of ways is associated with. Can you win a fight. Can You punch somebody in the face. But I believe I believe true. Toughness is can you you grind when life throws you a challenge whether it's physical emotional mental your family can you grind through that challenge and and I think what we've learned about..

"There was to win it, and we were two three guys around it. Everyone those battles and that's huge yacht. Congratulations on tonight. Both you individually and the team good luck tomorrow. Montreal. Thank you. All right. You gotta go. From locker room. And I think he summed it up the Lightning's team defense was pretty good tonight. They had a couple of stretches where you know, they as the puck and they had a little bit of trouble kind of clearing the zone cleanly. That's going to happen over the course of a game the Ottawa Senators for all their troubles this year. It really hasn't been in the offense of zone. They've struggled in the defensive zone as they have some talented players even after they moved out some of their best offensive players. I mean, certainly can shoot the puck. We saw that tonight Colin whites. Good young players Chabad is leaving their team in scoring. They can put the puck in the net. And I thought the lightning did an excellent job limiting their dangerous chances. All right time. Now for three stars brought to you by spectrum, and I could have picked about maybe five or six stars for the lightning tonight. But I picked the the line that did most of the offense of damage. I thought all three of those guys were fantastic tonight. Yati Gorda two goals and an assist matching career highs in both those categories I two goal game. And three point game this year, and he could add a fourth point. I shouldn't say could add a fourth point he affected another goal on which he did not have a point. That was the surrogates have goal because he stepped in front of the goalie and took away Anderson's is as surrogates have shot was sailing into the top of the net. Gujaratis my second star, three assists. He extends his league leading point total do one hundred and twenty five points. He now has at eleven point lead on Connor mcdavid is mcdavid is in action later tonight at Vancouver kucherov has three games left in the regular season mcdavid including tonight, still it's four, but Kuch really reestablishing. A big lead really gave it admit hot there and been racking up points in it. Cut would have been a double digit point lead for Kutuzov to single digits it again. Seven at one point. And then it was eight going into tonight at eleven with mcdavid an action later this evening, but kucherov had a really strong game. Prevailing that first goal. Beautiful pass to gore for the easy tap. And then points my third star. He scored a goal. He had an assist that was on the tic TAC toe passing play hit the post as well. But he was skating very well that wide I mean beyond the offense they contributed. They were really effective at possessing the pocket spending a lot of time in the offensive zone. So the lightning went five to my final segment up next. We'll bring in Greg Llanelli five to lightning elating.

"For northern California hockey fans at the tank that's the shark tank where the sharks play they had the skills competition tonight. Among the other winners were Calgary's Johnny Godhra who was the best in the puck control contest of the Rangers goalie, Henrik Lundqvist Lundqvist won the best goalie competition Edmonton's Leandra Seidel won the premier passing event in L. Some of these guys moves in the in the shootout, and they're all the young guys to the guys for one or two years. Some of the stuff they can do in those shootouts. They're amazing and obviously the puck candling drill. I thought was pretty cool to the how quick they can give up on their stick. I can't do that. Drew doughty of the LA kings, not a favorite among sharks fans, but he takes all the rich. Bidding and all the the jeers good naturedly. I didn't win that paddle. For me coming from Saint Albert. I'd have family and friends and it was back in the eighties. You know, the score was probably about ten to four to five something like that. Gretzky would have about four or five points. And I'd be able at minus three and I'd have to come out and talk to my family and friends and put a smile on. My face was never easy. But you you never you never had a back and forth with with Wayne was, you know, he wasn't that type of player mostly that wasn't a physical confrontation. That was just a good rivalry. And that was my matchup. And that is something that I took a lot of pride it and actually did a fairly decent job at times. But again when you when you give way opportunities like Connor mcdavid like Patrick Kane. They only need that one chance to get some separation. They find a loose puck. It turned the puck over Wayne Gretzky was the same way as Connor mcdavid. When Connor mcdavid on the ice. He makes players nervous. You don't make the plays that you would normally make because of those guys on the ice Wayne Gretzky he picked off so many plays. He read the game. So well and players would just be trying to get rid of the puck and not having the confidence to make the right place. When Wayne Gretzky was on the ACC that's similar similarity again with the Connor mcdavid. And how do you Gerard.

"About nine what nine ten. Games in remember so it's, the Gators Andrew Craig Rivera joined here in our makeshift studio at Saint John Fisher for. Buffalo Bills camp it's Amherst day and. At ten thirty we're going to be joined by a legend Don Stevens voice of the, marks for. Many many years gotta be going. On your thirty now Nathan page former, teammate of mind former buffalo saber and now back with the Amherst has a veteran for what is second straight, year two, time, Calder Cup. Champion and legend Jody gage will. Join us here so it's Amherst at. Saint, John Fisher we we got, Paul Hamilton in, like I said, in our studio we're talking about life in the minors, at some point At some point as I mentioned. But we got started talking about Ryan. Ellis's, contract tell you team that's, going to be, looking for a, defenseman that's Edmonton with reg Secca or sokaiya another NGO Believable Kelly's, tenure that's a bad one Yeah it takes, a long. Time like I mean there's no I. Mean forget about the time line are you ever the same, when you come back Again that all depends. On how how severe. The terror is is it a. Partial tears at fully torn who knows how. Long it's gonna take for the, rehabilitation of that he just came. Off he only played thirty six games last year came off in an ACL tear so he's at a really rough go with. His, time in Edmonton now to start a season where Edmund has Edmonton had a busy. Year last year they're looking to to improve and get better now all of a sudden you have, a setback register CARA is a very solid defense he. Would, have helped the Edmonton Oilers. Kind, of get, out of. Their little fund that they have but. This is going to be a loss for them I wonder what they're gonna do I mean I'm curious about how much pressure is on that, organization right now how much pressure is on Connor mcdavid Doesn't you just go out and. Do what he does. And they have to kind of work around him I don't know, like can he. Do anymore can't. Let's ask that question John Connor mcdavid. Do anymore I feel like. It's on the management there to build around him built around. Him he's doing everything he can't hear me. Scoring last year let me ask. You this, I'm not talking about his point totals what he's talking about he. Doesn't make it was named last year Captain he's the captain. They literally have the same team almost is what they, had the year before. A few changes here and there you went from arguably at the start of the year we all looked at. Edmonton and said. This, is a team that? Can win the Stanley Cup that's. How good they are. Connor mcdavid is outstanding well you know what is he going to, have pressure on. His back because. He's supposed to be the leader of. That team and they and. They've been so busy I would say that the the most. Pressure on Edmonton it'd be Leon dry Seidel Why did last year, to deliver up. To seventy points or something to be live up to his second after the. First year second half. I mean he had seventy points I mean he was right there, with Reinhard in the last forty five, games because I I did the last forty five games. Throughout the NHL they were. Right with each other. They're, they both, came on in the last forty five games of the? Year anything new there Hammy on reinhart's front no no same thing there's no timetable on it. Right I mean there's no rush it doesn't have to, be in and if he I don't think it does him any good to hold out I really don't it, with his second contract what's the whole no for poly. Able he has not holding out. Now yet but you know Rasmi crystalline and took, a couple of weeks but. Razzmatazz wanted to be in camp even? Though, he, didn't have. A contract he was asking, Murray? If he, could skate with. The team because he wanted to. Be in camp I just don't think it's a. Very smart move? By, Reinhart after a, half season if he were to hold, out during training, I'd rule that out I don't have a, good half season though when you look at the statistics of Sam Reinhart don't. You think that he's sitting there watching who is the guy from Arizona Christian rock ends up signing Four point four five for six years Sam Reinhart is a much, better player I think than than than Iraq and he's produced. More than him so SAM's probably sitting there saying listen I mean when you start. Looking at what I deserve and what I, want maybe they're just. Not willing to give a long-term deal are. Offering four and a half they know it's going to be north of four and a half? But they're not willing to go to five point eight either You know. So, maybe they offer four and a half. Thinking maybe we'll settle in at, four and, five, point eight five are. You talking long-term deal Assam's numbers when you're talking let's say a six. Year deal is five point eight. Yeah that's what I'm hearing there, at, around there, somewhere in that okay I hear the sabres or around somewhere in, the foreign and but I think both sides no one's high ones low and it's going. To be somewhere in between I think both sides no they're not, getting what those numbers are so on a short term deal A two year deal for Sam Ideal that says if you, wanna be paid the big box you need to show us here and be. Consistent throughout these next two years what are you? Pay him in those two years Do you give them five or I, had a. Four. Four, seven five five. Million perfect oh more than that if you're looking at a longer, term deal a six year deal are? You five and a half million I wouldn't If I'm the sabers I'm trying to get him to in abridged deal. Right now I don't know if they would agree to that. Or not I don't know if can I ask you? A question Slap me of. This is stupid but what's a bridge deal these days I kind of feel like bridge deals they started they started for they started to and now they're anywhere there five years like that middle almost like the and, tapes contract bridge between their monstrous deal Kind of doughty Deal is anywhere from one to. Three year deal it's a. Shorter term deal you're. A little you you obviously are very you, like the player but you would like to see more consistency out. Of his game you're going to invest a lot of money. Into these players you need to make sure that you're not. Making bad decisions and when you have, a bridge deal it just simply flat out means that you need to show us more in order to get, a long. Term. Big contract so so the bridge.

Did not misspelled that so it's not even poops PU So love it Why would he want to resign? There with that why wouldn't they Clean slate maybe his reputation would precede him. And why, who is the. Buyer? They sewed what makes them there's now I can. Tell you this. Jack Eichel there are okay there are multitude of answers but yes he is one why because he's a right handed shot the tour lefty Very very. Very well done Marty that. Is one, of the differences. Amongst? The three that's exactly what I. Was thinking okay Though Geico. Okay is the only one to have changes number Okay well there's. That. Too, I was single digit number. One. Combined numbers okay no you're really reaching now You're right you're. Right, there's no rain go Jack Eichel. Is the only one who, wasn't first overall all there's another one. Wow you guys are the next one I'm going to say Jack does not going to. Be. A, flattering one careful. Is the only one that has not had. A. Playoff, appearance in the NHL I have another one for Jack Eichel is. Only one, the place. On an American team, out of the three but that's still not the reason, why Connor mcdavid why. He's, the only Canadian up to three. That's another reason mardi that, I thought about see I wrote down. Who's the why but there's a number of what we still haven't touched on it yet Who's the odd man house Connor mcdavid is the is the only captain. He. Is the only captain okay Know that you went why you didn't know. That Catherine of the sabers Maybe Around and maybe that's the conversation Wow are you here? To announce something. Here to announce. I gotta, go he's gone out so yeah it's Connor mcdavid is. The only captain of the group now the reason why, we, bring this up captain talk obviously but we're, gonna get into buy sell trade. Which also features a captain question but there are seven teams in the league without a captain right now Can you name them I can name I just gave. You two, five ago, I, mean I, say. Well. Just okay Toronto buffalo are they? All in the Atlantic The New, York Rangers, yes, okay traded, their. New. York Islanders yes they have accounting Oh. Yeah of course Aside. But, not. For long Knox Vancouver Canucks. So. We, up to five wow I'd. Like, to work with you someday. You're pretty no no that's that's all I get there's two. More Five hundred. "The nhl dot com for the blues variant sources are saying that all signs are pointing towards him signing but i want to remind everybody he has other offers on the table and despite signing with the blues on a one year deal how great that would be all about finding the money and it's all about finding the term and if he finds it it could potentially go a different direction than signing with the saint louis blues yeah i reason reports have said that other teams are still in i know the devils yeah i know the oilers i know the coyotes are one of them as well that'd be fun to have patenting back i remember watching him out in chesterfield when the saint louis bandits used to be the saint louis thing i remember the same with staying in i know i did you know as a teenager in high school i wrote this saint louis sting newsletter covered the saint louis really mark scores has been a writer when it comes to hockey nonstop had the n a h l north american hockey league all star game in chesterfield the year part of the years that i was working there and yeah wrote a little pamphlet for the all star game but i remember pat maroon play answer me this question yeah do you have that frame somewhere i don't have it framed but i still have it in the basement good yeah with my stanley cup of aluminum foil but no watching pat moran play yeah you definitely did it think that this kid from oakville who'd go on to play with the bandits go to play for texarkana under john cooper that he would soon be playing on a line with connor mcdavid and kept up with connor mcdavid seven goals see this is the part i don't understand what the maroon because i saw blues twitter which goes insane when it comes to move i mean it was the most bipolar blues twitter in about six hours on day one of free agency saying that doug armstrong should be fired for signing bosak peron to doug armstrong is just brought this team of stanley cup and we'll get deeper into the free agency but i'm just trying to make my point here that blue's twitter has been all over the place and they're saying the maroon is going to be a waste of money saying that he's a patrick bergelin two point oh now i'm quoting people that's not my thoughts on padma room i don't understand that like the dude put up almost thirty goals now yes i hear your argument of well he played on the line with connor mcdavid i could score thirty goals if that's the case like you got to be able to escape with connor mcdavid and pat burrow did so on the first line in anaheim he played in any port almost twenty goals up with the new jersey devils so this is a guy that is very capable of being twenty goal score in a season but look at the end of the day what's the one thing that this team is missing amy okay freeze this is a hypothetical situation and i'm not gonna let you answer this it's the size and the net front presence okay so keep your mouth shut isn't that things nobody's in one player in one spot in one size of the net front presence there you go but look he is he's what this team needs to complete a team that could chase the stanley cup the season now obviously there's areas that still need help the biggest hold up with this is going to be the money it's been noted that there's five million dollars in cap space available four of that may go to joel edmund don't forget chris kerber just was talking with chris rabi about at six thirty this this.

"An playoffs i think that there other guys out there that when you talk about the complete package if we're starting a franchise or have the ability to get any player in the league i think there would probably be a handful of guys because i think you can win i think you can win hockey without just having that so called pure goal scorer but i would i will not look at him any differently whether he wins the stanley cup or not you always go down as one of the greatest goal scorers we've seen and he's an energy guy when he scores you see the reaction when his teammates score he's even more excited to me that's a team guy in that spot in look right now the national hockey league you know this better than anybody we've got the guy the young guys that are trying to take the mantle and take the torch to lead this league the connor mcdavid but right now as much as it pains me to say this sidney crosby to me is the best player in the nhl great i coach i know he did i know he had a fantastic looking right now because i always thought was a head of them and i thought was a better leader at this stage though i have to look at the production the last body of work right and sydney's different type of player different player and what he's able to do and how that team has reinvented itself and how they've managed to do with cap restraints as well so right now i still think it sits league but i i'm with zo whether he wins the cup or not obvious still right up there i love what i'm seeing without a doubt all right quickly last one a member of this show here today their score an eighteen holes of golf will be higher than the amount of points the cavs scored tonight definitely aside you're staring right at we are scrambled though i don't even know what the format is what do you mean decide right now you tell everybody i show up scrambled don't you keep track of your own store now.
